All Scripture references in Phase 2 output must use this book-name set with Arabic chapter:verse numerals, per the baseline’s Cross-Reference Preservation Rules.

Methodology Note

Exodus, as a Torah narrative book, does not itself quote prior Scripture in the way NT epistles quote the OT (it is the source text for later quotation). This analysis therefore inverts the baseline’s usual direction of citation and tracks, for every chapter:

  1. Backward links — where Exodus narrates the fulfillment of an earlier divine promise (chiefly to the patriarchs in Genesis).
  2. Forward links — every place the New Testament directly quotes, alludes to, or typologically fulfills an Exodus passage.
  3. Parallel-curriculum links — every place where the Romans curriculum (the sister curriculum sharing this Language Package) directly quotes or structurally depends on an Exodus passage. These require the strictest rendering-consistency enforcement, since both curricula’s Mandarin output must agree verbatim on the shared verse.

Every chapter of Exodus (1–40) is represented below. Chapters with no significant cross-reference beyond internal reuse of already-catalogued vocabulary are marked “Reviewed — no new cross-reference.”

PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix

Passage (Exodus)ThemeRelated Character(s)OT/NT ConnectionTranslation Sensitivity
Exodus 1:1-14Bondage as fulfillment of prophecyIsrael, PharaohBackward: fulfills Genesis 15:13-14 (400 years of affliction foretold to Abraham). Forward: recounted in Acts 7:17-19 (Stephen’s speech). Thematic root for Romans 6:16-20 (slavery to sin).High — 苦工/奴役 vocabulary (§08) must read as literal historical bondage here so that its later metaphorical extension to sin-slavery in a future Romans-adjacent teaching is not mistaken for the literal referent.
Exodus 1:15-22Preservation of the covenant lineShiphrah, Puah, Hebrew midwivesForward: Hebrews 11:23 references Moses’ preserved infancy as an act of faith by his parents.Low.
Exodus 2:1-10Moses drawn from the waterMoses, Pharaoh’s daughterForward: Acts 7:20-22 (Stephen recounts); Hebrews 11:24-25 (Moses’ choice by faith).Low.
Exodus 2:11-25Moses’ flight; God hears Israel’s groaningMosesBackward: echoes Genesis 15:13’s affliction promise, now nearing its resolution (“God heard their groaning and remembered his covenant,” 2:24, echoing Genesis 17:7). Forward: Acts 7:23-29.Medium — “God remembered his covenant” (2:24) must be rendered so the covenant-fidelity sense (约, established baseline term) is unmistakable, not a vague recollection.
Exodus 3:1-6Burning bush; holy ground; God of the fathersMosesForward: Matthew 22:32 / Mark 12:26 / Luke 20:37 — Jesus quotes Exodus 3:6 (“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”) to argue for the resurrection. Acts 7:30-32; Acts 3:13.High — the quotation must be rendered identically wherever it recurs across Matthew/Mark/Luke curricula under this Language Package; the present-tense “I am” (not “I was”) is the exegetical point of Jesus’ argument and must not be softened to a past-tense recollection in Mandarin (避免用”曾是”).
Exodus 3:13-15The divine name revealed: ‘Ehyeh Asher ‘Ehyeh / YHWHMoses, GodForward (typological/echo, not direct citation): John 8:58 “before Abraham was, I am” (ἐγώ εἰμι); John 8:24, 8:28, 13:19, 18:5-6 (the Johannine ἐγώ εἰμι sayings); Revelation 1:8, 1:17, 22:13 (“who is, and who was, and who is to come”).Critical — this is the anchor for the entire “Character and Name of God (I AM)” doctrine. 我是自有永有的 must be flagged for identical future rendering wherever a Gospel-of-John curriculum under this Language Package renders ἐγώ εἰμι absolutely (without a predicate). The Mandarin translator must not create two unrelated-looking phrases for what is theologically the same self-existence claim.
Exodus 3:19-22Egyptians’ plunder foretoldMoses, Israelite womenBackward: fulfills Genesis 15:14b (“they shall come out with great possessions”).Low.
Exodus 4:1-17Signs given; Aaron as Moses’ mouthMoses, AaronForward: Acts 7:34-36 (Stephen recounts the signs).Low.
Exodus 4:18-31Return to Egypt; Zipporah, circumcision episodeMoses, ZipporahBackward: circumcision as covenant sign, Genesis 17:10-14.Medium — the obscure “bridegroom of blood” episode (4:24-26) should be flagged for a translator’s explanatory note rather than a doctrinal rendering decision; no new glossary term required.
Exodus 5Pharaoh hardens the bondagePharaoh, Moses, AaronReviewed — no new cross-reference; reuses Exodus 1’s עֲבֹדָה קָשָׁה vocabulary.Low.
Exodus 6:2-8Covenant name proclaimed; redemption announcedGod, MosesBackward: explicit recollection of the Abrahamic covenant (Genesis 17:7-8). Forward (thematic, not direct quotation): Luke 1:68 (“he has visited and redeemed his people”); Titus 2:14; Romans 3:24.Critical — 救赎 (ga’al) here is the OT root of the entire Romans redemption vocabulary; the Mandarin rendering must be theologically continuous with, though not verbally identical to, 救恩/恩典 as used in the baseline Romans package.
Exodus 6:9-13, 26-30Genealogy anchoring Moses and AaronMoses, AaronReviewed — no new cross-reference.Low.
Exodus 7-10The plagues; “I am the LORD” refrainMoses, Aaron, PharaohRomans parallel — Critical: Romans 9:17 directly quotes Exodus 9:16 (“For this purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed throughout the earth”). This is one of the most consequential direct OT-in-Romans quotations in the entire baseline Romans curriculum (Romans 9, election/hardening argument, already flagged Critical there for election/predestination escalation).Critical. The Mandarin rendering of Exodus 9:16 in this curriculum and the Mandarin rendering of the same clause quoted in Romans 9:17 in the baseline curriculum must be verbatim identical. Any divergence (even a synonym substitution) creates an apparent contradiction between the two curricula for a Mandarin reader cross-checking references. See Rendering-Consistency Rule #1 below.
Exodus 11Final warning; favor (חֵן) before the Exodus; firstborn threatenedMoses, PharaohForward: Hebrews 11:28 (“by faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood”).Medium (inherited from §07/§08 note on 恩惠).
Exodus 12:1-14 (CORE PASSAGE)Passover instituted; substitutionary blood; the Lord’s sparingMoses, Aaron, Israel, the DestroyerForward (direct/typological, extensive): 1 Corinthians 5:7 (“For Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us,” directly naming Christ as the fulfillment of פֶּסַח/逾越节); John 1:29 (“Behold, the Lamb of God”); John 19:36 (direct quotation of Exodus 12:46, “not one of his bones will be broken”); 1 Peter 1:19 (echo of תָּמִים, “a lamb without blemish or spot”); Luke 22:7-20 (the Last Supper instituted at Passover); Revelation 5:6-13 (the slain Lamb enthroned).Critical — the single highest-sensitivity cross-reference cluster in the book. Every Mandarin rendering here (逾越节, 羊羔, 血, 无残疾的, 骨头一根也不可折断) must be locked for identical reuse in any future Gospel-of-John, 1 Corinthians, 1 Peter, or Revelation curriculum built on this Language Package. See Rendering-Consistency Rule #2.
Exodus 12:15-20Unleavened bread; leaven excludedIsraelForward: 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 — Paul explicitly builds his “leaven” ethical argument directly on this Exodus text, in the same chapter that names Christ as the Passover (5:7 immediately follows 5:6-8’s leaven discussion).High — 无酵饼/除酵 vocabulary must be taught as one continuous argument with 12:1-14’s Passover-lamb vocabulary, since Paul treats them as a single image cluster.
Exodus 12:21-28Blood on doorposts; explanation to be given to childrenIsraelForward: catechetical pattern echoed in Deuteronomy 6:20-25’s “when your son asks you” — establishes the didactic-memorial pattern later echoed in the Lord’s Supper’s “do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19).Medium.
Exodus 12:29-36Death of the firstborn; Egypt’s plunder givenIsrael, EgyptiansBackward: fulfills Genesis 15:14.Low.
Exodus 12:37-42The Exodus itself; 430 years fulfilledIsraelBackward: fulfills Genesis 15:13’s timeframe exactly; Galatians 3:17 references “430 years” in a different covenant-chronology argument (the Abrahamic covenant preceding the Sinai law by 430 years) — note this Galatians verse depends on the Exodus 12:40 chronology, relevant if a future Galatians curriculum is built on this Language Package.Medium — flag the 430-year figure for cross-curriculum chronological consistency.
Exodus 12:43-51Sojourner may join Passover via circumcision; “one law”Israel, sojourners (גֵּר)Forward (thematic): Ephesians 2:11-19 (Gentiles once “strangers” now fellow citizens); Romans 3:29-30 (already High-risk baseline doctrine “Unity of Jews and Gentiles”).High — see §07/§08 note on 寄居的; must not import Hua-Yi insider/outsider framing, consistent with baseline’s caution on 外邦人.
Exodus 13:1-2, 11-16Consecration of the firstborn; redemption (פָּדָה)IsraelForward (direct quotation): Luke 2:22-23 directly quotes/echoes Exodus 13:2/13:12 and Exodus 13:15’s redemption-price provision at Jesus’ presentation in the Temple (“every firstborn male shall be called holy to the Lord… and to offer a sacrifice”).Critical — direct fulfillment scene. Luke 2:22-24 stages the infant Jesus fulfilling this exact Exodus law. Mandarin rendering of 头生的 and 代赎 here must anticipate identical use in any future Luke curriculum.
Exodus 13:17-22Pillar of cloud and fireIsraelForward: 1 Corinthians 10:1 (“all passed through the sea… under the cloud”).Low-Medium.
Exodus 14Crossing the Red SeaMoses, Israel, EgyptiansForward: 1 Corinthians 10:1-2 (“baptized into Moses” through the sea); Hebrews 11:29 (“By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land”).Medium — 救恩 (14:13, “see the salvation of the LORD”) is an exact reuse of the baseline’s Critical salvation term; ensure the “stand still and see” passive-faith framing is preserved to reinforce (not contradict) Romans’ justification-by-faith teaching.
Exodus 15:1-21Song of the Sea; “who is like you among the gods”Moses, IsraelForward: Revelation 15:3 — “they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb” — an explicit typological pairing of this exact song with the Lamb’s song.High — flag 15:11’s polemic (“who is like you among the gods”) consistent with §07’s caution on generic 神 usage; must read as comparative-polemical monotheism, not acknowledgment of a functioning pantheon.
Exodus 15:22-27Bitter water made sweet; “the LORD who heals”Moses, IsraelThematic (not direct quotation): background for divine-healing-name theology later echoed in James 5:14-16.Medium (inherited).
Exodus 15:26”I am the LORD who heals you”GodSee above.Medium.
Exodus 16Manna; Sabbath introducedMoses, Aaron, IsraelForward (direct quotation): John 6:31-35, 6:49-51, 6:58 — Jesus directly quotes/alludes to the manna narrative (“he gave them bread from heaven to eat”) and identifies himself as the true bread from heaven. 1 Corinthians 10:3 (“they ate the same spiritual food”). Sabbath: Hebrews 4:9-11 (Sabbath rest as a type of the believer’s rest); Colossians 2:16-17 (Sabbath as “a shadow of things to come”).Critical (manna/bread-of-heaven typology). 吗哪 must remain a stable transliteration; the typological bridge to “true bread from heaven” must be flagged explicitly for any future John’s Gospel curriculum. Sabbath (安息日) risk inherited as Medium from §07/§08.
Exodus 17:1-7Water from the rock at Massah/MeribahMoses, IsraelForward (direct typological identification): 1 Corinthians 10:4 — “and the Rock was Christ.” This is one of the most direct OT-to-Christ identifications Paul makes anywhere in his letters.Critical. Mandarin rendering of “the rock” (磐石, pánshí, standard term) here must be flagged for identical, deliberate use in any future 1 Corinthians curriculum, since Paul’s argument depends on the reader recognizing the same referent across both texts.
Exodus 17:8-16War with Amalek; “the LORD is my banner”Moses, Joshua, Aaron, HurReviewed — no direct NT quotation; typological interest limited to the intercessory posture of Moses’ raised hands (relevant to “Moses as Mediator” doctrine, not a citation).Low-Medium.
Exodus 18Jethro’s counsel; judges appointedMoses, JethroThematic parallel only: Acts 6:1-6 (delegation of administrative burden onto appointed leaders) — structurally similar, not a quotation.Low.
Exodus 19:1-8Sinai theophany; treasured possession; kingdom of priests, holy nationMoses, Israel, GodForward (direct quotation): 1 Peter 2:9 directly quotes/echoes Exodus 19:5-6 (“you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession”). Titus 2:14 (“a people for his own possession,” echoing the same phrase, likely via Deuteronomy 14:2/Exodus 19:5). Hebrews 12:18-24 explicitly contrasts Sinai with Mount Zion.Critical — direct application of Israel’s covenant identity to the church. 祭司的国度、圣洁的国民 and 属我的子民 must be flagged for identical rendering wherever a future 1 Peter or Titus curriculum quotes this same clause.
Exodus 19:9-25Sinai theophany continued; the people’s fearMoses, IsraelForward: Hebrews 12:18-21 (recounts the terror of the mountain).Medium.
Exodus 20:1-17The Ten CommandmentsGod, IsraelRomans parallel — Critical: Romans 7:7 directly quotes Exodus 20:17 (“You shall not covet”); Romans 13:9 directly quotes Exodus 20:13-15, 17 (murder, adultery, theft, covetousness) as part of Paul’s love-fulfills-the-law argument. Also: Matthew 5:21, 5:27 (Jesus quotes commandments 6 and 7 in the Sermon on the Mount); Ephesians 6:2-3 and its parallel commandment to honor father and mother. James 2:11 cites two commandments together.Critical. Each commandment quoted in Romans 7:7 and 13:9 must be rendered in this Exodus curriculum with the exact Mandarin wording that the baseline Romans package uses (or will use) for its own quotation of the same clause. See Rendering-Consistency Rule #3.
Exodus 20:18-21The people’s fear; Moses as mediatorMoses, IsraelForward: Hebrews 12:18-21 (recounts this scene as a foil for the “better” new-covenant approach to God).Medium.
Exodus 20:22-26Altar lawIsraelReviewed — no direct NT quotation; reuses מִזְבֵּח (altar) vocabulary.Low.
Exodus 21Case laws: servants, personal injuryIsraelForward (partial direct quotation): Matthew 5:38 quotes Exodus 21:24’s “eye for eye, tooth for tooth” and reinterprets it.High — the Mandarin idiom 以眼还眼 (already a fixed secular Mandarin idiom per §07) must be handled so Jesus’ reinterpretation in a future Matthew curriculum reads as engaging the same legal principle, not an unrelated proverb.
Exodus 22Property and social laws; sojourner protectionIsraelThematic parallel: Matthew 25:35-40 (care for the stranger/vulnerable) shares the ethical concern, not a direct quotation.Low-Medium.
Exodus 23:1-19Justice laws; three annual feastsIsraelReviewed — reuses חַג (feast) vocabulary; no new direct NT quotation beyond the festival calendar’s fulfillment pattern already noted at Exodus 12.Low.
Exodus 23:20-33The angel sent ahead; “my name is in him”Moses, IsraelForward (echo/typology): Mark 1:2 conflates Malachi 3:1 with Exodus 23:20 (“Behold, I send my messenger before your face”) in introducing John the Baptist.Medium — flag the messenger/angel (使者) vocabulary for consistency with a future Gospel-of-Mark curriculum’s rendering of Mark 1:2.
Exodus 24:1-8Covenant ratified; blood of the covenantMoses, Israel, eldersForward (direct quotation): Matthew 26:28 / Mark 14:24 / Luke 22:20 / 1 Corinthians 11:25 — the Last Supper words directly echo “this is my blood of the covenant” from Exodus 24:8. Hebrews 9:18-20 explicitly quotes Exodus 24:8.Critical — direct typological/verbal bridge to the New Covenant. 立约的血 must be rendered so that a future curriculum on any Synoptic Gospel or 1 Corinthians can quote the Last Supper words with unmistakable resonance to this verse. See Rendering-Consistency Rule #4.
Exodus 24:9-18Elders see the God of Israel; Moses ascendsMoses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, seventy eldersForward: contrasted with John 1:18 (“no one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known”) and Exodus 33:20 (below) — theological tension to be resolved via limited/veiled theophany, not contradiction.Medium.
Exodus 25:1-9Tabernacle offering; pattern shown to MosesMoses, IsraelForward: Hebrews 8:5 directly quotes/echoes “see that you make them after the pattern” (Exodus 25:40) as part of Hebrews’ heavenly-pattern argument.High.
Exodus 25:10-22Ark and mercy seat (כַּפֹּרֶת)MosesRomans parallel — Critical: Romans 3:25’s ἱλαστήριον (already an escalation-flagged atonement/propitiation term in the baseline Romans package) is the same Greek word the Septuagint uses to translate כַּפֹּרֶת in Exodus 25:17. Hebrews 9:5 names this object directly (ἱλαστήριον, “the mercy seat”).Critical. 施恩座 in this Exodus curriculum and whatever Mandarin rendering the baseline package uses for Romans 3:25’s ἱλαστήριον must be checked for exact alignment — if Romans 3:25 is rendered with a different compound, this is a cross-curriculum inconsistency requiring resolution. See Rendering-Consistency Rule #5.
Exodus 25:23-40Table, lampstandMosesForward: Hebrews 9:2 (table and lampstand named in the tabernacle inventory).Low.
Exodus 26Tabernacle structure; the veil (פָּרֹכֶת)MosesForward (direct typological fulfillment): Matthew 27:51 / Mark 15:38 / Luke 23:45 (the temple veil torn at Christ’s death); Hebrews 9:3, 10:20 (“through the curtain, that is, through his flesh”).High — 幔子 must be flagged for identical rendering in any future Synoptic Gospel curriculum’s account of the veil’s tearing.
Exodus 27Bronze altar; courtyardMosesForward: Hebrews 13:10 (“we have an altar”) — thematic, not direct quotation.Low-Medium.
Exodus 28Priestly garmentsAaron and sonsForward (typological development): Hebrews 4:14-5:10, 7:1-28 — the entire book of Hebrews’ high-priesthood Christology argues Christ’s priesthood is superior to, and fulfills, this Aaronic office.High — 祭司/大祭司 vocabulary is the OT foundation for the whole Hebrews priesthood argument; must be rendered consistently in any future Hebrews curriculum.
Exodus 29Consecration of priests; anointingMoses, AaronForward (etymological/typological root): the root behind מָשִׁיחַ/Χριστός/基督 (baseline Critical term). Acts 4:27, 10:38 (“God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and power”).High — flag 膏/受膏 explicitly as the etymological seedbed of 基督 in any teaching notes; do not present the two as unrelated vocabulary.
Exodus 30Incense altar; atonement money; anointing oilMoses, IsraelForward: Luke 1:9-11 (Zechariah’s incense offering); Revelation 8:3-4 (incense as the prayers of the saints — thematic, not direct quotation).Medium.
Exodus 31Sabbath as covenant sign; Spirit-filled craftsmenMoses, Bezalel, OholiabForward (thematic parallel): 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 (diverse Spirit-given enablements for building up God’s people) — a direct conceptual parallel to the baseline’s Medium-risk “spiritual gifts” (属灵恩赐) doctrine, here applied to Tabernacle craftsmanship rather than church ministry.Critical (per §07/§08’s elevated rule for רוּח אֱלֹהִים). Must render 神的灵, never bare 灵; flag every occurrence for theologian review given the Trinitarian-development sensitivity.
Exodus 32The golden calf; Moses’ intercessionMoses, Aaron, IsraelForward (direct quotation): 1 Corinthians 10:7 directly quotes Exodus 32:6 (“the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play”) as an explicit warning against idolatry. Acts 7:39-41 (Stephen recounts).Critical. The direct quotation in 1 Corinthians 10:7 means the Mandarin rendering of Exodus 32:6 established here must be checked for consistency with any future 1 Corinthians curriculum’s rendering of the same quoted clause.
Exodus 33:1-11Tent of meeting outside the camp; Moses speaks with God face to faceMoses, JoshuaForward: contrasted with John 1:18 (see 24:9-18 note above).Medium.
Exodus 33:12-17”My presence will go with you”Moses, GodForward (thematic root): Matthew 1:23’s “Immanuel… God with us” and John 1:14’s “the Word became flesh and dwelt (ἐσκήνωσεν, tent-rooted) among us” both draw on this presence-theology.High — 同在 must be flagged for consistency with any future Matthew or John curriculum rendering “God with us”/“dwelt among us.”
Exodus 33:18-23Moses’ request to see God’s glory; “no one may see my face and live”Moses, GodForward: John 1:18, 1 Timothy 6:16 (“whom no one has ever seen or can see”).High.
Exodus 33:19”I will have mercy on whom I have mercy”GodRomans parallel — Critical: Romans 9:15 directly quotes Exodus 33:19 in Paul’s argument about God’s sovereign mercy (Romans 9, already Critical-flagged in the baseline for election/predestination escalation).Critical. This is one of the two most important direct Exodus-in-Romans quotations in the entire cross-curriculum set (with Exodus 9:16/Romans 9:17). Mandarin rendering here must be verbatim-identical to the baseline’s rendering of Romans 9:15. See Rendering-Consistency Rule #1.
Exodus 34:1-9Covenant renewed; tablets rewrittenMoses, GodReviewed — no new direct NT quotation beyond 34:6-7 below.Low.
Exodus 34:6-7”The LORD, merciful and gracious… abounding in steadfast love (חֶסֶד)“GodForward (echoed constantly, though rarely verbatim-quoted): Numbers 14:18; Psalm 86:15; 103:8; 145:8; Joel 2:13; Jonah 4:2; Nehemiah 9:17; James 5:11 (“the Lord is compassionate and merciful”).Critical. This is the OT’s most frequently echoed self-revelation formula. 有怜悯,有恩典 must reuse baseline 恩典 exactly (per §07/§08); 慈爱 (chesed) is a required new Critical-tier glossary promotion (§08) that must remain visually and lexically distinct from, yet clearly allied with, 恩典/恩惠.
Exodus 34:10-28Covenant stipulations renewedMoses, IsraelReviewed — reuses ch.20-23 case-law and feast vocabulary.Low.
Exodus 34:29-35Moses’ shining, veiled faceMosesForward (extended direct typological engagement): 2 Corinthians 3:7-18 — Paul builds an extended argument directly on this passage, contrasting the fading glory on Moses’ veiled face with the unveiled, permanent glory of the new covenant.Critical. 帕子 (veil) here must be flagged for identical rendering in any future 2 Corinthians curriculum, since Paul’s entire argument in that chapter depends on the reader recognizing this specific narrative image.
Exodus 35Freewill offering for the TabernacleIsraelReviewed — reuses רוּח אֱלֹהִים (ch.31); no new direct cross-reference.Low.
Exodus 36-39Construction of Tabernacle and garmentsBezalel, Oholiab, IsraelReviewed — executes chs. 25-30 instructions verbatim; no new theological vocabulary or cross-reference.Low.
Exodus 40:1-33Tabernacle erectedMoses, IsraelReviewed — reuses מִשְׁכָּן vocabulary.Low.
Exodus 40:34-38The glory of the LORD fills the TabernacleGod, Moses, IsraelForward (thematic culmination, paralleled at later redemptive-historical milestones): 1 Kings 8:10-11 (glory fills Solomon’s Temple, the same pattern repeated); John 1:14 (“the Word became flesh and dwelt/tabernacled among us, and we have seen his glory”); 2 Corinthians 6:16; Ephesians 2:22 (the church as God’s dwelling by the Spirit); Revelation 21:3 (“the dwelling place of God is with man” — the eschatological, final fulfillment of this exact pattern).Critical — the book’s thesis-climax verse. Must be treated with the same cross-document consistency weight the baseline assigns to Romans 1:16-17, 8:28, and 10:9-10. Every future curriculum in this Language Package that touches “God dwelling with his people” (John, Ephesians, Revelation) should be checked against this verse’s Mandarin rendering for thematic (not necessarily verbal) continuity.

PART B — Messianic References and Typology Summary

PART C — Direct Parallels to the Romans Curriculum

Because Romans is the baseline curriculum already governing this Language Package, every place where Romans directly quotes Exodus requires strict, checkable rendering agreement between the two curricula’s Mandarin output. These are the highest-priority items for Phase 2 quality assurance.

#Exodus CitationRomans CitationShared Clause (English)Consistency Requirement
1Exodus 33:19Romans 9:15”I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”Mandarin rendering of 怜悯/恩待 in both curricula’s treatment of this clause must match verbatim. This clause sits inside Romans’ Critical-flagged election/predestination escalation rule (baseline 12_ai_translation_requirements.md); Exodus 12 curriculum materials must inherit the same Critical routing whenever this verse is quoted.
2Exodus 9:16Romans 9:17”For this purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed throughout the earth.”Mandarin rendering of 神的大能 (already baseline-fixed) must appear identically in both curricula’s rendering of this clause; do not substitute a synonym for “power” here.
3Exodus 20:13-15, 17Romans 7:7; Romans 13:9”You shall not murder / commit adultery / steal / covet.”Each individual commandment must be rendered with one single, fixed Mandarin wording usable identically in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20), Romans 7:7, and Romans 13:9. Recommended base forms: 不可杀人 / 不可奸淫 / 不可偷盗 / 不可贪心 (or 不可贪恋), following CUV.
4Exodus 24:8(Parallel in Matthew 26:28, Mark 14:24, Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25 — not Romans directly, but load-bearing for any future Gospels/1 Corinthians curriculum sharing this package)“This is the blood of the covenant.”立约的血 must be the single fixed rendering reused across Exodus 24:8 and every Last Supper account in any future curriculum under this Language Package. Flagged here because Romans 3:25’s atonement-blood theology (already Critical in the baseline) depends conceptually on this same covenant-blood category.
5Exodus 25:17 (LXX ἱλαστήριον)Romans 3:25 (ἱλαστήριον)“propitiation” / “mercy seat”施恩座 (Exodus 25:17) must be checked against whatever Mandarin term the baseline Romans package uses for Romans 3:25’s ἱλαστήριον. If the baseline currently renders Romans 3:25 with a different compound (e.g. a periphrastic “献上作为赎罪祭” rather than 施恩座), this is a flagged cross-curriculum inconsistency requiring theologian resolution before Phase 2 translation of either curriculum proceeds further — both verses render the identical Greek/Hebrew technical term and should not diverge without an explicit, documented reason.
6Exodus 1-14 (bondage/deliverance narrative, structural)Romans 6:16-23 (slavery to sin/slavery to righteousness)N/A — structural/typological parallel, not a verbal quotation奴役/奴仆 (Exodus) and any future Mandarin rendering of δοῦλος τῆς ἁμαρτίας in Romans 6 should be taught as one continuous bondage-to-freedom image; teaching notes, not glossary terms, carry this consistency requirement.
7Exodus 3:14 (“I AM WHO I AM”)Romans 10:9 (“Jesus is Lord” — 耶稣是主, already Critical-fixed in the baseline)N/A — structural/theological parallel: both are the definitive self-identification confession of their respective covenant momentsNo shared Mandarin wording is required (the confessions are textually distinct), but teaching material should note the continuity: the God who names himself 耶和华/我是自有永有的 in Exodus is confessed as 主 in Romans 10:9 — the same divine identity across both Testaments.

PART D — Rendering-Consistency Rules for Phase 2

  1. Rule 1 (Exodus 9:16 / Romans 9:17; Exodus 33:19 / Romans 9:15): Before translating either verse in either curriculum, the translator must check the other curriculum’s translation memory entry for the same clause (once it exists) and use identical wording. If Romans has not yet been translated at the point Exodus is processed, the Exodus rendering becomes the fixed standard the Romans workflow must later match, and must be logged as such in translation memory with a cross-curriculum flag.
  2. Rule 2 (Passover/Lamb cluster, Exodus 12): 逾越节, 羊羔, 血, 无残疾的, and the “not one bone broken” clause are locked terms the moment they are finalized for Exodus 12; any future John, 1 Corinthians, 1 Peter, or Revelation curriculum under this Language Package must load and reuse them exactly, per the same mechanism the baseline uses for πάσχα consistency.
  3. Rule 3 (Ten Commandments, Exodus 20 / Romans 7:7, 13:9): Fix one Mandarin wording per commandment at the time Exodus 20 is translated; this becomes binding for Romans 7:7 and 13:9 without exception, since both are direct quotations of the same legal text.
  4. Rule 4 (Covenant blood, Exodus 24:8): 立约的血 is binding for any future Last-Supper-institution narrative (Matthew, Mark, Luke, 1 Corinthians) sharing this Language Package.
  5. Rule 5 (Mercy seat, Exodus 25:17 / Romans 3:25): Flag for theologian review at the next Language Package revision cycle: confirm or correct alignment between 施恩座 and the baseline’s existing Romans 3:25 rendering before either curriculum’s Phase 2 batch touches these verses.
  6. Rule 6 (Rock typology, Exodus 17:1-7 / 1 Corinthians 10:4): 磐石 must be reserved for this typological referent in any future 1 Corinthians materials; avoid introducing a separate, unrelated Mandarin word for “rock” in 1 Corinthians 10 that would obscure the intended identification with Exodus 17.
  7. Rule 7 (Presence/dwelling cluster, Exodus 33:14-15, 40:34-35 / John 1:14, Ephesians 2:22, Revelation 21:3): 同在 and 帐幕-family vocabulary must be taught as one coherent presence-theology arc; a future John’s Gospel curriculum’s rendering of “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” should be checked for thematic (not necessarily lexical, since σκηνόω requires its own verb) continuity with this arc.
  8. General rule: Any newly discovered direct OT-NT quotation pair not listed above that is uncovered during Phase 2 processing of a future curriculum must be back-checked against this document and, if it involves an Exodus verse, added here upon the next revision.

This analysis extends, and does not contradict, analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md and analysis/08_core_glossary.md. All Mandarin term choices referenced above defer to those documents and to translation_memory.json where a term is already fixed.
