Doctrine Analysis

11 — Doctrine Analysis: Revelation

A. Purpose and Method

This document maps every doctrine tracked for the Revelation curriculum against every chapter of the book (1–22), establishing full-book coverage while keeping the core passage (Revelation 21:1–8) as the theological anchor rather than the scope boundary. Risk tiers, doctrine names, and Mandarin doctrine names are identical to assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and must not be altered independently of that file. Where a chapter’s content is a continuation of a doctrine already fully treated in an earlier chapter, this is stated explicitly rather than left silent, per the PRD Phase 1 mandate.

Risk tier legend (identical to baseline and registry):

  • Critical — mistranslation alters or destroys essential doctrine; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
  • High — mistranslation creates significant theological confusion or syncretism risk; human theologian review required.
  • Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves essential meaning; native speaker review recommended.
  • Low — mistranslation causes minor misunderstanding or imprecision; automated review sufficient.

B. Doctrine Detail Matrix (15 Doctrines)

1. The Return and Reign of Christ

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 基督的再来与掌权
  • Risk level: Critical
  • Key terms: 主 (lord), 万王之王、万主之主 (king of kings and lord of lords), 我必快来 (coming soon), 一千年 (thousand years), 作王 (reign with Christ), 神的道 (Word of God title)
  • Supporting passages (full book): Revelation 1:7-8; 11:15-18; 19:11-16; 20:1-6; 22:7, 12, 20
  • Translation risk: 万王之王、万主之主 and 神的道 must never be flattened into a dynastic-succession framing (改朝换代) or an especially exalted 天子 (“Son of Heaven,” legitimated by a revocable Mandate of Heaven). Christ’s reign is categorically, not merely comparatively, supreme over every earthly throne — a distinction readers steeped in Chinese dynastic historiography may otherwise collapse into “the greatest emperor among emperors.”
  • Review routing: Human theologian

2. The Sovereignty of God over History

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 神掌管历史的主权
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 宝座 (throne), 全能者 (Almighty), 阿拉法,俄梅戛 / 首先的、末后的 (Alpha and Omega / First and Last), 印 / 封印 (seal of the scroll), 奥秘 (mystery), 无底坑 (abyss)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 1:8; 4:2-11; 5:1-14; 6:1-8:1; 9:1-11; 10:1-7; 16:17; 17:17; 21:6
  • Translation risk: 宝座 and 全能者 must be distinguished from impersonal fatalistic 天意 (“heaven’s intention”) and from the cyclical order-chaos-order pattern (治乱循环) of traditional Chinese historiography. God’s throne governs history purposively toward a specific, personal goal, not through a self-correcting impersonal cosmic mechanism.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

3. Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 在迫害中坚忍并忠心作见证
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 得胜 (overcome), 见证 (testimony), 患难 (tribulation), 两个见证人 (two witnesses), 生命的冠冕 (crown of life)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 1:9; 2:2-3, 10, 13, 19; 3:10; 6:9-11; 11:3-13; 12:11, 17; 13:10; 14:12-13
  • Translation risk: 得胜 must be taught as victory secured through union with the Lamb’s blood and the believer’s own faithful testimony (12:11), not self-generated heroic willpower nor an accumulating spiritual merit-ledger (功德) that could earn standing before God — the same anti-merit vigilance the baseline requires for grace applies here.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

4. Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 恶人受审判、圣徒得伸冤
  • Risk level: Critical
  • Key terms: 火湖 (lake of fire), 第二次的死 (second death), 白色的大宝座 (great white throne), 忿怒 (wrath), 生命册 (book of life), 收割 / 忿怒的酒醡 (harvest/winepress)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 6:10, 16-17; 14:9-11, 17-20; 16:1-21; 17:1-18:24; 19:11-21; 20:11-15; 21:8
  • Translation risk: 火湖 and 第二次的死 must be sharply distinguished from Buddhist hell-realms (地狱), which are temporary and cyclical within an ongoing rebirth system from which a soul may eventually be released through merit or the 超度 rite (already forbidden under the baseline “salvation” entry). This judgment is final, personal, and irreversible, rendered by the one true God through Christ — not an impersonal karmic ledger (功过簿/报应) worked off over time.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

5. The New Heaven and New Earth

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 新天新地
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 新天新地 (new heaven and new earth), 生命树 (tree of life), 生命泉的水 (water of life), 咒诅 (curse, removal of), 帐幕 / 同住 (tabernacle/dwell)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 21:1-8; 21:22-27; 22:1-5
  • Translation risk: 新天新地 must be taught as a final, non-repeating consummation of history, not one turn of an endless cosmic cycle as in the Buddhist kalpa (劫, world destruction-and-recreation) or Daoist cyclical cosmic renewal — a genuine risk since Chinese cosmological intuition frames “world renewal” as recurring rather than terminal.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

6. The Church as Bride of Christ

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 教会为基督的新妇
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 新妇 (bride), 羔羊的婚筵 (marriage supper of the Lamb), 圣城新耶路撒冷 (holy city, new Jerusalem)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 19:6-9; 21:2, 9-10; 22:17
  • Translation risk: 新妇 is a corporate, covenantal image deliberately contrasted with “the great prostitute” Babylon (chs. 17-18); it must not be flattened into ordinary Chinese wedding-custom expectations (dowry-exchange, face, family-alliance negotiation), which would obscure the exclusive, Christ-initiated, once-for-all covenant-fidelity sense of the image.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

7. Worship of the Lamb

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 敬拜羔羊
  • Risk level: Critical
  • Key terms: 羔羊 (Lamb), 敬拜 (worship), 配得 (worthy), 神和羔羊的宝座 (throne of God and Lamb), 不可敬拜天使 (angel-worship forbidden)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 4:8-11; 5:6-14; 7:9-12; 13:4, 8, 12, 15; 14:3-4; 15:3-4; 19:1-8; 22:1, 3, 8-9
  • Translation risk: 敬拜 must be sharply distinguished from the generic verb 拜, used broadly in Chinese folk practice for ancestor veneration (拜祖先) and multi-deity temple worship (拜神/拜佛). The Lamb receives worship identical to the Father’s, and the text itself dramatizes and forbids worship of angels — a direct, repeated internal safeguard against exactly the expanded veneration of a populated spirit-hierarchy common in Chinese folk religion.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

8. Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 象征与启示文学的解读原则
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 启示 (revelation/apocalypse), 指示 / 晓示 (signified), 六百六十六 (666), 十四万四千人 (144,000), 一千年 (thousand years)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 1:1, 20; 12:1-17 (symbolic figures); 13:1-18; 17:1-18; 20:1-6
  • Translation risk: Revelation’s symbols must be taught as God’s authoritative, Christ-centered disclosure of certain future realities, not a coded fortune-telling text to be “cracked” like the Chinese apocryphal-prophetic tradition of 谶纬 (chènwěi, dynastic-change prediction texts) or divinatory practices such as I Ching hexagram-reading (占卜/卦象) or numerology. This caution applies to every symbolic image in the book, especially its numbers.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

9. Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 神终必得胜恶者的确据
  • Risk level: Critical
  • Key terms: 龙 (dragon), 魔鬼 / 撒但 (devil/Satan), 古蛇 (ancient serpent), 兽 (beast), 假先知 (false prophet), 哈米吉多顿 (Armageddon), 歌革、玛各 (Gog and Magog)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 12:7-11; 16:16; 19:19-21; 20:1-3, 7-10
  • Translation risk: 龙 is China’s foremost auspicious cultural symbol — imperial authority, cosmic power, and Chinese national/ethnic self-identity (“descendants of the dragon,” 龙的传人) — yet here designates Satan, the wholly evil adversary who is decisively and finally defeated. This is the single most severe structural collision risk in the entire curriculum and requires sustained explicit doctrinal framing at every occurrence, never a single footnote.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

10. Deity of Christ

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 基督的神性
  • Risk level: Critical
  • Key terms: 羔羊 (Lamb), 神和羔羊的宝座 (throne of God and Lamb), 首先的、末后的 (first and last), 神的道 (Word of God title), 万王之王、万主之主 (King of kings, Lord of lords)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 1:17-18; 5:13-14; 19:13; 22:1, 3, 13
  • Translation risk: The shared, singular throne (神和羔羊的宝座 — grammatically one throne, not two) and worship identical to the Father’s are deliberate assertions of the Lamb’s co-equal, eternal deity. Must not be softened to “an exalted heavenly being” or a bodhisattva-like intermediary who assists but is not himself fully God — a real risk given Chinese religious culture’s rich vocabulary for exalted-but-created spiritual intermediaries.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

11. Spiritual Warfare and the Defeat of Satan

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 属灵争战与撒但的败亡
  • Risk level: Critical
  • Key terms: 龙 (dragon), 魔鬼 / 撒但 (devil/Satan), 古蛇 (ancient serpent), 控告者 (accuser), 无底坑 (abyss), 兽 (beast), 印记 (mark of the beast)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 12:1-17; 13:1-18; 20:1-3, 7-10
  • Translation risk: Carries the same severe 龙 collision risk as Doctrine 9. Additionally, 印记 (the beast’s mark) must remain visually and terminologically distinct from God’s protective seal (盖印/受印, ch. 7) despite a shared conceptual root, or readers may confuse allegiance-to-evil marking with belonging-to-God marking — a distinction with no ready analogue in Chinese folk-talisman practice, where protective and binding marks are not always so sharply opposed.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

12. The Church as God’s Priestly People

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 教会作为神的祭司子民
  • Risk level: Medium
  • Key terms: 祭司 (priests), 圣徒 (saints), 十四万四千人 (144,000), 仆人 (servants)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 1:6; 5:10; 7:1-17; 20:6
  • Translation risk: 祭司 must be distinguished from Buddhist monastics (僧/和尚) or Daoist ritual masters (道士), both recognizable ritual-specialist classes in Chinese religious culture; this is instead the corporate mediatory identity of all believers through Christ, not a specialized priestly caste within the church.
  • Review routing: Native speaker review

13. Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture (Canonical Closure)

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 圣经的默示与完备权威
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 启示 (revelation), 预言 (prophecy), 不可加添…不可删去 (do not add to or take away)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 1:1-3; 22:6-7, 18-19
  • Translation risk: The closing canonical-seal warning affirms a fixed, completed, verbally-given revelation, distinct from the Chinese classical canon’s open sage-wisdom tradition (经, e.g. the Confucian Five Classics or the Daoist Daodejing) and from any claim of continuing channel-based revelation such as spirit-medium practice (灵签, 扶乩) — both live possibilities for readers to import onto 启示 without explicit correction.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

14. Divine Wrath and Righteous Judgment

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 神公义的忿怒与审判
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 忿怒 (wrath), 审判 (judgment), 收割 / 忿怒的酒醡 (harvest/winepress), 白色的大宝座 (great white throne)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 6:16-17; 14:9-11, 19-20; 16:1, 19; 19:15
  • Translation risk: 忿怒 must be distinguished from the impersonal karmic-retribution concept 报应 (already flagged under the Romans baseline “sin” entry): divine wrath in Revelation is the personal, righteous response of a holy God and — startlingly — of the Lamb, not an automatic cosmic mechanism operating apart from God’s own moral will and character.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

15. Covenant Fulfillment and God’s Dwelling with His People

  • Mandarin doctrine name: 约的应验与神与子民同住
  • Risk level: High
  • Key terms: 帐幕 / 同住 (tabernacle/dwell), 约 (covenant), 以色列 (Israel), 生命册 (book of life)
  • Supporting passages: Revelation 21:3, 7, 12, 14
  • Translation risk: 帐幕/同住 fulfills the OT covenant formula (“I will be their God, they will be my people”) and echoes the same verb used for the Incarnation (道成肉身, John 1:14, already Critical in the baseline). This must be taught as the culmination of the tabernacle-temple-incarnation trajectory — God’s unmediated, permanent presence — not merely generic “coexistence” or a this-worldly peaceful-cohabitation ideal.
  • Review routing: Human theologian

C. Full Chapter Coverage (Revelation 1–22)

Every chapter is listed explicitly. Chapters marked “Continuation” carry forward doctrines already fully detailed in an earlier chapter without introducing new terms; they are noted rather than omitted, per the full-book-coverage mandate.

E. Cross-Reference Note

This document must be read alongside analysis/08_core_glossary.md for term-level rendering rationale and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for the machine-enforceable doctrine list. Any future revision to doctrine names, risk tiers, or review routing must be made first in the registry and then propagated here — this file must never independently diverge from the registry it documents.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Return and Reign of Christ

Mandarin name: 基督的再来与掌权
Key terms: lord, king_of_kings_lord_of_lords, coming_soon, thousand_years, reign_with_christ, word_of_god_title
Review routing: Human theologian

万王之王、万主之主 and 神的道 must not be reduced to a dynastic-succession framing (改朝换代, cyclical rise-and-fall of dynasties) or to an especially exalted 天子 (Son of Heaven). Christ’s reign is categorically different in kind from any earthly ruler’s throne, not merely superior in degree — a distinction Chinese readers accustomed to the historic emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven legitimacy may otherwise flatten.

Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints

Mandarin name: 恶人受审判、圣徒得伸冤
Key terms: lake_of_fire, second_death, great_white_throne, wrath, book_of_life, harvest_winepress
Review routing: Human theologian

火湖 and 第二次的死 must be sharply distinguished from the Buddhist hell-realms (地狱) of Chinese popular religion, which are temporary punishments within an ongoing rebirth cycle from which a soul may eventually be released through merit or the ritual of 超度 (already forbidden in the baseline for ‘salvation’). This judgment is final, personal, and irreversible, rendered by the one true God through Christ — not an impersonal karmic ledger (功过簿/报应) that a soul works off over time.

Worship of the Lamb

Mandarin name: 敬拜羔羊
Key terms: lamb, worship, worthy, throne_of_god_and_lamb, angel_worship_forbidden
Review routing: Human theologian

敬拜 must be sharply distinguished from the generic verb 拜, used broadly and non-exclusively in Chinese folk practice for ancestor veneration (拜祖先) and multi-deity temple worship (拜神/拜佛). The Lamb receives worship identical to the Father’s, and the text itself dramatizes and forbids worship of angels — a direct, repeated safeguard against exactly the kind of expanded veneration of a populated spirit-hierarchy that is common in Chinese folk religion.

Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil

Mandarin name: 神终必得胜恶者的确据
Key terms: dragon, devil_satan, ancient_serpent, beast, false_prophet, armageddon, gog_and_magog
Review routing: Human theologian

龙 (dragon) is China’s foremost auspicious cultural symbol — imperial authority, cosmic power, and Chinese national/ethnic self-identity itself (‘descendants of the dragon,’ 龙的传人) — yet here designates Satan, the wholly evil adversary who is decisively and finally defeated. This is the single most severe structural collision risk in the entire curriculum, built into the destination language’s most positively-loaded creature-symbol rather than into a competing technical term, and requires sustained explicit doctrinal framing at every occurrence, not a single footnote.

Deity of Christ

Mandarin name: 基督的神性
Key terms: lamb, throne_of_god_and_lamb, first_and_last, word_of_god_title, king_of_kings_lord_of_lords
Review routing: Human theologian

The shared, singular throne (神和羔羊的宝座, grammatically one throne, not two) and worship identical to the Father’s are deliberate grammatical and liturgical assertions of the Lamb’s co-equal, eternal deity. Must not be softened to ‘an exalted heavenly being’ or to a bodhisattva-like intermediary figure who assists but is not himself fully God — a real risk given Chinese religious culture’s rich vocabulary for exalted-but-created spiritual intermediaries.

Spiritual Warfare and the Defeat of Satan

Mandarin name: 属灵争战与撒但的败亡
Key terms: dragon, devil_satan, ancient_serpent, accuser, abyss, beast, mark_of_the_beast
Review routing: Human theologian

Carries the same severe 龙 collision risk as the final-victory doctrine above. Additionally, 印记 (the beast’s mark) must remain visually and terminologically distinct from God’s protective seal (盖印/受印, ch. 7) despite sharing a conceptual root, or readers may confuse allegiance-to-evil marking with belonging-to-God marking — a distinction with no ready analogue in Chinese folk-talisman practice, where protective and binding marks are not always so sharply opposed.

High Risk Doctrines

The Sovereignty of God over History

Mandarin name: 神掌管历史的主权
Key terms: throne, almighty, alpha_and_omega, first_and_last, seal_scroll, mystery, abyss
Review routing: Human theologian

宝座 and 全能者 must be distinguished from the impersonal 天意 (‘heaven’s intention’) of everyday fatalistic speech and from the cyclical order-chaos-order pattern (治乱循环) that shapes much traditional Chinese historiography. God’s throne governs history purposively and personally toward a final goal, not through an impersonal, self-correcting cosmic mechanism.

Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution

Mandarin name: 在迫害中坚忍并忠心作见证
Key terms: overcome, testimony, tribulation, two_witnesses, crown_of_life
Review routing: Human theologian

得胜 must be taught as victory secured through union with the Lamb’s blood and one’s own faithful testimony (12:11), not self-generated heroic willpower or an accumulating spiritual merit-ledger (功德) that could earn standing before God — the same anti-merit vigilance the baseline requires for grace applies here to perseverance.

The New Heaven and New Earth

Mandarin name: 新天新地
Key terms: new_heaven_and_new_earth, tree_of_life, water_of_life, no_more_curse, tabernacle_dwell
Review routing: Human theologian

新天新地 must be taught as a final, non-repeating consummation of history, not one turn of an endless cosmic cycle as in the Buddhist kalpa (劫) of world-destruction-and-recreation or Daoist cyclical cosmic renewal — a genuine risk since Chinese cosmological tradition intuitively frames ‘world renewal’ as recurring rather than terminal.

The Church as Bride of Christ

Mandarin name: 教会为基督的新妇
Key terms: bride, marriage_supper_of_the_lamb, holy_city_new_jerusalem
Review routing: Human theologian

新妇 is a corporate, covenantal image (the whole redeemed people) deliberately contrasted structurally with ‘the great prostitute’ Babylon (chs. 17-18); it must not be flattened into ordinary Chinese wedding-custom expectations of dowry-exchange, face, or family-alliance negotiation, which would obscure the exclusive, Christ-initiated, once-for-all covenant-fidelity sense the image conveys.

Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation

Mandarin name: 象征与启示文学的解读原则
Key terms: revelation_apocalypse, signified, number_of_the_beast, the_144000, thousand_years
Review routing: Human theologian

Revelation’s symbols must be taught as God’s authoritative, Christ-centered disclosure of certain future realities, not as a coded fortune-telling text to be ‘cracked’ like the Chinese apocryphal-prophetic tradition of 谶纬 (chènwěi, texts predicting dynastic change) or divinatory practices such as I Ching hexagram-reading (占卜/卦象) or numerology. This general caution applies to every symbolic image in the book, especially numbers (666, 144,000, 1,000 years).

Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture (Canonical Closure)

Mandarin name: 圣经的默示与完备权威
Key terms: revelation_apocalypse, prophecy, do_not_add_or_take_away
Review routing: Human theologian

The closing canonical-seal warning affirms a fixed, completed, verbally-given revelation, distinct from the Chinese classical canon’s open sage-wisdom tradition (经, as in the Confucian Five Classics or the Daoist Daodejing) and from any claim of continuing channel-based revelation such as spirit-medium practice (灵签, 扶乩) — both live possibilities for readers to import onto ‘启示’ without explicit correction.

Divine Wrath and Righteous Judgment

Mandarin name: 神公义的忿怒与审判
Key terms: wrath, judgment, harvest_winepress, great_white_throne
Review routing: Human theologian

忿怒 must be distinguished from the impersonal karmic-retribution concept 报应 (already flagged under the baseline ‘sin’ entry): divine wrath in Revelation is the personal, righteous response of a holy God and — startlingly — of the Lamb, not an automatic cosmic mechanism that operates apart from God’s own moral will and character.

Covenant Fulfillment and God’s Dwelling with His People

Mandarin name: 约的应验与神与子民同住

帐幕/同住 fulfills the OT covenant formula (‘I will be their God, they will be my people’) and echoes the same verb used for the Incarnation (道成肉身, John 1:14, already Critical in the baseline). This must be taught as the culmination of the tabernacle-temple-incarnation trajectory — God’s unmediated, permanent presence — not merely as generic ‘coexistence’ or a this-worldly peaceful-cohabitation ideal.

The Church as God’s Priestly People

Mandarin name: 教会作为神的祭司子民
Key terms: priests, saints, the_144000, servants
Review routing: Native speaker review

祭司 must be distinguished from Buddhist monastics (僧/和尚) or Daoist ritual masters (道士), both recognizable ritual-specialist classes in Chinese religious culture; this is instead the corporate mediatory identity of all believers through Christ, not a specialized priestly caste within the church.
