Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — Gospel of John (English–Mandarin)
Purpose
This document provides the full doctrine matrix for the Gospel of John (chapters 1–21), anchored theologically in the core passage John 3:1–21 but scoped to the entire book per the PRD Phase 1 full-book coverage mandate. It is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json: the same 33 doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing are used throughout. This document adds the supporting-passage detail, translation-risk rationale, and full chapter-by-chapter coverage trace that the registry’s JSON schema does not itself display in narrative form.
Risk tiers (identical to baseline and registry definitions):
- Critical — Human theologian review required for every occurrence.
- High — Human theologian review required.
- Medium — Native speaker review recommended.
- Low — Automated review sufficient.
Section 1 — Full Doctrine Matrix (33 Doctrines)
| # | Doctrine (registry key) | Risk | Mandarin Doctrine Name | Key Terms | Supporting Passages (John) | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | deity_of_christ | Critical | 基督的神性 | 神的儿子, 与神平等, 道, 我是, 我的主我的神 | 1:1,18; 5:18; 8:58; 10:30; 20:28 | 道 is shared with Daoist impersonal cosmic principle; 与神平等 must never be softened to “an exalted human ruler” (Mandate-of-Heaven-style semi-divinity). | Human theologian |
| 2 | preexistence_of_christ | Critical | 基督的先存 | 道, 还没有亚伯拉罕就有了我, 荣耀 | 1:1-3,14; 8:58; 17:5 | 8:58’s echo of Exodus 3:14’s divine name (Ego eimi) is not self-evident from the Mandarin surface text; without a teaching note, only “great age” may be heard, not timeless self-existence. | Human theologian |
| 3 | incarnation | Critical | 道成肉身 | 道成肉身, 肉身, 住 | 1:14 | Reuses baseline Critical doctrine exactly; 道 must be personal/eternal Word, never impersonal Way; 住 (tabernacled) must not read as a temporary, repeatable visitation (化身/下凡). | Human theologian |
| 4 | sonship_of_christ | Critical | 基督的儿子名分 | 神的儿子, 人子, 父, 独生子 | 1:14,18; 3:16-18; 5:18; 10:36 | Never equate with 天子 (transferable imperial office); 独生子 collides with modern 独生子女 (one-child-policy demographic term) — mandatory note at every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 5 | new_birth_regeneration | Critical | 重生与圣灵的更新 | 重生, 水和圣灵, 风/圣灵, 神的儿女 | 1:12-13; 3:1-8; 3:31 | 重生 is common secular Mandarin for any dramatic turnaround; must be taught as Spirit-wrought re-creation, never 轮回 (reincarnation) or a self-motivated “new leaf”; 水 risks assimilation to 符水 (Daoist talisman-water healing ritual). | Human theologian |
| 6 | eternal_life_through_faith | Critical | 因信得永生 | 永生, 生命, 信, 认识 | 3:15-16,36; 5:24; 6:47; 10:28; 17:3; 20:30-31 | 永生 risks collision with Daoist physical-immortality cultivation (长生不老, 仙丹); must be present, relational, qualitative life with God through faith, not biological life-extension by technique. | Human theologian |
| 7 | gods_love_for_the_world | High | 神爱世人 | 爱, 世人, 世界, 独生子 | 3:16; 4:42; 15:18-19 (contrast); 17:23 | 爱 is broad everyday vocabulary (romantic/familial/patriotic); must be specified as self-giving, initiating divine love, not generic parental affection or folk-deity favor dispensed for piety. | Human theologian |
| 8 | judgment_and_unbelief | High | 审判与信/不信 | 审判, 信, 光, 黑暗, 灭亡 | 3:17-21,36; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31,48; 16:8-11 | Must be sharply distinguished from the folk-religious Ten Courts of Hell (十殿阎罗) / 阎王 karmic-ledger tribunal and from impersonal 报应; God’s judgment is personal, present, and belief-contingent. | Human theologian |
| 9 | seven_i_am_statements | High | 七个”我是”的宣告 | 生命的粮, 世界的光, 好牧人, 门, 复活和生命, 道路、真理、生命, 真葡萄树 | 6:35; 8:12; 10:7,9,11; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1,5 | Each claim is exclusive (“the,” not “a”); Mandarin’s lack of articles risks an indefinite reading; 道路 shares a root character with λόγος’s 道, requiring a distinguishing note. | Human theologian |
| 10 | holy_spirit_as_counselor | Critical | 圣灵是保惠师 | 保惠师, 真理的圣灵, 圣灵, 领受圣灵 | 14:16,26; 15:26; 16:7-15; 20:22 | 保惠师 is a coined term requiring active teaching; must be distinguished from a secular lawyer (律师) and a folk ritual-power intermediary/medium (法师); the Spirit is a personal divine Person, not an impersonal helper-force. | Human theologian |
| 11 | substitutionary_death_of_christ | Critical | 基督替代性的死 | 神的羔羊, 舍命, 替百姓死, 钉十字架, 成了 | 1:29,36; 10:11-18; 11:49-52; ch. 19 | 神的羔羊 must be distinguished from repeated folk-religious animal-offering rituals to appease deities/ancestors; 成了 must retain triumphant completion, resisting drift toward a merit-accumulation reading. | Human theologian |
| 12 | resurrection_of_christ | Critical | 基督的复活 | 复活, 复活和生命, 复活得生/复活受审判 | 2:19-22; 5:28-29; 11:25; ch. 20 | Never 轮回 (reincarnation), 投胎 (rebirth into new womb), or 还魂 (folk ghost-story reanimation); ch. 20’s physical details (grave-clothes, wounds) are an implicit anti-docetic, anti-ghost-story argument that must be preserved. | Human theologian |
| 13 | unity_of_father_and_son | Critical | 父子的合一 | 我与父原为一, 父, 神的儿子, 合而为一 | 5:17-23; 10:30; 14:9-11; 17:11,21-23 | Must remain ontological unity (shared divine being), not softened toward Confucian relational-harmony (和) implying mere agreement; must be distinguished from the analogous-but-not-identical unity of believers in ch. 17. | Human theologian |
| 14 | unity_of_believers | High | 信徒的合一 | 合而为一, 我与父原为一 | 17:11; 17:21-23 | Derivative, relational/missional unity modeled on but not identical to Father-Son ontological unity; teaching must guard against both overstatement and flattening. | Human theologian |
| 15 | humanity_of_christ | High | 基督的人性 | 肉身, 血和水, 心里悲叹 | 1:14; 11:35; 19:34 | 肉身’s positive sense (real humanity, 1:14) shares the same word as the negative sense of merely-human origin (3:6); each occurrence must be valence-flagged. | Human theologian |
(Maitreya), the future-Buddha figure of Chinese millenarian folk movements; Christ is the Messiah who has already come. | Human theologian |
| 17 | adoption_children_of_god | High | 神的儿女 | 神的儿女, 神的儿子, 重生 | 1:12-13; 11:52 | Must be distinguished from 过继 (clan-internal heir transfer for ancestor-worship continuation); believers receive full relational sonship granted directly by God. | Human theologian |
| 18 | sanctification | Critical | 成圣 | 成圣, 圣洁, 常在 | 10:36; 17:17,19 | Direct borrowing of the Neo-Confucian self-cultivation-into-sagehood term; every occurrence needs a sense-specific note (Father’s consecration of the Son at 10:36 vs. Spirit/truth-grounded sanctification of believers at 17:17,19), both distinct from self-achieved moral perfection. | Human theologian |
| 19 | effectual_calling_drawing | High | 神有效的吸引与呼召 | 吸引, 拣选 | 6:44,65; 12:32; 15:16,19 | 吸引 must not read as an impersonal mechanical force (气) or folk-ritual pull; the Father’s drawing is personal and gracious, paralleling baseline’s caution against 天命/命运 for election. | Human theologian |
| 20 | christian_identity_abiding_in_christ | High | 在基督里的身份与常在 | 常在, 真葡萄树, 果子 | 6:56; 8:31,35; 15:1-10 | 常在 must be distinguished from Daoist/Buddhist meditative abiding (安住, 入定); 果子 must not be read as merit accumulated through effort (功德), but as evidence of union. | Human theologian |
| 21 | worship_in_spirit_and_truth | Medium | 用心灵和诚实敬拜 | 敬拜, 心灵和诚实/灵和真理 | 4:20-24 | 敬拜 must be distinguished from ritual, site-based folk worship (temple incense-offering, ancestral shrine rites); CUV’s “心灵和诚实” risks softening πνεῦμα toward a psychological “sincere heart” sense. | Native speaker review |
| 22 | universal_scope_of_the_gospel | High | 福音普及万民 | 世界的救主, 外邦人, 希腊人, 世人 | 3:16; 4:42; 7:35; 10:16; 12:20,32 | Must resist any echo of the classical Hua-Yi (华夷) civilized-insider/outsider distinction; Samaritan and Greek inclusion must retain unqualified universal scope. | Human theologian |
| 23 | assurance_and_victory_over_the_world | Medium | 得胜世界的确据 | 胜了/得胜, 平安, 患难 | 14:27; 16:33 | 得胜 must preserve perfect-tense “already accomplished” force; 平安 must be distinguished from the everyday amulet/well-wishing sense. | Native speaker review |
| 24 | new_commandment_of_love | High | 彼此相爱的新命令 | 新命令, 爱, 朋友 | 13:34-35; 15:12-15 | Must be distinguished from Confucian relational ethics (仁, 礼); command is grounded in Christ’s own sacrificial example, not a duty owed within a fixed social hierarchy. | Human theologian |
| 25 | light_and_darkness | High | 光明与黑暗的对立 | 光, 黑暗, 世界的光 | 1:4-9; 3:19-21; 8:12; 9:5; 12:35-36,46 | Must be distinguished from Daoist yin-yang cosmology (阴阳) — complementary, impersonal, morally neutral principles — versus John’s personal moral-spiritual antithesis. | Human theologian |
| 26 | lordship_of_christ | Critical | 基督的主权 | 主, 我的主我的神 | 13:13-14; 20:28; 21:7 | Reuses baseline Critical doctrine exactly; the climactic 20:28 confession must never soften toward a social-honorific reading (老爷/主人). | Human theologian |
| 27 | faith_and_belief | High | 对基督的信 | 信, 信心 | 1:12; 3:15-18,36; 20:30-31 | 信 alone risks bare cognitive-assent reading; object of faith (the Son) must always be explicit; 20:30-31 requires consistency-locked rendering across all curriculum materials as the Gospel’s thesis statement. | Human theologian |
| 28 | sin_and_conviction | High | 罪与圣灵的责备 | 罪, 审判, 义 | 1:29; 8:34; 9:41; 16:8-11 | The Spirit’s convicting work directly reuses baseline Critical terms 罪 and 义; must not be reframed as producing guilt-driven self-effort toward merit (功德). | Human theologian |
| 29 | shepherd_and_pastoral_ministry | Medium | 牧人与牧养的事奉 | 好牧人, 羊, 牧养/喂养 | 10:1-18,27; 21:15-17 | The Good Shepherd’s non-negotiable mark (willingness to die for the sheep) must not dilute into a generic hired-manager role; Peter’s commission is derivative of, not a replacement for, Christ’s own shepherding. | Native speaker review |
| 30 | living_water_and_the_spirit | Medium | 活水与圣灵的赏赐 | 活水, 圣灵, 住棚节 | 4:10-14; 7:37-39 | 活水 must be distinguished from Daoist/folk “immortality spring” or magical healing-water motifs; the living water is Christ/the Spirit received by faith, not a substance with inherent ritual power. | Native speaker review |
| 31 | fellowship_and_mutual_edification | Low | 团契与彼此造就 | 朋友, 彼此相爱 | 13:34-35; 15:12-17; 17:11 | Minor risk of conflating disciples’ Christ-granted intimacy with a ritualized sworn-brotherhood pact (结拜). | Automated review |
| 32 | apostleship_and_sending | Low | 使徒的职分与差遣 | 使徒, 差/差遣 | 13:16; 17:18; 20:21 | Minor risk of conflating 使徒 with a martial-arts/Daoist “grandmaster” lineage figure if paraphrased loosely. | Automated review |
| 33 | thanksgiving | Low | 感恩 | 感恩 | 6:11,23; 11:41 | Minor risk of generic secular gratitude expressed without reference to God specifically; no significant folk-religious collision. | Automated review |

Section 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage Trace (Full Book, John 1–21)
Per the PRD full-book coverage mandate, every chapter of John is traced below to the doctrines it activates. No chapter is silently omitted; where a chapter’s primary contribution is narrative/background rather than new doctrinal freight, that is stated explicitly.
| Ch. | Content Summary | Active Doctrines (matrix #) | Coverage Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prologue (Logos, Incarnation); John the Baptist’s witness; Lamb of God; first disciples | 1, 2, 3, 4, 16, 17, 25, 28 | Highest doctrinal density in the book; establishes vocabulary (道, 独生子, 神的羔羊, 光/黑暗) used throughout. |
| 2 | Wedding at Cana (first sign); temple cleansing; “raise it up in three days” | 12, 9 (implicit belief-producing sign) | Sign at Cana anticipates the “signs → belief” pattern (cf. 20:30-31); 2:19-22 anticipates resurrection doctrine before ch. 20’s full treatment. |
| 3 | Core passage. Nicodemus dialogue; new birth; John 3:16; judgment; light/darkness | 5, 6, 7, 8, 25, 27 | Theological anchor of the curriculum; every Critical/High doctrine in this chapter carries maximal weight for the whole curriculum’s framing. |
| 4 | Samaritan woman; living water; worship in spirit and truth; “Savior of the world” | 21, 22, 30, 27 | Establishes universal scope (Samaritan inclusion) ahead of its fuller expression in chs. 10, 12. |
| 5 | Healing at the pool; “equal with God”; resurrection of life/judgment; Father-Son unity | 1, 4, 8, 12, 13 | Sabbath-controversy discourse is the first extended deity-of-Christ argument outside the prologue. |
| 6 | Feeding of the 5,000; Bread of Life discourse; the Father’s drawing; thanksgiving | 6, 9, 19, 27, 33 | First of the seven “I Am” statements (bread of life); introduces effectual-calling vocabulary (6:44,65). |
| 7 | Feast of Tabernacles; debate over Christ’s origin; Davidic-lineage question; living water promise | 16, 30 | Background/setting chapter; contributes messianic-expectation vocabulary and anticipates ch. 4’s living-water motif via 7:37-39. |
| 8 | Light of the World; “before Abraham was, I AM”; freedom from sin; abiding in the word | 2, 9, 20, 25, 28 | Contains the sharpest pre-existence prooftext (8:58) in the book outside 1:1. |
| 9 | Healing of the man born blind; judgment on the Pharisees’ unbelief | 8, 25 | Narrative enactment of the light/darkness and judgment doctrines already established in chs. 1, 3, 8. |
| 10 | Good Shepherd; the Door; “I and the Father are one”; universal scope (“other sheep”) | 9, 13, 11, 22, 29 | Contains the single sharpest unity-of-Father-and-Son prooftext (10:30) in the book. |
| 11 | Lazarus raised; “I am the resurrection and the life”; Caiaphas’s unwitting prophecy; adoption language | 9, 12, 11, 17 | Anticipates ch. 20’s resurrection doctrine narratively; substitutionary death introduced via 11:49-52. |
| 12 | Triumphal entry; Greeks seek Jesus; “lifted up”; light/darkness summary; judgment on the ruler of this world | 22, 25, 8, 11 | Hinge chapter transitioning from public ministry to the Passion narrative; universal scope reaches its fullest pre-Passion statement. |
| 13 | Footwashing; new commandment; prediction of betrayal; apostleship/sending; lordship | 24, 32, 26, 15 (humility as enacted humanity) | Introduces the Farewell Discourse (chs. 13–17) and its distinctive vocabulary of love and sending. |
| 14 | ”I am the way, the truth, and the life”; promise of the Paraclete; Father-Son unity; peace | 9, 10, 13, 23 | First full Paraclete/Counselor teaching (14:16,26); introduces 平安 in its distinctively Johannine sense. |
| 15 | True Vine; abiding; new commandment; friends not servants; the Spirit of truth; world’s hostility | 20, 24, 31, 10, 7 (negative “world” sense) | Establishes the negative-valence sense of κόσμος that must be distinguished from 3:16’s positive sense. |
| 16 | Spirit’s convicting ministry (sin, righteousness, judgment); sorrow turned to joy; “I have overcome the world” | 10, 28, 8, 23 | Most concentrated Holy-Spirit-as-Counselor teaching in the book (16:7-15); ties directly to sin_and_conviction doctrine. |
| 17 | High Priestly Prayer: sanctification of the Son and of believers; “that they may be one”; eternal life defined | 18, 13, 14, 6 | Sanctification doctrine’s two distinct senses (Son’s consecration vs. believers’ sanctification) both occur here and require separate notes. |
| 18 | Betrayal, arrest, trials before Annas/Caiaphas/Pilate; “I am he” (ἐγώ εἰμι at the arrest) | 26, 2 (echo of the divine-name idiom) | Primarily narrative/legal-proceedings chapter; contributes a further ἐγώ εἰμι occurrence reinforcing ch. 8’s pre-existence doctrine. |
| 19 | Crucifixion; “It is finished”; blood and water; burial; fulfilled prophecy (unbroken bones) | 11, 15, 16 | Central substitutionary-death chapter; humanity-of-Christ evidentiary details (19:34) and prophecy fulfillment (19:36) converge here. |
| 20 | Empty tomb; resurrection appearances; “My Lord and my God”; the Gospel’s purpose statement | 12, 26, 27, 6 | Climactic resurrection and lordship chapter; 20:30-31 is the Gospel’s own doctrinal thesis statement requiring consistency-locked rendering. |
| 21 | Miraculous catch of fish; restoration of Peter; “feed my sheep”; final commissioning | 29, 32 | Epilogue chapter; ties pastoral ministry doctrine back to ch. 10’s Good Shepherd teaching. |
Coverage confirmation: All 21 chapters of John have been reviewed. Every chapter contributes directly to at least one doctrine in the matrix above (Section 1); no chapter was found to contribute zero doctrinal or terminological load, so none required an “explicitly no new content” notation — this finding is itself recorded here to satisfy the full-book-coverage requirement.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Deity of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的神性
Key terms: 神的儿子, 与神平等, 道, 我是, 我的主,我的神
Review routing: Human theologian
The Deity of Christ rests partly on 道 (Logos, John 1:1), a character also central to Daoist metaphysics as an impersonal cosmic principle; every deity-of-Christ passage using 道 or 与神平等 must be taught as asserting a co-equal, eternal divine nature — not an especially exalted human ruler elevated toward semi-divine status, as in the Chinese emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven-derived legitimacy.
Pre-existence of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的先存
Key terms: 道, 还没有亚伯拉罕就有了我, 荣耀
Review routing: Human theologian
The pre-existence claim in 8:58 (‘before Abraham was, I am’) echoes the divine name of Exodus 3:14, but the Mandarin surface rendering does not make this echo self-evident; without an explicit teaching note, Mandarin readers may hear only a claim of great age rather than timeless self-existence, weakening the doctrine’s force.
Incarnation
Mandarin name: 道成肉身
Key terms: 道成肉身, 肉身, 住
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses the baseline Critical doctrine exactly. 道 within 道成肉身 must always be taught as the personal, eternal divine Word taking flesh, never as the impersonal Daoist Way manifesting in matter; the tabernacling verb (住) must not suggest a temporary, repeatable visitation akin to a bodhisattva’s manifestation (化身/下凡).
Sonship of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的儿子名分
Key terms: 神的儿子, 人子, 父, 独生子
Review routing: Human theologian
Must never be equated with 天子 (‘Son of Heaven’), the historic Chinese imperial title held by any legitimate emperor under an impersonal, transferable Mandate of Heaven; Christ’s Sonship is eternal and unique, not an office that could pass to another holder. The rendering 独生子 for μονογενής also collides with the modern demographic term 独生子女 (only child under China’s one-child policy); a mandatory translator’s note at every occurrence (1:14,18; 3:16,18) is required.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Mandarin name: 重生与圣灵的更新
Key terms: 重生, 水和圣灵, 风/圣灵, 神的儿女
Review routing: Human theologian
重生 is common secular Mandarin for any dramatic life-turnaround (surviving illness or disaster) and must be explicitly taught as a Spirit-wrought, God-originated re-creation, never a self-motivated ‘new leaf’ nor Buddhist 轮回 (reincarnation into a new body across lives). The water imagery in 3:5 additionally risks assimilation to Daoist 符水 (talisman water) ritual-healing practice if not clarified as God’s sovereign act received by faith rather than a cleansing technique.
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Mandarin name: 因信得永生
Key terms: 永生, 生命, 信, 认识
Review routing: Human theologian
永生 risks collision with the Daoist pursuit of physical immortality (长生不老) through alchemy, elixirs, or self-cultivation aimed at becoming an immortal (仙人/神仙); must be taught explicitly as present, relational, qualitative life with God through faith in Christ, received now, not an extension of biological existence achieved by technique.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Mandarin name: 圣灵是保惠师
Key terms: 保惠师, 真理的圣灵, 圣灵, 领受圣灵
Review routing: Human theologian
保惠师 is a coined Chinese Christian term with little prior secular or folk-religious baggage, but for that reason must be actively taught rather than assumed self-evident; it must be distinguished from a secular legal advocate (律师), from a folk-religious spirit-medium or ritual intermediary who channels or manipulates spiritual power on a client’s behalf (法师), and from any impersonal helper-force — the Spirit-Paraclete is a personal, divine Person continuing Christ’s own presence and ministry.
Christ’s Substitutionary Death
Mandarin name: 基督替代性的死
Key terms: 神的羔羊, 舍命, 替百姓死, 钉十字架, 成了
Review routing: Human theologian
神的羔羊 (Lamb of God) must be distinguished from the repeated animal-offering rituals of Chinese folk religion performed to appease deities or ancestors; this Lamb’s death is a unique, unrepeatable, substitutionary atonement. 成了 (‘It is finished’) must retain the sense of triumphant, completed accomplishment, not a resigned ‘it’s over,’ resisting any drift toward a merit-accumulation reading where the finished work could still be added to by further ritual or effort.
Resurrection of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的复活
Key terms: 复活, 复活和生命, 复活得生/复活受审判
Review routing: Human theologian
复活 must never be rendered or glossed with 轮回 (the cycle of reincarnation), 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb), or 还魂 (folk ghost-story reanimation of a corpse). John 20’s concrete physical details — folded grave-clothes, an invitation to touch the wounds — function as an implicit anti-docetic, anti-ghost-story argument that must be preserved in teaching, not treated as incidental narrative color.
Unity of the Father and the Son
Mandarin name: 父子的合一
Key terms: 我与父原为一, 父, 神的儿子, 合而为一
Review routing: Human theologian
‘我与父原为一’ (10:30) must be preserved as an ontological unity claim — shared divine being — not softened toward Confucian relational-harmony language (和, hé) implying mere agreement or cooperative concord between two distinct persons; this softening risk is heightened because 合而为一 is also used of believers’ relational unity in ch. 17, which is analogous but not identical in kind and must be kept doctrinally distinct.
Messianic Promise and Fulfillment of Prophecy
Mandarin name: 弥赛亚的应许与预言的应验
Key terms: 基督, 犹太人的王, 他的骨头一根也不折断, 神的羔羊
Review routing: Human theologian
基督 must never be conflated with 弥勒 (Maitreya), the future Buddha of Chinese Buddhist eschatology expected to appear and save the world in a coming age, historically invoked by Chinese millenarian folk movements; Christ is the Messiah who has already come, fulfilling specific, already-written Jewish covenant promises, not one of several anticipated future world-saviors.
Sanctification
Mandarin name: 成圣
Key terms: 成圣, 圣洁, 常在
Review routing: Human theologian
成圣 is a direct borrowing of the Neo-Confucian technical term (Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming) for self-cultivation into sagehood through personal moral effort; every occurrence requires a sense-specific note distinguishing the Father’s unique consecration of the Son (10:36) from the Spirit/truth-grounded sanctification of already-loved believers (17:17,19), and both from self-achieved moral perfection.
Lordship of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的主权
Key terms: 主, 我的主,我的神
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses the baseline Critical doctrine exactly; the climactic confession ‘My Lord and my God’ (20:28) must never be softened toward a merely social-honorific reading (cf. baseline’s caution against 老爷/主人), since this is the Gospel’s own capstone confession of full, worshiped deity and exclusive lordship.
High Risk Doctrines
God’s Love for the World
Mandarin name: 神爱世人
Key terms: 爱, 世人, 世界, 独生子
Review routing: Human theologian
爱 is broad, everyday Mandarin vocabulary (romantic, familial, patriotic love) and must be specified as agapē — self-giving, initiating divine love — or 神爱世人 risks being heard as generic parental affection. The same word 世界/世人 also carries a negative, God-opposing sense elsewhere in John (15:18), requiring contextual glossing so the positive scope of God’s love in 3:16 is not confused with or diluted by the later hostile-world sense.
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Mandarin name: 审判与信/不信
Key terms: 审判, 信, 光, 黑暗, 灭亡
Review routing: Human theologian
审判 must be sharply distinguished from the elaborate Chinese folk-religious postmortem judgment apparatus (十殿阎罗, the Ten Courts of the Kings of Hell; 阎王 weighing deeds against a karmic ledger) and from impersonal 报应 (karmic retribution); God’s judgment in John is personal, present, and contingent on one’s response to the Son, not a bureaucratic underworld tribunal weighing accumulated deeds.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Mandarin name: 七个’我是’的宣告
Key terms: 生命的粮, 世界的光, 好牧人, 门, 复活和生命, 道路、真理、生命, 真葡萄树
Review routing: Human theologian
Each statement claims an exclusive, singular identity (‘the bread,’ ‘the door,’ ‘the way’) that must not be softened toward ‘a’ bread/door/way among several options; 道路 in 14:6 additionally shares a root character with λόγος’s rendering 道, a resonance that is theologically suggestive but requires an explicit note distinguishing the two distinct Greek terms sharing one Mandarin character.
Unity of Believers (in Christ’s Prayer)
Mandarin name: 信徒的合一
Key terms: 合而为一, 我与父原为一
Review routing: Human theologian
This relational/missional unity, modeled on but derivative of the Father-Son ontological unity (10:30), risks two opposite errors in teaching: overstating believers’ unity as itself a divine ontological unity, or flattening the Father-Son unity down to the same kind of relational harmony believers are called to — both must be explicitly distinguished.
Humanity of Christ
Mandarin name: 基督的人性
Key terms: 肉身, 血和水, 心里悲叹
Review routing: Human theologian
肉身 in its positive sense (Christ’s real humanity, 1:14) uses the same Mandarin word as the negative sense of merely-human origin in 3:6; each occurrence must be flagged for valence to prevent readers from concluding Christ’s flesh was merely apparent or, conversely, that ordinary human flesh is spiritually self-sufficient.
Adoption into God’s Family / Children of God
Mandarin name: 神的儿女
Key terms: 神的儿女, 神的儿子, 重生
Review routing: Human theologian
神的儿女 must be distinguished from 过继, the traditional Chinese practice of transferring a son (often within a clan) specifically to continue a family’s ancestor-worship line and inheritance — an instrumental, lineage-continuation arrangement — whereas believers receive full relational sonship and inheritance granted directly by God’s own act, not a family-management arrangement.
Effectual Calling (the Father’s Drawing)
Mandarin name: 神有效的吸引与呼召
Key terms: 吸引, 拣选
Review routing: Human theologian
吸引 must not be read as an impersonal, mechanical force comparable to 气 (qì, vital life-energy) or a folk-ritual pull; the Father’s drawing is personal and gracious, paralleling the baseline’s caution against 天命 (Mandate of Heaven) or 命运 (impersonal fate) for divine election/calling.
Christian Identity in Christ (Abiding)
Mandarin name: 在基督里的身份与常在
Key terms: 常在, 真葡萄树, 果子
Review routing: Human theologian
常在 must be clearly distinguished from Daoist/Buddhist meditative ‘abiding’ (安住, 入定) cultivated through stillness technique; here it is a relationship of dependent faith sustained by Christ himself, explicitly tied to obedience and answered prayer (15:7,10), not a meditative state achieved by personal practice. Fruit (果子) likewise must not be read as merit accumulated through effort (功德), but as the evidence, not the achievement, of abiding union.
Universal Scope of the Gospel
Mandarin name: 福音普及万民
Key terms: 世界的救主, 外邦人, 希腊人, 世人
Review routing: Human theologian
Must resist any framing that echoes the classical Hua-Yi (华夷) civilized-insider/outsider distinction; the Samaritan woman’s and the Greeks’ inclusion (chs. 4, 12) must retain unqualified universal scope, and 世界的救主 must not be narrowed toward a single ethnic or national savior-figure.
The New Commandment of Love
Mandarin name: 彼此相爱的新命令
Key terms: 新命令, 爱, 朋友
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be distinguished from Confucian relational ethics — 仁 (benevolence) and 礼 (ritual propriety, already flagged under the baseline’s ‘law’ entry) — since this command grounds love directly in Christ’s own sacrificial example and in the intimacy of friendship he grants, not in a duty owed within a fixed social hierarchy.
Light and Darkness (Moral-Spiritual Antithesis)
Mandarin name: 光明与黑暗的对立
Key terms: 光, 黑暗, 世界的光
Review routing: Human theologian
光 and 黑暗 must be distinguished from Daoist yin-yang cosmology (阴阳), where light and darkness are complementary, impersonal, morally neutral principles in dynamic balance; John’s antithesis is a personal moral-spiritual opposition rooted in a personal God’s self-revelation, not a balanced cosmic duality.
Faith and Belief in Christ
Mandarin name: 对基督的信
Key terms: 信, 信心
Review routing: Human theologian
信 alone can be read as bare cognitive assent in everyday Mandarin (‘I believe that…’); the personal object of faith (the Son) must always be explicit in context, per the baseline’s existing caution, and 20:30-31 should be treated as a fixed, consistency-locked rendering across all John curriculum materials as the Gospel’s own thesis statement, parallel to the baseline’s treatment of Romans 1:16-17.
Sin and the Spirit’s Conviction
Mandarin name: 罪与圣灵的责备
Key terms: 罪, 审判, 义
Review routing: Human theologian
The Spirit’s convicting work ‘concerning sin and righteousness and judgment’ (16:8-10) directly reuses the baseline’s Critical terms 罪 and 义 together with 审判; this convicting work must not be reframed as producing guilt-driven self-effort toward merit (功德), but as leading a person toward faith in the Son.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Worship in Spirit and Truth
Mandarin name: 用心灵和诚实敬拜
Key terms: 敬拜, 心灵和诚实/灵和真理
Review routing: Native speaker review
敬拜 must be distinguished from ritual, site-based folk worship practices (temple incense-offering, fixed ancestral shrine rites); CUV’s ‘心灵和诚实’ also risks softening πνεῦμα toward a merely psychological ‘sincere heart’ sense rather than the Holy Spirit’s enablement, so teaching should clarify the Spirit’s active role.
Assurance and Victory over the World
Mandarin name: 得胜世界的确据
Key terms: 胜了/得胜, 平安, 患难
Review routing: Native speaker review
得胜 must preserve the perfect-tense ‘already accomplished’ force of νενίκηκα rather than reading as a future-only hope; 平安 must also be distinguished from the everyday well-wishing sense of the same word used on protective amulets, per the baseline’s existing caution.
Shepherd and Pastoral Ministry
Mandarin name: 牧人与牧养的事奉
Key terms: 好牧人, 羊, 牧养/喂养
Review routing: Native speaker review
好牧人’s defining, non-negotiable mark — willingness to die for the sheep — must not be diluted into a generic hired-manager role (μισθωτός); Peter’s pastoral commission (21:15-17) must be taught as derivative of and accountable to Christ’s own shepherding, not an independent replacement for it.
Living Water and the Spirit’s Gift
Mandarin name: 活水与圣灵的赏赐
Key terms: 活水, 圣灵, 住棚节
Review routing: Native speaker review
活水 must be distinguished from Daoist/folk ‘immortality spring’ or magical healing-water motifs; this living water is Christ himself and the Holy Spirit received by faith, not a location or substance with inherent ritual power that can be drawn upon mechanically.
Low Risk Doctrines
Fellowship and Mutual Edification
Mandarin name: 团契与彼此造就
Key terms: 朋友, 彼此相爱
Review routing: Automated review
Low collision risk: standard Mandarin Christian vocabulary for relational community and mutual love; minor risk only of conflating the intimacy Christ grants disciples with a ritualized sworn-brotherhood pact (结拜, e.g. the Peach Garden oath), already flagged in the baseline fellowship entry.
Apostleship and Sending
Mandarin name: 使徒的职分与差遣
Key terms: 使徒, 差/差遣
Review routing: Automated review
Low collision risk: 使徒 and 差遣 are established, specific terms; minor risk of readers conflating 使徒 with a martial-arts or Daoist ‘grandmaster’ lineage figure if paraphrased loosely, matching the baseline’s existing apostleship caution.
Thanksgiving
Mandarin name: 感恩
Key terms: 感恩
Review routing: Automated review
Standard term reused from baseline; minor risk of generic secular gratitude expressed without reference to God specifically, but no significant folk-religious collision.
