Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Nehemiah (Mandarin Language Package Extension)
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 (doctrine identification and risk assignment) for the full book of Nehemiah, chapters 1–13, extending the baseline Romans doctrine framework. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 18 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing are used throughout. The core passage, Nehemiah 8:1-12, anchors the curriculum theologically but does not limit analytical scope — every chapter of the book is reviewed below.
Part A: Doctrine Matrix (Full Book)
| # | Doctrine | Mandarin Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages (Nehemiah) | Risk | Key Terms | Translation Risk Notes | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Divine Name (YHWH) and God’s Providence | 耶和华之名与神的护理 | 1:5; 2:4, 8, 20; 9:5-6 | Critical | LORD/耶和华, God of heaven/天上的神, hand of God/神的手 | Must never collapse 耶和华 into generic 神, nor into impersonal 天/天意/天命 (Mandate-of-Heaven fatalism, already flagged in baseline). Loss of the personal covenant name flattens Nehemiah’s God into an impersonal cosmic force. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership | 祷告与倚靠神的领导 | 1:4-11; 2:4-5; 4:4-5, 9; 5:19; 6:9, 14; 13:14, 22, 29, 31 | High | prayer/祷告, fasting/禁食, remember/记念, favor/恩宠, servant/仆人 | 记念 has a critical homophone trap with 纪念 (commemorate ancestors/monuments) — same sound, different character and theology. 祷告 must stay distinct from folk 祈福/求签/问卜. | Human theologian |
| 3 | The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed | 神的话被诵读、明白并遵行 | 8:1-8, 12-18; 9:3 | High | assembly/会众, read/朗读, understand/明白, teach/教导讲解, written/写着 | 明白 must not read as Buddhist 领悟/悟 (sudden enlightenment); 会众 must not assimilate to 法会 (dharma assembly). This is the core-passage doctrine (Neh 8:1-12) and requires the highest translation fidelity in the book. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Confession of Sin | 认罪 | 1:6-7; 9:2-3, 16-35 | High | confession/认罪, sin/罪, stiff-necked/硬着颈项 | 认罪 must not resonate with coerced political self-criticism (检讨) under a state tribunal; this is voluntary confession before a personal God. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Confession and Covenant Renewal (Grace and Mercy) | 认罪与立约的更新(恩典与怜悯) | 9:8, 17, 19, 31-32; 10:28-29; 10:1-39 | Critical | covenant/约, gracious/有恩典的, steadfast love/慈爱, merciful/怜悯, forgive/赦免 | Strongest OT parallel to baseline’s grace-vs-merit warning. 慈爱/怜悯 must never render as Buddhist 慈悲; 赦免 must never suggest karmic debt-cancellation. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration of God’s People | 重建城墙为神子民的复兴 | 1:3; 2:17-18; 3:1-32; 6:15-16; 7:1-4; 11:1-36; 12:27-43 | Medium | wall/城墙, gate/城门, build-rebuild/建造重建, holy city/圣城, register-genealogy/族谱 | Plain vocabulary but heavy symbolic freight (corporate identity, security under God) must be actively taught, not left as mere engineering detail. 族谱 must be qualified against ancestor-veneration/clan-inheritance resonance. | Native speaker review |
| 7 | Priesthood and the Teaching Office | 祭司职分与教导的职分 | 8:1-9; 12:1-26, 44-47 | High | priest/祭司, Levite/利未人, scribe/文士 | 祭司 risks assimilation to folk ritual specialists/mediums (巫); every occurrence must be framed as the Mosaic covenant office serving the one true God. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Exclusive Worship of the LORD | 唯独敬拜耶和华 | 8:6; 9:3, 6 | High | worship (prostrate)/敬拜, bless-praise/称颂 | Lifted hands and bowed faces risk visual/conceptual collapse into ancestor veneration (磕头) or idol worship (拜偶像); must retain exclusivity directed at YHWH alone. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Calendrical Holiness and Sabbath Observance | 日子的圣洁与安息日的遵守 | 8:9-11; 9:14; 10:31; 13:15-22 | High | holy (of a day)/圣洁·圣日, Sabbath/安息日, Feast of Booths/住棚节 | Extends baseline’s person-focused 圣洁 to time; avoid 清净 (Daoist/Buddhist ritual stillness). 安息日 must not flatten into generic 休息日 or merit-linked observance. | Human theologian |
| 10 | The Joy of the Lord as Strength | 耶和华的喜乐是力量 | 8:9-12, 17; 12:43 | High | joy of the LORD/耶和华的喜乐, strength/力量, grieved/忧愁, mourn-weep/哀哭哭泣 | Theological capstone of the core passage. Never generic 快乐 or any 福-rooted phrase; never render strength as 气 (vital-energy/qigong). Must consistently use 耶和华, not generic 神. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Opposition and Perseverance in God’s Work | 工作中的敌对与坚忍 | 2:19-20; 4:1-23; 6:1-14 | High | enemies/敌人, mock-despise/嘲笑藐视, conspire/同谋, guard-watch/看守, fight/争战, slander-rumor/谣言毁谤 | 敌人 must not soften to 对手 (neutral rival); 争战 must avoid martial-arts/qigong combat-mysticism resonance — God himself fights for his people, not an esoteric technique. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Internal Covenant Justice | 立约群体内部的公义 | 5:1-13, 15 | High | fear of God/敬畏神, redeem (kinship)/赎回, interest-usury/利息, nobles-officials/贵胄官长 | 敬畏神 must be distinguished from superstitious fear of ghosts/spirits (怕鬼神). 赎回 must be distinguished from baseline’s 救恩 (salvation) and from merit-generating 放生 (life-release). | Human theologian |
| 13 | Dedication of the Wall and Credit to God | 城墙的奉献与归功于神 | 6:16; 12:27-30, 43 | High | dedication/奉献·献殿礼, purify/洁净 | 奉献 must avoid resonance with 功德圆满 (Buddhist “merit perfected”). Neh 6:16 explicitly credits God, not human achievement, with the completed work. | Human theologian |
Direct tension with baseline’s Unity of Jews/Gentiles and Universal Scope of the Gospel doctrines; must explicitly distinguish Nehemiah’s post-exilic covenant-purity concern from NT fulfillment in Christ, where ethnicity is no longer the boundary marker. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Tithing and Provision for Corporate Worship | 十一奉献与敬拜的供应 | 10:32-39; 12:44-47; 13:10-13 | Medium | tithe/十分之一·十一奉献 | Must not be framed as a merit-earning transaction paralleling 功德; grateful obedience flowing from renewed covenant relationship. | Native speaker review |
| 16 | Genealogical Registration and Covenant Membership | 家谱登记与立约群体的身份 | 7:5-65; 11:3-36; 13:3 | Medium | register-genealogy/族谱 | 族谱 carries strong Chinese ancestor-veneration/inheritance associations; must be qualified as covenant-identity verification and priestly purity, not ancestor-ritual lineage maintenance. | Native speaker review |
| 17 | False Prophecy as a Counterfeit Form of Opposition | 假先知作为敌对的伪装 | 6:10-14 | Medium | false prophet/假先知, slander-rumor/谣言毁谤 | 假先知 qualifier must be applied carefully so the genuine prophetic office (Low risk per baseline) is not implicated; Noadiah’s abuse of a legitimate office is the point, not evidence against the office itself. | Native speaker review |
| 18 | Thanksgiving and Corporate Praise | 感恩与会众的赞美 | 12:27, 31, 46 | Low | thanksgiving/感恩, bless-praise/称颂, great joy/大喜乐 | Standard, established baseline vocabulary. Minor risk of generic secular gratitude without explicit reference to God. | Automated review |
Risk Summary (matches doctrine_risk_registry.json exactly): Critical: 2 · High: 11 · Medium: 4 · Low: 1 · Total: 18 doctrines · 13 requiring theologian review · 4 requiring native speaker review · 1 automated-only.

Part C: Notes on Consistency with doctrine_risk_registry.json
- All 18 doctrine entries, names, Mandarin doctrine names, risk tiers, and review routings in Part A are copied verbatim in substance from the registry; no tier has been altered.
- No new doctrine has been introduced beyond the registry’s 18 entries; this document is an expository expansion (chapter mapping, full-book coverage confirmation) of the same risk framework, not a competing analysis.
- The registry’s
risk_summarytotals (Critical 2, High 11, Medium 4, Low 1) are reproduced and confirmed unchanged in Part A.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Divine Name (YHWH) and God’s Providence
Mandarin name: 耶和华之名与神的护理
Key terms: LORD, YHWH, God of heaven, hand of God
Review routing: Human theologian
Nehemiah uses the personal covenant name יהוה far more densely than Romans uses any single divine title. Must consistently render as 耶和华, never collapsed into the generic 神 nor into impersonal ‘天’/天意/天命 (Mandate-of-Heaven fatalistic language, already Critical/High in the baseline). Loss of this distinction throughout the book would flatten a personal, covenant-keeping God into an impersonal cosmic force, directly undermining the ‘Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership’ doctrine’s premise that Nehemiah petitions a personal God who acts in history.
Confession and Covenant Renewal (Grace and Mercy)
Mandarin name: 认罪与立约的更新(恩典与怜悯)
Key terms: covenant, gracious, steadfast love, merciful/compassionate, forgive
Review routing: Human theologian
Reinforces the baseline’s Critical grace-versus-merit warning: Israel’s recited history of covenant-breaking met with undeserved divine favor is the strongest Old Testament parallel to the baseline’s contrast with 功德/阴德 (Buddhist merit-ledger concepts). 慈爱 and 怜悯 must never be rendered 慈悲 (Buddhist universal compassion); 赦免 must never suggest karmic debt-cancellation. A mistranslation here would convert covenant grace into an earned, merit-accounted outcome, destroying the doctrine’s core claim.
High Risk Doctrines
Prayer and Dependence on God in Leadership
Mandarin name: 祷告与倚靠神的领导
Key terms: prayer, fasting, remember, favor, hand of God, servant
Review routing: Human theologian
祷告 must be kept distinct from folk fortune-prayer (祈福) and divination practices (求签/问卜), already flagged under the baseline’s intercession note, so that Nehemiah’s leadership pattern reads as dependence on a personal God rather than fortune-seeking. The recurring appeal 记念 (‘remember me’) carries a critical homophone trap with 纪念 (commemorate ancestors/monuments) — same pronunciation, different character and theology — which could silently convert covenant prayer into ancestor-commemoration language if mistranscribed.
The Word of God Read, Understood, and Obeyed
Mandarin name: 神的话被诵读、明白并遵行
Key terms: assembly, law, priest, scribe, read, understand, teach/explain, written
Review routing: Human theologian
明白 must be kept distinct from 领悟/悟, Chinese Buddhist vocabulary for sudden spiritual enlightenment, so that understanding the Law reads as plain intelligible comprehension rather than mystical insight. 祭司 risks assimilation to folk ritual specialists or shamanic mediums (巫); 会众 risks assimilation to the Buddhist 法会 (‘dharma assembly’) genre. Every occurrence in this core-passage doctrine requires framing that anchors reading, teaching, and obedience to the Mosaic covenant office and the one true God, not a generic religious-instruction genre.
Confession of Sin
Mandarin name: 认罪
Key terms: confession, sin, stiff-necked
Review routing: Human theologian
认罪 must be distinguished from coerced political/judicial ‘confession’ (show-trial self-criticism, 检讨/认罪) extracted under duress before a state authority — a resonance risk specific to modern Mandarin political vocabulary. Biblical confession here is voluntary, addressed to God, and the doorway to restored covenant relationship, not punitive self-abasement before a human tribunal.
Priesthood and the Teaching Office
Mandarin name: 祭司职分与教导的职分
Key terms: priest, Levite, scribe
Review routing: Human theologian
祭司 risks assimilation to folk ritual specialists or mediums (巫) who mediate between worshippers and local deities/ancestors, or to generic polytheistic sacrificial functionaries. Every occurrence must be framed explicitly as the Mosaic covenant office serving the one true God, distinct from any folk-religious ritual-specialist role familiar to Chinese readers.
Exclusive Worship of the LORD
Mandarin name: 唯独敬拜耶和华
Key terms: worship (prostrate), bless/praise
Review routing: Human theologian
The physical description of hands lifted and faces bowed to the ground risks visual and conceptual collapse into ancestor veneration (祭拜祖先, 磕头) or idol worship (拜偶像) familiar to Chinese readers. 敬拜 and 俯伏 must retain the text’s insistence on exclusive worship directed at YHWH alone, not a generic reverence-gesture vocabulary shared with folk ritual.
Calendrical Holiness and Sabbath Observance
Mandarin name: 日子的圣洁与安息日的遵守
Key terms: holy (of a day), Sabbath, Feast of Booths
Review routing: Human theologian
Extends the baseline’s High-risk 圣洁 entry from persons to time; must avoid 清净 (Daoist/Buddhist ritual-stillness purity). 安息日 must retain its full covenant-sign weight, distinct from a generic 休息日 (‘rest day’) and from Buddhist/Daoist merit-linked observance days, so that Sabbath-keeping reads as covenant fidelity rather than ritual self-purification.
The Joy of the Lord as Strength
Mandarin name: 耶和华的喜乐是力量
Key terms: joy of the LORD, strength, grieved, mourn/weep, great joy
Review routing: Human theologian
喜乐 must never be rendered with the generic/secular 快乐 or any phrase built on the 福 root (the fortune-language field flagged under the baseline gospel note), which would reframe this joy as good luck or a favorable omen. 力量 must never be rendered 气 (vital life-energy of Chinese medicine/qigong/martial-arts cosmology), per the baseline’s power-of-God warning. This doctrine is the theological capstone of the core passage and must consistently use 耶和华, not the generic 神.
Opposition and Perseverance in God’s Work
Mandarin name: 工作中的敌对与坚忍
Key terms: enemies, mock/despise, conspire, guard/watch, fight, slander/rumor, false prophet
Review routing: Human theologian
敌人 must not be softened to 对手 (‘rival/competitor’ in a neutral contest), which would lose the spiritually serious, hostile character of opposition to God’s work. 争战 risks resonance with martial-arts/qigong-linked combat mysticism if rendered loosely; the text’s confidence that God himself fights for his people must be preserved as personal divine defense, not an esoteric power available through technique.
Internal Covenant Justice
Mandarin name: 立约群体内部的公义
Key terms: fear of God, redeem (kinship), interest/usury, nobles/officials
Review routing: Human theologian
敬畏神 must be distinguished from generic superstitious fear of ghosts/spirits (怕鬼神) in folk religion; this is a positive ethical category producing righteous conduct before the personal covenant God. 赎回 must be distinguished from the baseline’s theological 救恩 (salvation) and from Buddhist merit-generating ‘life-release’ practice (放生); this is a concrete, this-worldly, kinship-based debt-transaction, not a ritual act of spiritual merit.
Dedication of the Wall and Credit to God
Mandarin name: 城墙的奉献与归功于神
Key terms: dedication, purify
Review routing: Human theologian
奉献/献殿礼 must avoid resonance with 功德圆满 (‘merit perfected/completed,’ a Buddhist phrase marking the successful completion of a merit-generating ritual or project). The narrative explicitly credits God, not human merit or achievement, with accomplishing the work (Nehemiah 6:16); a mistranslation here would silently convert the completed project into a human merit-accomplishment narrative.
Covenant Purity and Ethnic Separation
Mandarin name: 立约群体的纯洁与民族的分别
Key terms: separate/exclude, register/genealogy
Review routing: Human theologian
MANDATORY THEOLOGIAN REVIEW: 分别/分离 sits in direct tension with the Romans-derived doctrines of the Unity of Jews and Gentiles and the Universal Scope of the Gospel already documented as High risk in the baseline, which explicitly warn against reintroducing the classical Hua-Yi (华夷) civilized-insider/outsider hierarchy. Teaching materials must explicitly distinguish Nehemiah’s specific post-exilic covenant-purity concern (guarding against a return to the idolatry that caused the exile) from the New Testament’s fulfillment in Christ, in which ethnicity is no longer the boundary marker of God’s people. This is a cross-canonical theological-pedagogical tension point, not a purely lexical one.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Rebuilding the Wall as Restoration of God’s People
Mandarin name: 重建城墙为神子民的复兴
Key terms: wall, gate, build/rebuild, holy city, register/genealogy
Review routing: Native speaker review
城墙 and 城门 are plain, non-collision-prone vocabulary, but carry heavy symbolic freight that must be actively drawn out in teaching (corporate identity and security under God), not merely rendered as an engineering detail. 族谱 carries ancestor-veneration/clan-inheritance associations in Chinese culture and must be qualified as a covenant-identity and priestly-purity record rather than a lineage document for ancestor ritual.
Tithing and Provision for Corporate Worship
Mandarin name: 十一奉献与敬拜的供应
Key terms: tithe
Review routing: Native speaker review
十分之一/十一奉献 must not be framed as a merit-earning transaction paralleling 功德; the covenant commitment is grateful obedience flowing from renewed covenant relationship, echoing the baseline’s grace-versus-merit contrast without introducing a new lexical collision.
Genealogical Registration and Covenant Membership
Mandarin name: 家谱登记与立约群体的身份
Key terms: register/genealogy
Review routing: Native speaker review
族谱 carries strong Chinese cultural associations with clan lineage records maintained for ancestor veneration and inheritance; must be qualified in teaching as serving covenant-identity verification and priestly purity before the LORD, not ancestor-ritual lineage maintenance.
False Prophecy as a Counterfeit Form of Opposition
Mandarin name: 假先知作为敌对的伪装
Key terms: false prophet, slander/rumor
Review routing: Native speaker review
先知 itself is Low risk per the baseline, but the qualifier 假先知 (‘false prophet’) must be applied carefully so that readers do not conclude the prophetic office itself is inherently suspect; Noadiah’s corruption of a genuine covenant office for opposition’s purposes must be framed as an abuse of a legitimate office, not evidence against it.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving and Corporate Praise
Mandarin name: 感恩与会众的赞美
Key terms: thanksgiving, bless/praise, great joy
Review routing: Automated review
感恩 is standard, established vocabulary reused from the baseline; minor risk of generic secular gratitude without explicit reference to God, easily corrected by context.
