Doctrine Analysis
11 — Doctrine Analysis: Isaiah — Full Book Matrix (English → Mandarin)
This document executes PRD Phase 1 Step 4 (doctrine identification and mapping) and Step 5 (risk-tier assignment) for the entire book of Isaiah, chapters 1–66. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 31 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review-routing assignments are used throughout. This document adds the chapter-by-chapter and section-by-section mapping that the registry does not itself narrate, and it explicitly notes every chapter’s contribution (or lack of new contribution) so that full-book coverage is auditable.
Core passage anchor: Isaiah 53:1-12 (The Suffering Servant). This passage is the theological center of gravity for the curriculum but is never treated as the boundary of scope — every chapter of Isaiah is analyzed below.
Risk tier definitions (identical to baseline and to the Isaiah doctrine_risk_registry.json):
- Critical — mistranslation destroys essential doctrine; human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — mistranslation risks significant confusion or syncretism; human theologian review required.
- Medium — mistranslation reduces clarity but preserves core meaning; native speaker review recommended.
- Low — minor imprecision only; automated review sufficient.
Full Doctrine Matrix (31 Doctrines, Registry-Consistent)
| # | Doctrine (registry key) | Mandarin Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages (Isaiah) | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Holiness and Majesty of God (holiness_and_majesty_of_god) | 神的圣洁与威严 | 6:1-8; 40:25; 57:15 | Critical | Trisagion (圣哉!圣哉!圣哉!) must not collapse into ordinary adjectival 圣洁; Seraphim (撒拉弗) must not be rendered with dragon/phoenix imagery, which carries opposite auspicious-imperial connotations in Chinese tradition. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Divine Calling and Commissioning (divine_calling_of_the_prophet) | 神对先知的呼召与差遣 | 6:8-13 | High | Personal, relational summons (“Here am I, send me”) vs. impersonal 天命 (Mandate of Heaven). | Human theologian |
| 3 | Purification Before Divine Service (purification_before_service) | 蒙洁净方能事奉 | 6:5-7 | High | God’s sovereign purifying act (burning coal) vs. self-directed ritual purification (清净) or Neo-Confucian self-cultivation (修身). | Human theologian |
| 4 | Judgment on Israel’s Idolatry and Injustice (judgment_on_idolatry_and_injustice) | 对以色列拜偶像与不义的审判 | 1:2-31; 2:8,18-20; 3:1-4:1; 5:1-30; 10:1-4; 44:9-20; 57:1-13 | High | 偶像 (idols) must target image-worship as rivalry to God, not be conflated with ancestor-veneration (祭祖); 公义 (mishpat-tsedaqah pairing) is God’s own character outworked socially, not a separable secular-ethics category. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The Day of the LORD (the_day_of_the_lord) | 耶和华的日子 | 2:12; 13:6,9; 34:8; 63:4 | Medium | Distinguish from Chinese astrological “auspicious day” selection (黄道吉日); this is God’s sovereign act, not a fortuitous calendar date. | Native speaker review |
| 6 | The Messianic Branch and Davidic Lineage (the_messianic_branch_and_davidic_lineage) | 弥赛亚的苗与大卫的血统 | 4:2; 11:1,10; 53:2; 55:3 | High | Unified 苗/枝子/根 motif must never be rendered 化身 (bodhisattva manifestation — temporary, repeatable), implying instead a genuine once-for-all lineage fulfillment. | Human theologian |

| 11 | The Incarnation and Virgin Birth (the_incarnation_and_virgin_birth) | 道成肉身与童女生子 | 7:14 | Critical | 以马内利 requires the baseline’s 道成肉身/道 (vs. Daoist 道) note; 童女 (almah) requires explicit teaching of the LXX/Matthew/CUV interpretive tradition rather than assuming it is self-evident from the Hebrew alone. | Human theologian |
| 12 | The Suffering Servant and Substitutionary Atonement (the_suffering_servant_and_substitutionary_atonement) | 受苦的仆人与代赎 | 52:13-53:12 | Critical | 担当/背负 must render consistently to preserve substitution; 53:4’s crowd misjudgment (“被神击打”) must be corrected in teaching notes against a 报应 (karmic retribution) misreading; 刑罚 must retain penal/judicial sense. | Human theologian |

08_core_glossary.md. - Chapters 15–18, 20–23 (oracles against Moab, Damascus, Cush, Egypt, Babylon, Edom, Arabia, Tyre) are reviewed and confirmed to reinforce Doctrine #21 without introducing new Critical/High terms beyond those already catalogued.

- Chapter 29’s “Ariel” oracle and ch. 31’s “trust/rely” (batach) material are reviewed and confirmed to reinforce existing doctrines (#4, #19’s grace-vs-self-reliance contrast) without new Critical terms.
Isaiah 36–39: The Hezekiah Narrative
- Doctrines active: #21 Sovereignty of God over the Nations (Critical, 37:16-20, Hezekiah’s prayer, a precursor to the “there is no other” monotheism formula); #7 Davidic Covenant (High, 37:35, God’s promise “for my servant David’s sake”).
- Chapter 38 (Hezekiah’s illness, healing, and thanksgiving psalm, 38:9-20) is reviewed: it touches the baseline
thanksgiving(感恩) term and echoes Resurrection-adjacent language (“I shall not see the LORD… in the land of the living”) but introduces no new Isaiah-specific Critical/High term. - Chapter 39 (the Babylonian envoys) is reviewed and confirmed to function as a narrative hinge into chapters 40-66 (the exile and Babylon oracles), introducing no new doctrine itself.
Isaiah 40–48: Comfort, Monotheism, and Cyrus
- Doctrines active: #22 Comfort and Restoration (High, 40:1-11, anchor text for the whole “comfort” section); #23 Inspiration and Permanence of God’s Word (High, 40:6-8); #1 Holiness (Critical, 40:25); #20 The Redeemer of Israel (Critical, 41:14, 43:1,14, 44:6,24, 47:4, 48:17); #18 Servant of the LORD, corporate sense (High, 41:8-9); #9 The Coming Messiah (Critical, 42:1-9, first Servant Song); #24 Salvation Extended to the Nations (High, 42:6 “light to the nations”); #4 Judgment on Idolatry (High, 44:9-20, idol-manufacture satire); #21 Sovereignty of God over the Nations (Critical, “there is no other,” 44:6-8, 45:5,18,22); #10 God’s Sovereign Use of Pagan Rulers (Critical, 44:28, 45:1-13, Cyrus); #28 Potter and Clay/Providence (High, 46:9-11); judgment on Babylon (ch. 47, reinforcing #21).
- This section carries the highest concentration of Critical-tier collision risk outside chapter 53, because Cyrus’s generic “anointed” title (ch. 45) sits one root away from 基督 itself.
Isaiah 49–51: The Servant’s Mission and Zion’s Comfort
- Doctrines active: #18 Servant of the LORD, individual sense sharpening (High, 49:1-7); #24 Salvation Extended to the Nations (High, 49:6); #20 The Redeemer of Israel (Critical, 49:26); #18 continued (High, 50:4-11, the Servant’s obedience under suffering); ch. 51 reinforces baseline
righteousness/salvationdoctrines and #22 Comfort without introducing new Isaiah-specific Critical terms.
Isaiah 52–53: The Suffering Servant (Core Passage)
- Doctrines active: #25 The Gospel Proclamation Rooted in Isaiah (High, 52:7); #12 The Suffering Servant and Substitutionary Atonement (Critical, 52:13-53:12, the anchor text of the entire curriculum); #13 Imputation of Guilt to the Servant (Critical, 53:6,11,12); #14 The Guilt Offering and Sacrificial Fulfillment (Critical, 53:7,10); #15 Justification Through the Servant’s Knowledge and Work (Critical, 53:11); #16 The Voluntary and Purposive Suffering of the Servant (Critical, 53:10,12); #17 Resurrection Hope (Critical, 53:10’s implied resurrection); #18 Servant of the LORD, corporate/individual tension resolved climactically (High).
- Every clause of Isaiah 53 requires mandatory human theologian review without exception; this is the single highest-density Critical-risk passage in the book, consistent with the escalation note in
08_core_glossary.md.
Isaiah 54–57: Covenant Love, Free Invitation, and the House of Prayer
- Doctrines active: #19 Grace and God’s Free Favor (Critical, 54:8,10 chesed; 55:1-3 free invitation); #22 Comfort and Restoration (High, 54:1-17, “Maker is your husband,” 54:5); #7 Davidic Covenant (High, 55:3, “everlasting covenant… David”); #23 Inspiration/Permanence of God’s Word (High, 55:10-11); #24 Salvation Extended to the Nations (High, 56:1-8, “house of prayer for all nations,” Sabbath extended to foreigners); #1 Holiness (Critical, 57:15); #4 Judgment on Idolatry (High, 57:1-13, continuing indictment).

- Doctrines active: #5 Day of the LORD (Medium, 63:4, “day of vengeance”); #19 Grace (Critical, 63:7, chesed); #20 The Redeemer of Israel (Critical, 63:16); Fatherhood imagery (63:16, 64:8, baseline
father/adoptionterms, High); #28 Potter and Clay/Providence (High, 64:8).
Isaiah 65–66: New Heavens and New Earth, and the Book’s Closing Vision

Full-book coverage confirmed: every chapter of Isaiah (1–66) is mapped above either to one or more active doctrines or explicitly noted as reviewed with no new doctrine-bearing content (chapters 3, 5, 8’s narrative material, 12, 15–18, 20–23, 29, 31, 36, 38, 39, 51). No chapter is silently omitted.
This document is consistent with and does not contradict assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, analysis/08_core_glossary.md, or the baseline Romans Language Package. It must be loaded alongside those artifacts in Phase 2 pre-flight.
Critical Risk Doctrines
The Holiness and Majesty of God
Mandarin name: 神的圣洁与威严
Key terms: trisagion, holy, glory, seraphim
Review routing: Human theologian
The Trisagion’s threefold ‘圣哉’ exclamation must be kept distinct from the adjectival 圣洁 (moral set-apartness); flattening either into the other loses the doxological force of Isaiah 6:3, the anchor text for the whole doctrine, quoted Revelation 4:8. Seraphim must not be conflated with Chinese mythological dragons/phoenixes, which carry opposite, auspicious-imperial connotations.
Deity of Christ in the Messianic Throne-Names
Mandarin name: 弥赛亚君王称号中基督的神性
Key terms: mighty_god, everlasting_father, wonderful_counselor, prince_of_peace
Review routing: Human theologian
全能的神 (Mighty God) directly overlaps the baseline’s Critical term 神 and must never be softened to ‘godlike’ or ‘an especially exalted man.’ 永在的父 (Everlasting Father) requires a modalism-guarding note distinguishing the Messiah’s eternal fatherly character from identity with the first Trinitarian Person. 和平的君 must avoid the Chinese dynastic reign-title flavor of 太平王.
The Coming Messiah
Mandarin name: 所应许的弥赛亚
Key terms: messiah_christ, cyrus_anointed, messiah_self_anointing, precious_cornerstone
Review routing: Human theologian
基督 must NEVER be used for Cyrus’s generic ‘anointed’ office-title (45:1, 受膏者) — the single most important Isaiah-specific collision risk, since both derive from the same Hebrew root mashiach but designate entirely different referents. Also must never be conflated with 弥勒 (Maitreya), the future Buddha of Chinese Buddhist eschatology.
God’s Sovereign Use of Pagan Rulers (Cyrus)
Mandarin name: 神主权地使用异邦君王(古列)
Key terms: cyrus_anointed, there_is_no_other, the_living_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Cyrus’s title 受膏者/我所膏的 must be sharply distinguished from 基督 in every occurrence; rendering it as 基督 would falsely identify a pagan Persian king as the eschatological Messiah, contradicting the Messianic Promise doctrine that Christ alone fulfills that title.
The Incarnation and Virgin Birth
Mandarin name: 道成肉身与童女生子
Key terms: immanuel, virgin_young_woman
Review routing: Human theologian
以马内利 must be taught with the baseline’s 道成肉身 note distinguishing the personal, eternal divine Word from the impersonal Daoist metaphysical 道. 童女’s underlying Hebrew almah has a broader semantic range than ‘virgin’ proper; the CUV/LXX/Matthew interpretive tradition must be explained explicitly rather than assumed self-evident, per the semantic analysis flag.
The Suffering Servant and Substitutionary Atonement
Mandarin name: 受苦的仆人与代赎
Key terms: bear_carry_substitution, carried_as_burden, stricken_smitten_by_god, pierced, penal_punishment, crushed, stripes_wounds, man_of_sorrows
Review routing: Human theologian
担当/背负 must render consistently across every occurrence in Isaiah 53 to preserve the substitution motif; softening to ‘sympathized with’ erases the doctrine. The crowd’s mistaken assumption in 53:4 (被神击打, ‘stricken by God’) that the Servant deserved his suffering must be explicitly corrected in teaching notes, since Chinese readers steeped in a retribution (报应) worldview may otherwise misread it as confirming guilt. 刑罚 (musar) must retain its judicial/penal sense, never softened to generic hardship.
Imputation of Guilt to the Servant
Mandarin name: 众人的罪孽归在仆人身上
Key terms: laid_on_him_imputation, imputed_righteousness, guilt_offering
Review routing: Human theologian
归在他身上 (53:6) is the OT structural mirror of 算为义: here guilt moves to the innocent Servant, there righteousness moves to the guilty believer. Every occurrence requires a cross-reference note; omitting it risks Mandarin readers processing this only through a generic 报应 (karmic retribution) lens rather than as deliberate, gracious substitution.
The Guilt Offering and Sacrificial Fulfillment
Mandarin name: 赎罪祭的应验
Key terms: guilt_offering, lamb_of_sacrifice
Review routing: Human theologian
赎罪祭 (asham) is the theological center of the atonement doctrine and must never suggest Buddhist merit-transfer (回向). The common secular idiom 替罪羊 (‘scapegoat’) has drifted from this very biblical concept to mean merely ‘someone unfairly blamed’; teachers must explicitly restore its technical, cultic, atoning sense rather than rely on the flattened idiom.
Justification Through the Servant’s Knowledge and Work
Mandarin name: 因认识义仆而得称义
Key terms: righteous_servant, justification, the_many
Review routing: Human theologian
我的义仆’s 义 must carry the baseline’s mandatory distinguishing note against the Confucian-virtue reading; 称义 must never be presented as a process of moral cultivation (forbidden baseline substitution 修成正果). 许多人 requires a note that this is inclusive but not automatically universal, consistent with Salvation Extended to the Nations doctrine.
The Voluntary and Purposive Suffering of the Servant
Mandarin name: 仆人甘心受苦乃出于耶和华的旨意
Key terms: poured_out_his_soul_to_death, numbered_with_transgressors
Review routing: Human theologian
耶和华的旨意/喜悦 behind the Servant’s crushing (53:10) requires careful theologian-level framing to avoid either portraying God as arbitrarily cruel or collapsing into impersonal fate (天意), paralleling the baseline’s Providence doctrine caution. The Servant’s self-offering must be taught as voluntary, not a defeat imposed against his will.
Resurrection Hope in the Servant and in Israel
Mandarin name: 仆人与以色列的复活盼望
Key terms: resurrection, swallow_up_death
Review routing: Human theologian
复活 must never be rendered with 轮回/投胎/还魂; Isaiah 53:10’s implication that the dead Servant ‘sees his offspring’ requires resurrection, and 26:19 is among the clearest OT bodily-resurrection texts, both anchoring the New Testament doctrine without contradiction.
Grace and God’s Free Favor (chen/chesed)
Mandarin name: 神的恩典与慈爱
Key terms: grace, lord_shows_grace_verb, chesed_steadfast_love, true_fasting, lords_favor_acceptable_year
Review routing: Human theologian
恩典/施恩 must never use 功德/阴德/造化. 慈爱 must NEVER be rendered 慈悲, the defining virtue-term of Buddhist compassion associated with Guanyin devotion — this would import a Buddhist devotional figure’s central virtue directly into Scripture. Isaiah 55’s free invitation and 58’s redefinition of fasting are key grace-versus-merit teaching texts against the folk-Buddhist merit-ledger worldview.
The Redeemer of Israel
Mandarin name: 以色列的救赎主
Key terms: redeemer
Review routing: Human theologian
救赎主 must never be rendered in a way suggesting Buddhist bodhisattva figures (观音, 阿弥陀佛) who save through compassionate intervention apart from covenant-kinship or a paid price; Isaiah’s go’el is a relational, covenant-kin redeemer, categorically distinct from a compassionate bystander-deity.
The Sovereignty of God over the Nations
Mandarin name: 神掌管万国的主权
Key terms: there_is_no_other, i_am_first_and_last, the_living_god, leviathan, day_star_son_of_dawn, potter_and_clay
Review routing: Human theologian
再没有别神 must retain unqualified exclusivity against a folk-religious multi-deity framework (city gods, kitchen god). 利维坦 must never be rendered 龙 (dragon), an auspicious imperial symbol with the opposite connotation of a judged chaos-monster. 窑匠与泥 must retain a personal, purposive shaping relationship, not collapse into impersonal fate (命运).
Spirit-Anointed Messianic Mission
Mandarin name: 受灵膏抹的弥赛亚使命
Key terms: messiah_self_anointing, holy_spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
用膏膏我/我受膏 is the clearest single OT text linking Spirit-anointing, the Messiah, and gospel proclamation together, directly quoted by Jesus of himself (Luke 4:18-19); must be distinguished from Cyrus’s generic 受膏者 office-designation in chapter 45 even while sharing the same root.
High Risk Doctrines
Divine Calling and Commissioning
Mandarin name: 神对先知的呼召与差遣
Key terms: called, calling_commissioning
Review routing: Human theologian
Isaiah’s ‘here am I, send me’ models a personal, relational summons; must be kept distinct from 天命 (Mandate of Heaven), the classical Chinese impersonal cosmic mandate legitimizing rulers, consistent with the baseline’s Divine Calling doctrine note.
Purification Before Divine Service
Mandarin name: 蒙洁净方能事奉
Key terms: sanctification, sin, iniquity
Review routing: Human theologian
The burning-coal purification of Isaiah’s lips must be taught as God’s sovereign purifying act preceding commissioning, not a ritual self-purification technique (清净) or Neo-Confucian self-cultivation (修身), consistent with baseline Sanctification note.
Judgment on Israel’s Idolatry and Injustice
Mandarin name: 对以色列拜偶像与不义的审判
Key terms: idols, rebellion, justice_social, sin
Review routing: Human theologian
Isaiah’s idol polemic (偶像) targets image-worship as a rival to God, not ancestor-veneration (祭祖) generally; conflating the two would either blunt the doctrine’s force or wrongly weaponize it against filial ancestor-honoring practice. The mishpat-tsedaqah pairing (公义) must be taught as the social outworking of God’s own righteous character, not a separable secular-ethics category.
The Messianic Branch and Davidic Lineage
Mandarin name: 弥赛亚的苗与大卫的血统
Key terms: messianic_branch, root_of_jesse, seed_of_david
Review routing: Human theologian
The unified Branch/Root motif (苗/枝子/根) must never be rendered with 化身 (bodhisattva-manifestation), which implies a temporary, repeatable divine appearance rather than a genuine, once-for-all lineage fulfillment culminating in the Suffering Servant.
The Davidic Covenant
Mandarin name: 大卫之约
Key terms: davidic_covenant_lovingkindness, covenant, david
Review routing: Human theologian
Requires OT background explanation; no directly analogous concept of a perpetual, unconditional royal covenant promise exists in Chinese dynastic tradition, where legitimacy rests on a revocable Mandate of Heaven rather than an unconditional promise to one line.
Servant of the LORD — Corporate and Individual
Mandarin name: 耶和华的仆人——群体与个人
Key terms: servant_of_the_lord
Review routing: Human theologian
The referent shift from corporate Israel to an individual redemptive figure is a genuine interpretive question and must be flagged per occurrence rather than resolved silently; 耶和华的仆人 must never carry a 大师/宗师 guru-lineage connotation.
Comfort and Restoration for God’s People
Mandarin name: 神子民的安慰与复兴
Key terms: comfort, remnant, voice_crying_in_wilderness, highway_of_holiness, maker_is_husband
Review routing: Human theologian
安慰 is a personal, relational consolation from God himself, not stoic self-soothing (自我安慰) or fatalistic resignation. 你的丈夫 covenant-marriage imagery must be distinguished from any fertility-cult ‘sacred marriage’ association present in surrounding folk-religious frameworks.
Inspiration and Permanence of God’s Word
Mandarin name: 神话语的默示与永存
Key terms: word_of_god_endures, prophecy
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be distinguished from the Chinese classical canon (经, jīng), authoritative as sage-wisdom, rather than as the direct, verbal communication of a personal God through human authors, per the baseline’s Inspiration of Scripture doctrine note.
Salvation Extended to the Nations
Mandarin name: 救恩延及万国
Key terms: light_to_the_nations, house_of_prayer_for_all_nations, sabbath, all_flesh_shall_worship, gentiles_nations
Review routing: Human theologian
外邦人 must never be rendered 夷人 (historic ‘barbarian,’ the Hua-Yi civilized/outsider distinction), which would re-import the very insider/outsider hierarchy these texts dismantle. 安息日 must not be rendered with 斋戒日, which would suggest a merit-earning ritual fast rather than a covenant sign of relationship extended to foreigners.
The Gospel Proclamation Rooted in Isaiah
Mandarin name: 源自以赛亚书的福音宣告
Key terms: good_news_tidings, messiah_self_anointing
Review routing: Native speaker review
报好信 must align with the baseline’s Medium-risk 福音 term for cross-testament consistency with Romans 10:15’s direct quotation of Isaiah 52:7; divergence would obscure Paul’s citation as continuous with Isaiah’s prophecy rather than a novel concept.
The New Heavens and New Earth
Mandarin name: 新天新地
Key terms: new_heavens_and_new_earth, unquenchable_fire, latter_days
Review routing: Human theologian
新天新地 must never be rendered 新一劫, which would suggest a recurring Buddhist/Daoist cosmic cycle (劫) rather than a single, final, non-repeating consummation. 永不熄灭的火 must never suggest the temporary, karmically-determined Buddhist hell-realms (地狱) from which a being may eventually be reborn out; biblical judgment here is final and unending.
God’s Providence over His People (Potter and Clay)
Mandarin name: 神对子民护理(窑匠与泥)
Key terms: providence, potter_and_clay
Review routing: Human theologian
窑匠与泥 must retain the personal, purposive shaping relationship, never collapsing into an impersonal fatalistic image of being molded by fate (命运), consistent with the baseline’s Providence doctrine note against 天意 alone.
Medium Risk Doctrines
The Day of the LORD
Mandarin name: 耶和华的日子
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, day_of_vengeance
Review routing: Native speaker review
Must be distinguished from Chinese astrological ‘auspicious day’ selection culture (黄道吉日); this is a personal, sovereign act of God’s judgment/salvation, not a fortuitous calendar date.
Fear of the LORD as Covenant Reverence
Mandarin name: 敬畏耶和华
Key terms: fear_of_the_lord
Review routing: Native speaker review
敬畏耶和华 must be distinguished from superstitious fear of ghosts/spirits (怕鬼) common in Chinese folk religion; this is reverent covenant awe toward the one true God, not dread of a capricious spirit-world.
The Cornerstone and the Stumbling Stone
Mandarin name: 房角石与绊脚石
Key terms: precious_cornerstone, stone_of_stumbling
Review routing: Native speaker review
房角石 must be distinguished from Chinese fengshui (风水) cornerstone-laying rituals performed for good fortune; this cornerstone secures salvation through faith, not geomantic luck, and the same divine reality is either foundation or stumbling-block depending on response.
True Worship Versus Ritual Without Justice
Mandarin name: 真实的敬拜与缺乏公义的仪式
Key terms: true_fasting, sabbath, justice_social
Review routing: Native speaker review
禁食/安息日 must not be taught as merit-earning ritual observances (斋戒-style Buddhist/Daoist practice); Isaiah 58 explicitly redefines true fasting as inseparable from justice and mercy, flowing from covenant relationship rather than earning it.
