Cross-Reference Analysis

09 Cross-Reference Analysis — Daniel (English → Mandarin)

Methodological Note

This analysis catalogs every identifiable Old Testament quotation, allusion, and thematic echo within Daniel, every messianic reference and typological pattern in Daniel, and every forward connection to New Testament fulfillment — with special attention to the Romans Language Package, since Romans is the other curriculum sharing this Mandarin Language Package and several Danielic terms and quotations recur there or in texts Romans itself depends on (e.g., Habakkuk 2:4 behind Romans 1:17; Genesis 15:6 behind Romans 4:3).

Citations are normalized throughout in Book Chapter:Verse form (e.g., “Daniel 7:13”, “Genesis 15:6”, “Romans 8:28”) for consistent machine cross-referencing in Phase 2.

Column definitions:

  • Passage — the Daniel reference under analysis (normalized citation).
  • Theme — which of the six curriculum doctrines it serves (abbreviated: SOV = God’s Sovereignty over Kings and Kingdoms; FAI = Faithfulness under Persecution; SOM = The Son of Man and Messianic Kingship; APO = Apocalyptic Prophecy and the End Times; PRA = Prayer and Perseverance in Exile; WIS = Wisdom and Discernment from God).
  • Related Character — the human, angelic, or divine figure(s) central to the passage.
  • OT/NT Connection — the specific quotation, allusion, or fulfillment passage, normalized.
  • Translation Sensitivity — the Mandarin rendering risk, cross-referencing 08_core_glossary.md term numbers (#) and the baseline translation_memory.json where applicable.

SECTION A: Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Reference Matrix

Chapter 1

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 1:1-2SOVNebuchadnezzar, DanielFulfills Jeremiah 25:1, 9-11 (Babylonian conquest as God’s judgment); echoes 2 Kings 24:1-2, 2 Chronicles 36:6-7被掳 (#22) must convey covenant discipline, not mere political misfortune; consistent with baseline’s caution against reading history fatalistically
Daniel 1:3-7SOV, WISDaniel, Hananiah, Mishael, AzariahEchoes Joseph in a foreign court (Genesis 39-41) and Moses raised in Pharaoh’s household (Exodus 2:10) — the “faithful exile in a pagan court” narrative typeCharacter name-pairs (Hebrew name / Babylonian court name) should retain CUV established transliterations: 但以理/伯提沙撒, 哈拿尼雅/沙得拉, 米沙利/米煞, 亚撒利雅/亚伯尼歌
Daniel 1:8FAI, WISDanielEchoes Levitical dietary distinctions (Leviticus 11) and Joseph’s covenant integrity in Potiphar’s house (Genesis 39:9)玷污 (#24) — covenant-loyalty statement, not ritual food purity in isolation; must not be read as Confucian dietary self-discipline or Buddhist vegetarian merit practice
Daniel 1:9PRA, SOVGod, the chief eunuchEchoes “the LORD was with Joseph” pattern (Genesis 39:21) — God sovereignly softening a pagan official’s dispositionLow risk; convey as God’s providential favor, not luck (福气, rejected under baseline “grace”)
Daniel 1:17, 20WISDaniel and companions, GodAnticipates Solomon’s divinely-given wisdom exceeding all others (1 Kings 4:29-34); foreshadows James 1:5 (“if any lacks wisdom, let him ask God”)智慧和聪明 (#25) must be taught as gift, not attainment; sets up sharp contrast with ch. 2’s occult professional class
Daniel 1:21APODanielChronological marker (“until the first year of King Cyrus”) anticipates the historical fulfillment of Jeremiah’s seventy-years prophecy, developed fully in Daniel 9:1-2Low risk; proper name consistency: 古列 (Cyrus, established CUV form)

Chapter 2

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 2:1-11WIS, SOVNebuchadnezzar, the Chaldean wise menEchoes Genesis 41’s Pharaoh-and-dreams narrative structurally, but inverts it: here the king demands the dream itself, not just its interpretation, exposing the wise men’s total impotence术士/行邪术的/迦勒底人 (#27) — must never be presented as spiritually neutral technicians; direct collision risk with 算命先生 already flagged in baseline “prophet” entry
Daniel 2:19-23WIS, PRADanielDaniel’s prayer of praise (2:20-23) echoes the Psalter’s wisdom-and-sovereignty doxologies (cf. Psalm 75:6-7 “promotion comes… from God,” Job 12:13, 22 “with him are wisdom and might… he reveals deep and hidden things”)奥秘 (#26) — retain “hidden matter disclosed by revelation” sense; do not collapse into divination vocabulary
Daniel 2:21SOVGodDirect forerunner of Daniel 4:17, 25, 32 (“the Most High rules… gives to whom he will”) and the entire “God removes/establishes kings” refrain running through the book; echoed in Romans 13:1 (“there is no authority except from God”)权柄 (#11) and 至高者…掌权 (#34) must be applied with the same providential (not fatalistic) force as in Romans’ governing-authorities passage; cross-reference required in teaching notes to Romans 13:1
Daniel 2:28, 47WIS, APOGod, Nebuchadnezzar”A God in heaven who reveals mysteries” anticipates the NT’s “mystery” vocabulary (Greek μυστήριον) in Romans 11:25 (“mystery” of Israel’s partial hardening), Romans 16:25 (“the mystery… now disclosed”), and Ephesians 3:3-6奥秘 (#26) — the same conceptual category (a hidden divine purpose disclosed only by revelation) links Daniel’s Aramaic raz to Paul’s Greek mystērion; teaching note should draw this line explicitly for the Mandarin reader, since this is not in the baseline TM as a standalone Romans entry but shares the same term 奥秘
Daniel 2:31-45SOV, APO, SOMNebuchadnezzar (dream), the stoneThe four-kingdom succession scheme is echoed and complemented by Daniel 7’s four-beast vision; “the stone… became a great mountain and filled the whole earth” (2:35) is widely read typologically alongside Isaiah 2:2-3 (“the mountain of the LORD’s house… established”) and as anticipating Christ’s kingdom (cf. Luke 20:17-18, quoting Psalm 118:22, applied by Jesus to himself as “the stone”)石头 (#29) — flag Messianic-typological resonance without asserting a single eschatological timetable; cross-reference Luke 20:17-18 and 1 Peter 2:6-8 (quoting Isaiah 28:16 and Psalm 118:22) in teaching notes
Daniel 2:44SOV, APO, SOMGod”A kingdom that shall never be destroyed” — must render identically to its parallel clause in Daniel 7:14 (see Section E below); anticipates Revelation 11:15 (“the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord”)永不败坏的国 (#14) — mandatory cross-chapter consistency; also connects to baseline’s 神的国 (kingdom_of_god) doctrine entry

Chapter 3

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 3:1-7FAINebuchadnezzarEchoes the first and second commandments (Exodus 20:3-5) prohibiting image-worship; the golden image inverts Genesis 1:27’s true “image” (tselem) of God in humanity金像 (#30) — idolatrous counterfeit “image,” conceptually opposed to Genesis 1:27’s tselem
Daniel 3:12, 14, 17-18FAIShadrach, Meshach, AbednegoDirect fulfillment-in-advance of the pattern in Exodus 20:5 (“you shall not bow down… or serve them”) and anticipates Revelation 13:15’s end-time image that “causes those who would not worship [it] to be slain”跪拜 (#31) vs. 敬拜 — maintain the distinction between coerced idol-prostration and exclusive God-directed worship; teaching note should draw the Revelation 13 parallel forward
Daniel 3:17-18FAI, PRAShadrach, Meshach, AbednegoModel of faith that trusts God’s power to deliver while submitting to his sovereign will if he does not (“but if not…”); echoed by Job’s “though he slay me, yet will I trust him” (Job 13:15) and by Jesus in Gethsemane (“not my will, but yours,” Luke 22:42)拯救 (#32) — this-life deliverance model; teaching should connect but not collapse into the full soteriological 救恩 category (baseline “salvation”)
Daniel 3:25, 28FAI, SOM (collision)Nebuchadnezzar, “one like a son of the gods”CRITICAL LEXICAL COLLISION. CUV’s 好像神的儿子 for the pagan king’s bar-‘elahin is visually identical to the baseline’s Critical Sonship-of-Christ term 神的儿子 (Romans 1:4). Some Christian traditions read this figure typologically as a pre-incarnate Christophany (comparable typological readings appear at Genesis 18:1-2, Joshua 5:13-15); others read it as an angel. Compare also the “angel of the LORD” who delivers in Exodus 3:2, Psalm 34:7好像神的儿子 (#17) — mandatory translator note on every occurrence per 08_core_glossary.md; must not be asserted dogmatically as either angel or Christophany in the translated text itself — the interpretive question belongs in teaching notes, not in the rendering
Daniel 3:29SOVNebuchadnezzarThe pagan king’s forced acknowledgment that “there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way” echoes the recurring OT pattern of foreign rulers confessing Israel’s God under compulsion (cf. Exodus 9:27, 1 Kings 20:23)Low risk

Chapter 4

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 4:10-17SOVNebuchadnezzar, “a watcher, a holy one”The great tree cut down echoes Ezekiel 31’s oracle against Pharaoh/Assyria as a felled cedar, and Isaiah 14’s oracle against Babylon’s king brought down from heaven守望者 (#33) — holy angelic being, distinct from ancestral spirits (祖灵) or folk guardian deities
Daniel 4:17, 25, 32SOVGod (the Most High)The book’s central sovereignty refrain; directly echoed by Mary’s Magnificat pattern of God exalting the humble and humbling the proud (Luke 1:52) and by Romans 13:1’s “there is no authority except from God”至高者…掌权 (#34) — must never collapse into 天意 or 命运 per baseline providence caution; cross-reference Romans 13:1 and Luke 1:52 explicitly in teaching notes
Daniel 4:30SOVNebuchadnezzarSelf-glorifying royal speech (“Is not this great Babylon, which I have built…?”) is the template for every later self-exalting-ruler figure in the book (the little horn, 7:8, 25; 8:25; 11:36) and echoed in Isaiah 14:13-14 (“I will ascend… I will make myself like the Most High”) and Acts 12:22-23 (Herod’s self-glorification and judgment)骄傲 (#35) — the pride-and-judgment pattern should be flagged as a recurring narrative type across the book
Daniel 4:34-37SOV, PRANebuchadnezzarThe restored king’s doxology (“I blessed the Most High… his kingdom endures… he does according to his will”) is the book’s first Gentile confession of God’s absolute sovereignty, anticipating the nations’ worship in Revelation 15:3-4 and Psalm 145:13’s “your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom”至高者 (#3) — anchor explicitly to 神 per baseline; the same Hebrew/Aramaic root behind “everlasting kingdom” here (מַלְכוּ עָלַם) should be flagged as parallel to Daniel 7:14 and Psalm 145:13
Daniel 4:8-9, 18WIS (collision)Nebuchadnezzar (of Daniel)The pagan king’s phrase “the spirit of the holy gods” (רוּח־אֱלָהִין קַדִּישִׁין) attributing Daniel’s insight to a polytheistic category圣神的灵 (#64) — must not be rendered identically to, or confused with, baseline’s 圣灵 (Holy Spirit); mandatory translator note distinguishing the pagan speaker’s own category from the narrative’s monotheistic understanding

Chapter 5

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 5:1-4FAI, SOVBelshazzarUse of the temple vessels taken in 2 Kings 25:14-15 / 2 Chronicles 36:18 for profane feasting is itself a culminating act of covenant-mockery, directly provoking judgmentLow risk; historical/narrative background
Daniel 5:11WIS (collision)Nebuchadnezzar (recalled), DanielRepeats the “spirit of the holy gods” phrase from ch. 4圣神的灵 (#64) — same collision caution as ch. 4 applies
Daniel 5:18-23SOVBelshazzar, DanielDaniel’s rebuke rehearses ch. 4’s sovereignty lesson (Nebuchadnezzar’s humbling) as a warning Belshazzar failed to heed — an explicit intra-book cross-reference the Mandarin translation should preserve by using identical vocabulary for “the Most High rules” as in ch. 4至高者…掌权 (#34) — reuse required for intra-book consistency
Daniel 5:25-28SOV, APOGod, BelshazzarThe writing on the wall functions as a direct, unmistakable divine verdict, paralleling the “books were opened” judgment-court imagery of Daniel 7:10审判 (#6) resonance — teaching note should connect this scene’s forensic character to Daniel 7:10’s heavenly court
Daniel 5:30-31SOV, APOBelshazzar, Darius the MedeImmediate historical fulfillment of the writing’s verdict “that very night” models the certainty of divinely-decreed judgment, later echoed in Revelation 18’s sudden fall of end-time “Babylon”Low risk; proper name 大利乌 established CUV form

Chapter 6

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 6:4-5FAIthe officials, DanielEchoes Psalm 37:32-33 (“the wicked watches for the righteous… but the LORD will not abandon him”) — persecution arising precisely because of exemplary faithfulnessLow risk
Daniel 6:10PRA, FAIDanielDaniel’s habitual prayer “toward Jerusalem” fulfills the pattern anticipated in Solomon’s temple dedication prayer (1 Kings 8:46-49, praying “toward this house” even in exile/captivity); models Romans 12:12’s “be constant in prayer” and Ephesians 6:18祷告 (#38) — distinguish from 求签/问卜 per baseline intercession caution and from ancestor-veneration rites
Daniel 6:16, 20FAI, SOMDarius, Daniel”The God whom I/you serve continually” uses the identical Aramaic root (pelach) later applied to the Son of Man’s universal worship in Daniel 7:14事奉 (#19) — mandatory identical rendering across Daniel 3, 6, and 7; see Section E
Daniel 6:22FAIGod, Daniel”My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths” echoes the angelic deliverance pattern of Exodus 3 (the angel of the LORD) and Psalm 34:7 (“the angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him”); typologically anticipated in the fiery-furnace deliverance of ch. 3Low risk; 天使 (angel) standard term, no baseline collision
Daniel 6:26-27SOVDariusDarius’s decree (“he is the living God, enduring forever, and his kingdom shall never be destroyed”) explicitly echoes 4:34-37’s Nebuchadnezzar doxology and anticipates the “everlasting kingdom” language of Daniel 2:44 and 7:14永不败坏的国 (#14) resonance — teaching note should flag this as a third occurrence of the same theological formula in different wording, reinforcing (not requiring verbatim identity here since the English/Hebrew wording differs slightly, but the underlying Mandarin term choices for “kingdom” and “never destroyed” should still draw from the same established vocabulary set)

Chapter 7 (Core Passage and Surrounding Context)

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 7:1-8SOV, APOthe four beastsEchoes and expands ch. 2’s four-kingdom scheme; the fourth beast’s “iron teeth” (7:7) echoes the iron portion of the statue’s legs (2:40)兽 (#8) — historical-succession framework, not zodiac/fengshui creature-omen
Daniel 7:9-10SOV, APOthe Ancient of DaysDirect source of Revelation 4:2-6’s throne-room vision (“a throne… and one seated on the throne”) and Revelation 20:11-12’s judgment-books scene (“the dead… judged by what was written in the books”); echoes Psalm 9:7-8 (God’s enduring judgment-throne) and 1 Kings 22:19 (the heavenly court)亘古常在者 (#4), 宝座 (#5), 案卷 (#7), 审判 (#6) — this entire cluster must be recognized by Mandarin readers as the direct textual ancestor of Revelation 4 and 20; teaching notes should make the Daniel→Revelation dependency explicit given both books’ shared apocalyptic genre
Daniel 7:13-14SOM (Critical)“one like a son of man,” the Ancient of DaysThe single most quoted OT verse by Jesus of himself. Direct verbal dependence in Matthew 24:30, Matthew 26:64, Mark 13:26, Mark 14:62 (“I am, and you will see the Son of Man… coming with the clouds of heaven”), Luke 21:27; also Acts 1:9-11 (ascension “cloud”), Revelation 1:7 (“he is coming with the clouds”), Revelation 1:13-14 (a “son of man” figure with imagery drawn directly from Daniel 7 and 10)人子 (#15) — Critical; every NT Gospel occurrence of “the Son of Man” as Jesus’ self-title must, in any Daniel-curriculum cross-reference note, be traced back to this verse using the identical established 人子 rendering already fixed in Chinese Gospel translation tradition
Daniel 7:14SOM, SOVthe Son of Man事奉 (worship-service, pelach) given to the Son of Man directly parallels Philippians 2:10-11 (“every knee should bow… every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord”) and Revelation 5:13-14’s universal worship of “him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb”事奉 (#19) — Critical; cross-reference Philippians 2:10-11 and Revelation 5:13 in teaching notes as NT realizations of this verse’s universal-worship claim; also connects directly to baseline’s Romans 10:9 lordship_of_christ doctrine (“Jesus is Lord,” 耶稣是主)
Daniel 7:18, 22, 27SOV, FAI”the saints of the Most High”Echoes Psalm 149:4-9 (the “saints” executing God’s judgment) and directly anticipates Revelation 5:10, 20:4 (“they will reign”) and Romans 8:17 (“if children, then heirs… fellow heirs with Christ”) — the corporate people of God co-inheriting the kingdom given to the Son of Man至高者的圣民 (#41) — High; lexical divergence from baseline’s 圣徒 requires explicit note (see 08_core_glossary.md); teaching should draw the Romans 8:17 co-heirship parallel explicitly
Daniel 7:25FAI, APOthe little horn”He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints… for a time, times, and half a time” is directly echoed in Revelation 12:14 (“time, and times, and half a time”) and 13:5-7 (the beast given authority “to make war on the saints”)小角 (#10) — High; cross-reference Revelation 12-13 explicitly; consistent rendering required across Daniel 7, 8, 11

Chapter 8

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 8:3-8APOthe ram, the goatExplicitly interpreted by Gabriel within the text itself (8:20-21) as Media-Persia and Greece — a rare case of the book supplying its own inspired historical key, reinforcing the doctrine that apocalyptic symbolism has real, verifiable historical referents公绵羊/公山羊 — Low risk on the terms themselves
Daniel 8:9-12APO, FAI”a little horn” (Antiochus IV Epiphanes type)Historically fulfilled in the 2nd-century BC desecration of the Jerusalem temple by Antiochus IV (cf. 1 Maccabees 1:41-64, outside the Protestant canon but historically illuminating); the pattern is reused by Jesus in Matthew 24:15 for a future desecration小角 (#10) — must render identically to Daniel 7:8, 7:11, 11:36 occurrences
Daniel 8:11-13APO”the daily sacrifice”Direct object of desecration; echoes Numbers 28:3-8’s institution of the continual burnt offering常献的祭 (#42) — authentic Mosaic covenant worship, not folk ancestor-sacrifice
Daniel 8:16APOGabrielSame angelic messenger reappears in Daniel 9:21 and, centuries later, in Luke 1:19, 26 (announcing John the Baptist’s and Jesus’ births) — a direct named-angel bridge from Daniel into the Gospel of Luke’s infancy narrative加百列 (#43) — established CUV transliteration; teaching note should flag the Luke 1 connection as a rare instance of an identically named heavenly messenger spanning Testaments
Daniel 8:17, 19, 26APOGabriel”The vision is for the time of the end” — establishes the “time of the end” (מוֹעֵד קֵץ) as a fixed technical phrase reused in 11:35, 40; 12:4, 9末期/末时 (#45) — High; must resist cyclical 治乱循环 reading
Daniel 8:25APO, SOVthe little horn”By his cunning… he shall exalt himself in his heart… and he shall be broken, but by no human hand” echoes Isaiah 14:12-15’s fall of the self-exalting king of Babylon, and anticipates 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4’s “man of lawlessness… who exalts himself”Teaching cross-reference; no new term

Chapter 9

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 9:2PRA, APODaniel, JeremiahDirect quotation-level dependence on Jeremiah 25:11-12 and Jeremiah 29:10 (“seventy years”); Daniel is explicitly reading and interpreting a prior prophetic text — one of Scripture’s clearest self-attested cases of one prophet studying another’s prophecy as authoritative revelation七十年 (#47) — Low; but the Jeremiah 25:11-12 / 29:10 dependency should be flagged explicitly as a direct citation, not merely an allusion
Daniel 9:3-19PRA, FAIDanielThe confession prayer draws extensively on covenant-curse language from Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28-30, and echoes Solomon’s temple-dedication prayer pattern (1 Kings 8:46-53) and Nehemiah 9:5-37’s corporate confession认罪 (#48), 约 (#49, baseline reuse), 慈爱/怜悯 (#50) — this prayer is a direct model for the doctrine “Prayer and Perseverance in Exile”; cross-reference Nehemiah 9 and 1 Kings 8 in teaching notes
Daniel 9:24-27SOM, APO (Critical)“an anointed one, a prince”Directly echoed/typologically fulfilled, per Christian tradition, in the Gospels’ passion narratives (the Messiah “cut off,” e.g. Mark 15:37 and parallels) and in the language of Hebrews 9:26 (“to put away sin”); the “abomination” clause is directly quoted by Jesus in Matthew 24:15 (“when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by the prophet Daniel”)七十个七 (#51, Critical), 受膏者 (#52, Critical, cross-Testament divergence from baseline’s 基督), 被剪除 (#53), 那行毁坏可憎的 (#54, Critical) — this entire cluster is the single densest concentration of Critical-risk Messianic vocabulary in the book; Matthew 24:15’s direct quotation of Daniel by name makes this the clearest explicit NT citation of Daniel anywhere in Scripture and must be flagged for identical phrase-level rendering (see Section E)

Chapter 10

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 10:2-3PRADanielThree-week fast echoes Moses’ fasts on Sinai (Exodus 34:28) and anticipates Jesus’ forty-day wilderness fast (Matthew 4:2) as a pattern of intensified seeking of God before revelation/testing禁食 (#58) — distinguish from merit-earning ascetic fasting
Daniel 10:5-6SOM (disputed), APO”a man clothed in linen”The description (body like beryl, face like lightning, eyes like flaming torches, voice like a multitude) is verbally echoed in Revelation 1:13-16’s vision of the glorified Christ and in Ezekiel 1:26-28’s throne-vision; also compared to the “man” of Ezekiel 9:2-3一个人穿着细麻衣 (#55) — High; the identity debate (angel vs. pre-incarnate Christophany) should be presented honestly in teaching notes with explicit cross-reference to Revelation 1:13-16’s clear verbal parallels, without the translation itself resolving the debate
Daniel 10:13, 21SOV, APOMichaelFirst OT appearance of Michael by name as “one of the chief princes,” reappearing in Daniel 12:1 and later in Jude 1:9 (disputing with the devil over Moses’ body) and Revelation 12:7 (war in heaven)米迦勒 (#56) — established CUV transliteration; cross-reference Jude 1:9 and Revelation 12:7
Daniel 10:13, 20SOV, APO”prince of Persia,” “prince of Greece”Depicts real spiritual conflict behind geopolitical history; conceptually parallel to Ephesians 6:12 (“rulers… authorities… cosmic powers… spiritual forces of evil”) and Ephesians 3:10 (“rulers and authorities in the heavenly places”)掌权者/灵界的力量 (#57) — High; not an independent territorial deity; cross-reference Ephesians 6:12

Chapter 11

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 11:1-35APOkings of the North and SouthDetailed historical prophecy of the Ptolemaic-Seleucid conflicts, historically fulfilled with remarkable precision (widely documented by the 2nd-century BC events surrounding Antiochus IV)北方的王/南方的王 (#59) — Low; reinforces the “linear, verifiable prophecy fulfillment” pattern established in ch. 8, directly relevant to the doctrine “Apocalyptic Prophecy and the End Times” as real predictive history, not vague symbolism
Daniel 11:31APOthe end-time/Antiochene kingReuses “the abomination that causes desolation” (#54) verbatim from Daniel 9:27, itself directly quoted by Jesus in Matthew 24:15; also echoed in Mark 13:14那行毁坏可憎的 (#54) — Critical; mandatory identical rendering across Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11, and Matthew 24:15/Mark 13:14
Daniel 11:36-39SOV, APOthe end-time king”He shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods” is widely read as a template later drawn on in 2 Thessalonians 2:4 (“opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god… proclaiming himself to be God”) and Revelation 13:5-6Teaching cross-reference; no new glossary term — reuses ch. 4’s pride/self-exaltation motif (#35)
Daniel 11:40-45APOkings of North and SouthFinal unresolved historical/eschatological episode; interpreters divide on whether this transitions from strict historical fulfillment (Antiochus IV) to a purely future end-time figureTeaching note only; do not let the translation encode a single interpretive scheme

Chapter 12

PassageThemeRelated CharacterOT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Daniel 12:1SOV, APOMichael”A time of trouble, such as never has been” is directly quoted by Jesus in Matthew 24:21 (“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now”) and Mark 13:19米迦勒 (#56, reuse); the “time of trouble” phrase itself should be cross-referenced to Matthew 24:21 as a near-verbatim NT quotation
Daniel 12:2APO (Critical)“many… who sleep in the dust of the earth”The OT’s clearest single statement of bodily resurrection to two destinies; directly undergirds John 5:28-29 (“all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out… to the resurrection of life… of judgment”) and is the same doctrinal category as Romans 6:4-5, 8:11’s resurrection-with-Christ theology复活 (#60, BASELINE REUSE, Critical) — NEVER 轮回/投胎/还魂; must be explicitly taught as the OT anchor text for the identical doctrine governed by the baseline’s Critical resurrection entry, reused verbatim across Daniel 12:2, John 5:28-29, and Romans 6:4-5, 8:11
Daniel 12:3WIS, APO”the wise” (maskilim)Echoes Isaiah 52:13/53:11’s Suffering Servant “shall act wisely” (same root, sakal) and anticipates Matthew 13:43 (“the righteous will shine like the sun”)智慧人必发光 (#63) — distinguish God-revealed wisdom from Buddhist prajñā-style meditative attainment
Daniel 12:4, 9APOthe sealed bookReuses ch. 8’s sealing motif; directly contrasted by Revelation 22:10 (“Do not seal up the words of the prophecy… for the time is near”) — the NT’s final apocalypse deliberately reverses Daniel’s sealing instruction now that the time has drawn near封住 (#46, reuse) — teaching note should flag the Revelation 22:10 contrast (unsealing) as a deliberate canonical bookend
Daniel 12:7, 11-12APO“Time, times, and half a time” and the numbered days (1,290 / 1,335) directly echo Daniel 7:25’s identical time-formula and are reused in Revelation 11:2-3, 12:6, 12:14, 13:5Numerical/time-formula consistency — render literally without collapsing into a single calendar scheme, consistent with the “seventy sevens” caution (#51)

The fiery furnace (ch. 3) and lions’ den (ch. 6): God delivers the faithful through, not merely from, mortal dangerChrist’s resurrection through death (Romans 6:9); believers “more than conquerors” through suffering (Romans 8:35-37)Faithfulness under persecution is vindicated by God’s power over death itself, not by avoidance of suffering拯救 (#32) must not collapse into full 救恩; teach as typological anticipation, not identical fulfillment
Daniel’s three prayers-a-day discipline in exile (6:10) and confession-prayer (9:3-19)Christ’s own pattern of regular prayer (Luke 5:16, 6:12); Paul’s intercessory pattern (Romans 1:9-10)Persevering, disciplined prayer under pressure models covenant faithfulness rather than crisis-only religion祷告 (#38) — reuse consistently
The four beast-kingdoms (ch. 7) and the four-part statue (ch. 2), each temporary and revocableThe eternal kingdom given to the Son of Man (7:14) and inaugurated in Christ’s resurrection/ascension, consummated at his return (Revelation 11:15)Every human empire is provisional; only the Messianic kingdom is permanent权柄 (#11), 永不败坏的国 (#14) — consistent rendering across chs. 2, 7
The “watcher, holy one” and angelic “princes” contending over nations (chs. 4, 10)The NT’s cosmic-conflict language (Ephesians 6:12) and angelic ministry to believers (Hebrews 1:14)Real spiritual warfare underlies visible political history, under God’s ultimate sovereign control掌权者/灵界的力量 (#57) — must not import folk territorial-deity categories
Nebuchadnezzar’s pride, madness, and restoration (ch. 4)The general pattern of divine discipline and restoration for the repentant (cf. Hebrews 12:5-11)Even the mightiest ruler is subject to God’s moral government and can be restored upon humble acknowledgment of God骄傲/谦卑 (#35)

SECTION D: Cross-Curriculum Parallels to Romans (and Other Language Package Anchors)

This section specifically addresses rendering-consistency risk between Daniel and Romans, since both curricula share this Mandarin Language Package.

Daniel PassageRomans ParallelShared or Related DoctrineBaseline TM Term(s)Consistency Requirement
Daniel 4:17, 25, 32, 34-37Romans 13:1 (“there is no authority except from God… those that exist have been instituted by God”)God’s Sovereignty over Kings and Kingdoms / Providence神的护理 (baseline “providence”), 权柄 (#11)Both passages ground human political authority in God’s sovereign delegation; Mandarin rendering of “authority” concepts must draw from the same 权柄/掌权 vocabulary field so learners recognize the doctrinal continuity
Daniel 6:10-11; 9:3-19Romans 8:26-27 (the Spirit’s intercession), Romans 12:12 (“be constant in prayer”)Prayer and Perseverance in Exile / Prayer and Intercession代求 (baseline “intercession”), 祷告 (#38)Distinguish 祷告 (general prayer, used for Daniel’s practice) from 代求 (intercession specifically on behalf of others, used of the Spirit’s/Christ’s intercessory work in Romans 8); both must be kept distinct from 求签/问卜 per baseline caution
Daniel 7:14 (事奉 given to the Son of Man)Romans 10:9 (“if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord…”) and Romans 14:11 (quoting Isaiah 45:23, “every knee shall bow”)The Son of Man and Messianic Kingship / Lordship of Christ主 (baseline “lord”), 耶稣是主The universal worship-service (事奉) given to the Son of Man in Daniel 7:14 is the OT anchor for the NT’s confession that “Jesus is Lord” (耶稣是主); teaching materials must draw this connection explicitly, and 事奉 must never be rendered in a way that weakens its parallel force to the Romans 10:9 confession
Daniel 7:18, 22, 27 (the saints receive the kingdom)Romans 8:17 (“fellow heirs with Christ”), Romans 8:37 (“more than conquerors”)Faithfulness under Persecution / Assurance of Salvation圣徒 (baseline “saints”) vs. 圣民 (#41)Explicit note required (already flagged in 08_core_glossary.md) that 圣民 (Daniel/OT) and 圣徒 (Romans/NT) denote the same corporate people of God under two established but distinct Mandarin translation traditions
Daniel 9:24-27 (the Anointed One cut off)Romans 3:24-25 (redemption and propitiation through Christ’s blood), Romans 5:6-8 (Christ died for the ungodly)Messianic Kingship / Grace, Salvation恩典, 救恩 (baseline)受膏者 (#52) is the OT designation of the same person the Romans package designates 基督; teaching notes must state this cross-Testament identity explicitly without conflating the two established Mandarin terms themselves
Daniel 12:2 (resurrection to life or shame)Romans 6:4-5 (raised with Christ to newness of life), Romans 8:11 (the Spirit who raised Christ will raise believers)Apocalyptic Prophecy and the End Times / Resurrection复活 (baseline “resurrection,” Critical, reused as #60)Verbatim term reuse is mandatory; this is the single most direct doctrinal-vocabulary bridge between the two curricula
Daniel 1:8-16; 3; 6 (faithfulness under a hostile state)Romans 12:1-2 (“do not be conformed to this world… but be transformed”), Romans 8:35-39 (nothing can separate from God’s love)Faithfulness under Persecution / Christian Identity in Christ, Assurance of Salvation(no single baseline term; conceptual parallel)Teaching notes, not glossary terms, should draw this parallel; ensure register and tone in Daniel’s persecution narratives matches the warmth-under-pressure register the baseline requires for Romans 8
Daniel 2:20-23, 47; 5:11-14 (“a God who reveals mysteries,” “the spirit of the holy gods”)Romans 11:33-36 (“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!… how unsearchable are his judgments!”)Wisdom and Discernment from God / Providence奥秘 (#26), 神的护理 (baseline)Both passages culminate in doxological wonder at God’s incomprehensible wisdom; 奥秘 should be cross-referenced to Romans 11:33’s doxology in teaching materials as a thematic (not lexical) echo

SECTION E: Rendering-Consistency Rules for Shared Quotations and Cross-Book Formulas

The following rules are binding on Phase 2 segment translation whenever any of the listed source-language phrases recur, whether within Daniel, across Daniel and the Gospels/Revelation, or across Daniel and Romans. These rules extend (never contradict) the baseline translation_memory.json and must be merged into it per Phase 1 Step 9/10.

Rule #Source Phrase / FormulaOccurrencesMandatory Mandarin RenderingRationale
R1”a/the kingdom that shall not be destroyed” (Aram. malku…la tithchabbal)Daniel 2:44; Daniel 7:14永不败坏的国 / “他的国也必不败坏”Same Aramaic formula in two chapters; must be rendered with the same verb 败坏 in both occurrences per 07_semantic_analysis.md
R2”one like a son of man” / “the Son of Man”Daniel 7:13; Matthew 8:20 and 80+ Gospel occurrences; Mark 14:62; Acts 7:56人子Established Chinese Gospel-translation term; must never be interchanged with 神的儿子 (baseline Sonship-of-Christ term)
R3”with the clouds of heaven” / “coming on/with clouds”Daniel 7:13; Matthew 24:30, 26:64; Mark 13:26, 14:62; Acts 1:9, 11; Revelation 1:7天云 / 云 (context-sensitive: retain 天云 for Daniel 7:13 itself per established CUV wording; NT occurrences follow their own established CUV renderings, e.g. “驾着天上的云降临” in Matthew 24:30) — teaching notes must draw the intertextual chain explicitly even where the exact Mandarin wording differs slightly across CUV’s own NT/OT translation choicesThe theophanic force must be preserved in every occurrence even though CUV’s OT and NT translators did not always use character-for-character identical phrasing; the doctrinal continuity, not surface lexical identity, is the requirement here
R4”serve/worship” (Aram. root pelach)Daniel 3:12,14,17,18,28; 6:16,20; 7:14事奉Absolute consistency required; this is the narrative’s deliberate argument for the Son of Man’s deity and must never vary (e.g., never substitute 服侍, 崇拜, or 敬拜 for any of these occurrences)
R5”the abomination that causes desolation”Daniel 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14那行毁坏可憎的Direct NT quotation by name (“spoken of by the prophet Daniel,” Matthew 24:15); Mandarin rendering must be verbatim-identical across all five occurrences
R6”time, times, and half a time” / numbered days (1,290 / 1,335 days)Daniel 7:25; 12:7, 11-12; Revelation 11:2-3; 12:6, 14; 13:5一载、二载、半载 (established CUV time-formula) / literal day-numbersRender literally in every occurrence; do not silently harmonize the numbers or resolve the “which calendar scheme” interpretive question within the translated text
R7”seventy years” (Jeremiah’s prophecy, as read by Daniel)Jeremiah 25:11-12; Jeremiah 29:10; Daniel 9:2七十年Daniel 9:2 is a direct citation of Jeremiah, not a paraphrase; the Mandarin rendering across all three passages should use the same numeral-plus-年 construction
R8”little horn”Daniel 7:8, 11, 20-21, 24-25; 8:9-12, 23-25 (interpreted); 11:36 (thematically continuous figure)小角Must be rendered identically in every chapter to preserve the reader’s ability to track a single recurring figure-type across the book
R9”the Most High rules… gives it to whom he will”Daniel 4:17, 25, 32; 5:18-21 (recalled)至高者…掌权,随自己的意旨行事Rendered identically at every occurrence to preserve the intra-book cross-reference Belshazzar himself is shown failing to heed (5:18-23)
R10”shall awake” / bodily resurrectionDaniel 12:2; John 5:28-29 (conceptual parallel, not verbal quotation); Romans 6:4-5, 8:11复活Baseline-reuse term; absolute consistency with the Romans package required — this is the primary Daniel-Romans doctrinal bridge term
R11”Jesus is Lord” confession vis-à-vis Daniel 7:14’s universal pelachRomans 10:9 (baseline-fixed: 耶稣是主) alongside Daniel 7:14’s 事奉耶稣是主 (Romans, unchanged) / 事奉 (Daniel, unchanged)These are two distinct established renderings for two related but textually distinct concepts (a confession formula vs. a worship-verb); do NOT attempt to harmonize their wording — instead, use teaching notes to draw the doctrinal connection while preserving each curriculum’s own established phrase intact
