Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Galatians (English → Mandarin)
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for Galatians 1–6, consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (Galatians edition). It supplies the same 14 doctrines, at the same risk tiers, and adds (1) a per-doctrine supporting-passage and translation-risk summary suitable for Phase 2 routing, and (2) a section-by-section walk-through of the ENTIRE letter, so that every chapter is explicitly accounted for — including passages that carry no new doctrinal freight beyond what is already logged. This document does not contradict doctrine_risk_registry.json; it is its narrative companion.
The core passage, Galatians 2:15–21, is the theological anchor of the letter and of this curriculum, but coverage below spans the full book, 1:1 through 6:18.
Part 1 — Doctrine Matrix (14 Doctrines, Consistent with Registry)
| # | Doctrine (EN) | Mandarin | Risk | Key Terms | Primary Passages | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Justification by Faith | 因信称义 | Critical | 义, 称义, 律法的行为, 信心, 算为义, 犯法的人, 废掉(恩典), 徒然 | 2:15-21; 3:6-9; 3:11; 3:24; 5:4 | Extends the Romans-baseline Critical 义/称义 collision with Confucian 义 into Galatians’ sharper target: 律法的行为 (works of the law), the exact register of disciplined moral/ritual observance Confucian ethics prizes. Every occurrence needs a note that justification excludes ALL law-keeping — ceremonial and moral — as a basis of standing before God. | Human theologian |
| 2 | The True Gospel versus False Gospels | 真福音与假福音 | Critical | 福音, 别的福音, 咒诅, 福音的真理, 迷惑 | 1:6-9; 1:11-12; 2:5; 2:14; 3:1; 5:7-12 | 别的福音 must read as categorically false, not “another valid option.” 咒诅 must be distinguished from folk ritual hexing (符咒/下咒) as God’s own judicial pronouncement. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Paul’s Apostleship | 保罗的使徒职分 | High | 使徒, 启示, 热心, 印记, positive 奴仆 self-designation | 1:1; 1:10-24; 2:6-9; 4:12-20; 6:17 | Unlike Romans’ simple assertion, this letter actively defends Paul’s authority against challenge; must avoid any resonance with a human teacher-lineage/discipleship-transmission model (宗师/大师) that would undercut “not from man nor through man.” 启示 must stay distinct from 占卜/算卦. | Human theologian |
| 4 | Law and Grace | 律法与恩典 | Critical | 律法, 恩典, 奴仆/奴役, 奴仆的枷锁, 基督的律法, 世上的小学, 自由的妇人/使女 | 2:15-21; 3:2-25; 4:1-11; 4:21-31; 5:1-4; 6:2 | Extends the Romans baseline’s grace-versus-merit contrast (功德/阴德 collision) into Galatians’ sharper law/grace antithesis. 基督的律法 (6:2) risks readers assuming a new legal code reopening the works/grace question; mandatory note ties it to the love-command of 5:14. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Crucified with Christ | 与基督同钉十字架 | Critical | 与基督同钉十字架, 十字架, 为我舍己, 肉体 (neutral sense) | 2:19-20; 5:24; 6:14 | Must be taught as completed, once-for-all union with Christ’s death, never repeatable ascetic self-mortification (Buddhist/Daoist practice; Neo-Confucian self-cultivation already flagged under 成圣). Boasting in 十字架 (6:14) inverts Chinese honor/face (面子) culture and requires explicit teaching. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise | 亚伯拉罕的约与应许 | Critical | 约, 应许, 后裔, 中间人, 算为义 | 3:6-18; 3:29; 4:21-31 | 应许 must stay distinct from 约 to preserve Paul’s priority-of-promise argument. 后裔 is number-neutral in Mandarin, obscuring Paul’s singular/plural argument (3:16) identifying Christ as the one “seed” — a Critical risk of losing the verse’s entire logic without an explicit note. | Human theologian |
| 7 | The Law’s Purpose | 律法的目的 | Critical | 律法的咒诅, 救赎/赎出, 师傅, 过犯, 世上的小学 | 3:10-25; 4:1-11 | 律法的咒诅 and 救赎 both sit beside active folk-religious ritual-curse and ritual-buyback practices. 师傅 (guardian/tutor) risks the opposite error: modern Mandarin 师傅 denotes an enduring, valued mentor, obscuring the law’s deliberately TEMPORARY, expiring custodial role — Paul’s entire point in 3:24-25. | Human theologian |
后嗣 must not narrow toward clan-lineage inheritance (家产/宗族继承) restricted to biological male heirs, since Paul’s explicit point (3:28-29) is universal heirship across Jew/Gentile, male/female, slave/free. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Freedom in Christ | 在基督里的自由 | High | 自由, 奴仆的枷锁, 奴仆/奴役, 自由的妇人/使女 | 2:4; 4:21-31; 5:1; 5:13 | 自由 carries strong modern secular-political liberty connotations that can crowd out the theological sense of freedom from the law’s condemning power, exercised in Spirit-empowered love rather than autonomy. Requires a clarifying note at 5:1 and 5:13. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Circumcision and the New Creation | 割礼与新造的人 | Critical | 割礼, 新造的人 | 2:3-14; 5:2-11; 6:12-16 | 割礼 is lexically clear but culturally unanchored for most Mandarin readers, risking a minor-ceremonial-footnote reading rather than the church-dividing issue Paul makes it. 新造的人 sits beside the forbidden Daoist idiom 脱胎换骨 and forbidden reincarnation terms 轮回/投胎 — exactly the vocabulary a translator might instinctively reach for. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Flesh versus Spirit | 肉体与圣灵的对立 | Critical | 肉体 (neutral/moral senses), 情欲的事, 顺着圣灵而行, 撒种/收割 | 3:3; 4:21-31; 5:13-25; 6:7-8 | 肉体 must be sense-flagged at every occurrence (neutral bodily existence at 2:20 vs. sin-inclined disposition at 5:13-24), or risk collapsing into ascetic body-denial or a toothless morality list. 6:7-8’s sow/reap principle closely parallels 种因得果, risking a slide into impersonal karmic causation rather than God’s personal moral governance. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Fruit of the Spirit | 圣灵的果子 | Critical | 圣灵所结的果子, 仁爱, 喜乐, 和平, 忍耐, 恩慈, 良善, 信实, 温柔, 节制 | 5:22-23 | The singular ἔργα/καρπός contrast reproduces the Romans-baseline Critical grace-versus-merit pattern; the unified, organic “fruit” (one noun, nine qualities) must resist a natural Mandarin reading as nine separately cultivable virtues. 仁爱 reproduces the exact Confucian Five Constant Virtues collision flagged for 义 (仁 is itself one of the five). 信实 must never be confused with 信心. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Faith Working through Love | 使人生发仁爱的信心 | Critical | 使人生发仁爱的信心, 信心, 仁爱 | 5:6 | Compounds three Critical/High collision risks (信心, 仁爱, works/grace) in one verse. Must be taught as what genuine, Spirit-given faith naturally produces — never a second, additional merit-condition alongside faith, which would reintroduce the letter’s condemned faith-plus-works logic through the back door. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Bearing One Another’s Burdens | 彼此背负重担 | Medium | 重担, 互相担当, 基督的律法 | 6:1-5 | Chinese proverbs framing consequences as strictly individual (自作自受; Buddhist-inflected 自业自受) run counter to Paul’s command that burdens be shared MUTUALLY. Doctrinal stakes are lower than the letter’s justification/law core. | Native speaker review |

Critical Risk Doctrines
Justification by Faith
Mandarin name: 因信称义
Key terms: justification, righteousness, works_of_the_law, faith, imputed_righteousness, transgressor, nullify_grace, in_vain
Review routing: Human theologian
This is the theological hinge of the whole letter and of the core passage. 义/称义 carry the full Confucian Five Constant Virtues collision already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline, intensified here because Galatians’ specific target is 律法的行为 (works of the law) — precisely the kind of disciplined moral/ritual observance Confucian 义 is culturally understood to require. Every occurrence needs a distinguishing note that justification excludes ALL law-keeping, ceremonial and moral, as a basis of standing before God.
The True Gospel versus False Gospels
Mandarin name: 真福音与假福音
Key terms: gospel, different_gospel, accursed_curse, truth_of_the_gospel, bewitched
Review routing: Human theologian
别的福音 must convey a categorically different, false message, not merely a valid alternative version — neutral Mandarin 别的 alone risks a soft ‘other option’ reading that would recreate the very false ecumenism Paul pronounces 咒诅 (anathema) upon. 咒诅 itself sits beside a rich Chinese folk-religious vocabulary of ritual curses and hexes (符咒, 下咒); every occurrence must clarify this is God’s own judicial pronouncement, not human sorcery.
Law and Grace
Mandarin name: 律法与恩典
Key terms: law, grace, slavery_negative, yoke_of_slavery, law_of_christ, elemental_things_of_world, free_woman_slave_woman
Review routing: Human theologian
Directly extends the Romans baseline’s Critical grace-versus-merit contrast (功德/阴德 collision) into Galatians’ sharper law/grace antithesis. The compound term 基督的律法 (law of Christ, 6:2) risks readers assuming Paul reintroduces a new legal code, reopening the works/grace question the letter closes; a mandatory clarifying note links it to the love-command of 5:14, not to new justification-requirements.
Crucified with Christ
Mandarin name: 与基督同钉十字架
Key terms: crucified_with_christ, cross, gave_himself_for_me, flesh
Review routing: Human theologian
与基督同钉十字架 must be taught as a completed, once-for-all union with Christ’s death, never as a repeatable ascetic self-mortification practice — a real danger given Buddhist/Daoist self-mortification traditions and the Neo-Confucian self-cultivation already flagged Critical under 成圣 in the baseline. Separately, boasting in 十字架 (6:14) inverts Chinese honor/face (面子) culture, where public shame is normally to be avoided rather than gloried in; this cultural-logic risk requires explicit teaching even though the term itself is lexically settled.
The Abrahamic Covenant and Promise
Mandarin name: 亚伯拉罕的约与应许
Key terms: covenant, promise, seed_offspring, mediator, imputed_righteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
应许 (promise) must be kept distinct from 约 (covenant) to preserve Paul’s argument that the promise’s legal priority cannot be overridden by the later law. The seed_offspring argument (3:16) is especially fragile in Mandarin: 后裔 is number-neutral, so without an explicit translator’s note, Mandarin readers cannot access Paul’s own grammatical singular/plural argument identifying Christ as the one ‘seed’ — a Critical risk of losing the verse’s entire logic, not merely its nuance.
The Law’s Purpose
Mandarin name: 律法的目的
Key terms: curse_of_the_law, redemption, guardian_tutor, transgression
Review routing: Human theologian
律法的咒诅 (curse of the law) and 救赎 (redemption) both sit beside active Chinese folk-religious practices — ritual curses/hexes and ritual ‘buy-back’ rites to purchase relief from misfortune — that could be mistaken for the biblical concepts if not carefully distinguished as God’s own judicial and redemptive initiative in Christ. 师傅 (guardian/tutor, 3:24-25) risks the opposite error: modern Mandarin 师傅 denotes an enduring, valued master-mentor relationship, obscuring the deliberately TEMPORARY, expiring nature of the law’s custodial role that is Paul’s entire point.
Circumcision and the New Creation
Mandarin name: 割礼与新造的人
Key terms: circumcision, new_creation
Review routing: Human theologian
割礼 is lexically clear but Chinese readers have no native cultural referent for a physical rite carrying this much soteriological weight, risking it being read as a minor ceremonial footnote rather than the church-dividing issue Paul makes it. 新造的人 (new creation, 6:15) sits directly beside the baseline’s own forbidden Daoist immortality-cultivation idiom 脱胎换骨 and the forbidden reincarnation terms 轮回/投胎 — exactly the vocabulary a translator or teacher might instinctively reach for when seeking a vivid Mandarin idiom for radical personal transformation.
Flesh versus Spirit
Mandarin name: 肉体与圣灵的对立
Key terms: flesh, works_of_the_flesh, walk_by_spirit, sow_reap
Review routing: Human theologian
肉体 must be flagged for sense at every occurrence: the neutral bodily-existence sense (2:20) versus the moral, sin-inclined-disposition sense (5:13-24) risk being collapsed into a single reading, either wrongly condemning the body itself (echoing ascetic Buddhist/Daoist body-denial traditions) or wrongly stripping the moral catalogue of its force. The sow/reap consequence principle (6:7-8) closely parallels the popular Chinese Buddhist-derived proverb 种因得果, risking a slide into impersonal karmic causation rather than the personal moral governance of God that Paul intends.
Fruit of the Spirit
Mandarin name: 圣灵的果子
Key terms: fruit_of_the_spirit, love_fruit, faithfulness_fruit, peace_fruit, kindness, self_control
Review routing: Human theologian
The singular ἔργα (works)/καρπός (fruit) contrast is structurally the same Critical grace-versus-merit contrast already flagged in the Romans baseline; the unified, organic nature of ‘fruit’ (one noun, nine qualities) must be preserved against a natural Mandarin tendency to read nine separate nouns as nine individually cultivable virtues. 仁爱 (love) in particular reproduces the exact Confucian Five Constant Virtues collision already flagged Critical for 义, since 仁 is itself one of the five. 信实 (faithfulness-as-fruit) must never be confused with 信心 (saving faith) despite translating the same Greek word.
Faith Working through Love
Mandarin name: 使人生发仁爱的信心
Key terms: faith_working_through_love, faith, love_fruit
Review routing: Human theologian
This single verse compounds three separate Critical/High collision risks (信心, 仁爱, and the works/grace relationship) in one phrase. It must be taught as a description of what genuine, Spirit-given faith naturally produces, never as a second, additional requirement (love-as-merit) added on top of faith as a further condition for justification — get this wrong and the letter’s whole polemic against faith-plus-works could be reintroduced through the back door as faith-plus-love-works.
High Risk Doctrines
Paul’s Apostleship
Mandarin name: 保罗的使徒职分
Key terms: apostle, revelation, zeal, marks_of_jesus, slave_of_christ_positive
Review routing: Human theologian
Unlike Romans, where apostleship is simply asserted, Galatians actively defends Paul’s authority against direct challenge. Mandarin phrasing must preserve the letter’s stress that Paul’s commissioning is ‘not from men nor through man’ — avoiding any resonance with a human teacher-lineage/discipleship-transmission model (宗师/大师), which would undercut the very point being defended. 启示 must also be kept distinct from divinatory revelation-seeking practices (占卜/算卦).
Adoption and Sonship
Mandarin name: 得儿子的名分
Key terms: adoption, abba, father, son_of_god, heir, baptized_put_on_christ
Review routing: Human theologian
Galatians 4 develops adoption more extensively than Romans 8, structuring the whole chapter around adoption versus slavery. 后嗣 (heir) must not be narrowed toward Chinese clan-lineage inheritance concepts (家产, 宗族继承) restricted to biological male heirs, since Paul’s explicit point (3:28-29) is that Jew/Gentile, male/female, slave/free are ALL equally heirs — a universal scope that a lineage-based reading would quietly undo.
Freedom in Christ
Mandarin name: 在基督里的自由
Key terms: freedom, yoke_of_slavery, slavery_negative, free_woman_slave_woman
Review routing: Human theologian
自由 carries strong modern secular-political liberty connotations in Mandarin that can crowd out the specifically theological sense of freedom from the law’s condemning power, exercised in Spirit-empowered love (5:13) rather than autonomy. A clarifying note is required at 5:1 and 5:13 distinguishing this from civil/political liberty discourse, which risks becoming either too individualistic or unintentionally politically sensitive.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Bearing One Another’s Burdens
Mandarin name: 彼此背负重担
Key terms: bear_burdens, law_of_christ
Review routing: Native speaker review
Chinese proverbs framing consequences as strictly individual and self-contained (自作自受; the Buddhist-inflected 自业自受) run counter to Paul’s command that burdens be shared MUTUALLY within the community. A clarifying note distinguishing communal, Spirit-enabled burden-sharing from an individualistic karma-retribution framework is recommended; doctrinal stakes are lower here than in the letter’s justification/law core, warranting native speaker rather than theologian-level review.
