Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — Gospel of John (English → Mandarin)

Why it matters

The Gospel of John carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier Christological claims of any curriculum this Language Package has processed to date. Where Romans anchors on justification and grace, John anchors on the person of Christ — his deity, pre-existence, and unity with the Father — using vocabulary (道, 独生子, 我是, 我与父原为一) that sits directly inside the most theologically loaded semantic territory in Mandarin: Daoist metaphysics, Confucian relational ethics, folk-Buddhist judgment cosmology, and the modern one-child-policy lexicon. Getting this curriculum’s core passage (John 3:1–21 — the New Birth) right, and getting the surrounding 20 chapters right without silent doctrinal drift, is the highest-stakes translation task in the program so far.

Key findings

  • 33 doctrines cataloged across John 1–21, anchored in but not limited to John 3:1–21; 13 Critical + 13 High = 26 doctrines (79%) require mandatory human theologian review, versus 4 Medium (native speaker review) and 3 Low (automated review only).
  • 96 glossary terms now enforced in assets/translation_memory.json: 29 inherited verbatim from the Romans baseline (12 Critical / 9 High / 4 Medium / 4 Low) plus 67 new John-specific terms (12 Critical / 35 High / 17 Medium / 3 Low). Combined: 24 Critical + 44 High = 68 terms (71%) require theologian-level enforcement.
  • The core passage alone (John 3:1–21) contains 7 of this curriculum’s 10 highest-ranked translation ambiguities, including the single highest-risk term in the entire package: 重生 (born again), which collides simultaneously with secular “life turnaround” usage and Buddhist rebirth vocabulary.
  • Three genuine linguistic gaps exist with no Mandarin fix possible (not just a collision risk, but a structural loss): the πνεῦμα wind/Spirit pun (3:8), the ἀγαπάω/φιλέω alternation (21:15-17), and ἄνωθεν’s lost “from above” sense inside 重生 (3:3,7) — all three require mandatory teaching notes rather than lexical solutions.
  • 道 (Logos, John 1:1) reuses the same character already flagged Critical in the Romans baseline’s 道成肉身, compounding an existing collision risk rather than introducing a new one — this is a point of continuity, not surprise.

Risks

  • Highest risk: 我与父原为一 (“I and the Father are one,” 10:30) is one idiomatic softening away from collapsing an ontological unity claim into Confucian relational-harmony (和) language — a “natural-sounding” mistranslation that would be doctrinally fatal and easy for a fluent but untrained translator to produce unnoticed.
  • Second highest risk: 独生子 (only begotten) and 重生 (born again) both carry live, high-frequency competing meanings in ordinary contemporary Mandarin (the one-child-policy demographic term; the secular “turned my life around” cliché) that a translator could reproduce faithfully at the sentence level while completely losing the doctrine.
  • Systemic risk: John’s dual-valence use of κόσμος (world) — object of God’s love in 3:16, hostile order in 15:18-19 and within the same chapter at 17:14 vs. 17:18 — means a single default gloss anywhere in the pipeline will misrender roughly half of its occurrences.
  • Compounding risk: chapters 14–20 cluster an unusually dense run of Critical terms (保惠师, 我与父原为一, 成圣, 合而为一, 钉十字架, 成了, 复活, 我的主我的神) in close proximity, meaning reviewer capacity must be weighted toward the Farewell Discourse and Passion/Resurrection narrative, not distributed evenly across the book.

Opportunities

  • Mandarin’s century of CUV usage means no new vocabulary needs to be invented for John; the task is almost entirely active theological “fencing” of existing, settled terms (道, 永生, 重生, 审判, 保惠师) rather than translation from scratch — a lower-novelty, higher-precision task than a from-zero glossary build.
  • 保惠师 (Paraclete) is a rare case of a low-collision coined term: because it has no competing folk-religious meaning, teaching it correctly the first time is a one-time investment rather than an ongoing defensive effort against a live competing sense.
  • The 道/道路 resonance between λόγος (1:1) and ὁδός (14:6) — two distinct Greek words sharing one Mandarin character — can be turned into a deliberate teaching bridge (“Christ is both the eternal Word and the Way to the Father”) once properly fenced against the Daoist reading, rather than merely managed as a risk.
  • John’s own text does much of the fencing work for us: 5:18’s “与神平等” is the text’s own explicit gloss on Jesus’s Sonship claim, and John 20’s physical resurrection details are themselves an implicit anti-docetic argument — teaching materials can cite the text’s self-interpretation rather than relying solely on external translator notes.
  1. Route all 26 Critical/High doctrines and all 68 Critical/High glossary terms through mandatory human theologian review before Phase 2 sign-off, per assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and assets/translation_memory.json.
  2. Lock the rendering of nine consistency-critical verses (John 1:1, 1:14, 3:3-8, 3:16, 8:58, 10:30, 14:6, 20:28, 20:30-31) across all curriculum documents before any parallel Phase 2 batch processing begins.
  3. Weight reviewer capacity toward chapters 14–20 given their disproportionate Critical-term density, rather than allocating review effort evenly across all 21 chapters.
  4. Require the mandatory translator/teaching notes identified for the three structural (non-fixable) linguistic gaps — 3:8’s wind/Spirit pun, 21:15-17’s agapē/phileō alternation, and 3:3/3:7’s lost ἄνωθεν sense — as a non-negotiable Phase 2 deliverable, not an optional footnote.
  5. Carry forward the Romans baseline’s forbidden-substitution list unchanged and add the John-specific forbidden list (道≠Daoist Way, 独生子≠独生子女, 重生≠转世, 永生≠长生不老, 审判≠报应/阎王, 保惠师≠律师/法师, 我与父原为一≠和) into every Phase 2 system prompt without exception.
