Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Colossians (Koine Greek → Mandarin)
Methodology Note
This analysis extends the Romans baseline Language Package to the Colossians curriculum. Per the hard rule of the TRI pipeline, any term already recorded in the baseline translation_memory.json is reused exactly — its Mandarin rendering, transliteration, and risk tier are not re-derived here; only Colossians-specific contextual nuances are added where the term appears in a new sense (e.g. 平安 vs. a distinct cosmic-reconciliation “peace” in Col 1:20).
Every load-bearing term new to Colossians is analyzed with the full field set: original word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning, destination-language (Mandarin) rendering risk.
The core passage, Colossians 1:15–20 (the “Christ Hymn”), receives full verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter of Colossians is then analyzed section by section for load-bearing theological vocabulary, in canonical order, first to last, with explicit notes where a passage introduces no new vocabulary.
PART A — Core Passage: Colossians 1:15–20
Verse 15 — “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation”
| Field | εἰκών (image) | ἀόρατος (invisible) | πρωτότοκος (firstborn) | κτίσις (creation) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | eikōn | aoratos | prōtotokos | ktisis |
| Literal meaning | visible likeness/representation | not able to be seen | first-born (birth-order compound) | that which is created / creation-act |
| Semantic range | a copy that also manifests/represents the original (coin-image, mirror-image, statue); can mean mere resemblance or an embodying manifestation | unseen, imperceptible to physical sight | (a) literal first child born; (b) rank/preeminence, sovereign heir regardless of birth order (LXX Ps 89:27, of David) | (a) act of creating; (b) the created order/cosmos as a totality |
| English variants | image, likeness, exact representation | invisible, unseen | firstborn, first-born one | creation, created things, everything created |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ is not merely like God but the visible manifestation of the unseen God’s own being — full and true revelation, not a symbolic copy | Establishes the Father’s transcendence, against which the Son’s role as image is the solution | Establishes Christ’s supreme rank and prior existence over all creation, NOT that he was the first created being — sense (b) is required, confirmed by v.16-17 (“in him all things were created… he is before all things”) | The totality of the created cosmos, of which Christ is not a member but the agent (v.16) |
| Mandarin rendering risk | HIGH. Established rendering: 形像 (xíngxiàng). Risk: 像 (xiàng) is the same root found in 神像 (shénxiàng, an idol/temple statue) and 佛像 (fóxiàng, Buddha statue) — the most common word for a physical cult image bowed to in Chinese temples. Every occurrence must be taught alongside a clarifying note that Christ as God’s 形像 is the living, personal self-disclosure of God’s being, not an object of worship crafted by human hands. | Low. 不能看见的 (bù néng kànjiàn de) or CUV’s 不能看见之神; no significant collision. | CRITICAL. Established CUV-pattern rendering: 首生者/首生的 (shǒushēng zhě/de). Must NEVER be taught with the plain birth-order sense (“the first one God created”), which would produce an Arian reading denying Christ’s eternal, uncreated deity — directly contradicting the “Supremacy of Christ over Creation” doctrine this curriculum names. Requires mandatory translator note on every occurrence in Colossians 1. | HIGH. Rendering: 创造/被造的/万有 depending on grammatical role (verb/passive-participle/collective noun). Risk of collision with 造化 (zàohuà, the Daoist concept of the impersonal, self-generating Creative Transformation of nature — cf. Daodejing 42, “the Dao produces the ten thousand things”) and with impersonal cosmogonic language generally. Must be taught as the personal, deliberate act of a personal Creator (Christ), not an impersonal cosmic process. |
Verse 16 — “For by him all things were created… whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities”
| Field | θρόνοι/κυριότητες/ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι (thrones/dominions/rulers/authorities) | τὰ πάντα (all things) |
|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | thronoi / kyriotētes / archai / exousiai | ta panta |
| Literal meaning | seats of rule / lordships / firsts-in-rank / permissions-to-act | ”the all things” — comprehensive totality |
| Semantic range | A fourfold enumeration of ranked spiritual powers, both angelic and demonic, understood in Second Temple Jewish and early Christian cosmology as ranked orders of spirit-beings governing the created order | Cosmic totality (creation sense, as here) OR “every respect/matter” (as in v.18’s “in everything,” πᾶσιν) — Paul’s repeated πάντα throughout this hymn is a deliberate rhetorical drumbeat asserting Christ’s absolute supremacy |
| English variants | thrones, dominions, principalities, powers, rulers, authorities | all things, everything, the universe |
| Contextual theological meaning | Whatever ranked spiritual powers the false teachers at Colossae venerated or feared, Christ created them and stands supreme over them — they are creatures, not rivals | Establishes maximal, unqualified scope: nothing in the created order is excluded from Christ’s creative agency |
| Mandarin rendering risk | HIGH. CUV-pattern rendering: 有位的、主治的、执政的、掌权的. Chinese folk religion possesses an elaborate celestial/underworld bureaucracy of ranked deities and spirits (玉皇大帝’s court, 城隍, 土地公, 阎王) who are venerated, feared, and ritually placated. Readers may map this fourfold list onto that indigenous spiritual bureaucracy as a parallel, independent hierarchy. Teaching must state clearly: these powers, whatever they are, are Christ’s creatures and subject to him — never a bureaucracy requiring separate appeasement. | MEDIUM. Rendering: 万有 (cosmic sense) vs. 凡事 (respect/matter sense, v.18). Requires a translator consistency note: track which of the two senses is active at each of the passage’s seven occurrences of πάντα (vv.16 [x3], 17 [x1], 18 [x1], 20 [x1]) so the rhetorical repetition is not flattened into two unrelated Mandarin words used inconsistently. |
Verse 17 — “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together”
| Field | πρὸ πάντων (before all things) | συνίστημι/συνέστηκεν (hold together) |
|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | pro pantōn | synistēmi / synestēken |
| Literal meaning | prior to / in front of all things | to stand together, cohere, be constituted |
| Semantic range | Temporal priority (existed before) and/or rank priority (supreme over) | Physical cohesion (holding together a structure) or ontological sustaining (continued existence depends on) |
| English variants | before all things, supreme over all | hold together, consist, are sustained |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ’s eternal pre-existence and supremacy over the created order he made | Christ is not only the originating cause of creation (v.16) but its ongoing sustaining cause — creation’s continued coherence depends on him moment by moment |
| Mandarin rendering risk | MEDIUM. 在万有之先 (zài wànyǒu zhī xiān). Low collision risk if 首生者 (v.15) has already been correctly taught as rank/priority rather than birth order — this verse is the key textual anchor disambiguating v.15, so the two must be taught together. | HIGH. CUV-pattern rendering: (万有也靠他)而立 / 维系 (ér lì / wéixì). Risk of collision with the Neo-Confucian concept of 理 (lǐ, the underlying rational principle that structures and sustains all things, central to Zhu Xi’s School of Principle) and the Daoist 道 as the impersonal sustaining ground of the cosmos. This verse extends the baseline’s “providence” doctrine (神的护理, High risk) Christologically: Christ’s sustaining of the universe is the personal, continuous action of the divine Son, not an impersonal metaphysical principle holding reality together. Requires theologian review note. |
Verse 18 — “He is the head of the body, the church… the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent”
| Field | κεφαλή (head) | σῶμα (body) | ἀρχή (beginning/first-principle) | πρωτεύων (preeminent) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | kephalē | sōma | archē | prōteuōn |
| Literal meaning | the physical head of a body | physical body | beginning, origin, first cause | to hold first place |
| Semantic range | literal anatomical head; metaphorical source/authority/life-supply for a body | literal physical body; metaphorical corporate unity (here: the church) | temporal beginning; ontological first-principle/source; ruling office | rank preeminence |
| English variants | head | body | beginning, origin, ruler | preeminent, first place, supremacy |
| Contextual theological meaning | Christ is the source of life, authority, and unity for the church, which depends on him as a body depends on its head | The church is here explicitly identified as the “body” of which Christ is head — corporate, organic union, not an institution or building | Reinforces Christ’s role as originating source, paralleling v.15’s rank-priority sense of “firstborn” | The purpose clause states God’s intent: Christ’s supremacy is to be total and comprehensive, “in everything” |
| Mandarin rendering risk | MEDIUM. Rendering: 头 (tóu). Requires clarification that this is a source-of-life/authority metaphor for organic union, not a literal anatomical claim nor a bureaucratic chain-of-command title. | MEDIUM. Rendering: 身体 (shēntǐ), reused consistently for “church as body” doctrine (see baseline church_as_gods_people, Medium risk). Must be distinguished from σῶμα’s other sense in Col 2:17 (“substance,” see Chapter 2 below), where CUV uses a different Mandarin word (形体/实体) — translators must not conflate the two senses under one Mandarin term. | MEDIUM. Rendering: 元始 (yuánshǐ) per CUV pattern. Minor risk of overlap with Daoist cosmogonic “origin” language (太初, 元始天尊 — “Primordial Heavenly Venerable One,” a high deity in the Daoist pantheon); requires the term be anchored explicitly to Christ’s resurrection (“firstborn from the dead”), not treated as free-standing cosmological title. | LOW-MEDIUM. Rendering: 居首位 (jū shǒuwèi, “occupy first place”). Low collision risk; straightforward. |
(πρωτότοκος recurs here as “firstborn from the dead” — see v.15 entry; note the deliberate structural parallel: firstborn of all creation (v.15, supremacy over creation) / firstborn from the dead (v.18, supremacy through resurrection). Both occurrences must use the identical Mandarin term 首生者/首生的 to preserve Paul’s intentional inclusio.)
Verse 19 — “For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell”
| Field | πλήρωμα (fullness) | εὐδόκησεν (was pleased) | κατοικέω (dwell) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | plērōma | eudokēsen | katoikeō |
| Literal meaning | that which fills, completeness, totality | took pleasure in, was well-pleased | to dwell, take up permanent residence |
| Semantic range | (a) ordinary sense, “full measure/totality”; (b) in Colossae’s local false-teaching context, likely a technical term for the sum of divine powers/emanations bridging a transcendent God and the material world (an early form of the concept later systematized in second-century Gnosticism) | God’s/the Father’s sovereign, gracious pleasure/will | temporary lodging vs. permanent, settled residence — κατοικέω implies the latter |
| English variants | fullness, totality of deity | was pleased, was willing | dwell, live, reside, take up residence |
| Contextual theological meaning | Paul co-opts and corrects the false teachers’ own vocabulary: the entire “fullness” they sought access to through intermediary powers is not distributed among many beings but dwells completely, permanently, and exclusively in Christ alone | The Father’s sovereign, gracious decision, echoing grace-language already established in the baseline | Not a temporary visitation but Christ’s permanent possession of the divine fullness |
| Mandarin rendering risk | CRITICAL. CUV-pattern rendering: 丰盛 (fēngshèng). This is the single highest-stakes term for the “Fullness of Deity in Christ” doctrine named in this curriculum. Must never be taught as a diffuse, pantheistic “filling” comparable to 道 pervading all things in Daoist metaphysics, 气 (vital energy) permeating the cosmos, or Buddhist buddha-nature (佛性) latent in all beings. The entire fullness of deity resides personally and exclusively in the one person of Christ — not distributed, not immanent-in-everything, not attainable by other beings through cultivation. | LOW. 喜欢/乐意 (xǐhuan/lèyì). Reuses the established grace-adjacent vocabulary field. | MEDIUM. 居住 (jūzhù). Note the shift to the stronger, bodily-emphatic phrase 有形有体地居住 at the parallel passage Col 2:9 — flag for consistency across the two verses in Phase 2. |
Verse 20 — “and through him to reconcile all things to himself, making peace by the blood of his cross”
| Field | ἀποκαταλλάσσω (reconcile) | εἰρηνοποιέω/εἰρήνη (make peace) | αἷμα (blood) | σταυρός (cross) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transliteration | apokatallassō | eirēnopoieō / eirēnē | haima | stauros |
| Literal meaning | to exchange from hostility back into a right relationship, completely | to make/produce peace | blood | an upright wooden stake/execution frame |
| Semantic range | intensified compound of καταλλάσσω (“reconcile”); restoring a relationship of enmity to one of favor, comprehensively | (a) absence of hostility, cessation of conflict between estranged parties (cosmic/relational sense, as here); (b) personal inward tranquility/well-being (a distinct sense) | literal shed blood; sacrificial/atoning blood (OT sacrificial background) | literal execution instrument; metonym for Christ’s atoning death |
| English variants | reconcile, restore to favor | made peace, achieved peace, reconciled | blood | cross |
| Contextual theological meaning | God’s cosmic reconciling work in Christ extends to “all things” (τὰ πάντα again — echoing vv.16-17), addressing not only human sin but the entire disordered creation, accomplished through a specific historical, bloody death | The peace here is a peace achieved between previously hostile parties through a costly transaction (the cross), not a subjective feeling | Grounds the reconciliation in a real, historical, sacrificial death — the specific means by which peace was achieved | The specific, historical instrument of Christ’s death; the concrete basis of the cosmic reconciliation just described |
| Mandarin rendering risk | CRITICAL. CUV-pattern rendering: 和好 (héhǎo). Doctrine: Reconciliation through the Cross. Must retain the sense of a decisive, once-for-all restoration accomplished by God’s initiative — not a mutual negotiated settlement between equal parties, and not a state achieved gradually through human ritual or merit-accumulation. | HIGH — flag as a distinct sense from the baseline’s established peace term. The baseline translation_memory.json records 平安 (píng’ān) for “peace with God” (Romans 5:1, a settled, personal, relational peace received by the individual believer). Colossians 1:20 describes a different, cosmic-reconciliation sense — “making peace” as an achieved historical transaction restoring a hostile universe. CUV convention here commonly renders this sense as 和平 (hépíng, “peace” between formerly warring parties) rather than 平安. This package must explicitly instruct translators: 平安 = the settled personal peace a believer receives (Rom 5:1 sense, reused from baseline); 和平 = the cosmic peace Christ achieved/made through the cross (Col 1:20 sense). Do not use these two Mandarin words interchangeably. Both must avoid the folk-amulet “safety/good fortune” reading already flagged for 平安 in the baseline. | MEDIUM. Rendering: 血 (xuè). Note a potential positive bridge and a risk in the same breath: the Chinese cultural practice of 歃血为盟 (shàxiě wéi méng, “smearing blood to seal a covenant/oath,” e.g. the Peach Garden Oath) offers a partially useful cultural analogy for blood-sealed covenant, but must be corrected — Christ’s blood is a substitutionary, sacrificial, atoning death for sin, not a mutual bonding oath between equal parties. | LOW. Established Christian-specific term 十字架 (shízìjià); no competing Chinese religious referent claims this term, making it a doctrinally “safe” and distinctively Christian marker. |
(τὰ πάντα recurs a final time here — see v.16 consistency note. εἴτε τὰ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἴτε τὰ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς, “whether things on earth or things in heaven,” closes the hymn’s inclusio with v.16’s “in heaven and on earth,” reinforcing the totalizing scope — Mandarin must preserve this envelope structure, e.g. 无论是地上的、天上的, matching the wording used in v.16’s “在天上的、地上的.”)
PART B — Whole-Book, Chapter-by-Chapter Study
Chapter 1 (outside the core passage: 1:1–14, 1:21–29)
1:1–8 — Salutation and Thanksgiving
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| apostle | ἀπόστολος | apostolos | one sent | delegated, authorized messenger | apostle | Reused exactly from baseline: 使徒 (Low risk). | Low — reuse baseline |
| grace / peace (greeting) | χάρις / εἰρήνη | charis / eirēnē | favor / peace | epistolary greeting formula | grace and peace | Decision flag: many CUV editions render this specific greeting-formula χάρις as 恩惠 (ēnhuì) rather than 恩典. Per this package’s consistency mandate (baseline TM already fixes “grace” = 恩典 for all doctrinal contexts), use 恩典 uniformly, including in the epistolary greeting, to avoid learners encountering two different Mandarin words for the same Greek term across Romans and Colossians materials. εἰρήνη here is the ordinary greeting sense and should use 平安 (baseline “peace,” not the cosmic 和平 sense flagged at 1:20). | Medium — cross-document consistency decision, flag for review |
| faith / love | πίστις / ἀγάπη | pistis / agapē | trust / self-giving love | — | faith, love | 信心 reused from baseline. ἀγάπη is new to this package — see 3:14 entry below for full treatment. | See 3:14 |
| gospel | εὐαγγέλιον | euangelion | good news | — | gospel | Reused exactly: 福音 (Medium risk per baseline). | Reuse baseline |
| bearing fruit / growing | καρποφορούμενον | karpophoroumenon | fruit-bearing | agricultural metaphor for the gospel’s advance | bearing fruit, increasing | Rendering: 结果子 (jié guǒzi). Natural, low-risk agricultural metaphor in Chinese as well. | Low |
1:9–14 — Prayer for Wisdom, Rescue, and Redemption
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| wisdom | σοφία | sophia | practical/comprehensive skill in living | Everyday practical skill; philosophical wisdom; in Jewish wisdom literature, God-given insight into his will; in Colossae’s false teaching, a rival claim to superior spiritual wisdom | wisdom | Christ-centered, Spirit-given insight into God’s will — the letter’s central polemical concern, since the false teachers offered a rival, exclusive “wisdom.” | HIGH. Rendering: 智慧 (zhìhuì). 智 is one of the Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) — a cultivated ethical prudence — and 般若 (bōrě, prajñā) is the Mahayana Buddhist wisdom that perceives the emptiness of reality, attained through meditative cultivation. Biblical wisdom in Colossians is neither self-cultivated ethical acumen nor mystically attained insight into emptiness, but knowledge of God’s revealed will centered in Christ (2:3, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”). Central to the “Warning against False Teaching” doctrine — theologian review required at every occurrence. |
| understanding / knowledge | σύνεσις / ἐπίγνωσις | synesis / epignōsis | putting-together (insight) / full/upon-knowledge | Intellectual comprehension; relational, experiential “full knowledge” (ἐπί- intensifies) | understanding, knowledge, full knowledge | Full, relationally rooted knowledge of God’s will, not mere data. | MEDIUM. Rendering: 悟性/知识/真知 (wùxìng/zhīshi/zhēnzhī) depending on context. Distinguish from generic intellectual 知识; prefer 真知 or a qualifying phrase where the relational/experiential sense is primary. |
| power / might | δύναμις / κράτος | dynamis / kratos | ability / strength | Capability, strength, sometimes ruling power | power, might, strength | Extends the baseline’s “power of God” doctrine (神的大能, High risk) beyond its Romans 1:16 salvific-power context into a Colossians context of sustaining/enabling believers. | HIGH — reuse baseline term exactly. 大能. NEVER 气 (qì) or 法力, per baseline forbidden-substitution list. |
| endurance / patience | ὑπομονή / μακροθυμία | hypomonē / makrothymia | remaining-under / long-temperedness | Steadfast perseverance under pressure / patient forbearance toward others | endurance, patience, longsuffering | Fruit of Spirit-given strengthening (v.11), joined with joy — not stoic self-discipline. | MEDIUM. Rendering: 忍耐 (rěnnài). Distinguish from the Buddhist 忍辱 (rěnrù, “patience under insult”), one of the Six Perfections (pāramitā) cultivated by a bodhisattva toward liberation/merit. Biblical patience is Spirit-empowered fruit, not a self-cultivated perfection accruing merit. |
| redemption / forgiveness of sins | ἀπολύτρωσις / ἄφεσις τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν | apolytrōsis / aphesis tōn hamartiōn | buying-back / sending-away | Ransom-release from bondage by payment of a price; the cancellation/release of moral debt | redemption, forgiveness | God’s decisive rescue “from the domain of darkness” into the Son’s kingdom, purchased at a price (Christ’s blood, cf. 1:20). | HIGH. Rendering: 救赎 (jiùshú) for redemption; 罪的赦免/蒙赦 for forgiveness (罪 reused exactly from baseline). Risk of collision with the transactional folk-religious practice of 还愿 (huányuàn, repaying/fulfilling a vow to a deity after receiving a favor) — biblical redemption is God’s own initiative and payment on the sinner’s behalf, not a debt the sinner discharges to appease a deity. |
| domain/authority of darkness | ἐξουσία τοῦ σκότους | exousia tou skotous | authority of darkness | The present evil dominion of sin and hostile spiritual power, contrasted with God’s kingdom | power of darkness, dominion of darkness | Note ἐξουσία here is the same word used positively in 1:16 for created ranked powers under Christ — the term’s semantic range spans both a legitimate created order (1:16) and an illegitimate present dominion of evil (1:13). Translators must track sense per occurrence. | HIGH. Rendering: 黑暗的权势 (hēi’àn de quánshì). |
| kingdom of the Son | βασιλεία τοῦ υἱοῦ | basileia tou huiou | kingdom of the son | God’s reign now specifically identified with the beloved Son’s rule | kingdom of his beloved Son | Extension of baseline’s “kingdom_of_god” doctrine (神的国) directly onto Christ — consistency note for Phase 2: use 神的国 or 他爱子的国 consistently, not a novel phrase. | MEDIUM — reuse baseline pattern with Christological extension. |
Chapter 1, continued: 1:21–29 — Reconciliation Applied; Paul’s Suffering and the Mystery
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| mystery | μυστήριον | mystērion | that which is hidden until disclosed | A secret now revealed by God to all who believe, esp. Christ’s presence in and reception by the Gentiles | mystery, secret | Central to the letter’s polemic: the false teachers promised access to hidden, esoteric spiritual knowledge available only to initiates; Paul insists God’s “mystery” — Christ himself — has been openly, fully disclosed to every believer, not a spiritual elite. | HIGH. Rendering: 奥秘 (àomì). Must be distinguished from 秘传 (mìchuán, the secret lineage-transmission of esoteric technique in Daoist internal alchemy and various master-disciple traditions) and from 天机 (tiānjī, “heaven’s hidden mechanism,” language used by diviners/fortune-tellers for concealed cosmic secrets). Biblical mystery is revealed, not secretly transmitted to spiritual elites — this distinction is load-bearing for the entire “Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism” doctrine. |
| suffering / afflictions | παθήματα / θλῖψεις | pathēmata / thlipseis | things suffered / pressures | Paul’s apostolic, missionary suffering endured for the sake of the church | sufferings, afflictions | Col 1:24, “I fill up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” — a notoriously delicate phrase. | CRITICAL. Rendering: 患难 (huànnán) / 苦难 (kùnàn) for the noun; the compound “补满基督患难的缺欠” for the “filling up” idea. Doctrinal guardrail required in every teaching note: this must never be taught as implying Christ’s own atoning suffering (cf. 1:20, a finished, sufficient work) was in any way insufficient — directly protecting the curriculum’s “Sufficiency of Christ” doctrine. There is a specific and serious collision risk here: the Mahayana Buddhist bodhisattva ideal, in which an enlightened being voluntarily delays personal liberation and vicariously bears suffering to generate merit transferable to others, could lead readers to (mis)read Paul’s apostolic suffering as merit-generating vicarious suffering on the church’s behalf. Paul’s suffering is missionary/pastoral hardship endured because of an already-finished, all-sufficient atonement — not an addition to it. Human theologian review mandatory. |
| hope | ἐλπίς | elpis | expectation | Confident future expectation grounded in a reliable promise, vs. mere wishful desire | hope | ”Christ in you, the hope of glory” (1:27) — Christ’s indwelling presence is itself the guarantee of future glory. New term, not present in the Romans baseline package — requires its own registry entry. | MEDIUM-HIGH. Rendering: 盼望 (pànwàng), the established CUV term, distinct from generic 希望 (xīwàng, an ordinary hope/wish with uncertain outcome). Must be taught as a certainty grounded in Christ’s finished work and promise, not a wish for good fortune — the same fortune-seeking caution already flagged for 福音’s root 福 in the baseline applies by extension here. |
| glory | δόξα | doxa | weightiness, radiance, honor | God’s/Christ’s radiant honor and presence | glory | Reused exactly from baseline: 荣耀 (Medium risk). | Reuse baseline |
| striving / laboring | ἀγωνιζόμενος | agōnizomenos | contending, struggling (athletic/combat metaphor) | Paul’s intense labor in ministry, prayer, and teaching | struggling, striving, laboring | Rendering: 竭力 (jiélì) / 劳苦 (láokǔ). No major collision; note it is empowered by Christ’s energy at work in him (v.29), not self-generated effort — a minor echo of the grace-vs-merit caution. | Low-Medium |
Chapter 2 — Warning Against False Teaching and Syncretism
2:1–7 — Treasures of Wisdom Hidden in Christ
No entirely new terms; σοφία (wisdom, see ch.1), μυστήριον (mystery, see ch.1), and πίστις/faith (reused baseline term) recur here in intensified, polemical form (“in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge,” 2:3), directly answering the false teachers’ claim to superior, hidden wisdom. No additional glossary entries required; flag for review that these terms carry heightened doctrinal weight in this section as the letter’s thesis statement against syncretism (parallel in weight to Romans 1:16–17 in the Romans package — this section should be treated with equivalent consistency-of-rendering priority across all Colossians curriculum documents).
2:8–15 — Philosophy, Elemental Spirits, Circumcision, the Cancelled Debt, Triumph over the Powers
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| philosophy | φιλοσοφία | philosophia | love of wisdom | A comprehensive human system of thought/practice, here specifically the syncretistic false teaching at Colossae | philosophy, human wisdom-system | The one NT occurrence of this word; used negatively, paired with “empty deceit” and “tradition of men,” and contrasted with “according to Christ.” | CRITICAL. CUV renders this word 理学 (lǐxué) — which is also the historic proper name of the Cheng-Zhu School of Neo-Confucian metaphysics (理学, “the School of Principle,” Zhu Xi’s rationalist Confucian system). Using 理学 risks either (a) implying Paul condemns Confucian philosophical inquiry as such, which is not the text’s target, or (b) failing to signal that Paul is warning against any human philosophical/religious system that displaces Christ’s sufficiency, not one culturally specific school. Recommend flagging for theologian decision: consider 哲学 (zhéxué, the modern general-purpose loanword for “philosophy”) as an alternative to CUV’s 理学, explicitly noting the departure from CUV precedent and the reason. This is a Critical-tier decision point given the curriculum’s explicit “Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism” doctrine. |
| tradition of men | παράδοσις τῶν ἀνθρώπων | paradosis tōn anthrōpōn | handing-down of men | Human religious/cultural tradition, contrasted with Christ | tradition of men, human tradition | The false teaching is grounded in human custom, not divine revelation. | MEDIUM. CUV renders 人间的遗传 (rénjiān de yíchuán). Flag: in contemporary Mandarin, 遗传 has drifted strongly toward its biological sense (“heredity/genetics,” 遗传学 = genetics), risking reader confusion or an archaic feel. Recommend 人的传统 (rén de chuántǒng) for the modern-register curriculum, noting the departure from literal CUV wording as a clarity-driven update, per this package’s modern-standard-Mandarin register requirement. |
| elemental spirits / elementary principles | στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου | stoicheia tou kosmou | elements/basics of the world | Genuinely ambiguous in Greek: (a) “elementary teachings” (an ABC-level, rudimentary religious system, contrasted with Christ’s maturity); (b) personified cosmic/elemental spirit-powers governing the created order (aligning with the letter’s concern about astral/spirit veneration) | elemental spirits, elemental principles, elementary teachings | Central to the letter’s anti-syncretism polemic (also 2:20) — the false teaching may have involved reverence for cosmic powers governing fate, festivals, or purity regulations. | CRITICAL — unresolved interpretive ambiguity requiring theologian decision before translation. CUV renders sense (a): 世上的小学 (“the elementary learning of the world”). Sense (b) would instead require 世界的权势/灵 (“the world’s [spirit-]powers”). These two readings produce substantially different Mandarin renderings and different pastoral applications (one about doctrinal immaturity, the other about spiritual-power veneration). Given the doctrine at stake (“Warning against False Teaching and Syncretism”), this must be flagged for mandatory human theologian review with both readings documented before Phase 2 translation proceeds. |
| circumcision | περιτομή | peritomē | cutting-around | The Jewish covenant rite; here reinterpreted as “the circumcision of Christ,” a spiritual reality accomplished in union with Christ, not a physical rite | circumcision | Paul argues believers have already received the reality the rite pointed to, “made without hands,” in union with Christ’s death. | LOW-MEDIUM. Established rendering: 割礼 (gēlǐ), no native Chinese ritual practice competes for this term. Risk is purely catechetical: ensure readers understand this is a completed spiritual reality in Christ, not an ongoing physical obligation. |
| record of debt / bond | χειρόγραφον | cheirographon | hand-written document | A legal/financial written bond recording a debt or obligation | record of debt, handwriting of ordinances, bond, certificate of debt | God cancelled the legal indictment of sin’s debt against believers by nailing it to the cross — a decisive, once-for-all legal act. | HIGH. CUV rendering: 字据 (zìjù, “written bond/IOU”). This offers a genuinely useful — but risky — cultural bridge to the Chinese folk-religious concept of 功过簿 (gōngguò bù, the underworld/heavenly “ledger of merits and demerits” recorded by 阎王/城隍 and settled at judgment through accumulated good deeds). The bridge must be used contrastively: unlike a merit-ledger balanced gradually through good works offsetting bad, the legal debt of sin is entirely and immediately cancelled by Christ’s finished work on the cross — never gradually offset by merit (功德, already forbidden in the baseline grace entry). Theologian review required given the direct link to the Critical-tier Grace doctrine. |
| worship of angels | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | thrēskeia tōn angelōn | religious devotion to angels | Cultic veneration/worship directed to angelic intermediaries rather than to Christ directly | worship of angels | Named at 2:18 (treated below) but conceptually linked to this section’s warning against intermediary powers. | See 2:16–23 entry below. |
| rulers and authorities (defeated) | ἀρχαί καὶ ἐξουσίαι | archai kai exousiai | firsts / permissions-to-act | Same lexical pair as 1:16, here in a hostile sense: the powers are publicly disarmed and shamed through the cross | rulers and authorities, principalities and powers | 2:15’s imagery draws on the Roman military triumph — a victorious general parading defeated enemies through the streets. Christ’s cross is here presented (paradoxically) as this triumphal procession. | MEDIUM-HIGH. Same rendering and folk-bureaucracy collision risk as flagged at 1:16 above; additionally requires a cultural/historical explanatory note, since the Roman triumphal-procession image (θριαμβεύσας, “triumphing over them”) is unfamiliar to readers without Greco-Roman historical background — a comprehension gap rather than a doctrinal collision, but still requiring a translator’s note. |
2:16–23 — Warning Against Ascetic Regulations, Angel Worship, and Self-Made Religion
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| shadow / substance | σκιά / σῶμα | skia / sōma | shadow / body | σκιά = a foreshadowing outline; σῶμα here (distinct from its “church body” sense in 1:18!) = the solid reality behind a shadow | shadow…substance, shadow…reality | OT ceremonial regulations (festivals, food laws) were a shadow anticipating Christ, who is the reality/substance itself | MEDIUM-HIGH. CUV renders this second sense of σῶμα distinctly, e.g. 形体/实体 (xíngtǐ/shítǐ), NOT the same word (身体) used for “church as the body of Christ” at 1:18. Translators must not conflate these two Mandarin renderings under one English gloss “body” — a real risk given both are the same Greek word. Flag for consistency review. |
| worship of angels | θρησκεία τῶν ἀγγέλων | thrēskeia tōn angelōn | religious devotion to angels | Cultic veneration/worship directed at angels rather than at Christ, likely tied to the local false teaching’s claim of visionary access to the angelic/heavenly realm | worship of angels | Condemned as a self-abasing practice disconnected from, and displacing, Christ the Head (2:19) | HIGH. Rendering: 敬拜天使 (jìngbài tiānshǐ). 敬拜 is the same verb used for worshipping God — risk that readers might read this as merely a variant devotional practice rather than a condemned displacement of Christ. Directly parallels the veneration of intermediary spirits/deities pervasive in Chinese folk religion (土地公、城隍、various intermediary spirits approached instead of, or alongside, the supreme deity) — a close, load-bearing cultural analogy for the letter’s central polemic. Theologian review required; this is one of the most directly transferable warnings in the letter for a Chinese context. |
| self-made religion / self-imposed piety | ἐθελοθρησκία | ethelothrēskia | self-willed worship | A rare compound (one NT occurrence) describing devotion and asceticism devised by human will rather than commanded by God | self-made religion, self-imposed piety, would-be religion | Paired with false humility and bodily asceticism (“severity to the body”) that Paul says has “no value against the flesh” (2:23) | HIGH. CUV rendering: 私意崇拜 (sīyì chóngbài, “worship by private/self-will”). Directly parallels ascetic self-mortification practice in Chinese Buddhist and Daoist monastic tradition (苦行, kǔxíng) undertaken to accumulate merit or attain spiritual advancement. Paul’s explicit verdict — such practices are “of no value” — is a direct, load-bearing challenge to any merit-through-self-effort spirituality, extending the Critical-tier grace-vs-merit distinction already established in the baseline. Theologian review required. |
| humility (ironic/false sense) | ταπεινοφροσύνη | tapeinophrosynē | lowly-mindedness | Same Greek word used both negatively here (a performative, ascetic self-abasement with no spiritual value) and positively at 3:12 (a genuine, Spirit-given virtue) | (false) humility | Requires careful contextual disambiguation — the same word names both a condemned practice and a commended virtue within the same letter | MEDIUM. Rendering: 谦卑 (qiānbēi) in both places. This is not a Mandarin-culture collision but an internal-text ambiguity: every occurrence needs a translator’s contextual note distinguishing “false, self-displaying humility” (2:18, 2:23) from “true, Christ-given humility” (3:12), since the identical Mandarin word will otherwise carry only one, undifferentiated meaning for readers. |
Chapter 3 — Union with Christ; Putting Off the Old Self and Putting On the New; Household Codes
3:1–4 — Seek the Things Above; Hidden with Christ
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| raised with Christ | συνηγέρθητε | synēgerthēte | raised-together-with | Believers’ identification with Christ’s own resurrection, already accomplished positionally | raised with Christ | Extends baseline’s “resurrection” doctrine (复活, Critical) from Christ’s own historical resurrection into the believer’s union with him — a distinct but related sense | CRITICAL — reuse baseline term exactly. 复活, in the compound 一同复活 (“raised together with him”). The baseline’s forbidden-substitution list (NEVER 轮回/投胎/还魂) applies with full force here, since this is precisely the doctrine where a reincarnation-cycle misreading would be most damaging — being “raised with Christ” must never sound like being reborn into a new bodily existence in an ongoing cycle. |
| hidden with Christ | κέκρυπται σὺν τῷ Χριστῷ | kekryptai syn tō Christō | has been hidden together with | The believer’s present life and identity are secured, safe, in God, awaiting future manifestation | hidden with Christ in God | Security of the believer’s new identity, not yet fully visible | LOW-MEDIUM. Rendering: 与基督一同藏在神里面. Straightforward; minor risk of confusion with concealment/secrecy language already flagged for μυστήριον — clarify this is security, not esotericism. |
| appear (in glory) | φανερωθῇ | phanerōthē | be made visible/manifest | Christ’s future public appearing (his return), at which believers’ hidden glory will likewise be revealed | appear, be revealed, be manifested | Ties believer’s future hope of glory (cf. 1:27) to Christ’s future appearing | LOW. Rendering: 显现 (xiǎnxiàn). Reuses established 荣耀 (baseline) for “glory.” |
3:5–11 — Putting Off the Old Self; Unity in Christ
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| put off / put to death | ἀπεκδύομαι / νεκρώσατε | apekdyomai / nekrōsate | to strip off (a garment) / to put to death | Decisive, once-for-all removal, using clothing and mortal-death imagery | put off, put to death, strip off | A decisive break with the old, sinful pattern of life, grounded in union with Christ’s own death — not a gradual self-improvement project | HIGH. Rendering: 脱去/治死. Must be distinguished from gradual Confucian self-cultivation toward moral improvement (修身, “cultivating the self”) — this is a definitive, Spirit-enabled break grounded in the believer’s death with Christ (3:3), not an incremental ethical achievement. |
| old self / old man | παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος | palaios anthrōpos | old/former human being | The believer’s former identity and pattern of life “in Adam,” decisively put off | old self, old man, old nature | Establishes a definitive change of identity, not merely of behavior | HIGH. Established rendering: 旧人 (jiù rén). |
| new self / new man | νέος/καινός ἄνθρωπος | neos/kainos anthrōpos | new human being | The believer’s new identity, “being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” — deliberately echoing εἰκών from 1:15! | new self, new man, new nature | Links the anthropology of personal renewal back to the Christology of the core passage: believers are being remade after the pattern of the very Christ who is himself God’s perfect εἰκών | HIGH. Established rendering: 新人 (xīn rén). The recurrence of 形像 (image) at 3:10 must use the identical Mandarin term established at 1:15, preserving the deliberate intertextual link the letter itself makes between Christ as God’s image (1:15) and the believer’s renewal into that same image (3:10) — an important cross-reference consistency requirement for Phase 2. |
| neither Greek nor Jew… Christ is all, and in all | οὔκ ἔνι Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος… ἀλλὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσιν Χριστός | — | there is no Greek and Jew… but Christ [is] all things and in all | A unity formula (paralleling Gal 3:28) eliminating ethnic, religious, and social distinctions in the new humanity | neither Greek nor Jew, Christ is all and in all | Extends baseline’s “unity_of_jews_and_gentiles” doctrine (High risk in Romans registry) into Colossians’ ethical/anthropological argument | HIGH — reuse baseline doctrine pattern. Retain full, unqualified universal language; resist any softening toward a civilizational-hierarchy reading, per the same caution already documented in the Romans baseline regarding the classical Hua-Yi (华夷) insider/outsider distinction. |
3:12–17 — Putting On the New Self: Virtues, Love, Peace, and the Word of Christ
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| God’s chosen ones | ἐκλεκτοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ | eklektoi tou theou | the chosen-out ones of God | Personal, gracious divine choice — same root as baseline’s “election” | God’s chosen, elect | Reuses baseline’s election doctrine (拣选, High risk) as the ground of the ethical exhortation that follows | HIGH — reuse baseline exactly. 拣选. NEVER 天命/命运/缘分, per baseline forbidden list. |
| compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience | σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότητα, ταπεινοφροσύνην, πραΰτητα, μακροθυμίαν | — | bowels of mercy, kindness, lowly-mindedness, gentleness, long-suffering | A virtue list to be “put on” like clothing, in contrast to the vice list “put off” at 3:5-9 | compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience | Fruit of the Spirit-given new self, not self-generated ethical achievement | MEDIUM. Standard renderings: 怜悯的心、恩慈、谦卑、温柔、忍耐. See ταπεινοφροσύνη note above (2:18/2:23) for the internal-ambiguity flag; 忍耐 reuses the note already given in ch.1 re: Buddhist 忍辱 collision. |
| forgiving one another | χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς | charizomenoi heautois | granting favor to one another | The same root as χάρις (“grace”) used here as a verb: forgiving as an act flowing from having received grace | forgive, bear with | Directly models the Critical-tier grace doctrine in interpersonal practice: “as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive” | HIGH. Rendering: 彼此饶恕/互相宽容. Should be explicitly taught alongside 恩典 (grace) to reinforce that horizontal forgiveness flows from, and mirrors, the vertical grace already received — not a separate merit-based reciprocity. |
| love / bond of perfection | ἀγάπη / σύνδεσμος τῆς τελειότητος | agapē / syndesmos tēs teleiotētos | self-giving love / binding-link of completeness | The culminating virtue that unites and completes all the others, “binding” them into a coherent whole | love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony | Love is not one virtue alongside others but the integrating bond that holds the whole Christian ethical life together | MEDIUM-HIGH. Rendering: 爱/爱心 with CUV’s associated phrase 联络全德的 (“that which links together complete virtue”). Flag: 全德 (“complete virtue”) risks a Confucian ethical-completion reading (virtue accomplished through cultivated relational duty) rather than the Spirit-given, Christ-grounded love the passage actually describes. Requires a clarifying note distinguishing this from Confucian virtue-perfection, paralleling the caution the baseline already applies to 义 (righteousness) and 成圣 (sanctification). |
| peace of Christ | εἰρήνη τοῦ Χριστοῦ | eirēnē tou Christou | peace of Christ | Here the personal, internal governing peace ruling in believers’ hearts — distinct from the cosmic, achieved peace of 1:20 | let the peace of Christ rule | This occurrence aligns with the baseline’s existing 平安 sense (Rom 5:1, personal/relational peace with God), NOT the 和平 sense flagged at 1:20 | MEDIUM — reuse baseline 平安, with explicit note distinguishing it from the 和平 sense at 1:20. |
| word of Christ | λόγος τοῦ Χριστοῦ | logos tou Christou | word/message of Christ | The gospel message/teaching about Christ, to indwell believers richly | word of Christ | Christ’s teaching/message dwelling richly in the believing community, expressed through mutual teaching and song | HIGH. CUV-pattern rendering uses 道 (dào) here — 基督的道. This is a second, distinct occurrence of the same collision already flagged in the baseline for 道成肉身 (“incarnation”): 道 also names the impersonal cosmic principle of Daoist metaphysics, and “letting the道 dwell richly within” risks sounding like an inner Daoist cultivation practice (internalizing 道 through meditative technique, as in Daoist neidan/internal alchemy). Every occurrence requires the same clarifying note already mandated for 道成肉身: this is the personal message/teaching of the historical Christ, not an impersonal cosmic principle to be internalized through spiritual technique. |
| psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | ψαλμοῖς, ὕμνοις, ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς | psalmois, hymnois, ōdais pneumatikais | psalms, hymns, spirit-songs | Corporate musical worship forms | psalms, hymns, spiritual songs | Communal teaching and worship through song | MEDIUM-HIGH. Rendering: 诗章、颂词、灵歌. Flag ᾠδαῖς πνευματικαῖς → 灵歌 (“spirit songs”): 灵 (líng) used without the 圣 qualifier risks the same ambiguity the baseline strictly forbids for the Holy Spirit (never 灵 alone; cf. 灵媒, língméi, “spirit medium,” associated with folk-religious trance/possession practice). Recommend an explicit qualifying gloss (e.g., “被圣灵感动而唱的灵歌”) or a footnote clarifying these are Spirit-inspired congregational songs, not shamanistic spirit-channeling. |
3:18–4:1 — Household Codes
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| submit | ὑποτάσσω | hypotassō | to arrange under | Voluntary, ordered submission within a relationship, not coerced subjugation | submit, be subject to | Wives instructed to submit to husbands “as is fitting in the Lord” — every household relationship is explicitly reframed “in the Lord” | MEDIUM-HIGH. Rendering: 顺服 (shùnfú), the same root already used in the baseline’s “obedience_of_faith” (因信而生的顺服). Every household-code occurrence must be anchored to its explicit qualifier “in the Lord” / “as is fitting in the Lord,” to prevent collapse into a generic patriarchal social hierarchy detached from its Christ-centered framing, and must be read alongside the immediately following command to husbands (love, do not be harsh) which qualifies and balances it. |
| obey | ὑπακούω | hypakouō | to hear under, heed | Compliance/obedience owed within a defined relationship (children to parents, slaves to masters) | obey | Applied to children (“obey your parents in everything”) and to bondservants (“obey your earthly masters”) | MEDIUM. Rendering: 听从/顺从 (tīngcóng/shùncóng). Distinguish from 孝顺 (xiàoshùn, Confucian filial obedience owed to parents/ancestors as an ethical duty rooted in ancestor-honoring cosmology), already flagged in the baseline’s “obedience_of_faith” note — the household-code obedience here is grounded in pleasing the Lord (3:20, 3:22), not in an independent filial-piety ethic, even though the two may look similar in practice. |
| bondservants / slaves | δοῦλοι | douloi | slaves | Persons in a position of legal bondage/servitude, addressed directly as full moral agents and, remarkably, exhorted to serve “as to the Lord” | bondservants, slaves | Greco-Roman slavery, though a real social institution addressed directly by the text, differs substantially from both modern chattel slavery and from historical Chinese bonded household-servant practice (奴婢) — cultural/historical background note required for reader comprehension | MEDIUM. Rendering: 奴仆 (núpú). Requires an explanatory cultural-background note (not primarily a doctrinal collision) to prevent readers projecting either an overly harsh modern-slavery frame or an overly benign 奴婢 frame onto the text. |
| masters (human) / Master (Christ) | κύριος (of human masters, 3:22, 4:1) / κύριος (of Christ, throughout) | kyrios | lord, master, owner | The same Greek word (κύριος) is used for BOTH the human master and the divine Lord — Paul deliberately exploits this overlap: bondservants serve their human κύριος ultimately as service to the true κύριος, Christ, and human masters are reminded they too have a κύριος in heaven | master(s) / Lord | The wordplay reinforces that all human authority relationships are relativized and reframed under Christ’s ultimate Lordship | MEDIUM — important translation/exegetical note, not a mistranslation risk. Mandarin naturally uses two different words — 主人 (zhǔrén) for the human master, 主 (zhǔ) for the divine Lord — which is doctrinally correct per the baseline’s existing rule (主人 is explicitly rejected as too weak a term for Christ’s exclusive Lordship). However, this means Paul’s Greek wordplay is necessarily lost in Mandarin. Instruction for Phase 2: compensate for the lost pun with an explicit clause or footnote (e.g., “你们的主人虽是人,但你们真正是服在主耶稣面前”) rather than attempting to force a lexical pun that Mandarin does not support. |
| inheritance | κληρονομία | klēronomia | inherited allotment | The promised reward/inheritance believers will receive from the Lord, extended even to bondservants who have no legal inheritance rights under Roman law | inheritance, reward | Directly connects to the baseline’s “adoption” doctrine (High risk): the inheritance a slave receives “from the Lord” is not through human legal status but through spiritual sonship | HIGH. CUV-pattern rendering: 基业 (jīyè), the established theological term distinct from ordinary secular 遗产 (yíchǎn, “inheritance from a deceased relative”). Reinforces the baseline’s adoption doctrine: full inheritance-rights sonship, not a lesser or provisional status — here extended pointedly to those with no inheritance rights in Roman society. |
Chapter 4 — Prayer, Wisdom Toward Outsiders, Closing Greetings
4:2–6 — Prayer and Speech Toward Outsiders
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| prayer / watchfulness | προσευχή / γρηγορέω | proseuchē / grēgoreō | prayer / to stay awake | General, continual prayer, joined with alertness | prayer, watchfulness | Distinct from, but related to, the baseline’s “intercession” (代求, praying specifically on behalf of others) — προσευχή is the broader general term for prayer | LOW-MEDIUM. Rendering: 祷告 (dǎogào). No major new collision; note relation to baseline’s 代求 (intercession) as a narrower sub-category. |
| open door | θύρα τοῦ λόγου | thyra tou logou | door of the word | An opportunity for gospel proclamation | open door for the word | Standard missions metaphor | LOW. Rendering: 传道的门/机会. Natural door-metaphor, minimal risk. |
| wisdom toward outsiders | σοφία, πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω | sophia, pros tous exō | wisdom, toward those outside | Practical, Christ-honoring conduct and speech toward non-believers | walk in wisdom toward outsiders | Reuses σοφία (see ch.1 entry) in an applied, missional sense | See ch.1 σοφία entry; additionally connects to baseline’s “mission” doctrine (宣教) and its caution re: the historic 洋教 (“foreign religion”) stigma — teaching should frame gracious, winsome public conduct rather than confrontational messaging. |
| gracious speech, seasoned with salt | ἐν χάριτι, ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος | en chariti, halati ērtymenos | in grace, seasoned with salt | Here χάρις is used in its ordinary, non-technical ethical sense — “gracious, winsome, tactful speech” — NOT the soteriological “saving grace” sense fixed at 恩典 in the baseline | let your speech be gracious | An important exception the AI system must recognize: not every occurrence of χάρις is the Critical-tier doctrinal term | MEDIUM — important exception flag. CUV commonly renders this ethical, non-technical sense as 和气 (héqi, “amiable, warm, harmonious speech” — a term resonant with, and appropriately borrowing from, the Confucian ideal of relational harmony). Instruction for Phase 2: the AI system must not mechanically apply the baseline’s “always render χάρις as 恩典” rule in every context; 4:6 is a deliberate, low-risk exception where the everyday ethical sense is intended, and 和气 is the doctrinally safe and contextually correct choice here. |
4:7–18 — Closing Greetings and Instructions
| Term | Greek | Translit. | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual meaning | Mandarin risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| minister / servant | διάκονος | diakonos | one who serves/waits at table | General ministry service (Epaphras, Tychicus); not yet the later fixed technical office of “deacon” | minister, servant | Describes faithful gospel co-laborers | MEDIUM. Rendering: 执事 (zhíshì). Note: 执事 can also denote a general temple/religious-institution functionary in ordinary Chinese usage (庙里的执事) — ensure the specifically Christian gospel-ministry sense is clear from context, compounding the caution already noted for 教会 in the baseline. |
| fellow servant / fellow bondservant | σύνδουλος | syndoulos | co-slave | A term of solidarity among gospel workers | fellow servant, fellow bondservant | Applied to Epaphras and Tychicus | LOW. Rendering: 一同作仆人的. Straightforward compound, low risk. |
| fellow worker | συνεργός | synergos | co-worker | Gospel co-laborers named in the greetings | fellow worker | Corporate, team-based gospel ministry | LOW. Rendering: 同工 (tónggōng). Standard, well-established term. |
| proper names (Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus, etc.) | — | — | — | Personal proper names | — | Greetings to and from named individuals in the Colossae/Laodicea circle | LOW. Transliterate per established Chinese Bible-translation conventions (many already fixed across the CUV NT, e.g. 推基古, 阿尼西母, 亚里达古, 马可, 犹士都, 以巴弗, 路加, 底马, 宁法, 亚基布). No doctrinal risk; consistency with existing CUV proper-name forms required per the baseline’s transliteration standards. |
Summary of Highest-Priority Cross-Chapter Risk Themes
- The εἰκών/πρωτότοκος/πλήρωμα/θεότης cluster (1:15, 1:19, 2:9, 3:10) — the Christological spine of the letter; every occurrence carries Critical risk and must be cross-referenced together in Phase 2 review, since the letter deliberately threads these terms across chapters (Christ as image → church renewed into that same image, 3:10).
- The θρόνοι/κυριότητες/ἀρχαί/ἐξουσίαι cluster (1:16, 2:10, 2:15) — recurring across three chapters, this is the letter’s sustained argument against a rival spiritual-power hierarchy, with a direct and load-bearing collision risk against Chinese folk-religious celestial/underworld bureaucracy.
- The σοφία / μυστήριον / φιλοσοφία / στοιχεῖα / ἐθελοθρησκία cluster (1:9, 1:26–27, 2:3, 2:8, 2:18, 2:23) — the anti-syncretism polemic at the letter’s structural center; several of these terms (especially φιλοσοφία → 理学 and στοιχεῖα’s interpretive ambiguity) require explicit theologian decisions before any Phase 2 translation proceeds.
- Two distinct Mandarin words required for one English gloss “peace”: 平安 (personal, relational peace with God, reused from the Romans baseline; also Col 3:15) vs. 和平 (cosmic, achieved reconciliation-peace, Col 1:20) — a consistency rule that must be documented explicitly for the AI translation system.
- Grace-vs-merit polemic extends beyond Romans’ 功德 caution into two new fronts: the ascetic self-effort of 2:23 (ἐθελοθρησκία) and the debt-cancellation imagery of 2:14 (χειρόγραφον vs. 功过簿) — both require the same Critical-tier grace safeguard already established in the baseline.
