09 — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Hosea
Methodological Note
This document maps every Old Testament quotation, allusion, and typological pattern in Hosea (chapters 1–14), every New Testament use of Hosea, and every point of contact with the baseline Romans Language Package curriculum (and, where the shared language-package tag list makes it relevant, other curricula in the same tag list — Matthew, 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, 1 Peter, Revelation). All citations use the normalized “Book Chapter:Verse” format (e.g., “Hosea 11:1”, “Matthew 2:15”, “Romans 9:25-26”, “Genesis 15:6”) for portability across Phase 2 tooling. Mandarin term renderings referenced below follow 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md exactly; this document does not introduce new renderings, only cross-reference and consistency rules governing their reuse.
PART 1 — Cross-Reference Matrix, Chapter by Chapter
Columns: Passage (Hosea) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity
Chapter 1
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 1:2 | Prophetic sign-act embodying covenant-breaking | Hosea; Gomer | OT: Isaiah 20:1-6 (Isaiah’s sign-act nakedness); Ezekiel 4:1-17 (siege sign-act). No direct NT quotation. | Must be framed as a divinely commanded prophetic sign-act, not a moral tale or explicit content. 淫妇 (established, High) requires this framing in every teaching context. |
| Hosea 1:4-5 (Jezreel) | Judgment recalling historical bloodshed | Jehu; house of Jehu | OT: 2 Kings 9:1–10:11 (Jehu’s massacre at Jezreel). | Wordplay (“God sows” / judgment-site) lost in bare transliteration (耶斯列); footnote mandatory. |
| Hosea 1:9-10; 2:23 (Lo-Ammi negated/restored; “sons of the living God”) | Covenant formula repudiated, then restored | Israel corporately | OT: Exodus 6:7 (covenant formula “I will be your God, you will be my people”); Genesis 22:17, 32:12 (innumerable-offspring promise, echoed in “sand of the sea,” Hosea 1:10). NT: Romans 9:25-26 (Paul quotes both Hosea 2:23 and 1:10 together as proof of Gentile inclusion); 1 Peter 2:10 (near-verbatim echo of the same reversal). | Critical cross-curriculum link. See Rendering-Consistency Rule R1 (Part 3). Mandarin rendering of “sons of the living God” here must match the rendering used wherever Romans 9:26 is taught in the Romans curriculum. |
Chapter 2
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 2:2-13 | Covenant lawsuit (rîb) against the adulterous wife | Israel (personified wife) | OT: Deuteronomy 32:1-25; Isaiah 1:2-20; Micah 6:1-5 (covenant-lawsuit genre); Jeremiah 2:1–3:5 (the closest OT parallel: an extended marriage-adultery metaphor for idolatry). | Medium: genre-awareness note recommended so the passage is not read as a private domestic dispute but as a formal covenant indictment. |
| Hosea 2:14-15 (Valley of Achor) | Judgment-site reversed into a gateway of hope | Achan (implied background) | OT: Joshua 7:24-26 (Achan’s sin and judgment at Achor). | Medium: footnote on Joshua 7 required for the reversal to register as intentional. |
| Hosea 2:16-17 (Ishi/Baali wordplay) | Purging syncretistic vocabulary from covenant address | — | OT: Exodus 23:13 (“make no mention of the names of other gods”). NT: conceptually parallel to 1 Corinthians 8:5-6 (many so-called gods, one God). | Critical: wordplay (伊施/巴力) is untranslatable directly into Mandarin without a gloss; footnote mandatory (established in 07/08). |
| Hosea 2:19-20 (betrothal; five covenant qualities) | Eschatological re-betrothal of God and people | — | NT: Ephesians 5:25-32 (Christ and the church as bridegroom and bride); Revelation 19:7-9 and 21:2 (marriage supper of the Lamb; the bride adorned) — the major forward typological trajectory for “The Marriage Metaphor” doctrine. | High: the five-quality list (义/公平/慈爱/怜悯/信实) must render internally consistently; see 08 Critical flag on 义/慈爱 pairing. |
| Hosea 2:23 (“I will sow her for myself…”) | Reversal of Jezreel/Lo-Ammi names | — | NT: Romans 9:25 (Paul quotes this verse, paired with Hosea 1:10, as his scriptural warrant for Gentile inclusion in Romans 9-11). | Critical. The single most theologically load-bearing direct OT-quotation link between Hosea and the Romans curriculum. See Rule R1. |
Chapter 3
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 3:1-2 (redemption price) | Costly, initiated redemption | Hosea; Gomer | OT: Exodus 21:32 (thirty shekels, a slave’s redemption price); Leviticus 27:1-8 (redemption valuations). | High: must be read alongside, but not confused with, chapter 2’s non-transactional betrothal language (established in 07). |
| Hosea 3:5 (“David their king”) | Post-exilic Davidic hope | David | OT: 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant). NT: Romans 1:3 (Christ “descended from David according to the flesh”); Luke 1:32-33 (angelic announcement of an eternal Davidic throne to Jesus). | Critical cross-curriculum link. Must be taught with explicit reference to the Romans curriculum’s “Davidic Covenant” and “Messianic Promise” doctrines (both Critical/High in the Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json). 大卫 reused exactly per baseline. |
Chapter 4
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 4:1, 4:6 (“no knowledge of God”) | Covenant-knowledge indictment | Priests; people | OT: Isaiah 1:3 (the ox and donkey know their master; Israel does not); Jeremiah 4:22, 9:3-6. NT: Matthew 9:13, Matthew 12:7 (Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6, thematically continuous with this indictment). | High: 认识神 must render identically at every “knowledge of God” occurrence across the book (4:1, 6; 5:4; 6:3, 6; 11:3; 13:4). |
| Hosea 4:9 (“like people, like priest”) | Shared culpability of leaders and people | Priests | OT: Leviticus 4:3 (a priest’s guilt implicates the people); Isaiah 24:2. | Low. |
| Hosea 4:13 (high places) | Illegitimate worship sites | — | OT: Deuteronomy 12:2-4 (command to destroy Canaanite high places); 1 Kings 12:31-32 (Jeroboam’s high places). | Medium: distinguish from any positive Daoist sacred-mountain veneration tradition (established in 07). |
Chapter 5
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 5:14-15 (lion; divine withdrawal) | God as judge, withdrawing his presence | God/YHWH; Ephraim | OT: Amos 3:8; Deuteronomy 31:17-18 (God hiding his face as covenant curse). Parallels Ezekiel 10:1-22, 11:22-23 (departure of God’s glory from the temple). | High: ironic role-reversal of the shuv motif — here God, not Israel, “returns” (withdraws). |
| Hosea 5:13 (seeking Assyria) | Misplaced trust in foreign power | Ephraim; Assyria | OT: Isaiah 30:1-3 (woe to those who seek Egypt’s help instead of the LORD); 2 Kings 15:19 (historical Assyrian tribute). | Medium. |
Chapter 6
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 6:1-3 (“come, let us return”) | Superficial repentance formula | Israel (self-voiced) | OT: Deuteronomy 30:1-3 (covenant-return promise); Joel 2:12-13 (a genuine repentance call, contrasting this shallow one). | High: same 归向 rendering required (per the shuv consistency rule), even though this instance is exposed as shallow — the irony is carried by teaching notes and by 6:4’s critique, not by a different verb. |
| Hosea 6:2 (“on the third day he will raise us up”) | National-restoration language echoing resurrection | Israel | NT: 1 Corinthians 15:4 (“raised on the third day according to the Scriptures”); Luke 24:46; Jonah 1:17 / Matthew 12:40 (“the sign of Jonah,” three days and three nights). | Critical typological caution. Teach as canonical resonance, not a direct one-to-one prophecy; do not conflate Hosea’s national restoration language with Christ’s individual bodily resurrection (Romans curriculum’s Critical “Resurrection of Christ” doctrine). |
| Hosea 6:6 (“I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice”) | Covenant mercy prioritized over ritual | God/YHWH | OT: 1 Samuel 15:22; Psalm 40:6-8; Psalm 51:16-17; Micah 6:6-8; Amos 5:21-24. NT: Matthew 9:13 and Matthew 12:7 (Jesus quotes this verse twice) — one of the most NT-load-bearing quotations from the Minor Prophets. | Critical. See Rendering-Consistency Rule R2 (Part 3). 慈爱 here must match every other chesed occurrence in Hosea and should be checked against the Mandarin Gospel-curriculum rendering of Matthew 9:13/12:7’s quotation. |
Chapter 7
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 7:8 (cake not turned) | Half-hearted syncretism | Ephraim | OT: none direct; wisdom-idiom style, cf. domestic imagery in Proverbs. | Low. |
| Hosea 7:11 (silly dove between Egypt and Assyria) | Foreign-policy vacillation | Ephraim | OT: 2 Kings 17:4 (historical shifting alliances); contrast Psalm 55:6 (differently valenced dove image, longed-for escape). | Medium. |
| Hosea 7:13, 16 (“they return, but not to the Most High”) | Ironic use of shuv — physical motion without relational return | Israel | Thematically parallel to Hosea 11:5, 7. | High: consistent 归回/归向 distinction required. |
Chapter 8
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 8:5-6 (calf of Samaria) | Idolatry recalling the golden calf | Samaria; Ephraim | OT: Exodus 32:1-8 (the golden calf at Sinai); 1 Kings 12:28-29 (Jeroboam’s calves at Bethel and Dan). | High: specific historical idol-type; cultural-sensitivity note for veneration gestures (established in 07). |
| Hosea 8:7 (“sow the wind, reap the whirlwind”) | Disproportionate, self-inflicted judgment | Ephraim | OT: Job 4:8; Proverbs 22:8. NT: Galatians 6:7-8 (“whatever one sows, that will he also reap”) — a direct proverbial/thematic parallel within this language package’s broader curriculum tag list. | Medium: must not collapse into a generic karmic cause-and-effect reading divorced from the personal covenant God who executes this judgment; flag Galatians 6:7-8 parallel for future cross-curriculum teaching notes. |
| Hosea 8:13 (“they shall return to Egypt”) | Covenant-curse reversal of the Exodus | Israel | OT: Deuteronomy 28:68 (“the LORD will bring you back to Egypt”); Deuteronomy 17:16. | High: physical-return sense (归回), distinct from relational 归向. |
Chapter 9
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 9:10 (Baal-peor) | Historical apostasy precedent | Israel (wilderness generation) | OT: Numbers 25:1-9 (Baal-peor apostasy and Phinehas’s zeal); Psalm 106:28-31. | Medium (established). |
| Hosea 9:9 (“the days of Gibeah”) | Historical atrocity precedent | — | OT: Judges 19:1–20:48 (the outrage at Gibeah and the ensuing civil war). | Medium. |
| Hosea 9:1-6 (exile from harvest-sites) | Loss of covenant blessing | Ephraim | OT: Leviticus 26:33 (covenant curse of scattering among the nations); Deuteronomy 28:33. | Low. |
Chapter 10
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 10:1 (luxuriant vine) | Prosperity misused for greater apostasy | Israel | OT: Psalm 80:8-16 (Israel as a vine brought from Egypt); Isaiah 5:1-7 (the vineyard song, an unfruitful vine judged). NT: John 15:1-8 (Jesus as the true vine) — a significant typological contrast between Israel’s corrupted vine and Christ’s true, fruitful vine. | Medium: recommend a teaching note connecting to John 15 for learners studying Gospel curricula in this language package. |
| Hosea 10:8 (“fall on us”) | Despair before judgment | Israel | NT: Luke 23:30 (crowds at the crucifixion echo this cry); Revelation 6:16 (those fleeing the wrath of the Lamb). | Medium: cross-reference for future Luke/Revelation curricula in this language package. |
| Hosea 10:12 (“sow righteousness, reap steadfast love”) | Positive counter-proverb to Hosea 8:7 | Israel | NT: Galatians 6:8-9 (sowing to the Spirit reaps eternal life) — thematic parallel, not a direct quotation. | Critical: 义/慈爱 pairing consistency required (see 08). |
Chapter 11 — Core Passage
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 11:1 (“out of Egypt I called my son”) | Corporate national sonship, later recapitulated typologically in Christ | Israel (corporate); typologically, Jesus | NT: Matthew 2:15 (Matthew explicitly quotes this verse of the infant Jesus’s return from Egypt) — the central messianic-typology cross-reference of the entire book. | Critical. See Rendering-Consistency Rule R3 (Part 3). 儿子 (corporate sonship) must remain lexically and doctrinally distinct from 神的儿子 (Son of God, Christological), even though Matthew applies the pattern typologically to Christ. Translator note mandatory wherever this verse is taught alongside Matthew 2:15. |
| Hosea 11:8 (Admah, Zeboiim) | Judgment averted by compassion | Ephraim | OT: Genesis 14:2; Genesis 19:24-25 (destruction of Sodom, Gomorrah, and the plain, including Admah and Zeboiim); Deuteronomy 29:23. | Proper nouns Low risk; the theological point (judgment of Sodom-level severity averted) is High — load-bearing for “Judgment and Compassion Held Together.” |
| Hosea 11:9 (“I am God and not man”) | Divine constancy underwriting compassion | God/YHWH | OT: Numbers 23:19 (“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind”) — a direct conceptual and near-verbal echo; Malachi 3:6 (“I the LORD do not change”). | Critical. Theological center of the divine-constancy doctrine; must not be softened toward “God is like a very good man.” |
| Hosea 11:9 (“the Holy One in your midst”) | Transcendent holiness | God/YHWH | OT: Isaiah 12:6; Isaiah 41:14 (“the Holy One of Israel”); Leviticus 11:44-45 (“be holy, for I am holy”). | High: 圣者 vs. 圣人 distinction (established in 08). |
| Hosea 11:10-11 (lion roar; doves returning) | Restoration and homecoming | Israel (exiles) | OT: Joel 3:16 (the LORD roars from Zion); Amos 1:2; Isaiah 60:8 (“who are these that fly like a cloud, like doves to their windows”). | Medium: dual-valence lion/dove images already flagged in 08. |
Chapter 12
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 12:2-4, 12 (Jacob) | Ancestral moral exemplar and warning | Jacob | OT: Genesis 25:26 (Jacob’s birth); Genesis 28:10-19 (Bethel vision); Genesis 32:22-32 (wrestling at Peniel); Genesis 35:9-15. | Medium: requires OT narrative background for Jacob’s wrestling and Bethel encounter to register. |
| Hosea 12:7-8 (Canaan/trader; false balances) | Commercial dishonesty as a covenant symptom | Ephraim | OT: Leviticus 19:35-36; Deuteronomy 25:13-15; Proverbs 11:1, 20:23; Amos 8:5; Ezekiel 16:29 (Canaan/trader imagery); Zephaniah 1:11. | Low. |
| Hosea 12:9 (“I am the LORD your God from the land of Egypt”) | Exodus self-identification formula | God/YHWH | OT: Exodus 20:2 (preamble to the Ten Commandments); recurs at Hosea 13:4. | High: this recurring covenant-memory formula must render consistently across both occurrences. |
Chapter 13
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 13:4 (“no savior besides me”) | Exclusive-savior claim | God/YHWH | OT: Exodus 20:2-3 (no other gods); Isaiah 43:11 (“besides me there is no savior”). | Critical: directly reinforces the exclusivity of 救恩 (salvation, baseline Critical term) — forecloses any syncretistic reading. |
| Hosea 13:2 (calf-kissing) | Idol-veneration gesture | Ephraim | OT: 1 Kings 19:18 (“every mouth that has not kissed him,” referring to Baal). | High: cultural-sensitivity note (established). |
| Hosea 13:7-8 (lion, leopard, bear) | Ferocity of divine judgment | God/YHWH | OT: Amos 5:19; Lamentations 3:10 (God as a lurking bear/lion); later apocalyptic development in Daniel 7’s composite-beast imagery. | Medium. |
| Hosea 13:14 (“O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting?”) | Resurrection-hope victory cry | God/YHWH; Israel | NT: 1 Corinthians 15:55 (Paul directly quotes this verse as the climax of his resurrection chapter) — the second most important direct NT quotation of Hosea. | Critical. See Rendering-Consistency Rule R4 (Part 3). 阴间/死亡/救赎 must align with the Mandarin rendering used for 1 Corinthians 15:55 in that curriculum; baseline forbidden substitutions (解脱, 超度) apply with full force. |
Chapter 14
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|
| Hosea 14:1-3 (“Return, O Israel… take with you words”) | Climactic call to genuine repentance | Israel | OT: Deuteronomy 30:1-3; Joel 2:12-13; Isaiah 55:6-7; Jeremiah 3:22 (“Return, O faithless sons, I will heal your faithlessness”) — an extremely close verbal and thematic parallel to Hosea 14:4. | Critical: 归向 must be identical to every prior relational-shuv occurrence (established in 08); flag the Jeremiah 3:22 parallel as a close intertextual echo worth teaching alongside this passage. |
| Hosea 14:4 (“I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely”) | Grace and mercy given without merit | God/YHWH | OT: Jeremiah 3:22; Isaiah 57:18 (“I have seen his ways, and I will heal him”). NT: thematically parallel to Romans 5:8 (“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”) and Romans 11:5-6 (grace apart from works). | Critical cross-curriculum link. See Rendering-Consistency Rule R5 (Part 3). |
| Hosea 14:5-8 (dew, olive, lily, cedar) | Flourishing restored covenant life | Israel | OT: Psalm 92:12-14 (the righteous flourish like the palm/cedar); Isaiah 35:1-2 (the desert blossoms); Song of Songs floral/fragrance imagery; Psalm 1:3. | Low/Medium. |
| Hosea 14:8 (“What have I to do with idols?”) | Voluntary rejection of idolatry | Ephraim (self-voiced) | OT: Isaiah 2:20; Isaiah 30:22 (casting away idols). NT: 1 Thessalonians 1:9 (“turned to God from idols”). | Medium. |
| Hosea 14:9 (“the ways of the LORD are right”) | Closing wisdom epilogue | — | OT: Deuteronomy 32:4 (“he is the Rock… just and upright”); Psalm 1; Psalm 25:8-10; Proverbs 10:29. | High: 道 here means “way/path” (ethical-relational) and must not be conflated with 道成肉身 (Incarnation, Christological Critical term) despite sharing the character 道 (established in 07). |
PART 2 — Messianic References and Typology Summary
| # | Hosea Reference | Typological Pattern | NT Fulfillment/Development | Doctrinal Note |
|---|
| T1 | Hosea 11:1 | Corporate national sonship (Israel called out of Egypt) | Matthew 2:15 (the infant Jesus’s exodus from Egypt recapitulates and fulfills the pattern of Israel’s own founding “sonship” story) | Typological, not predictive-literal; the corporate referent in Hosea must never be collapsed into or confused with the unique, eternal, co-equal Sonship of Christ (神的儿子, Critical baseline term). |
| T2 | Hosea 3:5 (“David their king”) | Renewed Davidic kingship after judgment | Romans 1:3; Luke 1:32-33 | Anchors Hosea within the larger canonical Davidic-covenant/messianic-promise trajectory shared with the Romans curriculum (both Critical/High doctrines there). |
| T3 | Hosea 6:2 (“on the third day”) | National revival/restoration language | 1 Corinthians 15:4; Luke 24:46; Jonah 1:17/Matthew 12:40 | Canonical resonance only — teach as a pattern the NT resurrection later fulfills in a deeper, individual, bodily sense; avoid overclaiming direct prophecy. |
| T4 | Hosea 13:14 | Victory over Death and Sheol | 1 Corinthians 15:55 | Directly quoted by Paul as the triumphant climax of the resurrection chapter; must be taught in continuity with Christ’s literal, bodily resurrection (baseline Critical doctrine). |
| T5 | Hosea 1:2–3:5; 14:4-8 (the whole marriage metaphor) | God as covenant husband; God’s people as bride | Ephesians 5:25-32; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 19:7-9; Revelation 21:2, 9-27 | The marriage metaphor’s arc (estrangement → redemption → renewed betrothal) is developed to its fullest NT expression in the Church as Christ’s bride; Hosea supplies the Old Testament’s most extended treatment of this image. |
| T6 | Hosea 1:10; 2:23 | Repudiated covenant people restored and multiplied | Romans 9:25-26; 1 Peter 2:10 | The most direct apostolic use of Hosea in the NT; grounds the doctrine of Gentile inclusion in God’s people — see Rule R1. |
| T7 | Hosea 14:4 | Freely given, unmerited restorative love | Romans 5:8; Romans 11:5-6; Ephesians 2:8-9 | Thematic (not lexical) parallel; both texts function as the clearest statement in their respective books that grace precedes and is not conditioned on merit. |
PART 3 — Cross-Curriculum Parallels and Rendering-Consistency Rules
Because this language package’s tag list spans Romans and numerous other New Testament books (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1–2 Thessalonians, 1–2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1–2 Peter, 1–3 John, Jude, Revelation), and Hosea is directly quoted by three of these (Matthew, Romans, 1 Corinthians, 1 Peter), the following consistency rules govern any shared quotation or shared doctrinal vocabulary. These rules extend — and never contradict — the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents” (see 12_ai_translation_requirements.md).
| Rule ID | Hosea Citation | NT Citation(s) | Shared Term/Concept | Required Mandarin Consistency | Enforcement Note |
|---|
| R1 | Hosea 1:10; Hosea 2:23 | Romans 9:25-26; 1 Peter 2:10 | ”sons of the living God” / “my people” / “not my people” | 活神的儿子 (sons of the living God); 我的百姓 (my people); 非我民 (not my people) | Paul quotes both Hosea verses together in Romans 9:25-26 as his scriptural proof for Gentile inclusion. The Mandarin rendering used when Romans 9:25-26 is translated MUST match the rendering established here for Hosea 1:10/2:23 exactly, or the reader will not recognize Paul’s quotation as a quotation. Critical priority. |
| R2 | Hosea 6:6 | Matthew 9:13; Matthew 12:7 | ”steadfast love [chesed], not sacrifice” | 慈爱 (chesed) held constant; 祭祀/献祭 (sacrifice) held constant | Jesus quotes this verse twice. 慈爱 must match its use at Hosea 2:19-20, 4:1, 10:12, 12:6, 14:4 AND whatever Mandarin Gospel-curriculum rendering is used for Matthew 9:13/12:7’s quotation of it. Critical priority — this is Hosea’s single most NT-quoted verse. |
| R3 | Hosea 11:1 | Matthew 2:15 | ”out of Egypt I called my/his son” | 儿子 (corporate/typological sonship in Hosea) explicitly distinguished from 神的儿子 (Son of God, Christological, used when Matthew 2:15 is discussed) | Matthew’s typological application of Hosea 11:1 to Christ must never be presented as though “son” in Hosea originally meant the eternal divine Son; a translator note is mandatory in any teaching material that places these two citations side by side. |
| R4 | Hosea 13:14 | 1 Corinthians 15:55 | ”O Death, where is your sting? O Sheol/grave, where is your victory?” | 死亡 (Death); 阴间 (Sheol/grave) — never 解脱 or 超度 in either curriculum | Paul’s triumphant quotation depends on the reader recognizing the same “Death/Sheol” vocabulary from Hosea. Both curricula’s translation memories must record identical Mandarin terms for this pairing. Critical priority. |
| R5 | Hosea 14:4 | Romans 5:8; Romans 11:5-6; Ephesians 2:8-9 | Grace/love given prior to and apart from merit | 恩典 (grace, Romans-side Critical term) taught in explicit parallel with 甘心爱他们 (Hosea 14:4’s “loved them freely”) | Not a shared lexical quotation but a shared doctrinal argument; teaching materials for either curriculum should cross-reference the other as a canonical双证 (twin witness) to grace preceding merit — reinforcing, never diluting, the baseline’s Buddhist-merit-accounting caution (功德/阴德). |
| R6 | Hosea 3:5 | Romans 1:3 | ”David”/“seed of David” | 大卫 (David) — baseline proper-name form reused exactly | Both curricula ground Messiah’s legitimacy in the unconditional Davidic covenant; consistent proper-name use across curricula supports learners’ ability to trace this connection. |
| R7 | Hosea 2:19-20; Hosea 10:12; Hosea 12:6 | Romans 3:21-26; Romans 4:1-25 (the baseline’s “righteousness”/“justification” doctrine cluster) | 义 (righteousness) | 义 rendering identical; Confucian-virtue caution note required in both curricula wherever 义 appears in a covenant or justification context | Hosea’s pairing of 义 with 慈爱 (chesed) as covenant-constituting gifts (not achieved virtues) reinforces, rather than duplicates, the Romans curriculum’s existing Critical-risk note on 义 — teach the two books’ uses as mutually reinforcing, not redundant. |
| R8 | Hosea 1–3; Hosea 9–11 (the whole restoration arc for Israel and, implicitly, the nations) | Romans 9–11 (“Unity of Jews and Gentiles,” High-risk baseline doctrine) | God’s faithfulness to Israel despite unfaithfulness, extended to include the nations | Thematic consistency: 以色列 (Israel), 外邦人 (Gentiles) reused exactly per baseline | Romans 9–11 is Paul’s own extended argument built in part directly on Hosea’s language (see R1); this curriculum’s teaching materials should explicitly note that Hosea is one of Paul’s primary Old Testament source texts for this section of Romans, not merely a loosely thematic parallel. |
Citation Normalization Note
All cross-references in this document and in downstream Phase 2 artifacts must use the format Book Chapter:Verse (e.g., Hosea 11:1, Matthew 2:15, Romans 9:25-26) in English for internal tooling and cross-reference indexing, regardless of the destination-language citation format used in the rendered Mandarin text itself (which follows the baseline’s 罗马书3:23-style convention per 12_ai_translation_requirements.md). Phase 2 rendering must map every normalized citation in this document to its correct Mandarin book-name form using the baseline’s established CUV book-name table, extended as needed with 何西阿书 (Hosea) as the standard CUV form for this curriculum’s own book.
This document feeds 10_biblical_theme_map.md and subsequent Phase 1 doctrine-risk and translation-memory formalization steps for the Hosea curriculum.
