Baseline Terms Reused Exactly (from Romans translation_memory.json)

These terms recur in Esther-curriculum teaching/doctrine material (though several do not appear as direct lexical items in the Hebrew Esther text itself, since Esther never names God). Reuse the recorded Mandarin rendering with zero deviation.

English TermMandarin (BASELINE)PinyinRisk (baseline)Note for Esther Curriculum
GodShénCriticalNever appears by name in the Hebrew MT of Esther — doctrine and teaching material must discuss God’s action using this term while explicitly modeling the text’s own restraint (see #14, #16 above).
Providence神的护理Shén de hùlǐHigh (flag as effectively Critical in this curriculum’s context)Esther is this curriculum’s paradigm case for the doctrine; because the underlying text never asserts God’s agency directly, teaching material must present providence as inferred, matching the book’s own restraint, more so than any Romans passage requires.
Salvation救恩jiùēnCriticalMUST be kept distinct from Esther’s historical/physical “deliverance” (#13 above, 解救/拯救). Use only when discussing the NT antitype in explicitly typological framing.
Faith信心xìnxīnHighNot a lexical item in Hebrew Esther (the word never occurs), but relevant to teaching material contrasting Esther’s action-oriented courage with explicit NT “faith” vocabulary — do not retroactively insert 信心 into narrative renderings of Esther’s decision itself.
Grace恩典ēndiǎnCriticalMust NOT be used for Esther’s “court favor” (#4 above); reserved exclusively for unmerited divine salvific grace.
Law律法lǜfǎHighMust NOT be used for Persian dat (#1 above); reserved exclusively for the Mosaic Law.
Gentiles外邦人wàibāngrénMediumUse with caution in Esther teaching material: Esther’s Persian imperial context involves many subject “peoples” (ammim) under one empire, a broader category than the Romans Jew/Gentile theological binary. Prefer 各族 / 万民 for generic imperial-subject-peoples language; reserve 外邦人 for genuine Jew/non-Jew theological contrasts only.
Israel以色列YǐsèlièMediumNot directly named in Esther (the term “Jews,” יְהוּדִים, Yóutàirén 犹大人/猶太人, is used instead) — do not substitute 以色列 for 犹大人 in translation; they are not interchangeable in this book.
Glory荣耀róngyàoHighSee #22 above — direct cross-curriculum collision risk with human court-honor language in Esther 6, 10. Requires disambiguating teaching note wherever CUV’s own usage brings the two into contact.

Summary of Highest-Priority Risk Items for Phase 1 Step 2 (Doctrine Risk Registry)

  1. מָקוֹם אַחֵר / “another place” (#14) — the ambiguity itself must be preserved; Critical.
  2. מִי יוֹדֵעַ / “who knows” (#16) — rhetorical restraint must be preserved; High.
  3. פּוּרִים / Purim (#8) and וְנַהֲפוֹךְ הוּא / reversal (#26) — doctrinal anchors for Reversal doctrine; Critical.
  4. רֶוַח וְהַצָּלָה / deliverance (#13) vs. baseline 救恩 — must not conflate historical deliverance with eternal salvation; Critical.
  5. דָּת / decree (#1) vs. baseline 律法 — must not conflate Persian edict with Mosaic Law; High.
  6. חֵן / favor (#4) vs. baseline 恩典 — must not conflate court favor with salvific grace; High.
  7. כָּבוֹד/יְקָר / honor (#22) vs. baseline 荣耀 — cross-curriculum collision with Deity-of-Christ glory language; High.
  8. מִתְיַהֲדִים / “became Jews” (#25) — must not be rendered with soteriological conversion vocabulary; High.
  9. “我若死就死吧” (#19) — fixed phrase, verbatim consistency required; Critical.

This glossary feeds directly into Phase 1 Step 2 (doctrine_risk_registry.json extension for Esther) and Phase 1 Step 3 (translation_memory.json term intake). All NEW terms above require formal ratification before Phase 2 translation begins.

Critical Risk Terms

God

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: Shén
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 上帝, 天, 老天爷
Original: (never named directly in the Hebrew MT of Esther)
Category: God

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] This Language Package standardizes on 神 (the CUV ‘Shen edition’ reading) rather than 上帝 (Shàngdì), per the unresolved 19th-century ‘Term Question.’ NEVER use 天 (tiān, impersonal Heaven) or 老天爷 (‘Old Man Heaven’) alone. 神 is also the common noun for any deity/spirit; doctrinal contexts must make monotheism explicit. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: 神 never appears by name in the Hebrew MT of Esther. Teaching commentary may use 神 to name the doctrine of Hidden Providence, but 神 (or 神的护理) must NEVER be inserted into narrative renderings of the book’s own ambiguous phrases — 别处 (‘another place,’ 4:14) and 焉知 (‘who knows,’ 4:14) — where the Hebrew deliberately withholds direct naming. This is the paradigm case in this curriculum for preserving textual restraint rather than an explicit theological assertion; any draft inserting 神 into these verses’ narrative text must be auto-flagged for human theologian review.

Salvation

Approved rendering: 救恩
Transliteration: jiùēn
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 解脱, 超度, 得道
Original: (theological category; contrast with רֶוַח וְהַצָּלָה, revach v’hatzalah, Esther 4:14)
Category: Salvation

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] NEVER use 解脱 (Buddhist liberation from samsara) or 超度 (a posthumous rite for the dead). Salvation is deliverance from sin’s guilt and God’s wrath through Christ, received by faith in this life. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: must be kept strictly distinct from Esther’s historical, physical deliverance (解救/拯救, Esther 4:14; 9:1-16). Use 救恩 only when discussing the NT antitype in explicitly typological framing, per the Reversal (Purim) doctrine; never as a direct rendering of any Esther-text deliverance language, and never presented as identical to it.

Grace

Approved rendering: 恩典
Transliteration: ēndiǎn
Doctrine: Grace
Rejected alternatives: 功德, 造化, 福气, 阴德
Original: (theological category; contrast with חֵן/חֶסֶד, chen/chesed, Esther 2:9 etc.)
Category: Salvation

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] NEVER use 功德 or 阴德 — Buddhist/folk merit-accounting concepts. 恩典 must be taught as unearned favor apart from merit-accounting. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: must NOT be used for Esther’s court favor (חֵן/חֶסֶד, rendered 恩宠/宠爱, e.g. 2:9, 2:15, 5:2, 8:5); reserved exclusively for unmerited divine salvific grace. The golden scepter (金杖, 4:11, 5:2) is royal clemency, not covenantal grace, and must not be described with 恩典-family vocabulary.

Righteousness

Approved rendering:
Transliteration:
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: 道德, 善行

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] 义 is also a Confucian Five Constant Virtue — a social-ethical duty of rightness cultivated by moral effort — distinct from forensic right standing received by faith. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: this Hebrew word does not occur in Esther, but the doctrine surfaces indirectly in comparative-theology discussion of Courage and Risk for God’s People. Confucian 义-virtue framing must never be used to present Esther’s courage (4:16) as merit-earning virtue-cultivation; her risk is voluntary and unrewarded-by-guarantee, not a performance of covenantal 义.

Purim

Approved rendering: 普珥 / 普珥节
Transliteration: Pǔ’ěr / Pǔ’ěr Jié
Doctrine: Reversal (Purim)
Original: פּוּר / פּוּרִים
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders פּוּר / פּוּרִים (pur/purim), a Persian loanword for a cast lot; Haman uses it to fatalistically select a massacre date (3:7), and the plural becomes the festival name commemorating the reversal (9:26). Critical anchor for the whole Reversal doctrine. Transliterate consistently across chs. 3 and 9; no substitution or paraphrase permitted. Semantically opaque to Mandarin readers without mandatory teaching-note glossing — an accepted, necessary gap, not a translation defect.

Destruction Triad

Approved rendering: 剪除,杀戮,灭绝
Transliteration: jiǎnchú, shālù, mièjué
Doctrine: Deliverance from Annihilation
Original: לְהַשְׁמִיד וְלַהֲרוֹג וּלְאַבֵּד
Category: Deliverance from Annihilation

Renders לְהַשְׁמִיד וְלַהֲרוֹג וּלְאַבֵּד (3:13), three near-synonymous destruction verbs stacked as rhetorical totality. Retain all three distinctly; do NOT collapse to one term for stylistic economy — the stacking names a literal, empire-wide genocide, not a metaphorical threat. The counter-decree (8:11-13) should mirror this same triple structure so the reversal reads as a true reversal, not a softened new edict.

Relief And Deliverance

Approved rendering: 解救 / 拯救
Transliteration: jiějiù / zhěngjiù
Doctrine: Deliverance from Annihilation
Rejected alternatives: 救恩
Original: רֶוַח וְהַצָּלָה
Category: Deliverance from Annihilation

Renders רֶוַח וְהַצָּלָה (revach v’hatzalah, 4:14), the closest the Hebrew MT comes to naming a rescuing agent without naming God. Must be sharply distinguished from baseline 救恩 (eternal soteriological salvation) — Esther’s deliverance is historical and physical. May be taught as a typological pattern anticipating the gospel but must never be flatly identified with 救恩. CUV anchor: 得解救.

Another Place

Approved rendering: 别处
Transliteration: biéchù
Doctrine: Hidden Providence
Rejected alternatives: 从神那里
Original: מָקוֹם אַחֵר
Category: Hidden Providence

Renders מָקוֹם אַחֵר (maqom acher, 4:14), a deliberate euphemism for God at the moment of highest theological tension in the book. THE AMBIGUITY IS THEOLOGICALLY LOAD-BEARING and MUST NOT be resolved into an explicit divine reference (从神那里) in the rendered text. Any draft inserting 神 or explicit divine-agency phrasing here must be auto-flagged for mandatory human theologian review, with no exception. Interpretive tradition notes belong in translator/teaching commentary only, never the rendered text.

If I Perish I Perish

Approved rendering: 我若死就死吧
Transliteration: wǒ ruò sǐ jiù sǐ ba
Doctrine: Courage and Risk for God’s People
Original: וְכַאֲשֶׁר אֹבֵד אֹבָדְתִּי
Category: Courage and Risk

Renders וְכַאֲשֶׁר אֹבֵד אֹבָדְתִּי (4:16), the doctrinal climax of the core passage. Established, memorized CUV phrase — reuse VERBATIM across all Phase 2 materials with NO paraphrase, parallel to the Romans baseline’s ‘耶稣是主’ consistency rule. Shares a root-echo with ‘perish’ (灭亡) at 3:13/4:14: Esther individualizes the community’s threatened fate as her own.

Reversal

Approved rendering: 逆转 / 反转 (doctrinal); 反倒 (in-text, per CUV)
Transliteration: nìzhuǎn / fǎnzhuǎn; fǎndào
Doctrine: Reversal (Purim)
Original: וְנַהֲפוֹךְ הוּא
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders וְנַהֲפוֹךְ הוּא (v’nahafokh hu, 9:1), the single most theologically important verb in the book, again with no narrated divine agent. Use 逆转/反转 in doctrinal teaching material; narrative-text may follow CUV’s contextual 反倒. Every doctrinal occurrence MUST use explicit 类型/预表 (‘pattern/type’) language, never ‘is’/identity language, when connecting to the gospel — avoiding supersessionist flattening of Esther’s own historical Jewish deliverance. Escalate to mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence. Caution: 逆转 is common in modern sports/business commentary (‘comeback’); frame so learners do not read the doctrine as merely an underdog story.

High Risk Terms

Providence

Approved rendering: 神的护理
Transliteration: Shén de hùlǐ
Doctrine: Providence
Rejected alternatives: 天意, 命运
Original: (theological category for Esther 2:21-23, 4:14, 6:1-3, 9:1; cf. Romans 8:28’s πρόνοια)
Category: God

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] NEVER use 天意 (‘heaven’s intention’) alone — an impersonal, fatalistic everyday Chinese phrase. God’s providence is his personal, purposive governance of all things, not an impersonal cosmic will. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: Esther is this curriculum’s paradigm case for the doctrine of Hidden Providence. Because the underlying Hebrew never asserts God’s agency directly, this term’s PRACTICAL risk in Esther is effectively Critical even though its baseline tier remains High: it must NEVER be inserted into in-text narrative renderings of the ambiguous narrative itself (4:14, 6:1-3, 9:1) and is reserved strictly for surrounding teaching commentary, clearly marked as the reader’s/teacher’s theological inference rather than the text’s own assertion.

Faith

Approved rendering: 信心
Transliteration: xìnxīn
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: 虔诚, 迷信, 信仰
Original: (theological category; not a lexical item in Hebrew Esther)
Category: Faith

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] Personal trust placed in Christ specifically; object of faith must be stated in context. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: this Hebrew word never occurs in Esther. Relevant only to teaching material contrasting Esther’s action-oriented courage with explicit NT ‘faith’ vocabulary; do NOT retroactively insert 信心 into narrative renderings of Esther’s decision at 4:16, which the text frames through resolve and risk-acceptance (我若死就死吧), not an explicit faith-vocabulary claim.

Law

Approved rendering: 律法
Transliteration: lǜfǎ
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: 礼, 道德规范, 法律
Original: (theological category; contrast with דָּת, dat, Esther 1:8 etc.)
Category: Covenant

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] The Mosaic Law. NEVER equate with 礼 (Confucian ritual propriety) or use 法律 (secular civil law). Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: must NOT be used for the Persian court decree (דָּת, dat, rendered 谕旨/法令 throughout chs. 1, 3, 4, 8, 9); reserved exclusively for the Mosaic covenant law. Using 律法 for dat would falsely elevate an arbitrary imperial edict to the status of God’s revealed covenant law.

Glory

Approved rendering: 荣耀
Transliteration: róngyào
Doctrine: Deity of Christ
Rejected alternatives: 面子, 光宗耀祖
Original: (theological category; contrast with כָּבוֹד/יְקָר, kavod/yekar, Esther 6, 10)
Category: God

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] Avoid collapsing into 面子 (face/social reputation) or 光宗耀祖 (ancestral honor). Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: direct, lexically UNAVOIDABLE cross-curriculum collision — CUV itself uses 荣耀 for Mordecai’s bestowed human court-honor (כָּבוֹד/יְקָר, 6:1-11, 10:2-3), the identical character string reserved here for God’s own intrinsic divine glory. Every Esther occurrence requires an explicit disambiguating co-text clause (e.g. ‘此处的荣耀是人间朝廷所赐的尊荣,并非神本身的荣耀’); prefer 尊荣 in newly drafted, non-CUV-citation teaching prose.

Royal Decree

Approved rendering: 谕旨 / 法令
Transliteration: yùzhǐ / fǎlìng
Doctrine: Human Authority and Its Limits
Rejected alternatives: 律法
Original: דָּת
Category: Court and Empire

Renders דָּת (dat), a Persian imperial edict/statute, distinct from covenant law. Must NOT use 律法 — reserved exclusively for the Mosaic Law. Occurs 1:8, 1:19, 3:9-15, 4:3, 4:8, 4:11, 4:16, 8:5-17, 9:1, 9:13-14; the SAME mechanism structures both the genocidal decree (ch.3) and its reversal (ch.8) — consistency required across all occurrences. Use 谕旨 for the king’s personal command register (chs. 1, 3) and 法令 for its codified, unalterable-once-issued legal force (1:19, 8:8) as CONTEXTUAL variants of one protected term, not free alternatives.

Court Favor

Approved rendering: 恩宠 / 宠爱
Transliteration: ēnchǒng / chǒng’ài
Doctrine: Hidden Providence
Rejected alternatives: 恩典
Original: חֵן / חֶסֶד
Category: Hidden Providence

Renders חֵן / חֶסֶד (chen/chesed) in its thinned court-favor sense (2:9, 2:15, 2:17, 5:2, 5:8, 7:3, 8:5). Must NOT use 恩典 — reserved exclusively for unmerited divine salvific grace. Esther’s rise depends on a human-favor chain (Hegai→king) the narrative never explicitly attributes to God; conflating with 恩典 would collapse Hidden Providence’s deliberate restraint into an asserted divine-grace claim.

Bow Down

Approved rendering: 跪拜
Transliteration: guìbài
Doctrine: Faithfulness in a Foreign Culture
Rejected alternatives: 敬拜
Original: הִשְׁתַּחֲוָה
Category: Faithfulness in a Foreign Culture

Renders הִשְׁתַּחֲוָה (hishtachavah, 3:2, 3:5), spanning ordinary court obeisance to worship, distinguished only by context. Use 跪拜 (bow/prostration), NOT 敬拜 (‘worship’) — the Hebrew never states Mordecai’s refusal is motivated by fear of idolatry, and 敬拜 would over-specify a motive the text leaves ambiguous. Note that 跪拜 carries ancestor/idol-veneration resonance for Mandarin readers (跪拜祖先, 跪拜神像) — a feature to be explored in teaching commentary, not resolved in the rendering itself.

Perish

Approved rendering: 灭亡
Transliteration: mièwáng
Doctrine: Deliverance from Annihilation
Original: אָבַד
Category: Deliverance from Annihilation

Renders אָבַד (avad), appearing in the destruction-triad (3:13), Mordecai’s warning (4:14), and Esther’s resolve (4:16). Fix ONE Mandarin rendering (灭亡) identically across all three occurrences to preserve the Hebrew’s deliberate root-repetition; varying the rendering across chapters for stylistic reasons would break this intentional literary echo.

Who Knows

Approved rendering: 焉知
Transliteration: yān zhī
Doctrine: Hidden Providence
Rejected alternatives: 神一定安排
Original: מִי יוֹדֵעַ
Category: Hidden Providence

Renders מִי יוֹדֵעַ (mi yode’a, 4:14), a rhetorical question of epistemic humility, not certainty (cf. Joel 2:14, Jonah 3:9). Retain CUV’s 焉知 exactly. Do NOT upgrade to an assertive form such as ‘神一定安排,’ which imports certainty the Hebrew deliberately withholds. Paradigm case distinguishing ‘hidden’ providence (inferred, humble) from ‘asserted’ providence (explicit, as in Romans 8:28).

Honor

Approved rendering: 荣耀 (CUV) / 尊荣 (disambiguating alt.)
Transliteration: róngyào / zūnróng
Doctrine: Honor Reversal and Exaltation of the Lowly
Original: כָּבוֹד / יְקָר
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders כָּבוֹד / יְקָר (6:1-11, 10:2-3), purely human court-honor. CUV renders this with 荣耀 in places, the SAME term the Romans baseline reserves for God’s divine glory (δόξα). This is the ONE lexically unavoidable cross-curriculum collision in the Language Package. Retain 荣耀 where CUV-established, but require an explicit co-text disambiguating clause in every teaching occurrence; default to 尊荣 in newly drafted, non-CUV-citation prose.

Became Jews

Approved rendering: 入了猶太籍
Transliteration: rù le Yóutài jí
Doctrine: Ambiguous Identity and Assimilation
Rejected alternatives: 信主, 得救, 归主
Original: מִתְיַהֲדִים
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders מִתְיַהֲדִים (mityahadim, 8:17), ambiguous between sincere identification and pragmatic political alignment. CUV shows deliberate restraint (入了猶太籍, civic/ethnic ‘registry/citizenship’ term, not conversion). MUST be preserved: do NOT render with 信主/得救/归主 or any construction implying 信心/救恩. 籍 carries a modern administrative-legal register (户籍, 国籍); supply a teaching note against anachronistic reading.

Medium Risk Terms

Gentiles

Approved rendering: 外邦人
Transliteration: wàibāngrén
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Rejected alternatives: 夷人, 外国人
Original: (theological category; contrast with עַמִּים, ammim, ‘peoples,’ throughout Esther)
Category: Church

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] NEVER use 夷人 (historic ‘barbarian,’ Hua-Yi distinction). 外邦人 = non-Jewish nations generically. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: use with care. Esther’s Persian imperial setting involves many subject peoples (עַמִּים, ammim) under one empire — a broader category than the Romans Jew/Gentile binary. Prefer 各族 / 万民 for generic imperial-subject-peoples narrative language (1:1, 1:22, 3:8, 8:9); reserve 外邦人 strictly for genuine Jew/non-Jew theological contrasts in teaching material.

Israel

Approved rendering: 以色列
Transliteration: Yǐsèliè
Doctrine: Unity of Jews and Gentiles
Original: (proper name; not used in Esther, which uses יְהוּדִים, ‘Jews,’ instead)
Category: Covenant

[ROMANS BASELINE — INHERITED EXACTLY] Proper name; CUV established form. Inherited from Romans package. ESTHER-SPECIFIC CAUTION: not directly named in Esther, which uses יְהוּדִים (‘Jews,’ 犹大人/猶太人) throughout instead. Do NOT substitute 以色列 for 犹大人/猶太人 in translation; the two terms are not interchangeable in this book.

Guardian Care

Approved rendering: 抚养
Transliteration: fǔyǎng
Doctrine: Faithfulness in a Foreign Culture
Rejected alternatives: 儿子的名分, 过继
Original: אָמַן
Category: Faithfulness in a Foreign Culture

Renders אָמַן (aman, 2:7), Mordecai’s ordinary kinship guardianship of Esther. Must NOT use 儿子的名分 or 过继 — Romans-baseline ‘adoption’ terms reserved for the believer’s placement as heir-son of God (Romans 8:15). Mordecai’s care is mundane kinship guardianship, not a theological adoption event.

Agagite

Approved rendering: 亚甲族人
Transliteration: Yàjiǎ zúrén
Doctrine: Ancient Covenant-Historical Enmity
Original: אֲגָגִי
Category: Deliverance from Annihilation

Renders אֲגָגִי (Agagi, 3:1, 3:10), identifying Haman as a descendant of Agag, king of Amalek (cf. 1 Samuel 15), placing the Haman-Mordecai conflict in the line of Saul’s ancient enmity with Amalek. Requires a mandatory teaching note supplying the 1 Samuel 15 background; without it Mandarin readers have no independent access to this intertextual signal.

Enemy Of The Jews

Approved rendering: 犹大人的仇敌
Transliteration: Yóutàirén de chóudí
Doctrine: Deliverance from Annihilation
Original: צֹרֵר הַיְּהוּדִים
Category: Deliverance from Annihilation

Renders צֹרֵר הַיְּהוּדִים, a formal narratorial title for Haman (3:10, 8:1, 9:10, 9:24) marking corporate, not merely personal, adversity. Retain as a fixed epithet identically at every occurrence.

Sackcloth Ashes

Approved rendering: 麻衣 / (蒙)灰
Transliteration: máyī / (méng) huī
Doctrine: Intercessory Fasting and Corporate Lament
Original: שַׂק / אֵפֶר
Category: Courage and Risk

Renders שַׂק / אֵפֶר (4:1, 4:3), standard OT public mourning/alarm ritual. Present as mourning/lament, not repentance-from-sin — the text supplies no causal link between the crisis and any wrongdoing by the Jews.

Escape

Approved rendering: 逃脱
Transliteration: táotuō
Doctrine: Corporate Solidarity of God’s People
Original: נִמְלֶטֶת (root מלט)
Category: Faithfulness in a Foreign Culture

Renders נִמְלֶטֶת (root מלט, 4:13), personal escape from danger. Must remain lexically distinct from ‘relief and deliverance’ below (root נצל) — the Deliverance doctrine depends on readers tracking personal escape (4:13) and corporate deliverance (4:14) as related but not identical concepts. Anchors Mordecai’s warning that Esther cannot personally escape her people’s fate.

Such A Time As This

Approved rendering: 现今的机会
Transliteration: xiànjīn de jīhuì
Doctrine: Courage and Risk for God’s People
Original: כְּעֵת הַזֹּאת
Category: Courage and Risk

Renders כְּעֵת הַזֹּאת (ke’et hazzot, 4:14), completing the literary bracket begun in 4:13’s ‘this crisis.’ Render consistently with 4:13’s parallel phrase. CUV’s 机会 carries a secular business/career register in contemporary Mandarin that risks under-conveying divinely-shaped timing — the curriculum’s highest-probability silent-drift risk; route to mandatory native speaker register review before Phase 2 lock-in. Grammatically bound to the humble ‘who knows’ question, not an independent assertion of certainty.

Fasting

Approved rendering: 禁食
Transliteration: jìnshí
Doctrine: Intercessory Fasting and Corporate Lament
Rejected alternatives: 斋戒, 禁食祷告
Original: צוֹם
Category: Courage and Risk

Renders צוֹם (tsom, 4:16), total abstention from food/drink as urgent petition/lament. The Hebrew MT records the ACTION without an accompanying prayer, unlike the non-canonical Greek LXX Addition C. Preserve this silence in-text; do NOT add ‘禁食祷告’ where the underlying clause has no prayer. Avoid 斋戒, which carries Buddhist/Daoist ritual-purification and merit-generation connotations. Teaching commentary may supply the LXX/traditional inference, clearly marked as extra-canonical background.

Gallows

Approved rendering: 木架
Transliteration: mùjià
Doctrine: Reversal (Purim)
Rejected alternatives: 十字架
Original: עֵץ
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders עֵץ (ets, ‘wood/tree’), the execution stake built for Mordecai (5:14) later used on Haman (7:10) — the book’s clearest embedded reversal image. May be taught as an illustrative homiletical pattern toward the gospel’s reversal-through-an-instrument-of-death, but must be framed as typological application only; never insert NT cross/atonement vocabulary (十字架) into the narrative rendering. Maintain lexical consistency across 5:14 and 7:9-10.

Chronicles

Approved rendering: 宫廷记录 / 编年史
Transliteration: gōngtíng jìlù / biānniánshǐ
Doctrine: Providential Timing in Ordinary Events
Rejected alternatives: 历代志
Original: סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים
Category: Hidden Providence

Renders סֵפֶר דִּבְרֵי הַיָּמִים, a secular Persian royal administrative record (2:23, 6:1, 10:2). Must NOT use 历代志 — the fixed CUV name for the biblical books of 1-2 Chronicles; using it would falsely suggest Esther cites Scripture. Confirm identical rendering across all three occurrences at final QA — the detail that this exact scroll is read to a sleepless king is a key Hidden Providence data-point.

Light And Gladness

Approved rendering: 光明和喜乐
Transliteration: guāngmíng hé xǐlè
Doctrine: Reversal (Purim)
Original: אוֹר וְשִׂמְחָה
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders אוֹר וְשִׂמְחָה (8:16), a stock OT idiom-pair for relief and celebration marking the book’s emotional turning point. A general biblical joy-image; may be connected illustratively to later biblical light-imagery (John 1) in teaching commentary only, never imported into the Esther text as an explicit theological claim.

Rest

Approved rendering: 得享安宁 / 太平
Transliteration: dé xiǎng ānníng / tàipíng
Doctrine: Reversal (Purim)
Original: מְנוּחָה / נוֹח
Category: Reversal (Purim)

Renders מְנוּחָה / נוֹח (9:17-18). Ordinary rest-from-danger language with root-family resonance to broader OT ‘rest’ theology, without being a technical Sabbath/land-rest citation. Avoid over-claiming direct Sabbath-typology without separate exegetical support.

Golden Scepter

Approved rendering: 金杖
Transliteration: jīnzhàng
Doctrine: Hidden Providence
Rejected alternatives: 恩典
Original: שַׁרְבִיט הַזָּהָב
Category: Hidden Providence

Renders שַׁרְבִיט הַזָּהָב (4:11, 5:2), royal mercy sparing a forfeit life. A human king’s arbitrary clemency, a faint non-theological echo of the far greater unearned mercy the book never names. Resist over-typologizing into 恩典-family vocabulary; it is royal clemency, not covenantal grace.

Jews

Approved rendering: 犹大人 / 猶太人
Transliteration: Yóutàirén
Doctrine: Deliverance from Annihilation
Rejected alternatives: 以色列
Original: יְהוּדִים
Category: Deliverance from Annihilation

Renders יְהוּדִים (Yehudim), the covenant people’s designation throughout Esther rather than ‘Israel.’ Do NOT substitute 以色列 for this term; the ethnic-corporate identity it carries is the direct object of both the threatened annihilation and the subsequent deliverance.

Low Risk Terms

Banquet

Approved rendering: 筵席
Transliteration: yánxí
Doctrine: Court and Empire
Original: מִשְׁתֶּה
Category: Court and Empire

Renders מִשְׁתֶּה (mishteh), royal/festive drinking-feast. Track consistently across 1:1-9, 2:18, 5:4-8, 7:1-8, 9:17-19 to preserve the literary bracket between royal excess (ch.1) and deliverance-joy (ch.9).

Eunuch

Approved rendering: 内侍
Transliteration: nèishì
Doctrine: Court and Empire
Rejected alternatives: 仆人, 太监
Original: סָרִיס
Category: Court and Empire

Renders סָרִיס (saris), a castrated royal official with privileged palace access (Hathach, Hegai, Harbona). Avoid flattening to generic 仆人 (‘servant’), which loses the detail of functioning inner-court access. 太监 imports dynastic-Chinese-court coloring; 内侍 is the preferred neutral formal register.

Wrath

Approved rendering: 震怒 / 忿怒
Transliteration: zhènnù / fènnù
Doctrine: Court and Empire
Rejected alternatives: 报应
Original: קָצַף / חֵמָה
Category: Court and Empire

Renders קָצַף / חֵמָה (7:7-10), ordinary royal/human anger, not a technical divine-wrath term. No baseline collision at present; flag for consistency with any future divine-wrath vocabulary. Must not be conflated with 报应 (karmic retribution) in Divine Justice discussion.

Sending Of Portions

Approved rendering: 彼此馈送礼物
Transliteration: bǐcǐ kuìsòng lǐwù
Doctrine: Purim Celebration and Generosity
Rejected alternatives: 红包
Original: מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת
Category: Community Ethics

Renders מִשְׁלוֹחַ מָנוֹת (9:19, 9:22), the friend-to-friend Purim food-gift custom. Do NOT render as 红包 (Chinese New Year cash-gift custom) — a different ritual meaning (luck, ancestral blessing) that would import an unrelated folk-custom frame.

Gifts To The Poor

Approved rendering: 赒济穷人
Transliteration: zhōujì qióngrén
Doctrine: Purim Celebration and Generosity
Original: מַתָּנוֹת לָאֶבְיֹנִים
Category: Community Ethics

Renders מַתָּנוֹת לָאֶבְיֹנִים (9:22), a distinct Purim custom of giving to the needy, separate from mishloach manot. Maintain as lexically distinct from 彼此馈送礼物.

King

Approved rendering:
Transliteration: wáng
Doctrine: Human Authority and Its Limits

Renders מֶלֶךְ (melek), the human Persian king Ahasuerus. No baseline collision: 王 is never used for God or Christ in the CUV tradition, so no confusion with baseline 主 (Lord). This real but ultimately subordinate human authority operates under an unstated higher governance; do not inflate 王 with covenantal or divine overtones.

Esther

Approved rendering: 以斯帖
Transliteration: Yǐsītiè
Doctrine: Names
Original: אֶסְתֵּר
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration. Possible etymological link to Hebrew √סתר (‘to hide’) is thematically resonant with, though etymologically debated relative to, her concealed identity and the Hidden Providence theme — flag as suggestive, not asserted, in teaching notes.

Mordecai

Approved rendering: 末底改
Transliteration: Mòdǐgǎi
Doctrine: Names
Original: מָרְדֳּכַי
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration. A Benjamite descendant of Kish (2:5), placing him in the line of Saul’s ancient enmity with Amalek/Agag.

Ahasuerus

Approved rendering: 亚哈随鲁
Transliteration: Yàhāsuílǔ
Doctrine: Names
Original: אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; identified with Xerxes I.

Haman

Approved rendering: 哈曼
Transliteration: Hāmán
Doctrine: Names
Original: הָמָן
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; see ‘agagite’ entry for the theological weight of his lineage.

Vashti

Approved rendering: 瓦实提
Transliteration: Wǎshítí
Doctrine: Names
Original: וַשְׁתִּי
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; the queen deposed in ch.1, whose removal creates the vacancy Esther later fills.

Hegai

Approved rendering: 希该
Transliteration: Xīgāi
Doctrine: Names
Original: הֵגַי
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; the king’s eunuch in charge of the women, who shows Esther favor (恩宠/宠爱, 2:9).

Hathach

Approved rendering: 哈他革
Transliteration: Hātǎgé
Doctrine: Names
Original: הֲתָךְ
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; the royal eunuch serving as trusted go-between for Esther and Mordecai in the core passage (4:5-10); do not flatten his role to generic 仆人.

Zeresh

Approved rendering: 细利斯
Transliteration: Xìlìsī
Doctrine: Names
Original: זֶרֶש
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; Haman’s wife.

Susa

Approved rendering: 书珊
Transliteration: Shūshān
Doctrine: Names
Original: שׁוּשָׁן
Category: Names

Established CUV transliteration; the Persian capital city where the book’s events take place.
