Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Gospel of John (English–Mandarin)
Purpose and Method
This analysis extends the Romans baseline Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json, 12_ai_translation_requirements.md) to the Gospel of John curriculum. It surveys the full text of John 1–21, with John 3:1–21 (the New Birth discourse) as the theological anchor, to identify:
- Where Mandarin already has an adequate, baseline-established term (reuse without modification).
- Where Mandarin has a term but it sits inside a crowded semantic neighborhood — a term already claimed by Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist, or folk-religious usage — requiring active theological “fencing” at every occurrence.
- Where Mandarin has no ready equivalent at all — a genuine vocabulary gap requiring coinage, compounding, or a mandatory explanatory teaching note.
- Where a transliteration-vs-paraphrase decision must be made and recorded.
All risk tiers (Critical/High/Medium/Low) follow the definitions fixed in the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json. No baseline term rendering is altered here; this document only extends coverage to John-specific vocabulary and doctrines.
Section 1 — Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
For each of the nine curriculum doctrines: the available Mandarin term(s), the specific weakness/collision risk in the destination culture, and the recommended translation strategy.
1.1 The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word) — Critical
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 道 (Logos, 1:1-3,14) | Central technical term of Daoist metaphysics — the impersonal, self-generating cosmic Way of the Dao De Jing. Chinese readers’ first association is philosophical/cosmological, not a personal divine agent. | Retain 道 (no viable alternative; 话语 is too weak, loses agency/pre-existence). Mandatory teaching note at every occurrence distinguishing the personal, self-existent divine Word from the impersonal Dao. Never let 道 stand alone without context in doctrinal teaching material. |
| 道成肉身 (Incarnation, baseline) | Same 道-collision risk compounded with 化身/下凡/转世 (bodhisattva manifestation / reincarnation) as false-friend alternatives. | Reuse baseline exactly; never substitute 化身/下凡/转世. |
| 独生子 (only begotten, 1:14,18; 3:16,18) | Collides with the modern demographic/legal category 独生子女 (“only child,” a term saturated with one-child-policy-era social meaning). | Retain 独生子 (CUV-established); mandatory translator’s note distinguishing the theological “unique, one-of-a-kind Son” sense from the demographic “only child” sense at every occurrence. |
| 与神平等 (equal with God, 5:18) | No prior collision — the text’s own gloss on the Sonship claim. Risk is understatement/softening in teaching paraphrase toward “an especially exalted man.” | Render plainly; never soften. |
| 荣耀 (glory, pre-existent, 17:5) | Baseline term; risk is collapse into 面子/光宗耀祖 (face/ancestral honor) if paraphrased loosely. | Reuse baseline exactly; link 17:5 explicitly back to 1:1-14 as a Pre-existence prooftext pair. |
| 我是 (absolute “I am,” 8:24,28,58; 13:19; 18:5-6,8) | Mandarin surface form carries no audible echo of the divine name (Exodus 3:14 LXX) the way the Greek does. | No lexical fix possible; mandatory cross-referencing teaching note connecting all six occurrences as a single christological thread. |
1.2 The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit — Critical
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 重生 (born again/from above, 3:3,7) | Common secular Mandarin for any dramatic life-turnaround (recovering from illness, “starting over”); also sits near the Buddhist rebirth-cycle semantic field even though it is not itself a Buddhist technical term. | Retain 重生 (CUV-established); mandatory compound gloss 从神而生/从上头生 to recover ἄνωθεν’s lost spatial “from above” sense; forbid 转世 (reincarnation) as an alternative or explanatory gloss. |
| 水和圣灵 (water and Spirit, 3:5) | Risk of assimilation to 符水 (Daoist talisman-water, blessed and drunk/sprinkled for healing or exorcism) — a magical-technique reading. | Teach explicitly as covenant-cleansing/baptismal imagery with the Spirit as the effective divine agent, not a ritual substance with inherent power. |
| 风 / 圣灵 (wind/Spirit wordplay, 3:8) | Mandarin has no single lexeme spanning both “wind” and “Spirit” (unlike Greek πνεῦμα or Hebrew רוּח); the pun is structurally unreproducible. | Mandatory explanatory teaching note; do not attempt a forced pun-substitute in the translated text itself — preserve CUV’s simile-bridge construction. |
| 神的儿女 (children of God, 1:12-13) | Distinct from Paul’s 儿子的名分 in form; risk of confusion with 过继 (clan-internal heir-transfer for ancestor-rite continuation). | Use 神的儿女 for John’s τέκνα θεοῦ phrasing; cross-reference baseline 儿子的名分 for Romans 8 continuity; explicitly reject 过继 framing. |
1.3 Eternal Life through Faith in Christ — Critical
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 永生 (eternal life) | Collides with the Daoist pursuit of physical immortality (长生不老) through alchemy, elixirs, or self-cultivation aimed at becoming 仙人/神仙. | Retain 永生 (only viable CUV term); mandatory teaching note every occurrence: present, relational, qualitative life with God received now by faith, never extended biological existence achieved by technique. Forbid 长生不老/长生不死 as glosses. |
| 生命 (zōē, life) | Everyday 命 alone denotes bare biological life or impersonal fate; 生命 is safer but can still be read as merely biological. | Use 生命 (not 命 alone) as the base term feeding into 永生; reinforce God-given qualitative sense at each key passage (1:4; 5:26; 6:33-58; 10:10; 11:25; 14:6). |
| 认识 (know, relational, 17:3) | Risk of a mere information-possession reading rather than personal relational knowledge. | Teach as personal, relational, experiential knowledge, paralleling the baseline’s caution on 信心 requiring a specific relational object. |
| 生命的粮 / 活水 (Bread of Life; Living Water) | Risk of assimilation to folk ritual food/water offerings to spirits, ancestors, or hungry ghosts, or Daoist immortality-spring motifs. | Teach as Christ’s own person received by faith, not a ritual substance. |
1.4 God’s Love for the World — High
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 爱 (agapē, 3:16; 13:34) | 爱 is broad, everyday vocabulary spanning romantic, familial, and patriotic love; no lexical marker distinguishes agapē from any other kind. | Every occurrence in a doctrinal passage (3:16 especially) requires an explicit teaching gloss: elevated, initiating, self-giving divine love not elicited by the object’s worthiness — tied to baseline 恩典 as its unmerited counterpart. |
| 世界 / 世人 (kosmos) | Same Mandarin word must carry both the positive sense (object of God’s saving love, 3:16) and the negative sense (hostile, God-opposing order, 15:18-19; 17:14) — sometimes within the same chapter. | Contextual glossing required at every occurrence; never flatten to a single univalent sense. Avoid 天下 (politically/dynastically loaded) as an alternative. |
| 世界的救主 (Savior of the world, 4:42) | Risk of narrowing to a single-ethnicity savior-figure if taught carelessly. | Retain full universal scope; reuse 救 root from baseline 救恩. |
1.5 Judgment and Belief/Unbelief — High
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 审判 (judgment/krisis) | Collides with the elaborate Chinese folk-religious postmortem judgment apparatus (十殿阎罗, the Ten Courts of the Kings of Hell; 阎王 weighing deeds against a ledger) and with impersonal 报应 (karmic retribution). | Teach explicitly as personal, present, belief-contingent divine evaluation (3:17-19; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31,48), not a bureaucratic underworld tribunal or karmic ledger. |
| 灭亡 (perish, 3:16; 10:28; 17:12) | Can be read in a purely this-worldly/political sense (a dynasty’s collapse) or risk a Buddhist annihilationist misreading near 无我/涅槃. | Clarify as a personal, eternal, spiritual state contingent on belief/unbelief. |
| 光 / 黑暗 (light/darkness, 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36,46) | Collides with Daoist yin-yang (阴阳) cosmology, where light and darkness are complementary, impersonal, morally neutral principles in dynamic balance. | Always teach as a moral-spiritual antithesis rooted in a personal God’s self-revelation, never a balanced cosmological duality; pair the two terms in every teaching note. |
| 复活得生 / 复活受审判 (5:28-29) | Risk of softening resurrection into a uniformly positive event. | Retain the explicit two-destiny distinction; reuse baseline 复活 exactly. |
1.6 The Seven “I Am” Statements — High (composite; individual statements range Critical–Medium)
| Statement | Mandarin | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bread of Life (6:35,48,51) | 生命的粮 | Folk ritual food-offering collision | Distinguish from offerings to spirits/ancestors |
| Light of the World (8:12; 9:5) | 世界的光 | Yin-yang collision | See §1.5 above |
| Door (10:7,9) | 门 | Loses exclusivity if paraphrased as “a door” | Retain definite/exclusive framing |
| Good Shepherd (10:11,14) | 好牧人 | Risk of losing the willing-death distinctive vs. hired hand | Foreground willingness to die for the sheep |
| Resurrection and the Life (11:25) | 复活和生命 | Risk of reading as a future event only, not a present personal agent | Teach Christ himself, not a cycle, as the source |
| Way, Truth, and Life (14:6) | 道路、真理、生命 | 道路 shares the character 道 with Logos (1:1) and with Daoist “the Way” — a striking but potentially confusing double resonance | Explain the two distinct Greek terms (λόγος, ὁδός) sharing one Mandarin character; keep both clear of impersonal Daoist 道 |
| True Vine (15:1,5) | 真葡萄树 | Risk of endorsing an autonomous self-cultivation reading | Fruitfulness contingent on abiding union, not independent effort |
1.7 The Holy Spirit as Counselor — Critical
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 圣灵 (baseline) | None new; risk is only the standing baseline caution against 灵 alone/祖灵. | Reuse exactly. |
| 保惠师 (Paraclete, 14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7) | A coined Chinese Christian term with low prior folk-religious baggage — but precisely because it has no independent everyday meaning, it must be actively taught, not assumed self-evident. Risk of drift toward a secular legal advocate (律师) or a folk-religious ritual intermediary (法师) who channels/manipulates spiritual power for a client. | Retain 保惠师; require explicit teaching of the threefold sense (legal advocate + comforter + Christ’s continuing presence); forbid 律师/法师 as glosses. |
| 真理的圣灵 (Spirit of truth, 14:17; 15:26; 16:13) | Risk of an impersonal “spirit of truthfulness” reading, or of a rival independent revelatory source. | Retain full divine personhood via 圣灵; tie inseparably to Christ’s own truth. |
| 领受圣灵 (receiving the Spirit, 20:22) | Risk of presentation as a repeatable ritual technique. | Teach as Christ’s unique commissioning gift, echoing Genesis 2:7’s creation-breath. |
1.8 Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection — Critical
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 神的羔羊 (Lamb of God, 1:29,36) | Collides with repeated Chinese folk-religious animal-offering rituals performed to appease deities/ancestors. | Teach as a unique, unrepeatable, once-for-all substitutionary sacrifice, not one offering among many. |
| 舍命 (lay down one’s life, 10:11,15,17-18; 15:13) | Risk of reading as externally imposed victimhood. | Preserve the voluntary, self-initiated nature (“of my own accord,” 10:18). |
| 替百姓死 (one man dies for the people, 11:49-52) | Risk of losing the narrative irony (a hostile political statement becomes true prophecy). | Teach the irony explicitly. |
| 举起来 (lifted up, 3:14; 8:28; 12:32,34) | Risk of drift toward 升天, which carries Daoist immortal-ascension connotations of triumphant, painless departure. | Retain 举起来; forbid 升天; preserve the paradox of simultaneous humiliation and glorification. |
| 复活 (resurrection, baseline) | Never 轮回/投胎/还魂. | Reuse exactly; ch.20’s concrete physical detail (grave-clothes, wounds) functions as an implicit anti-ghost-story polemic reinforcing this prohibition. |
| 成了 (It is finished, 19:30) | Risk of a resigned “it’s over” reading, or of drift toward a merit-accumulation model where the finished work could still be added to. | Teach as triumphant completion of a finished redemptive task. |
1.9 Unity of the Father and the Son — Critical
| Available Mandarin Term(s) | Weakness | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 我与父原为一 (10:30) | Risk of softening to Confucian relational-harmony (和, hé) language implying mere agreement or cooperative concord between two distinct persons. | Preserve as a shared-divine-being (ontological) claim, not a harmony claim. |
| 合而为一 (that they may be one, 17:11,21-23) | Risk of collapsing this derivative, relational unity of believers into the same ontological category as 10:30, or conversely flattening 10:30 into mere relational harmony. | Teach the two unities as distinct in kind, patterned but not identical. |
| 我的主,我的神 (20:28) | Risk of a social-honorific softening (老爷/主人-type reading). | Reuse baseline 主/神 exactly; never soften — this is the Gospel’s climactic worship confession. |
Section 2 — Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2.1 Genuine Missing Vocabulary (no Mandarin lexeme covers the source distinction at all)
| Gap | Passage | Nature of the Gap | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|
| πνεῦμα wind/Spirit pun | 3:8 | No single Mandarin word spans “wind” and “Spirit”; the rhetorical force (“the wind blows where it wishes… so is everyone born of the Spirit”) depends entirely on the pun in Greek/Hebrew, which cannot survive translation. | Mandatory teaching note explaining the wordplay is lost in Mandarin; retain CUV’s simile-bridge (风…圣灵也是如此) rather than forcing an artificial pun. |
| γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν double sense (“again” + “from above”) | 3:3,7 | 重生 captures “again”/“anew” but drops ἄνωθεν’s spatial “from above” component entirely. | Supply the compound gloss 从上头生/从神而生 alongside 重生 at every occurrence in teaching material. |
| ἀγαπάω / φιλέω alternation | 21:15-17 | Mandarin 爱 covers both verbs with no lexical distinction; the Greek’s deliberate alternation (does Peter’s φιλέω fall short of Jesus’s ἀγαπάω, until the third exchange aligns?) is invisible in translation. | Do not overbuild doctrine on an unrecoverable lexical nuance; shift teaching emphasis to the threefold repetition structure instead. |
| ζωή vs. βίος | throughout (esp. 10:10) | Mandarin 生命 does not lexically distinguish qualitative/God-given life (ζωή) from bare biological existence (βίος) the way Greek does. | Reinforce the qualitative sense contextually at every key passage rather than relying on the word alone to carry the distinction. |
| κρίνω vs. κατακρίνω (“judge” vs. “condemn”) | 3:17-18 | CUV differentiates via 审判 (judge) and 定…的罪 (condemn), but the underlying distinction between “God did not send the Son to judge” and “whoever does not believe is condemned already” is easy to blur in paraphrase. | Preserve CUV’s two distinct verb phrases exactly in the core passage; flag any paraphrase that collapses them into one term. |
| ὑψόω double meaning (crucifixion + exaltation) | 3:14; 8:28; 12:32,34 | No single Mandarin verb carries both “physically raised up on a cross” and “honorifically exalted” simultaneously. | 举起来 preserves ambiguity better than alternatives; mandatory teaching note surfacing both senses together rather than resolving the paradox. |
2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Active Fencing
These terms already exist in Mandarin with an established, non-Christian primary meaning that a target reader will access first. Each requires a standing “fence” — a mandatory disambiguating note at every doctrinal occurrence, not a one-time footnote.
| Term | Mandarin | Competing Neighborhood | Fencing Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Logos / Incarnation | 道 / 道成肉身 | Daoist metaphysical Way (道), the cosmic, impersonal generative principle of the Dao De Jing | Every occurrence: personal, eternal, self-existent divine Word, not an impersonal cosmic principle a person could align with through cultivation |
| Eternal life | 永生 | Daoist immortality-cultivation (长生不老, alchemy/elixir/qigong pursuit of physical immortality; 仙人/神仙 status) | Present, relational, qualitative life with God through faith, received now — never extended biological existence via technique |
| Born again | 重生 | Secular “turned my life around” usage; adjacency to (not identity with) Buddhist rebirth-cycle vocabulary | Spirit-wrought, God-originated re-creation, never a self-motivated “new leaf” nor reincarnation |
| Righteousness | 义 | Confucian Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信) — rightness cultivated by moral effort within relationships | Every justification/conviction-of-sin occurrence (16:8,10) flagged distinguishing forensic standing before God from Confucian moral achievement |
| Light / Darkness | 光/光明 / 黑暗 | Daoist yin-yang (阴阳) — complementary, impersonal, morally neutral cosmic principles in balance | Always taught as a moral-spiritual antithesis rooted in personal divine revelation, never a balanced duality |
| Judgment | 审判 | Folk underworld bureaucracy (十殿阎罗/阎王) and impersonal karmic retribution (报应) | Personal, present, belief-contingent divine evaluation, not a bureaucratic tribunal or karmic ledger |
| Sign | 神迹 | Folk-religious 灵验 (“efficacious response” to any deity at any temple) | Revelatory, identity-disclosing signs unique to the incarnate Son, not generic supernatural proof of any deity’s power |
| Sanctification / Holy | 成圣 / 圣洁 | Neo-Confucian self-cultivation into sagehood (Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming); Daoist/Buddhist ritual purity (清净) | Distinguish the Father’s unique consecration of the Son (10:36) from the Spirit’s ongoing work in believers (17:17,19), and both from self-achieved moral perfection |
| Children of God / Adoption | 神的儿女 | 过继 (clan-internal heir transfer to continue ancestor-worship obligations) | Full relational son/daughter status by God’s own begetting, not an instrumental lineage-continuation arrangement |
| Rabbi | 拉比 (transliteration retained) | 夫子 (Confucian sage-teacher, esp. 孔夫子) | Retain transliteration; forbid 夫子 as primary gloss to avoid framing Jesus as a Confucian-style sage |
| Freedom from sin | 释放 | 解脱 (Buddhist liberation from the cycle of samsara — already forbidden under baseline Salvation) | Freedom from sin’s power through abiding in Christ’s word, not escape from a suffering-cycle |
| Abide | 常在 | Daoist/Buddhist meditative “abiding” (安住, 入定) cultivated through stillness technique | A relationship of dependent faith sustained by Christ, tied to obedience and prayer (15:7,10), not a meditative state achieved by practice |
| Living water | 活水 | Daoist/folk “immortality spring” or magical healing-water motifs; 符水 (talisman water) | Symbol for Christ/the Spirit received by faith, not a magical substance or sacred location |
| Grace / Fruit | 恩典 / 果子 | 功德 (Buddhist merit-accounting) — baseline caution extends to “fruit” as evidence, not achievement | Fruit flows from abiding union, not self-generated moral achievement |
| Only begotten | 独生子 | Modern demographic category 独生子女 (one-child-policy “only child”) | Theological “unique, one-of-a-kind” sense, not a family-size descriptor |
Section 3 — Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term/Name | Decision | Rendering | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rabbi (ῥαββί) | Transliterate | 拉比 | Paraphrase candidates (夫子, generic 老师) either import Confucian sage-teacher framing or lose the specific honorific force; transliteration + explanatory note is safest. |
| Abba (Ἀββά) | Transliterate (retain alongside translation) | 阿爸 (+ 父) | Baseline decision; preserves the Aramaic intimacy the formal 父 alone does not carry. |
| Paraclete (παράκλητος) | Coined compound, not transliteration | 保惠师 | An existing, well-established Chinese Christian coinage; transliterating the Greek would produce an opaque, unusable term. Chosen over literal-calque alternatives (帮助者, “helper”) which lose the legal-advocate dimension. |
| Hosanna (12:13) | Transliterate | 和散那 | CUV-standard; no meaningful Mandarin paraphrase exists for a liturgical Hebrew acclamation. |
| Golgotha (19:17) | Transliterate + calque gloss | 各各他 (骷髅地) | Follow CUV’s own dual practice: transliterate the proper name and supply its meaning (“Place of a Skull”) as an in-text gloss, exactly as the source text itself does. |
| Siloam (9:7) | Transliterate | 西罗亚 | Proper place name; CUV-standard; John’s own text supplies the meaning gloss (“Sent”) — retain both. |
| Bethesda (5:2) | Transliterate | 毕士大 | Proper place name; CUV-standard. |
| Feast of Tabernacles (σκηνοπηγία, 7:2) | Calque/paraphrase, not transliteration | 住棚节 | A descriptive festival name is more useful to a low-OT-literacy reader than an unexplained transliteration; requires brief background note regardless. |
| Cana, Bethany, Samaria, Sychar (place names) | Transliterate | 迦拿, 伯大尼, 撒马利亚, 叙加 | Standard CUV forms; consistent with baseline proper-name policy. |
| ”I am” absolute (ἐγώ εἰμι) | Paraphrase only (no transliteration possible) | 我是 | Not a proper noun; the divine-name echo must be recovered through a teaching note, not through transliteration. |
| Logos (λόγος) | Paraphrase (established character), not transliteration | 道 | A Greek transliteration (逻各斯) exists in some philosophical contexts but is theologically opaque to ordinary readers and would sever the deliberate CUV continuity with 道成肉身 (John 1:14) already fixed in the baseline package. Retain 道 with mandatory fencing per §2.2. |
General principle applied: transliterate proper nouns (names of people, places, and untranslatable liturgical exclamations) using established CUV forms; paraphrase/translate theological common nouns and titles, applying fencing notes wherever the chosen Mandarin term sits in a crowded semantic neighborhood (§2.2).
Section 4 — Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities
Ranked by combined severity of doctrinal consequence and probability of reader misreading, with priority given to terms occurring in the core passage (John 3:1–21).
- 重生 (born again/from above) — John 3:3,7. Core-passage term. Highest risk: secular Mandarin readers default to “turned my life around”; risk of blending with reincarnation-adjacent folk vocabulary. A Spirit-wrought precondition for entering God’s kingdom must not collapse into a self-help metaphor. Critical.
- 道 (Logos) — John 1:1-3,14; echoed in 14:6’s 道路. Every occurrence risks a Daoist cosmological reading of Christ as an impersonal principle rather than a personal, pre-existent divine agent. Governs the reader’s entire framework for the Deity/Pre-existence doctrine. Critical.
- 永生 (eternal life) — John 3:15-16,36 and pervasive. Core-passage term. Risk of assimilation to Daoist immortality-cultivation aspiration (长生不老); undermines the “received now, by faith” character of the doctrine. Critical.
- 水和圣灵 (water and Spirit) — John 3:5. Core-passage term. Risk of a talisman-water (符水) magical-technique misreading that would turn the New Birth into a ritual performed for spiritual benefit rather than God’s sovereign act. Critical.
- 风/圣灵 wordplay — John 3:8. Core-passage term. Structurally unreproducible pun; without an explicit teaching note, the rhetorical force of the Spirit’s sovereign, untraceable work is simply lost, not merely weakened. High (translation-loss).
- 我与父原为一 (I and the Father are one) — John 10:30. Highest risk among Trinity-unity language: easy, natural-sounding softening toward Confucian relational harmony (和) would quietly convert an ontological identity claim into a cooperative-agreement claim. Critical.
- 审判 / 定…的罪 (judgment/condemnation) — John 3:17-19 and pervasive. Core-passage term. Risk of reader default to the folk underworld-tribunal system (十殿阎罗) or impersonal karmic retribution (报应), replacing a personal, belief-contingent divine verdict with a bureaucratic afterlife mechanism. High.
- 光/黑暗 (light/darkness) — John 3:19-21 and pervasive. Core-passage term. Risk of yin-yang assimilation, converting a moral-spiritual antithesis into a balanced, impersonal cosmological duality — precisely inverting the passage’s point that darkness is culpably chosen (3:19). High.
- 独生子 (only begotten) — John 3:16,18; 1:14,18. Core-passage term. Risk of demographic-category collision (独生子女) trivializing a unique-Sonship claim into a family-size descriptor; requires active, not passive, disambiguation. Critical.
- 世界 (kosmos, dual valence) — John 3:16-19 and pervasive. Core-passage term. Risk of readers flattening the positive (object of love) and negative (hostile order) senses into one, especially since both occur within the same short discourse (3:16 vs. 3:19-20). High.
- 义 (righteousness) — John 16:8,10. Lower frequency in John than in Romans but equally severe risk: default Confucian-virtue reading would convert the Spirit’s conviction of the world concerning righteousness into a conviction concerning social-ethical duty. Critical.
- 保惠师 (Paraclete) — John 14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7. Lower collision probability (coined term with no prior folk meaning) but severe consequence if drift occurs toward 法师 (ritual intermediary) or 律师 (secular lawyer) in loose paraphrase, since the term’s very lack of intuitive meaning makes untaught mis-explanation more likely than mis-translation. Critical.

| 18 | Reviewed, moderate | Arrest and trial; kingdom not of this world; further “I am” self-identification echo (18:5-6,8) — reinforces §1.1 (rank 2/9 chain); no new Critical terms beyond those logged. |
| 19 | Load-bearing | Crucifixion, King of the Jews, blood and water, bone not broken, “It is finished” — tabled in §1.8. |
| 20 | Load-bearing | Resurrection appearances, Thomas’s confession, receiving the Holy Spirit, Gospel purpose statement — tabled in §1.7, §1.8, §1.9. |
| 21 | Reviewed, moderate | Shepherd/feed my sheep commission, agapē/phileō alternation — tabled in §2.1 (missing-vocabulary gap) and cross-referenced to ch.10’s Good Shepherd. |
Conclusion: all 21 chapters of John have been reviewed. Every chapter contributes at least reinforcing content to a doctrine or fencing requirement already tabled above; no chapter is silently omitted. Chapters marked “moderate” contribute reinforcing occurrences of previously identified risk terms rather than introducing new Critical-tier vocabulary, and are noted here explicitly rather than left unaddressed.

It feeds directly into 08_core_glossary.md (already produced) and must inform the forthcoming John-specific extension of 12_ai_translation_requirements.md and doctrine_risk_registry.json.
