Linguistic Gap Analysis

06 — Linguistic Gap Analysis: Joshua (English → Mandarin)

0. Purpose and Method

Romans supplied a Language Package built around forensic soteriology (justification, grace, sanctification) confronting Confucian moral-cultivation and Buddhist merit-accounting worldviews. Joshua is a narrative conquest-and-covenant book, and it stresses a substantially different set of semantic fault lines in Mandarin:

  • Chinese folk pantheon crowding (city gods, kitchen god, ancestral spirits, martial deities such as 关帝) collides with Joshua’s dense field of named rival deities and its insistence on exclusive worship (24:14-15).
  • Chinese geomancy and land-power concepts (风水) collide with “promised land” and “inheritance.”
  • Chinese divination culture (求签/抽签, 对天发誓) collides with lot-casting and oath-taking.
  • Chinese martial/heroic culture (武侠, 关帝信仰) collides with courage-in-battle and holy-war material.
  • Chinese funerary and Buddhist-cessation vocabulary (安息主怀, 涅槃/解脱) collides with “rest.”
  • Chinese karmic-retribution folk logic (报应) collides with divine judgment, wrath, and Achan’s sin.
  • The Romans-established Critical distinction between 拣选 (God’s election of persons) and ordinary human choice becomes newly load-bearing because Joshua 24:15 requires the human verb “choose” — the semantic mirror-image of 拣选 — in the single most quoted verse of the curriculum.

This document catalogs, doctrine by doctrine, the available Mandarin vocabulary, its weaknesses, and the recommended fencing/coining strategy; it then separates true vocabulary gaps (no adequate existing term) from crowded neighborhoods (adequate term exists but must be fenced against a strong competing association); it records transliteration-vs-paraphrase decisions for proper nouns and technical terms; and it closes with a ranked list of the curriculum’s highest-risk ambiguities for Phase 2 escalation routing.

1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix

#DoctrineAvailable Mandarin Term(s)Weaknesses / Collision RiskRecommended Strategy
1God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise应许 (promise), 地/应许之地 (land), 产业/地业 (inheritance), 信实/应验 (faithfulness/fulfillment)产业 collides with modern “industry/business assets” (secular self-made-wealth reading). 地 alone invites 风水 (feng shui) geomantic land-power associations. 信实 alone risks softening into 天意-style fatalism (“whatever happens was always going to happen”) if not tied to a named, personal, prior promise.Always pair 应许之地 with explicit patriarchal-oath backstory on first use per lesson. Gloss 产业 with “God-allotted portion received by lot, not earned” on first occurrence per chapter cluster (13-21). Anchor 信实/应验 to the narrator’s specific 21:45 declaration rather than teaching it as an abstract attribute.
2Holy War and Divine Judgment当毁灭的物 (herem), 尽行毁灭 (utterly destroy), 耶和华为…争战 (LORD fights for Israel), 神的怒气 (wrath of God)Highest collision risk in the curriculum: without careful fencing, readers may default to (a) impersonal karmic retribution (报应), (b) generalized ethnic/religious violence, or (c) triumphalist nationalism reading Israel’s military success as self-generated glory. No existing Mandarin theological term carries the narrow judicial-judgment sense unassisted.Coin/retain descriptive compounds rather than a single loaded noun; require a standing translator’s doctrinal footnote on every occurrence (per doctrine_risk_registry conventions, Critical, human theologian review). Never let 尽行毁灭 stand without the accompanying clause identifying it as God’s specific, time-bound judicial act against entrenched covenant-breaking and idolatry.
3Courage through God’s Presence刚强壮胆 (be strong and courageous), 离弃 (forsake/abandon, negated)刚强壮胆 risks assimilation to the wǔxiá (武侠) self-cultivated-bravado ideal, or to Confucian junzi self-discipline, both of which locate courage’s source in the person rather than in a divine promise.Always co-locate the courage imperative with its grounding clause (“for the LORD your God is with you,” 1:9) in teaching materials; never present 刚强壮胆 as a stand-alone virtue-exhortation divorced from divine presence.
4Rahab and the Inclusion of the Nations by Faith信心 (faith, REUSE), 外邦人 (nations/Gentiles, REUSE), 妓女 (harlot), 恩慈/慈爱 (chesed-kindness), 喇合 (Rahab)信心 reused correctly, but its object (Israel’s God specifically) is easy to lose in a narrative about a foreign woman with no prior covenant standing — risk of reading her “faith” as generic shrewd self-preservation rather than covenantal trust. 恩慈/慈爱 risks collapsing into transactional bargaining language (a negotiated deal for safety) if the grace-parallel is not made explicit.Require explicit statement of faith’s object (“Israel’s God specifically”) every time Rahab’s confession (2:9-11) is taught. Frame 恩慈 as covenant loyalty extended by grace in response to faith, structurally parallel to (but distinct from) 恩典. Do not euphemize 妓女 — the narrative’s rhetorical shock (least-likely candidate) is the doctrinal point.
5Covenant Renewal at Shechem事奉 (serve/worship), 选择 (choose), 拣选 (election, background contrast only), 别神/外邦的神 (foreign gods), 敬畏 (fear), 诚实 (sincerity), 忌邪的神 (jealous God)This is the single densest doctrinal cluster in the curriculum (core passage 24:14-15) and carries the sharpest false-friend risk in the whole book: 选择 vs 拣选 point in opposite directions (human decision vs. divine election of persons) but a careless translator could reach for 拣选 by habit, since it is the Romans-established “choice” term. 事奉/服事 is used generically in folk religion for serving any deity among many. 别神 risks a henotheistic reading (YHWH as merely the best among several legitimate gods) in a culture with a populated folk pantheon. 忌邪的神 risks reading as territorial deity-competition (庙产/香火之争) rather than unique holiness.Hard rule: 拣选 NEVER renders Joshua 24:15’s “choose” — this must be flagged as a standing Critical-tier forbidden substitution specific to this curriculum, parallel in severity to the Romans forbidden-substitution list. Every occurrence of 事奉 in 24:14-15 must retain exclusivity language in surrounding text (explicitly ruling out “worship among options”). 别神 must always be glossed as counterfeit/non-existent, never as a lesser but real deity. 忌邪的神 requires a footnote distinguishing covenant-jealousy (grounded in holiness and covenant love) from peer-deity status competition.
6Obedience and the Conquest律法 (law, REUSE), 罪 (sin, REUSE), 祝福/咒诅 (blessing/curse), 割礼 (circumcision), 逃城 (cities of refuge)罪 in Achan’s episode (ch. 7) risks a 报应 (impersonal karmic retribution, fortune/lineage-transferable) reading of the corporate consequence to the whole camp, rather than covenant solidarity under a personal God. 祝福/咒诅 risks assimilation to folk-magical talisman/incantation technique (符咒) if presented as automatic mechanism rather than covenant-legal sanction pronounced by a personal God.Teach Achan’s sin explicitly as covenant transgression against a personal God with corporate covenant consequences, not karma-transfer across lineage. Frame 祝福/咒诅 as God’s judicial response to covenant fidelity/infidelity, publicly read (ch. 8), not ritual mechanism.
7Rest in the Promised Land as a Type of Salvation Rest安息 (rest)Direct collision with the standard Chinese Christian and folk-funerary phrase 安息主怀 (“resting in the Lord’s bosom,” said of the deceased) and, more broadly, with Buddhist cessation/nirvana-adjacent vocabulary (涅槃, 寂灭) that some readers may associate with “final rest from suffering.” Risk of readers hearing 安息 as either a euphemism for death or an escape-from-suffering concept, rather than covenantal land-rest from war/wandering with a later typological (not literal) extension.Sequence teaching strictly: (1) establish 安息 first as this-worldly military/wandering cessation upon land-possession (1:13,15; 11:23; 21:44; 22:4); (2) only then introduce the NT typological extension (Hebrews 4) to eschatological salvation-rest, explicitly marked as typology, not equivalence; (3) explicitly deny both the funerary-euphemism reading and the Buddhist-cessation reading in a standing footnote wherever the term first appears in each new lesson unit.

2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods

2.1 True Gaps (no adequate existing Mandarin theological term — coinage/compound required)

TermGap DescriptionResolution
herem / cherem (“the devoted thing”)No existing Chinese Christian or general-register term captures “an object/population placed under a binding vow of total destruction/consecration, from which no plunder may be personally taken.” CUV renders contextually and inconsistently across OT books.Standardize on the descriptive compound 当毁灭的物 (lit. “the thing that ought to be destroyed”) for the noun and 尽行毁灭 for the verbal action, both requiring the accompanying judicial-judgment framing footnote on every occurrence. This is a curriculum-specific coinage-by-compound, not a borrowing from an existing semantic field — deliberately chosen to avoid all existing candidate terms (报应, 天谴, 灭族), each of which imports either karmic-retribution or ethnic-collective-punishment readings.
Commander of the LORD’s army (שַׂר־צְבָא יְהוָה)No standing CUV single-word equivalent; risk of reaching for an existing martial-deity title (e.g., 元帅, associated with 关帝/关公 devotion, or 天兵天将 folk-Daoist celestial-soldier imagery).Use the transparent descriptive compound 耶和华军队的元帅 (lit. “the commander-in-chief of YHWH’s army”) rather than a single honorific title, explicitly subordinating the figure to YHWH within the phrase itself so it cannot be misread as an independent martial deity.
”Rest” as land-rest → salvation-rest typologyThe typological bridge between this-worldly land-rest and eschatological salvation-rest has no ready-made Mandarin phrase; 安息 alone carries only the this-worldly or funerary sense. No new term coined; instead a teaching-sequence requirement (see matrix row 7) supplies the missing typological bridge through explanatory scaffolding rather than vocabulary substitution.
Inheritance-by-lot as covenant gift (as opposed to earned or purchased land)产业/地业 exists but carries no built-in signal that the allotment was received by God’s sovereign direction rather than earned by conquest. No new noun coined; gap closed by mandatory collocation with 拈签/在耶和华面前 (“before the LORD”) language whenever 产业 is introduced in chs. 13-21, making the gift-by-allotment structure explicit through syntax rather than lexical choice.

2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods (adequate term exists, but shares space with a strong competing association that must be fenced)

Mandarin TermCrowding Competitor(s)Fencing Requirement
神 (God)Populated folk pantheon (city gods, kitchen god, local temple deities); 别神/外邦的神 in the very same passage names literal rival godsExplicit monotheistic framing required wherever 神 appears alongside 别神 in 24:14-24; teaching must state plainly that the rival “gods” are counterfeit/non-existent, not a lesser tier of the same category as 神.
约 (covenant)Ordinary commercial contract 合同/契约; also applied within Joshua itself to both the divine covenant and the Gibeonite treaty (ch. 9)Teach the ch. 9 treaty explicitly as an oath sworn in YHWH’s name, not a mere contract, to explain why Israel is bound despite the Gibeonites’ deception.
产业 (inheritance)Modern secular “industry / business assets” homonym fieldFirst-occurrence gloss required in every lesson touching chs. 13-21: “a covenantal gift received by allotment, not self-generated wealth.”
安息 (rest)安息主怀 funerary idiom; Buddhist 涅槃/寂灭 cessation conceptsSee matrix row 7 sequencing requirement.
事奉 (serve/worship)Generic folk usage 事奉神明 (“serve/honor any deity”)Exclusivity language required in surrounding co-text every occurrence in 24:14-15.
选择 / 拣选 (choose / election)Habitual translator reflex to reach for the Romans-established 拣选 for any “choice” vocabularyHard forbidden-substitution rule (see §4, Rank 1 below); 拣选 restricted to God’s election of persons only, never to Joshua 24:15’s human decision.
拈签/签 (cast lots)求签/抽签 temple fortune-stick divination, a live, widely practiced folk customEvery occurrence must state the outcome is submitted to God’s sovereign direction “before the LORD,” not read as fate-divination technique.
忌邪的神 (jealous God)庙产/香火之争 — folk-deity territorial competition over worship/incense rights among peer supernatural beingsFootnote required distinguishing covenant-jealousy (rooted in unique holiness and covenant love) from peer-deity status rivalry.
刚强壮胆 (be strong and courageous)武侠/关帝 self-cultivated martial bravado idealAlways co-locate with the divine-presence grounding clause; never present as stand-alone virtue.
起誓 (oath)对天发誓 — folk oath-taking invoking impersonal HeavenSpecify the oath is sworn in YHWH’s specific name; his character, not an impersonal Heaven’s, is at stake.
罪 (sin) / 神的怒气 (wrath)报应 — impersonal karmic retribution, transferable across fortune/lineageAchan narrative (ch. 7) must frame corporate consequence as covenant solidarity under a personal God, never karma-transfer.
记念石 (memorial stones)墓碑 — ancestral grave stelaeLight distinction sufficient: these stones commemorate God’s redemptive act/covenant event, not deceased ancestors.
约柜 (Ark of the Covenant)神轿 (folk deity sedan-chair in temple processions), 神主牌 (ancestral spirit tablet)Teach as a covenant-sign container that accompanies, never confines or houses, God’s presence — contra a spirit-vessel reading.
祭司 (priests)道士 (Daoist ritual masters), 僧侣/和尚 (Buddhist monks)Distinguish office: mediates covenant relationship under the Law with the one true God, not exorcism/fortune-telling/merit-generating ritual.
割礼 (circumcision)Any latent merit-earning-rite readingTeach strictly as covenant identity-sign, not a work generating standing before God.

3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions

3.1 Transliterate (retain CUV-established phonetic forms — no paraphrase)

EnglishMandarinRationale
Joshua约书亚 (Yuēshūyà)Established, orthographically distinct from 耶稣; retains proper-name status while requiring a pedagogical (not lexical) note on the Iēsous/Yehoshua etymological link — see §4 Rank 3.
Rahab喇合 (Lāhé)CUV-established; no viable alternative rendering exists or is needed.
Shechem示剑 (Shìjiàn)CUV-established place name.
Jordan (River)约旦河 (Yuēdànhé)CUV-established; echoes the Red Sea crossing narrative, so consistency with Exodus vocabulary matters if cross-referenced.
Amorites亚摩利人 (Yàmólìrén)CUV-established ethnonym.
Passover逾越节 (Yúyuèjié)CUV-established festival name; no theological ambiguity.
Levites利未人 (Lìwèi rén)CUV-established tribal name.

Decision rule: all proper nouns and established festival/office names use the CUV transliterated form without exception, consistent with the Romans baseline’s transliteration standards section. No new transliterations are introduced for Joshua; every proper noun in this curriculum already has a stable CUV form.

3.2 Paraphrase / Descriptive Compound (deliberately avoid single-word transliteration or borrowed-term shortcuts)

ConceptChosen RenderingWhy Not Transliterate / Why Not Borrow an Existing Single Term
herem当毁灭的物 (paraphrase)No Hebrew-derived transliteration tradition exists in Chinese Bible usage (unlike 阿们, 哈利路亚); a bare transliteration would communicate nothing to the reader and forfeits the chance to build the judicial-judgment framing into the term itself.
utterly destroy尽行毁灭 (paraphrase)Same rationale; verbal-action pairing with 当毁灭的物.
Commander of the LORD’s army耶和华军队的元帅 (descriptive compound)Avoids borrowing 元帅/大将军 alone, which would read as an independent title; the full compound subordinates the figure explicitly to YHWH.
jealous God忌邪的神 (established CUV compound, retained)Already a stable CUV rendering; retained rather than replaced, but flagged High risk requiring a fencing footnote (see §2.2) rather than a new coinage.
rest (typological sense)安息 + explanatory typological scaffolding (no separate term coined for the eschatological extension)Coining a distinct term for “eschatological rest” apart from “land rest” would sever the very typological link (Hebrews 4 reads OT rest forward) that the doctrine requires readers to see; the single term with staged teaching is preferred over two different translated words.
cast lots拈签 / 签 (CUV-established, retained — not a new coinage, but flagged here because a paraphrase alternative was considered and rejected)A paraphrase such as “在神面前决定” (deciding before God) was considered but rejected as too vague to convey the specific mechanical procedure (casting lots) that chs. 7 and 13-21 describe; retaining the concrete CUV term with a strong fencing footnote against 求签/抽签 was judged superior to vaguer paraphrase.

General principle applied throughout: where the theological stakes are highest and no existing single Chinese term is safe (herem, Commander of the LORD’s army), this analysis prefers a transparent multi-character descriptive compound over either (a) a bare transliteration (which would be opaque) or (b) borrowing an existing culturally-loaded single term (which would import unwanted associations). Where an existing CUV term is already stable and merely requires defensive footnoting (拈签, 忌邪的神, 约柜), this analysis retains the existing term rather than replacing it, consistent with the Romans baseline’s practice of minimal deviation from CUV precedent.

4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities

Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × probability of collision given Mandarin’s existing semantic neighborhoods), for Phase 2 escalation routing per doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions.

  1. 选择 vs. 拣选 in Joshua 24:15 (Critical). The single highest-probability error in this entire curriculum: a translator or reviewer trained on the Romans baseline’s correct instinct to reach for 拣选 for “choice”/“election” vocabulary could easily misapply it to Joshua 24:15’s human “choose you this day whom you will serve,” inverting the direction of agency at the exact rhetorical climax of the core passage. Recommend: add to the curriculum’s forbidden-substitution list at Critical tier, with automated validation flagging any occurrence of 拣选 within 3 verses of 24:15 for mandatory human theologian review.

  2. 当毁灭的物 / 尽行毁灭 collapsing into 报应 (karmic retribution) or generalized religious-violence readings (Critical). Highest doctrinal stakes in the book; the entire holy-war material (chs. 6-11) is vulnerable to being read either as capricious/impersonal cosmic payback or as a timeless license for religious violence, both of which the doctrine explicitly denies. Recommend: standing footnote required on every occurrence, human theologian review for every occurrence, per doctrine_risk_registry conventions.

  3. 约书亚 (Joshua) / 耶稣 (Jesus) typological confusion (Medium-High pedagogically, though textually low-risk). Orthographically and phonetically the two names are fully distinct, so in-text mistranslation risk is low; but the shared Hebrew root (“YHWH saves”) invites a teaching-level risk of implying identity between Joshua and Christ, or diminishing Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship (a Critical-tier doctrine in the Romans baseline). Recommend: every lesson invoking the Joshua/Jesus typology must carry an explicit disclaimer statement distinguishing type from fulfillment.

  4. 安息 read as funerary euphemism or Buddhist cessation rather than covenantal land-rest (High). Because 安息主怀 is the standard Chinese Christian phrase for a believer’s death, and 涅槃/寂灭 are live Buddhist concepts for cessation of suffering, readers may default to either association well before the typological extension to Hebrews 4 is introduced. Recommend: mandatory teaching-sequence order (this-worldly rest first, typological extension second, both funerary and Buddhist-cessation readings explicitly denied) as specified in §1 row 7.

  5. 别神/外邦的神 read henotheistically (High). In a culture with an actively populated folk pantheon, “other gods” is easily heard as “other real but inferior/local gods” rather than “counterfeit or non-existent objects of worship” — softening the core passage’s exclusivity claim toward a “YHWH is simply the best available option” reading. Recommend: every occurrence requires an explicit ontological-status gloss (counterfeit/non-existent, not merely inferior).

  6. 产业/地业 read as secular self-made wealth or business assets (High). The modern-Mandarin homonym field for 产业 is strong enough (a term any secular reader uses daily for “industry” or “assets”) that without a gloss, chs. 13-21’s allotment narrative risks losing its grace-parallel entirely and reading as an inventory of conquered real estate. Recommend: first-occurrence gloss per lesson-cluster, as specified in §2.2.

  7. 拈签/签 read as temple fortune-stick divination (High). 求签/抽签 is a live, common devotional practice at Chinese temples; without fencing, lot-casting “before the LORD” risks being assimilated to a fate-divination technique the text itself intends to contrast (cf. the Romans baseline’s parallel caution against 缘分/命运 under “election”). Recommend: standing fencing footnote on every occurrence in chs. 7 and 13-21.

  8. 刚强壮胆 read as self-cultivated martial/heroic virtue (Medium-High). Chinese narrative culture (wǔxiá fiction, 关帝 veneration) supplies a ready-made “brave hero” schema that would relocate the source of courage from divine promise to personal cultivation or martial skill. Recommend: mandatory co-location with the grounding clause (“for the LORD your God is with you”) in every teaching instance.

  9. 祝福/咒诅 read as magical talisman/incantation mechanism (Medium). 符咒 (talismans/incantations) is a familiar folk-practice category; without care, the Ebal covenant sanctions could be taught as an automatic ritual mechanism rather than the judicial pronouncement of a personal God responding to covenant fidelity or infidelity. Recommend: native-speaker review flag; frame explicitly as covenant-legal sanction, not ritual technique.

  10. 忌邪的神 read as territorial deity-competition (Medium). The folk-religious pattern of rival deities/temples competing for incense and worship rights (香火之争) could reframe God’s jealousy as status rivalry among peers rather than a function of unique holiness and covenant love. Recommend: standing fencing footnote; native-speaker review sufficient (not full theologian escalation), consistent with its Medium/High borderline placement in the term registry.

5. Summary and Handoff

This analysis identifies no true vocabulary gap that cannot be closed by a transparent Mandarin compound (herem, Commander of the LORD’s army) and no proper noun requiring a new transliteration (all Joshua proper nouns already have stable CUV forms). The dominant risk profile for this curriculum is not absence of vocabulary but crowding: strong, live competing associations in Chinese folk religion (populated pantheon, fortune-stick divination, ancestor veneration, karmic retribution, feng shui, martial-deity devotion) and in Buddhist/Neo-Confucian moral vocabulary (cessation, self-cultivated virtue) that must be actively fenced every time an adequate Mandarin term is used.

All vocabulary decisions recorded here have been encoded into assets/bible_term_registry.json (Joshua additions) and analysis/08_core_glossary.md, and must be loaded alongside the Romans baseline translation_memory.json before any Phase 2 segment translation of Joshua begins. The forbidden-substitution rule established in Rank 1 above (拣选 never renders Joshua 24:15’s “choose”) should be added to the Phase 2 AI instruction set’s Critical Forbidden Substitutions list at the next revision of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md.
