Core Glossary
Core Glossary — Habakkuk
TRI Phase 1, Step 1 Deliverable — English → Mandarin
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological term identified in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, across the core passage (Habakkuk 2:1–4) and all three chapters of the book. Terms already present in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked (baseline reuse) and their recorded Mandarin rendering is repeated here unchanged, per the hard rule that established renderings must be reused exactly. New terms proposed for this curriculum are marked (new — recommend for TM promotion).

Risk Tier Summary
| Risk | Count | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 4 | righteousness/tsaddiq, faith/emunah, law*, salvation/yeshuah (*law is High per baseline but flagged here at its inherited tier for cross-reference clarity — see note below) |
| High | 8 | mishpat, qum, qadosh, pesel/massekah, heikhal qodsho, mashiach, torah, and the compounded righteousness/faith pairing in 2:4 |
| Medium | 9 | tokhachat, chazon, mo’ed, chayah, massa, chamas, goy, betsa, kavod, rachamim |
| Low | 14 | remainder |
Note on tier reconciliation: 律法 (torah/law) is recorded as High in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json and is reproduced at that tier here; 义/义人 (righteousness), 信/信心 (faith), and 救恩 (salvation) are recorded as Critical in the baseline and are reproduced at that tier here. All four require human theologian review per the baseline routing rules, consistent with Phase 2 escalation procedures already defined in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
New Terms Recommended for Translation Memory Promotion (Phase 2 preparation)
The following terms have no existing baseline entry and should be added to translation_memory.json before Phase 2 segment translation begins, with the risk tiers and rejected alternatives noted in analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md:
- 默示 (vision/oracle, chazon and massa senses — two distinct entries recommended)
- 公理/审判 (mishpat — justice/judgment)
- 兴起 (qum — God raising up an instrument of judgment)
- 祸哉 (hoy — prophetic woe formula)
- 雕刻的偶像/铸造的偶像 (pesel/massekah — idols)
- 圣殿 (heikhal qodsho — God’s holy temple)
- 怜悯 (rachamim — covenant mercy/compassion)
- 受膏者 (mashiach, OT sense — deliberately distinct from 基督)
- 列国/邦国 (goy — nation as judgment-instrument, deliberately distinct from 外邦人)
- 强暴 (chamas — structural violence/injustice)
All ten require Medium-or-above review routing per the risk tiers assigned above before use in Phase 2 output.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: 神
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷
Original: אֱלוֹהִים / אֱלוֹהַ
Category: God
CRITICAL: this Language Package standardizes on 神 (the CUV ‘Shen edition’ reading) rather than 上帝 (Shàngdì), consistent with the baseline package. NEVER use 天 (tiān, impersonal Heaven) or 老天爷 alone. Note 神 is also the common noun for any deity/spirit (folk city gods, kitchen god, etc.); doctrinal contexts must make monotheism explicit rather than assume it. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: distinguish 神 (generic monotheistic reference) from 耶和华 (the covenant personal name used throughout the book); also note the ironic use in Habakkuk 1:11 where Babylon deifies its own strength (‘his own might is his god’) — teaching must keep monotheism explicit so 神 is not read as a generic noun any power can claim for itself.
Lord
Approved rendering: 主
Transliteration: zhǔ
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 主人, 老爷
Established term. Must not be softened toward 主人 (zhǔrén, an ordinary master/owner) or 老爷 (lǎoye, a feudal-era honorific), which reduce exclusive divine Lordship to a social-hierarchy title. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: renders Adonai joined to YHWH in Habakkuk 3:19 (‘GOD, the Lord, is my strength’); preserve the same exclusive-sovereignty force as in Romans 10:9.
Righteousness
Approved rendering: 义
Transliteration: yì
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 道德, 善行
CRITICAL: 义 is also one of the Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) — a social-ethical duty of rightness owed within relationships, cultivated by moral effort. Biblical righteousness (义) is a right standing before God received through faith, not a Confucian virtue achieved by moral cultivation. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: this is the OT source term for Habakkuk 2:4 (‘the righteous shall live by his faith’), quoted in Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, and Hebrews 10:38. Every occurrence of 义人 in Habakkuk requires the same distinguishing note as the baseline.
Salvation
Approved rendering: 救恩
Transliteration: jiùēn
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度, 得道
Original: יְשׁוּעָה / יֵשַׁע
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL: NEVER use 解脱 (Buddhist liberation from samsara) or 超度 (a posthumous release rite). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: Habakkuk 3:8, 3:13, and 3:18 use this term for God’s concrete, historical, this-life deliverance of his covenant people and king from the Babylonian threat — the OT-historical sense sits alongside, and does not replace, the fuller canonical sense already governed by this term.
Grace
Approved rendering: 恩典
Transliteration: ēndiǎn
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: 功德, 造化, 福气, 阴德
CRITICAL: NEVER use 功德 (Buddhist accumulated merit) or 阴德 (hidden merit accruing to descendants). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: relevant as the conceptual backdrop against which Habakkuk 2:4’s ‘the righteous shall live by faith’ must be taught — unearned trust, not merit-accounting, is the axis on which the whole curriculum’s central doctrine turns.
Messiah
Approved rendering: 基督
Transliteration: Jīdū
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: 弥勒, 救世主式泛称
CRITICAL: NEVER conflate with 弥勒 (Maitreya). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: reserved exclusively for the fulfilled NT title. Habakkuk 3:13’s OT-era ‘your anointed’ (mashiach) must NEVER be rendered with this term — see the dedicated ‘anointed_one’ entry below, which uses 受膏者 instead to avoid collapsing OT typology into NT fulfillment.
Imputed Righteousness
Approved rendering: 算为义
Transliteration: suàn wéi yì
Doctrine: Justification by Faith
Rejected alternatives: 修成正果的义, 自义
CRITICAL: righteousness credited by God, NOT earned through moral cultivation or self-righteousness. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: directly downstream of Habakkuk 2:4 canonically; useful cross-reference when teaching the trajectory from Habakkuk’s ‘the righteous shall live by faith’ to Romans 4’s fuller forensic doctrine.
Yhwh The Lord
Approved rendering: 耶和华
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá
Doctrine: The Covenant Name of God (YHWH)
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天
Original: יהוה
Category: God
New proper-noun entry, not present in the Romans-only baseline (Romans predominantly uses 神/主). The covenant, personal name of God (YHWH), used throughout Habakkuk far more often than the generic 神. Established CUV transliteration; distinct from the generic noun 神 (also the common noun for any deity/spirit in Chinese folk usage, e.g. 城隍, 灶神). Every occurrence must be taught as this particular, self-revealed, covenant-keeping God — the same God as 神 in monotheistic reference — not one personal deity-name among many in a folk-religious pantheon.
Emunah Faithfulness
Approved rendering: 信/信心
Transliteration: xìn / xìnxīn
Doctrine: The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
Rejected alternatives: 虔诚, 迷信
New Critical-tier entry specific to Habakkuk 2:4. Emunah (LXX: pistis) — firmness, steadfastness, sustained trust and reliance on God’s spoken word; the historical source-text for the NT doctrine of faith already governed by the baseline’s ‘faith’ entry (信心, High). The CUV renders this specific clause with the short form 信 (惟义人因信得生), which MUST be preserved for recognizability with Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, and Hebrews 10:38; use the full 信心 in surrounding teaching prose. Never soften toward generic 虔诚 or collapse into the righteous person’s own moral effort, which would reimport the Confucian-virtue reading flagged for 义. Teaching notes should mention that some scholars read the possessive pronoun as God’s own faithfulness (LXX ‘my faith’), available as nuance though the CUV/Masoretic ‘his faith’ is the mainstream rendering.
Habakkuk 2 4 Formula
Approved rendering: 惟义人因信得生
Transliteration: wéi yìrén yīn xìn dé shēng
Doctrine: The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
Rejected alternatives: 义人靠修行得生, 义人靠功德得生
New compound-clause entry for the full established CUV rendering of Habakkuk 2:4b. This exact clause MUST be reproduced verbatim wherever Habakkuk 2:4 is translated or quoted, and MUST remain identical to, and verbatim-consistent with, the established rendering of Romans 1:17 across the whole curriculum family. Any deviation between the Habakkuk translation and the Romans 1:17 rendering is an automatic Critical-tier flag requiring theologian review before either document may be marked complete.
High Risk Terms
Faith
Approved rendering: 信心
Transliteration: xìnxīn
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: 虔诚, 迷信, 信仰
Personal trust placed in Christ/God specifically; object of faith must be stated in context. 虔诚 (generic piety) is too broad; 迷信 (superstition) is a direct contradiction. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: the general NT/Christian-life sense of 信心 is retained here at its baseline risk tier (High); see the dedicated Critical-tier entry ‘emunah_faithfulness’ below for the specific 2:4 quotation clause, which carries elevated risk due to its cross-document load-bearing role.
Law
Approved rendering: 律法
Transliteration: lǜfǎ
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: 礼, 道德规范, 法律
Original: תּוֹרָה
Category: Covenant
NEVER equate with 礼 (Confucian ritual propriety) or 法律 (secular/civil law). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: Habakkuk 1:4’s complaint that ‘the law is paralyzed’ concerns the Mosaic covenant law’s societal non-enforcement, a new teaching angle not present in Romans’ more soteriological torah discussions, but not a new doctrinal sense of the term itself.
Holy
Approved rendering: 圣洁
Transliteration: shèngjié
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: 清净, 圣人般的
圣洁 = set apart for God and morally pure. Avoid 清净 (Daoist/Buddhist ritual/meditative purity). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: this adjective underlies the new compound title 我的圣者 (‘my Holy One,’ Habakkuk 1:12) — see the dedicated ‘holy_one’ entry below.
Providence
Approved rendering: 神的护理
Transliteration: Shén de hùlǐ
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: 天意, 命运
NEVER use 天意 (‘heaven’s intention’) alone. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: directly relevant to fencing the new term 兴起 (qum, ‘raise up’) against the same impersonal-fatalism reading this entry already forbids for Romans 8:28.
Election
Approved rendering: 拣选
Transliteration: jiǎnxuǎn
Doctrine: Effectual Calling
Rejected alternatives: 天命, 命运, 缘分
NEVER use 天命 (Mandate of Heaven) or 命运/缘分. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: this entry’s forbidden-substitution list applies directly to fencing 兴起 (God raising up Babylon) against Mandate-of-Heaven-style revocable-legitimacy logic.
Power Of God
Approved rendering: 神的大能
Transliteration: Shén de dà néng
Doctrine: Power of God for Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 气, 法力
NEVER use 气 (qì) or 法力. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: kept deliberately distinct from the new plain term 力量 (chayil, Habakkuk 3:19); reserve 大能 for explicit cross-references to the Romans 1:16 doctrine so learners do not assume 3:19 quotes that specific technical category.
Sin
Approved rendering: 罪
Transliteration: zuì
Doctrine: Universal Human Accountability
Rejected alternatives: 报应, 罪犯式的罪
Clarify sin as a moral offense against a personal God requiring atonement, not merely bad karmic consequence. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: directly relevant to fencing the new term 恶人 (rasha, ‘the wicked’) against a karmic-retribution (报应) reading — wickedness in Habakkuk is covenantal moral offense requiring God’s own judgment, not a self-correcting cosmic imbalance.
Justice Judgment
Approved rendering: 公理/审判
Transliteration: gōnglǐ / shěnpàn
Doctrine: Social Justice and the Breakdown of Mishpat
Rejected alternatives: 义, 法律
Original: מִשְׁפָּט
Category: Justice
New term. Mishpat (Habakkuk 1:4, used twice with distinct nuances): a legal verdict or the broader principle of a just social-legal order. Must be kept visually and conceptually distinct from 义 (baseline Critical term for forensic righteousness) so readers do not collapse social/legal justice and individual right standing before God into one idea. Render context-dependently: 公理 for abstract order, 审判 for concrete verdict, following CUV precedent.
Raise Up
Approved rendering: 兴起
Transliteration: xīngqǐ
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty in Using Nations for Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 天意, 命运, 天命所归, 天命
Original: קוּם (הִפְעִיל: מֵקִים)
Category: Sovereignty
New term. Qum (causative) — God’s active, purposeful establishment of the Chaldeans as judgment-instrument (Habakkuk 1:6). Must be taught alongside a note that this does not make God the author of Babylon’s own sin (Habakkuk’s own second complaint, 1:12-17, wrestles with exactly this tension, resolved by the woes of chapter 2). Must not import Mandate-of-Heaven-style revocable-legitimacy logic, which would recast judgment as an earned cosmic transfer rather than a personal, righteous act.
Holy One
Approved rendering: 我的圣者
Transliteration: wǒ de shèngzhě
Doctrine: Divine Holiness and Justice Tension
Rejected alternatives: 清净
Original: קָדוֹשׁ
Category: God
New term, built on the baseline adjective 圣洁. A divine title, ‘my Holy One’ (qadosh), invoked by Habakkuk even while questioning God’s use of a wicked instrument (Habakkuk 1:12). Must not slide into a ritual-purity reading (清净); this is a moral-relational appeal to God’s own righteous character.
Idol
Approved rendering: 雕刻的偶像/铸造的偶像
Transliteration: diāokè de ǒuxiàng / zhùzào de ǒuxiàng
Doctrine: Futility of Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 神像
Original: פֶּסֶל / מַסֵּכָה
Category: God
New term. Pesel/massekah — manufactured cultic images mocked as lifeless in the fifth woe (Habakkuk 2:18-19). Requires explicit cultural framing given active contemporary Chinese folk-religious, Buddhist, and Daoist image veneration; teach as a specific covenant claim about the incomparability of the living God, not generic anti-superstition moralizing. Avoid a mocking tone toward living relatives’ practices.
Holy Temple
Approved rendering: 圣殿
Transliteration: shèngdiàn
Doctrine: Futility of Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 庙, 寺, 道观
Original: הֵיכַל קֳדְשׁוֹ
Category: God
New term, reusing the modifier 圣 from the baseline 圣洁/圣灵 family. Heikhal qodsho — the LORD’s holy dwelling place, the climactic answer to the idol polemic (Habakkuk 2:20: ‘the LORD is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him’). Must be kept distinct from 庙/寺/道观 (all baseline-forbidden for ‘church’); names the dwelling of the one true God only.
Anointed One
Approved rendering: 受膏者
Transliteration: shòugāo zhě
Doctrine: Messianic Anticipation and Typology
Rejected alternatives: 基督
Original: מָשִׁיחַ
Category: Christology
New term, DELIBERATELY distinct from the baseline’s 基督. Mashiach (‘your anointed,’ Habakkuk 3:13) most immediately denotes the Davidic king and/or Israel as God’s anointed covenant leader/people in this historical crisis, not a direct, explicit naming of Jesus. Rendering with 基督 would prematurely collapse OT typology into NT fulfillment. Requires a typological teaching note connecting, but not equating, this OT background with the later fulfilled title.
Medium Risk Terms
Glory
Approved rendering: 荣耀
Transliteration: róngyào
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 面子, 光宗耀祖
Original: כָּבוֹד
Category: God
Avoid collapsing into 面子 (‘face’/social reputation) or 光宗耀祖 (ancestral family honor). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: 2:14’s promise that ‘the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD’ functions as the eschatological counterpoint to the dead idols denounced in the same chapter (2:18-20).
Prophecy
Approved rendering: 预言
Transliteration: yùyán
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: 算卦, 占卜
God-inspired declaration of what he will do; distinguish from 算卦/占卜 (divination). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: reserved for the content of divine disclosure; the new term 默示 (chazon/massa) is reserved for the mode of reception — keep the two conceptually distinct in teaching notes even where they overlap in reference.
Peace
Approved rendering: 平安
Transliteration: píng’ān
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: 安宁, 平安符式的平安
平安 is also the everyday greeting/blessing word for general well-being. INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: structurally relevant to fencing Habakkuk 3:17-19’s trust-and-rejoicing doctrine against a similar collapse into generic well-wishing rather than covenantal, promise-grounded confidence.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: 外邦人
Transliteration: wàibāngrén
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: 夷人, 外国人
NEVER use 夷人 (historic ‘barbarian’ Hua-Yi distinction). INHERITED FROM ROMANS PACKAGE. Habakkuk-specific note: DELIBERATELY NOT used for Habakkuk’s goy (nations) — see the new ‘nations’ entry below. 外邦人 is reserved exclusively for the NT Jew/Gentile ecclesiological-unity doctrine; using it for Babylon in Habakkuk would misleadingly import that NT category into an OT geopolitical-instrument context.
Complaint
Approved rendering: 我的诉求
Transliteration: wǒ de sùqiú
Doctrine: Wrestling with God over Injustice
Rejected alternatives: 抱怨, 控诉
Original: תּוֹכַחַת
Category: Prophecy
New term. A formal complaint/reproof brought within a covenant-lawsuit (rîv) framework, not casual grumbling. Avoid 抱怨 (trivializes into petty grievance) and 控诉 (too adversarial/accusatory toward God). Must be taught as a reverent but real remonstrance addressed to a personal God expected to answer — distinct from disrespectful defiance and from fatalistic resignation to impersonal 报应.
Vision
Approved rendering: 默示
Transliteration: mòshì
Doctrine: Inspiration of Prophetic Revelation
Rejected alternatives: 占卜, 算卦, 预言(reserved for content, not mode)
Original: חָזוֹן
Category: Prophecy
New term. Prophetic revelation received and fixed in writing as authoritative disclosure from a personal God (chazon, Habakkuk 2:2-3). Must not be rendered with divination-adjacent vocabulary. Distinct from 预言 (the content foretold, baseline term), which describes what is disclosed rather than the mode of disclosure.
Oracle Burden
Approved rendering: 默示
Transliteration: mòshì
Doctrine: Wrestling with God over Injustice
Rejected alternatives: 预言, 消息
Original: מַשָּׂא
Category: Prophecy
New term. The book’s title-word (massa, Habakkuk 1:1), a weighty, often ominous oracle of judgment. Renders identically to ‘vision’ (chazon) in Mandarin but must not be softened into a generic ‘message’; teaching notes must distinguish massa’s judgment-oracle weight from chazon’s revelation-mode connotation even though the surface form is shared.
Appointed Time
Approved rendering: 所定的时候
Transliteration: suǒ dìng de shíhòu
Doctrine: Trust and Rejoicing amid Hardship
Rejected alternatives: 缘分, 命运, 天意
Original: מוֹעֵד
Category: Salvation
New term. A divinely fixed point in time for the vision’s fulfillment (mo’ed, Habakkuk 2:3). Must not be rendered with fatalistic destiny vocabulary already forbidden under the baseline’s election/providence entries. Pair firmly with 不至虚谎 (‘will not lie/fail’) to reinforce personal-God framing.
Live
Approved rendering: 得生
Transliteration: dé shēng
Doctrine: The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度, 存活
Original: חָיָה
Category: Salvation
New term. To be preserved alive under God’s covenant favor (chayah, Habakkuk 2:4). Aligns with the CUV’s established phrase 义人因信得生. Present both the immediate historical sense (preservation through the coming catastrophe) and its later canonical trajectory toward the baseline’s fuller 救恩 doctrine, without collapsing one into the other.
Violence Injustice
Approved rendering: 强暴
Transliteration: qiángbào
Doctrine: Wrestling with God over Injustice
Rejected alternatives: 暴力
Original: חָמָס
Category: Justice
New term. Wrongful violence and structural social injustice by the powerful against the vulnerable (chamas, Habakkuk 1:2-3). Must retain its systemic-injustice register; always co-occur with 公理/审判 and 律法 to prevent narrowing to isolated interpersonal assault.
Wicked
Approved rendering: 恶人
Transliteration: èrén
Doctrine: Wrestling with God over Injustice
Rejected alternatives: 罪犯式的恶人
Original: רָשָׁע
Category: Justice
New term. The direct covenantal antonym of tsaddiq (rasha), Habakkuk 1:4, 1:13; extended to Babylon in 1:13 and 2:5-20. Must not carry a karmic-retribution undertone (报应); wickedness is moral offense against a personal covenant God requiring judgment, not a self-correcting karmic imbalance.
Nations
Approved rendering: 列国/邦国
Transliteration: lièguó / bāngguó
Doctrine: God’s Sovereignty in Using Nations for Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 外邦人
Original: גּוֹי
Category: Sovereignty
New term. Goy — a generic political-ethnic nation (Habakkuk 1:5-6, 1:17), here referring to Babylon as a geopolitical power God sovereignly directs. DELIBERATELY distinct from the baseline’s 外邦人 (reserved for the NT Jew/Gentile ecclesiological-unity doctrine); using 外邦人 here would misleadingly import that category into an OT geopolitical-instrument context.
Unjust Gain
Approved rendering: 不义之财
Transliteration: bùyì zhī cái
Doctrine: Divine Judgment on Pride and Exploitation
Original: בֶּצַע
Category: Justice
New term. Betsa — profit acquired through violence/extortion (Habakkuk 2:9-11). NOTE: this compound uses 义 in its ordinary idiomatic sense (‘proper/fair’), not the forensic-righteousness doctrinal sense; flag for translators so this common idiom is not mistakenly treated as a technical righteousness statement requiring a distinguishing note.
Mercy Compassion
Approved rendering: 怜悯
Transliteration: liánmǐn
Doctrine: God’s Mercy amid Wrath
Rejected alternatives: 同情, 消灾祈福式的安抚
Original: רַחֲמִים / רַחֶם
Category: God
New term. Rachamim — covenantal mercy/compassion; God’s inclination to show tenderness even amid deserved judgment (‘in wrath remember mercy,’ Habakkuk 3:2). Must be taught as relational compassion from a personal God, not generic pity (同情) nor appeasement won through ritual offering (消灾祈福式的安抚), as in ancestor-veneration or folk-deity placation.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: 先知
