Semantic Analysis

07 — Semantic Analysis: 2 Thessalonians (Full Book) — Mandarin Destination Language

Methodology

This analysis proceeds in two parts, per PRD Phase 1 Step 1:

  1. Core passage verse-by-verse (2 Thessalonians 2:1-12) — every load-bearing term is analyzed with: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, attested English translation variants, contextual theological meaning within Romans-adjacent Pauline theology and this letter specifically, and the Mandarin rendering with risk tier.
  2. Chapter-by-chapter study of the whole book (chs. 1–3) — every chapter is covered for load-bearing theological vocabulary using the same fields. Where a chapter section reuses terms already analyzed above, this is stated explicitly rather than omitted.

Baseline compliance. Every term already recorded in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json is reused exactly as pinned there (e.g. 神, 主, 耶稣, 基督, 恩典, 信心, 教会, 荣耀, 圣洁, 圣徒, 成圣, 呼召/蒙召的, 拣选, 义, 救恩, 劝勉, 神的大能, 福音, 圣灵, 平安). This document does not re-litigate those entries; it only flags places where 2 Thessalonians’ usage extends or stress-tests the baseline sense.

Risk tiers follow the baseline’s four-tier framework (Critical / High / Medium / Low), defined identically to doctrine_risk_registry.json.

PART 1 — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12

2:1 — Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡμῶν ἐπισυναγωγῆς ἐπ’ αὐτόν

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
παρουσία (parousia)“presence, arrival”official/royal arrival of a dignitary; in NT, Christ’s visible, personal return”coming,” “advent,” “arrival”The Second Coming of Christ — the central eschatological hinge of the whole chapter, contrasted deliberately with the counterfeit “coming” of the lawless one in v.9降临 (jiànglín) — established CUV renderingCritical. See cross-cutting note below: the SAME Mandarin word must be used for the true parousia (v.1, v.8) and the counterfeit parousia (v.9) to preserve Paul’s intentional parody. Do not follow CUV precedent of varying the rendering.
ἐπισυναγωγή (episynagōgē)“a gathering together upon/toward”eschatological assembling of the elect to Christ at his coming (cf. Matt 24:31; 2 Thess itself)“our being gathered together to him,” “our assembling to meet him”Distinct from ordinary church assembly (ἐκκλησία); this is the end-time gathering of all believers to Christ at his parousia聚集 (jùjí) — new termMedium. Must be distinguished in teaching from routine 教会 gathering; risk is flattening a unique eschatological event into a generic “meeting.”
ἀδελφοί (adelphoi)“brothers”Paul’s standard address to the church, inclusive of all believers”brothers,” “brothers and sisters”Family-of-faith address, not biological or clan kinship弟兄 (dìxiōng)Low. Standard, no significant collision.

2:2 — εἰς τὸ μὴ ταχέως σαλευθῆναι ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ τοῦ νοὸς μηδὲ θροεῖσθαι μήτε διὰ πνεύματος μήτε διὰ λόγου μήτε δι’ ἐπιστολῆς ὡς δι’ ἡμῶν, ὡς ὅτι ἐνέστηκεν ἡ ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου (hēmera tou kyriou)“day of the Lord”OT prophetic day of divine visitation/judgment, applied to Christ’s return”the day of the Lord,” some mss “the day of Christ”The core doctrinal anchor of this curriculum: the decisive day of Christ’s judging/saving intervention in history主的日子 (zhǔ de rìzi) — established CUV phraseCritical. Must not be assimilated to generic Chinese “doomsday” (末日, mòrì, a secular/disaster-film term) or to Buddhist “age of the decline of the Dharma” (末法时代). This is a personal Lord’s specific, future intervention, not an impersonal cosmic decline.
σαλεύω (saleuō)“to shake, cause to waver”physical shaking; figuratively, being destabilized in conviction”be shaken,” “be quickly unsettled”Doctrinal/emotional destabilization by false end-times claims动心 (dòngxīn) — new termLow.
θροέω (throeō)“to be troubled/alarmed”agitation, alarm”be alarmed,” “be troubled”Emotional response to false teaching about the Day of the Lord惊慌 (jīnghuāng) — new termLow.
πνεῦμα / λόγος / ἐπιστολή (pneuma / logos / epistolē)“spirit / word / letter”claimed channels of revelation: a prophetic utterance, a spoken report, a forged letter”spirit,” “word,” “letter”False claims to prophetic or apostolic authority asserting the Day has already come灵、言语、书信Medium. 灵 here means a claimed prophetic utterance/spirit-message, not 圣灵; context must prevent conflation with the Holy Spirit doctrine (圣灵 is always reserved for the third Person of the Trinity per baseline).

2:3 — μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον· ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
ἐξαπατάω (exapataō)“to deceive thoroughly”intensified deception (double compound)“deceive,” “delude”Warning against false teaching about end-times timing迷惑 (míhuò) — new termMedium. Prefer 迷惑 over 诱惑 (yòuhuò), which leans toward moral temptation rather than doctrinal deception; this verse is about being misled on facts/teaching, not tempted to sin.
ἀποστασία (apostasia)“a standing away from, defection”religious/political revolt; falling away from a previously held position”rebellion,” “apostasy,” “the falling away”A definite, end-time apostasy/rebellion preceding the man of lawlessness’s revealing离道反教的事 (established CUV Shen-edition phrase); acceptable modern-register alternative 背道的事 (bèidào de shì)Critical. Must be taught as a specific eschatological falling-away from the true faith, not a vague political “rebellion” (avoid resonance with dynastic-rebellion narratives) nor mere lapsed religious observance.
ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας (anthrōpos tēs anomias)“man of the lawlessness”a specific, singular end-time human figure embodying and enacting lawlessness”man of lawlessness,” “man of sin” (some mss ἁμαρτίας), “lawless one”The chief antagonist of this letter’s core doctrine; a real future individual, empowered by Satan (v.9), destroyed by Christ (v.8)那不法的人 (nà bùfǎ de rén)Critical. See glossary entry on ἀνομία. Recommended over CUV’s historic “大罪人” (great sinner) because it preserves the lexical link to μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας (v.7) and ἀνομία’s other NT occurrences, keeping the “lawlessness” theme visibly unified across the passage.
υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (huios tēs apōleias)“son of destruction/perdition”Semitic idiom: one whose character/destiny is destruction (cf. “son of peace,” “sons of disobedience”)“son of perdition,” “son of destruction,” “man doomed to destruction”Identifies the man of lawlessness’s certain, final destiny — everlasting ruin, not merely present wickedness灭亡之子 (mièwáng zhī zǐ) — established CUV phraseCritical. Must not be softened into a mere character description (“a very wicked man”); it is a declaration of final destiny under God’s judgment.

2:4 — ὁ ἀντικείμενος καὶ ὑπεραιρόμενος ἐπὶ πάντα λεγόμενον θεὸν ἢ σέβασμα, ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν ναὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καθίσαι, ἀποδεικνύντα ἑαυτὸν ὅτι ἔστιν θεός

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
ἀντικείμενος (antikeimenos)“the one lying/standing against”active opposition, adversarial posture”opposes,” “the adversary,” “who opposes”Direct hostility to God and everything rightly worshiped抵挡 (dǐdǎng) — new termMedium.
ὑπεραίρομαι (hyperairomai)“to lift oneself up over/above”self-exaltation, hubris, usurpation”exalts himself,” “raises himself above”Self-deifying usurpation, echoing Isaiah 14 and Daniel 11 OT patterns of a ruler claiming divine prerogative高抬自己 (gāotái zìjǐ) — new termHigh. Because baseline doctrine already trains readers to distinguish Christ’s true, eternal deity from the Chinese emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven-derived quasi-divine status (see deity_of_christ, sonship_of_christ), this figure is the deliberate photo-negative: a false self-deifier usurping worship. Teaching must state this is a future, singular eschatological figure — not merely “another example of emperor-worship” and not to be historically pinned to any past ruler.
ναός (naos)“temple, inner sanctuary”the sanctuary proper (distinct from ἱερόν, the whole temple precinct)“temple,” “sanctuary”Debated referent (physical rebuilt Jerusalem temple vs. the church as God’s temple vs. symbolic); the term itself is stable殿 (diàn) — established Chinese Bible usageMedium. Primarily an exegetical, not lexical, ambiguity; flag for theologian review on referent, not translation.
ἀποδεικνύμι (apodeiknymi)“to demonstrate, exhibit, display as proof”public proof/exhibition, stronger than a mere verbal claim”displaying himself as God,” “proclaiming himself to be God”An active self-exhibition/spectacle of false deity, not merely a private claim自称是神 (zìchēng shì Shén) — CUV’s established renderingMedium. Note: 自称 (“self-proclaim”) slightly under-translates ἀποδείκνυμι’s “put on public display/exhibit as proof” nuance; teaching material may supplement with “公开显示自己是神” to retain the spectacle dimension.

2:5 — Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν;

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
μνημονεύω (mnēmoneuō)“to remember, call to mind”recollection of prior apostolic teaching”remember,” “recall”Appeal to Paul’s own prior oral teaching — an early instance of the letter’s “traditions” theme (cf. 2:15, 3:6)记得 (jìdé)Low. Connects thematically to paradosis (tradition) doctrine; teaching should note this verse as the first appeal to previously-delivered apostolic instruction.

2:6 — καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε, εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ καιρῷ

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
τὸ κατέχον (to katechon, neuter participle)“the restraining thing”an impersonal restraining force/factor”what is restraining,” “that which restrains”Something currently holding back the full manifestation of lawlessness, on a divinely appointed timetable (ἐν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ καιρῷ)那拦阻的 (nà lánzǔ de)High. Mandarin nominalization with 的 does not mark grammatical gender, so the neuter-to-masculine shift between v.6 (τὸ κατέχον) and v.7 (ὁ κατέχων) — significant to many interpreters for identifying the restrainer as a personal agent — cannot be reproduced grammatically. Requires a translator/theologian note rather than a lexical fix.
καιρός (kairos)“appointed time, season”a divinely fixed moment, distinct from χρόνος (clock time)“his own time,” “its appointed time”God’s sovereign timetable governs even the lawless one’s emergence — an implicit providence claim时候 (shíhou)Low-Medium. Connects to providence doctrine already established in the baseline (神的护理); the restrainer/timetable material reinforces that even lawlessness operates under God’s sovereign schedule, not outside it.

2:7 — τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας· μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
μυστήριον (mystērion)“mystery, hidden thing now disclosed”in Paul, God’s previously hidden plan progressively revealed — never an esoteric secret restricted to initiates”mystery,” “secret power”Lawlessness is already secretly, presently active, even before the man of lawlessness’s public unveiling奥秘 (àomì) recommended for consistency with broader NT usage; CUV’s 2 Thess-specific rendering is 隐意 (yǐnyì)Medium-High. 奥秘 also appears in Daoist esoteric/inner-alchemy contexts (道教奥秘) implying restricted, initiate-only knowledge; must be taught as God’s plan disclosed progressively in redemptive history, not an ongoing secret accessible only through special practice. Flag the CUV variant 隐意 for consistency review — recommend standardizing on 奥秘 across the curriculum.
ἀνομία (anomia)“lawlessness, without-law-ness”a-privative + νόμος; active, willful rejection of God’s law, not mere ignorance”lawlessness,” “wickedness,” “iniquity”The defining moral-spiritual character of the end-time rebellion and its embodiment不法 (bùfǎ)Critical. See glossary entry; must not be rendered with a term implying only social-rule infraction (规矩, guījǔ) or Confucian ritual-propriety failure (失礼); this is rebellion against God’s own law.
ἐνεργέω (energeō)“to work, be operative, be effectual”active, ongoing operation/production of effect”is at work,” “is already operating”Present, active reality of lawlessness’s hidden operation, contrasted with the same verb’s use of God’s power elsewhere in Paul运行 / 已经发动Medium. See cross-cutting note on ἐνέργεια below (v.9) regarding CUV’s dated 运动 rendering.
ὁ κατέχων (ho katechōn, masculine participle)“the one restraining”now personified — “he who restrains""he who now restrains,” “the one who holds it back”The personal agent behind the restraint (candidates debated: Holy Spirit, an angel, the Roman state, the church’s proclamation)那拦阻的 (nà lánzǔ de) — same phrase as v.6, since Mandarin flattens the gender shiftHigh. Same caution as v.6; theologian review required to supply the interpretive note the grammar alone cannot carry in Mandarin.

2:8 — καὶ τότε ἀποκαλυφθήσεται ὁ ἄνομος, ὃν ὁ κύριος [Ἰησοῦς] ἀνελεῖ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ καὶ καταργήσει τῇ ἐπιφανείᾳ τῆς παρουσίας αὐτοῦ

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
ἀποκαλύπτω (apokalyptō)“to uncover, reveal”disclosure of what was previously hidden”revealed,” “will be revealed”The man of lawlessness’s public unveiling at the appointed time — same verb used for the restrainer’s removal (v.6) and for Christ’s own revelation (1:7, ἀποκάλυψις)显露 (xiǎnlù)High. Belongs to the “revealing” word-cluster (显露/显现) that must stay visually consistent across the Day-of-the-Lord vocabulary.
ἄνομος (anomos)“lawless (one)“shorthand adjective-as-noun for the man of lawlessness (v.3)“the lawless one”Same referent as ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, used as a compact title那不法的人 (consistent with v.3)Critical (inherits risk from v.3 entry; consistency required).
ἀναιρέω (anaireō, here ἀνελεῖ)“to take up/away, kill, destroy”to slay, put to death, do away with”will kill,” “will slay,” “will destroy” (some mss καταναλώσει, “consume”)Christ’s effortless, verbal destruction of the lawless one — a direct allusion to Isaiah 11:4 (“the breath of his lips”)灭绝 / 除灭Medium. Note textual variant (ἀνελεῖ “slay” vs. καταναλώσει “consume/burn up”) — both convey decisive, total destruction; no major doctrinal risk either way.
πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος (pneuma tou stomatos)“breath/spirit of his mouth”mere spoken word as an instrument of overwhelming power (cf. Isa 11:4; Rev 19:15, sword from the mouth)“breath of his mouth”Christ requires no army or struggle — a word suffices; underscores the total asymmetry of power between Christ and the lawless one口中的气Low.
καταργέω (katargeō)“to render inoperative, nullify, abolish”Paul’s frequent verb for rendering something powerless/void (cf. Rom 3:31 for νόμος)“destroy,” “bring to nothing,” “abolish,” “annihilate”The lawless one’s power/claim is not merely defeated but rendered entirely null废弃 (fèiqì)Medium.
ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας (epiphaneia tēs parousias)“the shining-forth/manifestation of his coming”ἐπιφάνεια = a visible, glorious appearing (used of both divine and imperial arrivals in Hellenistic usage); compounded with παρουσία for emphasis”the appearing of his coming,” “the brightness of his coming”Doubled emphasis on the sheer visible, glorious, undeniable nature of Christ’s return, in contrast to the lawless one’s counterfeit, deceptive “coming” (v.9)降临的荣光 (established CUV paraphrase, combining ἐπιφάνεια with glory-language)High. Ensure the note that this compound intensifies (not merely repeats) παρουσία — it is Christ’s coming made gloriously visible, unlike Satan’s deceptive counterfeit.

2:9 — οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία κατ’ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
παρουσία (counterfeit)“presence, arrival”Same word as v.1/v.8, now applied to the lawless one — a deliberate parody”coming,” “arrival”Satan’s agent stages a false, imitation “parousia” mimicking Christ’s true one降临 — must match v.1/v.8 exactlyCritical. This is the single most important cross-verse consistency requirement in the passage: rendering Christ’s parousia as 降临 but the lawless one’s parousia with a demoted word (e.g. 来, “comes,” as CUV itself does) destroys Paul’s intentional counterfeit-parousia parallel. Retain 降临 for both, adding a contextual clause (“这不法的人的『降临』…” ) making clear this is a false, imitation coming.
ἐνέργεια (energeia)“operative working, effectual activity”active production of effect, often of supernatural agency in Paul”working,” “activity,” “operation”Satan’s active empowerment of the lawless one’s deceptive display运行 / 作为 — recommend against CUV’s 运动, which in modern Mandarin overwhelmingly means “exercise” or “(political/social) movement” and risks sounding like “Satan’s exercise routine” or “Satan’s movement” to a contemporary readerMedium-High. Flag for update: CUV’s archaic sense of 运动 (“to set in motion, operate”) has drifted semantically in modern usage; the requirements doc mandates modern standard Mandarin, so 运行 or 作为 should be used in new curriculum material instead.
Σατανᾶς (Satanas)“Satan” (transliterated from Hebrew via Aramaic, “adversary”)proper name of the personal, malevolent chief adversary of God”Satan,” “the Adversary”Direct personal agency behind the lawless one’s power — not an impersonal evil force撒但 (Sādàn) — standard Chinese Christian transliterationCritical. Must remain a proper name for a personal being; must not be diffused into an impersonal “evil influence” or folk-demon (鬼, guǐ) framing, which would flatten the specific spiritual-warfare theology of this verse.
δύναμις, σημεῖα, τέρατα ψεύδους (dynamis, sēmeia, terata pseudous)“power, signs, and wonders of falsehood”ψεύδους (genitive “of falsehood”) grammatically qualifies all three nouns collectively, not merely the last”all power, signs, and lying wonders” (some translations narrow the qualifier to only “wonders”)A counterfeit triad of supernatural display — power imitating δύναμις θεοῦ (Romans 1:16), signs and wonders imitating true apostolic/prophetic confirmation, all of it false异能、神迹、和一切虚假的奇事 — but note translation requirement belowCritical. Translation must make explicit that ALL THREE nouns are qualified as false/deceptive (not only “wonders,” as a surface reading of CUV’s word order might suggest). Also: NEVER render this counterfeit δύναμις with the baseline’s 神的大能 (reserved for God’s true salvific power, Romans 1:16); use 异能 (“strange/unusual power”) to preserve the divine/demonic distinction even though the Greek word is identical.

2:10 — καὶ ἐν πάσῃ ἀπάτῃ ἀδικίας τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις, ἀνθ’ ὧν τὴν ἀγάπην τῆς ἀληθείας οὐκ ἐδέξαντο εἰς τὸ σωθῆναι αὐτούς

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
ἀπάτη (apatē)“deceit, trickery”active, cunning deception (cf. Eph 4:22 “deceitful desires”)“deception,” “deceit”Deception’s instrumental role in the lawless one’s work against those who reject the truth诡诈 (guǐzhà)Medium.
ἀδικία (adikia)“unrighteousness, injustice”direct antonym of δικαιοσύνη”unrighteousness,” “wickedness,” “wrongdoing”The moral character both received (v.10, deceived by it) and chosen/loved (v.12, “took pleasure in”) by those who reject the truth不义 (bùyì)Medium. Deliberate structural antonym-pairing with 义 (righteousness, baseline Critical term); teaching should explicitly pair the two terms to reinforce the justification-doctrine contrast already trained in the Romans curriculum.
ἀπόλλυμι (apollymi, ptc. ἀπολλυμένοις)“to perish, be destroyed”the ongoing state/process of those heading toward final ruin”those who are perishing”Same root as υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας (v.3); links this verse’s “perishing ones” to the lawless one’s own destiny灭亡的人 (mièwáng de rén)High. Keep the 灭亡 root consistent with v.3’s 灭亡之子 to preserve the lexical link.
ἀλήθεια (alētheia)“truth”reality as disclosed by God, ultimately embodied in Christ (cf. John 14:6)“the truth,” “truth”The gospel truth rejected by those who instead loved unrighteousness — refusal of ἀλήθεια is what makes them vulnerable to Satan’s ψεῦδος (lie)真理 (zhēnlǐ)High. 真理 is heavily used in secular/scientific/philosophical Mandarin registers (abstract propositional truth); teaching must anchor it concretely to the revealed truth of the gospel and the person of Christ, not merely “correct information” or an impersonal Daoist/Buddhist notion of ultimate reality (真如, 道).
σῴζω (sōzō)“to save, rescue, deliver”full salvation from sin’s guilt and wrath, received by faith”saved,” “so as to be saved”The stated purpose for which the truth is normally received — rejecting it forecloses this saving purpose得救 (dé jiù) — verb form of baseline’s 救恩 (salvation)Critical (inherits baseline risk for salvation; verb form must equally avoid 解脱/超度 framings).

2:11 — καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
πέμπω (pempō)“to send”dispatch, cause to come”sends,” “God sends”God’s own judicial action — he actively sends the delusion, not merely permits it差(遣)/给 — CUV: 给 (gěi, “gives/sends”)Medium.
ἐνέργεια πλάνης (energeia planēs)“a working/operation of error, a deluding influence”active, effectual power that produces error/wandering-astray”a strong delusion,” “a spirit of error,” “a deluding influence”This is judicial hardening — God’s righteous judgment actively deepening the self-chosen blindness of those who rejected the truth (structurally identical to Romans 1:24-28’s “God gave them over”)叫人生发错谬的心 / 迷惑的力量 — recommend 迷惑的作为 over CUV’s 生发错误的心High. 错误/错谬 alone reads as a neutral secular “mistake”; the doctrine here is judicial, active, divinely-sent hardening as an act of righteous judgment — connect explicitly to the “God’s Righteous Judgment” doctrine and to Romans 1’s parallel “God gave them over,” which the Romans curriculum has already established.
πιστεύω τῷ ψεύδει (pisteuō tō pseudei)“to believe the lie”trusting/believing a specific, definite falsehood (the lawless one’s counterfeit claims)“believe the lie,” “believe what is false”The tragic outcome of judicial hardening — belief redirected from ἀλήθεια to ψεῦδος信从虚谎 / 相信那谎言Medium.

2:12 — ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ

Greek (translit.)Literal meaningSemantic rangeEnglish variantsContextual theological meaningMandarin renderingRisk
κρίνω (krinō, here κριθῶσιν)“to judge”forensic, final judgment/condemnation”be judged,” “be condemned”God’s righteous verdict as the stated purpose (ἵνα) of the sequence just described — judgment is not incidental but intended被定罪 (bèi dìngzuì)High. Central term for the “God’s Righteous Judgment” doctrine; connects directly to 1:5’s δικαία κρίσις (see Chapter 1 below) and to the 报应/ἐκδίκησις finding.
εὐδοκέω (eudokeō)“to be well pleased, take delight in”positive delight/approval, not mere passive tolerance”took pleasure in,” “delighted in,” “approved”Active, willing preference for unrighteousness over truth — moral responsibility is retained even under judicial hardening喜爱 (xǐ’ài)Medium. Must convey active delight/choice, not passive drifting, to preserve the moral-responsibility dimension alongside the judicial-hardening dimension of vv.10-11.

Cross-Cutting Findings from the Core Passage (flag for Language Package)

  1. παρουσία consistency (Critical). The same Mandarin term (recommended: 降临) must render παρουσία in both v.1/v.8 (Christ’s true coming) and v.9 (the lawless one’s counterfeit coming). Varying the term — as CUV itself does (降临 vs. 来) — destroys Paul’s deliberate literary/theological parody of a false parousia mimicking the true one.
  2. δύναμις asymmetry (Critical). The same Greek root δύναμις denotes both God’s saving power (Romans 1:16, 神的大能, baseline Critical term) and Satan’s counterfeit power here (v.9). The Mandarin package must NOT use 神的大能 for the latter; 异能 (or similar) preserves the divine/demonic distinction the baseline’s own vocabulary architecture depends on.
  3. ἐνέργεια modernization (Medium-High). CUV’s rendering of ἐνέργεια as 运动 (“movement/exercise” in contemporary usage) is a diachronic trap for a modern-register curriculum; recommend 运行 or 作为.
  4. Grammatical gender flattening of ὁ κατέχων / τὸ κατέχον (High). Mandarin’s gender-neutral 的-nominalization cannot reproduce the Greek’s neuter-to-masculine shift across vv.6-7, which many interpreters treat as exegetically significant. Requires a supplementary theologian’s note, not a lexical solution.
  5. μυστήριον register mismatch (Medium-High). CUV’s 2 Thess-specific 隐意 diverges from the more standard NT 奥秘; recommend standardizing on 奥秘 across the whole curriculum, with a clarifying note against the Daoist esoteric-initiate connotation.

PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 (2 Thessalonians 1:1-12)

Chapter 1 is the letter’s opening greeting, thanksgiving, and an extended statement of God’s Righteous Judgment and Perseverance under Persecution — both doctrines anchor here before the Day-of-the-Lord/Man-of-Lawlessness material of chapter 2.

Cross-cutting finding — the 报应 collision (Critical). CUV renders both ἀνταποδίδωμι (1:6) and ἐκδίκησις (1:8) with 报应 (bàoyìng), the very word the baseline translation_memory.json explicitly rejects under the “sin” entry as carrying Buddhist/folk connotations of impersonal karmic retribution across a person’s fortune or lineage. This is a direct internal tension the Language Package must resolve, not ignore: CUV’s own theological vocabulary uses 报应 positively for God’s own personal act of just repayment (cf. also Romans 12:19, “伸冤在我,我必报应”), while the baseline separately flags 报应 negatively when it functions as impersonal karma. Recommendation: retain 报应 for 2 Thessalonians 1:6/1:8 (preserving continuity with established CUV usage and with Romans 12:19, already inside this curriculum family) but require, without exception, a Critical-tier clarifying note wherever it appears: God’s repayment is the personal, righteous act of a personal Judge who repays according to what people have actually done in response to the gospel — not an impersonal cosmic ledger that automatically balances itself irrespective of a personal Judge’s will. This mirrors the existing baseline discipline around 义 (never let it stand alone without a distinguishing note).

Cross-cutting finding — 沉沦 and Buddhist “sinking in the sea of suffering” (Critical). ὄλεθρος αἰώνιον (1:9) is rendered 永远沉沦. 沉沦 (chénlún, “to sink down”) is also the verb at the center of the common Chinese Buddhist idiom 苦海沉沦 (“sinking in the sea of suffering”), describing beings trapped in the cyclical suffering of samsara. Teaching must make explicit that biblical 永远沉沦 denotes a final, once-for-all exclusion from God’s presence (1:9, “away from the presence of the Lord”), not an ongoing cyclical suffering-state from which further escape or future rebirth remains possible.

Positive note — 刑罚 (Medium). By contrast, δίκη is well-served by 刑罚 (“legal punishment”), which frames the judgment in explicitly judicial/legal terms and therefore does not risk the karma-retribution collision that 报应 raises. Where possible in supplementary teaching material, 刑罚 can be used alongside 报应 to reinforce the judicial (not karmic) frame.

Note on 公义 vs. 义 (Critical). This chapter introduces 公义 (gōngyì) for δίκαιος describing God’s just governing/judging character and action (1:5), distinct from the baseline’s bare 义 (yì), which is reserved for the forensic, imputed righteousness of justification (Romans 3-4). These are related but functionally distinct within the Language Package: 义 = right standing credited to a believer by faith; 公义 = God’s own just character and action in ruling and judging the world. Both must be taught as flowing from the same divine character, but 公义 must never be substituted into a justification-by-faith context, and 义 must never be substituted into a judgment/governance context, to keep the baseline’s Critical-tier justification doctrine unambiguous.

Chapter 2 (2 Thessalonians 2:1-17)

Verses 2:1-12 (core passage) are fully treated in Part 1 above. This section covers the remainder of the chapter, 2:13-17, which shifts from the Man-of-Lawlessness material to election, sanctification, and — critically for this curriculum — the first explicit “traditions” (παράδοσις) instruction.

στηρίζω (stērizō)“to make firm, establish”strengthening/stabilizing action, often God’s own action toward believers”establish,” “strengthen”2:17 — prayer that God would strengthen believers’ hearts “in every good work and word”坚固 (jiāngù)MediumNew — connects to “Standing Firm” doctrine

παράδοσις (paradosis)“that which is handed down/over”technical Pauline term for authoritative apostolic teaching transmitted orally or in writing — NOT a generic customary practice”traditions,” “teachings,” “instructions”2:15 — “the traditions that you were taught, either by word of mouth or by our letter”; names this curriculum’s fifth core doctrine directly传统 (chuántǒng)CriticalNew — see extended note below

Extended note — παράδοσις / 传统 (Critical, central to this curriculum’s fifth doctrine). 传统 (chuántǒng, “tradition”) is the natural, transparent Mandarin equivalent of παράδοσις, and is recommended as the primary Language Package term because the curriculum doctrine is explicitly named “Standing Firm in the Traditions.” However, 传统 carries substantial risk of collision with:

  1. Confucian ancestral/ritual tradition (传统礼教), associated with filial-piety codes and ancestor veneration;
  2. generic Chinese folk-religious tradition (民间传统信仰);
  3. secular “cultural tradition” broadly (festivals, customs), which would dilute Paul’s specific claim to personal apostolic authority behind the content transmitted.

CUV itself avoids this collision by rendering παράδοσις in 2:15 not as “tradition” at all but as 教训 (jiàoxùn, “teaching/instruction”), which sidesteps the ancestral-tradition risk but (a) loses the crucial “handed-down, received-and-preserved” nuance central to Paul’s argument for apostolic authority and continuity, and (b) risks a colloquial modern misreading of 教训 as “to teach someone a lesson” (i.e., a reprimand). Recommendation for this Language Package: use 传统 as the primary term (since the curriculum doctrine’s name requires a recognizable “tradition” word), but require a Critical-tier clarifying note on every occurrence: this is authoritative apostolic teaching received from Paul and the apostles, transmitted orally or in writing, not inherited ancestral custom, folk-religious practice, or generic cultural heritage. Where a document needs to avoid ambiguity entirely, 使徒的教导 (“apostolic teaching”) may be used as a fuller explanatory gloss alongside 传统.

Chapter 3 (2 Thessalonians 3:1-18)

Chapter 3 moves to practical instruction: a request for prayer, warning against idleness, and a second explicit “traditions”/standing-firm passage (3:6), directly motivated by the Day-of-the-Lord teaching of chapter 2 (some believers had apparently stopped working, reasoning that ordinary labor was pointless if the Day were imminent or already present).

παράδοσις (paradosis)“tradition”same technical term as 2:15”tradition”3:6 — church discipline instruction: withdraw from any brother walking ἀτάκτως, “not according to the tradition you received from us”传统 (chuántǒng)CriticalReused from 2:15 above (same entry, second occurrence)
ἀτάκτως (ataktōs)“disorderly, out of formation”originally a military term for breaking rank; extended to idle, undisciplined conduct”idle,” “disorderly,” “unruly”3:6, 3:7, 3:11 — specifically describes refusal to work while claiming to await the Day of the Lord, directly linking ch.3’s practical ethics back to ch.2’s eschatology不按规矩而行 (bù àn guījǔ ér xíng)MediumNew

περιεργάζομαι (periergazomai)“to work around/busy oneself uselessly”meddling in others’ affairs instead of one’s own productive work”busybody,” “meddler”3:11 — the practical result of idleness: meddling rather than working专管闲事 (zhuān guǎn xiánshì)LowNew
παραγγέλλω (paraggellō)“to command, charge”authoritative apostolic instruction/directive”command,” “instruct,” “charge”3:4, 3:6, 3:10, 3:12 — Paul’s repeated apostolic directives regarding conduct吩咐 (fēnfù)MediumNew
μιμέομαι (mimeomai)“to imitate”following a modeled pattern of conduct”imitate,” “follow the example of”3:7, 3:9 — imitate Paul’s own pattern of diligent labor效法 (xiàofǎ)MediumNew — flag below
νουθετέω (noutheteō)“to admonish, warn”corrective, relationally warm instruction (distinct from harsh rebuke)“admonish,” “warn”3:15 — “warn him as a brother,” within a restorative, not punitive, discipline framework劝戒 (quànjiè)Low-MediumNew — reuses 劝 root already established in baseline’s 劝勉
ἐντρέπω (entrepō)“to put to shame, cause to feel shame”inward, restorative shame intended to produce repentance and reconciliation”be ashamed,” “feel shame”3:14 — “so that he may feel ashamed,” within church discipline aimed at restoration羞愧 (xiūkuì)MediumNew — flag below

φυλάσσω (phylassō)“to guard, protect”protective custody/keeping”guard,” “protect”3:3 — the Lord will guard believers “from the evil one” (τοῦ πονηροῦ, likely Satan, linking back to 2:9)保护 (bǎohù)LowNew

Flag — μιμέομαι / 效法 (Medium). 效法 (xiàofǎ) carries classical/Confucian resonance (“to imitate the ancient sage-kings,” 效法先王), which could suggest Confucian moral self-cultivation by emulating a virtuous exemplar. Teaching should clarify that imitating Paul’s pattern of diligent labor is imitation of a Spirit-empowered, gospel-shaped life, not self-directed moral cultivation of an independent virtue.

Flag — ἐντρέπω / 羞愧 (Medium). Church-discipline shame (羞愧, an inward, restorative recognition meant to produce repentance and reconciliation to the brother) must be clearly distinguished from social face-loss (面子, miànzi) dynamics already flagged as a translation risk in the baseline’s glory entry. This connects to the AI Translation Requirements’ existing “honor/face (面子) dynamics” native-speaker review flag category.

Flag — ῥύομαι / 脱离 (Medium). 脱离 (“escape, be freed from”) is safe and low-risk when describing deliverance from persecution/evil people (3:2) but must not be allowed to drift, by loose extension, into a soteriological “liberation from a cycle of suffering” register — the same caution the baseline already applies to 解脱 under the salvation doctrine, though 脱离 itself is not on the forbidden list.

No new terms: the closing greeting of 3:16-18 (χάρις, εἰρήνη, κύριος, ἀδελφοί, ἀσπασμός/“greeting,” σημεῖον used here in the sense of an authenticating mark rather than a supernatural sign) reuses vocabulary already analyzed above; no additional glossary entries required.
