Executive Summary
01 — Executive Summary: Nahum (Mandarin Language Package Extension)
Why it matters
Nahum extends the Mandarin Bible curriculum from Romans into Hebrew prophetic literature for the first time, introducing the covenant name 耶和华 (YHWH) as a Critical-risk term that did not exist in the baseline Romans package. The core passage (Nahum 1:1–8) states, in a single seven-verse unit, that the same God who is “slow to anger” will “by no means acquit the guilty” — a theological balance uniquely vulnerable to distortion in a Mandarin-speaking context shaped by karmic retribution (报应), Mandate-of-Heaven fatalism (天命/天意), and folk-fortune vocabulary (平安符). Getting this passage right sets the doctrinal foundation for every downstream Nahum lesson.
Key findings
- Full-book coverage confirmed: all 3 chapters of Nahum reviewed; no chapter is doctrinally inert. 13 doctrines identified and risk-tiered in
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, matching11_doctrine_analysis.mdexactly. - New Critical-risk terminology: 耶和华 (YHWH) and 万军之耶和华 (LORD of hosts) must never be collapsed into the baseline’s 主 (reserved for NT kyrios/Lordship) — this is the single highest-severity, most frequent risk in the entire book (13 occurrences of the tetragrammaton).
- Term-level risk summary (Nahum-specific, per
08_core_glossary.md): 2 Critical, 10 High, 13 Medium new terms, plus 10 inherited baseline terms requiring Nahum-specific contextual notes. - Doctrine-level risk summary (per
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json): 1 Critical, 8 High, 4 Medium, 0 Low — 9 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review, 4 require native speaker review, 0 are automated-only. - Combined Critical + High items requiring theologian oversight: 21 (2 Critical + 10 High terms, cross-referenced against 1 Critical + 8 High doctrines) — the highest concentration of theologian-review load of any curriculum book processed to date under this Language Package.
- The prophet’s own name (那鸿, “comfort”) is the book’s central irony and is textually invisible without an explanatory gloss at every reference — a pedagogical, not merely lexical, requirement.
- Nahum 1:15’s “bringer of good news” (报好信的) creates a direct typological bridge to Isaiah 52:7 / Romans 10:15, requiring careful boundary-setting against the baseline’s 福音 term to avoid anachronistic collapse of OT type into NT technical vocabulary.
Risks
- Fatalism collision (Critical/High): 耶和华’s sovereignty over Nineveh/Assyria risks reading as impersonal 天命 (Mandate of Heaven) or 天意 (Heaven’s inscrutable intention) rather than a personal covenant God’s historically specific verdict.
- Karmic-retribution collision (High): God’s wrath/vengeance vocabulary (忿怒, 施报) risks collapsing into 报应 (impersonal karma) or 报仇 (personal vendetta, reinforced by wuxia/revenge-drama culture).
- Literalistic misreading (High): Nahum 3:4’s national metaphors “harlotries” (淫行) and “witchcrafts” (邪术) risk being read as individual sexual sin or folk-occult practice rather than the intended prophetic genre of imperial seduction/deception.
- Premature theological equivalence (High): 报好信的 (Nahum 1:15) risks being rendered with, or silently equated to, 福音 — flattening a historical type into the full NT gospel term.
- Attribute imbalance (High): 不轻易发怒 (“slow to anger”) and 万不以恶为无罪 (“will not acquit the guilty”) must be taught as one unified character; translated or taught separately, either God’s patience reads as indifference or his justice reads as harshness.
- Cultural reversal risk (Medium): Lion imagery (狮子) defaults to Chinese guardian-lion (石狮) protective associations, the opposite of Nahum’s predatory intent.
Opportunities
- Nahum’s judgment/comfort pairing offers a natural teaching bridge into Romans’ grace/justice themes already established in the baseline package, reinforcing curriculum-wide theological coherence rather than introducing an isolated book.
- The 耶和华/主 distinction, once correctly established for Nahum, strengthens the whole curriculum’s OT/NT terminological discipline for all future Hebrew-Bible curricula added to this Language Package.
- Nahum’s concrete historical specificity (named empires, named cities, a datable fall in 612 BC) offers strong pedagogical grounding against the very fatalistic/karmic misreadings this culture’s vocabulary invites — the specificity itself is an asset, not merely a risk to be managed.
Recommended actions
- Merge
assets/translation_memory.json(this Nahum extension) into the active Phase 2 enforcement database alongside the baseline Romanstranslation_memory.jsonbefore any segment processing begins. - Route all 9 theologian-review doctrines and both Critical terms (耶和华, 万军之耶和华) through mandatory human theologian review per
assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json; do not permit automated-only or native-speaker-only clearance for these. - Implement the Nahum-specific forbidden-substitution list and mandatory footnote triggers (那鸿 name-gloss, 忌邪, 淫行/邪术, 报好信的, 挪亚们, 狮子) exactly as specified in
analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.mdbefore Phase 2 begins. - Brief all assigned theologian reviewers specifically on the 耶和华/主 cross-Testament boundary and the 报好信的/福音 typological boundary, since both are novel risk classes not present in the Romans-only baseline.
