Linguistic Gap Analysis
06 Linguistic Gap Analysis — Luke (Full Book)
Purpose and Method
This analysis identifies where Mandarin Chinese either (a) lacks a clean lexical equivalent for a load-bearing Lukan concept, or (b) possesses a ready term that is already occupied by a competing religious, philosophical, or political tradition and therefore requires explicit doctrinal “fencing.” It builds directly on the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json (which this package extends and never contradicts) and pre-establishes the vocabulary decisions later formalized in 08_core_glossary.md. Every chapter of Luke (1–24) has been swept for gap-analysis purposes; chapters that introduce no vocabulary or ambiguity issue beyond what is already catalogued elsewhere in this document are noted as reviewed in the Full-Book Coverage Sweep (Section 5) rather than silently omitted.
The core passage, Luke 4:16-21 (Jesus reading Isaiah 61 in the Nazareth synagogue), is the theological anchor of this curriculum and the site of this document’s single highest-density cluster of gaps (禧年/Jubilee, 释放/赦免 split, 膏/anoint, 应验/fulfilled, 贫穷的人/poor) — but gap analysis is not limited to it.
1. Doctrine Vocabulary Matrix
For each of the eight curriculum doctrines: the Mandarin vocabulary currently available (reused from the Romans baseline plus Luke-specific terms already registered in bible_term_registry.json), its structural weaknesses/collision risks, and the recommended translation strategy.
1.1 Jesus as Savior for All Nations and All People (Jew and Gentile, Rich and Poor)
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 救主 (savior) | sōtēr was a common ancient title for kings/emperors/patrons; modern Chinese political history (e.g. 20th-century “救星” rhetoric applied to political leaders) offers a parallel this-worldly-rescuer reading. | Always co-occur with 罪 and 救恩 context; note explicitly that this is personal rescue from sin/judgment, not political liberation. |
| 外邦人 (Gentiles), 凡有血气的 (all flesh) | Already fenced against 夷人/Hua-Yi framing in the Romans baseline; Luke intensifies this with concrete narrative (Samaritans, centurion, Simeon’s prophecy). | Reuse exactly; reinforce with narrative teaching notes at 2:32, 7:9, 10:33, 17:16, 24:47. |
| 贫穷的人 (poor) / 财主 (rich) | 财主 carries residual 20th-century class-struggle connotations (阶级敌人-adjacent reading); 贫穷的人 risks a karmic-desert (报应) reading of poverty. | Frame both as descriptive spiritual-economic categories internal to Jesus’ teaching, not an invitation to a class-conflict or karma reading. |
| 邻舍 (neighbor), 撒马利亚人 (Samaritan) | 邻舍 risks narrowing back to literal geographic/ethnic proximity — exactly the boundary the Good Samaritan parable dismantles. | Mandatory background note on Jewish-Samaritan enmity at every Samaritan occurrence (9:52-56; 10:33; 17:16); teach 邻舍 as redefined by need, not proximity. |
1.2 The Holy Spirit’s Work in Salvation History
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 圣灵 (Holy Spirit), 圣灵充满/圣灵降在…身上 (filled with/came upon) | Newly identified gap beyond the Romans baseline: Luke’s infancy narrative and programmatic anointing (1:15, 35, 41, 67; 3:22; 4:1, 14, 18) narrate the Spirit “coming upon,” “filling,” and “overshadowing” individuals in ways that lexically overlap with Chinese folk/shamanic spirit-possession vocabulary — 上身 (“mounting”/possessing a medium), 跳大神 (shamanic trance ritual). Romans, which discusses the Spirit mainly in doctrinal exposition, never had to fence this narrative-possession collision. | Introduce a mandatory clarifying note at every “filled with/came upon” occurrence: the Holy Spirit’s indwelling/empowering is the personal, purposive, non-trance activity of the third Person of the Trinity for a specific redemptive purpose (prophecy, mission, incarnation), never a medium’s ecstatic possession by an unidentified spirit. |
| 童女 (virgin), 道成肉身 (incarnation), 膏 (anoint) | Already Critical/High in the Romans baseline or newly flagged (see 1.7 below); the Spirit’s role in the virginal conception (1:35) is the concrete historical ground of the already-Critical incarnation doctrine. | Reuse exactly; cross-reference incarnation doctrine note at 1:35. |
| 应验 (fulfilled), 预言 (prophecy) | Must convey linear, one-time OT→NT fulfillment, not cyclical dynastic-history reading (治乱循环). | Reuse exactly per Romans baseline caution; central to the core passage. |
1.3 Good News to the Poor and Marginalized
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 贫穷的人 (poor), 有福了 (blessed), 福音 (gospel) | All three sit inside the crowded 福 (fortune/blessing) semantic neighborhood; Luke’s Beatitudes (6:20-22) invert ordinary 福气 expectations by attaching blessing to poverty, hunger, and persecution — the opposite of folk 福 associations with wealth, health, and worldly success. | Mandatory fencing note at every 有福了 occurrence (6:20-22; 7:23; 11:28; 12:37,43; 14:14-15; 23:29) distinguishing eschatological reversal-blessing from luck/fortune. |
| 寡妇 (widow), 税吏 (tax collector), 罪人 (sinner), 失丧的 (lost) | Each names a socially marginal category; 寡妇 risks flattening to neutral demographic label; 税吏’s Roman-collaborator stigma has no modern equivalent. | Retain vulnerability/marginalization emphasis explicitly; supply background notes for 税吏’s first-century social position. |
| 有祸了 (woe) | Risk of being read as an imprecatory curse (诅咒) rather than sober prophetic warning. | Teach as prophetic warning of coming judgment, structurally parallel to OT prophetic woe-oracles. |
1.4 Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 悔改 (repentance) | Crowded neighborhood with 忏悔 (Buddhist/Daoist ritual confession reducing karmic debt) and 后悔 (mere secular regret). | NEVER 忏悔; reinforce relational turning-toward-God sense at every occurrence (3:3, 8; 5:32; 13:3, 5; 15:7, 10; 17:3-4; 24:47). |
| 释放 (release) / 赦免 (forgiveness) | The single Greek term ἄφεσις (captivity-release and sin-forgiveness) is unavoidably split across two Mandarin words, losing Luke’s deliberate literary unity linking liberation and forgiveness as one divine act. | Mandatory cross-referencing translator note at every occurrence of the ἄφεσις root (1:77; 3:3; 4:18 [twice]; 24:47), directing readers/reviewers to both terms as a single theological event. |
| 洗礼 (baptism) | Distinct from Daoist/folk ritual-purification practice (斋戒净身), a repeatable purity rite. | Teach as a definitive, one-time turning marked by water, not a repeatable cleansing ritual. |
1.5 Prayer and Dependence on God
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 祷告 (prayer), 代求 (intercession) | Crowded neighborhood with 求签 (fortune-stick divination), 问卜 (consulting a diviner), 烧香拜拜 (incense-petitioning of ancestors/deities). | Reuse exactly; theologian review flagged for the Lord’s Prayer (11:1-13) and Gethsemane (22:39-46) as anchor passages requiring especially careful, ritual-free rendering. |
| 阿爸/父 (Abba/Father), 不要惧怕 (do not fear), 神的护理 (providence) | 父 must be distinguished from ancestor veneration (祭祖); 不要惧怕 must be distinguished from reverent 敬畏; 神的护理 must avoid collapsing into impersonal 天意. | Reuse exactly from the Romans/registry baseline; reinforce personal, relational address at 11:2 and 22:42. |
1.6 The Kingdom of God Present and Future
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 神的国 (Kingdom of God) | Luke’s single most pervasive theme-term (4:43; 6:20; 9:27; 10:9; 11:20; 13:18-21; 17:20-21; 21:31; 22:16, 18; 23:42); low term-level ambiguity but high volume of context-sensitive “present vs. future” framing. | Reuse exactly; ensure consistency across all Kingdom occurrences per the Romans baseline’s cross-document consistency rule. |
| 神的国就在你们中间 (17:21, “within/among you”) | Genuine Greek ambiguity compounded by a Mandarin collision: an “inward/inside you” rendering (在你们心里) risks reading as Buddhist/Chan inward contemplation (内观). | Controlling default must be the corporate “in your midst” (Jesus’ own presence) reading; flag for theologian ratification rather than silent translator choice. |
| 永生 (eternal life) | Crowded neighborhood with Daoist/folk pursuit of physical immortality through cultivation, alchemy, or breathing technique (长生不老). | Teach as resurrection-life granted by grace through faith, never a technique-achieved life-extension (10:25; 18:18, 30). |
| 今天 (today, theological), 窄门 (narrow door), 患难 (tribulation) | 今天’s theological weight (decisive fulfillment “now,” 4:21; 19:9; 23:43) is entirely contextual and easily lost; 窄门 must be balanced against universal-scope doctrine (narrow in requiring response, not narrow in scope); 患难 must stay inside its eschatological frame. | Supply contextual notes at each theologically-loaded occurrence rather than relying on the term alone. |
1.7 The Cost and Joy of Discipleship
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 门徒 (disciple), 跟从 (follow) | 门徒 also names a Confucian scholarly-lineage/guild apprentice (孔门弟子); 跟从 risks reading as casual companionship. | Teach as costly, allegiance-based following of Jesus as Lord/Savior, not enrollment as a philosophy or skill apprentice. |
| 舍己 (deny self) / 背起十字架 (take up cross) | 舍己 risks collision with Buddhist 无我 (“no-self,” an illusory self to be dissolved); biblical self-denial presupposes a real, God-given self freely relinquished, not a metaphysical dissolution. | Mandatory clarifying note at 9:23 and 14:27. |
| (hate-idiom, 14:26) | No natural Mandarin equivalent for the Semitic supreme-priority idiom; a literal rendering (恨) directly collides with 孝 (filial piety), a foundational Confucian virtue. | Full paraphrase as relative-priority/supreme-allegiance language; NEVER literal 恨. Escalate for theologian review at every occurrence. |
| 玛门 (Mammon) | Money personified as a rival master; structurally identical to the exclusive-Lordship claim already Critical for 主/Lord in the Romans baseline. | Transliterate as a proper noun (not “money is bad” moralism); teach as a rival-lordship claim (16:13). |
| 喜乐 (joy), 管家 (steward) | 喜乐 risks collapsing into 福气 (luck-based happiness); 管家 risks reading as neutral resource-management divorced from accountability to a returning master. | Teach 喜乐 as relational, restoration-flowing gladness (15:7, 10, 32); teach 管家 with explicit accountability framing (12:42-48; 16:1-13). |
1.8 Jesus’ Compassion and Table Fellowship with Sinners
| Available Terms | Weakness / Collision Risk | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| 怜悯 (mercy/compassion) | NEVER 慈悲 — the celebrated Buddhist virtue associated with Guanyin, flowing from enlightened detachment rather than a personal, covenant-keeping God’s specific historical acts of rescue. | Reinforce personal, historically-acting compassion at 1:50, 54, 58, 72, 78; 7:13; 10:33; 15:20. |
| 一同吃饭/同席 (table fellowship) | Chinese banquet culture carries strong hierarchical seating (座次, 上座/下座) and 面子 (face) dynamics; risk that shared meals read as mere social courtesy rather than a deliberate, boundary-breaking act of grace. | Teach explicitly as a structural, theologically loaded act — Jesus deliberately overturning purity/status boundaries — at 5:29-32; 7:36-50; 15:1-2; 19:1-10; 22:14-30. |
| 罪人 (sinner), 税吏 (tax collector) | 罪人 built on the already-High 罪 root; risks a narrowly legal/criminal reading (cf. 罪犯) that misses the social-outcast dimension central to these table scenes. | Reuse exactly; supply the social-exclusion background note wherever paired with table-fellowship scenes. |
2. Missing Vocabulary vs. Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods
2.1 Genuinely Missing Vocabulary (no natural single Mandarin equivalent; requires paraphrase, coinage, or split-and-cross-reference)
| Concept | Gap Description | Handling |
|---|---|---|
| ἄφεσις wordplay (release + forgiveness as one word) | Mandarin has no single term spanning both senses; must split into 释放 / 赦免. | Split with mandatory cross-referencing translator note at every occurrence (1:77; 3:3; 4:18 [x2]; 24:47). |
| Jubilee / “Year of the Lord’s favor” | No existing Mandarin term carries the OT Leviticus 25 debt-release/land-restoration/manumission content; 禧 alone defaults to generic festive good fortune. | Paraphrase as 主的禧年 with mandatory OT Jubilee background note; never let 禧 stand alone without it. |
| ἐντός ambiguity (Kingdom “within/among” you) | Genuinely ambiguous in the source Greek itself, and Mandarin’s two candidate renderings (在你们心里 / 在你们中间) resolve the ambiguity in theologically opposite directions. | Controlling default = 在你们中间 (corporate, Christ’s-presence reading); theologian ratification required, not silent translator choice. |
| Son of Man’s Danielic apocalyptic-authority freight | 人子 as a bare Mandarin compound carries no inherent apocalyptic-authority connotation; it reads as a plain descriptor (“a son of man/a human”) without explicit teaching. | Supply a Daniel 7 background note at first occurrence in each teaching unit (9:22, 26, 44, 58; 12:8, 10, 40; 17:22-30; 18:8, 31; 19:10; 21:27, 36; 22:22, 48, 69; 24:7). |
| Hate-idiom (Semitic relative-priority idiom) | No Mandarin idiom naturally conveys “love X so much that loving Y looks like hatred by comparison.” | Full paraphrase into supreme-allegiance language for the specific verse (14:26); never transliterate or translate literally. |
| Mammon (personified wealth-power) | No native Mandarin personification of money as a rival spiritual master. | Transliterate as a proper noun (玛门), teach the personification explicitly. |
| Tax collector’s specific first-century stigma | No modern Chinese social category maps onto a Roman-collaborator revenue agent under religious/social exclusion. | Retain descriptive term 税吏 with mandatory background note at each occurrence. |
| Steward’s “accountable to a returning master” frame | 管家 alone reads as a neutral household-management role. | Supply explicit accountability-to-returning-master framing at every parable occurrence (12:42-48; 16:1-13). |
2.2 Crowded Semantic Neighborhoods Requiring Fencing
Mandarin terms that exist and are usable, but sit inside a semantic field already occupied by a competing tradition, requiring an explicit boundary note at each doctrinally significant occurrence.
| Mandarin Term / Cluster | Competing Occupant(s) of the Same Semantic Space | Fencing Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 福音 / 有福了 / 福气 / 禧(年) | Folk fortune-blessing vocabulary (福, 囍, New Year greetings, temple 求福 practice) | Explicit note at every occurrence that this “blessing” is God’s gracious salvation-favor or eschatological reversal, never an omen of coming luck. |
| 恩典 (already Critical in Romans baseline) | 功德 / 阴德 / 造化 (Buddhist merit-accounting) | Reinforced anew via the Prodigal Son (15:11-32) and Pharisee/tax collector (18:9-14) narratives; no new term but new narrative intensity. |
| 义 / 仁 | Confucian Five Constant Virtues | Already Critical-fenced in the Romans baseline; recurs at 1:6; 2:25; 15; 18; 20. |
| 成圣 / 修身 / 修炼 | Neo-Confucian self-cultivation into sagehood | Already Critical-fenced in the Romans baseline; recurs implicitly in Luke’s costly-discipleship passages (9:23; 14:26-33). |
| 悔改 / 忏悔 / 后悔 | Buddhist/Daoist ritual confession (忏悔) vs. mere secular regret (后悔) | NEVER 忏悔; reinforce relational turning at every occurrence. |
| 怜悯 / 慈悲 | Buddhist compassion associated with Guanyin (enlightened detachment) | NEVER 慈悲; reinforce personal, covenant-acting God at every Lukan compassion scene. |
| 永生 / 长生不老 | Daoist/folk physical-immortality cultivation | NEVER let 永生 stand without a note distinguishing grace-given resurrection life from technique-achieved life-extension. |
| 升天 / 得道升天 / 羽化升天 (+ colloquial death euphemism) | Daoist cultivator’s self-attained ascent to immortality; also a generic euphemism for death | NEVER present the Ascension as an attainment through spiritual practice or a mere death-euphemism; always teach as Christ’s unique, bodily, historical exaltation to reign. |
| 心眼开了 / 开悟 / 悟 | Chan/Buddhist enlightenment attained through the practitioner’s own meditative discipline | NEVER 开悟 or 悟; the risen Christ’s “opening” of understanding (24:31, 45) is a gift graciously given, not self-generated insight. |
| 圣灵充满 / 圣灵降在…身上 vs. 上身 / 跳大神 / 灵 / 祖灵 | Folk shamanic spirit-possession trance; ancestral-spirit veneration | Newly flagged gap for Luke (see §1.2); mandatory clarifying note at every Spirit-filling/coming-upon occurrence. |
| 人子 / 天子 | Historic imperial title “Son of Heaven” | Structural risk compounded by near-identical two-character form (人子 vs 天子) — a visual/reading-confusion risk in addition to the doctrinal risk already flagged in the Romans baseline for Son of God; typesetting/proofreading review recommended in addition to doctrinal review. |
| 律法 / 礼 / 法律 | Confucian ritual-propriety code; secular civil law | Already High-fenced in the Romans baseline; recurs at every Sabbath-controversy and Law-observance passage (2:22-24, 27, 39; 6:1-11; 13:10-17; 14:1-6). |
| 主 / 主人 / 老爷 / 玛门(as rival master) | Feudal honorific and ordinary master-servant relation; and Mammon as a structurally parallel rival lord | Already Critical-fenced for 主 in the Romans baseline; extended here by Mammon’s structurally identical rival-lordship claim (16:13). |
| 罪 / 罪犯 / 报应 | Criminal-legal guilt; karmic retribution | Already High-fenced in the Romans baseline; recurs throughout Luke’s repentance/forgiveness material. |
| 阴间 / 城隍 / 判官 | Folk-religious underworld bureaucracy requiring ritual navigation | Teach 阴间 (16:23) as a place of God’s just moral reckoning, not a bureaucratic underworld requiring ritual intervention. |
| 会堂 / 庙 / 寺 / 道观 | Folk temple / Buddhist temple / Daoist temple | Already fenced in the Romans baseline pattern; central to the core passage’s synagogue setting (4:16, 20, 28, 33, 38, 44; 6:6; 7:5; 13:10). |
| 财主 | 20th-century class-struggle-era political vocabulary (阶级敌人-adjacent reading) | Clarify as a descriptive economic/spiritual category internal to Jesus’ teaching, not an invitation to modern class-conflict framing. |
| 面子 / 同席 / 一同吃饭 | Chinese banquet hierarchy and face-preservation dynamics | Teach Jesus’ table fellowship as a deliberate, structural act of grace overturning status boundaries, not merely gracious social behavior. |
3. Transliteration vs. Paraphrase Decisions
| Term | Category | Decision | Rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jesus, Christ/Messiah | Proper name / title | Transliteration (耶稣 / 基督), reused from Romans baseline | Established CUV forms; no decision required. |
| Mammon | Personified power | Transliteration (玛门) | A paraphrase (“money,” “wealth”) would flatten the text’s personification of wealth as a rival lord into generic “money is bad” moralism; the proper-noun form preserves the structural parallel to 主/Lord. |
| Abba | Term of intimacy | Transliteration retained alongside paraphrase (阿爸父), reused from Romans baseline | Preserves filial intimacy the formal 父 alone may not carry (22:42, register-consistent with Romans 8:15). |
| Amen, Hallelujah | Liturgical transliterations | Transliteration (阿们, 哈利路亚), reused from Romans baseline | Established forms across Chinese Bible tradition. |
| Son of Man | Christological self-designation | Paraphrase (人子, established Chinese Christian compound) | This is a descriptive title, not a proper name; transliteration is not applicable. The compound must be supplemented with a Daniel 7 background note at first occurrence, since the bare compound carries no inherent apocalyptic freight (see §2.1). |
| Jubilee / Year of the Lord’s Favor | OT-rooted concept | Paraphrase (主的禧年) | Neither a literal calque (“year of release/liberty,” 自由年) nor a transliteration of the Hebrew/Greek is workable; the chosen paraphrase retains a recognizable “festive year” structure while requiring a mandatory Jubilee background note (see §2.1). |
| Hate-idiom (14:26) | Semitic idiom | Full paraphrase, context-dependent — render as supreme-allegiance/priority language, never 恨 | No fixed Mandarin lexical item exists for this idiom; each occurrence must be rendered contextually rather than glossary-fixed. |
| Passover | Feast name | Paraphrase/calque (逾越节), reused/established | CUV standard; requires an Exodus background note, not a transliteration decision. |
| Sabbath | Covenant institution | Paraphrase/calque (安息日, “rest day”), reused/established | CUV standard; covenantal weight must be taught, not lexically embedded. |
| Pharisee, Samaritan | Proper-noun-adjacent group names | Transliteration (法利赛人, 撒马利亚人), reused/established | Standard CUV transliterations; cultural-historical background notes required for full narrative force. |
| Tax collector | Social-role descriptor | Paraphrase (税吏), not transliteration | Role-based term, not a proper name; requires a first-century stigma background note (see §2.1). |
| Synagogue | Institution | Paraphrase (会堂, “assembly hall”), reused/established | Avoids transliteration of a term with no natural Chinese phonetic analogue; deliberately avoids the temple-building character family (庙/寺/道观). |
| Kingdom within/among you (17:21) | Rendering choice, not lexical gap | Paraphrase decision: 在你们中间 (among) selected over 在你们心里 (within) | Forced choice between two valid Mandarin renderings of a genuinely ambiguous Greek preposition; flagged Critical for theologian ratification rather than a routine glossary decision (see §1.6, §2.1). |
| Eternal life | Theological concept | Paraphrase/established compound (永生) | Not a transliteration candidate; risk lies entirely in the crowded semantic neighborhood (§2.2), not in the choice of rendering strategy. |
| Ascension | Theological event | Hybrid: 被带到天上去 (literal, preferred default for teaching contexts) / 升天 (doctrinal shorthand, permissible only with mandatory clarifying note) | Neither a transliteration nor a single clean paraphrase; the literal descriptive form is safer for first exposure, with the shorthand introduced only after the doctrinal note is established. |
| Savior | Title | Paraphrase/calque (救主) | Not a transliteration candidate; risk lies in the crowded neighborhood with political-savior rhetoric (§1.1), not the rendering strategy itself. |
| Anoint (verb) | OT office-installation act | Paraphrase (膏) | Everyday usage defaults to medicinal/cosmetic ointment (药膏); requires an OT anointing-for-office background note rather than an alternate rendering. |
3.1 Proper Name Appendix (New to Luke, Not in Romans Baseline)
The following proper names occur in Luke and require the established CUV transliteration form for consistency; none carry doctrinal risk beyond standard name-form fidelity.
| English | Mandarin | Pinyin |
|---|---|---|
| Zechariah (priest) | 撒迦利亚 | Sājiālìyà |
| Elizabeth | 伊利莎白 | Yīlìshābái |
| Mary | 马利亚 | Mǎlìyà |
| Gabriel | 加百列 | Jiābǎiliè |
| Simeon | 西面 | Xīmiàn |
| Anna (prophetess) | 亚拿 | Yànà |
| John (the Baptist) | 约翰 | Yuēhàn |
4. Ranked List of Highest-Risk Ambiguities in Luke
Ranked by combined severity (doctrinal centrality × collision probability × difficulty of mitigation). All Critical/High entries require human theologian review per the escalation rules established in the Romans baseline and extended by bible_term_registry.json.
| Rank | Ambiguity | Passage(s) | Risk | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kingdom “within/among” you (ἐντός) | 17:21 | Critical | Genuinely ambiguous in the Greek itself; the two candidate Mandarin renderings resolve the ambiguity in theologically opposite directions (individualist-mystical vs. corporate/Christological), with no textual escape hatch. |
| 2 | Year of the Lord’s Favor / Jubilee | 4:18-19 (core passage) | Critical | Sits at the theological center of the curriculum’s anchor passage; the 禧 root’s dominant modern connotation (festive luck) is the exact opposite semantic direction from the OT debt-release/liberation content required. |
| 3 | Ascension | 24:50-53 | Critical | 升天’s dual collision (Daoist self-attained immortality-ascent AND generic death euphemism) risks the doctrine disappearing entirely into either a cultivation narrative or a funerary cliché. |
| 4 | ἄφεσις wordplay split (release/forgiveness) | 1:77; 3:3; 4:18 (×2); 24:47 | High | A structural literary feature of Luke’s Gospel (liberation and forgiveness as one divine act) is mechanically destroyed by the target language’s lack of a single covering term, and this loss compounds across five key passages rather than occurring once. |
| 5 | Holy Spirit “filling”/“coming upon” language | 1:15, 35, 41, 67; 3:22; 4:1, 14, 18 | High | A collision not previously surfaced by the Romans baseline (which lacks comparable narrative Spirit-descent scenes); risk of readers mapping biblical Spirit-filling onto shamanic possession trance (跳大神/上身) is concrete and untreated until now. |
| 6 | Son of Man / Son of Heaven visual-structural proximity | throughout (9, 12, 17-19, 21-22, 24) | High | Compounds an existing Critical doctrinal risk (already flagged for Son of God in the Romans baseline) with a new, purely orthographic risk: 人子 and 天子 differ by a single character and are easy to misread or mistype, in addition to being easy to doctrinally conflate. |
| 7 | Hate-idiom (μισέω) | 14:26 | High | No Mandarin idiom exists for the Semitic relative-priority construction; the literal rendering directly collides with 孝 (filial piety), arguably the single most deeply held social-ethical value among the target audience’s cultural default. |
| 8 | Blessed/poor (μακάριος/πτωχός) | 6:20-22 (Beatitudes) | High | The 福 root’s overwhelming folk association with wealth/health/luck runs in the opposite direction from Luke’s paradoxical attachment of blessing to poverty and suffering; readers may resolve the paradox by quietly dropping it rather than sitting in the reversal. |
| 9 | Mercy/compassion (ἔλεος/σπλαγχνίζομαι) vs. 慈悲 | 1:50-78; 7:13; 10:33; 15:20 | High | Guanyin-associated 慈悲 is culturally the most emotionally resonant and immediately available Mandarin word for “compassion,” making it the single most tempting mistranslation a well-meaning but untrained translator could reach for. |
| 10 | Repentance (μετάνοια) vs. 忏悔 | 3:3, 8; 5:32; 13:3, 5; 15:7, 10; 17:3-4; 24:47 | High | 忏悔’s ritual-confession/karma-reduction associations are pervasive in everyday Chinese religious vocabulary; the doctrinal distance between “turning to a personal God” and “reducing accumulated karmic debt” is large and easily collapsed under time pressure. |
| 11 | Eternal life (ζωὴ αἰώνιος) vs. 长生不老 | 10:25; 18:18, 30 | High | Chinese cultural imagination has an unusually well-developed immortality-cultivation tradition (alchemy, qigong, folk elixir narratives) that is instantly available as a false-equivalence reading. |
| 12 | Opened understanding (διανοίγω) vs. 开悟 | 24:31, 45 | High | Occurs at the Gospel’s climactic resolution scene; a Chan-enlightenment misreading would relocate the entire epistemic event from Christ’s gracious gift to the disciples’ own achieved insight, exactly inverting the passage’s point. |
| 13 | Table fellowship and banquet face-dynamics | 5:29-32; 7:36-50; 14:7-14; 15:1-2; 19:1-10; 22:14-30 | High | Not a single lexical item but a pervasive cultural-pragmatic risk: without explicit framing, Chinese readers’ default banquet-hierarchy intuitions (seating order, face-preservation) will absorb these scenes as social-etiquette narratives rather than deliberate boundary-breaking acts of grace. |
| 14 | Mammon transliteration vs. moralizing paraphrase | 16:9-13 | High | If a translator substitutes a generic “money” paraphrase under time pressure, the entire rival-lordship structure of the passage (money as a competing master) collapses into flat “wealth is bad” moralism. |
| 15 | Savior (σωτήρ) vs. political-savior rhetoric | 1:47; 2:11 | Medium-High | Lower collision probability than the entries above (no single dominant competing Mandarin term crowds 救主 the way 慈悲 or 忏悔 crowd their counterparts), but the doctrinal stakes (conflating spiritual rescue with a this-worldly political-liberator figure) remain significant enough to warrant native-speaker-plus-theologian review at both occurrences. |
5. Full-Book Coverage Sweep
Every chapter of Luke was reviewed for linguistic-gap purposes. Chapters generating new gap-analysis findings are cross-referenced to the sections above; chapters below the threshold for a distinct new finding are explicitly confirmed as reviewed rather than omitted.
| Chapter(s) | New Gap Findings Generated | Status |
