Core Glossary

Core Glossary: Zephaniah (English–Hebrew–Mandarin)

Curriculum: Zephaniah Destination language: Mandarin Chinese (Simplified script, CUV/和合本 Shen edition register) Source of authority: Baseline Romans translation_memory.json (reused exactly where terms recur); new entries proposed below follow the same risk-tier methodology Coverage: Terms cited from every chapter (1, 2, 3) of Zephaniah, including the core passage (3:14–17)

How to read this table

  • Baseline Status = Reused: term/rendering is taken verbatim from the baseline Romans translation_memory.json; no deviation permitted.
  • Baseline Status = New: term is not present in the baseline; a Mandarin rendering is proposed here following the same doctrinal-collision-avoidance methodology.
  • Risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the baseline’s doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions exactly.
#English TermHebrew (Original)TransliterationMandarinPinyinDoctrineRiskBaseline StatusNotes
1LORD / YHWHיהוהYHWH耶和华YēhéhuáDay of the LORD; God’s Joyful LoveCriticalNewThe Tetragrammaton, distinct from the generic “God” (אֱלֹהִים/θεός, cf. baseline 神). Following the CUV “Shen edition” convention referenced in the baseline (神 for Elohim/theos), the personal covenant name is rendered 耶和华 throughout, per standard CUV practice. NEVER conflate with 神 alone; when both occur together (e.g. 3:17 יְהוָה אֱלֹהַיִךְ), render both: 耶和华你的神.
2God (generic)אֱלֹהִים / אֱלֹהַיִךְElohim / ElohayikhShénAllCriticalReusedExact reuse of baseline “god” entry. Monotheism must be made explicit in context, per baseline note.
3Day of the LORDיוֹם יהוהyôm YHWH耶和华的日子Yēhéhuá de rìziDay of the LORD as Judgment and RestorationCriticalNewCentral organizing concept of the book. Standard CUV rendering. Must be recognizable across ch.1 (judgment sense) and 3:14-17 (restoration sense) as the same Day, not two unrelated events; cross-reference required in teaching material.
4that day (eschatological)בַּיּוֹם הַהוּאbayyôm hahûʾ到那日dào nà rìDay of the LORDHighNewFormulaic shorthand for “the Day of the LORD”; must be flagged as referring back to term #3, not a generic “someday.”
5Zion (daughter of)בַּת־צִיּוֹןbat-Tsiyyôn锡安Xī’ānRemnant; God’s Joyful LoveLowNewStandard CUV proper-name/personification convention.
6Jerusalem (daughter of)בַּת־יְרוּשָׁלַםִbat-Yerûšālaim耶路撒冷YēlùsālěngRemnant; God’s Joyful LoveLowNewStandard CUV proper name; corporate personification parallel to Zion.
7sing for joyרָנִּי / רִנָּהrānnî / rinnâ歌唱 / 欢呼歌唱gēchàngGod’s Joyful LoveMediumNewRoot-echoed in both 3:14 (command to Zion) and 3:17 (God’s own joy); Mandarin rendering should preserve this inclusio through parallel vocabulary.
8shout (for joy / battle)הָרִיעוּhārîʿû欢呼huānhūDay of the LORD; God’s Joyful LoveMediumNewSame root used for the “day of trumpet” alarm in 1:16; ironic reversal from terror-shout to joy-shout across the book.
9rejoiceשִׂמְחִי / בְּשִׂמְחָהśimḥî / bəśimḥâ欢喜huānxǐGod’s Joyful LoveLowNewStandard joy vocabulary.
10exultעָלְזִי / עַלִּיזֵיʿālzî / ʿallîzê欢腾 (positive, 3:14) / 矜夸高傲 (negative, 3:11)huānténg / jīnkuā gāo’àoGod’s Joyful Love; Judgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewSame Hebrew root (עלז) used positively (legitimate God-directed exultation, 3:14) and negatively (illegitimate pride to be removed, 3:11). Translator must preserve the deliberate irony; do not let the two Mandarin renderings appear semantically unrelated in teaching materials.
11mighty one / warriorגִּבּוֹרgibbôr大能者dà néng zhěGod’s Joyful Love; Day of the LORDHighNewRecommend deriving from baseline “power_of_god” (神的大能) rather than a purely martial-hero term (勇士), to preserve transcendent divine power rather than human-hero connotation.
12he will saveיוֹשִׁיעַ / הוֹשַׁעְתִּיyôšîaʿ / hôshaʿtî拯救zhěngjiùDay of the LORD; God’s Joyful Love; RemnantCriticalNew (verb form of reused concept)Root ישע underlies the name “Jesus” (Yeshua/Ἰησοῦς/耶稣); verb form paired with baseline noun 救恩 (jiùēn, “salvation”). NEVER render with 解脱 or 超度, per baseline salvation prohibition — this concern applies with equal force to the OT verb form.
13he will rejoice over you / exult over youיָשִׂישׁ עָלַיִךְ / יָגִיל עָלַיִךְyāśîś ʿālayiḵ / yāḡîl ʿālayiḵ因你欢欣喜乐 / 因你欢呼歌唱yīn nǐ huānxīn xǐlèGod’s Joyful LoveHighNewGod as subject, people as object of joy — a relational direction with no folk-religious parallel (contrast with generic 福/平安 blessing-wish language). This is the doctrinal center-term of “God’s Joyful Love for His People.”
14he will quiet you in his loveיַחֲרִישׁ בְּאַהֲבָתוֹyaḥărîš bəʾahăḇāṯô他必以他的爱使你安静tā bì yǐ tā de ài shǐ nǐ ānjìngGod’s Joyful LoveHighNewTextually/interpretively debated (silence vs. quieting); flag for translator’s footnote presenting both readings.
15loveאַהֲבָהʾahăḇâàiGod’s Joyful LoveMediumNewCovenant love, not romantic love (爱情); should be read alongside baseline’s relational vocabulary (阿爸/父) without conflation.
16fear notאַל־תִּירְאִי / אַל־תִירְאִי רָעʾal-tîrʾî不要惧怕bùyào jùpàDay of the LORD; God’s Joyful LoveLowNewStandard OT salvation-oracle formula.

18in your midstבְּקִרְבֵּךְ / בְּקִרְבָּהּbəqirbēḫ / bəqirbâh在你中间zài nǐ zhōngjiānDay of the LORD; God’s Joyful Love; RemnantMediumNewRepeated relational-presence phrase (3:5, 3:15, 3:17); dwelling presence, not passive proximity.
19sweep away / utterly destroyאָסֹף אָסִיףʾāsōp̄ ʾāsîp̄除灭chúmièJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewCosmic-scope hyperbolic judgment language, ch.1.

21idolatrous priestsהַכְּמָרִיםhak-kəmārîm基玛林JīmǎlínJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyMediumNewDistinct from ordinary כֹּהֲנִים (priests); a specific syncretistic office.

25be silent (before the LORD)הַסhas静默无声jìngmò wúshēngDay of the LORDMediumNewLiturgical silence-formula before judgment.
26day of the LORD’s sacrificeזֶבַח יהוהzeḇaḥ YHWH耶和华献祭的日子Yēhéhuá xiànjì de rìziDay of the LORD; Judgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewJudgment-as-sacrificial-banquet metaphor; not ordinary worship instruction.
27punish / visit judgmentפָּקַדpāqad追讨 / 惩罚zhuī tǎoJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyMediumNewLegal/royal punitive-visitation term.
28those settled on their dregs (complacency)הַקֹּפְאִים עַל־שִׁמְרֵיהֶםhaq-qōp̄əʾîm ʿal shimrêhem心里安逸自足的人xīnlǐ ānyì zìzú de rénJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewCentral complacency term of the book — theological indifference/practical atheism, not mere laziness.
29”the LORD will do neither good nor harm”לֹא־יֵיטִיב יהוה וְלֹא יָרֵעַlōʾ-yêṭîḇ YHWH wə-lōʾ yārēaʿ耶和华必不降福,也不降祸Yēhéhuá bì bù jiàng fú, yě bù jiàng huòJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewHighest cultural-collision risk term in the book. Uses 福/祸 (fortune/calamity), the exact vocabulary of Chinese folk divination (求福避祸). Must be taught as the condemned false creed of complacent unbelief, not modeled devotional language; cross-reference baseline’s 福 root caution under “gospel.”
30wrath (day of)עֶבְרָהʿeḇrâ忿怒的日子fènnù de rìziDay of the LORDHighNewIntensified, overflowing wrath; part of the 1:15 “day of…” cascade.
31jealousy / zeal (of God)קִנְאָהqinʾâ忌邪jìxiéJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewReuses standard CUV term for divine jealousy (cf. Exodus 20:5); distinct from petty human jealousy 嫉妒.
32silver and gold (cannot deliver)כֶּסֶף וְזָהָבkesep̄ wə-zāhāḇ金银不能救jīnyín bùnéng jiùJudgment on Idolatry and Complacency; Grace (cf. baseline)MediumNewWealth-as-false-security; conceptually parallel to baseline’s merit/功德 concern.

34burning anger of the LORDחֲרוֹן אַף־יהוהḥărôn ʾap̄-YHWH耶和华的烈怒Yēhéhuá de liènùDay of the LORDHighNewStandard intensive-anger idiom.
35humble / humilityעַנְוֵי הָאָרֶץ / עֲנָוָהʿanwê hāʾāreṣ / ʿănāwâ谦卑qiānbēiThe Remnant of IsraelHighNewDefining internal quality of the surviving remnant; theological dependence on God, not mere social lowliness.
36righteousnessצֶדֶק / צַדִּיקṣeḏeq / ṣaddîq义 / 公义yì / gōngyìThe Remnant of Israel; Day of the LORDCriticalReused (concept) / New (adjectival “公义” nuance)Baseline 义 reused exactly for the noun concept (2:3, “seek righteousness”). For the adjectival/character sense (“YHWH is righteous in her midst,” 3:5), 公义 (gōngyì) is recommended to convey righteous conduct/character, but the same Confucian Five-Constant-Virtues collision risk from the baseline applies to both forms without exception.
37perhaps you will be shelteredאוּלַי תִּסָּתְרוּʾûlay tissāṯərû或者可以蔽藏huòzhě kěyǐ bìcángThe Remnant of IsraelMediumNewTentative hope, not guaranteed transactional escape.
38remnant (of the house of Judah)שְׁאֵרִית בֵּית יְהוּדָהšəʾērîṯ bêṯ Yəhûḏâ犹大家的余民Yóudà jiā de yúmínThe Remnant of IsraelHighNewFirst occurrence of the book’s central remnant term family (余民); establishes consistency for term #47 below.
39pride / arroganceגַּאֲוָהgaʾăwâ骄傲jiāo’àoJudgment on Idolatry and Complacency; Remnant (antonym)MediumNewStructural opposite of humility (#35); charged against Moab (ch.2) and Jerusalem’s proud ones (3:11).
40awesome / terribleנוֹרָאnôrāʾ可畏kěwèiDay of the LORDMediumNewJudgment extended universally to all nations, not Judah alone.
41Woe!הוֹיhôy祸哉huòzāiJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyMediumNewStandard prophetic judgment-oracle interjection.
42rebellious and defiledמֹרְאָה וְנִגְאָלָהmôrʾâ wə-nigʾālâ悖逆污秽的bèinì wūhuì deJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewApplied to Jerusalem itself; no civilizational exemption from accountability.
43trust (in the LORD)בָּטַחbāṭaḥ信靠xìnkàoThe Remnant of Israel; Faith (cf. baseline)HighNewRelated to, but distinct in register from, baseline “faith” (信心); trust-as-reliance rather than belief-content.
44discipline / correctionמוּסָרmûsār管教 / 教训guǎnjiàoJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyMediumNewRefused correction as root of civic/religious corruption.
45profaned the holy [place]חִלְּלוּ־קֹדֶשׁḥillərû qōḏesh污秽圣所wūhuì shèngsuǒJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighNewDirect collision-adjacent to baseline “holy” (圣洁); priesthood violating its own set-apart mandate.
46done violence to the lawחָמְסוּ תוֹרָהḥāməsû tôrâ强解律法qiángjiě lǜfǎJudgment on Idolatry and ComplacencyHighReused (律法 exactly from baseline)Must not be confused with 礼 (Confucian ritual propriety) or 法律 (secular law), per baseline “law” note.
47remnant of Israelשְׁאָר יִשְׂרָאֵלshəʾār Yiśrāʾēl以色列的余民Yǐsèliè de yúmínThe Remnant of IsraelCriticalNewThe book’s central, doctrinally load-bearing remnant term; must be rendered consistently with term #38 (余民); never diluted to a generic “survivors” (幸存者) that would lose the covenant-election dimension. Directly precedes and identifies the addressee of the core passage (3:14-17).
48humble and lowly peopleעַם עָנִי וָדָלʿam ʿānî wā-ḏāl困苦贫寒的百姓kùnkǔ pínhán de bǎixìngThe Remnant of IsraelHighNewQualitative (not ethnic/status) definition of the remnant.
49take refuge in the name of the LORDחָסוּ בְּשֵׁם יהוהḥāsû bə-shēm YHWH投靠耶和华的名tóukào Yēhéhuá de míngThe Remnant of IsraelHighNewRefuge-vocabulary complementing 信靠 (#43).

53praise and a nameתְּהִלָּה וְשֵׁםtəhillâ wə-shēm名声和称赞míngshēng hé chēngzànThe Remnant of IsraelLowNewCorporate honor restored by God, reversing prior shame.
54restore fortunes / return from captivityשׁוּב שְׁבוּתshûḇ shəḇûṯ使你们被掳的归回shǐ nǐmen bèi lǔ de guīhuíDay of the LORD as Judgment and RestorationHighNewClosing restoration idiom; ties the book’s end to its opening exile-level judgment threat.
55pure speech / pure lipsשָׂפָה בְרוּרָהśāp̄â bərûrâ清洁的言语qīngjié de yányǔDay of the LORD; RemnantHighNewGod-given, not humanly achieved; parallels baseline’s “Universal Scope of the Gospel” (Romans 10:13 call-on-the-name language).
56call on the name of the LORDקָרָא בְשֵׁם יהוהqārāʾ bə-shēm YHWH求告耶和华的名qiúgào Yēhéhuá de míngDay of the LORD; Universal Scope (cf. baseline)HighNewSame idiom underlying Romans 10:13, already Critical/High in the baseline registry (“universal_scope_of_gospel”).
57with one accordשְׁכֶם אֶחָדshəḵem ʾeḥāḏ同心合意tóngxīn héyìDay of the LORD (restoration)MediumNewUnified true worship among restored/gathered peoples.

Cross-references to baseline Romans terms reused without modification

The following terms recur in Zephaniah and MUST use the exact baseline Mandarin rendering with no deviation:

Baseline TermMandarinZephaniah Occurrence(s)
godThroughout, esp. 3:17 (in combination with 耶和华)
righteousness2:3 (“seek righteousness”)
law律法3:4 (“done violence to the law”)
holy (concept root)圣洁 / 圣3:4 (“profaned the holy”), 3:11 (“my holy mountain”)
sin (conceptually, ch.1 judgment context)Implied throughout 1:17 (“they have sinned against the LORD”) — not a separate coined term
gentiles / nations (in universal-judgment/worship contexts)外邦人 (where the Jew/non-Jew covenant distinction is in view); 列国/万民 (where “the nations” as political entities are in view, e.g., 2:1-15 oracles, 3:8-9)2:1-15, 3:6-9

Highest-priority translation risk flags for Phase 2

  1. 福/祸 collision (term #29) — the single highest cultural-syncretism risk in the book; requires mandatory theologian + native-speaker joint review on every occurrence.
  2. 耶和华 vs. 神 distinction (term #1 vs #2) — must be maintained with absolute consistency; conflating them erases the personal-name/covenant-relationship dimension central to Zephaniah’s rhetoric.
  3. 余民 consistency (terms #38, #47) — the remnant term family must never vary across chapters 2 and 3; this is the doctrinal noun that identifies the addressee of the core passage’s joy.
  4. 义/公义 Confucian-virtue collision (term #36) — inherited directly from the baseline; Zephaniah 2:3’s “seek righteousness, seek humility” is textually at high risk of being read as an endorsement of Confucian self-cultivation rather than covenant-faithfulness-in-response-to-grace.
  5. עלז root irony (term #10) — the positive/negative use of the same root across 3:11 and 3:14 is a deliberate literary device; losing this in Mandarin flattens a key rhetorical turn of the book’s climax.

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷

Inherited from Romans package. CRITICAL in Zephaniah specifically because the book catalogues numerous named rival deities (Baal, Milcom, host of heaven) worshipped alongside 神; every occurrence of 神 in a judgment-on-idolatry passage must make monotheism and exclusivity explicit rather than assume the reader supplies it, since 神 is also the common noun for any folk deity/spirit.

Grace

Approved rendering: 恩典
Transliteration: ēndiǎn
Doctrine: The Futility of Wealth and Works to Avert Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 功德, 造化, 福气, 阴德

Inherited from Romans package. Conceptually underlies Zephaniah’s teaching that silver and gold (1:18) and human effort cannot avert judgment; the remnant is preserved by God’s initiative, not merit-accounting. NEVER use 功德/阴德, per baseline.

Salvation

Approved rendering: 救恩
Transliteration: jiùēn
Doctrine: Salvation as God’s Historical, Relational Act
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度, 得道

Inherited from Romans package. Paired conceptually with Zephaniah’s verb 拯救 (term ‘he_will_save’ below), which shares the same root as the name Jesus/Yeshua. NEVER 解脱 or 超度 in either noun or verb form.

Righteousness

Approved rendering:
Transliteration:
Doctrine: Seeking Covenant Righteousness Before Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 道德, 善行

Inherited from Romans package. In Zephaniah 2:3 (‘seek righteousness’), the Confucian Five Constant Virtues collision risk is ELEVATED beyond the Romans baseline usage because the imperative grammar (‘seek’) more naturally reads as a self-cultivation exhortation than Romans’ predominantly forensic uses. Every occurrence in Zephaniah requires a distinguishing note.

Messiah

Approved rendering: 基督
Transliteration: Jīdū
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 弥勒, 救世主式泛称

Inherited from Romans package. Zephaniah does not use this term directly, but 3:15’s ‘King of Israel’ and 3:17’s ‘mighty one who will save’ anticipate NT christological titles; teaching material connecting Zephaniah to the NT must apply the baseline’s Critical caution against conflating Christ with 弥勒 (Maitreya), since Zephaniah’s restoration oracles could otherwise be misread through a Chinese millenarian future-savior lens.

Yhwh

Approved rendering: 耶和华
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 神 (alone, substituting for the covenant name), 上帝
Original: יהוה
Category: God

The Tetragrammaton, God’s personal covenant name, kept strictly distinct from the generic 神 (Elohim) per CUV ‘Shen edition’ convention. When both occur together (3:17, 耶和华你的神), render both elements; never drop either half, since doing so erases the personal, relational, promise-keeping identity grounding the book’s entire judgment-to-restoration argument.

Day Of The Lord

Approved rendering: 耶和华的日子
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá de rìzi
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 末世, 天命所定的日子
Original: יוֹם יהוה
Category: Day of the Lord

The book’s central organizing concept, spanning both wrath (ch.1) and joyful restoration (3:14-17) as ONE event with two movements. Must never be confused with impersonal cyclical judgment concepts (天命/治乱循环) or with a generic secular/Buddhist-Daoist 末世 (age-ending) lacking a personal covenant-keeping actor. Cross-reference required between ch.1 and 3:16 in all teaching material.

Complacency Settled On Dregs

Approved rendering: 心里安逸自足的人
Transliteration: xīnlǐ ānyì zìzú de rén
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Rejected alternatives: 懒惰的人, 消极的人
Original: הַקֹּפְאִים עַל־שִׁמְרֵיהֶם
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

The book’s central diagnostic term for complacency (1:12), a wine-lees metaphor with no Chinese cultural equivalent. Names practical atheism disguised as religious normalcy, not mere laziness; requires a doctrinal gloss on first occurrence in every teaching context.

Neither Good Nor Harm

Approved rendering: 耶和华必不降福,也不降祸
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá bì bù jiàng fú, yě bù jiàng huò
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Rejected alternatives: 耶和华不理会人的善恶 (过度意译)
Original: לֹא־יֵיטִיב יהוה וְלֹא יָרֵעַ
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

SINGLE HIGHEST CULTURAL-COLLISION RISK IN THE BOOK. Uses 福/祸, the exact vocabulary pair of Chinese folk divination (求福避祸). Every occurrence requires a mandatory teaching note identifying this as the condemned, quoted creed of the complacent — never modeled devotional language. Never excerpt as a standalone line without its surrounding indictment.

Righteousness Sought

Approved rendering:
Transliteration:
Doctrine: Seeking Covenant Righteousness Before Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 道德, 善行
Original: צֶדֶק
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Exact reuse of the baseline righteousness entry as it appears in Zephaniah 2:3’s imperative ‘seek righteousness.’ The Confucian Five-Constant-Virtues collision risk is elevated here because the active human ‘seek’ grammar reads more naturally as self-cultivation instruction than Romans’ predominantly forensic uses of the same root.

Righteous In Her Midst

Approved rendering: 公义
Transliteration: gōngyì
Doctrine: Seeking Covenant Righteousness Before Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 义 (单独使用于此语境易与儒家五常混淆)
Original: צַדִּיק
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Describes YHWH’s own righteous character in action (3:5), contrasted with corrupt leaders’ injustice. Chosen over the bare noun 义 to convey character/conduct, but carries the identical Confucian-collision risk and requires the same distinguishing note.

Remnant Of Israel

Approved rendering: 以色列的余民
Transliteration: Yǐsèliè de yúmín
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 幸存者, 遗民 (易生政治遗民联想)
Original: שְׁאָר יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: The Remnant of Israel

The book’s central, doctrinally load-bearing remnant term (3:12-13), directly identifying the addressee of the core passage’s joy (3:14-17). Must never be diluted to 幸存者 (the unmarked, far more common Mandarin word for ‘survivor’), which would strip the covenant-election dimension entirely.

He Will Save

Approved rendering: 拯救
Transliteration: zhěngjiù
Doctrine: Salvation as God’s Historical, Relational Act
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度
Original: יָשַׁע (יוֹשִׁיעַ / הוֹשַׁעְתִּי)
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Verb form (3:17, 3:19) of the same root underlying the name Jesus/Yeshua. Paired conceptually with baseline noun 救恩. NEVER 解脱 (Buddhist liberation from samsara) or 超度 (a posthumous rite for the dead) — this is God’s saving action toward the living remnant in history.

High Risk Terms

Faith

Approved rendering: 信心
Transliteration: xìnxīn
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 虔诚, 迷信, 信仰

Inherited from Romans package. Related to, but distinct in register from, Zephaniah’s new term 信靠 (trust/reliance, term ‘trust_rely_on_the_lord’ below); teach the two together as complementary rather than interchangeable.

Holy

Approved rendering: 圣洁
Transliteration: shèngjié
Doctrine: Divine Jealousy and the Demand for Exclusive Worship
Rejected alternatives: 清净, 圣人般的

Inherited from Romans package. Used in Zephaniah 3:4 (profaned the holy) and 3:11 (my holy mountain); the priesthood’s own violation of what it is charged to guard is a Zephaniah-specific twist requiring a teaching note that covenant office confers no automatic immunity from corruption.

Law

Approved rendering: 律法
Transliteration: lǜfǎ
Doctrine: Divine Jealousy and the Demand for Exclusive Worship
Rejected alternatives: 礼, 道德规范, 法律

Inherited from Romans package. Used in Zephaniah 3:4 (‘done violence to the law’); never equate with 礼 (Confucian ritual propriety) or 法律 (secular civil law), per baseline note.

Sin

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: zuì
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Rejected alternatives: 报应, 罪犯式的罪

Inherited from Romans package. Implied throughout Zephaniah 1 and explicit at 1:17 (‘because they have sinned against the LORD’); distinguish from karmic retribution (报应) affecting fortune/lineage.

Power Of God

Approved rendering: 神的大能
Transliteration: Shén de dà néng
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 气, 法力

Inherited from Romans package. Serves as the doctrinal basis for the new Zephaniah term 大能者 (‘mighty one,’ 3:17), deliberately chosen over the martial-hero term 勇士 to preserve YHWH’s transcendent, not merely heroic, power.

Covenant

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: yuē
Doctrine: Syncretism and Divided Covenant Loyalty
Rejected alternatives: 合同, 契约

Inherited from Romans package. Underlies Zephaniah’s entire argument: the sin condemned throughout is covenant betrayal (divided loyalty, complacent indifference to covenant obligations), not a commercial contract violation. Retain the relational, divinely-initiated sense per baseline note.

Election

Approved rendering: 拣选
Transliteration: jiǎnxuǎn
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 天命, 命运, 缘分

Inherited from Romans package. The remnant of Israel (余民) is a personally, graciously chosen preserved people, not survivors of impersonal fate (命运) or a predestined-connection folk concept (缘分); this baseline forbidden list applies directly to how 余民 must be taught in Zephaniah.

Providence

Approved rendering: 神的护理
Transliteration: Shén de hùlǐ
Doctrine: Assurance Through God’s Dwelling Presence
Rejected alternatives: 天意, 命运

Inherited from Romans package. Zephaniah’s Day of the LORD and assurance-of-presence doctrines are both vulnerable to being read through 天意 (‘heaven’s intention’), the same impersonal fatalistic phrase the baseline flags; God’s governance in Zephaniah is personal and purposive, grounded in covenant character, not an impersonal cosmic will.

Adoption

Approved rendering: 儿子的名分
Transliteration: érzi de míngfèn
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 过继, 收养

Inherited from Romans package. Cross-referenced in comparative theology: Zephaniah 3:17’s picture of God delighting in and singing over his people is read by the Protestant tradition as an early anticipation of the Father’s delight in his adopted children later unfolded in Romans 8. Teaching material drawing this connection should reuse this exact baseline term.

That Day

Approved rendering: 到那日
Transliteration: dào nà rì
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 有一天 (泛指未来)
Original: בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא
Category: Day of the Lord

Formulaic shorthand resuming ‘the Day of the LORD’ at 3:16. Risk of reading as a vague generic ‘someday’ without an explicit gloss connecting it back to the fixed compound 耶和华的日子.

Wrath Of The Day

Approved rendering: 忿怒的日子
Transliteration: fènnù de rìzi
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 天怒 (暗示无人称的宇宙之怒)
Original: עֶבְרָה
Category: Day of the Lord

Overflowing, uncontainable divine wrath (1:15 cascade). YHWH must remain the explicit grammatical subject; never allow an impersonal-agent construction to substitute, which would collapse this into fatalistic 天意-flavored resignation.

Burning Anger Of The Lord

Approved rendering: 耶和华的烈怒
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá de liènù
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 天意的怒气
Original: חֲרוֹן אַף־יהוה
Category: Day of the Lord

The kindled anger from which repentance may yet provide shelter (2:3). Must be read as personal, relational, justly provoked anger, not an impersonal cosmic force.

Day Of The Lords Sacrifice

Approved rendering: 耶和华献祭的日子
Transliteration: Yēhéhuá xiànjì de rìzi
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 普通献祭仪式的日子 (误读为常规敬拜)
Original: זֶבַח יהוה
Category: Day of the Lord

Judgment described as a sacrificial banquet in which the corrupt of Judah become the sacrificial victims (1:7-8), a shocking reversal. Must not read as ordinary temple worship instruction.

Sweep Away

Approved rendering: 除灭
Transliteration: chúmiè
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 清理, 除去 (过弱)
Original: אָסֹף אָסִיף
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Deliberately hyperbolic, cosmic-scope judgment language (1:2-3, merism of man/beast/birds/fish). Must retain totality and severity.

Baal

Approved rendering: 巴力
Transliteration: Bālì
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 偶像 (泛称)
Original: הַבַּעַל
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

The Canaanite storm/fertility god, YHWH’s chief historical rival deity (1:4). Must remain a transliterated proper name; generalizing to ‘偶像’ erases the exclusive-rival-claim dimension the text condemns, risking a reading of harmless religious pluralism given Chinese folk religion’s normative multi-deity coexistence.

Milcom

Approved rendering: 玛勒堪
Transliteration: Mǎlèkān
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 偶像 (泛称)
Original: מַלְכָּם / מִלְכֹּם
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

The national god of Ammon (1:5), invoked in dual-loyalty oath-swearing alongside YHWH. This is covenant-breaking syncretism, not benign pluralism, despite superficial resemblance to normal Chinese multi-deity devotional practice.

Turned Back From Following The Lord

Approved rendering: 转去不跟从耶和华的人
Transliteration: zhuǎn qù bù gēncóng Yēhéhuá de rén
Doctrine: Syncretism and Divided Covenant Loyalty
Rejected alternatives: 忘记耶和华的人 (过弱)
Original: הַנְּסוֹגִים מֵאַחֲרֵי יהוה
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Quiet, passive covenant defection (1:6), a category distinct from active Baal-worship. Must not be softened into mere forgetting; this is accountable covenant betrayal.

Rebellious And Defiled

Approved rendering: 悖逆污秽的
Transliteration: bèinì wūhuì de
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Rejected alternatives: 犯错的 (过弱)
Original: מֹרְאָה וְנִגְאָלָה
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Charged against Jerusalem itself (3:1) — the covenant city receives the same charge leveled against pagan nations, with no civilizational exemption. Resist any Hua-Yi-style softening that would treat Judah’s judgment as categorically milder.

Profaned The Holy

Approved rendering: 污秽圣所
Transliteration: wūhuì shèngsuǒ
Doctrine: Divine Jealousy and the Demand for Exclusive Worship
Rejected alternatives: 弄脏圣地 (过于字面)
Original: חִלְּלוּ־קֹדֶשׁ
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Desecration of the sanctuary by the very priesthood entrusted to guard its holiness (3:4). Reuses the 圣 root of the baseline 圣洁 entry; must not imply covenant office is inherently immune to abuse.

Done Violence To The Law

Approved rendering: 强解律法
Transliteration: qiángjiě lǜfǎ
Doctrine: Divine Jealousy and the Demand for Exclusive Worship
Rejected alternatives: 违反法律 (误用法律), 违背礼 (与儒家礼混淆)
Original: חָמְסוּ תוֹרָה
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Active, violent wresting of the Mosaic law by covenant leaders (3:4), reusing 律法 exactly from the baseline law entry. This is twisting, not merely disregarding, the law.

Divine Jealousy Zeal

Approved rendering: 忌邪
Transliteration: jìxié
Doctrine: Divine Jealousy and the Demand for Exclusive Worship
Rejected alternatives: 嫉妒 (人的负面情绪)
Original: קִנְאָה
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Exclusive covenant zeal grounding YHWH’s judgment (1:18, 3:8), reusing the standard CUV term for divine jealousy (cf. Exodus 20:5). Must be distinguished from petty human jealousy 嫉妒.

Humility

Approved rendering: 谦卑
Transliteration: qiānbēi
Doctrine: Humility as the Defining Mark of the Remnant
Rejected alternatives: 谦虚
Original: עֲנָוָה / עַנְוֵי הָאָרֶץ
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Theological dependence on God, sought together with righteousness (2:3) and defining the remnant’s character (3:12). NEVER use 谦虚, the far more common Mandarin word, which carries a Confucian self-cultivated-virtue connotation (an achieved social disposition), reframing dependence-on-grace as an earned qualification.

Remnant Of The House Of Judah

Approved rendering: 犹大家的余民
Transliteration: Yóudà jiā de yúmín
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 幸存者
Original: שְׁאֵרִית בֵּית יְהוּדָה
Category: The Remnant of Israel

First explicit remnant term in the book (2:7). Establishes 余民 as the standard rendering that must recur with total consistency through the book’s climactic use at 3:12-13.

Humble And Lowly People

Approved rendering: 困苦贫寒的百姓
Transliteration: kùnkǔ pínhán de bǎixìng
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 穷人 (过窄,仅经济含义)
Original: עַם עָנִי וָדָל
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Qualitative, not ethnic/socio-economic, definition of the remnant (3:12) — a posture of dependence on God that could describe a person of any social station.

Trust Rely On The Lord

Approved rendering: 信靠
Transliteration: xìnkào
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 迷信, 盲目相信
Original: בָּטַח
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Reliance/confidence placed specifically in YHWH (3:2), the failure of which is charged against Jerusalem’s leadership. Related to, but distinct in register from, baseline 信心 (belief-content) — this is trust-as-reliance on a person.

Take Refuge In The Name

Approved rendering: 投靠耶和华的名
Transliteration: tóukào Yēhéhuá de míng
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: 求签, 问卜
Original: חָסוּ בְּשֵׁם יהוה
Category: The Remnant of Israel

The remnant’s defining posture of seeking shelter in YHWH’s name (3:12); complementary refuge-vocabulary to 信靠. Must not resemble a generic amulet-style wish for protection.

Restore Fortunes

Approved rendering: 使你们被掳的归回
Transliteration: shǐ nǐmen bèi lǔ de guīhuí
Doctrine: Reversal of Shame and Restoration from Exile
Rejected alternatives: 恢复命运 (误引入命运论)
Original: שׁוּב שְׁבוּת
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Fixed prophetic idiom (3:20) for reversing a nation’s fortunes; ties the book’s closing promise back to its opening exile-level judgment threat. Standardize this exact paraphrase across the wider prophetic curriculum for cross-book consistency.

Exult Positive

Approved rendering: 欢腾
Transliteration: huānténg
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 得意 (含负面自满意味)
Original: עָלְזִי
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Legitimate, God-directed exultation commanded of Zion (3:14) — the SAME Hebrew root condemned negatively at 3:11. Must be rendered from a semantic field visibly related to the negative rendering (矜夸高傲的人) so the deliberate literary reversal remains teachable.

Exult Negative Pride

Approved rendering: 矜夸高傲的人
Transliteration: jīnkuā gāo’ào de rén
Doctrine: Humility as the Defining Mark of the Remnant
Rejected alternatives: 骄傲的人 (与欢腾在词根上失去关联)
Original: עַלִּיזֵי גַּאֲוָתֵךְ
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Illegitimate self-exultant pride removed before restoration (3:11), sharing the Hebrew root with the positive עָלְזִי of 3:14. The two Mandarin renderings must remain visibly related in teaching material.

Mighty One

Approved rendering: 大能者
Transliteration: dà néng zhě
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 勇士
Original: גִּבּוֹר
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Applied to YHWH himself as the one who actively saves (3:17). Deliberately derived from baseline 神的大能 rather than the martial-hero term 勇士, to preserve transcendent divine power rather than a human-hero register.

He Will Rejoice Over You

Approved rendering: 因你欢欣喜乐
Transliteration: yīn nǐ huānxīn xǐlè
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 求你赐福 (误将方向倒转)
Original: יָשִׂישׂ עָלַיִךְ בְּשִׂמְחָה
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

God’s own joyful delight directed toward his people (3:17) — the doctrinal center of the passage. The explicit ‘因你’ (over/because of you) object-marking construction must be retained in every rendering; its loss inverts the verse’s central, counter-intuitive relational direction.

He Will Quiet You In His Love

Approved rendering: 他必以他的爱使你安静
Transliteration: tā bì yǐ tā de ài shǐ nǐ ānjìng
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original: יַחֲרִישׁ בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Textually and interpretively debated (3:17): ‘he will quiet you’ vs. ‘he will be silent [in wonder].’ A translator’s footnote presenting both readings is required rather than silently resolving the ambiguity in the main text.

He Will Exult Over You With Singing

Approved rendering: 因你欢呼歌唱
Transliteration: yīn nǐ huānhū gēchàng
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original: יָגִיל עָלַיִךְ בְּרִנָּה
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

God’s own exultant celebration with singing over his people (3:17), forming a structural inclusio with the joy-command of 3:14. Reuse 歌唱/欢呼 vocabulary from the 3:14 entries so the inclusio is not lost.

In Your Midst

Approved rendering: 在你中间
Transliteration: zài nǐ zhōngjiān
Doctrine: Assurance Through God’s Dwelling Presence
Rejected alternatives: 住在庙里 (误导为地方神)
Original: בְּקִרְבֵּךְ / בְּקִרְבָּהּ
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

The single most theologically load-bearing phrase in the core passage (3:5, 3:15, 3:17). Highest priority translation ambiguity in the book: risks assimilation to the folk-religious schema of a resident city god or ancestral spirit dwelling in a shrine, rather than the personal, covenant-keeping presence of the one true God. Mandatory theologian review and explicit contrastive teaching note at every occurrence.

Pure Speech

Approved rendering: 清洁的言语
Transliteration: qīngjié de yányǔ
Doctrine: Restoration of Pure, Unified Worship Among the Nations
Original: שָׂפָה בְרוּרָה
Category: Restoration of Worship

God-given restored capacity for true worship among the nations (3:9); must be taught as a divine gift, not a human linguistic or moral achievement. Directly parallels the baseline’s Critical/High ‘universal_scope_of_gospel’ doctrine (Romans 10:13).

Call On The Name Of The Lord

Approved rendering: 求告耶和华的名
Transliteration: qiúgào Yēhéhuá de míng
Doctrine: Restoration of Pure, Unified Worship Among the Nations
Rejected alternatives: 求签, 问卜
Original: קָרָא בְשֵׁם יהוה
Category: Restoration of Worship

Standard OT worship-invocation formula, promised universally to the nations (3:9); the same idiom underlying Romans 10:13’s ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord.’ Cross-reference required in teaching material.

King Of Israel

Approved rendering: 以色列的王
Transliteration: Yǐsèliè de wáng
Doctrine: Assurance Through God’s Dwelling Presence
Rejected alternatives: 未来的大卫式君王 (误导为人类君王)
Original: מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: God

Applied to YHWH himself, not a human Davidic king (3:15). 王 defaults strongly to a dynastic-human-ruler register in Mandarin; mandatory teaching note that the referent is YHWH’s own kingship, especially given the book’s larger polemic against false confidence in human political power (Nineveh/Assyria, 2:13-15).

Medium Risk Terms

Gentiles

Approved rendering: 外邦人
Transliteration: wàibāngrén
Doctrine: Universal Judgment on the Nations
Rejected alternatives: 夷人, 外国人

Inherited from Romans package. Use where the Jew/non-Jew covenant distinction is specifically in view; for ‘the nations’ as political entities under judgment oracles (ch.2, 3:8), see new term ‘nations_kingdoms’ (列国/万民) below. NEVER 夷人.

Glory

Approved rendering: 荣耀
Transliteration: róngyào
Doctrine: Reversal of Shame and Restoration from Exile
Rejected alternatives: 面子, 光宗耀祖

Inherited from Romans package. Directly relevant to Zephaniah 3:19-20’s promise of ‘praise and a name’: the restored honor is God-given corporate honor, not clan/lineage honor achieved through filial effort (光宗耀祖), which remains a rejected alternative here as in Romans.

Prophecy

Approved rendering: 预言
Transliteration: yùyán
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 算卦, 占卜

Inherited from Romans package. Zephaniah’s oracles of judgment and restoration are God-inspired declarations, not divinatory prediction (占卜/算卦), a distinction of special relevance given the book’s polemic against astral-cult divination practices (host of heaven, 1:5).

Kingdom Of God

Approved rendering: 神的国
Transliteration: Shén de guó
Doctrine: Assurance Through God’s Dwelling Presence
Rejected alternatives: 天下, 王朝

Inherited from Romans package. Relevant background for Zephaniah 3:15’s ‘King of Israel’ applied to YHWH: the baseline’s caution against 天下 (a unified earthly realm under a legitimate ruler) and 王朝 (dynasty) applies directly to preventing a dynastic-political misreading of YHWH’s kingship in that verse.

Israel

Approved rendering: 以色列
Transliteration: Yǐsèliè
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel

Inherited from Romans package. Proper name; CUV established form. Central to Zephaniah’s climactic remnant term 以色列的余民 (3:12-13) and to ‘King of Israel’ (3:15).

Silence Before The Lord

Approved rendering: 静默无声
Transliteration: jìngmò wúshēng
Doctrine: The Day of the LORD as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: 静坐, 清净
Original: הַס
Category: Day of the Lord

Liturgical call to fearful silence before YHWH’s approaching judgment (1:7). Must be fenced against Daoist/Buddhist meditative or ritual-purity stillness (静坐, 清净); this is dread-before-a-Judge, not a technique for inner calm.

Awesome Terrible

Approved rendering: 可畏
Transliteration: kěwèi
Doctrine: Universal Judgment on the Nations
Rejected alternatives: 了不起 (误读为’令人钦佩’)
Original: נוֹרָא
Category: Day of the Lord

Describes YHWH’s judgment extended universally to all nations (2:11), not Judah alone. Must retain judicial terror, not generic ‘impressive.‘

Woe

Approved rendering: 祸哉
Transliteration: huòzāi
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Original: הוֹי
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Standard CUV prophetic funeral-lament/judgment-oracle interjection opening the accusation against Jerusalem itself (3:1). Marks a formal judgment-oracle, not an exclamation of ordinary misfortune.

Idolatrous Priests

Approved rendering: 基玛林
Transliteration: Jīmǎlín
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 祭司 (不加区分), 僧, 道士
Original: הַכְּמָרִים
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

A loanword (1:4) for syncretistic cultic functionaries, distinct from ordinary Israelite priests. Transliterate with gloss (祭拜巴力的祭司); avoid borrowing Buddhist/Daoist clergy vocabulary.

Host Of Heaven

Approved rendering: 天上的万象
Transliteration: tiānshàng de wànxiàng
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 占星 (过窄)
Original: צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Astral-cult worship (1:5). Distinct from Chinese astrology/fengshui practices; note the structural parallel without implying direct address to a specific Chinese practice.

Pride Arrogance

Approved rendering: 骄傲
Transliteration: jiāo’ào
Doctrine: Humility as the Defining Mark of the Remnant
Rejected alternatives: 自负
Original: גַּאֲוָה
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

The structural opposite of humility (谦卑); charged against Moab (2:10) and echoed of Jerusalem’s proud ones (3:11). Keep terminologically distinct so the humility/pride polarity remains visible.

Discipline Correction

Approved rendering: 管教
Transliteration: guǎnjiào
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Complacency
Rejected alternatives: 惩罚 (过窄)
Original: מוּסָר
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Jerusalem’s refusal to accept correction (3:2) is the root of the city’s corruption; retain the sense of corrective teaching, not punitive-only discipline.

Punish Visit

Approved rendering: 追讨
Transliteration: zhuī tǎo
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry
Rejected alternatives: 拜访 (字面误译)
Original: פָּקַד
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Legal/royal punitive-visitation term (1:8-9), exacting judgment on those claiming covenant privilege while practicing syncretism.

Silver And Gold Cannot Save

Approved rendering: 他们的金银不能救他们
Transliteration: tāmen de jīnyín bùnéng jiù tāmen
Doctrine: The Futility of Wealth and Works to Avert Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 功德不能救 (误引入佛教用语)
Original: כֶּסֶף וְזָהָב
Category: Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency

Material wealth as a false, failing source of security (1:18); conceptually parallels the baseline’s grace-versus-merit (功德) concern — wealth here is a merit-substitute that fails.

Gather Yourselves

Approved rendering: 你们应当聚集
Transliteration: nǐmen yīngdāng jùjí
Doctrine: Exhortation to Courage and Hope Amid Judgment
Original: הִתְקוֹשְּׁשׁוּ
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Summons to national self-examination opening the call to repentance (2:1); low collision risk.

Perhaps You Will Be Sheltered

Approved rendering: 或者可以蔽藏
Transliteration: huòzhě kěyǐ bìcáng
Doctrine: Exhortation to Courage and Hope Amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 一定会被保护 (过度确定)
Original: אוּלַי תִּסָּתְרוּ
Category: The Remnant of Israel

A hopeful, non-guaranteed possibility of protection (2:3). Must preserve the tentative ‘perhaps,’ resisting both presumption and despair.

Deceit

Approved rendering: 诡诈
Transliteration: guǐzhà
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: תַּרְמִית
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Negated of the purified remnant (3:13) — moral integrity as a mark of the community. Low collision risk.

Reproach Shame

Approved rendering: 羞辱
Transliteration: xiūrù
Doctrine: Reversal of Shame and Restoration from Exile
Rejected alternatives: 丢脸 (过于口语)
Original: חֶרְפָּה
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Covenantal/social disgrace, removed by God’s restorative action (3:18-19); restoration includes removal of shame, not merely legal pardon.

Outcast Driven Away

Approved rendering: 被赶散的
Transliteration: bèi gǎnsàn de
Doctrine: Reversal of Shame and Restoration from Exile
Original: נִדַּח
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Those scattered/exiled, gathered together with ‘the lame’ in the restoration promise (3:19).

Sing For Joy

Approved rendering: 歌唱
Transliteration: gēchàng
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 唱歌 (过于随意)
Original: רָנִּי / רִנָּה
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Root-echoed between the joy-command of 3:14 and God’s own joy in 3:17; render with deliberately parallel vocabulary across both verses to preserve the inclusio, since Mandarin has no single root-family paralleling Hebrew רנן/רנה.

Shout

Approved rendering: 欢呼
Transliteration: huānhū
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original: הָרִיעוּ
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Same root used for the terror-announcing ‘day of trumpet’ in 1:16, redirected to triumphant celebration in 3:14; a footnote connecting the two occurrences is recommended.

Love

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: ài
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: 爱情
Original: אַהֲבָה
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Covenant love grounding both God’s saving action and his rejoicing (3:17); must not be confused with the romantic-love register of 爱情, especially given the verse’s uniquely tender, spousal-adjacent imagery.

Let Not Your Hands Grow Weak

Approved rendering: 不要因胆怯而手软
Transliteration: bùyào yīn dǎnqiè ér shǒu ruǎn
Doctrine: Exhortation to Courage and Hope Amid Judgment
Rejected alternatives: 不要手无力 (字面误译)
Original: אַל־יִרְפּוּ יָדָיִךְ
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Idiom for loss of resolve/courage (3:16), encouraging active continued covenant faithfulness rather than passive resignation; must not be rendered as literal physical hand-weakness.

With One Accord

Approved rendering: 同心合意
Transliteration: tóngxīn héyì
Doctrine: Restoration of Pure, Unified Worship Among the Nations
Original: שְׁכֶם אֶחָד
Category: Restoration of Worship

Unity of purpose in restored worship among formerly scattered peoples (3:9); includes unified true worship, not merely individual salvation.

Nations Kingdoms

Approved rendering: 列国 / 万民
Transliteration: lièguó / wànmín
Doctrine: Universal Judgment on the Nations
Rejected alternatives: 夷人

Used where ‘the nations’ as political entities under judgment or restoration is in view (2:1-15, 3:8-9), as distinct from the baseline 外邦人 (covenant Jew/non-Jew distinction). NEVER 夷人, per the baseline Hua-Yi caution.

Low Risk Terms

Prophet

Approved rendering: 先知
Transliteration: xiānzhī
Doctrine: Divine Jealousy and the Demand for Exclusive Worship
Rejected alternatives: 算命先生

Inherited from Romans package. Relevant to Zephaniah 3:4’s indictment of Jerusalem’s ‘treacherous prophets’ (false prophets who betray their office) and to Zephaniah’s own identity as a true prophet (1:1); distinguish from 算命先生 (fortune-teller) in both the true and false prophet cases.

Praise And A Name

Approved rendering: 名声和称赞
Transliteration: míngshēng hé chēngzàn
Doctrine: Reversal of Shame and Restoration from Exile
Rejected alternatives: 光宗耀祖 (误导为家族荣耀)
Original: תְּהִלָּה וְשֵׁם
Category: The Remnant of Israel

Corporate honor restored by God’s own action (3:20), reversing prior shame; not self-promotion or lineage-honoring achievement.

Approved rendering: 欢喜
Transliteration: huānxǐ
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Original: שִׂמְחִי
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Gladness as the appropriate posture toward God’s saving action (3:14); standard joy vocabulary, low collision risk.

Fear Not

Transliteration: bùyào jùpà
Doctrine: Exhortation to Courage and Hope Amid Judgment
Original: אַל־תִּירְאִי
Category: God’s Joyful Love for His People

Standard OT salvation-oracle assurance formula (3:16), grounded in God’s presence and action, not circumstances.

Transliteration: Xī’ān
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel

Category: Remnant of Israel / Restoration

Personification of Jerusalem/the covenant community as a daughter (3:14); corporate identity language, not a literal woman. Standard prophetic-poetic convention.
