#English TermOriginal (Hebrew, transliteration)Chapter(s)Mandarin Rendering (Pinyin)RiskDoctrineSourceRationale / Alternatives Rejected
1Song of Songs (title)שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים, Šîr haŠŠîrîm1:1雅歌 (Yǎgē)MediumTraditional Allegorical ReadingNew — established CUV book title雅歌 does not literally reproduce the Hebrew superlative; note the “supreme song” construction supporting the book’s elevated canonical status.
2love-caresses (concrete)דּוֹדִים, dôdîm1, 4, 7爱情 / 你的爱情 (àiqíng / nǐ de àiqíng)HighGoodness of Marital Love; Beauty and DesireNewConfucian propriety register concern; must be taught as legitimate, celebrated, Scripture-sanctioned vocabulary, not secular romance-novel language.
3love (abstract)אַהֲבָה, ʾahăbâ2, 3, 5, 7, 8爱情 (àiqíng)HighExclusive and Covenantal Love; Beauty and DesireNewSame register risk as #2; also the noun grounding the core passage’s climax (8:6-7). Must remain terminologically distinct from baseline 恩典 (grace) — different semantic domain, no overlap risk, but noted for clarity.
4my beloved (of the man)דּוֹדִי, dôdî1–8 (26+ occurrences)我良人 (wǒ liángrén)MediumExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — established CUV renderingElevated/archaic register in modern Mandarin; requires glossing for readers unfamiliar with the term.
5my darling / companion (of the woman)רַעְיָתִי, raʿyātî1, 2, 4–6我的佳偶 (wǒ de jiā’ǒu)MediumExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — established CUV renderingMay underplay companionate-friendship nuance of רֵעַ root; note recommended.
6vineyard (self/relationship metaphor)כֶּרֶם, kerem1, 2, 4, 7, 8葡萄园 (pútáoyuán)LowBeauty and Desire; Exclusive and Covenantal LoveNewStraightforward agricultural metaphor; flag its recurring symbolic (not literal) sense at each occurrence.
HighExclusive and Covenantal LoveNewMust preserve full bidirectional mutuality against culturally-familiar asymmetric marital-duty readings (e.g., 夫为妻纲). Consistency required across all three occurrences (2:16; 6:3; 7:10 variant).
8I adjure/charge you (refrain)הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם, hišbaʿtî ʾetkem2, 3, 8我嘱咐你们 (wǒ zhǔfù nǐmen)MediumBeauty and Desire (rightly-timed)NewOath-level solemnity should not be flattened to casual request; note its role as a structural refrain across the book.
9little foxesשׁוּעָלִים הַקְּטַנִּים, šûʿālîm haqqᵊṭannîm2小狐狸 (xiǎo húlí)LowExclusive and Covenantal LoveNewInterpretive crux (threats to love), but no translation-risk beyond exegetical ambiguity, which is not a rendering issue.
10palanquin / litterאַפִּרְיוֹן, ʾappiryôn3华轿 (huájiào)MediumGoodness of Marital LoveNewEvokes traditional Chinese wedding sedan-chair imagery (花轿) — useful bridge, but note the role-reversal (used of the bridegroom’s procession, not the bride’s).
11crown (wedding)עֲטָרָה, ʿăṭārâ3冠冕 (guānmiǎn)LowGoodness of Marital LoveNewStandard term, minimal risk.
12blemish / defectמוּם, mûm4瑕疵 (xiácī)HighTraditional Allegorical Reading; Goodness of Marital LoveNewImmediate sense risks reading as mere flattery; allegorical extension (cf. Ephesians 5:27) requires explicit link to baseline term 圣洁 (holy, reused exactly) to avoid missing the typological weight entirely.
13brideכַּלָּה, kallâ4, 5新妇 (xīnfù)HighTraditional Allegorical ReadingNew — established CUV renderingAllegorical extension to the Church (baseline term 教会, reused exactly) must be explicitly distinguished from Chinese folk 冥婚 (“ghost marriage”) ritual custom to avoid category confusion.
14my sister, my bride (endearment)אָחֹתִי כַלָּה, ʾăḥotî kallâ4, 5我妹子,我新妇 (wǒ mèizi, wǒ xīnfù)CriticalExclusive and Covenantal Love; Beauty and DesireNew — established CUV renderingChinese has no equivalent poetic convention of sibling terms as marital endearment; literal rendering risks being read as a genuine incest reference given the strength of Chinese kinship taboos. Mandatory explanatory note required at every occurrence; some English versions (NIV, NLT) already soften this phrase for related reasons.
15garden locked / spring sealedגַּן נָעוּל / מַעְיָן חָתוּם, gan nāʿûl / maʿyān ḥātûm4关锁的园,禁闭的井 (guānsuǒ de yuán, jìnbì de jǐng)HighExclusive and Covenantal LoveNewRisk of reading as external restriction/control rather than freely-treasured exclusivity; must be framed as the woman’s own celebrated gift, not an imposed cage.
16Eat, friends, drink your fill (blessing over intimacy)אִכְלוּ רֵעִים שְׁתוּ וְשִׁכְרוּ דּוֹדִים5我的朋友们,请吃!我所亲爱的,请喝,且多多地喝!HighGoodness of Marital Love and IntimacyNewCentral textual anchor for the doctrine; must not be softened into abstract joy-language that loses its specific reference to consummated marital intimacy.
17altogether lovely / desirableמַחְמַדִּים, maḥmaddîm5全然可爱 (quánrán kě’ài)HighBeauty and Desire; Traditional Allegorical ReadingNew可爱 skews toward “cute/adorable” in modern usage, underweighting the intended “utterly desirable” force; also carries devotional-hymnic weight applied to Christ in Christian tradition (“He Is Altogether Lovely”).
18this is my beloved, this is my friendזֶה דוֹדִי וְזֶה רֵעִי5这是我的良人,这是我的朋友MediumExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew朋友 is broad in modern usage and may underplay the covenant-level companionship (רֵעַ) intended; brief note recommended.
19mutuality formula (settled restatement)אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי, ʾănî lᵊdôdî wᵊdôdî lî6我属我的良人,我的良人也属我HighExclusive and Covenantal LoveNewSee entry #7; maintain consistency across all three occurrences per baseline’s cross-document consistency principle.
20awesome as an army with bannersאֲיֻמָּה כַּנִּדְגָּלוֹת, ʾăyummâ kannidgālôt6威武如展开旗帜的军队MediumBeauty and DesireNewMilitary-victory imagery applied to beauty is an unfamiliar convention in Mandarin without context; note that beauty is depicted as genuinely powerful, not merely decorative.
21Shulammite (name)שׁוּלַמִּית, Šûlammît6书拉密女 (Shūlāmì nǚ)LowNew — established CUV transliterationProper name; minimal risk.
22delight / pleasureתַּעֲנוּג, taʿănûg7可悦的 / 欢愉 (kěyuè de / huānyú)CriticalBeauty and Desire within God’s DesignNewDirect collision with Buddhist framing of sensory pleasure/craving (欲, 贪爱) as the root of suffering to be extinguished; mandatory note affirming Scripture’s positive, unashamed naming of pleasure as good within marriage.
23his desire is for meתְּשׂוּקָה, tᵊšûqâ7他的心倾向我 (tā de xīn qīngxiàng wǒ)CriticalBeauty and Desire within God’s DesignNewRare word (only elsewhere Genesis 3:16; 4:7, both domination-context desire); its redemptive reversal here (desire restored, not domineering) is a key textual demonstration for this doctrine and is easily lost without an explicit intertextual note.
24little sister (literal kinship, retrospective)אָחוֹת קְטַנָּה, ʾāḥôt qᵊṭannâ8小妹子 (xiǎo mèizi)MediumExclusive and Covenantal Love (protective theme)NewMust be explicitly distinguished from the endearment convention of entry #14 — this is literal kinship reference, not marital address.
25wall / door (guarded chastity metaphor)חוֹמָה / דֶּלֶת, ḥômâ / delet8墙 (qiáng) / 门 (mén)MediumExclusive and Covenantal LoveNewSame framing caution as entry #15: guarded exclusivity should be presented as leading to peace/wholeness, not as bare restriction.
26make haste, my beloved (closing invitation)בְּרַח דּוֹדִי, bĕraḥ dôdî8我的良人,求你快来HighFaithfulness and LongingNewThe book’s deliberately unresolved ending must not be smoothed into false narrative closure; frame as a model of the Church’s own ongoing longing (cf. Revelation 22:17, 20).
27sealחוֹתָם, ḥôtām8 (core passage)印记 (yìnjì)HighExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — established CUV renderingRisks being read as a bureaucratic/legal authentication stamp rather than a permanent, worn, inalienable personal mark; typological resonance with NT sealing-by-the-Spirit motif (Eph 1:13; 4:30) heightens the stakes of an underdeveloped rendering.
28love is strong as deathעַזָּה כַמָּוֶת אַהֲבָה8 (core passage)爱情如死之坚强HighFaithfulness and Longing; Exclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — CUV convention坚强 connotes personal resilience in modern usage more than raw overpowering force; note required.
29deathמָוֶת, māwet8 (core passage)死 (sǐ)LowFaithfulness and LongingNewCross-culturally universal image of inevitability; minimal independent risk.
30jealousy fierce as Sheolקָשָׁה כִשְׁאוֹל קִנְאָה8 (core passage)嫉恨如阴间之残忍CriticalExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — CUV conventionCompound risk of both component terms (see #31, #32); must be taught as a unit affirming righteous, God-like covenant jealousy, not sinful cruelty or envy.
31jealousy (covenantal)קִנְאָה, qinʾâ8 (core passage)嫉恨 (jíhèn)CriticalExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — established CUV rendering嫉恨 denotes sinful envy/spite in ordinary Mandarin; without a note, the verse will be read as normalizing a vice rather than describing righteous covenant-exclusive zeal analogous to God’s own jealousy (cf. Exodus 20:5).
32Sheol / the graveשְׁאוֹל, šeʾôl8 (core passage); OT-wide阴间 (yīnjiān)CriticalFaithfulness and LongingNew — established CUV convention (OT-wide)阴间 is saturated with Chinese folk-Buddhist/Daoist underworld cosmology (courts of judgment, Yánluó Wáng, reincarnation processing); must be retained for OT-wide consistency but requires an explicit note distinguishing biblical Sheol (inescapable common fate of the dead, used metaphorically here) from folk cosmology’s structured afterlife bureaucracy.
33the very flame of Yah(weh)שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה, šalhebetyâ8 (core passage)耶和华的烈焰 (Yēhéhuá de lièyàn)CriticalTraditional Allegorical Reading; Faithfulness and LongingNew — established CUV rendering; 耶和华 is the standard CUV transliteration of YHWH, used identically in both Shen and Shangdi editionsThe only explicit occurrence of the divine name in the entire book; softening to a generic intensifier (“an extremely fierce flame”) would sever the passage’s grounding of marital love’s intensity in the character of God himself, undermining both the allegorical and covenantal doctrines.
34many waters / floodsמַיִם רַבִּים / נְהָרוֹת, mayim rabbim / nehārôt8 (core passage)众水 / 大水 (zhòng shuǐ / dà shuǐ)MediumFaithfulness and LongingNew — CUV conventionRisk of flattening the ANE poetic “chaos-waters” convention into a merely literal quantity of water; note on the convention preserves the intended sense of overwhelming, uncontrollable threat.
35quench / sweep awayכָּבָה / שָׁטַף, kābâ / šāṭap8 (core passage)息灭 / 淹没 (xímiè / yānmò)LowFaithfulness and LongingNewStandard, unambiguous verbs; minimal collision risk.
36wealth of his houseהוֹן, hôn8 (core passage)财宝 (cáibǎo)HighExclusive and Covenantal Love; Beauty and DesireNew — CUV conventionDirect intersection with the living Chinese custom of 彩礼 (bride-price/betrothal-gift exchange); teaching notes must make explicit that the verse critiques any transactional view of love/marriage, rather than leaving the connection implicit.
37utterly despisedבּוֹז יָבוּזוּ לוֹ8 (core passage)藐视 (miǎoshì)MediumExclusive and Covenantal LoveNew — CUV conventionHebrew emphatic (infinitive absolute) construction’s intensity should be preserved with an intensifier (e.g., 全然/完全) rather than a single flat verb.
38God (in allegorical application only; no direct occurrence in Hebrew text except via #33)Allegorical framework, all chapters神 (Shén)CriticalTraditional Allegorical ReadingBaseline reuseReused exactly per baseline translation_memory.json; never substitute 上帝, 天, or 老天爷. Applies only when teaching the allegorical/typological layer, since the literal text of Song of Solomon does not name God directly apart from שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה.
39Christ (in allegorical application)Allegorical framework基督 (Jīdū)CriticalTraditional Allegorical ReadingBaseline reuseReused exactly. The Bridegroom of the allegorical reading tradition is identified with 基督, never conflated with 弥勒 (Maitreya) per baseline’s existing Critical flag.
40Church (in allegorical application, = “bride”)Allegorical framework教会 (jiàohuì)CriticalTraditional Allegorical ReadingBaseline reuseReused exactly. Never 庙/寺/道观 per baseline. The allegorical “bride” (新妇, #13) maps to this baseline term.
41holy / without blemish (allegorical application)Allegorical framework, esp. ch. 4圣洁 (shèngjié)HighTraditional Allegorical ReadingBaseline reuseReused exactly per baseline. Applied to the allegorical extension of מוּם (#12, “no blemish”) to the Church’s holiness in Christ; never rendered with ritual-purity-only connotations (清净) per baseline note.
42covenant (marriage as covenant, thematic)Thematic, esp. ch. 8约 (yuē)HighExclusive and Covenantal LoveBaseline reuseReused exactly per baseline. Marriage is treated throughout as a relational, divinely-witnessed covenant bond (婚约, hūnyuē, building on baseline 约), not a negotiated commercial contract (合同/契约, both rejected per baseline).

Cross-Reference Notes

  • Entries #7 and #19 (the mutuality formula in 2:16 and 6:3) and the related 7:10 variant must receive identical Mandarin phrasing wherever the underlying Hebrew clause structure is identical, per the baseline’s “Theological Consistency Rules Across Documents” principle (see baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md).
  • Entries #30–33 (the four core-passage terms comprising “jealousy fierce as Sheol… the very flame of Yah”) should always be reviewed as a unit by a human theologian, since their doctrinal force depends on how they interact within the single poetic line, not merely on each word in isolation.
  • Entry #14 (sister-bride endearment) and entry #24 (literal “little sister”) must never be merged or treated as the same phenomenon in teaching notes — one is a deliberate ANE poetic convention of endearment, the other is literal kinship reference to an actual sibling at an earlier life stage.
  • Any future occurrence of a term already fixed in the baseline Romans package (entries #38–42, and any not yet identified) must reuse the baseline rendering exactly; no new alternative renderings may be introduced for these terms within the Song of Solomon curriculum.

This glossary extends, and does not contradict, the baseline translation_memory.json and bible_term_registry.json. All new entries above are proposed for addition to translation memory pending Phase 1 Step 2 (Doctrine Risk Registry extension) and Phase 2 theologian/native-speaker review per the routing rules in doctrine_risk_registry.json.

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷

CRITICAL: this Language Package standardizes on 神 (the CUV ‘Shen edition’ reading) rather than 上帝 (Shàngdì), per the baseline rationale (see baseline translation_memory.json). NEVER use 天 or 老天爷. SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: 神 is invoked only in the allegorical/typological reading layer of this curriculum; the literal Hebrew text of Song of Solomon names God directly only once, via the divine-name compound שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה in 8:6, rendered 耶和华的烈焰 (see flame_of_yah_shalhevetyah below). Never impose 神 onto the literal marital-love reading as if the human lovers were being allegorized by default — the literal reading stands as a legitimate, celebrated reading in its own right per the Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy doctrine.

Jesus

Approved rendering: 耶稣
Transliteration: Yēsū
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ

CUV standard transliteration, used uniformly across all Chinese Bible traditions. SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: used only when explicitly teaching the Traditional Allegorical Reading’s identification of the Bridegroom with Jesus Christ; the proper name does not occur in the literal Hebrew text of Song of Solomon and must not be inserted into literal-sense translation of the poem itself.

Messiah

Approved rendering: 基督
Transliteration: Jīdū
Doctrine: Messianic Promise
Rejected alternatives: 弥勒, 救世主式泛称

CRITICAL: NEVER conflate with 弥勒 (Maitreya). SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: 基督 identifies the Bridegroom of the Traditional Allegorical Reading tradition (see bridegroom_and_bride_typology in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json). This allegorical identification must always be taught as a secondary, typological application layered onto the literal text, never presented as the text’s plain-sense meaning.

Holy Spirit

Approved rendering: 圣灵
Transliteration: Shènglíng
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: 祖灵, 灵

CRITICAL: always use the compound 圣灵; NEVER 灵 alone or 祖灵. SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: not directly thematized within this curriculum’s five core doctrines, but retained in translation memory for cross-curriculum consistency, since teaching materials on the ‘seal’ (חוֹתָם, 8:6, rendered 印记) may reference the NT sealing-by-the-Spirit motif (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30) as an illustrative cross-reference.

Sister Bride Endearment

Approved rendering: 我妹子,我新妇
Transliteration: wǒ mèizi, wǒ xīnfù
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church); Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 我的爱人,我的新娘 (the NIV/NLT softening strategy; rejected because it abandons the ANE literary convention entirely rather than teaching it, and breaks CUV consistency), 我亲爱的 (loses the deliberate kinship-intimacy convention altogether)
Original: אָחֹתִי כַלָּה
Category: Endearment

CRITICAL: new term. אָחֹתִי כַלָּה (4:9-12; 5:1), an ANE literary convention combining a kinship term of tender intimacy with a covenantal marital term. Chinese literary tradition has no equivalent convention; rendered literally, 我妹子 for one’s spouse risks being read as a genuine, deeply taboo incest suggestion. A mandatory explanatory note on the ANE poetic convention is required at every occurrence, without exception.

Delight Pleasure Taanug

Approved rendering: 可悦的
Transliteration: kěyuè de
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: 欲望 (imports Buddhist craving/desire-as-suffering connotation), 贪爱 (the explicit Buddhist craving-attachment term; must never be used)
Original: תַּעֲנוּג
Category: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design

CRITICAL: new term. תַּעֲנוּג (7:6), an explicit, unashamed naming of erotic/sensory pleasure as a legitimate, celebrated component of marital love. Sits at a direct collision point with the Buddhist framing of pleasure/craving (欲, 贪爱) as the root of suffering to be extinguished. A mandatory doctrinal note affirming Scripture’s positive naming of pleasure as God-designed and good is required at every occurrence.

Desire Teshuqah

Approved rendering: 他的心倾向我
Transliteration: tā de xīn qīngxiàng wǒ
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: 渴望 (generic desire-word; erases the Genesis 3:16/4:7 intertextual echo), 欲望 (imports craving/attachment connotation)
Original: תְּשׂוּקָה
Category: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design

CRITICAL: new term. תְּשׂוּקָה (7:10, ‘his desire is for me’), a rare word occurring elsewhere only in Genesis 3:16 and 4:7, both entangled with domination. Here the same word describes desire restored to its non-domineering, rightly-ordered form. A theologian-level note tracing this three-text echo (Genesis 3:16 → 4:7 → Song 7:10) is mandatory at every occurrence; without it the doctrinal payload is invisible.

Jealousy Fierce As Sheol Compound

Approved rendering: 嫉恨如阴间之残忍
Transliteration: jíhèn rú yīnjiān zhī cánrěn
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 嫉妒如坟墓之残暴 (non-CUV phrasing, breaks OT-wide consistency)
Original: קָשָׁה כִשְׁאוֹל קִנְאָה
Category: Covenant

CRITICAL: new term, CUV convention. קָשָׁה כִשְׁאוֹל קִנְאָה (8:6). Must be reviewed as a single unit by a human theologian, since its doctrinal force depends on how both component terms (jealousy_qinah and sheol below) interact within the single poetic line, affirming righteous covenant jealousy, not sinful cruelty or envy.

Jealousy Qinah

Approved rendering: 嫉恨
Transliteration: jíhèn
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 妒忌 (near-synonym, same negative-envy connotation problem), 热切之心 (invented euphemism; loses the deliberate lexical echo of God’s own jealousy in Exodus 20:5)
Original: קִנְאָה
Category: Covenant

CRITICAL: new term. קִנְאָה (8:6), from the same root used of God’s own covenant jealousy (אֵל קַנָּא, Exodus 20:5; 34:14). In ordinary contemporary Mandarin, 嫉恨 denotes resentful envy/spite almost exclusively. Every occurrence must be flagged with a note distinguishing biblical covenant-jealousy (righteous, exclusive zeal) from the sinful envy 嫉恨 normally names.

Sheol

Approved rendering: 阴间
Transliteration: yīnjiān
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Rejected alternatives: 地府 (even more strongly tied to folk-Buddhist/Daoist judicial underworld cosmology), 阎罗殿 (names the folk underworld court directly; wholly inappropriate)
Original: שְׁאוֹל
Category: Faithfulness and Longing

CRITICAL: new term, established OT-wide CUV convention. שְׁאוֹל (8:6). 阴间 is saturated with Chinese folk-Buddhist/Daoist underworld cosmology (Ten Courts, 阎罗王, ancestor-appeasement, reincarnation processing). Must be retained for OT-wide consistency, but every occurrence in this curriculum requires an explicit note distinguishing biblical Sheol (the inescapable common fate of all the dead, used here purely as a metaphor for intensity) from the structured folk cosmology.

Flame Of Yah Shalhevetyah

Approved rendering: 耶和华的烈焰
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá de lièyàn
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church); Faithfulness and Longing
Rejected alternatives: 极其猛烈的火焰 (generic intensifier; severs the divine-name grounding entirely), 神圣的火焰 (vague ‘divine flame’; loses the specific personal reference to YHWH)
Original: שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה
Category: Allegory / God

CRITICAL: new term, established CUV rendering. שַׁלְהֶבֶתְיָה (8:6), the book’s only explicit occurrence of the divine name. Retains the CUV tetragrammaton transliteration 耶和华, identical in both Shen and Shangdi editions. A softened, generic-intensifier rendering would sever the passage’s grounding of marital love’s intensity in God’s own character, undermining both the Traditional Allegorical Reading and the Faithfulness and Longing doctrine. Must be retained and actively taught, never smoothed away.

High Risk Terms

Holy

Approved rendering: 圣洁
Transliteration: shèngjié
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: 清净, 圣人般的

圣洁 = set apart for God and morally pure; avoid 清净 (Daoist/Buddhist ritual-purity term). SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: applied to the allegorical extension of 瑕疵 (‘blemish,’ מוּם, 4:7) — ‘no blemish in you’ — to the Church’s holiness in Christ (cf. Ephesians 5:27). The explicit link between 瑕疵 and 圣洁 must be made in teaching notes at every allegorical use of 4:7, or the typological weight is missed entirely and the verse reads only as romantic flattery.

Covenant

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: yuē
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant
Rejected alternatives: 合同, 契约

Relational, divinely initiated covenant bond; avoid 合同/契约 (ordinary commercial contract terms). SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: marriage itself (婚约, building on 约) is treated throughout this curriculum as a relational covenant bond, not a negotiated commercial exchange — directly reinforced by the ‘love cannot be purchased’ statement of Song of Solomon 8:7 (see wealth_of_house_hon below).

Love Caresses Dodim

Approved rendering: 你的爱情
Transliteration: nǐ de àiqíng
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: 亲吻 (too narrow, denotes only kissing), 情欲 (carries a negative/lustful connotation absent from the Hebrew)
Original: דּוֹדִים
Category: Marital Love

New term. דּוֹדִים (1:2, 4) is a plural-intensive noun for the concrete expressions of love — caresses, love-making. Opens the book with frank, sensory love-language. Confucian propriety (礼) historically relegates such vocabulary to a lower discourse register unsuited to serious/religious literature; teaching notes must affirm this is Scripture’s own sanctioned vocabulary, not secular importation.

Love Abstract Ahabah

Approved rendering: 爱情
Transliteration: àiqíng
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love; Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: 情欲 (negative lust connotation), 喜爱 (too weak, generic liking rather than covenantal love)
Original: אַהֲבָה
Category: Marital Love

New term. אַהֲבָה, the book’s central abstract noun, appears at its theological climax (8:6-7). Distinct semantic domain from baseline 恩典 (grace) — no overlap risk, but must not be treated as a lesser or merely decorative topic under Confucian-propriety-shaped reading habits.

Mutual Belonging Formula

Approved rendering: 我的良人属我,我也属他 / 我属我的良人,我的良人也属我
Transliteration: wǒ de liángrén shǔ wǒ, wǒ yě shǔ tā / wǒ shǔ wǒ de liángrén, wǒ de liángrén yě shǔ wǒ
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 我属我的良人 (single-direction only, drops the reciprocal half), 他是我的 (colloquial, loses covenantal register)
Original: דּוֹדִי לִי וַאֲנִי לוֹ / אֲנִי לְדוֹדִי וְדוֹדִי לִי
Category: Covenant

New term. Chiastic mutuality formula (2:16; 6:3; 7:10 variant). Traditional Chinese marital ethics (夫为妻纲) frame marriage asymmetrically; a flattened rendering risks defaulting to only the culturally familiar half. All occurrences must use matched, fully bidirectional phrasing per the cross-document consistency principle.

Blemish Mum

Approved rendering: 瑕疵
Transliteration: xiácī
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church); The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: 缺点 (too mundane, loses the sacrificial-cultic overtone), 毛病 (colloquial, trivializing)
Original: מוּם
Category: Beauty and Desire / Allegory

New term. מוּם (4:7, ‘no blemish in you’); elsewhere describes disqualifying defects in sacrificial animals/priests (Leviticus 21-22). In the immediate sense risks reading as mere flattery; the allegorical extension requires explicit linkage to 圣洁 (see holy above) to connect with Ephesians 5:27’s ‘holy and without blemish’ Church typology.

Bride Kallah

Approved rendering: 新妇
Transliteration: xīnfù
Doctrine: The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church)
Rejected alternatives: 新娘 (modern secular wedding-industry register, loses covenantal weight), 妻子 (loses the bridal, entering-covenant nuance)
Original: כַּלָּה
Category: Allegory / Marriage

New term. כַּלָּה, first at 4:8, the primary lexical anchor connecting this book to NT bride-of-Christ ecclesiology (maps to baseline 教会, see church above). Every allegorical use requires an explicit note distinguishing it from the Chinese folk-ritual custom of 冥婚 (‘ghost/spirit marriage’).

Garden Locked Spring Sealed

Approved rendering: 关锁的园,禁闭的井
Transliteration: guānsuǒ de yuán, jìnbì de jǐng
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 隐秘的园 (loses the deliberate ‘locked/sealed’ exclusivity image), 私密花园 (too soft, understates the covenantal exclusivity force)
Original: גַּן נָעוּל / מַעְיָן חָתוּם
Category: Covenant / Exclusivity

New term. גַּן נָעוּל / מַעְיָן חָתוּם (4:12), imagery of exclusivity and reserved access. Risk of reading as externally-imposed restriction rather than freely-treasured exclusivity; must be framed as the woman’s own celebrated gift, not an imposed cage.

Eat Friends Drink Blessing

Approved rendering: 我的朋友们,请吃!我所亲爱的,请喝,且多多地喝!
Transliteration: wǒ de péngyoumen, qǐng chī! wǒ suǒ qīn’ài de, qǐng hē, qiě duōduō de hē!
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: 你们要喜乐 (abstracted joy-language, loses the specific reference to consummated marital intimacy)
Original: אִכְלוּ רֵעִים שְׁתוּ וְשִׁכְרוּ דּוֹדִים
Category: Marital Intimacy

New term. אִכְלוּ רֵעִים שְׁתוּ וְשִׁכְרוּ דּוֹדִים (5:1b), a benediction over the couple’s consummated intimacy. The clearest textual anchor for the Goodness of Marital Love doctrine; must not be softened into vague joy-language, since the verse’s doctrinal value depends on its specificity.

Altogether Lovely Mahmaddim

Approved rendering: 全然可爱
Transliteration: quánrán kě’ài
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design; The Traditional Allegorical Reading (Christ and the Church)
Rejected alternatives: 很可爱 (‘cute’ register, too weak), 完美 (too abstract, loses relational-desirability sense)
Original: מַחְמַדִּים
Category: Beauty and Desire / Allegory

New term. מַחְמַדִּים (5:16), ‘altogether lovely/desirable,’ capping the woman’s description of her beloved. 可爱 skews toward ‘cute/adorable’ in modern usage; this phrase also carries devotional-hymnic weight applied to Christ in Christian tradition (‘He Is Altogether Lovely’); a stronger rendering with a clarifying note is recommended.

Make Haste My Beloved

Approved rendering: 我的良人,求你快来
Transliteration: wǒ de liángrén, qiú nǐ kuài lái
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Rejected alternatives: 回来吧 (implies departure/return, contradicts the ongoing ‘coming’ invitation), 永别 (wrongly implies finality/farewell)
Original: בְּרַח דּוֹדִי
Category: Faithfulness and Longing

New term. בְּרַח דּוֹדִי (8:14), the book’s final verse — an urgent summons and open invitation, not narrative resolution. The book’s deliberate refusal to end with tidy closure must not be smoothed over; teaching materials should flag this open ending as intentional and doctrinally significant.

Seal Chotam

Approved rendering: 印记
Transliteration: yìnjì
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 印章 (bureaucratic/legal document-stamp connotation), 戳记 (rubber-stamp connotation, loses the personal-ownership sense)
Original: חוֹתָם
Category: Covenant

New term. חוֹתָם (8:6), a signet ring/cylinder seal worn permanently on the body, marking ownership and authenticity. Modern Mandarin usage evokes an official document chop; a teaching note explaining the ANE body-worn-seal background is required, heightened by typological resonance with NT sealing-by-the-Spirit (Ephesians 1:13; 4:30).

Love Strong As Death

Approved rendering: 爱情如死之坚强
Transliteration: àiqíng rú sǐ zhī jiānqiáng
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing; Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 爱情比死更有力 (deviates from established CUV phrasing, breaks canon-wide consistency)
Original: עַזָּה כַמָּוֶת אַהֲבָה
Category: Faithfulness and Longing / Covenant

New term, CUV convention. עַזָּה כַמָּוֶת אַהֲבָה (8:6). 坚强 connotes personal resilience/toughness in modern usage more than raw overpowering force; the CUV choice must be retained for consistency, but a note is required clarifying this describes love’s inherent power, not a lover’s fortitude in adversity.

Wealth Of House Hon

Approved rendering: 财宝
Transliteration: cáibǎo
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love; Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: 彩礼 (would directly and confusingly name the very custom being critiqued, rather than obliquely describing total household wealth), 金钱 (too narrow; loses the totality of ‘all the wealth of his house’)
Original: הוֹן
Category: Covenant / Marriage

New term, CUV convention. הוֹן (8:7). Directly intersects with the living Chinese custom of 彩礼 (bride-price/betrothal-gift exchange). Teaching notes must make explicit that the verse critiques any transactional view of love/marriage, since the connection to 彩礼 could otherwise read as an irrelevant non-sequitur or, worse, an endorsement of the very framework it rejects.

Medium Risk Terms

Church

Approved rendering: 教会
Transliteration: jiàohuì
Doctrine: Church as God’s People
Rejected alternatives: 庙, 寺, 道观

Established term. NEVER 庙/寺/道观. SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: maps to the allegorical referent of 新妇 (‘bride’, כַּלָּה) throughout the Traditional Allegorical Reading. Must be explicitly distinguished from the Chinese folk-ritual custom of 冥婚 (‘ghost marriage,’ completing a deceased person’s unfinished marital status) wherever this Church-as-Bride mapping is taught; see bride_kallah below.

David

Approved rendering: 大卫
Transliteration: Dàwèi
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant

CUV standard proper name form. SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: Solomon (所罗门, see solomon below), the book’s titular figure, is David’s son. Teaching materials should avoid over-identifying Solomon’s own historical royal glory with the divine Bridegroom of the Traditional Allegorical Reading, since the allegory rests on the Song’s poetic pattern rather than on Solomon’s personal moral record (cf. 1 Kings 11).

Peace

Approved rendering: 平安
Transliteration: píng’ān
Doctrine: Peace with God
Rejected alternatives: 安宁, 平安符式的平安

平安 is also the everyday greeting/blessing word for general safety and well-being. SONG OF SOLOMON NOTE: directly relevant to 8:10, where the woman describes herself, after her guarded exclusivity (the ‘wall’ image), as ‘one who finds peace’ (שָׁלוֹם). Teaching notes should connect this to relational wholeness achieved within a covenant of guarded exclusivity, not to the everyday good-fortune sense of 平安 used on protective amulets.

Song Of Songs Title

Approved rendering: 雅歌
Transliteration: Yǎgē
Doctrine: Superlative Canonical Status of the Song
Rejected alternatives: 歌中之歌 (literal calque of the Hebrew superlative; breaks with the established CUV title convention), 所罗门之歌 (foregrounds authorship, loses the superlative ‘supreme song’ sense)
Original: שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים
Category: Book Identity

New term for Song of Solomon curriculum. 雅歌 (‘elegant/refined song’) is the established CUV book title, chapter 1:1. It does not reproduce the Hebrew superlative construction (שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים, ‘song of songs’ = the supreme/greatest song, the same grammatical pattern as ‘Holy of Holies’). A teaching note explaining this superlative construction is required to establish the book’s elevated canonical status, which grounds the Traditional Allegorical Reading tradition.

My Beloved Dodi

Approved rendering: 我良人
Transliteration: wǒ liángrén
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 我的爱人 (modern secular register, breaks CUV literary continuity), 我的男朋友 (anachronistic dating-register)
Original: דּוֹדִי
Category: Marriage

New term. דּוֹדִי, the woman’s primary term of address for the man, used 26+ times throughout the book. Established CUV rendering, elevated/archaic in modern Mandarin; requires glossing for readers unfamiliar with the term.

My Darling Rayati

Approved rendering: 我的佳偶
Transliteration: wǒ de jiā’ǒu
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 我的爱人 (loses companionate-friendship nuance), 我的女朋友 (anachronistic dating-register)
Original: רַעְיָתִי
Category: Marriage

New term. רַעְיָתִי, the man’s term for the woman (first 1:9, 15), combining intimacy with companionship. 佳偶 can sound formal/literary (‘ideal match’); a note distinguishing ‘well-matched spouse’ from mere romantic pairing is recommended.

Adjure Refrain

Approved rendering: 我嘱咐你们
Transliteration: wǒ zhǔfù nǐmen
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: 请不要 (too casual, loses oath-level solemnity)
Original: הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם
Category: Beauty and Desire

New term. הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם, a solemn oath-formula refrain addressed to the ‘daughters of Jerusalem’ (2:7; 3:5; 8:4), warning against awakening love prematurely. Must not be flattened into a casual request; flag as a deliberate structural marker across the book.

Palanquin Appiryon

Approved rendering: 华轿
Transliteration: huájiào
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: 轿子 (acceptable but less ceremonial than 华轿), 马车 (anachronistic Western-carriage image)
Original: אַפִּרְיוֹן
Category: Marriage

New term. אַפִּרְיוֹן (3:9), Solomon’s ceremonial wedding-procession litter. Evokes the traditional Chinese bridal sedan chair (花轿) — a useful cultural bridge, but note the role-reversal: this procession is for the bridegroom, not the bride.

This Is My Beloved My Friend

Approved rendering: 这是我的良人,这是我的朋友
Transliteration: zhè shì wǒ de liángrén, zhè shì wǒ de péngyou
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 这是我的爱人和伙伴 (伙伴 sounds businesslike/transactional)
Original: זֶה דוֹדִי וְזֶה רֵעִי
Category: Covenant

New term. זֶה דוֹדִי וְזֶה רֵעִי (5:16b), uniting romantic devotion with companionship. 朋友 is broad in modern usage and may read as an anticlimactic downgrade from the covenant-level companion (רֵעַ) sense intended; a note is recommended.

Awesome As Army With Banners

Approved rendering: 威武如展开旗帜的军队
Transliteration: wēiwǔ rú zhǎnkāi qízhì de jūnduì
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Rejected alternatives: 美若天仙 (domesticating cliché, loses martial-power imagery)
Original: אֲיֻמָּה כַּנִּדְגָּלוֹת
Category: Beauty and Desire

New term. אֲיֻמָּה כַּנִּדְגָּלוֹת (6:4, 10), military-derived imagery describing beauty as overwhelming, even fearsome. Unfamiliar convention in Mandarin without a brief contextual note; the doctrinal point (beauty as genuinely powerful, not decorative) should be drawn out explicitly.

Little Sister Literal

Approved rendering: 小妹子
Transliteration: xiǎo mèizi
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 我妹子 (would conflate with the endearment convention of sister_bride_endearment above, compounding the incest-taboo risk)
Original: אָחוֹת קְטַנָּה
Category: Family / Protection

New term. אָחוֹת קְטַנָּה (8:8), the woman’s brothers speaking literally of her at an earlier, not-yet-marriageable life stage. Must be explicitly distinguished from the sister-bride endearment convention (4:9-12) — this is literal kinship reference, not marital address.

Wall And Door

Approved rendering: 墙 / 门
Transliteration: qiáng / mén
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 防线 / 开放 (loses the concrete architectural imagery and its OT-wide resonance)
Original: חוֹמָה / דֶּלֶת
Category: Covenant / Exclusivity

New term. חוֹמָה / דֶּלֶת (8:9-10), metaphors for guarded chastity (wall) versus availability (door). Must be framed as leading to peace/wholeness (per the text’s own resolution, 8:10) rather than bare restriction, avoiding an unintended purity-as-cage reading.

Many Waters Floods

Approved rendering: 众水 / 大水
Transliteration: zhòng shuǐ / dà shuǐ
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Rejected alternatives: 很多水 (flattens the ANE chaos-waters poetic convention into a literal quantity)
Original: מַיִם רַבִּים / נְהָרוֹת
Category: Faithfulness and Longing

New term, CUV convention. מַיִם רַבִּים / נְהָרוֹת (8:7), images of overwhelming chaos and uncontrollable force in Hebrew poetic convention (cf. Psalm 93:3-4), not merely literal quantities of water. A note on the convention preserves the intended sense of overwhelming, uncontrollable threat.

Utterly Despised

Approved rendering: 藐视
Transliteration: miǎoshì
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 看不起 (too weak/colloquial for the emphatic infinitive-absolute construction)
Original: בּוֹז יָבוּזוּ לוֹ
Category: Covenant

New term, CUV convention. בּוֹז יָבוּזוּ לוֹ (8:7). The Hebrew emphatic construction’s intensity (‘utterly, totally’) should be preserved by pairing 藐视 with an intensifier (e.g., 全然/完全) rather than a single flat verb.

Approved rendering: 他以爱为旗在我以上
Transliteration: tā yǐ ài wéi qí zài wǒ yǐshàng
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Rejected alternatives: 爱的旌旗 (archaic/unfamiliar variant; prefer established CUV phrasing)
Original: וְדִגְלוֹ עָלַי אַהֲבָה
Category: Covenant

New term, CUV convention. וְדִגְלוֹ עָלַי אַהֲבָה (2:4), ‘his banner over me was love’ — military-processional imagery for a publicly displayed, protective claim. Unfamiliar convention in Mandarin without a brief note preserving the sense of public, protective, proudly-displayed devotion.

Low Risk Terms

Vineyard Kerem

Approved rendering: 葡萄园
Transliteration: pútáoyuán
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design; Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Original: כֶּרֶם
Category: Metaphor

New term. כֶּרֶם, a recurring metaphor for the woman’s own body/self and for the marriage relationship as something stewarded and guarded (1:6; 2:15; 4:16; 7:12; 8:11-12). Flag its recurring symbolic (not literal) sense at each occurrence.

Little Foxes

Approved rendering: 小狐狸
Transliteration: xiǎo húlí
Doctrine: Exclusive and Covenantal Love
Original: שׁוּעָלִים הַקְּטַנִּים
Category: Metaphor

New term. שׁוּעָלִים הַקְּטַנִּים (2:15), a famous interpretive crux (threats to budding love vs. pastoral scenery). No independent translation risk beyond exegetical ambiguity, which teaching notes should acknowledge without forcing a single reading.

Wedding Crown Atarah

Approved rendering: 冠冕
Transliteration: guānmiǎn
Doctrine: The Goodness of Marital Love and Intimacy
Rejected alternatives: 花冠 (too casual/floral, loses royal-honor connotation)
Original: עֲטָרָה
Category: Marriage

New term. עֲטָרָה (3:11), the crown with which Solomon’s mother crowned him on his wedding day. Standard term, minimal collision risk; reinforces marriage’s inaugural celebration as legitimate joy, not mere duty.

Shulammite

Approved rendering: 书拉密女
Transliteration: Shūlāmì nǚ
Doctrine: Descriptive Royal and Pastoral Imagery
Original: שׁוּלַמִּית
Category: Proper Name

New term. שׁוּלַמִּית (6:13), the woman’s name/epithet, appearing only here. Established CUV transliteration; minimal doctrinal risk.

Death Mavet

Approved rendering:
Transliteration:
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Original: מָוֶת
Category: Faithfulness and Longing

New term. מָוֶת (8:6). Cross-culturally universal image of inevitability; minimal independent collision risk, though it anchors the higher-risk Sheol term in synonymous parallelism.

Quench Sweep Away

Approved rendering: 息灭 / 淹没
Transliteration: xímiè / yānmò
Doctrine: Faithfulness and Longing
Original: כָּבָה / שָׁטַף
Category: Faithfulness and Longing

New term. כָּבָה / שָׁטַף (8:7), decisive total-defeat verbs. Standard, unambiguous vocabulary with minimal collision risk.

Solomon

Approved rendering: 所罗门
Transliteration: Suǒluómén
Doctrine: Descriptive Royal and Pastoral Imagery
Original: שְׁלֹמֹה
Category: Proper Name

New term. שְׁלֹמֹה, the book’s titular royal figure. Established CUV transliteration; proper name with minimal doctrinal risk on its own. Teaching notes should avoid over-identifying Solomon’s historical royal glory with the divine Bridegroom of the allegorical reading.

Daughters Of Jerusalem

Approved rendering: 耶路撒冷的众女子
Transliteration: Yēlùsālěng de zhòng nǚzǐ
Doctrine: Descriptive Royal and Pastoral Imagery
Original: בְּנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַם
Category: Literary Device

New term. בְּנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַם, a female chorus device addressed repeatedly, especially in the adjuration refrain (2:7; 3:5; 8:4) and the woman’s body-description passages (5:9; 6:1). Standard proper-noun-based collective term; minimal doctrinal risk.

North And South Wind

Approved rendering: 北风啊,兴起!南风啊,吹来!
Transliteration: běifēng a, xīngqǐ! nánfēng a, chuī lái!
Doctrine: Beauty and Desire within God’s Design
Original: עוּרִי צָפוֹן וּבוֹאִי תֵימָן
Category: Beauty and Desire

New term. עוּרִי צָפוֹן וּבוֹאִי תֵימָן (4:16), the woman’s invitation to consummation via garden-fragrance imagery. Minimal independent collision risk; should be read alongside the higher-risk ‘garden locked’ (4:12) and ‘eat, friends, drink’ (5:1) terms as part of a single invitation-to-consummation sequence.
