Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Matthew 1–28 (English → Mandarin)
Purpose and Method
This analysis identifies, for the Matthew curriculum, (1) where Mandarin theological vocabulary is genuinely missing and must be coined or paraphrased, (2) where existing Mandarin vocabulary is crowded — already occupied by competing folk-religious, Confucian, Buddhist, or Daoist referents that must be explicitly fenced off, (3) where transliteration is the safer strategy versus paraphrase/calque, and (4) a ranked list of this curriculum’s highest-risk ambiguities requiring the most vigilant Phase 2 review routing.
This document extends, but never contradicts, the Romans baseline translation_memory.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json. It is scoped to the entire book of Matthew, chapters 1–28, anchored theologically on the core passage, Matthew 5:1-12 (the Beatitudes), which sits at the head of the Sermon on the Mount and introduces the vocabulary cluster (福, 天国, 义, 温柔, 怜恤, 清心) that recurs across the whole Gospel.
All findings here are consistent with, and were used to inform, the term-level decisions recorded in 08_core_glossary.md and assets/bible_term_registry.json (Matthew-extended). Where this document identifies a gap, that prior output shows the resulting resolution; this document supplies the reasoning behind each resolution and flags residual risk for Phase 2.
Section 1 — Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
For each of the nine curriculum doctrines: the Mandarin vocabulary currently available (reused baseline + newly proposed Matthew terms), the specific weaknesses/collision risks in that vocabulary, and the recommended handling strategy.
1.1 The Kingdom of Heaven
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 天国 (new, Critical), 神的国 (baseline, Medium), 神的儿子/称为神的儿子 (adoptive sonship), 奥秘 (mystery of the kingdom), 比喻 (parable) | 天 (tiān) is the single most overloaded root in this doctrine’s vocabulary: 天命 (Mandate of Heaven), 天意 (fatalistic Heaven’s will), 天庭 (mythological Heavenly Court/Jade Emperor bureaucracy) all sit one inference away from 天国. Matthew’s ~32 uses of 天国 vs. occasional 神的国 (6:33; 12:28; 19:24; 21:31,43) also risks readers imagining two kingdoms. | Every first occurrence per lesson unit must carry an explicit equivalence gloss (“天国 = 神的国, the personal reign of God, not 天命/天意/天庭”). Never allow 天国 to stand as a bare, unglossed term in a doctrinally load-bearing sentence. |
| 得见神 (see God) | Risk of collapse into Daoist 见道 or Buddhist 悟 (enlightenment-insight) — a state of consciousness attained by practice rather than a future relational gift. | Anchor every use to future, relational, grace-given communion, never to meditative attainment. |
1.2 Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 基督 (baseline, Critical), 大卫的后裔 (lineage, baseline High), 大卫的子孙 (new, titular, High), 犹太人的王 (High), 童女 (Critical), 以马内利 (Critical), 人子 (Critical) | Two distinct David-terms (后裔/子孙) risk being used interchangeably by translators unfamiliar with the distinction; 子孙 also carries strong Chinese ancestor-veneration connotations (奉养祖先, 承继祭祖责任) that could imply Jesus owes ritual duty to David rather than fulfilling a forward-looking covenant promise. | Enforce the lineage/title distinction rigidly in translation memory: 大卫的后裔 only for genealogical descent (1:1-17); 大卫的子孙 only for confessional/titular address (9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30-31; 21:9,15; 22:42). Flag any cross-use for theologian review. |
| 弥赛亚 (transliteration, rejected) vs 基督 (established) | Direct transliteration 弥赛亚 is available in Mandarin but underused; risk is minimal here since 基督 is already the fixed CUV standard. | No change; continue rejecting 弥赛亚 as primary term per baseline. |
1.3 Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 应验 (High), 预言 (baseline, Medium), 先知 (baseline, Low), 博士 (Magi, Medium), 那行毁坏可憎的 (Medium) | The deepest risk is not lexical but structural: Chinese historiography’s dominant intuitive pattern for reading long historical narrative is cyclical dynastic rise-and-fall (治乱循环), which subtly reframes any “fulfillment” narrative as one iteration of a repeating pattern rather than a linear, one-time, unrepeatable divine act. | Every fulfillment-formula occurrence (1:22; 2:15,17,23; 4:14; 8:17; 12:17; 13:35; 21:4; 26:56; 27:9) should carry teaching notes contrasting linear salvation-history against 治乱循环; 应验 itself is lexically adequate but insufficient alone to carry this distinction. |
1.4 The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 权柄 (High), 文士 (Low), 神的大能 (baseline, High), 主 (baseline, Critical) | 权柄 must be fenced from three directions simultaneously: (1) 权力 (secular/coercive political power), (2) the Critical-forbidden supernatural-force terms 气/法力/神通, and (3) 天命-style delegated political mandate. Matthew 28:18 (“all authority… has been given to me”) is the doctrine’s climactic verse and most vulnerable to a reading as a Mandate-of-Heaven-style transfer of political legitimacy rather than inherent divine right. | Reserve 权柄 exclusively for Jesus’ inherent/derived-from-the-Father authority; never let it appear near 气/法力/神通 without an explicit negation note in teaching material. |
1.5 Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 义 (baseline, Critical), 完全 (High), 爱 (High), 假冒为善的人 (Medium), 法利赛人 (Medium), 古人的遗传 (Medium), 污秽 (Medium), 清心 (High), 饥渴慕义 (Medium), 为义受逼迫 (Medium) | This is the single most vocabulary-dense doctrine in the curriculum, and nearly every term independently collides with Confucian self-cultivation: 义 (Five Constant Virtues), 完全 (moral perfection as cultivated end-state), 清心 (清心寡欲, Daoist ascetic technique). The cumulative risk is that “exceeding the Pharisees’ righteousness” reads as “trying harder at Confucian self-cultivation” rather than as Spirit-enabled heart-righteousness that the Pharisees’ own sincere, effortful moral system could not produce. | Treat this doctrine as requiring a standing clarifying note-block (not just individual term notes) whenever three or more of these terms co-occur in a single passage (e.g., Matthew 5:17-48; 23) — the note-block should state once, comprehensively, that this righteousness is received/Spirit-given, never self-cultivated, and is explicitly greater than what sincere Confucian-style moral effort could produce. |
1.6 The Church and Church Discipline
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 教会 (baseline, Medium), 天国的钥匙 (High), 捆绑/释放 (High), 兄弟 (Medium) | 天国的钥匙 risks assimilation to folk-religious underworld-gatekeeper imagery (阎王/地府 court officials controlling afterlife admission); 捆绑/释放 risks assimilation to Daoist/folk talismanic binding-ritual (符咒); 兄弟 risks assimilation to clan sworn-brotherhood (结拜, already baseline-flagged). | All three terms cluster in Matthew 16:18-19 and 18:15-20 — the two载 “Church and Church Discipline” anchor passages — and should be taught together as a single authority-structure unit: Christ-derived, corporate, declarative, Scripture-grounded, explicitly not independent priestly/magical power. |
1.7 The Great Commission
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 福音 (baseline, Medium), 圣灵 (baseline, Critical), 父 (baseline, High), 使…作门徒 (Medium), 万民 (Medium), 施洗/洗礼/受洗 (Medium) | 万民 vs 外邦人 (baseline gentiles) must not be conflated — 万民 is comprehensively inclusive (Jew + Gentile), while 外邦人 specifically excludes Israel; using the narrower term here would understate the Commission’s universal scope. 使…作门徒 inherits 门徒’s own risk (martial-arts/Daoist lineage-school framing, 师门). | Reserve 万民 for Great Commission contexts (24:14; 28:19) and never substitute 外邦人 there. Reinforce that “making disciples” forms Christ-following identity through relationship, not technique-transmission or rank advancement. |
1.8 Judgment and the End of the Age
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 复活 (baseline, Critical), 罪 (baseline, High), 人子 (Critical), 世界的末了 (High), 亵渎 (圣灵) (Critical), 蒙拣选的 (High), 降临 (Critical), 审判 (High), 永刑 (High), 哀哭切齿 (Medium) | This doctrine has the highest concentration of Critical/High terms in the entire glossary (10 of the doctrine’s 10 key terms are Medium or above), and nearly all collide with a coherent alternative eschatological system rather than isolated folk phrases: Buddhist rebirth-cycle (轮回/投胎), kalpa-cycle cosmic ages (劫), purificatory multi-level hell with eventual release (十八层地狱), and repeatable deity-descent (下凡). Because these Chinese concepts form an internally consistent worldview, piecemeal term-by-term correction risks leaving the underlying cyclical framework intact even when individual forbidden words are avoided. | Treat Judgment/End-of-Age teaching material as requiring a dedicated worldview-contrast unit, not just term notes: explicitly teach the linear, singular, final nature of biblical eschatology (one judgment, one final destiny, one final coming) against the cyclical, provisional, repeatable Chinese folk-religious alternative, before introducing the individual terms. |
1.9 Discipleship and the Cost of Following Jesus
| Available Mandarin terms | Weaknesses / collision risk | Recommended strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 信心 (baseline, High), 十字架 (High), 生命 (Medium), 轭 (Medium), 安息 (Medium), 永生 (Critical), 门徒 (Medium), 玛门 (High), 魔鬼/撒但 (High), 试探 (Medium), 怜恤 (High) | 永生 collides with an actively practiced devotional/cultural quest (长生不老, elixirs, qigong, legendary immortality-seeking emperors) rather than a merely conceptual folk category — this raises the practical stakes above a typical Medium-risk lexical gap. 玛门 confronts an actively practiced, economically significant devotional system (财神 veneration, especially at Lunar New Year). | Teach 永生 and 玛门 as direct confrontations with living devotional practice, not abstract doctrinal points — students may have family members who currently practice 财神 veneration or hold 长生不老 aspirations; pastoral sensitivity notes should accompany doctrinal notes. |
Section 2 — Missing Vocabulary: Terms Requiring New Coinage or Paraphrase
Mandarin has no existing single word for the following Matthew concepts. Each required either narrowing an existing word’s normal sense, building a descriptive compound, or a multi-character paraphrase. These are distinct from Section 3’s “crowded neighborhood” problem: here the issue is absence, not competition.
| Concept | Gap description | Resolution adopted | Residual risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| μακάριος reversal-blessing (5:3-11) | No Mandarin word carries both (a) the everyday sense of “fortunate” and (b) an authoritative divine pronouncement independent of circumstance. | Reused CUV fixed formula 有福, built on the general-purpose 福 root — an existing word repurposed, not a true coinage, but functionally the most-gapped term in the whole curriculum because its ordinary sense actively fights the intended sense. | Requires per-occurrence reversal explanation; cannot be fixed by lexical choice alone. |
| πτωχὸς τῷ πνεύματι (5:3) | No existing compound names “recognized total spiritual destitution” as a status rather than a virtue. | 虚心, an existing word whose modern primary sense (“open-minded/teachable”) had to be overridden by context and teaching note. | Genuine risk that modern readers default to the wrong existing sense. |
| υἱοὶ θεοῦ κληθήσονται, plural/adoptive (5:9) | No distinct Mandarin phrase exists that is grammatically parallel to 神的儿子 (reserved for Christ) yet unambiguously marks a different, derivative, plural sonship. | Constructed phrase 称为神的儿子 (“called/named sons of God”) — a paraphrase using the passive-naming verb 称为 to signal a granted designation rather than an inherent identity. | High collision risk with the baseline’s Critical-reserved 神的儿子 if the clarifying note is dropped in any downstream document. |
| εἰρηνοποιός (5:9) | No single Mandarin word for “one who actively makes peace” as a moral-vocational category (distinct from 平安, a received state). | Descriptive paraphrase 使人和睦的人 (“one who causes people to be harmonious”). | Risk of drift toward 面子-preserving conflict-avoidance (see Section 3). |
| υἱὸς Δαυίδ as royal-messianic title (distinct from genealogical descent) | No existing single term distinguishes titular confession from lineage description. | New coined distinction: 大卫的子孙 (titular) vs. baseline 大卫的后裔 (lineage) — two renderings deliberately manufactured from the same underlying concept. | Requires strict translation-memory discipline to prevent the two from being used interchangeably. |
| βδέλυγμα τῆς ἐρημώσεως (24:15) | No existing Mandarin idiom for this specific Danielic apocalyptic sign. | Full descriptive paraphrase 那行毁坏可憎的 (“that which commits abominable destruction”), following CUV. | Comprehension-only risk; requires OT/Daniel background teaching, not a theological collision. |
| κλεῖς τῆς βασιλείας (16:19) | No existing single-word equivalent for delegated, declarative, gospel-proclaiming authority (distinct from ritual gatekeeping). | Compound 天国的钥匙 (“keys of the kingdom of heaven”), built from existing words in a phrase with no prior fixed theological sense in Mandarin. | See Section 3 — underworld-gatekeeper collision. |
| δέω / λύω as rabbinic-idiom-turned-ecclesial-authority (16:19; 18:18) | Existing words 捆绑/释放 carry only their literal physical sense in ordinary Mandarin; the technical rabbinic-declarative sense has no native equivalent. | Reused literal terms 捆绑/释放 with mandatory explanatory framing. | See Section 3 — talismanic-binding collision. |
Summary observation: Matthew’s missing-vocabulary items cluster overwhelmingly in the Kingdom of Heaven and Church doctrines — precisely the doctrines describing new covenant realities (adoptive sonship, active peacemaking, delegated ecclesial authority) for which classical and folk Chinese religious vocabulary, built around a different cosmology, simply has no pre-existing conceptual slot.
Section 3 — Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing
Unlike Section 2, these are cases where Mandarin vocabulary exists in abundance — the risk is not absence but competition from well-established, high-frequency alternative meanings rooted in Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist, or folk-religious systems. Each entry below identifies the fence (explicit distinguishing boundary) that must be maintained in every doctrinally load-bearing occurrence.
| Mandarin root/term | Competing neighborhood | Fence required |
|---|---|---|
| 福 (in 有福/blessed, 福音/gospel) | 福气, 五福临门, 福禄寿三星 — earned or fate-given worldly prosperity, longevity, rank | Every Beatitude occurrence must state the reversal explicitly: God’s declared favor on those folk categories call unfortunate. |
| 天 (in 天国, 天国的钥匙) | 天命 (Mandate of Heaven), 天意 (fatalistic Heaven’s will), 天庭 (mythological Heavenly Court) | 天国 must always be glossed as identical to 神的国, never left to stand alone in a first occurrence per unit. |
| 拜 (worship, προσκυνέω) | 拜祖先 (ancestor veneration), 拜佛/拜神 (idol/temple veneration) — same verb, non-exclusive object | Every Christological occurrence (2:2,11; 14:33; 28:9,17) must be marked as worship due to God alone, reinforcing Deity of Christ. |
| 义 (righteousness) | Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) — social-ethical duty cultivated by moral effort | Baseline note applies in full; intensified in Matthew because 5:20 explicitly demands “exceeding” a real, sincere effort-based righteousness (the Pharisees’). |
| 灵 root (in 魔鬼, though compound not bare) | 祖灵 (ancestral spirit), 鬼 (wandering/folk ghost), 饿鬼 (hungry ghost requiring ritual placation) | 魔鬼/撒但 must be anchored as a specific, personal, already-doomed rebel being — not one spirit among a folk spirit-world requiring appeasement. |
| 怜恤/慈悲 (merciful) | 观音/慈悲 — Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, one of the most venerated folk-Buddhist devotional figures; overlaps with merit-generating compassionate action (功德) | Teach mercy as flowing from the one true God’s revealed character in Christ, received as kingdom-family resemblance, never a merit transaction. |
| 清心 (pure in heart) | 清心寡欲 — Daoist ascetic self-cultivation technique for attaining meditative stillness/detachment | Fence as moral-relational undivided loyalty to God, not a meditative technique for inner tranquility. |
| 完全 (perfect) | Neo-Confucian self-cultivated moral perfection (same root risk as baseline’s Critical 成圣) | Fence as Spirit-enabled reflection of the Father’s character, never a self-achieved end-state. |
| 门徒 / 使…作门徒 (disciples / make disciples) | 师门 — martial-arts/Daoist master-disciple lineage school, technique-transmission, rank advancement | Fence as trust/obedience/identity with Christ personally, not technique acquisition or rank progression. |
| 玛门 (Mammon) | 财神 — the God of Wealth, an actively, widely venerated folk deity with dedicated temples/altars/rituals, especially at Lunar New Year | Teach 6:24 as direct confrontation with a living devotional practice, not an abstract greed-warning. |
| 永生 (eternal life) | 长生不老 — Daoist/folk quest for physical immortality via alchemy, elixirs, qigong, legendary imperial quests | Fence as resurrection life in restored relationship with God, categorically distinct from extending biological life through technique or substance. |
| 天国的钥匙 (keys of the kingdom) | 阎王/地府 — underworld court officials and gatekeepers controlling afterlife admission in folk religion | Fence as declarative, gospel-proclaiming authority derived from Christ, not independent priestly/magical gatekeeping power. |
| 捆绑/释放 (bind/loose) | 符咒 — Daoist/folk talismanic binding-spells exercised by a ritual specialist over spirits, curses, or fates | Fence as the church’s corporate, accountable, Scripture-grounded declaration of what God has already determined — not individual magical technique. |
| 悔改 (repent) | 忏悔 — Buddhist ritual confession rite that reduces an accumulated karmic ledger | Fence as relational God-ward turning received through grace, not a purifying ritual technique. |
| 永刑 (eternal punishment) | 十八层地狱 — the “eighteen levels of hell,” typically a temporary, purificatory ordeal preceding eventual rebirth | Fence as final and unending — any teaching implying eventual release or reincarnation directly contradicts the doctrine. |
| 降临 (Parousia) | 下凡 — a bodhisattva’s or deity’s temporary, repeatable descent to the mortal world (recurring in Chinese popular deity-mythology) | Fence as a singular, final, visible, glorious event ending the present age, never one of a periodic series. |
| 兄弟 (brother, church-discipline sense) | 结拜 — ritualized clan sworn-brotherhood pact (e.g. the Peach Garden oath); lineage/ancestor-rite brotherhood obligations | Fence as a Spirit-given relationship within the confessing church community, not a ritual pact or biological-lineage bond. |
| 应验 (fulfilled) | 治乱循环 — the cyclical order-chaos-order pattern shaping Chinese historiographical intuition | Fence as linear, one-time, unrepeatable divine fulfillment of specific covenant promises. |
| 报应/审判 (judgment) | 报应 — impersonal karmic retribution operating automatically across a person’s fortune or reincarnated lives | Fence 审判 as a personal, forensic, one-time verdict rendered directly by Christ as judge, never an automatic cosmic mechanism. |
Cross-cutting observation: Ten of the eighteen crowded-neighborhood entries above involve competition from a devotional or ritual-practice system still actively practiced by contemporary Chinese speakers (ancestor veneration, Guanyin devotion, 财神 worship, talismanic ritual, karmic-confession rite) rather than merely a historical or literary concept. This elevates the practical urgency of fencing beyond typical academic disambiguation — many learners will have family members or their own past practice directly implicated by the very term being taught.
Section 4 — Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Strategy chosen | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| 耶稣 (Jesus) | Transliteration | Fixed CUV proper name; no viable paraphrase exists or is needed. |
| 基督 (Christ/Messiah) | Transliteration (of “Christos”), not “弥赛亚” | 基督 is the entrenched CUV standard; direct transliteration of “Messiah” (弥赛亚) is available but underused and would fragment consistency with the Romans baseline. |
| 撒但 / 魔鬼 (Satan/Devil) | Hybrid: transliteration (撒但) anchored alongside a native compound (魔鬼) | 撒但 is used specifically in doctrinally weighty contexts to avoid the 鬼 (ghost) root’s folk-religion drift; 魔鬼 remains acceptable in general narrative contexts. |
| 以马内利 (Immanuel) | Transliteration + mandatory gloss (神与我们同在) | The name is meaningless as a bare transliteration without the gloss; both must always co-occur. |
| 玛门 (Mammon) | Transliteration, deliberately not translated as “财富” (wealth) | Preserves the personified, rival-master force of the term and its direct confrontation with 财神 devotion; translating it as generic “wealth” would lose the personification entirely. |
| 阿门 / 哈利路亚 (Amen/Hallelujah) | Transliteration (per baseline instruction set) | Established cross-tradition Chinese Christian convention; not present in the Beatitudes but relevant across Matthew (6:13; 21:9, 15). |
| 童女 (virgin) | Paraphrase/descriptive term, not transliteration | No Greek-derived transliteration tradition exists for this term in Chinese Bible history; the CUV descriptive rendering is definitional, not phonetic. |
| 人子 (Son of Man) | Calque (literal morpheme-for-morpheme translation) | Preserves the Danielic title’s literal force; a transliteration of the Aramaic/Greek underlying idiom would be meaningless to readers and obscure the OT background entirely. |
| 天国 (kingdom of heaven) | Calque | 天 + 国 directly mirrors the Greek’s “heaven(s)” + “kingdom”; no transliteration is possible or desirable for a conceptual phrase. |
| 大卫的子孙 / 大卫的后裔 (Son of David: titular vs. lineage) | Calque, deliberately split into two distinct calques | Neither Greek term is a proper noun requiring transliteration; splitting the calque preserves a distinction the single English gloss “Son of David” collapses. |
| 使人和睦的人 (peacemakers) | Paraphrase | No single Mandarin word names this vocational category; a multi-word descriptive phrase was necessary. |
| 那行毁坏可憎的 (abomination of desolation) | Paraphrase (following CUV) | A culturally and historically specific Danielic image with no Mandarin lexical equivalent; requires full descriptive rendering plus background teaching. |
| 犹太人的王 (King of the Jews) | Calque | Straightforward compositional translation; no transliteration warranted for a title, not a proper name. |
| 房角石 (cornerstone) | Calque | Direct architectural-image translation; matches CUV and requires only background explanation, not phonetic borrowing. |
General principle observed: Matthew’s proper names and single unique referents (Jesus, Christ, Immanuel, Mammon, Satan) favor transliteration or hybrid strategies; Matthew’s titles, descriptive idioms, and technical phrases (Son of Man, kingdom of heaven, Son of David variants, peacemakers, abomination of desolation) favor calque or full paraphrase. No case in this curriculum warrants inventing a wholly new Chinese character or neologism outside existing morphemes — every gap is resolved through transliteration, compounding, or descriptive phrasing using existing vocabulary.
Section 5 — Ranked List: Highest-Risk Ambiguities for This Curriculum
Ranked by combined severity of potential doctrinal distortion, frequency/centrality in Matthew, and strength of competing cultural framework. Entries 1-5 are core-passage-adjacent (Matthew 5:1-12) and therefore carry additional weight as the curriculum’s theological anchor.
- 天国 (kingdom of heaven) — highest frequency (~32 occurrences) of any Matthew-specific term; three distinct competing frameworks (天命, 天意, 天庭) simultaneously available; central to the core passage (5:3, 10) and to nearly every subsequent chapter.
- 有福 (blessed, μακάριος) — the core passage’s structuring word (5:3-11, 9 occurrences in one unit); its ordinary Mandarin sense is not merely different from but inverted relative to its doctrinal sense, since the Beatitudes name as “blessed” precisely what folk fú-language calls unfortunate.
- 拜 (worship, προσκυνέω) — used of Jesus at four major narrative hinge-points (2:2,11; 14:33; 28:9,17) with a verb identical to universally practiced ancestor/idol veneration; failure to flag risks the single most consequential Christological affirmation in the Gospel being read as ordinary religious courtesy.
- 称为神的儿子 vs. 神的儿子 (believers’ derivative sonship vs. Christ’s unique Sonship) — both phrases share the head noun 神的儿子, fixed Critical/reserved-for-Christ in the baseline; Matthew 5:9 is the only Gospel text applying the adjacent phrase to believers, creating a structural risk of theological conflation exactly at the core passage.
- 义 in the “exceeding the Pharisees” context (5:6, 10, 20; 6:33) — carries the baseline’s own Critical risk plus an intensified version specific to Matthew: the doctrine explicitly requires a righteousness that exceeds a real, sincere, Confucian-resonant effort-based system, raising the odds that “exceeding” is read as “trying harder” rather than “Spirit-given and qualitatively different.”
- 永生 (eternal life) — collides with an actively and historically prominent Daoist/folk immortality-quest tradition (长生不老) with continuing cultural resonance (elixirs, qigong, legendary imperial quests), not merely an abstract concept.
- 永刑 / 复活 / 十八层地狱 eschatology cluster — three Critical/High terms interlock with a coherent, internally consistent alternative worldview (cyclical rebirth + provisional purificatory hell); piecemeal correction of individual terms risks leaving the underlying cyclical framework unaddressed.
- 门徒 / 使…作门徒 (disciples / make disciples) — foundational to the Great Commission (28:19) and to discipleship throughout, yet shares its core term with the pervasive martial-arts/Daoist lineage-school framework (师门), risking a technique-transmission misreading of the entire discipleship doctrine.
- 怜恤 (merciful, 5:7) — direct proximity to one of Chinese folk Buddhism’s most beloved devotional figures (观音/慈悲), risking assimilation into merit-generating compassion (功德) at the very point the Beatitudes describe an inherited kingdom-family trait, not an earned merit.
- 玛门 (Mammon, 6:24) — confronts a living, economically visible devotional practice (财神 veneration) rather than an abstract vice, raising the pastoral (not merely lexical) stakes of mistranslation.
- 权柄 (authority) — must be fenced from political-mandate framing (echoing 天命) at its climactic occurrence (28:18, “all authority… has been given to me”), where a Mandate-of-Heaven-style reading would reduce Christ’s inherent divine right to a transferable political legitimacy.
- 天国的钥匙 / 捆绑释放 (keys of the kingdom / bind and loose) — cluster of two High-risk terms at Matthew 16:18-19 and 18:15-20, both vulnerable to reframing as either folk-underworld gatekeeping or talismanic ritual magic, directly undermining the Church and Church Discipline doctrine’s Christ-derived, corporate, declarative authority.
- 清心 (pure in heart, 5:8) — within the core passage itself; risk of reframing an entire Beatitude as a Daoist meditative-purification technique (清心寡欲) rather than moral-relational undivided loyalty to God.
- 悔改 (repent) vs. 忏悔 (Buddhist ritual confession) — foundational to both John the Baptist’s and Jesus’ opening proclamation (3:2; 4:17); risk of reducing the gospel’s call to a karma-reducing ritual rather than relational reorientation.
- 应验 (fulfilled) against 治乱循环 (cyclical historiography) — lower per-occurrence lexical risk than items above, but pervasive (10+ occurrences) and foundational to the Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine’s entire linear-history framing.

Conclusion: All 28 chapters of Matthew have been reviewed. No chapter was found to be free of doctrinally relevant vocabulary; every chapter’s contribution is either addressed in a numbered Section above or explicitly noted here as a reinforcement of an already-analyzed term with no new gap introduced.
Handoff Notes for Step 8 (Core Glossary) and Step 17 (Doctrinal Fidelity Review)
- All Section 1–4 findings are already reflected in the term-level entries of
08_core_glossary.mdandassets/bible_term_registry.json; this document should be cited as the analytical justification when those artifacts are questioned in review. - The Section 5 ranked list should directly inform Phase 2 Step 17 review-routing priority: items 1–7 warrant first-pass theologian review before any batch translation proceeds; items 8–15 may be reviewed in the standard escalation queue per
doctrine_risk_registry.json. - Any newly discovered Matthew term not already present in Sections 1–4 during Phase 2 translation must trigger a return to this document for gap classification (missing vocabulary vs. crowded neighborhood) before being added to translation memory.
