Linguistic Gap Analysis

06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Ephesians (English → Mandarin)

Purpose

This analysis identifies where standard Mandarin theological vocabulary is adequate, where it is missing, and where it is dangerously crowded by competing meanings from Confucian ethics, Buddhist soteriology, Daoist metaphysics, and Chinese folk religion. It builds directly on 08_core_glossary.md and assets/bible_term_registry.json, and inherits every baseline decision from the Romans translation_memory.json without modification. Its purpose is to give Phase 2 translators (and the human theologians who review Critical/High segments) a compact map of where the language will fight the theology in Ephesians specifically, and what strategy resolves each fight.

This document does not introduce new term renderings; where a rendering is needed it defers to the Section A/B terms already fixed in 08_core_glossary.md. Its job is diagnostic and strategic, not lexicographic.

1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

For each of the nine curriculum doctrines: the available Mandarin terms, their specific weaknesses in this destination culture, and the recommended handling strategy for Phase 2.

1.1 Salvation by Grace through Faith

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
恩典 (grace), 信心 (faith), 救恩/得救 (salvation), 所赐的 (gift), 行为 (works), 善行 (good works)恩典 sits directly across the merit-ledger line from 功德 (accumulated Buddhist merit) and 积善 (the folk-moral “accumulating goodness” that is believed to produce good fortune or a better rebirth). 善行 in 2:10 is the single highest-collision term in the whole letter: the stock four-character proverb “积善之家必有余庆” (“a family that accumulates good deeds will have surplus blessing”) encodes exactly the causal direction Ephesians 2:8–10 forbids (works → salvation) rather than the one it teaches (salvation → works).Never allow 善行/恩典/所赐的 to appear in 2:8–10 without an explicit causal-direction gloss: grace produces good works; good works never produce, earn, or secure grace. Treat 2:8–10 as the anchor passage for this doctrine across the whole curriculum (per baseline consistency rule for Romans 1:16–17 and Romans 8:28); render it identically wherever it recurs in teaching materials. Mandatory theologian review on every occurrence of 恩典/所赐的/行为/善行 within 2:1–10.

1.2 Election and Predestination in Christ

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
拣选 (election), 预定 (predestined), 定意 (purpose), 预备 (prepared beforehand)预定 risks assimilation to 命中注定 (colloquial fatalism — “it was fated”) and to 天命所归 (the classical political-legitimacy phrase for an impersonally mandated ruler). Both readings strip away the personal, relational, Christ-centered ground Paul supplies.Every occurrence of 预定/拣选 in Ephesians 1 must retain the anchoring phrase 在基督里 (“in Christ”) in the same sentence or clause wherever the source text supplies it (1:4-5, 1:11) — do not let the prepositional phrase drop in translation for stylistic smoothness. This textually forces the personal/relational reading and pre-empts the fatalism misreading before a footnote is even needed.

1.3 The Church as the Body of Christ

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
教会 (church), 身体 (body), 元首/头 (head), 充满/丰满 (fullness)身体 alone reads as a social-organizational metaphor (a guild, a clan, a “body” in the English corporate sense) unless anchored to 在基督里. 元首/头 collides with 三纲 (the Confucian Three Cardinal Guides) unless paired with the self-sacrificial qualifier from 5:25. 充满/丰满 risks assimilation to Daoist/Buddhist fullness-emptiness metaphysics (虚/满) if presented abstractly rather than relationally.Require that 身体 and 元首/头 never appear in isolated doctrinal statements without a co-occurring reference to Christ’s self-giving love (5:25) or organic union (在基督里). This is a structural pairing rule, not just a footnote rule — the two ideas (headship and self-sacrifice) must be textually adjacent wherever the doctrine is taught outside of a direct verse quotation.

1.4 Unity of Jews and Gentiles in One New Humanity

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
外邦人 (Gentiles), 新人 (new man/humanity), 和好 (reconcile), 隔断的墙 (dividing wall), 仇恨 (hostility)No major lexical collision, but 新人 risks being read as “a reformed/improved version of the old self” (i.e., moral self-improvement) rather than a genuinely new third category created ex nihilo from two previously hostile groups. 和好 risks collapse into 礼-based social harmonization (restoring proper etiquette) rather than atonement-based reconciliation.Distinguish explicitly, every time 新人 occurs, whether the corporate sense (2:15, Jew+Gentile → one new humanity) or the individual sense (4:24, old self → new self) is active — these are two distinct referents sharing one Mandarin term and must not be silently merged in teaching prose. For 和好, always anchor to “基督的血” or “十字架” (the cross) in the same sentence to block the etiquette-restoration reading.

1.5 The Mystery of Christ Revealed

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
奥秘 (mystery), 启示 (revelation), 智慧 (wisdom)奥秘 is the single highest structural-ambiguity risk in this doctrine: Mandarin has no neutral word for “a hidden truth now publicly disclosed to everyone” — every available candidate (奥秘, 玄机, 秘传) carries some flavor of esoteric, initiate-only, or fortune-telling secrecy from Daoist inner alchemy or geomancy. 启示 risks conflation with 通灵 (mediumistic channeling) if presented as a private mystical experience rather than apostolic/scriptural proclamation.Pair 奥秘 with an explicit “now revealed to all” clause (显明/已经显现给…众人) at first occurrence in any teaching unit, rather than relying on 奥秘 alone to carry the “no-longer-hidden” sense — Mandarin readers’ default associative field for 奥秘-class vocabulary is ongoing concealment, so the “now disclosed” half of the doctrine must be stated, not assumed.

1.6 Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
魔鬼 (devil), 管辖这黑暗世界的 (cosmic powers), 执政的、掌权的、有能的、主治的 (rulers/authorities), 全副军装 (armor), 争战 (struggle)This doctrine sits in the most crowded semantic neighborhood in the entire curriculum: Chinese folk cosmology is densely populated with named, ranked, territorially-assigned spiritual beings (城隍, 土地公, 玉皇大帝’s celestial bureaucracy) who are objects of respect and appeasement, not resistance. Ephesians’ vocabulary of “rulers/authorities/powers” could default-read as this same category unless the doctrine of their illegitimacy and defeat is stated explicitly. 魔鬼 also risks flattening into the vast diffuse category of folk 鬼 (ghosts, including 饿鬼 “hungry ghosts”) rather than naming one singular personal adversary.Every occurrence of the powers-vocabulary (1:21, 3:10, 6:12) must be taught with the explicit disposition-word pair “抵挡” (resist) / “已被基督制伏” (already subjected to Christ) rather than any appeasement-register vocabulary (敬拜, 供奉, 安抚) — this is the single clearest lexical fence available and must never be crossed even in paraphrase or illustrative material.

1.7 Household Codes and Christ-Centered Relationships

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
顺服 (submit), 元首/头 (head), 孝敬父母 (honor parents), 主的教养 (discipline/instruction), 仆人/肉身的主人 (bondservant/master)顺服 is the most politically and pastorally sensitive term in the letter given contemporary gender-equality discourse layered on top of the pre-existing Confucian 三纲 hierarchy (夫为妻纲: “the husband is the guiding cord of the wife”). Unlike 三纲, Ephesians opens the household code with mutual submission (5:21) before addressing wives — a structural feature easily lost if 5:21 and 5:22 are taught as separate, unrelated units. 孝敬父母 is unusually a positive resonance risk: near-total overlap with 孝 could cause “in the Lord” (6:1) to be silently dropped as redundant, erasing the distinctively Christ-centered motivation.Never teach 5:22-24 (wife’s submission) as a stand-alone unit separated from 5:21 (mutual submission) and 5:25 (husband’s self-sacrificial love) — these three verses must be treated as a single indivisible teaching unit in every derived lesson, table of contents, or summary heading. For 孝敬父母, retain “在主里” (in the Lord) as a non-optional clause in every paraphrase, since its omission is the likeliest point of silent doctrinal drift toward autonomous Confucian filial duty.

1.8 Gifts for Building Up the Church

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
属灵恩赐 (spiritual gifts, baseline), 使徒/先知/传福音的/牧师/教师 (fivefold offices), 装备 (equipping), 被圣灵充满 (filled with the Spirit)属灵恩赐 already fences off 神通/法力 per the baseline; the added Ephesians-specific risk is 被圣灵充满 (5:18), which could be assimilated to 被神明附身 (deity-possession trance phenomena common in Chinese folk religious practice, e.g. spirit-mediums at temple festivals).Every occurrence of 被圣灵充满 must be taught alongside its stated behavioral fruit — sober speech, singing, thanksgiving, submission (5:19-21) — as the positive identifying marker distinguishing it from trance/ecstatic possession, rather than relying on a single abstract doctrinal footnote.

1.9 Walking in Newness of Life

Available Mandarin TermsWeaknessesRecommended Strategy
行 (walk), 旧人/新人 (old self/new self), 更新 (renewed), 脱去/穿上 (put off/put on)更新 and 旧人→新人 as a change process are structurally vulnerable to assimilation with Neo-Confucian self-cultivation (修身, gradual moral refinement through personal discipline) and with Buddhist/Daoist mind-cultivation technique (修心, 打坐). The clothing metaphor 脱去/穿上 could be read as describing an external behavior change achievable by will-power alone, detached from its Spirit-wrought inward cause.Maintain the sequence-integrity of 4:22-24 as a single unit in all derived material: (1) decisive putting-off at conversion, (2) ongoing Spirit-wrought inward renewal, (3) resulting putting-on — never present step (3) as achievable without explicitly naming step (2) as the Spirit’s, not the believer’s own effort’s, work.

2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods

2.1 Missing Vocabulary (no adequate existing Mandarin term; compound/paraphrase required)

These concepts have no single existing Mandarin word that carries the required sense without either (a) importing a competing worldview or (b) being too vague to carry doctrinal weight. Section B of 08_core_glossary.md already proposes compound renderings for each; this section explains why a single word was rejected in each case.

ConceptWhy No Single Word SufficesCompound Solution Adopted
Predestination (προορίζω)天命 carries imperial-mandate baggage; 命运/缘分 carry impersonal-fate/folk-Buddhist baggage; no neutral single character exists for “personally, relationally pre-chosen in Christ.”预定, always anchored to 在基督里
Redemption (ἀπολύτρωσις)A single character (赎, 救, 脱) each captures only part of the sense (ransom-price, rescue, or release) and 脱 alone drifts toward 解脱 (Buddhist liberation).救赎 (compound retained from baseline), filled with “Christ’s blood” content every occurrence
The dividing wall / new humanity complex (2:14-15)No Mandarin idiom exists for “a legal/ritual barrier between two ethnic-religious groups abolished by a third party’s death,” since the Hua-Yi (华夷) insider/outsider paradigm this most resembles is precisely the wrong analogy (a hierarchy, not a removed wall between equals).隔断的墙 + 新人, taught as a paired image requiring background explanation, not idiom-matching
Sealed / guarantee (σφραγίζω / ἀρραβών)符 (talisman) is the nearest single-word folk-religious analog but imports magical-protection connotations exactly opposite to a relational ownership-mark; no secular single word carries “divine ownership + future guarantee” together.印记 + 凭据, taught as a paired commercial/covenantal image (mark of ownership; down payment guaranteeing full payment)
Household-code mutual submission (5:21 ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις)Mandarin has abundant vocabulary for hierarchical submission (顺服, 服从) but no established single term for mutual, reciprocal submission between unequal social roles — this configuration does not exist as a named concept in either Confucian or contemporary secular Chinese social ethics.彼此顺服 (mutual submission), explicitly built by combining 彼此 (mutual/each other) + 顺服, introduced as a structural frame preceding the role-specific instructions

2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Needing Fencing

These concepts have too many existing Mandarin candidates, each borrowed from a rival worldview, such that the correct term must be actively fenced off from its neighbors on every occurrence rather than simply chosen once.

Semantic FieldCompeting OccupantsDoctrinal Term Requiring the FenceFencing Strategy
Merit / earned favor功德, 阴德, 积善, 善行 (as folk-moral category)恩典, 善行 (as Ephesians 2:10 doctrinal category)Never let 善行 stand without a stated causal direction (grace → works). Never let 恩典 co-occur with any of the four folk-merit terms without an explicit contrast clause.
Hidden/esoteric truth玄机, 秘传, 天机奥秘Pair with “已经显明/启示给众圣徒” (now revealed to all the saints) at first occurrence per unit.
Spirit-beings requiring ritual response城隍, 土地公, 玉皇大帝’s bureaucracy, 祖灵, 鬼/饿鬼执政的、掌权的、有能的、主治的; 魔鬼; 管辖这黑暗世界的Reserve resistance-register vocabulary (抵挡, 争战, 得胜) exclusively for these terms; never use appeasement-register vocabulary (敬拜, 供奉, 安抚, 请安) in the same clause.
Hierarchical social submission/authority三纲 (夫为妻纲/父为子纲/君为臣纲), 孝, 关系-based favoritism顺服, 元首/头, 孝敬父母, 偏待人 (partiality)Every hierarchical term must be textually bounded by its reciprocal/limiting counterpart already present in the source text (5:21 before 5:22; 5:25 alongside 5:23; “in the Lord” alongside 孝敬父母; 6:9’s divine impartiality alongside 偏待人).
Ritual purification / possession洁净仪式, 被神明附身, 通灵, 护身符洗礼, 被圣灵充满, 启示, 全副军装Each Christian term must be accompanied by its distinguishing positive marker (covenant entry for baptism; sober Spirit-fruit for filling; apostolic/scriptural channel for revelation; faith-appropriation for armor) rather than relying on the term alone to self-differentiate.
Immortal/celestial rank attained by cultivation成仙, 仙班, 修成正果一同坐 (seated together, 2:6), 基业 (inheritance)Explicit “by grace, in Christ” anchor every time either doctrinal term is used to describe believers’ heavenly status; never let heavenly status appear as an achievement claim.
Fate / impersonal cosmic assignment天命, 命运, 缘分, 天意, 命中注定拣选, 预定, 呼召, 定意, 预备 (all Election/Calling family terms)All five terms in this doctrinal family must retain “在基督里” or an equivalent Christ-anchoring phrase in the same clause; this is the single load-bearing fence for the entire Election/Predestination doctrine.

3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

Term/ConceptDecisionRationale
Jesus, Christ, David, Paul, etc. (proper names)Transliteration (established CUV forms: 耶稣, 基督, 大卫, 保罗)Reuse baseline exactly; proper names carry no independent semantic risk once transliterated, per baseline convention.
Amen, HallelujahTransliteration (阿们, 哈利路亚)Baseline convention; liturgical proper transliterations, not concepts requiring semantic mapping.
Abba (Ἀββά, Romans 8:15 — referenced for consistency; not itself in Ephesians but relevant to the Father/adoption doctrine shared with Ephesians 1:5)Transliteration retained alongside 父 (阿爸父)Preserves the filial intimacy that a purely formal 父 alone under-communicates; already fixed in baseline.
Mystery (μυστήριον)Paraphrase/compound (奥秘 + explanatory clause), not transliterationNo transliterated form exists in Chinese Bible tradition for this Greek term; paraphrase with mandatory disclosure-clause is the only viable path (see §2.2).
Armor-piece names (belt, breastplate, shield, helmet, sword — 6:14-17)Paraphrase using existing military/everyday vocabulary (带子, 护心镜, 藤牌, 头盔, 宝剑) combined with the already-fixed doctrinal noun (真理, 公义, 平安福音, 信心, 救恩, 神的道)These are concrete physical objects with ready Mandarin equivalents; transliteration is inapplicable. The doctrinal risk lives entirely in the paired abstract noun (e.g., 义/righteousness), not in the armor-piece noun itself — so translators must not spend review effort on the armor vocabulary and must concentrate it on the paired doctrinal noun.
Rulers/authorities/powers/dominions (ἀρχή/ἐξουσία/δύναμις/κυριότης, 1:21)Paraphrase using existing CUV four-term formula (执政的、掌权的、有能的、主治的)Established Chinese Bible tradition formula; transliterating the Greek terms would be unintelligible and would forfeit the opportunity to use familiar (if risky) Chinese administrative-title vocabulary that at least conveys rank and derivative authority.
Cosmic powers / world-rulers of darkness (κοσμοκράτωρ, 6:12)Paraphrase (管辖这黑暗世界的) rather than transliteration or single-word renderingNo single Mandarin word captures “ruler-of-the-present-fallen-cosmic-order”; the descriptive paraphrase is required to avoid the folk-pantheon collision (§2.2) that a shorter, more idiomatic single-word choice would risk.
Great mystery — marriage typology (μυστήριον μέγα, 5:32)Reuse 奥秘 (same as general mystery term) rather than coining a separate marriage-specific termCoining a new term here would sever the reader’s connection to the letter’s controlling mystery-theme (Christ/church revealed in 1:9, 3:3-9); consistency of a single term across all mystery-occurrences is doctrinally more important than marriage-specific nuance, provided the redemptive-typological (not yin-yang cosmological) sense is taught at 5:32 specifically.

General principle governing this section: transliteration is reserved for proper names and already-fixed liturgical exclamations; every theological concept-term in Ephesians is handled by paraphrase/compound, because (per §2.1–2.2) the available single Mandarin words are either absent or already claimed by a rival worldview. This mirrors the baseline package’s own practice (e.g., 道成肉身, 儿子的名分) and is not a departure from it.

4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities in Ephesians

Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × collision strength × likelihood of silent drift in ordinary teaching prose, not just formal translation).

  1. Good works / grace causal direction (2:10, 善行 vs. 积善-style folk merit-accumulation). This is the core passage’s own climax verse. The stock Chinese proverb “积善之家必有余庆” is common enough that the wrong causal reading will occur to Mandarin-speaking readers by default, not merely by mistranslation. Mandatory theologian review; mandatory causal-direction gloss every occurrence.
  2. Submission and headship (5:21-33, 顺服/元首). Highest socio-political sensitivity of any term in the letter; collides simultaneously with a still-influential traditional hierarchy (三纲) and with live contemporary gender-equality discourse. Requires the mutual-submission/self-sacrificial-love frame to be structurally inseparable from the wife’s-submission clause in every derived lesson.
  3. Predestination/election vocabulary family (1:4-5, 11; 预定/拣选/定意/呼召) vs. fatalism (天命/命运/缘分/天意). The risk is not a single mistranslation but a slow, cumulative drift toward a fatalistic reading across repeated exposure, since the fatalism-vocabulary is the everyday default register for “things were determined in advance” in colloquial Mandarin. Requires the “in Christ” anchor as a non-droppable clause.
  4. Cosmic/spiritual powers vocabulary (1:21; 3:10; 6:12) vs. the legitimate-seeming Chinese folk pantheon. Unique among the ambiguities in this list because the wrong register (appeasement rather than resistance) could produce not just theological confusion but a practically syncretistic devotional posture (treating defeated powers as beings to respect). Requires the resist/already-subjected register fence with zero exceptions.
  5. Mystery (μυστήριον, 1:9; 3:3-9; 5:32; 6:19, 奥秘) as “hidden-but-now-disclosed.” Mandarin’s entire semantic field for mystery-class vocabulary defaults to ongoing concealment (an occult, geomantic, or esoteric-transmission register); the “now revealed to all” half of the doctrine will not be inferred by readers unless stated every time.
  6. New man/new humanity (2:15; 4:24, 新人) — corporate vs. individual sense conflation. Both senses share one Mandarin term; ordinary teaching prose that moves fluidly between “the church as one new humanity” and “your own personal renewal” risks collapsing Paul’s ecclesiological argument (Jew+Gentile) into a purely individual-piety point, silently erasing the unity-of-Jews-and-Gentiles doctrine from the passage.
  7. Idolatry naming (5:5, 拜偶像的) vs. living family religious practice. Unlike the other entries, the risk here is pastoral-relational rather than purely lexical: the literal target audience may include readers whose own family practices bowing before ancestral tablets or deity images. Requires deliberate framing distinguishing the text’s immediate point (covetousness as idolatry) from a blanket denunciation of family customs, to avoid either muting the text or needlessly alienating readers before the gospel is heard.
  8. Filled with the Spirit (5:18, 被圣灵充满) vs. deity-possession trance phenomena (被神明附身). Lower doctrinal centrality than items 1–7 but high experiential/behavioral collision risk in a culture where trance-possession is a live, observed phenomenon at folk temple festivals; requires the sober-fruit checklist (5:19-21) as the positive differentiator in every teaching context, not merely a doctrinal footnote.
  9. Honor father and mother “in the Lord” (6:1-2, 孝敬父母) — omission risk of the qualifying phrase. Ranked lowest of the nine because the underlying cultural resonance is positive rather than adversarial, but flagged because the very naturalness of the overlap with 孝 makes the qualifying phrase “in the Lord” the single most likely clause to be silently dropped by a translator seeking smoother, more idiomatic Mandarin — precisely the case where fluency and doctrinal precision pull in opposite directions.

5. Summary and Handoff

This gap analysis confirms that Ephesians introduces no doctrine that overturns a baseline Romans decision, but it substantially raises the density of Critical/High collision points per chapter relative to Romans, concentrated in three clusters: (1) the grace/works causal-direction cluster (2:8-10, this letter’s core passage), (2) the household-authority cluster (5:21-6:9), and (3) the spiritual-powers cluster (1:21; 3:10; 6:12). Phase 2 translation workers must treat these three clusters as requiring the highest density of inline anchoring clauses (not merely post-hoc footnotes) of any material in the curriculum. All term-level decisions referenced here are already recorded in 08_core_glossary.md and assets/bible_term_registry.json; this document supplies the why and where-it-will-fail reasoning that those two artifacts do not themselves narrate, and it should be read alongside them before Phase 1 Step 9 (doctrine risk registry extension) and before any Phase 2 system-prompt construction.

This document extends, and does not contradict, the baseline Romans Language Package. Where any apparent conflict exists between this analysis and translation_memory.json, the baseline governs.
