Semantic Analysis

07 — Semantic Analysis: Zechariah (Full Book)

Note on Source Language

Zechariah is a prophetic book of the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), composed in Biblical Hebrew (not Koine Greek). This analysis therefore proceeds from the Masoretic Hebrew text, citing the Septuagint (LXX) Greek only where it materially affects a rendering decision (e.g., where LXX word choice shaped later Christian theological vocabulary now embedded in the New Testament citations of Zechariah — 9:9 in Matt 21:5/John 12:15; 12:10 in John 19:37; 13:7 in Matt 26:31; 11:12-13 in Matt 27:9-10). All transliterations below use standard academic Hebrew romanization. Citation format follows the destination Bible-citation convention established in the baseline package (book name + chapter:verse, Arabic numerals); the CUV book name for Zechariah is 撒迦利亚书 (Zhájiālìyà Shū).

This package supplements, and never contradicts, translation_memory.json. Every term already recorded there (神, 圣灵, 罪, 恩典, 义, 救恩, 约, 以色列, 荣耀, 平安, 外邦人, 圣洁, 先知, 预言, 大卫, 大卫的后裔, 基督, etc.) is reused exactly as recorded. New terms required by Zechariah’s distinct vocabulary and imagery are proposed below and are candidates for addition to translation memory in Phase 1 Step 8 / Phase 2 Step 16.

PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: Zechariah 9:9-10

Zechariah 9:9

FieldDetail
Original wordגִּילִי (from root גּוּל / גִּיל)
Transliterationgili (gîl)
Literal meaning”rejoice/exult greatly” — an intensive, whole-body joy, not mere contentment
Semantic rangeExultant celebration, often at a decisive act of God (deliverance, coronation, harvest)
English variants”Rejoice greatly” (ESV/NIV/KJV)
Contextual theological meaningCommand to Zion to respond to the King’s arrival with covenant joy, not passive acknowledgment
Mandarin rendering & risk大大喜乐 (dàdà xǐlè). Low risk. Standard CUV rendering; no folk-religious collision.
FieldDetail
Original wordבַּת־צִיּוֹן
Transliterationbat-Tsiyon
Literal meaning”daughter of Zion” — a Hebrew personification idiom in which a city/people is addressed as a young woman
Semantic rangeCorporate personification of Jerusalem/the covenant people; parallel to “daughter of Jerusalem” in the same verse
English variants”Daughter of Zion” (ESV/KJV/NASB); “people of Zion” (some dynamic-equivalence translations)
Contextual theological meaningZion as the covenant community awaiting her King; feeds directly into the “God’s Zeal for Zion” doctrine
Mandarin rendering & riskCUV renders dynamically as 锡安的民 (“people of Zion”) rather than literally as 锡安的女子/女儿. Medium risk. The literal daughter-personification (intimate, relational, protective) is lost in the CUV’s collective-noun rendering. Recommend retaining 锡安的民 for consistency with established CUV register, but require a translator note recovering the personification imagery for teaching purposes, since it undergirds the “zeal for Zion” doctrine (see 1:14, 8:2 below).
FieldDetail
Original wordהָרִיעִי (root רוּעַ)
Transliterationhari’i (rûaʿ)
Literal meaning”shout aloud” — often a battle-triumph or coronation acclamation shout
Semantic rangeShout of alarm, war-cry, or shout of jubilation at a king’s arrival/victory
English variants”Shout aloud” (ESV); “shout” (KJV); “rejoice” (NIV, softened)
Contextual theological meaningA royal-acclamation shout appropriate to a victorious king entering his city — not a cry of distress
Mandarin rendering & risk欢呼 (huānhū). Low risk. Standard, unambiguous jubilant-shout term.
FieldDetail
Original wordמַלְכֵּךְ (מֶלֶךְ + 2fs suffix)
Transliterationmalkekh (melek)
Literal meaning”your king”
Semantic rangeHuman monarch; by extension, the ideal Davidic king; in prophetic/messianic usage, the eschatological King
English variants”Your king” (all major versions)
Contextual theological meaningThis is the central term for The Coming Messianic King doctrine — the promised royal figure, fulfilled in Jesus’ Triumphal Entry (Matt 21:5; John 12:15).
Mandarin rendering & risk王 (wáng). High risk — NEW TERM, not in baseline TM. 王 alone carries no doctrinal problem in isolation, but every occurrence describing the Messianic King must be taught in explicit connection to 主 (Lord, baseline Critical term) and 基督 (Christ/Messiah, baseline Critical term), so the reader does not receive Christ’s kingship as a merely human/dynastic office analogous to a Chinese emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven-derived throne (see baseline’s caution on 天子 under son_of_god and sonship_of_christ). Recommend teaching note at every occurrence in chs. 9, 14.
FieldDetail
Original wordצַדִּיק
Transliterationtsaddiq
Literal meaning”righteous” — one whose conduct and character conform to right standing/order (root צדק, tsadaq, shared with baseline’s righteousness)
Semantic rangeMorally upright; vindicated/in-the-right in a dispute; ruling with justice
English variants”Righteous” (all major versions)
Contextual theological meaningThe King’s own righteous character/rule — distinct nuance from Romans’ forensic righteousness credited to the believer, but from the same Hebrew conceptual root that stands behind Paul’s δικαιοσύνη.
Mandarin rendering & riskCUV renders this royal-character sense as 公义 (gōngyì), not the baseline’s bare 义 (yì). Critical risk. Two distinct but related dangers: (1) 公义, like 义, sits inside the Confucian Five Constant Virtues field (仁义礼智信) and risks being read as Confucian rectitude cultivated by the ruler’s own moral effort rather than as an inherent divine-messianic attribute; (2) translators must not silently conflate this royal 公义 with the baseline’s soteriological 义 (imputed righteousness) without a clarifying note that both trace to the same Hebrew root but function differently here (a description of the King’s own character, not a status conferred on a believer). Require theologian review at every occurrence.
FieldDetail
Original wordוְנוֹשָׁע (Niphal participle of ישע)
Transliterationv’nosha (yasha)
Literal meaning”and saved/delivered/victorious” — grammatically passive: one who has been given salvation/victory by another, not one who is himself the acting savior in this specific clause
Semantic rangeDeliverance from military threat; rescue; vindication
English variants”Having salvation” (ESV/KJV); “victorious” (NIV); “he comes triumphant” (NRSV, interpretive)
Contextual theological meaningA major, genuinely debated translation question: is the King himself vindicated/delivered by God (passive, matching the Hebrew grammar), or does he actively bring salvation to others (active, matching later Christian reading of him as Savior)? Both readings cohere with NT fulfillment (the Father vindicates the Son through resurrection AND the Son brings salvation to his people), but the Hebrew grammar is passive.
Mandarin rendering & riskCUV renders this actively: 施行拯救 (“carries out/administers salvation” — i.e., he is the one bringing salvation). Critical risk. This is a non-obvious doctrinal choice reversing the Hebrew’s grammatical voice. Recommend retaining CUV’s established 施行拯救 for continuity with the existing Chinese Bible tradition and readability, but every occurrence MUST carry a mandatory translator note explaining the passive/active tension and connecting this to baseline salvation (救恩, Critical) so the doctrine is not taught as “the King saves himself by his own effort” (which would collide with the baseline’s grace-vs-merit critical concern) but rather “the King is vindicated by God AND brings salvation to his people.” Human theologian review required.
FieldDetail
Original wordעָנִי
Transliterationani
Literal meaning”humble / afflicted / lowly / poor”
Semantic rangeEconomic poverty, social lowliness, or (as here) voluntary humility of bearing/manner, in deliberate contrast to a warrior-king’s pomp
English variants”Humble” (ESV/NIV); “lowly” (KJV)
Contextual theological meaningThe King’s humility is constitutive of his messianic identity — a king who comes in meekness, not military conquest; theological seed for the Suffering Servant/humility-exaltation pattern fulfilled in Christ.
Mandarin rendering & risk谦和 (qiānhé) or CUV’s reduplicated 谦谦和和地. Medium risk. No major folk-religious collision, but must not be softened into a generic virtue term that loses the deliberate contrast with worldly royal grandeur; teaching note should tie this to Christ’s incarnational humility (道成肉身, baseline Critical) without collapsing the terms.
FieldDetail
Original wordרֹכֵב עַל־חֲמוֹר…עַל־עַיִר בֶּן־אֲתֹנוֹת
Transliterationrokev al-chamor…al-ayir ben-atonot
Literal meaning”riding on a donkey…on a colt, the son/foal of donkeys”
Semantic rangeDonkey-riding was associated in the ancient Near East with peaceable royal/judicial visitation (cf. Judges 5:10; 1 Kings 1:33), contrasted with the war-horse of a conquering king
English variants”Mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (ESV); “riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey” (NIV)
Contextual theological meaningDirectly and explicitly fulfilled in the Triumphal Entry (Matt 21:1-9; John 12:14-15). This is the single most load-bearing image of the core passage for the “Coming Messianic King” doctrine.
Mandarin rendering & risk驴 (lǘ, “donkey”) / 驹子 (jūzi, “colt/foal”). High risk — cross-document consistency requirement. Because Matthew and John’s Gospels quote this verse directly, the Zechariah rendering of 驴/驹子 MUST be identical to whatever rendering is fixed for Matt 21:5 and John 12:15 in this curriculum’s shared translation memory. Any divergence breaks the fulfillment link for the reader. Flag for cross-book term-lock in Phase 2.

Zechariah 9:10

FieldDetail
Original wordוְהִכְרַתִּי (root כרת)
Transliterationv’hikratti (karat)
Literal meaning”and I will cut off/destroy”
Semantic rangeTo sever, exterminate, remove entirely (also the root used for “covenant-cutting,” כָּרַת בְּרִית)
English variants”I will cut off” (ESV/KJV/NIV)
Contextual theological meaningGod himself, not the King’s own military campaign, is the one who disarms the nations — the King’s peace is God-given, not conquest-won.
Mandarin rendering & risk除灭 (chúmiè). Low risk. Standard CUV term.
FieldDetail
Original wordרֶכֶב / סוּס
Transliterationrekev / sus
Literal meaning”chariot” / “horse” (specifically war-chariot and war-horse)
Semantic rangeInstruments of ancient warfare; frequently paired in Hebrew poetry as symbols of military might contrasted with reliance on God (cf. Psalm 20:7)
English variants”Chariot” / “war horse” (ESV); “chariots…horses” (KJV/NIV)
Contextual theological meaningRemoval of these instruments signals that the King’s reign will not be established or maintained by military force.
Mandarin rendering & risk战车 (zhànchē) / 战马 (zhànmǎ). Low risk. Standard terms, no collision.
FieldDetail
Original wordקֶשֶׁת מִלְחָמָה
Transliterationqesheth milchamah
Literal meaning”bow of war / battle bow”
Semantic rangeOffensive weaponry generally, standing for war itself
English variants”Battle bow” (ESV/NIV); “the bow of war” (KJV)
Contextual theological meaningComplete disarmament imagery — the King ends war rather than wins it by force.
Mandarin rendering & risk争战的弓 (zhēngzhàn de gōng). Low risk.
FieldDetail
Original wordוְדִבֶּר שָׁלוֹם לַגּוֹיִם
Transliterationv’dibber shalom la-goyim
Literal meaning”and he will speak/proclaim peace to the nations”
Semantic rangeשָׁלוֹם (shalom): wholeness, well-being, absence of hostility, right relationship — here specifically international, political peace between formerly warring peoples, proclaimed by royal decree
English variants”He shall speak peace to the nations” (ESV); “he will proclaim peace to the nations” (NIV)
Contextual theological meaningThe King’s global rule is characterized by peace, not conquest — the geopolitical dimension of messianic shalom, distinct from (though related to) the individual believer’s relational peace with God taught elsewhere in this curriculum (Romans 5:1).
Mandarin rendering & riskCUV renders 讲和平 (jiǎng hépíng), using 和平 (hépíng) — not the baseline’s 平安 (píng’ān). High risk — requires a NEW glossary entry distinguishing this from baseline peace. Mandarin distinguishes 平安 (personal/relational well-being and safety, the word used for God’s peace with the individual believer in Romans 5:1 and for everyday well-being blessings/amulets) from 和平 (hépíng, peace between nations/absence of war, a political-geopolitical term). Using 平安 here would wrongly individualize a corporate/global promise; using 和平 in Romans 5:1 would wrongly politicize a personal one. Both are correct in their respective contexts, but the distinction must be taught explicitly so learners do not assume the terms are interchangeable. Human theologian or informed native-speaker review required at first joint teaching of both terms.
FieldDetail
Original wordלַגּוֹיִם
Transliterationla-goyim (goy)
Literal meaning”to the nations”
Semantic rangePolitical-geographic nations/peoples generally (cf. baseline gentiles, ἔθνη, which renders the same underlying concept in a NT ethnic-religious sense as 外邦人)
English variants”The nations” (ESV/NIV); “the heathen” (KJV, archaic)
Contextual theological meaningUniversal scope of the King’s peace-rule, extending beyond Israel — connects to universal_scope_of_gospel and unity_of_jews_and_gentiles baseline doctrines.
Mandarin rendering & riskCUV renders 列国 (liè guó, “the nations/kingdoms”) here, distinct from baseline’s 外邦人 (used for Pauline ἔθνη in an ethnic-religious contrast with Israel). Medium risk. 列国 emphasizes political entities; 外邦人 emphasizes an ethnic-religious “non-Jewish peoples” category. Both are legitimate but not interchangeable; a glossary note should clarify when each applies across the curriculum.
FieldDetail
Original wordוּמָשְׁלוֹ (root משל)
Transliterationu’moshlo (mashal)
Literal meaning”and his dominion/rule”
Semantic rangeSovereign governance, rulership, dominion
English variants”His rule” (ESV/NIV); “his dominion” (KJV)
Contextual theological meaningConnects directly to the baseline kingdom_of_god doctrine (神的国) — the King’s universal, peaceable dominion is the Kingdom of God breaking into history.
Mandarin rendering & risk权柄 (quánbǐng). Medium risk. Standard term for delegated or sovereign authority; must be taught alongside 神的国 (baseline) rather than as a merely political-dynastic term, avoiding the baseline’s flagged caution against framing God’s kingdom as 天下 (all-under-heaven) or 王朝 (dynasty).
FieldDetail
Original wordמִיָּם עַד־יָם…מִנָּהָר עַד־אַפְסֵי־אָרֶץ
Transliterationmi-yam ad-yam…mi-nahar ad-afsei-aretz
Literal meaning”from sea to sea…from the River [Euphrates] to the ends of the earth”
Semantic rangeMerism expressing total, universal geographic extent
English variants”From sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth” (ESV)
Contextual theological meaningThe Messianic King’s reign is not confined to Israel’s historic borders but is global and total — echoes and exceeds the ideal Solomonic kingdom (Psalm 72:8).
Mandarin rendering & risk从这海管到那海,从大河管到地极 (CUV, using 管 “govern/have dominion over” and 地极 dìjí “ends of the earth”). Low risk. No significant collision, though 地极 should be taught with the same universal-scope sensitivity flagged for universal_scope_of_gospel.

PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study, Whole Book

Chapter 1 — Call to Return; First Night Vision (Horsemen); God’s Zeal for Zion Introduced

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
return/repentשׁוּבוּ / shuvu (root שׁוב, shuv)“turn back, return”Repentance, covenant return, physical return from exile”Return” (ESV/KJV/NIV)Zechariah 1:3’s programmatic call: “Return to me…and I will return to you” — relational covenant reciprocity, foundational to the whole book’s restoration theme归向我 (guī xiàng wǒ). Medium risk. Must be taught as relational covenant turning, not ritual merit-making toward a deity for favor (cf. baseline grace/merit caution).
jealous/zeal (for Zion)קִנֵּאתִי / qinne’ti (root קנא, qana)“I am jealous, zealous, ardently protective”Covenant jealousy — protective, exclusive love, as of a husband for a wife or God for his people; can also mean sinful envy in human contexts”Jealous” (ESV/KJV); “very jealous” (NIV)Zech 1:14 — the doctrinal anchor verse for God’s Zeal for Zion: “I am exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion.”CUV renders with 心里极其火热 (xīnlǐ jíqí huǒrè, “my heart burns fiercely”) rather than 嫉妒 (jídù, ordinary human envy). Critical risk. 嫉妒/忌妒 in everyday Mandarin denote petty, vice-laden envy — using either would badly distort God’s holy, protective covenant love into a moral flaw. CUV’s 火热 (“burning/ardent zeal”) avoids this collision and must be the required rendering; NEVER render as 嫉妒/忌妒. Human theologian review required at every occurrence (1:14; 8:2).
horns / scattering nationsקְרָנוֹת / qranot (Eng. ch. 1:18-21, Heb. ch. 2:1-4)“horns”Symbol of national/military power that scattered Judah”Horns” (ESV/KJV/NIV)Vision of judgment on the nations that oppressed Judah — part of the Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan doctrine角 (jiǎo). Low risk. Standard symbolic-vision vocabulary; contextual note needed that this is apocalyptic-symbolic, not zodiacal/astrological.

Chapter 2 — Measuring Line; God as Wall of Fire and Glory; Dwelling in Zion’s Midst

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
measuring lineחֶבֶל מִדָּה / chevel middah”cord/line of measurement”Surveying tool; symbol of a city about to be rebuilt and its boundaries fixed”Measuring line” (ESV/NIV); “measuring reed/line” (KJV)Restoration of Jerusalem’s physical extent — key image for Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple准绳 (zhǔnshéng). Low-Medium risk. Standard technical term; ensure it is not read through a feng-shui/geomancy lens when discussing sacred space.
wall of fireחוֹמַת אֵש / chomat esh”wall of fire”Divine protective presence surrounding the city”A wall of fire” (ESV/NIV/KJV)God himself, not fortifications, is Jerusalem’s true protection四围的火城 (sìwéi de huǒchéng). Medium risk. Should be distinguished from folk-protective fire/talisman imagery (e.g., ritual fire used to ward off evil spirits in folk practice); this is God’s personal presence, not an impersonal protective charm.
apple/pupil of his eyeבְּבָבַת עֵינוֹ / b’vavat eino”pupil/apple of his eye”Idiom for something most precious and carefully guarded”Apple of his eye” (KJV/NIV); “the pupil of his eye” (ESV)God’s tender, protective care for his people — reinforces God’s Zeal for Zion眼中的瞳人 (yǎnzhōng de tóngrén). Medium risk. Idiom translates reasonably literally into Mandarin; ensure the idiom is not flattened into a generic “precious” gloss that loses the vivid protective-intimacy image.
dwell in your midstשָׁכַנְתִּי בְתוֹכֵךְ / shakhanti b’tokhekh (root שכן, shakan)“I will dwell/tabernacle in your midst”God’s abiding, localized presence among his people — same root underlying later “Shekinah” tradition”I will dwell in your midst” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 2:10-11 — God’s promise of personal, localized presence, theologically resonant with John 1:14’s “the Word…dwelt (ἐσκήνωσεν) among us”住在你中间 (zhù zài nǐ zhōngjiān). High risk. While this OT term does not itself require the baseline’s 道成肉身 (Incarnation, Critical) rendering, teachers must draw the canonical connection carefully: this is God’s promise of covenantal dwelling-presence anticipating, not identical to, the unique event of the Incarnation. Avoid implying this text alone teaches the Incarnation directly; flag for theologian review to keep the typological link accurate.
gloryכָבוֹד / kavod”weightiness, honor, radiant presence”Same term as baseline glory”Glory” (all versions)God himself will be Jerusalem’s glory (2:5)荣耀 (róngyào). Reused from baseline exactly. Medium risk per baseline notes (avoid 面子/光宗耀祖).

Chapter 3 — Vision of Joshua the High Priest; Satan’s Accusation; the Branch

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
Satan / the Accuserהַשָּׂטָן / ha-satan”the adversary, the accuser”A specific supernatural accusing figure; here standing to accuse Joshua the high priest”Satan” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Cosmic courtroom scene: God’s grace overrules the accuser’s legal case against his priestly representative撒但 (Sādàn). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Established transliteration with no direct Chinese folk-religious equivalent, but must be taught as a specific personal accusing being (“the Satan,” a legal-courtroom adversary), not conflated with the generic Chinese folk category of malevolent ghosts/spirits (鬼, guǐ) or with Daoist demon-figures.
angel of the LORDמַלְאַךְ יְהוָה / mal’akh YHWH”messenger/angel of YHWH”In some OT theophanies, functions with divine authority and speech, distinguishing this figure from ordinary angels”Angel of the LORD” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Presides over the courtroom scene with divine authority — many interpreters read this figure as a pre-incarnate Christophany耶和华的使者 (Yēhéhuá de shǐzhě). High risk — NEW TERM. Must be distinguished from a generic angel (天使, tiānshǐ) and from folk deity-messengers/immortals (仙, 神仙); teaching must not resolve the Christophany question dogmatically but should flag the connection to Christ’s pre-incarnate activity carefully, consistent with baseline’s incarnation and deity_of_christ cautions. Human theologian review required.
filthy garments / removal of iniquityהַבְּגָדִים הַצֹּאִים / עֲוֹנֶךָ / ha-b’gadim ha-tso’im / avonekha”filthy garments” / “your iniquity”Ritual/moral defilement symbolically removed; עָוֹן (avon) = guilt/iniquity”Filthy garments” / “your iniquity” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Symbolic cleansing of the priestly representative’s guilt — anticipates substitutionary atonement污秽的衣服 (wūhuì de yīfu) / 罪孽 (zuìniè, reusing baseline 罪 root). Medium risk. 罪孽 draws on baseline sin (罪); ensure it is taught as guilt requiring divine removal, not ritual pollution removable by human ceremony alone (cf. baseline holy caution against 清净-style ritual purity).
the Branchצֶמַח / tsemach”sprout, shoot, growth”A technical prophetic-messianic title (cf. Isa 11:1; Jer 23:5; 33:15) for the coming ideal Davidic king”The Branch” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 3:8 — “I will bring my servant the Branch” — core Coming Messianic King term, alongside 9:9’s “king”苗裔 (miáoyì) — the established CUV messianic title (cf. Jeremiah’s “righteous Branch,” 公义的苗裔). Critical risk. Must always be taught as a fixed, technical messianic title referring to Christ’s Davidic royal-priestly office, not as a generic word for “descendant” or “offshoot.” Requires theologian review at every occurrence (3:8; 6:12).

Chapter 4 — Lampstand and Two Olive Trees; “Not by Might Nor by Power”; the Two Anointed Ones

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
lampstandמְנוֹרָה / menorah”lampstand”Temple furnishing symbolizing God’s presence/light among his people”Lampstand” (ESV/NIV); “candlestick” (KJV)Part of the Visions of God’s Sovereign Plan — God’s Spirit-empowered presence sustaining the temple’s rebuilding灯台 (dēngtái). Low-Medium risk. Standard term; note continuity with Revelation’s seven lampstands for cross-curriculum consistency.
my Spiritרוּחִי / ruchi (רוּחַ + 1cs suffix)“my Spirit / my breath/wind”God’s own personal Spirit, empowering rather than human strength”My Spirit” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 4:6 — “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit” — the theological center of the vision, teaching total dependence on God’s empowering presenceCUV renders 我的灵 (wǒ de líng) — using 灵 (líng) with an explicit possessive, not 圣灵. Critical risk — direct interaction with baseline’s absolute Holy Spirit rule. The baseline package states “NEVER use 灵 alone” for the Holy Spirit, reserving 圣灵 exclusively. However, established CUV OT usage renders God’s own Spirit in un-qualified Hebrew (“my/his Spirit,” without an explicit “holy” modifier) as 我的灵/他的灵. This package requires: (1) retain CUV’s 我的灵/耶和华的灵 for OT occurrences lacking the Hebrew “holy” qualifier, since the possessive already marks it as God’s own personal Spirit rather than an ancestral/nature spirit; (2) MANDATORY translator note at every such occurrence (4:6; 6:8; 12:10 below) explicitly teaching that this is the same divine Person named 圣灵 in the New Testament, preserving full Trinitarian continuity. Human theologian review required at every occurrence — do not mark as approved without this note.
anointed onesבְּנֵי הַיִּצְהָר / b’nei ha-yitshar (lit. “sons of the oil”)“sons of oil” — idiom for those anointed with oilThe two figures (Zerubbabel, civil leader; Joshua, priestly leader) empowered by God’s Spirit”The two anointed ones” (ESV/NIV); “the two anointed ones” (KJV)Foreshadows the ultimate priest-king Anointed One (Messiah/Christ, from the same root מָשִׁיחַ, mashiach)CUV renders idiomatically as 受膏者 (shòugāo zhě, “anointed ones”). High risk. Directly shares its root concept with baseline’s messiah (基督, Critical). Must be taught carefully as two human, typological figures prefiguring the ultimate Anointed One, not as the Messiah himself and not as interchangeable with 基督.
Zerubbabelזְרֻבָּבֶל / ZerubbavelProper nameGovernor of Judah, of Davidic descent, leading the temple rebuilding”Zerubbabel” (all versions)Central figure in Restoration of Jerusalem and the Temple所罗巴伯 (Suǒluóbābó). Low risk. Established transliteration.

Chapter 5 — Flying Scroll (Curse); Woman Named “Wickedness” in the Basket

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
curseהָאָלָה / ha-alah”the curse/oath of judgment”A solemn, divinely-sanctioned curse pronounced against covenant-breakers”The curse” (ESV/NIV/KJV)God’s ongoing judicial oversight of covenant obedience, part of Sovereign Plan visions咒诅 (zhòuzǔ). Low-Medium risk. Standard term; must be distinguished from folk curse-magic (符咒, fúzhòu) practiced by human ritual specialists — this is God’s own judicial pronouncement, not a magical technique.
wickedness (personified)רִשְׁעָה / rish’ah”wickedness”Personified evil, embodied in a woman confined and removed to Shinar (Babylon)“Wickedness” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Symbolic removal of corporate sin from the restored community罪恶 (zuì’è, drawing on baseline 罪 root). Medium risk. Ensure this personification is read as symbolic-visionary, not as teaching a literal female demon-figure.

Chapter 6 — Four Chariots; Crowning of Joshua; the Branch as Priest-King

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
four winds/spirits of heavenרוּחוֹת הַשָּׁמָיִם / ruchot ha-shamayim”winds/spirits of heaven”רוּחַ (ruach) again bearing its dual “wind”/“spirit” sense; here four chariots represent God’s sovereign agents patrolling the earth”The four winds of heaven” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Part of Sovereign Plan visions — God’s total, active sovereignty over the nationsCUV: 天的四风 (tiān de sìfēng). Medium-High risk. Because רוּחַ/灵/风 overlaps with the “my Spirit” term above (4:6; 12:10), translators must discern context on each occurrence: this passage is about directional wind-agents/angelic patrol-spirits, NOT the Holy Spirit. Mis-rendering could either wrongly personalize these as the Holy Spirit or wrongly de-personalize God’s Spirit elsewhere. Flag for theologian review to keep the two usages clearly separated.
the Branch (priest-king)צֶמַח / tsemach(see ch. 3)Here explicitly combines royal and priestly office: “he shall build the temple…bear royal honor…sit and rule…and there shall be a priest on his throne” (6:12-13)“The Branch” (ESV/NIV/KJV)The clearest OT statement of a coming priest-king — directly anticipates Christ’s dual office (Hebrews 7-10)苗裔 (miáoyì). Critical risk — reuse ch. 3 entry exactly; this occurrence additionally requires a note on the priest-king combination, a category with no precise Chinese analogue (Chinese emperors held religious sacrificial functions but were never simultaneously the hereditary priesthood; avoid conflating with the emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven-derived dual role).
throneכִּסֵּא / kisse”throne, seat of rule”Symbol of royal authority”Throne” (all versions)The Branch’s rule; anticipates Christ’s eternal throne (Luke 1:32-33)宝座 (bǎozuò). Medium-High risk — NEW TERM. Standard royal term; must be taught in connection to Christ’s heavenly throne, avoiding a reading that limits it to an earthly dynastic seat analogous to the Chinese imperial throne (龙椅).
crownעֲטָרָה / atarah”crown, wreath”Royal/priestly headpiece placed on Joshua as a sign-act pointing to the Branch”Crown” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Enacted prophecy of the future priest-king’s coronation冠冕 (guānmiǎn). Medium risk. Standard term; ensure sign-act nature (Joshua wears it as a living prophecy, not as his own permanent royal claim) is explained.

Chapter 7 — Fasting Questioned; Call to Justice, Kindness, and Mercy

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
fastingצוֹם / tsom”fast, abstention from food”Ritual mourning/repentance practice”Fasting” (all versions)Zechariah critiques fasting practiced without accompanying justice and mercy — form without substance禁食 (jìnshí). Low-Medium risk. Prefer 禁食 over 斋戒 (zhāijiè), which carries strong Buddhist/Daoist ritual-merit and purification connotations; 禁食 keeps the practice neutral, letting the text’s own critique (justice/mercy over ritual) do the theological work.
justiceמִשְׁפָּט / mishpat”judgment, justice, what is right”Legal/ethical rightness in community relationships”Justice” (ESV/NIV); “true judgment” (KJV)Zech 7:9 — the prophetic ethical triad (justice, chesed, mercy) that must accompany covenant worship公平 (gōngpíng). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Distinguish from baseline law (律法) caution against equating biblical law with Confucian 礼 (ritual propriety); this is substantive ethical justice, not social etiquette.
kindness/loving-devotionחֶסֶד / chesed”steadfast covenant love/loyalty”Loyal love within a covenant relationship, often paired with mercy”Kindness” (ESV); “mercy” (KJV); “faithful love” (NIV)Covenant-loyalty love commanded among God’s people, reflecting God’s own character toward them慈爱 (cí’ài). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Related to but distinct from baseline grace (恩典, Critical): chesed is covenant-loyalty love exercised between covenant partners (including horizontally, between people), while 恩典 specifically denotes God’s unmerited saving favor toward sinners. Do not conflate the two terms; a clarifying note preventing collapse into either term is recommended.
mercy/compassionרַחֲמִים / rachamim”compassion, tender mercy” (root: “womb”)Deep, visceral compassion, often modeled on a mother’s love for her child”Mercy” (ESV/NIV); “mercies” (KJV)Paired with chesed as the ethical heart of covenant community life怜悯 (liánmǐn). Medium risk. Standard term; low collision risk, but should be distinguished from Buddhist compassion (慈悲, cíbēi), which is tied to detachment from suffering within a very different soteriological framework.

Chapter 8 — Restoration Promises; God’s Zeal for Zion Reaffirmed; Fasts Turned to Feasts

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
jealous/zeal for Zion (reaffirmed)קִנֵּאתִי / qinne’ti(see ch. 1)“I am jealous for Zion” (ESV); “I am very jealous for Zion” (NIV)Zech 8:2 restates and intensifies 1:14 — the doctrinal high-water mark of God’s Zeal for Zion心里极其火热 / 大发热心 (CUV). Critical risk — reuse ch. 1 entry exactly; NEVER 嫉妒/忌妒.
save/salvation (I will save my people)מוֹשִׁיעַ / moshia (ישע)“I will save/deliver”Deliverance and restoration from exile”I will save my people” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 8:7-8 — God’s active rescue and restoration of his covenant people to the land and to himselfReuse baseline salvation verbal form; 拯救 (zhěngjiù, verb) with continuity to 救恩 (baseline noun, Critical). High risk. Same care as the 9:9 “having salvation” entry above — teach continuity with 救恩 without collapsing historical-national restoration into the fuller NT doctrine of individual salvation, while still showing the typological link.
truth/faithfulnessאֱמֶת / emet”truth, faithfulness, reliability”Personal and covenantal reliability; “the faithful city""Truth” (ESV/KJV); “faithfulness” (NIV, contextual)Zech 8:3, 16, 19 — Jerusalem shall be called “the faithful/truthful city”; truthful speech commanded among the restored communityCUV: 诚实 (chéngshí). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Standard term for truthfulness/sincerity; low folk-religious collision, but ensure it is taught as a covenant characteristic of God and his restored people, not merely an individual ethical virtue disconnected from covenant identity.
peace (relational, within the community)שָׁלוֹם / shalom”peace, well-being”Communal, covenantal wholeness restored to Jerusalem”Peace” (all versions)Zech 8:12, 16, 19 — restored community life marked by peace and truth, distinct from the international peace of 9:10Here shalom refers to community well-being; may be rendered 平安 (baseline term) in this internal-community sense. Medium risk. Distinguish this from the international/political 和平 used for 9:10 — same underlying Hebrew word, different Mandarin term depending on referent (personal/communal well-being vs. geopolitical cessation of war). Cross-reference note required.
remnantשְׁאֵרִית הָעָם / sh’erit ha-am”remainder/remnant of the people”Those who survived exile and returned”Remnant” (ESV/KJV); “remnant of this people” (NIV)God’s preservation of a covenant remnant as the seed of restoration余民 (yúmín). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Standard OT theological term; connects to unity_of_jews_and_gentiles and mission_to_nations baseline doctrines as the remnant becomes the nucleus drawing in the nations (8:20-23).

Chapter 9 (verses outside the core passage) — Judgment on the Nations; the Coming King’s Reign of Peace (continued)

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
blood of the covenantדָּם־בְּרִיתֵךְ / dam-britekh”blood of your covenant”Sacrificial covenant-ratifying blood”Blood of my/your covenant” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 9:11 — God’s covenant faithfulness secures release of “prisoners” from the waterless pit; echoes Exodus covenant blood and anticipates the New Covenant blood of Christ (Matt 26:28)约的血 / 立约的血 (lìyuē de xuè), reusing baseline covenant (约). High risk. Must be taught in typological continuity with the New Covenant blood of Christ without over-collapsing the historical particularity of this OT restoration promise.
prisoners of hopeאֲסִירֵי הַתִּקְוָה / asirei ha-tikvah”prisoners of hope”Exiles who, though captive, possess a God-given hope of restoration”Prisoners of hope” (ESV/KJV); “prisoners who have hope” (NIV)Restoration doctrine — hope grounded in God’s covenant promise even amid present captivity有指望的被囚人 (yǒu zhǐwàng de bèi qiú rén). Medium risk. Standard descriptive rendering; low collision risk.

Chapter 10 — God Will Shepherd and Regather His Flock

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
shepherd/flockרָעָה / רֹעֶה — צֹאן / ra’ah/ro’eh — tso’n”to shepherd/shepherd — flock/sheep”God’s personal, caring leadership of his people, contrasted with failed human shepherds (leaders)“Shepherd…flock” (all versions)Introduces the extended shepherd motif running through chs. 10-13, climaxing in the striking of the shepherd (13:7) — directly relevant to Christ as the (good) Shepherd struck for his flock (Matt 26:31; John 10)牧人 (mùrén) / 羊群 (yángqún). Critical/High risk — cross-book consistency requirement. Must exactly match whatever rendering is fixed for “shepherd” in the Gospel of John (John 10, “I am the good shepherd,” 好牧人) elsewhere in this curriculum’s shared translation memory, since Zech 13:7 is directly quoted at Christ’s arrest (Matt 26:31). Flag for cross-book term-lock.
cornerstone / tent pegפִּנָּה / יָתֵד / pinnah / yated”corner(stone)” / “tent peg”Metaphors for stable, load-bearing leadership arising “from” Judah”Cornerstone…tent peg” (ESV/NIV); “corner…nail” (KJV)Zech 10:4 — leadership imagery anticipating Christ as the ultimate cornerstone (Eph 2:20; 1 Pet 2:6)房角石 (fáng jiǎo shí) / 橜子 (juézi). Medium-High risk. Flag cornerstone rendering for consistency with any NT epistle translations in this curriculum group referencing Christ as cornerstone.
gather/regatherקִבַּצְתִּים / qibbatstim (root קבץ, qabats)“I will gather them”Ingathering of scattered exiles from Egypt, Assyria, and beyond”I will gather them” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Restoration promise fulfilling covenant hope — God personally regathers his scattered flock招聚 (zhāojù). Medium risk. Standard restoration term, low collision risk.

Chapter 11 — The Worthless Shepherds; Thirty Pieces of Silver; the Broken Staffs

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
thirty pieces of silverשְׁלֹשִׁים כֶּסֶף / shloshim kesef”thirty [shekels of] silver”The prophetic sign-wage paid for the shepherd’s/prophet’s service, thrown to the potter”Thirty pieces of silver” (all versions)Zech 11:12-13 — directly and explicitly fulfilled at Judas’s betrayal price and its disposition (Matt 26:15; 27:3-10)CUV: 三十块钱 (sānshí kuài qián). High risk — mandatory cross-book term-lock. MUST be identical to the Matthew rendering in this curriculum’s shared translation memory; any divergence severs the explicit fulfillment citation for the reader.
potterהַיּוֹצֵר / ha-yotser”the potter”Recipient of the thrown silver, in the temple precinct”Potter” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Cited in Matt 27:10 with the “potter’s field” tradition窑户 (yáohù). Medium-High risk. Must match Matthew’s rendering for the same reason as the silver term above.
broken staffs, “Favor” and “Union”נֹעַם / חֹבְלִים / no’am / chovlim”Favor/Beauty” / “Union/Bonds”Two symbolic shepherd’s staffs, broken as enacted prophecy of God’s broken favor toward the nation and the broken unity between Judah and Israel”Favor…Union” (ESV); “Beauty…Bands” (KJV)Sign-act depicting the collapse of covenant blessing and national unity under a rejected shepherdCUV: 荣美 (róngměi) / 联索 (liánsuǒ). Medium-High risk. Highly symbolic sign-act vocabulary requiring substantial explanatory notes; low risk of folk-religious collision but high risk of reader confusion without context.
worthless shepherdהָרֹעֶה הָאֱלִיל / ha-ro’eh ha-elil”the worthless/idol shepherd”A false, negligent leader who abandons the flock, contrasted with the good shepherd”The worthless shepherd” (ESV/NIV); “the idol shepherd” (KJV)Warning oracle concluding the shepherd narrative — false leadership contrasted with the true Shepherd-King无用的牧人 (wúyòng de mùrén). Medium-High risk. Reinforce the shepherd term-lock established above; teach the deliberate contrast with the true Shepherd (10:2-3; John 10).

Chapter 12 — Siege of Jerusalem; the Spirit of Grace and Supplication; “Him Whom They Have Pierced”

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
piercedדָּקָרוּ / daqaru (root דקר, daqar)“they have pierced/thrust through”Physical piercing, typically by a weapon”Pierced” (ESV/NIV/KJV)THE central term for the doctrine “The Piercing of the One They Have Pierced” (Zech 12:10). Directly and explicitly quoted at the crucifixion in John 19:37 and echoed in Revelation 1:7.CUV renders with 扎 (zhā, “to prick/stab/pierce”): “他们要仰望我,就是他们所扎的” (12:10) / John 19:37’s parallel “他们要看那被他们所扎的人.” Critical risk — mandatory cross-book term-lock. This term MUST be rendered identically (扎) in both Zechariah and the Gospel of John within this curriculum’s shared translation memory; the doctrinal weight of the passage depends entirely on the reader recognizing the fulfillment citation. Human theologian review required at every occurrence.
spirit of grace and supplicationרוּחַ חֵן וְתַחֲנוּנִים / ruach chen v’tachanunim”spirit of favor/grace and pleas for mercy”God’s outpoured Spirit producing repentant grace-seeking and earnest pleading in the house of David”Spirit of grace and supplication” (ESV/KJV); “a spirit of grace and supplication” (NIV)The Spirit-wrought repentance accompanying recognition of the pierced one — directly tied to the doctrine of national/individual repentance at the crossCUV renders 施恩叫人恳求的灵 (shī ēn jiào rén kěnqiú de líng) — again using 灵 (líng) alone rather than 圣灵, per established OT CUV convention. Critical risk — apply the same mandatory-note protocol established at 4:6 above: this is the Holy Spirit (圣灵) at work producing grace-seeking repentance; a translator note connecting 灵 here to the baseline’s 圣灵 (Critical) is REQUIRED at every occurrence. Additionally, 施恩 (shī ēn, “bestow grace”) shares its root with baseline grace (恩典, Critical) — ensure the doctrine of unmerited grace producing repentance (not human effort producing grace) is preserved. Human theologian review required.
mourningמִסְפֵּד / mispēd”wailing, lamentation”Deep corporate mourning, likened to mourning at Hadad-Rimmon (a historical/geographic allusion)“Mourning” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Repentant grief in response to recognizing the pierced one悲哀/哀哭 (bēi’āi/āikū). Low-Medium risk. Standard mourning vocabulary; the Hadad-Rimmon allusion requires an explanatory footnote rather than translation risk mitigation.
house of Davidבֵּית דָּוִד / beit David”house of David”The Davidic royal line and its household”House of David” (all versions)Connects to baseline davidic_covenant and seed_of_david doctrines; the royal line itself receives the Spirit of grace and mourns over the pierced one大卫家 (Dàwèi jiā). High risk. Should be taught alongside baseline’s 大卫的后裔 (seed of David, High) as part of the same Davidic-covenant term cluster; ensure consistent proper-name usage (大卫, baseline-established) throughout.

Chapter 13 — The Fountain of Cleansing; Removal of Idols and False Prophets; the Shepherd Struck

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
fountainמָקוֹר / maqor”spring, fountain, source”A source of flowing water, here opened for cleansing sin and uncleanness”Fountain” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 13:1 — cleansing fountain opened “for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem,” directly following the piercing of 12:10 — atonement flowing from the pierced one泉源 (quányuán). High risk. Must be taught in tight sequence with the pierced-one doctrine (12:10) as its direct atoning consequence; not a generic image of renewal but specifically for “sin and uncleanness” (reusing baseline sin, 罪, High).
idolsעֲצַבִּים / atsabbim”idols”Physical objects of false worship”Idols” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Purified worship accompanies the cleansing fountain — idolatry is cut off from the land偶像 (ǒuxiàng). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Standard term; ensure it is taught in contrast to exclusive worship of 神 (baseline Critical), relevant given China’s religiously plural context.
false prophetsהַנְּבִיאִים / ha-nevi’im (contextually “false”)“the prophets” [here, false ones]Contrasted with the baseline’s prophet (先知, Low) — a corrupted version of the legitimate office”The prophets” [false] (ESV/NIV/KJV)God removes counterfeit spokespersons alongside idols — purity of true prophetic revelation假先知 (jiǎ xiānzhī), building on baseline prophet 先知. Medium risk. Distinguish carefully from legitimate 先知 (baseline Low risk); also distinguish from 算命先生 (fortune-teller) per baseline’s existing caution.
refine (like silver/gold)צְרַפְתִּים / tsraftim (root צרף, tsaraph)“I will refine them”Metallurgical refining process by fire, removing impurity”Refine them as silver is refined” (ESV/NIV)Zech 13:9 — purification of a remnant “one-third” through trial, resulting in the covenant formula “my people/my God”试炼 / 炼净 (shìliàn/liànjìng). High risk — proximity to Critical sanctification doctrine. Must be taught as God’s own refining action upon his people (a form of testing/purifying grace), NOT as self-directed moral cultivation (修身/修炼), echoing the baseline’s sanctification (成圣, Critical) caution against Neo-Confucian self-cultivation into sagehood. Human theologian review recommended.
covenant formula (“my people/my God”)עַמִּי / אֱלֹהָי / ammi / Elohai”my people” / “my God”The classic covenant-relationship formula”They are my people…The LORD is my God” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Confirms the restored covenant relationship following the refining — connects to baseline covenant (约)我的百姓 / 我的神 (wǒ de bǎixìng / wǒ de Shén). Medium risk. 我的神 reuses baseline 神 (Critical) with possessive; ensure the exclusive covenant-relationship sense (not “a god among my gods”) is clear given 神’s noted ambiguity as a common noun for any deity.
strike the shepherdהַךְ אֶת־הָרֹעֶה / hakh et-ha-ro’eh”strike the shepherd”Violent act against the shepherd figure, resulting in the flock’s scattering”Strike the shepherd” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 13:7 — quoted by Jesus at the Last Supper regarding his own arrest and the disciples’ scattering (Matt 26:31)Reuse ch. 10 shepherd entry (牧人, Critical/High) — this occurrence is the most theologically load-bearing instance and requires the strictest cross-book term-lock with the Matthew 26:31 rendering.

Chapter 14 — The Day of the LORD; the LORD as King Over All the Earth; Living Waters; Holy to the LORD

TermHebrew / TransliterationLiteral MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsTheological MeaningMandarin Rendering & Risk
Day of the LORDיוֹם־יְהוָה / yom YHWH”day of YHWH”The decisive future day of God’s climactic judgment and salvation”The day of the LORD” (all versions)Eschatological climax of the book — final judgment on the nations and establishment of God’s universal reign耶和华的日子 (Yēhéhuá de rìzi). High risk. Must not be assimilated to the cyclical order-chaos-order pattern of Chinese dynastic historiography (治乱循环, already flagged under baseline fulfillment_of_prophecy) nor to Chinese Buddhist millenarian expectation of Maitreya’s future age (already flagged under baseline messianic_promise, 弥勒). This is a single, linear, decisive divine intervention, not a recurring cosmic cycle or an anticipated future avatar’s arrival. Human theologian review required.
living watersמַיִם חַיִּים / mayim chayim”living water(s)“Flowing, life-giving water, here flowing out from Jerusalem in two directions (14:8)“Living waters” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Eschatological renewal imagery, taken up by Jesus in John 4:10-14 and John 7:38-39 (where it is explicitly identified with the Holy Spirit)活水 (huóshuǐ). High risk — mandatory cross-book term-lock. Must be rendered identically to the Gospel of John’s “living water(s)” in this curriculum’s shared translation memory; John 7:39 ties this image directly to the (Holy) Spirit, so consistent rendering also supports the doctrine of the Spirit’s outpouring introduced at 4:6/12:10 above.
King over all the earthמֶלֶךְ עַל־כָּל־הָאָרֶץ / melek al-kol-ha-aretz”king over all the earth”Universal divine kingship, the ultimate fulfillment of the Coming Messianic King doctrine begun at 9:9”King over all the earth” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 14:9 — climactic universal-kingship statement, bookending the Messianic King theme that opened at 9:9全地的王 (quán dì de wáng). Critical/High risk. Must be taught in direct continuity with the 王 (king) entry at 9:9 and with baseline kingdom_of_god (神的国, Medium); must not be read through the lens of the Chinese imperial ideal of “ruler of all under heaven” (天下共主), already flagged under baseline kingdom_of_god. Human theologian review required.
the LORD is one, his name is oneיְהוָה אֶחָד וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָד / YHWH echad u’shmo echad”YHWH [is] one and his name [is] one”Strong monotheistic affirmation, echoing the Shema (Deut 6:4)“The LORD will be one and his name one” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Universal, exclusive monotheism established at the consummation — directly relevant to the baseline’s god (神, Critical) entry and its caution about 神’s ambiguity as a common noun for any deity in folk usage耶和华是独一的,他的名也是独一的 (Yēhéhuá shì dúyī de, tā de míng yě shì dúyī de). Critical risk. Must be taught as an explicit rejection of the polytheistic folk-religious pantheon (multiple city gods, kitchen gods, ancestral spirits) still present in the target culture’s religious landscape — precisely the ambiguity the baseline flags for 神 as a common noun. Human theologian review required.
Feast of Booths/Tabernaclesחַג הַסֻּכּוֹת / chag ha-sukkot”festival of booths/huts”Israel’s harvest pilgrimage festival commemorating the wilderness wandering”Feast of Booths” (ESV); “Feast of Tabernacles” (NIV/KJV)In the eschaton, all surviving nations must come to Jerusalem to keep this feast — universal worship of the one true King住棚节 (Zhùpéng Jié). Medium risk — NEW TERM. Established CUV festival name; low collision risk, though care should be taken not to assimilate it conceptually to Chinese harvest/lunar festivals (e.g., Mid-Autumn Festival) which carry unrelated folk-religious and ancestral-veneration associations.
Holy to the LORDקֹדֶשׁ לַיהוָה / qodesh la-YHWH”holy to YHWH”An inscription/consecration formula, here extended even to everyday objects (horse bells, cooking pots)“Holy to the LORD” (ESV/NIV/KJV)Zech 14:20-21 — total, comprehensive sanctification of ordinary life under the King’s reign, the capstone image of the entire book归耶和华为圣 (guī Yēhéhuá wéi shèng), built on baseline holy (圣洁, High). High risk. Reinforce the baseline’s caution that biblical holiness is moral/relational set-apartness for God, not ritual purity attained through practice (avoid 清净); this verse’s radical claim — that even kitchen pots become “holy” — should be taught as the everyday-life outworking of that set-apartness, not a magical consecration ritual.

End of Zechariah semantic analysis. All Critical and High risk terms identified above route to human theologian review per the risk tiers defined in doctrine_risk_registry.json; proposed new terms are candidates for formal addition to translation_memory.json in Phase 1 Step 8.
