Core Glossary
Ezra — Core Glossary (Phase 1, Step 1)
This glossary compiles every load-bearing theological term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, spanning the entire book of Ezra (chapters 1–10). It is organized in two tiers:
- Tier 1 — Reused from the Romans Baseline (mandarin): terms already fixed in the baseline
translation_memory.json. These renderings MUST be used exactly as recorded; no re-derivation is permitted. Ezra-specific usage notes are added only where the doctrinal valence shifts from the Romans context. - Tier 2 — New Terms Required for Ezra: terms with no baseline entry, proposed here with full risk grounding, for incorporation into an Ezra-specific translation memory extension in Phase 1 Step 2.
Risk tiers (Critical / High / Medium / Low) and review routing follow the same definitions as the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json: Critical and High require human theologian review; Medium requires native speaker review; Low requires automated review only.
Tier 1 — Reused Baseline Terms (Mandarin Rendering Fixed; Do Not Alter)
| English Term | Mandarin (Baseline) | Transliteration | Risk (Baseline) | Ezra Chapters | Ezra-Specific Usage Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| God (generic, Elohim) | 神 | Shén | Critical | 1–10 | Used both for the true God and, in narrative contrast, in compounds referring to pagan deities (e.g. “house of his gods,” 1:7) — the pagan referent must use 神明/庙 framing, never 圣殿/殿, to keep the exclusive-monotheism contrast visible. |
| Israel | 以色列 | Yǐsèliè | Medium | 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10 | Consistently the covenant people’s name; no valence shift from Romans. |
| Gentiles | 外邦人 | wàibāngrén | Medium | 4, 6, 9, 10 | Valence shift required as a teaching note: in Romans, 外邦人 is the neutral-to-positive object of gospel mission (“no distinction,” baseline). In Ezra 9–10 (“peoples of the lands”), the referent is specifically idol-worshiping neighboring populations whose religious syncretism threatens covenant fidelity — the concern is idolatry, not ethnicity. Do not let Ezra’s negative usage bleed into a general anti-Gentile reading elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| Holy | 圣洁 | shèngjié | High | 8 (vessels “holy to the LORD”), 9 (“holy seed,” compound term — see Tier 2) | Reused for consecration formulas (器皿归耶和华为圣). See Tier 2 “holy seed” for the compound risk. |
| Covenant | 约 | yuē | High | 10 | Elevated to functional High/Critical weight in Ezra 10’s covenant-renewal act (立约); avoid commercial-contract vocabulary (合同/契约), per baseline note. |
| Law (Mosaic) | 律法 | lǜfǎ | High | 1, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10 | Central term throughout; always specify object (“耶和华的律法”/“摩西的律法”). Never equate with 王的法令 (king’s law, Tier 2) or with Confucian 礼. |
| Sin | 罪 | zuì | High | 9, 10 | Reused for the general concept; note Tier 2 “罪愆” (ma’al, covenant unfaithfulness) as a related but distinct, more specific term used in Ezra’s confession vocabulary. |
| Prophet | 先知 | xiānzhī | Low | 1 (Jeremiah), 5 (Haggai, Zechariah) | No valence shift; distinguish from fortune-teller (算命先生) per baseline. |
| Glory | 荣耀 | róngyào | Medium | (implicit, temple dedication contexts) | Available for use in dedication/worship passages if source text employs it; no direct occurrence required a new coinage in the analyzed chapters. |
| Thanksgiving | 感恩 | gǎn’ēn | Low | 3 (antiphonal refrain), 6 | Standard usage; pairs with Tier 2 “chesed/慈爱” in the ch. 3 refrain. |
| Providence | 神的护理 | Shén de hùlǐ | High | 1, 5, 6, 7, 8 | Reused as the theological category underlying the recurring “hand of God” idiom (Tier 2); must not collapse into impersonal 天意, per baseline note — Ezra intensifies this risk because providence here operates through a pagan king. |
| Election / Calling | 拣选 / 呼召 | jiǎnxuǎn / hūzhào | High | 1 | Available for teaching the theological link between God’s “stirring” of the exiles’ spirits (Tier 2, 激动…的心) and his sovereign, gracious choice of a people; not a direct lexical match but a doctrinal parallel worth cross-referencing. |
| David | 大卫 | Dàwèi | Medium | 1 (Sheshbazzar), 3 | Used cautiously re: Davidic-line continuity in the leadership of the return; do not overclaim restored monarchy. |
| Grace | 恩典 | ēndiǎn | Critical | 1 (freewill offerings), 9–10 (restoration despite unfaithfulness) | Thematically present throughout as the ground of restoration; contrast with 功德 (merit) remains fully in force per baseline, and is arguably more urgent in Ezra than in Romans, since the returnees’ entire history (exile, decree, provision, protection) is framed as undeserved covenant mercy, not repayment for good behavior. |
Tier 2 — New Terms Required for Ezra (Proposed for Translation Memory Extension)
| # | English Term | Mandarin | Transliteration (Orig.) | Risk | Doctrine Category | Chapters | Grounded Risk Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | LORD (YHWH, divine name) | 耶和华 | YHWH | Critical | Sovereignty / Divine Name | 1–10 (pervasive) | Companion proper name to baseline’s 神 (Elohim); must remain distinct so readers see this is the specific covenant God directing history, not a generic deity. |
| 2 | Word of the LORD | 耶和华的话 | devar-YHWH | High | Role of Scripture / Fulfillment of Prophecy | 1 | Must connect to 预言 (baseline “prophecy,” Medium) so the decree reads as fulfillment of a specific prior oracle, not generic providence. |
| 3 | Fulfilled (prophecy) | 应验 | likhlot | Medium | Fulfillment of Prophecy | 1 | Guard against a cyclical (治乱循环) historiographical misreading; fulfillment is linear and one-time. |
| 4 | Stirred up (the spirit/heart) | 激动…的心 | he’ir | High | God’s Sovereignty over Pagan Nations | 1, 6, 7 | Highest risk of collapse into impersonal Mandate-of-Heaven (天命) reasoning, since it describes God moving an unbelieving pagan king’s will — requires an explicit teaching note at every occurrence. |
| 5 | Spirit/heart (human, ruach) | 心 / 灵 | ruach | Medium | (support term) | 1 | Must not be confused with 圣灵 (Holy Spirit, baseline Critical); this is the human spirit/will being acted upon. |
| 6 | Kingdom (secular, Persian) | 国 / 国度 | malkhut | Medium | Sovereignty over Pagan Nations | 1, 4, 6, 7 | Must not be conflated with baseline’s 神的国 (Kingdom of God). |
| 7 | Decree / Proclamation | 诏令 / 公告 | qol / nishtevana | High | Sovereignty over Pagan Nations | 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 | Risk of flattening into ordinary imperial-edict politics (皇帝诏书 associations), losing the prophecy-fulfillment and providence framing. |
| 8 | God of Heaven | 天上的神 | Elohei HaShamayim / Elah Shemaya | Critical | Divine Name / Sovereignty | 1, 5, 6, 7 | Never shorten to 天 alone; the exact surface form of the risk the baseline’s “god” entry already warns against, now spoken by pagan officials themselves. |
| 9 | House / Temple | 殿 / 圣殿 | bayit | High | Restoration of Temple Worship | 1–8 | Never 庙/寺/道观 (baseline’s forbidden set for “church,” extended here to the actual temple building); early occurrences need a clarifying note (one God, no idol image). |
| 10 | Go up / Return | 归回 / 上到…去 | alah | High | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 1, 2, 7, 8 | Wordplay with שׁוּב (turn/repent) should be taught even though Mandarin cannot lexically unify both senses. |
| 11 | Rebuild | 重建 | banah | Medium | Restoration of Temple Worship | 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 | Distinguish from 复兴 (revival, a different contemporary Christian-Mandarin connotation). |
| 12 | Remnant / Survivor | 余民 / 剩下的人 | nish’ar / she’erit | High | Sovereignty / Restoration | 1, 9 | Preservation is God’s gracious act, not fortunate escape from bad fortune (报应-adjacent folk reading). |
| 13 | Freewill offering | 甘心祭 | nedavah | Medium | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 1 | Must not read as merit-generating (功德-adjacent); gratitude-driven, not obligation-discharging. |
| 14 | Priests | 祭司 | kohanim | Medium | Restoration of Temple Worship | 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 | Distinguish from Daoist priest (道士) / Buddhist monk (和尚). |
| 15 | Levites | 利未人 | Leviyim | Low | Restoration of Temple Worship | 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 | Established proper-tribal-name pattern. |
| 16 | Vessels (temple) | 器皿 | kelim / kelei | Medium-High | Restoration of Temple Worship | 1, 5, 6, 8 | Distinguish from generic multi-deity ritual paraphernalia of folk temples; consecrated exclusively to the one God’s worship. |
| 17 | Treasurer | 库官 | gizbar | Low | (administrative) | 1 | — |
| 18 | Prince / Leader | 首领 | nasi | Medium | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 1 | Avoid overclaiming restored Davidic monarchy. |
| 19 | Exiles / Exile community | 被掳之人 / 流亡者 | golah | High | Sovereignty / Restoration / Confession | 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10 | Covenantal discipline-then-mercy framing must be preserved; not mere political displacement or bad luck. |
| 20 | Genealogical registration | 家谱 / 宗谱 | hityachsu | High | Restoration of Temple Worship | 2 | Collision with Chinese ancestor-lineage genealogy books (族谱); concern is covenant qualification for service, not ancestor veneration. |
| 21 | Excluded/defiled from priesthood | 视为不洁而从祭司职任中革除 | vaygo’alu (ga’al II) | High | Restoration of Temple Worship | 2 | Lexical trap: homographic with, but opposite in sense to, גאל “redeem.” Flag for translators using concordance tools. |
| 22 | Temple servants | 尼提宁 (+ gloss 圣殿仆役) | netinim | Low | Restoration of Temple Worship | 2 | Positive early counter-example to the exclusionary crisis of chs. 9–10. |
| 23 | Altar | 祭坛 | mizbeach | High | Restoration of Temple Worship | 3 | Distinguish from household/ancestral shrine altars (家中神坛, 祖先牌位); exclusive to the one God’s covenant sacrificial system. |
| 24 | Burnt offering | 燔祭 | olah | Medium | Restoration of Temple Worship | 3 | Distinguish from ancestor-offering incense practices (烧香祭祖). |
| 25 | Feast of Booths | 住棚节 | Chag HaSukkot | Low-Medium | Restoration of Temple Worship | 3 | Primary risk is reader unfamiliarity, not syncretistic collision. |
| 26 | Foundation (of temple) | 根基 | yesod | Medium | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 3 | Preserve metaphorical resonance (stability/beginning) without over-importing unrelated NT “foundation” texts. |
| 27 | Steadfast love / covenant loyalty | 慈爱 | chesed | Critical | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal / Sovereignty | 3 | Shares 慈 with Buddhist 慈悲 (universal compassion); must be anchored to God’s specific covenant faithfulness, not undifferentiated cosmic compassion. Distinct from, and complementary to, baseline’s 恩典 and 约. |
| 28 | Adversary / opposition | 敌意 / 阻挠 | sitnah | Medium | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 4 | Note shared root with שָׂטָן without over-spiritualizing every human opponent. |
| 29 | Letter / official document | 奏文 / 官方文书 | nishtevana | Low-Medium | (genre marker) | 4, 5 | Register shift to formal bureaucratic Mandarin for quoted correspondence. |
| 30 | Province | 省 | medinah | Low | Sovereignty over Pagan Nations | 4 | — |
| 31 | Record / memorandum | 档案 / 记录 | dikhronah | Low | Role of Scripture / Sovereignty | 5 | Reinforces historical, documented character of the narrative. |
| 32 | Dedication (of the temple) | 奉献殿 | chanukkah | Critical | Restoration of Temple Worship | 6 | NEVER 开光 (Buddhist/Daoist ritual “activation” of an idol/object with numinous power) — inverts the doctrine that God’s presence is not generated by the ritual. |
| 33 | Passover | 逾越节 | Pesach | Medium | Restoration of Temple Worship | 6 | Present on its own historical-liturgical terms; do not over-import NT Passover typology unless explicitly cross-referenced. |
| 34 | Purified themselves | 洁净 | taharu | Medium | Restoration of Temple Worship | 6 | Distinguish from Daoist ritual/meditative purity (清净, already forbidden under baseline’s “holy”). |
| 35 | Scribe | 文士 | sofer | High | Role of Scripture in Community Renewal | 7 | Collision with Confucian scholar-official (士大夫) ideal; Ezra’s authority is devotion to God’s own revealed Law, not a humanly-authored classical canon. |
| 36 | King’s law / decree | 王的法令 | data di-malka | Medium | Role of Scripture | 7 | Must stay lexically distinct from 律法 (reserved for Torah). |
| 37 | The (good) hand of God | 神施恩的手 / 耶和华的手 | yad-YHWH | High | Sovereignty / Providence | 7, 8 | Connect to baseline’s 神的护理; must not drift toward impersonal 天意. |
| 38 | Set his heart to study/seek | 定志考究 / 立志寻求律法 | darash | Medium | Role of Scripture in Community Renewal | 7 | Distinguish from Confucian classical-text scholarship (读经典) pursued for self-cultivation/social advancement. |
| 39 | Statutes and rules | 律例典章 | chukkim umishpatim | Medium | Role of Scripture | 7 | Reinforces Torah’s concrete legal-covenantal content. |
| 40 | Fast | 禁食 | tzom | High | Confession and Corporate Repentance | 8 | Distinguish from Buddhist/Daoist merit-generating ascetic fasting (斋戒). |
| 41 | Humbled / afflicted themselves | 自卑 / 刻苦己心 | hit’anot | Medium-High | Confession and Corporate Repentance | 8 | Avoid ascetic self-mortification-as-merit (修苦行) connotations. |
| 42 | Confession | 认罪 | vayitvadeh (yadah) | Critical | Confession and Corporate Repentance | 9, 10 | Distinguish absolutely from Buddhist ritual confession (忏悔, a karmic-merit technique) and from the purely legal “plead guilty” sense; this is relational, covenantal acknowledgment before a personal God. Anchor term for the doctrine. |
| 43 | Trespass / unfaithfulness | 罪愆 / 亏负 | ma’al | High | Confession and Corporate Repentance | 9 | Covenant betrayal, not impersonal bad-karma (报应) or mere legal infraction. |
| 44 | Holy seed | 圣洁的后裔 | zera qodesh | Critical | Separation from Syncretism | 9 | Highest pastoral risk in the book: must never be taught as ethnic/bloodline purity (collision with Chinese lineage-purity concepts and modern ethnonationalism); the concern is exclusive covenant fidelity/idolatry, not ethnicity. |
| 45 | Intermingled / intermarried with peoples of the lands | 与列邦民族通婚混杂 | hit’arvu b’amei ha’aratzot | High | Separation from Syncretism | 9 | Valence shift from baseline’s neutral/positive 外邦人 (Romans mission context) to a specifically negative syncretism-risk referent; must not bleed backward into anti-Gentile reading elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| 46 | Abomination | 可憎的事 | to’evah | Medium-High | Separation from Syncretism | 9 | Maintain formal CUV register; do not soften. |
| 47 | Ashamed / shame | 蒙羞 / 羞愧 | bosh / kalam | Medium | Confession and Corporate Repentance | 9 | Vertical (before God) shame distinct from, though not wholly unrelated to, horizontal social face-loss (面子); pastoral opportunity flagged in baseline system prompt. |
| 48 | Assembly / congregation | 会众 | qahal | Medium | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 2, 10 | Distinct from NT-era 教会 (church, baseline term); pre-Christian covenant congregation gathered at a specific place/moment. |
| 49 | Cut a covenant | 立约 | karat berit | High | Rebuilding and Covenant Renewal | 10 | Elevated weight beyond baseline’s Medium “covenant” note; costly unilateral community commitment, not a negotiated contract (avoid 合同/契约). |
| 50 | Separated (corporate covenant discipline) | 分别出来 / 分离 | vayibadlu (badal) | Critical | Separation from Syncretism | 10 | Distinct application from Romans’ “set apart” (ongoing devotional posture within ordinary life); here a one-time, historically situated corporate remedial action. Must not be used as a template for present-day ethnic/interfaith-marriage policy or to license separatism. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence. |
| 51 | Guilt offering | 赎罪祭 | asham | High | Confession and Corporate Repentance | 10 | Provisional, God-given atoning instrument anticipating fuller atonement in Christ; never present as merit-generating ritual technique (功德-adjacent) or as fully salvific in itself. |
Risk Summary
| Risk Tier | Count (New Terms) | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 7 | Human theologian (mandatory) |
| High | 19 | Human theologian (mandatory) |
| Medium | 20 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 6 | Automated review |
| Total new terms | 52 | — |
Terms requiring mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence (Critical + the book’s single highest-stakes pastoral-application item): 耶和华, 天上的神, 殿/圣殿 (High but flagged for its pervasiveness), 激动…的心, 慈爱, 奉献殿, 认罪, 圣洁的后裔, 分别出来.
This glossary, together with analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, is the complete Phase 1 Step 1 deliverable for the Ezra curriculum. It extends — and never contradicts — the mandarin Romans baseline translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, and doctrine_risk_registry.json. All 52 new terms above must be incorporated into an Ezra-specific translation memory extension before any Phase 2 segment translation begins.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: 神
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷
Inherited from Romans package. This package standardizes on 神 (CUV ‘Shen edition’) rather than 上帝, and forbids 天/老天爷 (impersonal Heaven) as substitutes. In Ezra, the pagan referent (Marduk and the Babylonian/Persian pantheon, e.g. 1:7’s ‘house of his gods’) must be rendered with a plural/lower framing (神明) and never with 殿/圣殿 language, preserving the narrative’s exclusive-monotheism contrast. Ezra also requires the companion proper name 耶和华 (see lord_yhwh) to remain lexically distinct from this generic noun.
Grace
Approved rendering: 恩典
Transliteration: ēndiǎn
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: 功德, 造化, 福气, 阴德
Inherited from Romans package. Thematically present throughout Ezra as the ground of restoration (decree, provision, protection, forgiveness); the contrast with 功德 (merit) is arguably more urgent here than in Romans, since the returnees’ entire history is framed as undeserved covenant mercy, not repayment for good behavior. See freewill_offering and steadfast_love_chesed below for closely related, doctrinally distinct terms.
Lord Yhwh
Approved rendering: 耶和华
Transliteration: YHWH
Doctrine: The Divine Name and the Title “God of Heaven”
Rejected alternatives: 天, 老天爷, 神 (单独使用,未与专名区分)
NEW. Established CUV transliteration. Must remain lexically distinct from 神 (generic Elohim/God) throughout Ezra: the book’s argument depends on readers seeing that Israel’s specific covenant God — not an anonymous deity or impersonal Heaven — directed Persian imperial policy (1:1, 1:5; cf. 6:22, 7:27). Pervasive across all ten chapters.
God Of Heaven
Approved rendering: 天上的神
Transliteration: Elohei HaShamayim (Heb.) / Elah Shemaya (Aram.)
Doctrine: The Divine Name and the Title “God of Heaven”
Rejected alternatives: 天 (单独使用), 天意
NEW. Highest-frequency collision risk in Ezra: repeatedly placed in the mouths of pagan Persian officials (Cyrus 1:2; Tattenai’s correspondents 5:11-12; Darius 6:9-10; Artaxerxes 7:12,21,23). Must retain 神 as the operative noun with 天上 as a locative modifier; never shorten to 天 alone, which would collapse the personal covenant God into the impersonal Heaven of Mandate-of-Heaven political theology.
Stirred Up The Heart
Approved rendering: 激动…的心
Transliteration: he’ir (ruach / lev)
Doctrine: Divine Stirring of a Pagan King’s Will
Rejected alternatives: 天命所归, 命运, 天命
NEW. Describes God’s direct, effectual sovereign action moving an unbelieving pagan king’s inner will (Cyrus 1:1, 1:5; cf. Darius 6:22; Artaxerxes 7:27). Highest risk of collapse into Mandate-of-Heaven (天命) political theology, in which an impersonal cosmic order simply endorses a fit ruler. Requires an explicit teaching note at every occurrence distinguishing personal, purposive divine action from impersonal cosmic ratification.
Steadfast Love Chesed
Approved rendering: 慈爱
Transliteration: chesed
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Covenant Love (Chesed) as the Ground of Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 慈悲 (佛教普世慈悲,与观音信仰相关)
NEW. God’s loyal, covenant-keeping love sustained over time (3:11 antiphonal refrain, ‘他是良善的,他向以色列人永远存慈爱’). Shares its first character 慈 with Buddhist 慈悲 (cíbēi), central to bodhisattva devotion, especially Guanyin worship. Every occurrence must be anchored to God’s specific covenant faithfulness to a particular people bound to him by promise — distinct from an undifferentiated cosmic compassion for all beings alike, and distinct from (though closely related to) 恩典 (unmerited gift) and 约 (covenant structure): chesed is grace sustained within covenant relationship over time.
Temple Dedication
Approved rendering: 奉献殿
Transliteration: chanukkah
Doctrine: Dedication of the Completed Temple
Rejected alternatives: 开光
NEW. The formal ceremony consecrating the completed temple to the LORD’s worship (6:16-18). NEVER use 开光 (kāiguāng), the Buddhist/Daoist ritual by which a monk or priest ritually ‘activates’ a statue or object with numinous spiritual power/consciousness — using it would imply the temple receives spiritual power through the ritual itself, exactly inverting the biblical point that the living God, who already exists and already reigns, is honored by a house built for him. Structurally identical in severity to the baseline’s forbidden 化身/下凡 under Incarnation.
Confession
Approved rendering: 认罪
Transliteration: vayitvadeh (yadah, hitpael)
Doctrine: Confession and Corporate Repentance
Rejected alternatives: 忏悔
NEW. Verbal, personal, corporate acknowledgment of specific covenant wrongdoing before God (9:5-15, 10:1-17); the anchor term for the doctrine. Distinguish absolutely from Buddhist ritual confession (忏悔), a karmic-merit-adjustment technique performed before a monk, image, or ritual assembly, and from the purely legal ‘plead guilty’ sense, which lacks the covenantal-relational, mercy-seeking dimension central to Ezra’s prayer.
Holy Seed
Approved rendering: 圣洁的后裔
Transliteration: zera qodesh
Doctrine: The “Holy Seed” and Covenant Fidelity
Rejected alternatives: 血统纯正说, 纯种血统意识形态
NEW. Israel’s covenant identity as a people consecrated exclusively to God, endangered by intermarriage-driven religious syncretism (9:2). The single most pastorally and theologically delicate term in the book: sits beside Chinese lineage-purity concepts (血统, 族谱) and modern ethnonationalist ‘pure bloodline’ ideology. MUST be taught explicitly as covenant religious fidelity — exclusive worship of the LORD without idolatrous syncretism — never ethnic or biological purity, informed by the book’s own internal correctives (netinim of ch. 2; Ruth’s Davidic inclusion; NT Jew-Gentile unity). Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Separated Corporate Discipline
Approved rendering: 分别出来 / 分离
Transliteration: vayibadlu (badal, niphal)
Doctrine: Separation from Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: 以此作为今日跨族/跨教婚姻政策或种族隔离的永久模板
NEW. Formal, deliberate corporate withdrawal from specific unlawful marriages, as covenant discipline (ch. 10). Shares its root concept with the baseline’s High-risk ‘separation unto God’s service’ doctrine (Romans 1:1, 12:1-2), but the application is opposite in character: Romans describes an ongoing devotional posture within ordinary life; Ezra 10 describes a one-time, historically situated corporate remedial action. Must NOT be presented as a timeless template for interfaith or interethnic marriage policy in the New Covenant era, nor used to license ethnic separatism. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, without exception.
High Risk Terms
Holy
Approved rendering: 圣洁
Transliteration: shèngjié
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: 清净, 圣人般的
Inherited from Romans package. In Ezra, applies to consecrated persons and vessels (e.g. 8:28, ‘归耶和华为圣’) and, in compound form, to the ‘holy seed’ concern of chapter 9 — see the separate holy_seed entry below for that compound’s distinct, elevated Critical risk. Do not conflate the simple consecration-formula usage here with the holy_seed compound’s ethnicity-adjacent risk.
Covenant
Approved rendering: 约
Transliteration: yuē
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: 合同, 契约
Inherited from Romans package. Ezra 10’s covenant-renewal act (see cut_a_covenant below) elevates this term’s practical review weight beyond the baseline’s general note, though the underlying rendering and the prohibition on commercial-contract vocabulary are unchanged.
Law
Approved rendering: 律法
Transliteration: lǜfǎ
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: 礼, 道德规范, 法律
Inherited from Romans package. In Ezra always specify the object (耶和华的律法 / 摩西的律法). Never equate with 礼 (Confucian ritual propriety) and never equate with 王的法令 (Persian civil law, see kings_decree_law below) — the two are categorically distinct sources of authority even though the Persian king lends Ezra’s mission civil enforcement power.
Sin
Approved rendering: 罪
Transliteration: zuì
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: 报应, 罪犯式的罪
Inherited from Romans package. Ezra’s confession vocabulary (chs. 9-10) also uses the more specific 罪愆/亏负 (ma’al, covenant unfaithfulness — see trespass_unfaithfulness below); keep the general 罪 and the specific 罪愆 distinct, and keep both away from impersonal bad-karma accumulation (报应).
Providence
Approved rendering: 神的护理
Transliteration: Shén de hùlǐ
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: 天意, 命运
Inherited from Romans package. Ezra intensifies the baseline’s risk note because providence here operates specifically through unbelieving foreign rulers (Cyrus, Darius, Artaxerxes), heightening the temptation to read it as impersonal 天意 rather than the LORD’s personal, purposive care for his covenant people. Underlies the recurring ‘hand of God’ idiom — see hand_of_god below.
Election
Approved rendering: 拣选
Transliteration: jiǎnxuǎn
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: 天命, 命运, 缘分
Inherited from Romans package. Available for cross-reference teaching linking God’s sovereign stirring of the exiles’ hearts (see stirred_up_the_heart below) to his personal, gracious choice of a people; not a direct lexical match in Ezra but a doctrinal parallel worth teaching alongside it.
Called
Approved rendering: 蒙召的
Transliteration: méngzhào de
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: 受命于天, 天命所归
Inherited from Romans package. Cross-referenced doctrinally in Ezra alongside stirred_up_the_heart to reinforce that God’s summons is personal and relational, never an impersonal cosmic mandate.
Calling
Approved rendering: 呼召
Transliteration: hūzhào
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: 天命, 命运
Inherited from Romans package. Cross-referenced doctrinally alongside election and stirred_up_the_heart in Ezra’s sovereignty-over-pagan-nations material.
Seed Of David
Approved rendering: 大卫的后裔
Transliteration: Dàwèi de hòuyì
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Where Sheshbazzar’s or Zerubbabel’s Davidic descent is discussed in Ezra 1-3, connect cautiously to this term with a note that this is genealogical continuity of hope, not a reconstituted throne — see prince_leader below.
Word Of The Lord
Approved rendering: 耶和华的话
Transliteration: devar-YHWH
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy (Jeremiah’s Word)
NEW. Must be tied explicitly to 预言 (fulfilled_prophecy below) so Cyrus’s decree (Ezra 1:1) reads as fulfillment of a specific, previously recorded oracle (Jeremiah’s seventy years), not generic religious sentiment or impersonal cosmic outcome.
Decree Proclamation
Approved rendering: 诏令 / 公告
Transliteration: qol (vaya’aver-qol, Heb.) / nishtevana (Aram.)
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty over Pagan Nations and History
NEW. The royal herald’s announcement / written correspondence by which God’s sovereign stirring becomes empire-wide public policy (1:1, 4:1-24, 5:1-17, 6:1-12, 7:11-26). 诏令 evokes the Chinese imperial-edict tradition (皇帝诏书), a helpful register match that nonetheless risks flattening the event into ordinary court politics; anchor every occurrence to providence and fulfillment-of-prophecy via teaching note.
Temple House
Approved rendering: 殿 / 圣殿
Transliteration: bayit
Doctrine: Restoration of Temple Worship
Rejected alternatives: 庙, 寺, 道观
NEW. The Jerusalem temple, the LORD’s exclusive dwelling-place. Never 庙 (folk temple), 寺 (Buddhist temple), or 道观 (Daoist temple) — the same forbidden set the baseline fixes for 教会 (church), now applied to an actual physical building with an altar and priesthood. Pervasive across chs. 1-8; early occurrences require a clarifying note: one house, for the one true God, containing no idol image.
Go Up Return
Approved rendering: 归回 / 上到…去
Transliteration: alah
Doctrine: Rebuilding as the Community’s Covenantal Response
NEW. The fixed technical term for pilgrimage/return to Jerusalem (1:3, 1:5, 1:11, 2:1, 7:6, 7:9, 8:1). Hebrew plays on overlap with שׁוּב (‘turn/return,’ used for repentance); Mandarin cannot lexically unify both senses, so teaching must connect 归回 (physical return) to 悔改/归向神 (repentance) so the theological resonance carried into chs. 9-10 is not lost.
Remnant Survivor
Approved rendering: 余民 / 剩下的人
Transliteration: nish’ar (individual) / she’erit (collective)
Doctrine: Remnant Theology
Rejected alternatives: 报应式幸存 (视存活为侥幸而非神恩)
NEW. A person or group preserved through God’s judgment (1:4; 9:8, 9:13-15), a living token of his preserving mercy. Must be taught as God’s gracious preservation, never as fortunate escape from impersonal bad fortune (报应-adjacent folk reading) or a purely martial ‘survivor’ framing.
Temple Vessels
Approved rendering: 器皿
Transliteration: kelei veit-YHWH
Doctrine: Consecration and Exclusive Use of Temple Vessels
Rejected alternatives: 多神庙宇的祭器(香炉、祭盘等泛用器具)
NEW. The consecrated ritual furnishings of temple worship (1:7-11, 5:14-15, 6:5, 8:24-30). Distinguish from generic multi-deity ritual paraphernalia in Chinese folk-temple practice; these vessels are consecrated exclusively to the one true God’s worship and carry no independent numinous power of their own — instruments, not objects of veneration.
Exiles
Approved rendering: 被掳之人 / 流亡者
Transliteration: ha-golah
Doctrine: Remnant Theology
Rejected alternatives: 报应式的不幸移民
NEW. The exile/returnee community (1:11, 2:1, 6:16-21, 8:35, 9:4, 10:6-8), defined by having been under God’s covenant judgment and now under his restoring mercy (cf. Deut. 28). Must not be read as mere political displacement or impersonal bad-fortune (报应-adjacent).
Genealogical Registration
Approved rendering: 家谱 / 宗谱
Transliteration: hityachsu / sefer ha-hityachess
Doctrine: Genealogical Qualification for Sacred Service
NEW. Formal documentary proof of clan/priestly descent (2:59-63). Sits directly beside Chinese ancestor-lineage genealogy books (族谱), which support ancestor veneration; must be taught as covenant qualification for consecrated service verified through God-ordained descent lines (cf. Numbers 3), not veneration or ritual appeasement of ancestors.
Excluded From Priesthood
Approved rendering: 视为不洁而从祭司职任中革除
Transliteration: vaygo’alu min-hakehunah (ga’al II)
Doctrine: Genealogical Qualification for Sacred Service
NEW. Formal disqualification from priestly service due to unproven/defiled genealogical claim (2:62). LEXICAL TRAP: the Hebrew root (ga’al II, ‘defile/disqualify’) is homographic with, but semantically opposite to, the far more common ga’al I (‘redeem,’ behind ‘Redeemer’/救赎主). A translator using a concordance could mistakenly import redemption language; the correct sense is disqualification, not redemption.
Altar
Approved rendering: 祭坛
Transliteration: mizbeach
Doctrine: The Altar and Renewed Sacrificial Worship
Rejected alternatives: 家中神坛, 祖先牌位/祭坛
NEW. The sacrificial altar, rebuilt before the temple building itself (3:1-6, 6:9-10, 8:35). Distinguish carefully from household or ancestral shrine altars common in Chinese folk and ancestor-veneration practice; exclusive to the one true God’s covenant sacrificial system under the Law of Moses, not one of several household or lineage altars serving multiple spiritual powers.
Scribe
Approved rendering: 文士
Transliteration: sofer
Doctrine: Ezra’s Scribal Devotion to the Torah
Rejected alternatives: 士大夫
NEW. A trained expert in copying, teaching, and applying the Torah (7:6, 7:11). Risk of collision with the Confucian scholar-official ideal, whose authority derives from mastery of a humanly-authored classical canon (经). Ezra’s authority derives from personal devotion to God’s own revealed, verbally inspired Law — though he also holds a real Persian civil commission (7:25-26) that must not be flattened into either a purely scholar-official or purely bureaucratic reading.
Hand Of God
Approved rendering: 神施恩的手 / 耶和华的手
Transliteration: yad-YHWH Elohav hatovah
Doctrine: Providence Expressed as “the Hand of God”
Rejected alternatives: 天意
NEW. Idiom for God’s favorable, providential, empowering presence (7:6, 7:9, 7:28, 8:18, 8:22, 8:31). Must connect explicitly to providence (神的护理) rather than being translated as a bare literal body part, and must not drift toward the impersonal fatalistic 天意 already forbidden under the baseline’s Providence entry.
Fast
Approved rendering: 禁食
Transliteration: tzom
Doctrine: Corporate Fasting and Humility Before God
Rejected alternatives: 斋戒
NEW. Abstention from food expressing dependence and urgent petition before the journey to Jerusalem (8:21-23). Distinguish sharply from Buddhist/Daoist ascetic fasting practices (斋戒) undertaken as a merit-generating or purity-attaining spiritual technique; biblical fasting is relational — dependence on a personal God who is asked, and who chooses, to answer.
Humbled Themselves
Approved rendering: 自卑 / 刻苦己心
Transliteration: hit’anot
Doctrine: Corporate Fasting and Humility Before God
Rejected alternatives: 修苦行
NEW. Voluntary self-humbling before God, paired with fasting (8:21). Avoid connotations of ascetic self-mortification practiced as merit-earning spiritual discipline (修苦行); this is covenant humility before a personal God who responds relationally, not a self-generating technique of spiritual attainment.
Trespass Unfaithfulness
Approved rendering: 罪愆 / 亏负
Transliteration: ma’al
Doctrine: Confession and Corporate Repentance
Rejected alternatives: 报应
NEW. Serious covenant betrayal, particularly against God, distinct from a minor lapse (ch. 9). Reinforces the baseline’s ‘sin’ entry note: moral/covenantal offense against a personal God, not mere legal infraction or impersonal bad-karma accumulation.
Intermingled With Peoples Of Lands
Approved rendering: 与列邦民族通婚混杂
Transliteration: hit’arvu b’amei ha’aratzot
Doctrine: Separation from Syncretism
NEW. Marriage and religious assimilation with idol-worshiping neighboring populations, the specific covenant violation confessed in chs. 9-10. Valence shift from baseline’s neutral/positive 外邦人 (Romans mission context, ‘no distinction’); must not be read as license for ethnic exclusion or bleed backward into a general anti-Gentile posture elsewhere in the curriculum. The concern is idolatry/syncretism at a specific redemptive-historical moment, not a timeless policy of racial or national separation.
Cut A Covenant
Approved rendering: 立约
Transliteration: karat berit
Doctrine: Covenant Renewal (Ezra 10)
Rejected alternatives: 合同, 契约
NEW. Formal establishment of a binding covenant commitment (10:3): the community’s commitment to put away illicit marriages and obey the Law. Elevated above the baseline’s general Medium ‘covenant’ risk. Must not be rendered with commercial-contract vocabulary implying a negotiated arrangement between equal parties; this is a costly, unilateral community commitment made before God.
Guilt Offering
Approved rendering: 赎罪祭
Transliteration: asham
Doctrine: The Guilt Offering as Provisional Atonement
Rejected alternatives: 功德
NEW. A sacrifice presented in concrete response to acknowledged wrongdoing, backing verbal confession (10:19). Connects to broader atonement doctrine, which the baseline system prompt already requires be flagged for mandatory theologian review. Present as a provisional, God-given covenant instrument anticipating the fuller, final atonement accomplished in Christ, never as fully salvific in itself or as a merit-generating ritual technique paralleling 功德.
Medium Risk Terms
Glory
Approved rendering: 荣耀
Transliteration: róngyào
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 面子, 光宗耀祖
Inherited from Romans package. Available for use in Ezra’s temple-dedication/worship contexts if the source text employs it; no occurrence in the analyzed chapters required a new coinage.
David
Approved rendering: 大卫
Transliteration: Dàwèi
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. In Ezra, Davidic-line continuity is quietly present in the return’s leadership (Sheshbazzar, ch. 1) and the foundation ceremony (ch. 3); do not overclaim a restored monarchy.
Israel
Approved rendering: 以色列
Transliteration: Yǐsèliè
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Inherited from Romans package. No valence shift; consistently the covenant people’s name across all ten chapters of Ezra.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: 外邦人
Transliteration: wàibāngrén
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: 夷人, 外国人
Inherited from Romans package. VALENCE SHIFT IN EZRA 9-10: there the referent is specifically idol-worshiping neighboring populations whose religious syncretism threatens covenant fidelity, not a neutral-to-positive gospel-mission object as in Romans. Do not let this negative Ezra usage bleed backward into a general anti-Gentile reading elsewhere in the curriculum. See intermingled_with_peoples_of_lands below for the Ezra-specific compound.
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: 神的国
Transliteration: Shén de guó
Doctrine: Kingdom Mission
Rejected alternatives: 天下, 王朝
Inherited from Romans package. Must never be conflated with Ezra’s secular kingdom_persian (国/国度), Cyrus’s earthly empire, which is explicitly subordinate to and instrumental within the LORD’s sovereign purpose rather than being itself the object of this doctrine.
Church
Approved rendering: 教会
Transliteration: jiàohuì
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: 庙, 寺, 道观
Inherited from Romans package. Ezra’s pre-Christian covenant congregation is rendered assembly_congregation (会众), not 教会; do not substitute one for the other. The forbidden set 庙/寺/道观 is extended in Ezra to the actual physical Jerusalem temple — see temple_house below.
Fulfilled Prophecy
Approved rendering: 应验
Transliteration: likhlot
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy (Jeremiah’s Word)
NEW. Standard CUV term; low lexical collision risk in isolation, but every occurrence should reinforce linear, one-time fulfillment, resisting the cyclical order-chaos-order pattern (治乱循环) of classical Chinese historiography that Mandarin readers may intuitively supply onto a long historical narrative like Ezra.
Human Spirit Or Heart
Approved rendering: 心 / 灵
Transliteration: ruach / lev
Doctrine: Divine Stirring of a Pagan King’s Will
Rejected alternatives: 圣灵 (误用于人的灵/心)
NEW. The human spirit/will/inner disposition acted upon by God’s sovereign stirring; must never be confused with 圣灵 (baseline Holy Spirit, Critical) — this is the object being moved, not the third Person of the Trinity indwelling a believer.
Kingdom Persian
Approved rendering: 国 / 国度
Transliteration: malkhut
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty over Pagan Nations and History
Rejected alternatives: 神的国 (专用于Kingdom of God)
NEW. Cyrus’s earthly, secular imperial dominion (1:1, 4:1-24, 6:1-2, 7:1). Must not be conflated with the baseline’s 神的国 (kingdom_of_god); Persia’s malkhut is explicitly subordinate to, and instrumental within, the LORD’s sovereign purpose.
Rebuild
Approved rendering: 重建
Transliteration: banah
Doctrine: Rebuilding as the Community’s Covenantal Response
Rejected alternatives: 复兴
NEW. The central verb of the book’s first half (1:3-5, 3:2-3, 3:10-11, 4:1-24, 5:1-17, 6:1-15). Distinguish from 复兴 (revival), which in contemporary Chinese Christian usage connotes a subjective spiritual-renewal meeting rather than the concrete, physical, historical act of reconstructing the temple building.
Freewill Offering
Approved rendering: 甘心祭
Transliteration: nedavah
Doctrine: Freewill Giving for the LORD’s House
Rejected alternatives: 功德
NEW. A voluntary gift given beyond what is required, motivated by devotion rather than obligation (1:4, 1:6, 2:68-69). Must not read as merit-generating (功德-adjacent, already forbidden under the baseline’s Grace entry) or as discharging a social debt; structurally parallel to grace received, not earned.
Priests
Approved rendering: 祭司
Transliteration: kohanim
Doctrine: Priesthood and Levitical Service
Rejected alternatives: 道士, 和尚, 僧人
NEW. The Aaronic/Levitical office set apart for temple service (1:5, 2:36-58, 3:8-10, 6:18, 8:15-20). Biblical priesthood mediates access to the one true God through a divinely instituted, hereditary, lineage-documented office, not a self-cultivated or merit-attained status.
Prince Leader
Approved rendering: 首领
Transliteration: nasi
Doctrine: Rebuilding as the Community’s Covenantal Response
Rejected alternatives: 王, 君王 (暗示已恢复君主制)
NEW. Sheshbazzar’s title (1:8), signaling continuing Davidic-line involvement without a restored monarchy. Where Davidic descent is relevant, connect cautiously to seed_of_david with a note that this is genealogical continuity of hope, not a reconstituted throne.
Burnt Offering
Approved rendering: 燔祭
Transliteration: olah
Doctrine: The Altar and Renewed Sacrificial Worship
Rejected alternatives: 烧香祭祖
NEW. The whole-burnt sacrifice, wholly consumed (3:1-6, 6:9-10, 8:35). Distinguish from ancestor-offering incense/food practices addressed to deceased ancestors rather than to the one covenant God under his own revealed instructions.
Foundation
Approved rendering: 根基
Transliteration: yesod
Doctrine: Rebuilding as the Community’s Covenantal Response
NEW. The temple’s architectural foundation, whose laying was itself an occasion for corporate worship (3:10-11). Preserve the metaphorical resonance (a stable, covenantal beginning) without over-importing unrelated NT ‘foundation’ texts unless explicitly cross-referenced.
Adversary Opposition
Approved rendering: 敌意 / 阻挠
Transliteration: sitnah
Doctrine: Opposition to the Rebuilding of God’s House
NEW. Active hostility and obstruction raised against the rebuilding (4:1-24, 5:3-17). Shares a Hebrew root with שָׂטָן (Satan/adversary); note the connection for teachers without over-identifying every human political opponent in Ezra 4 as demonically controlled — the text presents real, this-worldly ethnic/political rivalry within a larger opposition pattern.
Passover Feast
Approved rendering: 逾越节
Transliteration: Pesach
Doctrine: Passover Celebrated After Temple Restoration
NEW. The spring exodus-deliverance festival, celebrated immediately after the temple’s dedication (6:19-22). Present on its own historical-liturgical terms; do not over-import NT Passover typology unless explicitly cross-referenced.
Ritual Purification
Approved rendering: 洁净
Transliteration: taharu
Doctrine: Passover Celebrated After Temple Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 清净
NEW. Ceremonial cleansing preparatory to sacred service (6:19-22). Distinguish from Daoist ritual/meditative purity or stillness (清净, already forbidden under the baseline’s ‘holy’ entry); biblical purification is preparatory and instrumental, not a state of spiritual attainment achieved in itself.
Kings Decree Law
Approved rendering: 王的法令
Transliteration: data di-malka (Aram.)
Doctrine: Ezra’s Scribal Devotion to the Torah
NEW. Persian royal/imperial law, distinct in kind and source from divine Torah (7:12-26). Must remain lexically distinct from 律法 at every occurrence, so Persian civil law is never rhetorically or visually equated with God’s revealed Law, even though it lends Ezra’s mission civil enforcement power.
Set Heart To Study
Approved rendering: 定志考究 / 立志寻求律法
Transliteration: hekhin levavo lidrosh (darash)
Doctrine: The Role of Scripture in Community Renewal
Rejected alternatives: 读经典 (为自我修养与社会晋升而研读经典)
NEW. Ezra’s devoted, disciplined inquiry into and application of the Torah (7:10). Distinguish from the Confucian ideal of classical-text scholarship pursued for moral self-cultivation and social advancement; Ezra’s darash is receptive study of God’s own revealed word in order to obey and teach obedience.
Statutes And Rules
Approved rendering: 律例典章
Transliteration: chukkim umishpatim
Doctrine: The Role of Scripture in Community Renewal
NEW. The specific commanded content of the Torah, cultic and civil (7:10, 7:25). Standard CUV compound paired with 律法; reinforces that Torah has concrete legal-covenantal content, not merely devotional sentiment.
Abomination
Approved rendering: 可憎的事
Transliteration: to’evah
Doctrine: Separation from Syncretism
Rejected alternatives: 讨厌的事, 令人厌烦的事
NEW. Strong term for practices, especially idolatry, that provoke God’s moral revulsion (9:1, 9:11, 9:14). Maintain formal CUV register; avoid casual synonyms that would lose the moral-religious gravity of the term.
Ashamed Shame
Approved rendering: 蒙羞 / 羞愧
Transliteration: bosh / kalam
Doctrine: Confession and Corporate Repentance
Rejected alternatives: 面子, 丢脸 (作为唯一诠释角度)
NEW. Deep, appropriate shame before God over covenant unfaithfulness, modeled by Ezra (9:6). Overlaps with Chinese culture’s rich horizontal social-shame vocabulary (面子, 丢脸); Ezra’s shame is oriented vertically toward God, even though felt within a real community — a pastoral bridge, not a substitute for the vertical dimension.
Assembly Congregation
Approved rendering: 会众
Transliteration: qahal
Doctrine: Covenant Renewal (Ezra 10)
Rejected alternatives: 教会 (新约用语,此处误用)
NEW. The gathered covenant community, formally mustered — used for the returnee register (ch. 2) and the corporate-repentance gathering (ch. 10). Distinct from the NT-era 教会 (church); names the pre-Christian covenant congregation gathered at a specific place and moment. Do not substitute one term for the other.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: 先知
Transliteration: xiānzhī
Doctrine: Inspiration of Scripture
Rejected alternatives: 算命先生
Inherited from Romans package. In Ezra: Jeremiah (1:1) and Haggai/Zechariah (5:1-2), whose ministry re-energizes the stalled rebuilding — functions here as a catalyst for obedient action alongside the written Torah emphasized in ch. 7.
Thanksgiving
Approved rendering: 感恩
Transliteration: gǎn’ēn
Doctrine: Thanksgiving
Inherited from Romans package. Pairs with the 慈爱 (chesed) antiphonal refrain at the Ezra 3:11 foundation-laying ceremony.
Levites
Approved rendering: 利未人
Transliteration: Leviyim
Doctrine: Priesthood and Levitical Service
NEW. Established transliteration/proper-tribal-name pattern; minimal collision risk (1:5, 2:36-58, 3:8-10, 6:18, 8:15-20).
Treasurer
Approved rendering: 库官
Transliteration: gizbar
Doctrine: Historical Documentary Authentication of God’s Acts
NEW. A Persian court financial officer (1:8); minor administrative detail testifying to the historically documented character of the restoration.
Temple Servants
Approved rendering: 尼提宁 (圣殿仆役)
Transliteration: netinim
Doctrine: Restoration of Temple Worship
NEW. A class of non-Israelite-descended temple support workers (2:43-58, 8:20). Transliteration plus descriptive gloss; positive early counter-example to the exclusionary crisis of chs. 9-10 — proper incorporation of the foreigner into covenant service is not the problem; unauthorized religious syncretism is.
Feast Of Booths
Approved rendering: 住棚节
Transliteration: Chag HaSukkot
Doctrine: Restoration of Temple Worship
NEW. The autumn pilgrimage festival resumed as part of the restored liturgical calendar (3:4). Primary risk is reader unfamiliarity with the OT festal calendar, not syncretistic collision; supply brief explanatory context.
Official Letter
Approved rendering: 奏文 / 官方文书
Transliteration: nishtevana (Aram.)
Doctrine: Historical Documentary Authentication of God’s Acts
NEW. Formal Persian chancery correspondence quoted verbatim (4:6-23, 5:3-17). Primarily a genre marker requiring formal bureaucratic Mandarin register; low doctrinal risk.
Province
Approved rendering: 省
Transliteration: medinah
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty over Pagan Nations and History
NEW. A Persian imperial administrative district (4:1-24); frames the restoration as happening under, not against, pagan imperial sovereignty.
Record Memorandum
Approved rendering: 档案 / 记录
Transliteration: dikhronah (Aram.)
Doctrine: Historical Documentary Authentication of God’s Acts
NEW. An official archival record verifying Cyrus’s original decree (5:17, 6:1-2); reinforces the historical, documented character of the narrative.
