Core Glossary
08 — Core Glossary: Hosea (English → Mandarin)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing theological and proper-noun term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, across the entire book of Hosea (chapters 1-14) and the core passage (Hosea 11:1-9). Risk tiers, definitions, and review-routing follow the same methodology as the baseline Romans doctrine_risk_registry.json (Critical/High/Medium/Low). Terms marked “(baseline reuse)” are already recorded in the Romans translation_memory.json and MUST be rendered exactly as recorded there — no new decision is made for these terms in this document. All other terms are proposed as NEW additions to translation memory for the Hosea curriculum, pending Phase 1 Step 2+ formalization.
Section A — Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (no new rendering decision)
| Term (EN) | Mandarin (baseline) | Risk (baseline) | Hosea chapters where it recurs | Note for Hosea context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| God | 神 (Shén) | Critical | 1-14 (pervasive) | Hosea 11:9’s “I am God, and not man” is a load-bearing use; reuse exactly. |
| Lord | 主 (zhǔ) | Critical | contextual (title use) | Distinguish from the personal covenant name YHWH (see Section B, “LORD”). |
| Israel | 以色列 (Yǐsèliè) | Medium | 1-14 (pervasive) | Refers to the covenant nation, and in Hosea specifically often to the estranged/unfaithful covenant partner. |
| David | 大卫 (Dàwèi) | Medium | 3:5 | ”David their king” — messianic-covenant echo; connect to baseline Davidic Covenant doctrine. |
| righteousness | 义 (yì) | Critical | 2:19-20; 10:12 | Reuse baseline’s Confucian-virtue caution; in Hosea paired repeatedly with chesed (see Section B). |
| covenant | 约 (yuē) | High | thematic (implicit throughout; marriage = covenant) | The marriage metaphor is itself a covenant-relationship image; reuse 约 whenever “covenant” is named explicitly (e.g., in teaching notes on the marriage metaphor). |
| holy | 圣洁 (shèngjié) | High | thematic | Background for “Holy One” (Section B) at 11:9. |
| sin | 罪 (zuì) | High | thematic (idolatry as sin) | Hosea’s zanah/idolatry vocabulary (Section B) functions as this curriculum’s primary “sin” language; 罪 remains the general term when the text speaks abstractly of transgression (e.g., 4:8, 8:11, 9:9, 13:12). |
| father | 父 (fù) | High | 11:1-4 (implied paternal imagery) | God’s paternal tenderness toward Israel as “son” (Section B); reuse baseline’s ancestor-veneration caution. |
| calling / called | 呼召 / 蒙召的 | High | thematically resonant (11:1-2) | Different Hebrew root (qara) than the Pauline κλῆσις/κλητός family; thematic, not lexical, continuity — do not treat as a direct lexical match. |
| salvation | 救恩 (jiùēn) | Critical | thematic; resonates with 何西阿 (Hosea’s name) and 13:14 | Reuse baseline’s forbidden-substitution rules (never 解脱/超度) for Hosea’s ransom-from-Sheol/Death language (13:14). |
| son of God (Christological) | 神的儿子 (Shén de érzi) | Critical | contrast term for 11:1 | Must be explicitly distinguished from Hosea 11:1’s corporate/national “son” (Israel) — see Section B, “son (corporate).” |
Section B — New Terms Proposed for the Hosea Curriculum
| Term (EN) | Original (Hebrew) / Transliteration | Mandarin Rendering | Risk | Chapters | Rationale / Collision Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LORD (YHWH, the divine covenant name) | יהוה / YHWH | 耶和华 (Yēhéhuá) | Critical | 1-14 (pervasive) | The personal covenant name of God, distinct from the generic 神 (God) baseline term. Hosea’s entire marriage metaphor depends on YHWH being Israel’s personal covenant partner, not merely “a deity.” Must always be rendered 耶和华, per established CUV convention, never softened to an impersonal generic term. |
| steadfast love (chesed) | חֶסֶד / chesed | 慈爱 (cí’ài) | Critical | 2:19; 4:1; 6:4; 6:6; 10:12; 12:6; 14:4 | Central covenant-loyalty term of the book. NEVER allow collapse into Buddhist 慈悲 (compassion toward all sentient beings); chesed is bound to a specific covenant relationship and its promises. Some CUV editions render 6:6 as 良善 — flag as an alternate but recommend uniform 慈爱 across all occurrences for cross-passage consistency (per baseline’s cross-document consistency rule). |
| whoredom / spiritual adultery (zanah) | זָנָה / zanah; זְנוּנִים / zenunim | 淫乱 (yínluàn, noun) / 行淫 (xíngyín, verb) | Critical | 1:2; 2:2-5; 3:3; 4:10-15; 5:3-4; 6:10; 9:1 | The book’s controlling metaphor: idolatry = covenant-breaking spiritual adultery. Must always retain covenantal/metaphorical force, never reduced to isolated sexual ethics teaching divorced from the idolatry referent. Load-bearing for the doctrine “Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking.” |
| Baal (deity name / wordplay with “husband/master”) | בַּעַל / Ba’al; בְּעָלִים / be’alim (pl.) | 巴力 (Bālì) | Critical | 2:8; 2:13; 2:16-17; 9:10; 11:2; 13:1 | Never gloss as a generic “master/lord” without identifying the specific rival Canaanite deity. The Hebrew word’s double meaning (“Baal” the god / “husband, master”) drives the wordplay of 2:16-17 (בַּעְלִי vs אִישִׁי) — requires a footnote wherever this pun occurs. |
| return / repentance (shuv) — relational sense | שׁוּב / shuv (toward God) | 归向 (guīxiàng) | Critical | 3:5; 5:4; 5:15; 6:1; 7:10; 11:5; 14:1-2 | Hosea’s central theological verb in its relational sense. Must be rendered identically across every occurrence to preserve the book’s structural arc (from refusal to return, to the climactic imperative “Return, O Israel”). Distinct from the physical-return sense (see next entry) and from generic NT 悔改 (repentance), though thematically adjacent. |
| return (shuv) — physical/geographic sense | שׁוּב / shuv (toward a place) | 归回 (guīhuí) | High | 8:13; 9:3; 11:5 | The physical-return sense (e.g., “they shall not return to Egypt”); kept distinct from the relational 归向 above per established CUV practice, preserving Hosea’s wordplay on the same root used in two senses. |
| compassion / relenting (racham, nacham) | רַחֲמִים / rachamim; נחם / nacham | 怜悯 (liánmǐn) / 怜爱 (lián’ài) / 回心转意 (huíxīn zhuǎnyì, “heart-turning,” for the verb nacham) | Critical | 1:6-7 (negated: Lo-Ruhamah); 2:19; 2:23; 11:8; 14:3 | God’s personal, covenantal compassion toward his specific called people — never impersonal Buddhist universal compassion (慈悲) extended without covenant particularity. The name-reversal arc (Lo-Ruhamah “not pitied” → restored compassion) is load-bearing for “God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness.” |
| idols / idolatry (general) | עֲצַבִּים / atsabim; פְּסִלִים / pesilim | 偶像 (ǒuxiàng) | High | 4:17; 8:4; 10:1-2; 11:2; 13:2; 14:8 | Standard term; must be distinguished from ancestor-veneration objects (祖先牌位) in Chinese folk practice so the polemic is understood as specifically anti-idol-worship, not generically anti-image. |
| Sheol / Death (personified) | שְׁאוֹל / Sheol; מָוֶת / Mavet | 阴间 (yīnjiān) / 死亡 (sǐwáng) | Critical | 13:14 | 阴间 must not be conflated with the retributive multi-tiered hell of Chinese Buddhist/folk cosmology (地狱) nor with the ancestral realm requiring ongoing ritual appeasement. Quoted triumphantly in 1 Corinthians 15:55; reuse baseline’s forbidden-substitution rules for “salvation” here. |
| ransom / redeem (padah, ga’al) | פדה / padah; גאל / ga’al | 救赎 (jiùshú) | Critical | 13:14 | NEVER 解脱 or 超度 (baseline forbidden substitutions for salvation apply directly). God’s own act of deliverance from death for the living, not a posthumous ritual. |
| son (corporate/national, distinct from Christological Sonship) | נַעַר / na’ar; בֵּן / ben | 儿子 (érzi) | High | 1:10 (“sons of the living God”); 11:1 | Must be explicitly distinguished from the baseline’s Critical Christological term 神的儿子 (Son of God). Corporate/national/adoptive sonship here; typologically reapplied to Christ in Matthew 2:15 without collapsing the categories. |
| Holy One (qadosh, as divine title) | קָדוֹשׁ / qadosh | 圣者 (shèngzhě) | High | 11:9 | Must be sharply distinguished from 圣人 (Confucian “sage,” already Critical/High-flagged in the baseline). Qadosh names God’s transcendent, wholly-other holiness, not a human moral-perfection category. |
| betroth (aras) | אָרַשׂ / aras | 聘 (pìn) | High | 2:19-20 | God’s gracious covenant-initiating act; must not be read as a commercial bride-price transaction (彩礼) despite ch.3’s literal purchase-price motif for Gomer, which is a distinct (though related) image. |
| knowledge of God (da’at Elohim / yada) | דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים / da’at Elohim; יָדַע / yada | 认识神 (rènshi Shén) | High | 2:20; 4:1; 4:6; 5:4; 6:3; 6:6; 11:3; 13:4 | Relational, covenantal, experiential knowing — not Confucian intellectual/moral self-cultivation (格物致知) nor Buddhist/Daoist enlightenment-attainment (悟). Central diagnostic term for the book’s critique of Israel. |
| justice (mishpat) | מִשְׁפָּט / mishpat | 公平 (gōngpíng) / 公正 (gōngzhèng) | High | 2:19; 5:1; 5:11; 12:6 | Paired repeatedly with chesed (慈爱) and righteousness (义) as covenant-quality vocabulary; keep pairing consistent across occurrences. |
| faithfulness (emunah) | אֱמוּנָה / emunah | 信实 (xìnshí) | Medium | 2:20 | Completes the five-quality betrothal list of 2:19-20 alongside righteousness, justice, chesed, and compassion. |
| cords of kindness, bands of love | חַבְלֵי אָדָם / עֲבֹתוֹת אַהֲבָה | 慈绳爱索 (cí shéng ài suǒ) | Medium | 11:4 | Established poetic CUV compound; must be taught as gentle relational restraint, not Confucian relational-duty bonds (礼/孝) or karmic bonds (缘/业). |
| yoke (‘ol) | עֹל / ‘ol | 轭 (‘è) | Medium | 10:11; 11:4 | Dual valence: negative (foreign bondage, ch.10) vs. positive (God easing the burden, 11:4) — context-dependent, flag for translators. |
| lion (aryeh, shachal) | אֲרִי / שַׁחַל | 狮子 (shīzi) | High | 5:14; 11:10; 13:7-8 | Dual valence: judgment-imagery (5:14; 13:7-8) vs. homecoming-summons imagery (11:10) — same animal, opposite rhetorical function; context must govern tone. |
| dove (yonah) | יוֹנָה / yonah | 鸽子 (gēzi) | Medium | 7:11; 11:11 | Negative (“silly dove,” political vacillation, 7:11) vs. positive (trembling homecoming flock, 11:11) — Chinese cultural dove-symbolism is largely neutral, so valence must be established by context/explicit qualifiers in-text. |
| dew (tal) | טַל / tal | 露水 (lùshuǐ) | Medium | 6:4; 13:3; 14:5 | Negative (fickle, fleeting devotion, 6:4/13:3) vs. positive (God’s own sustaining presence, 14:5) — deliberate thematic reversal; flag for teaching. |
| calf / calf idol (egel) | עֵגֶל / egel | 牛犊 (niúdú) | High | 8:5-6; 10:5; 13:2 | Recalls the golden calf of Exodus 32 and Jeroboam’s calves (1 Kings 12); “men kiss the calves” (13:2) is a specific idol-veneration gesture requiring cultural sensitivity in teaching contexts with ritual-veneration practices. |
| wife of whoredom / harlot (eshet zenunim) | אֵשֶׁת זְנוּנִים / eshet zenunim | 淫妇 (yínfù) | High | 1:2 | Must be framed as a divinely commanded prophetic sign-act, not a moral tale about one woman nor pornographic content. |
| Gomer | גֹּמֶר / Gomer | 歌篾 (Gēmiè) | Low | 1:3 | Proper name; standard transliteration. |
| Jezreel (place-name / wordplay “God sows”) | יִזְרְעֶאל / Yizre’el | 耶斯列 (Yēsīliè) | High | 1:4-5; 1:11; 2:22-23 | Double meaning (judgment-site history / “God sows” future promise) lost in bare transliteration; footnote required, especially to catch the reversal from judgment-name to hope-name. |
| Lo-Ruhamah | לֹא רֻחָמָה / Lo-Ruchamah | 罗·路·哈玛 (Luó Lù Hāmǎ) | High | 1:6; 2:23 | ”Not shown compassion”; name reversed later in the book — track the reversal explicitly. |
| Lo-Ammi | לֹא עַמִּי / Lo-Ammi | 罗阿米 (Luó Āmǐ) | High | 1:9; 1:10; 2:23 | ”Not my people”; name reversed later (“sons of the living God,” 1:10) — cf. Romans 9:25-26 cross-reference; match rendering across curricula. |
| Ephraim | אֶפְרַיִם / Ephrayim | 以法莲 (Yǐfǎlián) | Low | pervasive (4-14) | Metonym for the northern kingdom; established proper-name pattern. |
| Assyria | אַשּׁוּר / Ashur | 亚述 (Yàshù) | Low | 5:13; 7:11; 8:9; 9:3; 10:6; 11:5; 11:11; 12:1; 14:3 | Standard historical-geographic proper noun. |
| Bethel / Beth-aven (wordplay: “house of God” vs. “house of iniquity”) | בֵּית־אֵל / בֵּית אָוֶן | 伯特利 (Bótèlì) / derogatory pun rendering (footnoted) | Medium | 4:15; 5:8; 10:5, 8, 15; 12:4 | Prophetic mockery renaming Israel’s cultic center; wordplay untranslatable directly, requires footnote. |
| Jacob | יַעֲקֹב / Ya’aqov | 雅各 (Yǎgè) | Low | 12:2-4, 12 | Standard proper-name transliteration, patriarchal exemplar/warning. |
| threshing floor (goren) | גֹּרֶן / goren | 禾场 (héchǎng) | Low | 9:1-2 | Standard agricultural term. |
| sow the wind, reap the whirlwind | רוּחַ / סוּפָה | 种的是风,收的是暴风 | Medium | 8:7 | Structurally similar to the Chinese proverb 种瓜得瓜 — ensure the covenant-curse (not generic-karma) frame is retained. |
| Baal-peor | בַּעַל פְּעוֹר / Ba’al Pe’or | 巴力·毗珥 (Bālì Pí’ěr) | Medium | 9:10 | Compound name reusing established 巴力 transliteration; footnote to Numbers 25. |
| luxuriant vine | גֶּפֶן בּוֹקֵק / gephen boqeq | 茂盛的葡萄树 (màoshèng de pútáo shù) | Medium | 10:1 | Ironic image: prosperity misused for greater idolatry; distinguish from other, positive biblical vine imagery. |
| fierce/burning anger (charon aph) | חֲרוֹן אַף / charon aph | 猛烈的怒气 (měngliè de nùqì) | High | 8:5; 11:9; 13:11 | Genuine divine wrath against covenant-breaking, held in tension with — not negated by — God’s compassion; load-bearing for “Judgment and Compassion Held Together.” |
| I am God and not man | אֵל אָנֹכִי וְלֹא־אִישׁ | 我是神,并非人 | Critical | 11:9 | Theological center of the doctrine of divine constancy underwriting steadfast love; must not imply God is merely an idealized human or deified hero-figure. |
| I will love them freely (nedavah) | נְדָבָה / nedavah | 甘心爱他们 (gānxīn ài tāmen) | Critical | 14:4 | Adverbial intensifier of grace — love given voluntarily, without being earned; functions for Hosea as Romans 3:24/11:5-6 function for the baseline’s Grace doctrine. |
| the ways of the LORD are right | דַּרְכֵי יְהוָה יְשָׁרִים | 耶和华的道是正直的 | High | 14:9 | 道 here means “way/path” (ordinary ethical-relational sense) — must NOT be conflated with the baseline’s Christological 道成肉身 (incarnation) despite the shared character 道. |
| Hosea (prophet’s name, “salvation”) | הוֹשֵׁעַ / Hoshea | 何西阿 (Héxī’ā) | Low | 1:1 (title) | Transliteration; root meaning resonates with 救恩 (salvation) — worth a brief teaching note. |
Section C — Risk Summary for Hosea-Specific New Terms
| Risk Tier | Count of New Terms | Review Routing (per baseline methodology) |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | 10 | Human theologian review required for every occurrence |
| High | 15 | Human theologian review required |
| Medium | 11 | Native speaker review recommended |
| Low | 8 | Automated review sufficient |
Note: This glossary is a Phase 1 Step 1 deliverable feeding into subsequent doctrine-risk registry and translation-memory formalization steps for the Hosea curriculum. All Critical and High tier terms above require the same theologian-review escalation rules established in the baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md, extended to this curriculum without contradiction.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: 神
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: Divine Constancy (I Am God, and Not Man) / Deity
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷
Original: אֱלֹהִים
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Baseline note retained: this package standardizes on 神 (Shen edition) rather than 上帝; never use 天 or 老天爷 alone. Hosea extension: 11:9’s climactic self-identification ‘I am God, and not man’ (我是神,并非人) is a load-bearing use of this exact term across the whole book; monotheistic, personal reference must remain unambiguous against 神’s common-noun folk-religious usage (city gods, kitchen god) at every occurrence across all 14 chapters.
Lord
Approved rendering: 主
Transliteration: zhǔ
Doctrine: Lordship of Christ / Divine Sovereignty
Rejected alternatives: 主人, 老爷
Original: κύριος (LXX) / אָדוֹן
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: used as a title alongside the personal covenant name 耶和华 (YHWH); must never be softened toward 主人 or 老爷, and must be kept sharply distinct from 巴力 (Baal), whose underlying Hebrew word also means ‘husband/master’ — never gloss Baal using 主-adjacent vocabulary (see baal entry, Hosea 2:16-17).
Righteousness
Approved rendering: 义
Transliteration: yì
Doctrine: Betrothal as Covenant Renewal / Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 道德, 善行
Original: צֶדֶק
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: paired repeatedly with 慈爱 (chesed) as covenant-quality vocabulary constituting God’s own betrothal-gift character (2:19-20) and as a call to covenant renewal (10:12; 12:6). Some CUV editions render the righteousness/justice pair in 2:19-20 with the compound 仁义 (rényì), the paradigmatic Confucian virtue-pair; if retained, this COMPOUNDS the baseline’s existing Confucian-virtue caution and requires an even stronger clarifying note that this is God’s own gift constituting the covenant relationship, not a cultivated ethical achievement earning it.
Salvation
Approved rendering: 救恩
Transliteration: jiùēn
Doctrine: Redemption from Death (Hosea 13:14) / Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度, 得道
Original: יָשַׁע (root of הוֹשֵׁעַ, Hosea’s own name)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: the prophet’s own name הוֹשֵׁעַ (何西阿, Hoshea) shares the root meaning ‘he saves’; reuse baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule (NEVER 解脱 or 超度) for the book’s redemption-from-death promise at 13:14, quoted triumphantly in 1 Corinthians 15:55.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: 神的儿子
Transliteration: Shén de érzi
Doctrine: Corporate Sonship of Israel (cited only as Christological contrast term)
Rejected alternatives: 天子, 神人
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: cited SOLELY as the contrast term against which Hosea 11:1’s corporate/national sonship (see son_corporate_national entry) must be distinguished. Never let 11:1 be taught as if it directly names Christ’s unique, eternal Sonship; Matthew 2:15’s typological reuse applies the pattern to Christ without collapsing the categories.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: 复活
Transliteration: fùhuó
Doctrine: Resurrection Typology in Hosea (6:2, 13:14)
Rejected alternatives: 轮回, 投胎, 还魂
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: Hosea 6:2’s restoration language (‘after two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up’) and 13:14’s death-defeating redemption are typological resonances with, not direct predictions of, Christ’s individual bodily resurrection — the immediate Hosea context is national restoration. Reuse baseline’s forbidden substitutions (never 轮回, 投胎, 还魂) whenever this typology is taught.
Grace
Approved rendering: 恩典
Transliteration: ēndiǎn
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness / Grace
Rejected alternatives: 功德, 造化, 福气, 阴德
Original: cf. חֶסֶד, נְדָבָה (functional equivalents)
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: functional equivalents chesed (慈爱) and nedavah (甘心, 14:4, ‘I will love them freely’) carry this doctrine’s weight in Hosea; wherever ‘grace’ itself is named in teaching materials on 14:4 and 2:19-20’s gift-based betrothal, this exact term must be used. Never 功德, 阴德, or 造化.
Yhwh Lord Covenant Name
Approved rendering: 耶和华
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Rejected alternatives: 泛称的神(在婚姻隐喻语境中替代耶和华), 老天爷
Original: יהוה
Category: God
New term for this curriculum. The personal, covenantal proper name of God, distinct from the generic 神 (Elohim/God). Hosea’s entire marriage metaphor depends on YHWH being Israel’s personal covenant partner, not merely a generic deity-title. Must always be rendered 耶和华 per established CUV convention; never softened to an impersonal generic term, which would undercut the personal-name basis of the marriage-covenant bond central to the book.
Chesed Steadfast Love
Approved rendering: 慈爱
Transliteration: cí’ài
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: 慈悲, 恩惠(作为固定替代)
Original: חֶסֶד
Category: God
New term; the central covenant-loyalty word of the book (2:19; 4:1; 6:4; 6:6; 10:12; 12:6; 14:4). Root character 慈 overlaps with Buddhist 慈悲 (impartial compassion extended to all sentient beings out of a doctrine of universal suffering); chesed must be taught as covenant loyalty bound to one specific relationship and its promises, never free-floating universal benevolence. Some CUV editions render 6:6 as 良善 — recommend uniform 慈爱 across ALL occurrences for cross-passage consistency, since Hosea’s and Jesus’s own argument (Matthew 9:13; 12:7) depends on recognizing the same divine attribute throughout the book and beyond.
Racham Compassion
Approved rendering: 怜悯 / 怜爱 / 回心转意(动词形式,nacham)
Transliteration: liánmǐn / lián’ài / huíxīn zhuǎnyì
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness / Judgment and Compassion Held Together
Rejected alternatives: 慈悲(作为泛称的宇宙同情)
Original: רַחֲמִים / נחם
Category: God
New term. Embedded in the Lo-Ruhamah name-reversal arc (1:6-7; 2:23) and climaxing at 11:8’s ‘my compassion is greatly stirred.’ Must not be rendered as Buddhist 慈悲 (impartial, universal compassion) — Hosea’s compassion is personal, particular, and directed specifically toward God’s elect covenant people. CAUTION: the verb form 回心转意 (nacham, 11:8) must be taught alongside 我是神,并非人 (11:9) as complementary, not contradictory — God’s compassion overruling his own resolve to judge, never God’s character changing or vacillating like a human’s, since 11:9 immediately denies exactly that reading.
I Am God Not Man
Approved rendering: 我是神,并非人
Transliteration: wǒ shì Shén, bìngfēi rén
Doctrine: Divine Constancy (I Am God, and Not Man)
Rejected alternatives: 我如同神一般, 我是至高的圣人
Original: כִּי אֵל אָנֹכִי וְלֹא־אִישׁ
Category: God
New term (11:9). The theological center of the chapter, underwriting the doctrine of divine constancy that grounds steadfast love. Must not be rendered in any way suggesting God is an idealized or deified human figure — a live risk given Chinese folk-religious traditions in which historical culture-heroes (e.g., Guan Yu) are posthumously venerated as gods, which would blur exactly the human/divine distinction this verse insists on maintaining. Render as a complete sentence, never compressed into a slogan or title.
Ransom Redeem
Approved rendering: 救赎
Transliteration: jiùshú
Doctrine: Redemption from Death (Hosea 13:14)
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度
Original: פדה / גאל
Category: Salvation
New term (13:14). Quoted triumphantly in 1 Corinthians 15:55. NEVER render with 解脱 (Buddhist liberation from the cycle of samsara) or 超度 (a posthumous ritual rite performed by monks/priests on behalf of the deceased) — both would catastrophically reverse the verse’s meaning, turning God’s own act of deliverance for the living into a ritual technique applied after death.
Sheol Death
Approved rendering: 阴间 / 死亡
Transliteration: yīnjiān / sǐwáng
Doctrine: Redemption from Death (Hosea 13:14)
Rejected alternatives: 地狱, 阴曹地府
Original: שְׁאוֹל / מָוֶת
Category: Salvation
New term (13:14). 阴间 must not be conflated with the Chinese Buddhist/folk multi-tiered retributive hell (地狱) featuring judges and punishments, nor with the ancestral realm that in folk usage requires ongoing filial ritual appeasement (祭祖). Sheol here is simply the realm of the dead from which God promises deliverance for the living, not a place demanding ongoing ritual offerings from descendants.
Love Freely Nedavah
Approved rendering: 甘心爱他们
Transliteration: gānxīn ài tāmen
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness / Grace
Rejected alternatives: 因他们回转才爱他们(有条件式意译)
Original: נְדָבָה
Category: Salvation
New term (14:4, ‘I will love them freely’). This is Hosea’s clearest single grace statement, functioning exactly as Romans 3:24 and 11:5-6 function for the baseline’s Critical ‘Grace’ doctrine. Must foreclose any reading in which Israel’s return earns God’s healing love, since the text explicitly says the opposite (freely, נְדָבָה, without external compulsion or earned merit) — functionally parallels the baseline’s rejection of 功德 and 阴德 for the term ‘grace.‘
Zanah Spiritual Adultery
Approved rendering: 淫乱 (noun) / 行淫 (verb)
Transliteration: yínluàn / xíngyín
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Rejected alternatives: 不忠(过于淡化的泛称)
Original: זָנָה / זְנוּנִים
Category: Sin
New term; the controlling metaphor of the entire book (1:2; 2:2-5; 3:3; 4:10-15; 5:3-4; 6:10; 9:1). Must always retain its covenantal/metaphorical force pointing to idol-worship; never reduced to an isolated sexual-ethics teaching detached from the idolatry referent, and never softened into a vague ‘disloyalty’ that loses the term’s deliberately visceral force.
Baal
Approved rendering: 巴力
Transliteration: Bālì
Doctrine: The Baal Cult and Syncretistic Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 主人(作为泛称), 夫(未加脚注的泛称)
Original: בַּעַל / בְּעָלִים
Category: Sin
New term. Never gloss as a generic ‘master/lord’ without identifying the specific rival Canaanite deity. The Hebrew word’s double meaning drives the deliberate wordplay of 2:16-17 (בַּעְלִי, ‘my Baal/my master’ vs. אִישִׁי, ‘my husband’) — this pun is the clearest textual demonstration of Baal-worship’s insidious blending with legitimate covenant vocabulary and requires a footnote wherever it occurs (2:8, 13, 16-17; 9:10; 11:2; 13:1). NEVER render using vocabulary overlapping 主 (Lord, reserved for YHWH’s exclusive Lordship).
Shuv Relational Return
Approved rendering: 归向
Transliteration: guīxiàng
Doctrine: The Call to Return and Repentance
Rejected alternatives: 皈依, 反省, 修身, 忏悔
Original: שׁוּב
Category: Repentance
New term; Hosea’s central theological verb in its relational sense (3:5; 5:4; 5:15; 6:1; 7:10; 11:5; 14:1-2). Must be rendered IDENTICALLY at every occurrence to preserve the book’s structural arc from refused return to the climactic imperative ‘Return, O Israel’ (14:1). NEVER use or gloss via 皈依 (Buddhist/Daoist ‘taking refuge’/formal conversion) — the near-homophonic/graphemic proximity (shared 归 root) creates high confusion risk in oral teaching. Also distinct from 归回 (physical return) and from self-effort moral-cultivation vocabulary (反省, 修身) or karmic-purification ritual (忏悔) — denotes restored covenant intimacy initiated by a waiting, already-loving God, never mere behavior modification.
High Risk Terms
Covenant
Approved rendering: 约
Transliteration: yuē
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Rejected alternatives: 合同, 契约
Original: בְּרִית
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: the marriage metaphor throughout the book is itself an extended image of this covenant relationship; avoid commercial-contract framing, which would suggest a negotiated agreement between equal parties rather than a gracious bond God initiates and keeps despite Israel’s unfaithfulness.
Holy
Approved rendering: 圣洁
Transliteration: shèngjié
Doctrine: Divine Constancy (background for the Holy One title)
Rejected alternatives: 清净, 圣人般的
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: forms conceptual background for the divine title 圣者 (Holy One, qadosh) at 11:9 — see holy_one_qadosh entry — though 圣洁 itself is not the term used for that specific title in Hosea.
Sin
Approved rendering: 罪
Transliteration: zuì
Doctrine: Universal Covenant Guilt
Rejected alternatives: 报应, 罪犯式的罪
Original: חַטָּאָה / עָוֹן / פֶּשַׁע
Category: Sin
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: used for general transgression (4:8; 8:11; 9:9; 13:12) alongside the book’s specific idolatry/adultery vocabulary (zanah, 淫乱); reuse baseline’s caution distinguishing moral offense against a personal God from impersonal karmic retribution (报应), a risk heightened in Hosea’s judgment oracles where God’s personal, relenting-capable response (11:8-9) must never be read as an automatic karmic ledger.
Father
Approved rendering: 父
Transliteration: fù
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: 祖先, 老天爷
Original: implied paternal imagery (cf. אָב, av)
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: God’s paternal tenderness toward Israel as ‘son’ (11:1-4) — teaching a toddler to walk, carrying his child — reuses the baseline’s caution distinguishing this from ancestor veneration (祭祖), where care flows from descendants toward ancestors; here God the Father cares for his covenant child, an inverted direction of care from ancestor ritual.
Called
Approved rendering: 蒙召的
Transliteration: méngzhào de
Doctrine: Divine Calling (thematic resonance only in Hosea)
Rejected alternatives: 受命于天, 天命所归
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: used only to draw a THEMATIC (not lexical) connection to Hosea 11:1’s qara (God’s personal summons of Israel out of Egypt), a different Hebrew root entirely from the Pauline κλητός family. Never claim direct etymological identity across Testaments when teaching the connection.
Calling
Approved rendering: 呼召
Transliteration: hūzhào
Doctrine: Divine Calling (thematic resonance only in Hosea)
Rejected alternatives: 天命, 命运
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: same thematic-only caveat as ‘called’ above; must never drift toward 缘分 (yuánfèn, predestined fortuitous connection, folk-Buddhist) when teaching Hosea 11:1’s qara.
Holy One Qadosh
Approved rendering: 圣者
Transliteration: shèngzhě
Doctrine: Divine Constancy (I Am God, and Not Man)
Rejected alternatives: 圣人, 仙, 神仙
Original: קָדוֹשׁ
Category: God
New term. Hosea 11:9’s ‘the Holy One in your midst’ must be sharply distinguished from 圣人 (shèngrén, the Confucian ‘sage’ category reserved for a tiny number of morally perfected figures such as Confucius, styled 至圣) and from folk-Buddhist/Daoist ‘immortal being’ titles (仙, 神仙). Rendering qadosh with any term evoking either would reduce God’s transcendent, categorical otherness to attainable human or legendary moral achievement.
Fierce Anger
Approved rendering: 猛烈的怒气
Transliteration: měngliè de nùqì
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together / Divine Wrath as Genuine
Rejected alternatives: 报应, 天谴(作为泛称的天罚)
Original: חֲרוֹן אַף
Category: God
New term (8:5; 11:9; 13:11). Must not be softened to imply God has no genuine wrath toward covenant-breaking — that would undercut ‘Judgment and Compassion Held Together’ — nor equated with impersonal karmic retribution (报应), a folk-religion risk the baseline already flags for 罪 (sin). God’s anger in Hosea is personal and relationally grounded, executed through real historical agents (Assyria) and, startlingly, by God himself as a lion tearing his own people (13:7-8).
Ways Of The Lord
Approved rendering: 耶和华的道是正直的
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá de dào shì zhèngzhí de
Doctrine: Divine Constancy / book-closing wisdom summary
Original: דַּרְכֵי יְהוָה יְשָׁרִים
Category: God
New term (14:9). 道 (dào) here carries its ordinary Hebrew-derived sense of ‘way/path/conduct,’ NOT the baseline’s Critical Christological compound 道成肉身 (incarnation). Must be explicitly flagged so teachers never conflate this ethical-relational use of 道 with the Christological ‘Word became flesh’ doctrine, despite the shared character.
Son Corporate National
Approved rendering: 儿子
Transliteration: érzi
Doctrine: Corporate Sonship of Israel (Distinguished from Christ’s Sonship)
Rejected alternatives: 神的儿子(作为11:1的译法), 天子
Original: נַעַר / בֵּן
Category: Christology
New term (1:10 ‘sons of the living God’; 11:1 ‘my son’). Must be explicitly distinguished from the baseline’s Critical Christological term 神的儿子 (Son of God). This is corporate, covenantal, adoptive/national sonship, entirely distinct from Christ’s eternal, unique, co-equal Sonship. Matthew 2:15’s typological reuse of Hosea 11:1 applies the pattern to Christ without collapsing the categories — teaching must affirm both without merging them. NEVER substitute 神的儿子 as a ‘fuller’ or ‘more accurate’ rendering of 11:1’s 儿子.
Justice Mishpat
Approved rendering: 公平 / 公正
Transliteration: gōngpíng / gōngzhèng
Doctrine: Betrothal as Covenant Renewal
Rejected alternatives: 法律, 礼
Original: מִשְׁפָּט
Category: Covenant
New term (2:19; 5:1; 5:11; 12:6). Paired repeatedly with 慈爱 (chesed) and 义 (righteousness) as a fixed covenant-quality triad; keep terminology consistent across all occurrences so readers recognize the recurring formula rather than three unrelated virtues.
Betroth Aras
Approved rendering: 聘
Transliteration: pìn
Doctrine: Betrothal as Covenant Renewal / The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Rejected alternatives: 彩礼式的聘礼交换
Original: אָרַשׂ
Category: Covenant
New term (2:19-20). God’s gracious, unilateral covenant-initiating act; must not be read as a commercial bride-price transaction resembling Chinese traditional betrothal-gift customs (彩礼), which would recast the covenant as a negotiated transactional exchange between near-equal parties rather than a sovereign, gracious divine initiative. Distinguish from chapter 3’s literal purchase price for Gomer, a related but distinct image (see gomer entry).
Knowledge Of God
Approved rendering: 认识神
Transliteration: rènshi Shén
Doctrine: Knowledge of God versus Ritual Observance
Rejected alternatives: 格物致知式的知识, 悟
Original: דַּעַת אֱלֹהִים / יָדַע
Category: Covenant
New term; the central diagnostic term for the book’s critique of Israel (2:20; 4:1, 6; 5:4; 6:3, 6; 11:3; 13:4). Must not be rendered through the lens of Confucian intellectual/moral self-cultivation (格物致知, ‘investigating things to extend knowledge’) or Buddhist/Daoist enlightenment-attainment (悟, wù) — both locate the ‘knowing’ in the human knower’s own effort or attainment, whereas biblical da’at Elohim is a relationship initiated and sustained by God.
Wife Of Whoredom
Approved rendering: 淫妇
Transliteration: yínfù
Doctrine: Prophetic Sign-Act (Hosea’s Marriage as Enacted Prophecy)
Original: אֵשֶׁת זְנוּנִים
Category: Sin
New term (1:2). Must be framed explicitly as a divinely commanded prophetic sign-act (comparable to Isaiah’s nakedness in Isaiah 20 or Ezekiel’s siege-model), never moralized as merely one woman’s personal sin nor read as sensational content divorced from its prophetic, covenant-indicting function.
Spirit Of Whoredom
Approved rendering: 淫乱的心 / 淫乱的灵
Transliteration: yínluàn de xīn / yínluàn de líng
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Rejected alternatives: 邪灵(暗示附身而非个人抉择)
Original: רוּח זְנוּנִים
Category: Sin
New term (4:12). Avoid rendering as 邪灵 (‘evil spirit’) in a way that suggests demonic possession absolving personal moral responsibility — the emphasis is a chosen, culpable orientation of the heart, reusing the established zanah/淫乱 vocabulary.
Idols
Approved rendering: 偶像
Transliteration: ǒuxiàng
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Rejected alternatives: 祖先牌位(作为等同物)
Original: עֲצַבִּים / פְּסִלִים
Category: Sin
New term (4:17; 8:4; 10:1-2; 11:2; 13:2; 14:8). Must be distinguished from ancestral tablets used in Chinese folk-religious ancestor veneration (祖先牌位) so the polemic is understood as specifically anti-idol-worship (worship directed to a false god), not generically anti-image.
Calf Idol
Approved rendering: 牛犊
Transliteration: niúdú
Doctrine: The Baal Cult and Syncretistic Idolatry
Original: עֵגֶל
Category: Sin
New term (8:5-6; 10:5; 13:2). Must be flagged as a specific historical idol-type (recalling Exodus 32’s golden calf and Jeroboam’s calves, 1 Kings 12) rather than a generic animal reference. ‘Men kiss the calves’ (13:2) names a specific idol-veneration gesture requiring cultural sensitivity in teaching contexts where readers’ own cultural background may include ritual veneration gestures (incense-offering, bowing, kissing relics) toward images.
Shuv Physical Return
Approved rendering: 归回
Transliteration: guīhuí
Doctrine: The Call to Return and Repentance (physical/geographic sense)
Rejected alternatives: 归向(不可混用)
Original: שׁוּב
Category: Repentance
New term (8:13; 9:3; 11:5, ‘they shall not return to Egypt’). Kept distinct from the relational 归向 per established CUV practice, preserving Hosea’s deliberate wordplay on the same Hebrew root used in two senses within a single verse (most acutely 11:5).
Lion Imagery
Approved rendering: 狮子
Transliteration: shīzi
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together / Divine Wrath as Genuine
Original: אֲרִי / שַׁחַל
Category: Imagery
New term. Dual valence — judgment imagery (5:14; 13:7-8, God as the one who tears his own unfaithful people) versus homecoming-summons imagery (11:10, God’s roar calling exiles home). Same animal image with opposite rhetorical function in different chapters; context, not a fixed connotation, must govern tone.
Jezreel
Approved rendering: 耶斯列
Transliteration: Yēsīliè
Doctrine: The Name-Reversal Motif (Judgment Names Overturned)
Original: יִזְרְעֶאל
Category: Proper Noun
New term. Double-edged: recalls violent judgment (1:4-5, Jehu’s bloodshed, 2 Kings 9-10) yet, by wordplay on ‘sow,’ becomes a future promise of restoration (1:11; 2:22-23). A bare transliteration loses the wordplay entirely; a footnote explaining both associations is REQUIRED wherever the name recurs, especially to catch its ironic reversal later in the book.
Lo Ruhamah
Approved rendering: 罗·路·哈玛
Transliteration: Luó Lù Hāmǎ
Doctrine: The Name-Reversal Motif (Judgment Names Overturned)
Original: לֹא רֻחָמָה
Category: Proper Noun
New term. ‘Not shown compassion’ — a child’s name functioning as a living oracle of withdrawn divine compassion (1:6), later reversed (2:23). MUST retain the gloss ‘不蒙怜悯’ at first occurrence and at each reversal — the transliteration alone carries no meaning in Mandarin, and without the gloss the entire judgment-to-restoration reversal becomes invisible.
Lo Ammi
Approved rendering: 罗阿米
Transliteration: Luó Āmǐ
Doctrine: The Name-Reversal Motif (Judgment Names Overturned)
Original: לֹא עַמִּי
Category: Proper Noun
New term. ‘Not my people’ — the most severe sign-name, a formal renunciation of the covenant relationship (1:9), reversed as ‘sons of the living God’ (1:10/2:23). MUST retain the gloss ‘非我民’. Cross-referenced by Paul in Romans 9:25-26 (part of the baseline curriculum) — rendering must remain consistent with however this same Hosea quotation is rendered in any Romans curriculum materials.
Medium Risk Terms
David
Approved rendering: 大卫
Transliteration: Dàwèi
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant Hope within Hosea’s Restoration Promise
Original: דָּוִד
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: ‘David their king’ (3:5) functions messianically, linking Hosea’s restoration hope forward to the baseline’s Davidic Covenant and Messianic Promise doctrines; teach as covenant-messianic anticipation, not mere historical reminiscence, and keep rendering consistent with any Romans-curriculum usage.
Israel
Approved rendering: 以色列
Transliteration: Yǐsèliè
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Original: יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package (baseline reuse, unchanged). Hosea extension: throughout the book this name frequently denotes the estranged, unfaithful covenant partner rather than a neutral national label; teaching should make clear this is the same people addressed with both severe rebuke and tender restoration promise within the same book.
Faithfulness Emunah
Approved rendering: 信实
Transliteration: xìnshí
Doctrine: Betrothal as Covenant Renewal
Original: אֱמוּנָה
Category: Covenant
New term. Completes the five-quality betrothal list of Hosea 2:19-20 alongside righteousness, justice, chesed, and compassion. Moderate risk of being read as mere human reliability rather than God’s own covenant-keeping character — clarify with context that this describes God’s self-giving in the betrothal, not a human virtue Israel must supply.
Baal Peor
Approved rendering: 巴力·毗珥
Transliteration: Bālì Pí’ěr
Doctrine: The Baal Cult and Syncretistic Idolatry
Original: בַּעַל פְּעוֹר
Category: Sin
New term; compound proper name reusing the established 巴力 transliteration (9:10). A footnote to Numbers 25 is recommended so readers recognize this as the historical anchor-point of the idolatry-plus-immorality pattern Hosea addresses.
High Places
Approved rendering: 高处 / 邱坛
Transliteration: gāochù / qiūtán
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Original: בָּמוֹת
Category: Sin
New term (4:13). Must not be confused with the positive ‘sacred mountain’ reverence found in Chinese folk religion or Daoist sacred-mountain veneration (e.g., the Five Great Mountains, 五岳); flag as specifically censured, illegitimate worship-sites, not a general nature-reverence practice.
Cords Of Kindness
Approved rendering: 慈绳爱索
Transliteration: cí shéng ài suǒ
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Rejected alternatives: 逐字直译式的’人的绳索、爱的绳子’
Original: חַבְלֵי אָדָם / עֲבֹתוֹת אַהֲבָה
Category: God
New term; established poetic CUV compound (11:4). Must be taught as describing gentle, relational restraint, not Confucian relational-duty bonds (礼/孝) or karmic bonds (缘/业) in folk-Buddhist usage.
Yoke
Approved rendering: 轭
Transliteration: ‘è
Doctrine: God’s Steadfast Love (positive valence, 11:4) / covenant-curse bondage (negative valence, ch.10)
Original: עֹל
Category: Imagery
New term. Dual valence across the book: negative (foreign bondage/tribute, 10:11) versus positive (God easing the burden, 11:4); context-dependent — do not default to a uniformly negative connotation across all occurrences.
Dove Imagery
Approved rendering: 鸽子
Transliteration: gēzi
Doctrine: Restoration and Covenant Renewal Hope / Divine Wrath as Genuine
Original: יוֹנָה
Category: Imagery
New term. Negative (‘a silly dove,’ political vacillation between Egypt and Assyria, 7:11) versus positive (trembling homecoming flock, 11:11). Chinese cultural dove-symbolism is largely neutral (unlike the Western ‘dove of peace’ association), so intended valence must be made explicit in-text via qualifying language, not assumed from the image alone.
Dew Imagery
Approved rendering: 露水
Transliteration: lùshuǐ
Doctrine: Restoration and Covenant Renewal Hope
Original: טַל
Category: Imagery
New term. Negative (Israel’s fickle, fleeting devotion, 6:4; 13:3) versus positive (God’s own sustaining presence toward restored Israel, 14:5) — a deliberate thematic reversal; teaching must make the reversal explicit rather than treating each occurrence in isolation.
Luxuriant Vine
Approved rendering: 茂盛的葡萄树
Transliteration: màoshèng de pútáo shù
Doctrine: Covenant Curses as Self-Inflicted Judgment
Original: גֶּפֶן בּוֹקֵק
Category: Imagery
New term (10:1). Must be distinguished from other, positive biblical vine imagery (e.g., John 15) so the specific irony of this passage — prosperity misused for greater apostasy — is not lost.
Sow Wind Reap Whirlwind
Approved rendering: 种的是风,收的是暴风
Transliteration: zhòng de shì fēng, shōu de shì bàofēng
Doctrine: Covenant Curses as Self-Inflicted Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 种瓜得瓜,种豆得豆(既有汉语谚语,不可直接替代)
Original: רוּחַ יִזְרָעוּ וְסוּפָתָה יִקְצֹרוּ
Category: Judgment
New term (8:7). Structurally similar to the existing Chinese proverb 种瓜得瓜,种豆得豆, which carries a flat, impersonal cause-effect (near-karmic) frame; translators must retain the covenant-curse frame (a personal God’s judicial, disproportionate response to specific covenant violation), not a generic impersonal-consequence reading.
Egypt
Approved rendering: 埃及
Transliteration: Āijí
Doctrine: Exodus Typology
Original: מִצְרַיִם
Category: Typology
New term for this curriculum. Grounds Hosea 11:1’s father-son relationship in the historical Exodus. Its typological reuse in Matthew 2:15 requires care so learners understand Hosea addresses Israel’s national history, later recapitulated by Christ, rather than being a direct prophecy about Christ’s infancy.
Bethel Beth Aven
Approved rendering: 伯特利 (footnoted derogatory pun: 伯亚文 / ‘House of Iniquity’)
Transliteration: Bótèlì / Bóyàwén
Doctrine: Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Rejected alternatives: 在正文中直接造出永久性贬义地名
Original: בֵּית־אֵל / בֵּית אָוֶן
Category: Proper Noun
New term (4:15; 5:8; 10:5, 8, 15; 12:4). Prophetic mockery renaming Israel’s corrupted cultic center (‘House of God’ to ‘House of Iniquity’) is untranslatable directly; render 伯特利 as the base transliteration in running text and carry the pun’s force only in a footnote, never coin a permanent standing pejorative proper name in the main text.
Low Risk Terms
False Balances
Approved rendering: 诡诈的天平
Transliteration: guǐzhà de tiānpíng
Doctrine: Economic Injustice as a Symptom of Covenant Unfaithfulness
Original: מֹאזְנֵי מִרְמָה
Category: Sin
New term (12:7-8). Standard commercial-ethics vocabulary linking economic dishonesty to covenant unfaithfulness; low collision risk, though the doctrinal link to idolatry’s heart-corruption should be made explicit in teaching, not assumed from the vocabulary alone.
Threshing Floor
Approved rendering: 禾场
Transliteration: héchǎng
Doctrine: Exodus Typology / Covenant Blessing and Its Loss
Original: גֹּרֶן
Category: Imagery
New term (9:1-2). Standard agricultural vocabulary; low collision risk. Loss of this harvest-processing site in exile pictures the complete removal of covenant blessing, reversing the fertility-blessings Israel wrongly credited to Baal (cf. ch.2).
Hosea Name
Approved rendering: 何西阿
Transliteration: Héxī’ā
Doctrine: Redemption from Death / Salvation (name-resonance)
Original: הוֹשֵׁעַ
Category: Proper Noun
New term (1:1, title). The prophet’s own name means ‘salvation’/‘he saves,’ resonating with the baseline’s Critical term 救恩; worth a brief teaching note on the structural irony that a book largely of harsh judgment carries a name anticipating ultimate rescue.
Gomer
Approved rendering: 歌篾
Transliteration: Gēmiè
Doctrine: Prophetic Sign-Act / Hosea’s Redemption of Gomer as a Picture of Costly Grace
Original: גֹּמֶר
Category: Proper Noun
New term (1:3). Standard transliteration; grounds the marriage metaphor in a real historical marriage rather than pure allegory. Distinguish her ch.3 literal purchase-price redemption from the ch.2 betrothal-covenant image — related but distinct pictures of grace.
Ephraim
Approved rendering: 以法莲
Transliteration: Yǐfǎlián
Doctrine: The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People (general narrative)
Original: אֶפְרַיִם
Category: Proper Noun
New term for this curriculum (pervasive, chs. 4-14). Note for teaching: ‘Ephraim’ functions as the covenant-people’s name specifically in its unfaithful, apostate character throughout the book — the dominant northern tribe standing by metonymy for the whole northern kingdom.
Assyria
Approved rendering: 亚述
Transliteration: Yàshù
Doctrine: Judgment and Compassion Held Together (historical judgment agent)
Original: אַשּׁוּר
Category: Proper Noun
New term for this curriculum. Standard historical-geographic proper noun; the imperial power that conquered and exiled the northern kingdom in 722 BC.
Jacob
Approved rendering: 雅各
Transliteration: Yǎgè
Doctrine: Jacob’s History as Moral Precedent and Warning
Original: יַעֲקֹב
Category: Proper Noun
New term for this curriculum (12:2-4, 12). Standard proper-name transliteration, ties the nation’s present unfaithfulness to its patriarchal origins; requires OT narrative background (Genesis 25-32) for full comprehension.
