Doctrine Analysis

11 — Doctrine Analysis: 1 Samuel (Full Book) for Mandarin Translation

This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 (doctrine matrix) and Step 5 (full-book chapter coverage) for the 1 Samuel curriculum. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — same 18 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. The core passage (1 Samuel 16:1-13) anchors the curriculum theologically but does not limit analytical scope: every chapter, 1 through 31, is accounted for below, including chapters that contribute no new terminology.

Part C — Notes for Phase 2 Routing

  1. All 14 doctrines routed to “Human theologian” in Part A require mandatory theologian sign-off for every occurrence of their associated key terms across all 31 chapters, not merely at the anchor passage.
  2. Chapters 27 and 29, while contributing no new doctrine or term, must still be translated using the already-established glossary (Table 2 of 08_core_glossary.md) and are not exempt from translation-memory enforcement — “no new load” means no new analysis is required, not that review is skipped.
  3. Chapter 16 (the core passage) carries the highest term-density in the book (eight distinct tracked terms in thirteen verses) and should be scheduled first in Phase 2 Step 16 batch processing so that its terminology choices are locked in translation memory before downstream chapters (17, 24, 26) that depend on consistent rendering of 受膏者, 拣选, and 耶和华的灵.
  4. This document supersedes no baseline Romans doctrine; where 1 Samuel doctrines touch baseline-tracked concepts (Holy Spirit, Election, Covenant, Salvation), the baseline’s Critical-tier forbidden-substitution rules remain in force without exception.

See 08_core_glossary.md for term-level detail and assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json for the machine-enforced registry this document mirrors.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Obedience versus Sacrifice

Mandarin name: 听命胜于献祭
Key terms: obey, hearken, sacrifice, to obey is better than sacrifice, foolishly
Review routing: Human theologian

15:22’s proverb (听命胜于献祭) is the doctrine’s memorable anchor and must be rendered as a direct, quotable statement, never paraphrased into abstraction. 听从/听命 must be kept distinct both from 孝顺 (Confucian filial obedience owed as a family debt) and from the baseline’s NT technical phrase 因信而生的顺服 (obedience flowing from faith already given under the New Covenant) — this is OT covenant-obedience to God’s spoken command, relationally grounded but lexically and administratively distinct from Paul’s phrase.

The Danger of Rejecting God as King

Mandarin name: 拒绝神为王的危险
Key terms: rejected, like all the nations, king, medium
Review routing: Human theologian

厌弃 must be rendered with full judicial-covenantal force at every occurrence (8:7 Israel rejects God; 15:23,26 God rejects Saul) — the deliberate authorial echo linking these two rejections is the doctrine’s argumentative backbone and must not be softened into mere preference language. Saul’s narrative arc culminates in the condemned necromancy of ch.28 (交鬼的女人), which directly overlaps live Chinese folk practice (灵媒, 扶乩); this must be taught as the terminal stage of covenant unfaithfulness, never as a viable or God-sanctioned spiritual technique.

The Anointed King as a Type of the Messiah

Mandarin name: 受膏的王作为基督的预表
Key terms: anoint, the LORD’s anointed, horn of oil, type
Review routing: Human theologian

受膏者 (the human-king title, etymologically the root of 基督 via Hebrew מָשַׁח → LXX χρίω → χριστός) must never be presented as interchangeable with 基督, which is reserved exclusively for Jesus. Every occurrence requires explicit 预表 (typology) framing distinguishing a forward-pointing type from reincarnation/avatar-style repetition (轮回, 化身, 转世 — all baseline-forbidden). David’s repeated refusal to harm Saul as 受膏者 (chs.24,26) must be taught as reverence for a divinely instituted office, not evidence that the office itself possesses saving significance.

Divine Sovereignty over Good and Evil Spirits

Mandarin name: 神对善灵与恶灵的主权
Key terms: Spirit of the LORD, evil spirit from the LORD, rushed upon
Review routing: Human theologian

耶和华的灵 and 恶魔/扰乱的灵 must both always carry an explicit divine qualifier — never the bare noun 灵, which in Chinese folk usage names ancestral spirits (祖灵), nature spirits, or ghosts. The evil/tormenting spirit sent upon Saul must be taught as occurring under God’s sovereign permission as judicial discipline, not as evidence of a rival evil deity (avoiding dualism) and not assimilated to the autonomous, capricious folk-ghost trope of 作祟 (‘a ghost’s mischief-making’).

The Prohibition of Necromancy and Divination

Mandarin name: 禁止交鬼与占卜
Key terms: medium, inquire of the LORD, casting lots
Review routing: Human theologian

交鬼的女人 sits directly atop widespread, currently practiced Chinese folk-religious behavior — consulting spirit-mediums (灵媒), planchette/spirit-writing (扶乩), or ancestor-consultation rituals. This chapter must be translated and taught as an explicit, condemned covenant violation with Saul’s death as its immediate narrative consequence (ch.31), never rendered or paraphrased in a way that suggests necromancy reliably contacts the dead as a viable or neutral spiritual technique. Mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence.

High Risk Doctrines

The Transition from Judges to Monarchy

Mandarin name: 从士师时代过渡到君王制
Key terms: judge, king, rejected, like all the nations
Review routing: Human theologian

士师 (the Spirit-raised, temporary judge-office) must not be flattened into a modern secular 法官, nor should 王 be allowed to drift toward the historic Chinese imperial title 天子 (‘Son of Heaven’), whose legitimacy under the Mandate of Heaven (天命) is a revocable cosmic entitlement rather than a subordinate office under a personal God’s continuing kingship. The narrative shift itself must be taught as a theological demotion within Israel’s self-understanding, not a natural political maturation.

God’s Sovereign Choice of David

Mandarin name: 神主权拣选大卫
Key terms: chosen, provided for himself, heart, appearance, youngest
Review routing: Human theologian

拣选 must retain its direct lexical and doctrinal continuity with the baseline’s Critical-risk election doctrine (NEVER 天命/命运/缘分). The 心 vs 外貌 contrast (16:7) carries an inverted risk relative to the baseline’s usual sanctification caution: it must not be read as ‘God rewards the best Confucian-cultivated heart’ but as a statement of God’s exclusive omniscience grounding an unearned, sovereign choice — reinforced narratively by David’s reversal of Chinese-resonant eldest-son primacy expectations (嫡长子继承制).

Faith versus Fear (David and Goliath)

Mandarin name: 信心胜过惧怕
Key terms: afraid, dismayed, trust, rely on, the living God, defy
Review routing: Human theologian

惧怕 (negative, faith-undermining terror) must be kept distinct from the positive theological term 敬畏 (‘fear of the LORD,’ reverence) so learners do not conflate the two opposite postures toward God. 活神/永生的神 must retain vivid, personal force as the living contrast to lifeless idols (Dagon, ch.5) rather than flattening into ‘a god who merely exists’; 倚靠 (narrative trust-in-action) and baseline 信心 (doctrinal-expository faith) describe the same underlying reality in different genres and must be taught as continuous, not competing, categories.

Samuel’s Role as Prophet and Judge

Mandarin name: 撒母耳作先知与士师的职分
Key terms: judge, seer, prophet, word of the LORD, called
Review routing: Human theologian

The narrative verb 呼唤 (God calling Samuel by name, ch.3) must not be conflated with the baseline’s doctrinal-technical nouns 呼召/蒙召的 (Pauline κλῆσις/κλητός) — these are lexically distinct registers of the same underlying concept of a personal divine summons, and forcing lexical identity would misrepresent both the OT narrative style and the NT technical vocabulary. 先见/先知 terminological evolution (9:9) is an internal shift within Israel’s legitimate prophetic tradition and must not be assimilated to 算命先生 (fortune-teller).

Inspiration and Prophetic Revelation

Mandarin name: 圣言的默示与预言的启示
Key terms: word of the LORD, prophesy, man of God
Review routing: Human theologian

耶和华的话 must be distinguished from the Confucian/Daoist classical canon (经, jīng) read as sage-wisdom literature — this is personal, verbal revelation from a personal God through a designated human spokesperson. The ecstatic prophetic-band phenomena of chs.10 and 19 must be distinguished from folk trance/spirit-possession practices (乩童, 扶乩), being Spirit-of-the-LORD-initiated rather than human-induced or spirit-consulted.

God’s Presence versus Idolatry

Mandarin name: 神的同在胜过偶像
Key terms: Ark of the Covenant, Dagon, glory, Ichabod
Review routing: Human theologian

约柜 must never be taught as a talisman guaranteeing outcomes through mere possession — Israel’s own misuse of it in ch.4 (leading to its capture and Israel’s defeat) is the narrative’s cautionary example against exactly the transactional-object logic present in Chinese folk-amulet and sacred-object practice (符, 神像). 荣耀’s departure (以迦博, ‘no glory’) must be kept as covenantal judgment, not reduced to 面子 (social face) or 光宗耀祖 (ancestral honor).

Legitimate versus Illegitimate Guidance-Seeking

Mandarin name: 合法求问神与非法占卜的分别
Key terms: inquire of the LORD, ephod, casting lots, medium
Review routing: Human theologian

求问耶和华, 以弗得, and sanctioned 抽签 must together be taught as one coherent category of God-given, sanctioned guidance-seeking, sharply contrasted with ch.28’s medium consultation. Any blurring of this contrast risks legitimizing folk-divination practices (占卜, 算卦, 灵媒咨询) by false association with Scripture’s own approved means of seeking God’s will.

Vow and Covenant Worship (Hannah’s Vow)

Mandarin name: 哈拿的许愿与立约敬拜
Key terms: vow, priest
Review routing: Human theologian

许愿/愿 surface-level closely resembles the widespread Chinese folk-temple practice of 许愿还愿 — a transactional bargain promising an offering to a deity in exchange for a granted request. Hannah’s vow must be taught as flowing from covenant relationship with a personal God who has already shown covenant faithfulness, and its fulfillment as grateful worship, not payment discharging a bargain with an impersonal or plural folk deity; cross-reference the baseline’s grace-versus-merit distinction.

Divine Judgment and the Ban (Cherem)

Mandarin name: 神的审判与灭尽的命令
Key terms: devoted to destruction, utterly destroy, Amalek
Review routing: Human theologian

灭尽净尽/毁灭净尽 must be framed as a specific, time-bound covenantal war-ban command under direct divine authorization within Israel’s unique redemptive-historical situation, never as a general ethical model for warfare or interpersonal conduct that could be extended by analogy. Given its ethical sensitivity and centrality to Saul’s rejection, every occurrence requires human theologian review rather than native-speaker-only sign-off.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Covenant Loyalty and Friendship (David and Jonathan)

Mandarin name: 大卫与约拿单的立约友谊
Key terms: made a covenant, swear an oath
Review routing: Native speaker review

立约, built on baseline 约, must be taught as a human relational-loyalty covenant distinct in kind from God-initiated redemptive covenants (Davidic, Abrahamic), while still modeling the relational (not commercial) covenant character the baseline requires generally; avoid conflating this bond with the ritualized sworn-brotherhood pact (结拜, e.g. the Peach Garden oath) the baseline already flags under ‘fellowship.‘

Anticipation of the Davidic Dynastic Covenant

Mandarin name: 对大卫王朝之约的预先应许
Key terms: a sure house, the LORD’s anointed
Review routing: Native speaker review

坚立的家/王朝 must be flagged as forward-pointing narrative anticipation only; the formal Davidic covenant itself (2 Samuel 7) lies outside this book’s scope, and Abigail’s words must not be overstated as themselves constituting the covenant. This supports, but must not be confused with, the doctrine of the anointed king as a type of the Messiah.

Ritual Holiness and Consecration

Mandarin name: 礼仪上的圣洁与自洁
Key terms: consecrate yourselves, holy bread
Review routing: Native speaker review

自洁 and 圣饼 are ritual-cultic instances of the holiness word-family and must be distinguished from the moral-relational doctrine of ongoing sanctification (成圣); also distinguish 自洁 from Daoist/Buddhist ritual self-purification practiced as a technique for acquiring merit or spiritual power, since this is preparatory obedience to a specific divine instruction, not a merit-generating practice.

Low Risk Doctrines

Solemn Oath-Swearing

Mandarin name: 郑重的起誓
Key terms: swear an oath
Review routing: Automated review

起誓 carries low doctrinal risk as ordinary solemn-promise vocabulary; only minor risk of readers treating it as casual promise-making rather than a God-invoked, binding pledge.
