Master Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Mandarin Doctrine Name | Supporting Passages (2 Thessalonians) | Risk | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Day of the Lord | 主的日子 | 1:7,10; 2:1-2 | Critical | Must not assimilate to secular 末日 (“doomsday”) or Buddhist 末法时代 (“age of Dharma decline”); this is a personal Lord’s specific future intervention, not impersonal cosmic decline. | Human theologian |
| 2 | The True and Counterfeit Coming (Parousia) | 基督真实的降临与那不法的人虚假的降临 | 2:1, 8, 9 | Critical | Same Mandarin core term (降临) required for both Christ’s true coming and the lawless one’s counterfeit coming, to preserve Paul’s deliberate parody; demoting v.9 to a lesser word destroys the parody. | Human theologian |
| 3 | The Man of Lawlessness | 那不法的人 | 2:3-4, 8-10 | Critical | Deliberate photo-negative of Christ’s true deity; 不法 must never soften to a social-etiquette infraction (失礼/规矩); figure must not be historically pinned to a past ruler. | Human theologian |
| 4 | The Apostasy / The Falling Away | 离道反教的事 | 2:3 | Critical | Definite, singular end-time falling-away from the true faith — not a political “rebellion” (叛乱/政变) resonant with dynastic-cycle narratives, nor a casual religious lapse. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The Restrainer Holding Back Lawlessness | 那拦阻不法之人显露的 | 2:6-7 | High | Greek’s neuter→masculine shift (personal-agent clue) is invisible in Mandarin’s gender-neutral 的-nominalization; requires supplementary theologian’s note on candidate referents. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The Mystery of Lawlessness | 不法的奥秘 | 2:7 | High | 奥秘 risks resonance with Daoist inner-alchemy esoteric knowledge (道教奥秘); must be taught as progressively disclosed redemptive history, not initiate-only secret technique. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Satan’s Counterfeit Power, Signs, and Wonders | 撒但的虚假异能、神迹和奇事 | 2:9-10 | Critical | NEVER use 神的大能 (reserved for God’s true power) for Satan’s counterfeit δύναμις; use 异能. 撒但 must remain personal, not diffused into folk-ghost (鬼) framing. | Human theologian |
| 8 | God’s Righteous Judgment | 神公义的判断 | 1:5; 2:12 | Critical | Introduces 公义 (God’s own governing/judging character) as distinct from baseline’s Critical forensic term 义; the two must never be substituted for one another. | Human theologian |
| 9 | God’s Just Repayment (Vengeance) on Persecutors | 神对逼迫者的报应 | 1:6, 8 | Critical | CUV’s 报应 collides with the baseline’s rejection of 报应 for its Buddhist/folk karmic-retribution connotations; mandatory clarifying note every occurrence: personal Judge’s willed repayment, not a self-balancing cosmic ledger. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Eternal Destruction | 永远的沉沦 | 1:9 | Critical | 沉沦 echoes the Buddhist idiom 苦海沉沦 (samsaric sinking with possible future escape/rebirth); must be taught as final, once-for-all exclusion from God’s presence. | Human theologian |
| 11 | God’s Judicial Hardening of Those Who Reject the Truth | 神审判性的使人迷惑 | 2:10-12 | High | Must preserve both judicial-hardening and moral-responsibility (“took pleasure in unrighteousness”) dimensions; structurally identical to Romans 1:24-28’s “God gave them over,” already taught in the baseline curriculum. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Perseverance under Persecution | 在逼迫中的忍耐 | 1:4, 6-7; 3:1-5 | High | 忍耐 must not be conflated with 忍辱, the Buddhist “perfection of patience” (one of the Six Pāramitās, merit-earning toward liberation); this endurance is Spirit-sustained and hope-grounded, flowing from grace already given. | Human theologian |
| 13 | God’s Faithfulness and Protection of the Persecuted | 神的信实与保护 | 3:2-3 | Medium | 脱离 (“deliver/be freed from”) must not drift metaphorically toward a soteriological “liberation from a suffering-cycle” register, per the baseline’s caution around 解脱. | Native speaker review |
| 14 | Assurance through Election and Sanctification | 藉着拣选与成圣得来的确据 | 2:13-14 | Critical | Reuses baseline Critical terms 拣选, 成圣, 圣灵 exactly; assurance is grounded in God’s electing choice and the Spirit’s sanctifying work, not self-cultivated moral achievement (Neo-Confucian sagehood caution carried over). | Human theologian |
| 15 | Standing Firm in the Traditions | 站立得稳,坚守所传的传统 | 2:15; 3:6 | Critical | 传统 risks collision with Confucian ancestral/ritual tradition, folk-religious tradition, and secular cultural-heritage usage; every occurrence requires a Critical-tier note distinguishing bounded apostolic teaching from inherited custom. Fuller gloss option: 使徒的教导. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Church Discipline toward the Idle/Disorderly | 对不按规矩而行者的教会纪律 | 3:6-15 | Medium | 不按规矩而行 must not read as generic Confucian ritual-propriety breach (缺乏礼节); it specifically names refusal to work while claiming to await the Day of the Lord, linking ch.3 ethics to ch.2 eschatology. 羞愧 is restorative shame, distinct from 面子 (social face-loss). | Native speaker review |
| 17 | Imitation of the Apostolic Example | 效法使徒的榜样 | 3:7, 9 | Medium | 效法 carries classical/Confucian resonance (“imitating the ancient sage-kings”); must be taught as imitation of a Spirit-empowered, gospel-shaped life, not independent Confucian moral self-cultivation. | Native speaker review |
| 18 | Obedience to the Gospel and Glory in Christ | 顺从福音并在基督里得荣耀 | 1:8-12; 2:14 | Medium | Reuses baseline Medium terms 福音 and 荣耀 exactly; low collision risk beyond strict cross-curriculum consistency with the Romans baseline. | Native speaker review |
| 19 | Thanksgiving and Fellowship among Believers | 感恩与弟兄团契 | 1:3; 3:16-18 | Low | Standard, low-risk vocabulary; minor risk of generic secular gratitude/greeting without explicit reference to God as the object of thanks. | Automated review |
| 20 | Christ’s Angelic Accompaniment at His Return | 基督与众天使一同降临 | 1:7 | Low | 天使 is a standard, established term with no significant folk-religion collision in this context. | Automated review |
Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage
2 Thessalonians 1 (Thanksgiving, Persecution, and Righteous Judgment)
| Doctrine | Verses | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving and Fellowship among Believers | 1:3 | Low | Opening thanksgiving; establishes 感恩 register for the whole letter. |
| Perseverance under Persecution | 1:4, 6-7 | High | Paul commends the Thessalonians’ 忍耐 amid ongoing affliction; anchors the doctrine before its return in 3:1-5. |
| God’s Righteous Judgment | 1:5 | Critical | Names the doctrine directly: their suffering is evidence of God’s coming 公义的判断. |
| God’s Just Repayment (Vengeance) on Persecutors | 1:6, 8 | Critical | 报应 language requires mandatory clarifying note (see matrix row 9). |
| Eternal Destruction | 1:9 | Critical | Final exclusion from God’s presence; 沉沦 collision risk with Buddhist idiom flagged. |
| Christ’s Angelic Accompaniment at His Return | 1:7 | Low | Sets visual/apocalyptic register for the Day of the Lord. |
| Obedience to the Gospel and Glory in Christ | 1:8-12 | Medium | Frames the whole chapter’s telos: glory to Christ in his saints. |
| The Day of the Lord (implied) | 1:7, 10 | Critical | ”When he comes” anticipates the full treatment in chapter 2; must be rendered with the same 主的日子/降临 vocabulary that chapter 2 will use. |
Coverage note: Chapter 1 is fully reviewed. It contributes new terminology (公义, 报应, 沉沦) not carried over unmodified from the Romans baseline and requires the highest concentration of Critical-tier theologian review in the letter’s opening section.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (Core Passage — Day of the Lord and the Man of Lawlessness)
| Doctrine | Verses | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Day of the Lord | 2:1-2 | Critical | Core passage’s opening concern: false claims that the Day has already come. |
| The True and Counterfeit Coming (Parousia) | 2:1, 8, 9 | Critical | The single most structurally important lexical-consistency requirement in the letter (see matrix row 2). |
| The Apostasy / The Falling Away | 2:3 | Critical | Precondition named before the man of lawlessness is revealed. |
| The Man of Lawlessness | 2:3-4, 8-10 | Critical | Central figure of the core passage; self-deifying usurper in the temple of God. |
| The Restrainer Holding Back Lawlessness | 2:6-7 | High | Grammatically significant restraining agent; exegetically contested referent. |
| The Mystery of Lawlessness | 2:7 | High | Already operative before public unveiling. |
| Satan’s Counterfeit Power, Signs, and Wonders | 2:9-10 | Critical | Counterfeit δύναμις; must never borrow the baseline’s 神的大能. |
| God’s Judicial Hardening of Those Who Reject the Truth | 2:10-12 | High | Closes the core passage with the judgment on those who refused to love the truth. |
| God’s Righteous Judgment | 2:12 | Critical | Second occurrence; the “condemned” (被定罪) outcome of judicial hardening. |
Coverage note: This is the theological anchor of the curriculum per the core passage designation, but is treated here as one fully-analyzed section within full-book scope, not the boundary of scope.
2 Thessalonians 2:13-17 (Assurance and the First Occurrence of “Traditions”)
| Doctrine | Verses | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assurance through Election and Sanctification | 2:13-14 | Critical | Reuses baseline Critical terms 拣选/成圣/圣灵 to ground assurance against the deception just described. |
| Obedience to the Gospel and Glory in Christ | 2:14 | Medium | ”Obtaining the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” via the gospel call. |
| Standing Firm in the Traditions | 2:15 | Critical | First occurrence of παράδοσις; introduces the doctrine that chapter 3 will resume. |
Coverage note: Fully reviewed; functions as the pastoral hinge between the apocalyptic core passage and the practical instructions of chapter 3.
2 Thessalonians 3 (Prayer, Protection, Traditions Resumed, and Church Discipline)
| Doctrine | Verses | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perseverance under Persecution | 3:1-5 | High | Paul requests prayer for deliverance from “wicked and evil men,” resuming ch.1’s theme. |
| God’s Faithfulness and Protection of the Persecuted | 3:2-3 | Medium | ”The Lord is faithful” who will guard against the evil one. |
| Standing Firm in the Traditions | 3:6 | Critical | Second occurrence; now applied to a specific disciplinary case (withdrawal from the idle). |
| Church Discipline toward the Idle/Disorderly | 3:6-15 | Medium | Practical outworking of eschatological teaching: refusal to work while claiming to await the Day of the Lord. |
| Imitation of the Apostolic Example | 3:7, 9 | Medium | Paul’s own labor as the pattern to imitate. |
| Thanksgiving and Fellowship among Believers | 3:16-18 | Low | Closing benediction; peace and grace formula. |
Coverage note: Chapter 3 is fully reviewed. Every verse-range contributes either a recurrence of a Critical/High doctrine already anchored in chapters 1-2 (persistence and traditions) or new Medium/Low practical vocabulary (church discipline, imitation). No verse range in chapter 3 was silently omitted.

Critical Risk Doctrines
The Day of the Lord
Mandarin name: 主的日子
Key terms: day of the Lord, coming, revealed, gathered together
Review routing: Human theologian
主的日子 must not be assimilated to the secular disaster-movie term 末日 (‘doomsday’) or the Buddhist eschatological concept 末法时代 (‘age of the decline of the Dharma’), both of which frame history’s end as an impersonal decline or catastrophe rather than a personal Lord’s specific, future intervention in judgment and salvation.
The True and Counterfeit Coming (Parousia)
Mandarin name: 基督真实的降临与那不法的人虚假的降临
Key terms: parousia, coming, appearing of his coming
Review routing: Human theologian
Paul deliberately uses the identical Greek word παρουσία for both Christ’s true coming (2:1,8) and the lawless one’s counterfeit coming (2:9). The Mandarin package must render both occurrences with the same core term (降临), adding only a contextual clarifying clause for the counterfeit instance; using a demoted word for v.9 (as CUV itself does, shifting to 来) destroys Paul’s intentional parody and could leave the false ‘coming’ looking like a lesser but still legitimate divine event rather than a satanic imitation.
The Man of Lawlessness
Mandarin name: 那不法的人
Key terms: man of lawlessness, lawlessness, son of destruction, opposes and exalts himself
Review routing: Human theologian
This figure is the deliberate photo-negative of Christ’s true, eternal deity: a future, singular human figure who self-deifies and demands worship. Must not be historically pinned to any past ruler nor treated as merely another instance of Chinese imperial Mandate-of-Heaven-derived quasi-divine status (already a Critical concern for deity_of_christ/sonship_of_christ in the baseline); the Mandarin term 不法 must never be softened to a generic social-rule infraction (规矩) or Confucian ritual-propriety failure (失礼).
The Apostasy / The Falling Away
Mandarin name: 离道反教的事
Key terms: apostasy, rebellion, the falling away
Review routing: Human theologian
Must be taught as a definite, singular, end-time falling-away from the true faith preceding the man of lawlessness’s revealing — not a vague political ‘rebellion’ (叛乱/政变, which risks resonance with Chinese dynastic-rebellion narratives and the cyclical order-chaos-order historiographical pattern already flagged in the baseline’s fulfillment_of_prophecy entry) nor a casual, generic religious lapse.
Satan’s Counterfeit Power, Signs, and Wonders
Mandarin name: 撒但的虚假异能、神迹和奇事
Key terms: Satan, counterfeit power, signs and wonders, activity/working
Review routing: Human theologian
The same Greek root δύναμις denotes both God’s true saving power (Romans 1:16, pinned in the baseline as 神的大能, Critical) and Satan’s counterfeit power here; the Mandarin package must NEVER use 神的大能 for the latter, using 异能 instead to preserve the divine/demonic distinction the baseline’s own vocabulary architecture depends on. Additionally, 撒但 must remain a personal proper name for the chief adversary and must not be diffused into an impersonal folk-demon or ghost framing (鬼), which would flatten the spiritual-warfare theology of this verse. CUV’s ἐνέργεια rendering 运动 has drifted in modern Mandarin to mean ‘exercise’ or ‘political movement’ and must be modernized to 运行/作为.
God’s Righteous Judgment
Mandarin name: 神公义的判断
Key terms: righteous judgment, judge, judgment
Review routing: Human theologian
This doctrine introduces 公义 (God’s own just, governing/judging character and action) as a term functionally distinct from the baseline’s Critical term 义 (forensic right standing credited to a believer by faith). The two must never be substituted for one another: collapsing 公义 into 义 would blur the justification doctrine already established as Critical in the Romans baseline, while collapsing 义 into 公义 would turn the believer’s credited righteousness into merely an instance of divine governance rather than a personal gift.
God’s Just Repayment (Vengeance) on Persecutors
Mandarin name: 神对逼迫者的报应
Key terms: repay, vengeance, affliction to those who afflict you
Review routing: Human theologian
CUV renders both ἀνταποδίδωμι (1:6) and ἐκδίκησις (1:8) with 报应 (bàoyìng) — the very term the baseline translation_memory.json explicitly rejects under its sin entry for carrying Buddhist/folk connotations of impersonal karmic retribution that automatically balances across a person’s fortune or lineage. Retained here for CUV/Romans 12:19 continuity, but every occurrence requires a mandatory clarifying note: God’s repayment is the personal, willed act of a personal Judge repaying according to what people have actually done in response to the gospel, not an impersonal cosmic ledger that self-balances irrespective of a personal Judge’s will.
Eternal Destruction
Mandarin name: 永远的沉沦
Key terms: eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
永远沉沦 uses 沉沦 (chénlún, ‘to sink down’), the same verb at the center of the common Chinese Buddhist idiom 苦海沉沦 (‘sinking in the sea of suffering’), which describes beings trapped in the cyclical suffering of samsara with the possibility of future rebirth or eventual escape. Must be taught as a final, once-for-all exclusion from God’s presence — not an ongoing, cyclical suffering-state from which further escape or rebirth remains possible.
Assurance through Election and Sanctification
Mandarin name: 藉着拣选与成圣得来的确据
Key terms: God chose you, sanctification of the Spirit, belief in the truth
Review routing: Human theologian
Reuses the baseline’s Critical terms 拣选 (election), 成圣 (sanctification), and 圣灵 (Holy Spirit) exactly. Assurance amid persecution and end-time deception is grounded in God’s electing choice and the Spirit’s ongoing sanctifying work — not in self-cultivated moral achievement, echoing the baseline’s caution against reading 成圣 through the lens of Neo-Confucian self-cultivation into sagehood.
Standing Firm in the Traditions
Mandarin name: 站立得稳,坚守所传的传统
Key terms: stand firm, hold fast, the traditions you were taught
Review routing: Human theologian
传统 risks collision with Confucian ancestral/ritual tradition (传统礼教), generic Chinese folk-religious tradition (民间传统信仰), and secular cultural-heritage usage — all of which would dilute Paul’s specific claim to personal apostolic authority behind the content transmitted. Every occurrence requires a Critical-tier clarifying note: this is authoritative apostolic teaching received from Paul and the apostles, transmitted orally or in writing, not inherited ancestral custom or generic cultural heritage. Fuller gloss option where needed: 使徒的教导.
High Risk Doctrines
The Restrainer Holding Back Lawlessness
Mandarin name: 那拦阻不法之人显露的
Key terms: restrainer, what/who restrains, appointed time
Review routing: Human theologian
Greek shifts the participle from neuter (τὸ κατέχον, ‘the restraining thing’, v.6) to masculine (ὁ κατέχων, ‘the one restraining’, v.7) — a grammatical clue many interpreters use to argue for a personal restraining agent. Mandarin’s gender-neutral 的-nominalization (那拦阻的) cannot reproduce this shift, so the exegetical possibility of a personal restrainer (candidates include the Holy Spirit, an angel, civil government, or apostolic proclamation) is invisible in translation without a supplementary theologian’s note.
The Mystery of Lawlessness
Mandarin name: 不法的奥秘
Key terms: mystery of lawlessness, already at work
Review routing: Human theologian
奥秘 (àomì) also names restricted, initiate-only esoteric knowledge in Daoist inner-alchemy traditions (道教奥秘); this doctrine must be taught as God’s redemptive plan progressively disclosed in history, with lawlessness already secretly operative before its public unveiling — not an ongoing secret accessible only through special spiritual practice or technique.
God’s Judicial Hardening of Those Who Reject the Truth
Mandarin name: 神审判性的使人迷惑
Key terms: strong delusion, believe the lie, took pleasure in unrighteousness
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s active sending of a deluding influence must not read as a neutral, non-judicial ‘mistake’ (错误/错谬); this is righteous judgment actively deepening the self-chosen blindness of those who rejected the truth, structurally identical to Romans 1:24-28’s ‘God gave them over’ pattern already taught in the baseline Romans curriculum. Teaching must preserve both the judicial-hardening dimension and the moral-responsibility dimension (they ‘took pleasure in’ unrighteousness, an active delight, not passive drifting).
Perseverance under Persecution
Mandarin name: 在逼迫中的忍耐
Key terms: endurance, affliction, persecution, faith and endurance
Review routing: Human theologian
忍耐 must not be conflated with 忍辱, the Buddhist ‘perfection of patience’ — one of the Six Pāramitās, a self-cultivated virtue that accumulates merit toward liberation from suffering. Biblical endurance in this letter is Spirit-sustained and hope-grounded, flowing from grace already given (1:2,12) rather than a merit-earning discipline pursued toward one’s own liberation.
Medium Risk Doctrines
God’s Faithfulness and Protection of the Persecuted
Mandarin name: 神的信实与保护
Key terms: the Lord is faithful, guard, deliver
Review routing: Native speaker review
God’s faithful guarding of believers ‘from the evil one’ is low-collision vocabulary, but 脱离 (‘deliver/be freed from’) must not be extended by loose metaphorical drift toward a soteriological ‘liberation from a suffering-cycle’ register, a caution the baseline already applies around 解脱 under the salvation doctrine.
Church Discipline toward the Idle/Disorderly
Mandarin name: 对不按规矩而行者的教会纪律
Key terms: disorderly/idle, warn as a brother, feel ashamed
Review routing: Native speaker review
不按规矩而行 must not be read as a generic breach of Confucian ritual-propriety/social etiquette (缺乏礼节); it specifically names refusal to work while claiming to await the Day of the Lord, linking chapter 3’s practical ethics to chapter 2’s eschatology. 羞愧 (restorative, inward shame aimed at repentance and reconciliation) must be distinguished from social face-loss (面子) dynamics already flagged in the baseline’s glory entry.
Imitation of the Apostolic Example
Mandarin name: 效法使徒的榜样
Key terms: imitate us, worked night and day
Review routing: Native speaker review
效法 carries classical/Confucian resonance (‘imitating the ancient sage-kings’, 效法先王); must be taught as imitation of a Spirit-empowered, gospel-shaped pattern of life modeled by Paul, not independent Confucian moral self-cultivation achieved by emulating a virtuous exemplar.
Obedience to the Gospel and Glory in Christ
Mandarin name: 顺从福音并在基督里得荣耀
Key terms: obey the gospel, glorified in his saints, glory of our Lord Jesus Christ
Review routing: Native speaker review
Reuses the baseline’s Medium terms 福音 and 荣耀 exactly; low collision risk beyond maintaining strict consistency with the Romans-baseline renderings across both curricula.
Low Risk Doctrines
Thanksgiving and Fellowship among Believers
Mandarin name: 感恩与弟兄团契
Key terms: we ought to thank God, brothers
Review routing: Automated review
Standard, low-risk vocabulary; minor risk of generic secular gratitude or greeting without explicit reference to God as the object of thanks.
Christ’s Angelic Accompaniment at His Return
Mandarin name: 基督与众天使一同降临
Key terms: his mighty angels
Review routing: Automated review
天使 is a standard, established term with no significant folk-religion collision in this context.
