Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — James — English → Mandarin
Purpose
This document is the full doctrine matrix for the James curriculum, produced under PRD Phase 1 Steps 4-5. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 9 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing) and extends the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json and translation_memory.json without contradicting either. James 2:14-26 (Faith and Works) is the curriculum’s theological anchor but not its scope boundary: this analysis spans James 1-5 in full, chapter by chapter, per the FULL-BOOK COVERAGE mandate. Every chapter is explicitly accounted for below; no chapter or major section is silently omitted.
Part A — Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Mandarin Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages (James) | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Faith and Works | 信心与行为 | 1:22-25; 2:14-26 | Critical | 行为 (works) sits inside the live Buddhist merit-accounting worldview (功德/阴德) the baseline flags Critical under Grace. “Faith without works is dead” is acutely vulnerable to a salvation-by-merit reading, reversing Romans 4’s 算为义, which 2:23 quotes from the identical Genesis 15:6 text. 称义 here means vindication/demonstration, not a second forensic ground; every occurrence needs a clarifying note preventing an apparent Paul-James contradiction. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Trials and the Testing of Faith | 试炼与信心的考验 | 1:2-4; 1:8; 1:12-15; 5:7-11 | High | 试炼 (God-permitted, faith-maturing trial) and 试探 (sin-enticing temptation, never from God, 1:13) must never collapse into one Mandarin term — doing so would imply God tempts to sin. 忍耐 is reused for a second Greek term (μακροθυμία) in ch.5; risk of flattening “endure present pressure” into “wait for a future event” without distinction. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Wisdom from Above | 从上头来的智慧 | 1:5-8; 3:13-18 | High | Risk of assimilation to Buddhist/Daoist wisdom (智慧/般若) attained through meditative practice or enlightenment, rather than a gift from a personal God received by simple, undoubting request and evidenced by ethical fruit. 属情欲的 (“soulish”) risks being heard as a claim the human soul is inherently corrupt rather than describing wisdom’s merely-natural source. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Favoritism and the Poor | 偏待人的罪与穷人 | 1:9-11; 1:27; 2:1-13; 5:1-6 | High | 怜恤 (mercy) risks conflation with Buddhist compassion (慈悲), often understood in folk practice as merit-generating for the giver. 至尊的律法/使人自由的律法 (royal law/law of liberty) must be distinguished both from Confucian ritual-propriety code 礼 (already rejected in baseline for νόμος) and from a legalistic law that would contradict grace. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Taming the Tongue | 驯服舌头 | 1:19-20; 1:26; 3:1-12; 4:11-12; 5:12 | Medium | 地狱 (Gehenna, 3:6) risks assimilation to the Buddhist/folk multi-level, transitable underworld (超度-adjacent concepts already rejected in baseline) rather than the tongue’s ultimate corrupting source. 起誓/誓言 (oath, 5:12) carries folk incense-/blood-oath and temple-vow resonance with quasi-magical binding force; James commends transparent speech needing no external guarantor. | Native speaker review |
| 6 | Worldliness versus Friendship with God | 世俗与与神为友 | 1:27; 4:1-10; 4:13-17 | High | 恩典 (grace, 4:6) reuses the baseline Critical term and must retain unmerited character even contrasted with pride rather than works. 主若愿意 (4:15) risks flattening into the impersonal, fatalistic 天意 the baseline already warns against under Providence — this is active submission to a personal Lord, not passive resignation to blind fate. 与世俗为友/神的朋友 form a deliberate exclusive-loyalty pair that must not soften into compromise. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Prayer and Healing | 祷告与医治 | 5:13-18 | High | 用油抹 (anoint with oil) risks assimilation to Daoist/folk ritual-oil, talisman, or exorcistic anointing practices operating on an independent ritual-power logic; efficacy is in prayer “in the name of the Lord,” not the oil. 出于信心的祷告 risks a mechanical prosperity-gospel/faith-guarantees-healing reading. 叫他起来 (raise up from sickness) must never be rendered 复活 (baseline’s exclusive resurrection-from-death term). | Human theologian |
| 8 | Patience and the Lord’s Return | 忍耐等候主的再来 | 5:7-11 | Critical | 主来/主的降临 sits beside the baseline’s Critical messianic_promise entry, which forbids conflating Christ with 弥勒 (Maitreya), the future Buddha of Chinese Buddhist eschatology. James 5:7-8’s near expectation must be taught as Christ’s own singular, definite, promised return — not a Maitreya-style as-yet-unidentified future world-savior, nor a cyclical (治乱循环) historiographical pattern. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Confession and Restoration | 认罪与灵魂的挽回 | 5:16; 5:19-20 | High | 遮盖许多的罪 must be taught strictly as the fruit of gospel-driven repentance and forgiveness in Christ, never as a merit-transaction on a karmic ledger (功德/阴德 logic, already Critical in baseline under Grace). 灵魂 must be distinguished from a transmigrating soul-substance subject to 轮回 (already forbidden in baseline under Resurrection). 彼此认罪 is mutual/voluntary among believers, not sacramental confession to a clerical mediator nor folk public shaming. | Human theologian |
Risk Summary (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical: 2 · High: 6 · Medium: 1 · Low: 0 · Theologian review required: 8 · Native speaker review: 1 · Automated only: 0
Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage (Full Book)
This section demonstrates FULL-BOOK COVERAGE per the PRD mandate: every chapter of James is explicitly reviewed below, whether or not it introduces new load-bearing doctrine beyond what is already catalogued in Part A.
James 1 — Trials, Wisdom, the Word, and Pure Religion
- 1:1 — Greeting; “servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ” (仆人, 主耶稣基督). Low risk; establishes authorial voice, no new doctrine beyond baseline 主/神/耶稣基督 terms.
- 1:2-4, 12 — Trials and the Testing of Faith doctrine anchor; 试炼/忍耐/试验 introduced (see Doctrine #2).
- 1:5-8 — Wisdom from Above doctrine anchor; 智慧, 心怀二意 (double-minded) introduced (Doctrine #3).
- 1:9-11 — First appearance of the rich/poor reversal theme feeding into Favoritism and the Poor (Doctrine #4); low-humble (谦卑) / rich brought low.
- 1:13-15 — Trials and the Testing of Faith: 试探 (temptation) explicitly distinguished from 试炼; 私欲 (desire/lust) introduced, feeding forward into ch.4 Worldliness doctrine.
- 1:16-18 — God as unchanging giver of good gifts, “Father of lights” (光明的父); reinforces baseline 父 term (no ancestor-veneration collision) and anticipates 4:6’s 恩典.
- 1:19-20 — Opening statement of Taming the Tongue doctrine (slow to speak/quick to hear), continued in ch.3 (Doctrine #5).
- 1:21-25 — 真道/所栽种的道 (implanted word) and 行道的人 (doer of the word) introduced; feeds directly into Faith and Works doctrine (Doctrine #1) as the chapter’s programmatic statement.
- 1:26-27 — Favoritism and the Poor doctrine’s ethical anchor (孤儿寡妇, widows/orphans) plus 虔诚 (religion/practice) and 清洁/没有玷污 (pure/undefiled); also reinforces Taming the Tongue (tongue-control as a mark of true religion).
- Chapter 1 coverage note: reviewed in full; contributes doctrines #1 (foundation), #2, #3, #4 (foundation), #5 (opening).
James 2 — Favoritism and Faith with Works
- 2:1-7 — Favoritism and the Poor doctrine core case study (rich/poor in the assembly); 按外貌待人/偏待人 introduced alongside 荣耀 (glorious Lord, reusing baseline term).
- 2:8-13 — 至尊的律法/使人自由的律法 (royal law/law of liberty), 律法 (baseline reuse), 怜恤 (mercy), 邻舍 (neighbor) — completes Doctrine #4’s key-terms set.
- 2:14-26 — Faith and Works doctrine anchor and the curriculum’s core passage; every term in Doctrine #1 (行为, 称义, 算为义, 义, 死的, 救, 神的朋友, 身体, 灵魂/灵) is concentrated here. This is the theological center of gravity for the whole curriculum and requires maximal review density.
- Chapter 2 coverage note: reviewed in full; contributes doctrines #4 (core) and #1 (core/anchor).
James 3 — The Tongue and Two Wisdoms
- 3:1-12 — Taming the Tongue doctrine core (舌头, 勒住/bridle, 地狱/Gehenna); vivid body-part and nature imagery (horse bit, ship’s rudder, fire, spring) requiring natural, non-idiomatically-flattened Mandarin rendering per the Idiom Handling rules inherited from the baseline instruction set.
- 3:13-18 — Wisdom from Above doctrine core continuation (从上头来的智慧 vs. 属地的/属情欲的/属鬼魔的 false wisdom); 义的果子 (fruit of righteousness) and 和平 (interpersonal peace, distinct from baseline 平安) introduced.
- Chapter 3 coverage note: reviewed in full; contributes doctrines #5 (core) and #3 (core).
James 4 — Worldliness, Humility, and Providence
- 4:1-6 — Worldliness versus Friendship with God doctrine anchor (与世俗为友, 神的朋友 [cross-referenced back to 2:23], 恩典 reused, 谦卑的人/骄傲的人).
- 4:7-10 — Continuation: 魔鬼 (devil) introduced; call to humble submission before a personal God, reinforcing the exclusive-loyalty framing.
- 4:11-12 — Taming the Tongue doctrine extension (论断/说閒话, judging/speaking against a brother; 设立律法的, lawgiver) — a second concentration point for Doctrine #5 outside chapter 3.
- 4:13-17 — Worldliness versus Friendship with God doctrine extension: 主若愿意 (if the Lord wills) — the chapter’s climactic providence statement.
- Chapter 4 coverage note: reviewed in full; contributes doctrine #6 (core, two concentration points) and doctrine #5 (secondary concentration point).
James 5 — Wealth, Patience, Prayer, and Restoration
- 5:1-6 — Favoritism and the Poor doctrine extension: oppression of laborers, 工价 (wages), 万军之主 (Lord of Hosts) — the chapter’s judgment-oracle continuation of Doctrine #4.
- 5:7-11 — Patience and the Lord’s Return doctrine anchor (忍耐/μακροθυμία, 主来/主的降临, 审判的主, 坚固, 先知 reused).
- 5:12 — Taming the Tongue doctrine extension: 誓言/起誓 (oath) — third concentration point for Doctrine #5.
- 5:13-18 — Prayer and Healing doctrine anchor (教会的长老, 用油抹, 出于信心的祷告, 叫他起来, 大有功效).
- 5:19-20 — Confession and Restoration doctrine anchor (彼此认罪, 灵魂, 遮盖许多的罪, 使…回转).
- Chapter 5 coverage note: reviewed in full; contributes doctrine #4 (extension), #8 (core/anchor), #5 (extension), #7 (core/anchor), #9 (core/anchor).
Part C — Consistency Cross-Reference
- All nine doctrines, risk tiers, and review routings in Part A are identical to
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.jsonv1 (2026-07-09). No tier has been altered in this document. - All Mandarin term renderings referenced above trace to
analysis/08_core_glossary.md(Phase 1 Step 8 submission) and, where marked BASELINE, to the Romanstranslation_memory.json. - No chapter of James (1-5) is without doctrinal coverage in Part B; the core passage James 2:14-26 is confirmed as the theological anchor (Doctrine #1) but the analysis extends across the full book as required.
This document must be loaded alongside assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and analysis/08_core_glossary.md before Phase 2 segment translation begins.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Faith and Works
Mandarin name: 信心与行为
Key terms: faith, works, justified, dead faith, imputed righteousness, doer of the word
Review routing: Human theologian
行为 (works) sits directly inside the live Buddhist merit-accounting worldview (功德/阴德) the baseline already flags as Critical under Grace; James 2:14-26’s ‘faith without works is dead’ is acutely vulnerable to being heard as salvation-by-accumulated-merit, precisely reversing Romans 4’s 算为义 (imputed righteousness), which James 2:23 quotes from the very same Genesis 15:6 text. 称义 (justification) here names vindication/demonstration of already-imputed righteousness through obedient action, not a second forensic ground; every occurrence requires a note preventing an apparent Paul-James contradiction.
Patience and the Lord’s Return
Mandarin name: 忍耐等候主的再来
Key terms: patience/longsuffering, the Lord’s coming/parousia, judge, lord of hosts, establish hearts
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: 主来/主的降临 (the Lord’s coming) sits directly beside the baseline’s Critical messianic_promise entry, which already forbids conflating Christ with 弥勒 (Maitreya), the future Buddha expected in Chinese Buddhist eschatology to appear in a coming age. James 5:7-8’s near expectation of ‘the Lord’s coming’ must be taught as Christ’s own singular, definite, promised return — not assimilated to a Maitreya-style expectation of an as-yet-unidentified future world-savior, nor to a cyclical eschatology (治乱循环) that shapes intuitive Chinese historical reading.
High Risk Doctrines
Trials and the Testing of Faith
Mandarin name: 试炼与信心的考验
Key terms: trial, temptation, testing/proving, endurance, double-minded
Review routing: Human theologian
Greek πειρασμός covers both God-permitted, faith-maturing trial (1:2-4,12, rendered 试炼) and sin-enticing temptation that never originates from God (1:13-14, rendered 试探); collapsing these into a single Mandarin term would risk implying God tempts people to sin, a direct contradiction of 1:13. 忍耐 (endurance) is reused for a second, related-but-distinct Greek term (μακροθυμία, patient waiting) in chapter 5, risking doctrinal flattening between enduring present pressure and waiting for a future promised event.
Wisdom from Above
Mandarin name: 从上头来的智慧
Key terms: wisdom, wisdom from above, earthly/soulish/demonic wisdom, fruit of righteousness, interpersonal peace
Review routing: Human theologian
从上头来的智慧 (wisdom from above) risks assimilation to Buddhist/Daoist wisdom (智慧/般若) attained through meditative practice or enlightenment; James presents wisdom as a gift from a personal God received by simple, undoubting request (1:5-6), evidenced by ethical fruit (3:17), not a mystical attainment through spiritual technique. ψυχικός (‘soulish,’ 属情欲的) also risks being heard as a claim that the human soul is inherently corrupt, which would collide with folk soul-concepts; the note must clarify this describes wisdom’s merely-natural source, not the soul’s ontological status.
Favoritism and the Poor
Mandarin name: 偏待人的罪与穷人
Key terms: favoritism, royal law/law of liberty, mercy, rich and poor, wages, glory
Review routing: Human theologian
怜恤 (mercy) risks conflation with Buddhist compassion (慈悲), which in folk practice is often understood as merit-generating for the giver; James grounds mercy toward the poor in God’s own character and the royal law of love (2:8,13), not in an act that accrues merit for the almsgiver. 至尊的律法/使人自由的律法 (royal law/law of liberty) must be distinguished from the Confucian ritual-propriety code 礼 already rejected in the baseline for νόμος, and from a legalistic law that would contradict grace.
Worldliness versus Friendship with God
Mandarin name: 世俗与与神为友
Key terms: friendship with the world, friend of God, grace, humble/proud, devil, if the Lord wills, world/worldliness
Review routing: Human theologian
恩典 (grace, 4:6) reuses the baseline’s Critical term and must retain its unmerited character even when contrasted with pride rather than works. 主若愿意 (‘if the Lord wills,’ 4:15) risks flattening into the impersonal, fatalistic 天意 (‘heaven’s intention’) the baseline already warns against under Providence in Romans — James commends active submission to a personal Lord’s will, not passive resignation to blind cosmic fate. 与世俗为友/神的朋友 form a deliberate exclusive-loyalty pair (4:4; 2:23) that must not be softened into a both/and compromise between devotion to God and the world.
Prayer and Healing
Mandarin name: 祷告与医治
Key terms: anoint with oil, prayer of faith, elders of the church, save/heal, raise up from sickness
Review routing: Human theologian
用油抹 (anoint with oil, 5:14) risks assimilation to Daoist/folk-religious ritual-oil, talisman-oil, or exorcistic anointing practices that operate on an independent ritual-power logic; efficacy in James derives from prayer offered ‘in the name of the Lord’ combined with ordinary medicinal care, not from the oil as a vehicle of autonomous supernatural power. 出于信心的祷告 (prayer of faith) risks a mechanical health-and-wealth-gospel reading in which faith functions as a guaranteed formula for physical healing. 叫他起来 (raise up, 5:15) must never be rendered with 复活 (the baseline’s exclusive resurrection-from-death term), since this is restoration from sickness, not resurrection from death.
Confession and Restoration
Mandarin name: 认罪与灵魂的挽回
Key terms: confess sins, prayer of a righteous person, cover a multitude of sins, soul from death, turn back/restore
Review routing: Human theologian
遮盖许多的罪 (cover a multitude of sins, 5:20) must be taught strictly as the result of gospel-driven repentance and forgiveness in Christ, never as a merit-transaction in which the act of restoring a wandering sinner itself functions as an offsetting good deed on a karmic ledger — the same 功德/阴德 logic already Critical in the baseline under Grace. 灵魂 (soul, 5:20) must be distinguished from a transmigrating soul-substance subject to 轮回 (reincarnation), already forbidden in the baseline under Resurrection; this soul faces a single, final destiny, not a cycle of rebirths. 彼此认罪 (confess to one another) is mutual and voluntary among believers, not a sacramental confession to a clerical mediator nor a folk-ritual public shaming.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Taming the Tongue
Mandarin name: 驯服舌头
Key terms: tongue, bridle, hell/Gehenna, oath, judging/speaking against
Review routing: Native speaker review
地狱 (Gehenna/hell, 3:6) risks assimilation to the Buddhist/folk multi-level, often purgatorial underworld through which a soul may pass and later be released via ritual intervention (超度-adjacent concepts already rejected in the baseline under Salvation); James names hell as the tongue’s ultimate corrupting source, not a way-station. 起誓/誓言 (oath) carries cultural resonance with folk incense- or blood-oaths and temple vows sworn before deities or ancestors with quasi-magical binding force; James’s concern is transparent truthful speech needing no external guarantor, not a polemic against a specific folk ritual.
