Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Colossians (Full-Book Coverage)
This document is the narrative doctrine matrix corresponding to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Colossians). It presents the same doctrines and the same risk tiers as that registry — this file adds no new doctrine, no new tier assignment, and no contradiction of the registry. Its purpose is to give Phase 2 reviewers and Phase 3 curriculum writers a readable, chapter-ordered walk through the whole book, confirming that every chapter has been reviewed for load-bearing doctrine, even where a chapter’s contribution is confirming rather than novel.
Risk tier definitions follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json (Romans) exactly:
- Critical — mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk; human theologian review required.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision; automated review sufficient.

| 4:18 | Thanksgiving and Prayer (closing); Grace (baseline reused, closing benediction) | Low / Critical (baseline term) |
Coverage note: every verse of Chapter 4 is accounted for above; no verse range is silently omitted. No chapter of Colossians was found to contribute zero load-bearing content; all four chapters carry doctrine requiring tracked translation risk.
Full-Book Doctrine Matrix
The following table consolidates all twenty-six tracked doctrines across the whole book, in the same form and tier as doctrine_risk_registry.json, ordered by risk tier and then by first appearance.
| # | Doctrine | Supporting Passages (Colossians) | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Supremacy of Christ over Creation | 1:15, 1:16, 1:17, 2:10 | Critical | 首生者/创造/万有 form the letter’s Christological spine; must never suggest Christ is a created being or that creation is impersonal cosmic self-generation (造化). | Human theologian |
| 2 | Image of God in Christ | 1:15, 3:10 | Critical | 形像 shares its root with 神像/佛像 (idol/Buddha statues); must be taught as living self-disclosure of God, never a crafted cult object; term must recur identically at 3:10. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Firstborn of All Creation / from the Dead | 1:15, 1:18 | Critical | 首生者/首生的 risks a plain birth-order reading implying Christ is the first created being (Arian collision); rank/preeminence sense required, anchored by 1:17. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily | 1:19, 2:9, 2:10 | Critical | 丰盛/神性 must never read as pantheistic immanence (道, 气, 佛性); deity resides exclusively and personally in Christ alone, bodily. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Reconciliation through the Cross | 1:20, 1:21–22 | Critical | 和好 must remain a decisive, unilateral, God-initiated act, not mutual negotiation; cosmic 和平 (1:20) must stay distinct from personal 平安 (3:15); 血 must not read as mutual blood-oath bonding (歃血为盟). | Human theologian |
| 6 | Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins | 1:13–14, 2:13–14 | Critical | 救赎 must be distinguished from transactional 还愿 (vow-repayment to a deity); the debt-cancellation image (字据) must not collapse into the merit-ledger concept 功过簿. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism | 2:4, 2:8, 2:16–23 | Critical | The letter’s structural anti-syncretism polemic; multiple sub-terms (philosophy, elemental spirits) carry independent Critical-tier risk requiring separate theologian rulings. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Rejection of Human Philosophy and Tradition as Rivals to Christ | 2:8 | Critical | 理学 collides with the historic proper name of the Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucian school; mandatory documented theologian ruling before Phase 2 processing of this verse. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Elemental Spirits / Elementary Principles and Ascetic Regulations | 2:8, 2:20–23 | Critical | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου is genuinely ambiguous (elementary teachings vs. cosmic spirit-powers); mandatory theologian decision, do not default silently. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him) | 2:11–13, 2:20, 3:1–4 | Critical | 一同埋葬/一同复活 extend the baseline’s resurrection safeguard; NEVER 轮回/投胎 — must never sound like entry into a rebirth cycle. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Apostolic Suffering and the Sufficiency of Christ’s Atonement | 1:24 | Critical | Must never imply Christ’s atonement was insufficient; direct collision risk with the Mahayana bodhisattva vicarious-merit-suffering concept. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Christ’s Sustaining of the Universe | 1:17 | High | 而立/维系 must convey personal, continuous divine action, not the impersonal Neo-Confucian 理 or Daoist 道 as sustaining ground. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Christ as Head of the Church | 1:18, 2:19 | High | 头 is a source-of-life/authority metaphor for organic union, not a bureaucratic title; directly at stake in the angel-worship warning (2:18–19). | Human theologian |
| 14 | Mystery of Christ Revealed | 1:26–27, 2:2–3, 4:3 | High | 奥秘 must be distinguished from 秘传 (esoteric lineage-transmission) and 天机 (diviner’s hidden secret); God’s mystery is openly revealed to all believers. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Christ’s Triumph over Rulers and Authorities | 1:16, 2:10, 2:15 | High | The fourfold power-list risks mapping onto the Chinese celestial/underworld bureaucracy (城隍, 土地公, 阎王); must be taught as Christ’s own disarmed creatures. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Prohibition of Angel Worship | 2:18–19 | High | 敬拜天使 uses the same verb (敬拜) used for worshipping God; close, load-bearing analogy to folk veneration of intermediary spirits. | Human theologian |
| 17 | Rejection of Self-Made Religion and Ascetic Self-Effort | 2:23 | High | 私意崇拜 parallels Buddhist/Daoist ascetic self-mortification (苦行) for merit; extends the Critical grace-vs-merit distinction into bodily asceticism. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New | 3:5–11 | High | 脱去/治死 and 旧人/新人 must be a decisive, Spirit-enabled break, not gradual Confucian self-cultivation (修身); 3:10’s “image” must reuse 1:15’s 形像 exactly. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ | 1:9, 1:28, 2:3, 2:23, 3:16, 4:5 | High | 智慧 must be distinguished from Confucian 智 and Buddhist 般若/prajñā; this is the letter’s central polemical term against the false teachers’ claimed wisdom. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Baptism as Union with Christ | 2:11–12 | Medium | 洗礼 must be distinguished from ritual-purification washing (净身); symbolizes union with Christ’s death/resurrection, not mechanical cleansing. | Native speaker review |
| 21 | Love as the Bond of Perfection | 3:14 | Medium | 联络全德的 risks a Confucian ethical-completion reading; requires a clarifying note paralleling the baseline’s 义/成圣 cautions. | Native speaker review |
| 22 | Household Codes | 3:18, 3:19, 3:20, 3:21, 3:22, 3:23–24, 4:1 | Medium | 顺服/听从 must be anchored to “in the Lord,” not collapsed into generic patriarchal hierarchy or 孝顺; Paul’s κύριος wordplay (master/Lord) is necessarily lost in Mandarin and must be compensated with an explicit note. | Native speaker review |
| 23 | Christ in You, the Hope of Glory | 1:5, 1:23, 1:27, 3:1–4 | Medium | 盼望 must be distinguished from generic 希望 and from folk fortune-seeking connotations already flagged for 福 in the baseline. | Native speaker review |
| 24 | Mission and Gracious Speech toward Outsiders | 4:3–6 | Medium | Extends baseline mission caution re: 洋教 stigma; note the 4:6 exception where χάρις is the ordinary ethical sense (和气), not 恩典. | Native speaker review |
| 25 | Gospel Ministry and Fellowship among Co-Laborers | 1:7, 4:7–17 | Low | 执事 can denote a general temple functionary in ordinary usage; ensure the Christian gospel-ministry sense is clear from context. | Automated review |
| 26 | Thanksgiving and Prayer | 1:3, 1:12, 3:15–17, 4:2 | Low | Standard, well-established low-risk terms; flag 3:15’s personal 平安 for the cross-reference consistency check against 1:20’s cosmic 和平. | Automated review |
Risk Summary (Colossians, computed from the per-doctrine tiers above)
| Tier | Count | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 11 | Human theologian (mandatory, every occurrence) |
| High | 8 | Human theologian (mandatory) |
| Medium | 5 | Native speaker review (recommended) |
| Low | 2 | Automated review (sufficient) |
| Total tracked doctrines | 26 | 19 require human theologian review; 5 require native speaker review; 2 are automated-only |
This summary is derived directly from the per-doctrine tier assignments in doctrine_risk_registry.json and this document; it supersedes any arithmetic inconsistency in that file’s own risk_summary block, since the per-doctrine tiers — not the summary counts — are the binding artifact per the PRD’s consistency requirement.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Supremacy of Christ over Creation
Mandarin name: 基督超越万有的至高地位
Key terms: image, firstborn, creation, thrones dominions rulers authorities, before all things
Review routing: Human theologian
The core passage’s terms (形像, 首生者, 创造, 万有) form the letter’s Christological spine. 首生者 must never carry a plain birth-order sense implying Christ was the first created being — a direct Arian collision denying eternal deity; the rank/preeminence sense (LXX Ps 89:27) is required and confirmed by ‘before all things’ and ‘all things created through him.’ 创造/万有 must be distinguished from the Daoist impersonal cosmic-generation concept 造化.
Image of God in Christ
Mandarin name: 基督是神的形像
Key terms: image, invisible God, new self renewed in the image
Review routing: Human theologian
形像 shares its root 像 with 神像/佛像, the standard Chinese terms for a temple idol or Buddha statue bowed to in worship. Every occurrence must carry a clarifying note that Christ as God’s 形像 is the living, personal self-disclosure of God’s own being, never a crafted cult object. The term must recur identically at 3:10 (believer renewed ‘after the image’) to preserve Paul’s deliberate intertextual link between Christology and anthropology.
Firstborn of All Creation / Firstborn from the Dead
Mandarin name: 首生者:超越创造与死亡的至高者
Key terms: firstborn, before all things, firstborn from the dead
Review routing: Human theologian
首生者/首生的 (a Chinese compound built on birth-order vocabulary) risks a plain reading that Christ was God’s first created being, directly contradicting his eternal, uncreated deity and the ‘Supremacy of Christ’ doctrine this curriculum names. Requires a mandatory translator note anchoring the rank/preeminence sense on every Colossians 1 occurrence, cross-referenced with the disambiguating ‘before all things’ of 1:17.
Fullness of Deity in Christ Bodily
Mandarin name: 基督里有神性一切的丰盛,有形有体地居住
Key terms: fullness, deity, dwell bodily
Review routing: Human theologian
丰盛 and 神性 are the single highest-stakes terms in the letter for this doctrine. Must never be taught as a diffuse, pantheistic filling comparable to 道 pervading all things, 气 permeating the cosmos, or Buddhist buddha-nature (佛性) latent in all beings and realizable through practice. Deity resides exclusively and personally in Christ alone, bodily, not distributed among intermediary powers the Colossian false teachers venerated.
Reconciliation through the Cross
Mandarin name: 藉着十字架的和好
Key terms: reconcile, peace, blood of his cross
Review routing: Human theologian
和好 must retain a decisive, unilateral, God-initiated restoration, not a mutual negotiated settlement between equal parties nor a gradual ritual/merit-based achievement. The cosmic ‘peace’ (和平) made through Christ’s blood must be kept distinct from the baseline’s personal, relational 平安 (Rom 5:1 sense, reused at Col 3:15) — the two Mandarin words must not be used interchangeably. 血 offers a partial cultural bridge to 歃血为盟 (blood-oath bonding) but must be corrected toward substitutionary atonement, not mutual covenant-bonding.
Redemption and Forgiveness of Sins
Mandarin name: 救赎与罪的赦免
Key terms: redemption, forgiveness of sins, domain of darkness, record of debt
Review routing: Human theologian
救赎 must be distinguished from the transactional folk-religious logic of 还愿 (repaying a vow/debt to a deity). The debt-cancellation image at 2:14 (字据) offers a contrastive but risky bridge to 功过簿 (the underworld merit/demerit ledger): the debt is entirely and immediately cancelled by Christ’s finished work, never gradually offset by accumulated merit (功德, already forbidden in the baseline grace doctrine).
Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism
Mandarin name: 对假教训与融合主义的警诫
Key terms: philosophy, empty deceit, tradition of men, elemental spirits, captivate, no one disqualify you
Review routing: Human theologian
This is the letter’s structural anti-syncretism polemic. φιλοσοφία’s CUV rendering 理学 collides directly with the historic proper name of the Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucian School of Principle, risking either an implied condemnation of Confucian inquiry as such or a failure to signal Paul warns against any human system displacing Christ. στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου carries a genuine, unresolved Greek ambiguity (elementary teachings vs. cosmic spirit-powers) producing substantially different Mandarin renderings and pastoral applications. Both require mandatory theologian decisions documented before Phase 2 translation proceeds.
Rejection of Human Philosophy and Tradition as Rivals to Christ
Mandarin name: 拒绝以人的哲学与传统取代基督
Key terms: philosophy, tradition of men, according to Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
理学 (CUV’s standard rendering of φιλοσοφία) is the historic proper name of the Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucian metaphysical school; using it without qualification risks either condemning Confucian philosophy by name or obscuring that Paul targets any human system, not one culturally specific school. This single-verse decision has curriculum-wide consequences and requires an explicit, documented theologian ruling before any Phase 2 segment containing this verse is processed.
Elemental Spirits / Elementary Principles and Ascetic Regulations
Mandarin name: 世上的小学与苦修规条
Key terms: elemental spirits, elementary principles, regulations, do not touch
Review routing: Human theologian
στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου is genuinely ambiguous between ‘elementary/rudimentary teachings’ (世上的小学) and ‘personified cosmic spirit-powers’ (世界的权势). These produce substantially different Mandarin renderings and pastoral implications (doctrinal immaturity vs. spirit-power veneration). Mandatory theologian review with both readings documented; do not silently default to either.
Union with Christ (Died and Raised With Him)
Mandarin name: 与基督同死同复活的联合
Key terms: buried with him, raised with him, baptism, hidden with Christ, circumcision of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
一同埋葬/一同复活 extend the baseline’s Critical resurrection safeguard into the believer’s own identification with Christ. NEVER 轮回 (reincarnation cycle) or 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb) — being ‘raised with Christ’ must never sound like entry into an ongoing rebirth cycle, which would be a uniquely damaging misreading given how directly the vocabulary of dying/rising maps onto reincarnation language in Chinese religious discourse.
Apostolic Suffering and the Sufficiency of Christ’s Atonement
Mandarin name: 使徒的患难与基督救赎工作的全备性
Key terms: filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions, suffering for the church, sufficiency of Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
This notoriously delicate phrase must never be taught as implying Christ’s own atoning suffering (already established as finished and sufficient at 1:20) was in any way insufficient. Specific, serious collision risk with the Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva ideal of an enlightened being voluntarily bearing suffering to generate merit transferable to others — readers could otherwise (mis)read Paul’s apostolic suffering as merit-generating vicarious suffering on the church’s behalf, directly undermining the letter’s sufficiency-of-Christ doctrine.
High Risk Doctrines
Christ’s Sustaining of the Universe
Mandarin name: 基督维系并支撑万有
Key terms: hold together, before all things, in him all things consist
Review routing: Human theologian
而立/维系 extends the baseline’s providence doctrine (神的护理) Christologically. Risk of collision with the Neo-Confucian 理 (Zhu Xi’s organizing rational principle sustaining reality) and the Daoist 道 as an impersonal sustaining ground of the cosmos. Christ’s sustaining is personal, continuous divine action, not an impersonal metaphysical principle.
Christ as Head of the Church
Mandarin name: 基督是教会的头
Key terms: head, body, preeminence, hold fast to the Head
Review routing: Human theologian
头 must be taught as a source-of-life/authority metaphor for organic union, not a literal anatomical claim or a bureaucratic chain-of-command title. Directly at stake in the letter’s warning against angel-worship (2:18-19), which explicitly displaces ‘holding fast to the Head’ — the doctrine’s practical corollary is a rejection of any intermediary displacing Christ’s headship.
Mystery of Christ Revealed
Mandarin name: 基督的奥秘已然显明
Key terms: mystery, hidden, now revealed, treasures of wisdom and knowledge
Review routing: Human theologian
奥秘 must be distinguished from 秘传 (the secret lineage-transmission of esoteric technique in Daoist internal alchemy) and 天机 (a diviner’s hidden cosmic secret invoked by fortune-tellers). God’s mystery — Christ himself — is openly disclosed to every believer, not secretly transmitted to a spiritual elite, directly countering the false teachers’ claim of exclusive esoteric access.
Christ’s Triumph over Rulers and Authorities
Mandarin name: 基督在十字架上战胜执政掌权者
Key terms: thrones dominions rulers authorities, disarmed, public spectacle, triumphing over them
Review routing: Human theologian
The recurring fourfold power-list (有位的、主治的、执政的、掌权的) risks readers mapping it onto the elaborate Chinese folk-religious celestial/underworld bureaucracy (玉皇大帝’s court, 城隍, 土地公, 阎王) as a separate, independently appeasable spiritual hierarchy. Must be taught as Christ’s own creatures, publicly disarmed and shamed by the cross, never a bureaucracy requiring separate appeasement. The Roman military-triumph imagery of 2:15 also requires a historical-background note for readers unfamiliar with Greco-Roman custom.
Prohibition of Angel Worship
Mandarin name: 禁止敬拜天使
Key terms: worship of angels, self-abasement, not holding fast to the Head
Review routing: Human theologian
敬拜天使 uses 敬拜, the identical verb used for worshipping God, risking a reading of this as merely a variant, permissible devotional practice rather than a condemned displacement of Christ. This is a close, load-bearing cultural analogy to the Chinese folk-religious veneration of intermediary spirits (土地公, 城隍) approached instead of, or alongside, the supreme deity — one of the most directly transferable warnings in the letter for this cultural context.
Rejection of Self-Made Religion and Ascetic Self-Effort
Mandarin name: 拒绝私意崇拜与苦修自效
Key terms: self-made religion, severity to the body, of no value against the flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
私意崇拜 directly parallels ascetic self-mortification (苦行) in Chinese Buddhist and Daoist monastic tradition undertaken to accumulate merit or spiritual advancement. Paul’s explicit verdict that such practice is ‘of no value’ extends the Critical-tier grace-vs-merit distinction already established in the baseline (NEVER 功德/阴德) into the specific arena of bodily asceticism.
Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New
Mandarin name: 脱去旧人,穿上新人
Key terms: old self, new self, put off, put on, renewed in the image of its creator
Review routing: Human theologian
脱去/治死 and 旧人/新人 must be taught as a decisive, once-for-all, Spirit-enabled break grounded in the believer’s death and resurrection with Christ (3:1-3) — not gradual Confucian self-cultivation toward moral improvement (修身). The ‘renewed in the image’ language at 3:10 must reuse the identical 形像 established at 1:15, preserving the deliberate Christology-to-anthropology link the letter itself makes.
Wisdom and Knowledge Hidden in Christ
Mandarin name: 一切智慧知识的宝藏都藏在基督里
Key terms: wisdom, knowledge, understanding, treasures hidden in Christ
Review routing: Human theologian
智慧 must be distinguished from Confucian 智 (one of the Five Constant Virtues, cultivated ethical prudence) and from Buddhist 般若/prajñā (meditatively attained insight into emptiness). This is the letter’s central polemical term against the false teachers’ claim to superior, exclusive wisdom; biblical wisdom is Christ-centered, revealed knowledge of God’s will, not self-cultivated or mystically attained insight.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Baptism as Union with Christ
Mandarin name: 洗礼象征与基督联合
Key terms: baptism, buried with him in baptism
Review routing: Native speaker review
洗礼 must be distinguished from ritual-purification washing (净身) practiced in Buddhist/Daoist contexts. Baptism symbolizes union with Christ’s death and resurrection, not mechanical ritual cleansing achieving purity through the rite itself.
Love as the Bond of Perfection
Mandarin name: 爱是联络全德的
Key terms: love, bond of perfection, put on above all these
Review routing: Native speaker review
The CUV phrase 联络全德的 (‘that which links together complete virtue’) risks a Confucian ethical-completion reading — virtue accomplished through cultivated relational duty — rather than the Spirit-given, Christ-grounded love the passage actually describes. Requires a clarifying note paralleling the caution already applied to 义 and 成圣 in the baseline.
Household Codes
Mandarin name: 家庭准则:‘在主里’的彼此关系
Key terms: submit, obey, love your wives, do not be harsh, masters and bondservants, inheritance from the Lord
Review routing: Native speaker review
顺服/听从 share roots with the baseline’s 因信而生的顺服 and must always be anchored to the qualifier ‘in the Lord,’ preventing collapse into a generic patriarchal hierarchy or into 孝顺 (Confucian filial duty owed independently of Christ). Paul’s wordplay on κύριος (same word for human master and divine Lord) is necessarily lost when Mandarin correctly distinguishes 主人 from 主 — compensate with an explicit clause/footnote in Phase 2 rather than weakening either term. 奴仆 requires a cultural-background note distinguishing Greco-Roman slavery from both modern chattel slavery and historical Chinese 奴婢 practice.
Christ in You, the Hope of Glory
Mandarin name: 基督在你们里面成了有荣耀的盼望
Key terms: hope, glory, Christ in you, hidden with Christ in God
Review routing: Native speaker review
盼望 must be distinguished from generic 希望 (an uncertain-outcome wish) and from the folk fortune-seeking connotation already flagged for 福音’s root 福 in the baseline — Christ’s indwelling presence is itself the guarantee of future glory, a certainty grounded in a finished promise, not a wish for good fortune.
Mission and Gracious Speech toward Outsiders
Mandarin name: 向外人宣教与温和得体的言语
Key terms: open door for the word, walk in wisdom toward outsiders, speech seasoned with salt
Review routing: Native speaker review
Extends the baseline’s mission doctrine (宣教) and its caution regarding the historic 洋教 (‘foreign religion’) stigma — frame gracious, winsome public conduct rather than confrontational messaging. Note the important exception at 4:6 where χάρις (‘gracious speech,’ 和气) is the ordinary ethical sense, not the Critical-tier soteriological term 恩典 — do not mechanically force the salvation term here.
Low Risk Doctrines
Gospel Ministry and Fellowship among Co-Laborers
Mandarin name: 福音事工与同工的团契
Key terms: minister, fellow servant, fellow worker, fellow prisoner
Review routing: Automated review
执事 can also denote a general temple functionary in ordinary Chinese usage; ensure the specifically Christian gospel-ministry sense is clear from context. 同工 and 一同作仆人的 are standard, low-risk established terms for corporate gospel labor.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
Mandarin name: 感恩与祷告
Key terms: give thanks, continue in prayer, let the peace of Christ rule, pray for us
Review routing: Automated review
感恩 and 祷告 are standard, well-established low-risk terms. Note 3:15’s ‘peace of Christ’ reuses the baseline’s personal 平安 sense (distinct from 1:20’s cosmic 和平) — flag for the native-speaker-level consistency check already documented under Reconciliation through the Cross, though the thanksgiving/prayer vocabulary itself carries minimal doctrinal risk.
