Doctrine Analysis

11 Doctrine Analysis — Philippians (English–Mandarin)

Purpose

This document provides the full doctrine matrix for Philippians 1–4, chapter by chapter, in a form consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (same 24 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing). It supplies the theological and translation-risk grounding that the registry’s machine-readable entries compress into short notes. Per the PRD Phase 1 full-book-coverage mandate, every chapter of Philippians is reviewed below; the core passage (2:1–11) is treated as the theological anchor of the book, not as the boundary of analysis.

Chapter 1 — Introduction, Thanksgiving, and the Advance of the Gospel through Suffering

Philippians 1 introduces Paul’s imprisonment, his thanksgiving for the Philippians’ partnership, and the paradox that his chains have advanced the gospel — establishing the “joy in suffering” and “partnership in the gospel” doctrines that recur through the book, while also opening the citizenship-in-heaven and sainthood themes picked up fully in chapters 2–4.

DoctrineRiskSupporting passages (this book)Translation riskReview routing
Sainthood and the Corporate ChurchHigh1:1圣徒 must remain corporate (all believers at Philippi), never drifting toward the Confucian 圣人 (sage) category reserved for a tiny number of morally perfected figures.Human theologian
Church Leadership and OfficesMedium1:1监督 (overseer) also means secular administrative “supervision/inspection”; must be clarified as ecclesial office, not government inspection role.Native speaker review
Thanksgiving and PrayerLow1:3-4感恩 is standard; minor risk of generic secular gratitude detached from God as object.Automated review
Partnership in the GospelMedium1:5, 1:7Paul’s language of shared participation (κοινωνία) in the gospel must be rendered with active-partnership force, not mere passive fellowship-feeling.Native speaker review
Assurance of Salvation and the Book of LifeHigh1:6”He who began a good work… will complete it” must be read as God’s sustaining grace, not a fatalistic guarantee resembling a bureaucratic underworld ledger.Human theologian
Day of Christ and Future HopeMedium1:6, 1:10基督的日子 must not be conflated with cyclical dynastic-age eschatology (治乱循环) or a future-expected-savior pattern (弥勒).Native speaker review
Joy in Suffering and ImprisonmentHigh1:12-14, 1:18, 1:29-30Paul frames imprisonment (捆锁) as an occasion for boldness and joy, the opposite of the shame/loss-of-face (面子) framing such circumstances would ordinarily carry; 受苦 must not collapse into the Buddhist First Noble Truth’s suffering-as-condition-to-escape.Human theologian
Unity and Humility in the ChurchHigh1:27”Stand firm in one spirit, one mind” (同心) introduces the same-mindedness theme fully developed in ch. 2; must be anchored to Christ, not Confucian social-harmony (和为贵) for hierarchy’s sake.Human theologian
Citizenship in HeavenCritical1:27”Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel” (πολιτεύεσθε) is the verbal root of the citizenship noun fully developed in 3:20; even this early verbal echo requires the same politically sensitive care around civic-allegiance language.Human theologian

Chapter 1 coverage note: every doctrine active in this chapter is captured above; no additional load-bearing terms were found beyond those already logged in 08_core_glossary.md Part A/B.

Chapter 2 — The Mind of Christ: Kenosis, Exaltation, and Outworked Salvation

Philippians 2 contains the core passage (2:1–11) and is the doctrinal center of gravity for the entire book: the kenosis hymn (2:6–8), the exaltation and universal confession of Lordship (2:9–11), the command to unity and humility (2:1–4), the call to work out salvation (2:12–13), and the sacrificial ministry language of libation (2:17) and sent-messenger office (2:25).

DoctrineRiskSupporting passagesTranslation riskReview routing
Unity and Humility in the ChurchHigh2:1-4, 2:14谦卑 (not the weaker 谦虚) must be grounded in Christ’s example (2:5-8); 慈悲怜悯 collides directly with the standard Buddhist term for Guanyin’s compassion and requires a mandatory clarifying note every occurrence.Human theologian
The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)Critical2:5-8虚己 must never suggest Christ subtracted or lost his divine nature; 奴仆的形像 describes a real, permanent assumption of servant-status, not a temporary guise (never 化身/下凡/转世).Human theologian
Deity of ChristCritical2:6神的形像 and 与神同等 assert essential, pre-existent, ontological deity — never softened to “an especially exalted man,” and never analogized to the emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven-derived quasi-divine legitimacy.Human theologian
Humanity of ChristHigh2:7样子/外貌 (outward form), read apart from 人的样式 (real likeness), risks a Docetic “mere appearance” reading and collapse into the bodhisattva-manifestation trope (化身/下凡) already forbidden by the baseline.Human theologian
Lordship of Christ and Universal ConfessionCritical2:9-11主 must never soften toward 主人/老爷; the universal confession (无不口称/耶稣是主) must match the baseline’s Romans 10:9 pattern exactly per the cross-document consistency rule.Human theologian
Sanctification as God’s Ongoing Work (Working Out Salvation)Critical2:12-13作成你们得救的工夫, isolated from 2:13, risks a works-based-salvation misreading directly analogous to the baseline’s forbidden 修成正果; must always be paired with “God who works in you.”Human theologian
Sacrificial Gospel Ministry and ServiceHigh2:17浇奠 collides with the Chinese ritual practice of pouring wine/liquor offerings to ancestors or deities (奠酒祭祖); must be clarified as metaphorical self-giving in ministry.Human theologian
Church Leadership and OfficesMedium2:25Epaphroditus (使者/差人) must never be rendered 使徒, which would wrongly place him in Paul’s own technical apostolic office.Native speaker review
Joy in Suffering and ImprisonmentHigh2:17-18Paul’s joy “even if I am poured out” continues the ch.1 suffering-joy paradox; same Buddhist-suffering-framework caution applies.Human theologian

Chapter 2 coverage note: this chapter carries the highest doctrinal density in the book and anchors the core passage. All doctrines above are fully documented; no residual load-bearing terms remain outside 08_core_glossary.md.

Chapter 3 — Righteousness through Faith, Knowing Christ, and the Heavenly Goal

Philippians 3 pivots to polemic against confidence in the law/flesh, Paul’s testimony of counting all things as loss for the sake of knowing Christ, the athletic pressing-on metaphor, and the closing declaration of heavenly citizenship and future bodily transformation.

DoctrineRiskSupporting passagesTranslation riskReview routing
Warning Against False Teachers (Judaizers)Medium3:2-6Paul’s rhetorical reversal (an insult historically used of Gentiles, “dogs,” 犬类/狗, redirected onto Judaizing teachers) is likely lost without a translator’s note, though the base insult functions comparably in Chinese.Native speaker review
Righteousness by Faith versus the LawCritical3:2-9The sharpest law-versus-faith contrast for 义 in the curriculum; the baseline caution against 义 as the Confucian virtue (仁义礼智信), achieved through moral cultivation, applies with maximal force at 3:9.Human theologian
Knowledge of Christ as Supreme ValueHigh3:7-11认识基督 must be distinguished from Buddhist/Daoist contemplative “awakening” (悟) attained through meditative practice and from ancient Gnosticism’s elite, secret γνῶσις; this is relational knowing available to every believer.Human theologian
Resurrection and Bodily TransformationCritical3:10-11, 3:21复活 must never be rendered 轮回, 投胎, or 还魂; bodily transformation is a once-for-all event, not a cycle of rebirth into successive bodies.Human theologian
Pressing on toward the Goal in ChristHigh3:12-16竭力追求, unpaired from “because Christ Jesus has laid hold of me” (3:12), risks self-effort-achieves-righteousness readings echoing 修成正果; 完全人 must be distinguished from the Daoist 真人 (“perfected being”) and Buddhist attainment states.Human theologian
Citizenship in HeavenCritical3:20-21国民 carries strong modern PRC nation-state citizenship connotations; teaching that believers’ primary civic allegiance belongs to heaven is politically sensitive and must not be read as instructing rejection of legitimate earthly civic duties.Human theologian
Day of Christ and Future HopeMedium3:20-21Christ’s return as “Savior” (救主) must not be conflated with a future-expected-savior pattern (弥勒) or cyclical eschatology.Native speaker review

Chapter 3 coverage note: all doctrines active in this chapter are documented above, consistent with the registry; the chapter contributes no additional doctrine categories beyond those already logged.

Chapter 4 — Contentment, Peace, Virtue, and Partnership in Giving

Philippians 4 closes with practical exhortations to unity among named individuals, the peace of God guarding anxious hearts, a catalogue of virtues, and Paul’s reflection on contentment and the Philippians’ financial partnership — introducing the book’s second Critical syncretism risk (contentment) alongside citizenship in heaven.

DoctrineRiskSupporting passagesTranslation riskReview routing
Unity and Humility in the ChurchHigh4:2-3Euodia and Syntyche are urged to “agree in the Lord” (同心); same caution against a Confucian social-harmony (和为贵) reading applies.Human theologian
Sainthood and the Corporate ChurchHigh4:21-22圣徒 closing greetings reinforce the corporate, non-elite sense established in 1:1.Human theologian
Prayer and the Peace of GodMedium4:5-7平安 retains the baseline caution against the folk-amulet/general-well-being sense; 出人意外的 must be retained to mark supernatural, guarding peace, not self-achieved tranquility.Native speaker review
Thanksgiving and PrayerLow4:6Standard, low-risk vocabulary paired with 平安 caution above.Automated review
Christian Ethics and VirtueMedium4:8-9德行, Paul’s only NT use of this classical Greek virtue-word, is a genuine point of contact with Confucian 德 but must remain anchored to the Christ-centered framing of 4:9, not free-standing self-cultivation ethics.Native speaker review
Contentment in All CircumstancesCritical4:11-13知足 is a celebrated Daoist/Confucian virtue (知足常乐; 安分守己); Paul’s contentment is Christ-empowered dependence (4:13), not self-generated detachment. 秘诀 additionally collides with Chinese esoteric master-to-disciple transmission concepts (秘传, 口诀) — the single highest-priority new syncretism risk in this book.Human theologian
Grace and Generosity in Gospel PartnershipMedium4:10-20The Philippians’ gift risks being read as merit-accumulation (功德) or reciprocal social-debt repayment (人情/还人情) rather than grace-motivated partnership; God’s supply (4:19) is grace’s continuing provision, not an earned reward.Native speaker review
Partnership in the GospelMedium4:14-18通财 (the giving-and-receiving ledger idiom) risks collision with Chinese 人情 reciprocity culture; must be clarified as gospel partnership, not social-debt accounting.Native speaker review
Sacrificial Gospel Ministry and ServiceHigh4:18馨香之祭 risks association with literal ancestor/temple-offering ritual (上香, 祭祖); must be clarified as metaphorical, not literal ritual offering to appease or gain merit.Human theologian
Joy in Suffering and ImprisonmentHigh4:4”Rejoice in the Lord always” closes the book’s joy theme; 喜乐 must remain distinct from circumstance-contingent 快乐/幸福.Human theologian

Chapter 4 coverage note: all doctrines active in this chapter are documented above; no chapter of Philippians was found to contribute zero new doctrinal load — each chapter’s contribution is explicitly recorded in this document.

Critical Risk Doctrines

The Incarnation and Self-Emptying of Christ (Kenosis)

Mandarin name: 基督的道成肉身与自我谦卑(虚己)
Key terms: self_emptying, form_of_god, form_of_a_servant, equal_with_god, thing_to_be_grasped, likeness_of_men, outward_form, incarnation
Review routing: Human theologian

虚己 (self-emptying) must never suggest Christ subtracted or lost his divine nature; the baseline’s Incarnation forbidden-substitution list (never 化身, 下凡, 转世 — a deity’s temporary, repeatable manifestation) applies with full force here, since μορφὴν δούλου/奴仆的形像 describes real, permanent assumption of servant-status, not a temporary guise.

Deity of Christ

Mandarin name: 基督的神性
Key terms: form_of_god, equal_with_god, son_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian

神的形像 and 与神同等 must be taught as essential, pre-existent, ontological deity, not an honorary or attained status comparable to the historic Chinese emperor’s Mandate-of-Heaven-derived quasi-divine legitimacy; must never be softened to ‘an especially exalted man.‘

Lordship of Christ and Universal Confession

Mandarin name: 基督的主权与普世承认
Key terms: lord, highly_exalted, name_above_every_name, every_knee_shall_bow, confess_lordship
Review routing: Human theologian

主 must never soften toward 主人 or 老爷 (feudal honorific for a landlord/official); the universal confession 无不口称/耶稣是主 must match the baseline’s Romans 10:9 confession-verb pattern exactly, per the Theological Consistency Rules requiring identical rendering of confession-of-Lordship language across all curriculum documents.

Righteousness by Faith versus the Law

Mandarin name: 因信而得的义,而非靠律法
Key terms: righteousness, righteousness_through_faith_in_christ, law, faith, knowledge_of_christ, rubbish, circumcision, dogs
Review routing: Human theologian

Philippians 3:9 is the sharpest law-versus-faith contrast for 义 anywhere in this curriculum, since Paul explicitly names and rejects law-based righteousness in the same verse he affirms faith-based righteousness; the baseline caution against reading 义 as the Confucian virtue of the Five Constant Virtues (仁义礼智信), achieved through moral cultivation, applies here with maximal force.

Sanctification as God’s Ongoing Work (Working Out Salvation)

Mandarin name: 靠着神的工作作成救恩
Key terms: working_out_salvation, salvation, power_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian

作成你们得救的工夫, read in isolation, risks a works-based-salvation misreading directly analogous to the baseline’s forbidden substitution 修成正果 (cultivating to attain enlightenment/immortality through spiritual practice) for justification; 2:12 must always be taught paired with 2:13 (‘for it is God who works in you’) to prevent this collision.

Contentment in All Circumstances

Mandarin name: 凡事知足
Key terms: contentment, learned_the_secret, who_strengthens_me
Review routing: Human theologian

知足 is a celebrated Daoist and Confucian virtue term (知足常乐, echoing Laozi’s teaching on desirelessness and non-striving; also 安分守己, accepting one’s fixed social station). Paul’s contentment is Christ-empowered dependence (‘him who strengthens me,’ 4:13), not self-generated detachment or passive social acceptance. 秘诀 additionally collides with Chinese esoteric master-to-disciple transmission concepts (秘传, 口诀) — this is the single highest-priority new syncretism risk introduced by Philippians.

Citizenship in Heaven

Mandarin name: 天上的国民身份
Key terms: citizenship_in_heaven, savior, body_of_humiliation_glory, kingdom_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian

国民 carries strong modern PRC nation-state citizenship connotations (cf. 中华人民共和国国民; historically 国民党). Teaching that believers’ primary civic allegiance belongs to heaven is politically sensitive in a mainland Chinese context and requires explicit, careful wording that this reframes rather than instructs rejection of legitimate earthly civic duties — comparable in gravity to the baseline’s 天子/Mandate-of-Heaven cautions.

Resurrection and Bodily Transformation

Mandarin name: 复活与身体的改变
Key terms: resurrection, body_of_humiliation_glory, power_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian

复活 must never be rendered 轮回 (reincarnation cycle), 投胎 (rebirth into a new womb), or 还魂 (folk ghost-story reanimation); the future bodily transformation of 3:21 is a once-for-all event, not a cycle of rebirth into successive bodies.

High Risk Doctrines

Humanity of Christ

Mandarin name: 基督的人性
Key terms: likeness_of_men, outward_form, form_of_a_servant
Review routing: Human theologian

样子/外貌 (outward form), if isolated from 人的样式 (real likeness), risks a Docetic reading where Christ’s humanity was mere appearance; also risks collapse into the 化身/下凡 bodhisattva-manifestation trope already forbidden in the baseline Incarnation notes.

Unity and Humility in the Church

Mandarin name: 教会中的合一与谦卑
Key terms: same_mindedness, humility, selfish_ambition, empty_conceit, regard_others_interests, fellowship_of_the_spirit, affection_and_compassion
Review routing: Human theologian

谦卑 (not the weaker 谦虚) must be anchored to Christ’s example (2:5-8), not read as Confucian ritual self-effacement performed to preserve social hierarchy and face (面子); 同心 must be anchored to ‘in Christ Jesus’ rather than the Confucian social-harmony ideal (和为贵) pursued to maintain hierarchy/order; 慈悲怜悯 collides directly with the standard Chinese Buddhist term for Guanyin’s compassion and requires a clarifying note every occurrence.

Joy in Suffering and Imprisonment

Mandarin name: 患难与监禁中的喜乐
Key terms: joy, suffering, bonds_chains, gain_loss
Review routing: Human theologian

受苦/苦 shares its character with the Buddhist First Noble Truth (‘all life is suffering,’ 一切皆苦), where suffering is a condition to be transcended through detachment/enlightenment; Philippians teaches suffering as a gracious gift and site of joy and participation in Christ, the theological opposite. 喜乐 must also be kept distinct from circumstance-contingent 快乐/幸福 and from the folk-fortune 福 semantic field already flagged in the baseline’s gospel note.

Pressing on toward the Goal in Christ

Mandarin name: 在基督里竭力奔向目标
Key terms: press_on, prize, goal, mature_perfect, calling
Review routing: Human theologian

竭力追求, if not paired with 3:12’s clarification (‘because Christ Jesus has laid hold of me’), risks reading as self-effort achieving righteousness or perfection, echoing the forbidden 修成正果 works-attainment pattern; 完全人 must also be distinguished from the Daoist ‘perfected being’ ideal (真人) and Buddhist attainment states.

Sacrificial Gospel Ministry and Service

Mandarin name: 献祭式的福音事工
Key terms: poured_out_libation, sacrifice_and_service_of_faith, fragrant_acceptable_sacrifice
Review routing: Human theologian

浇奠 collides with the Chinese ritual practice of pouring wine/liquor offerings to ancestors or deities (奠酒祭祖); 祭 throughout collides with ancestor-veneration and temple-offering vocabulary (祭祖, 上香). Both must be clarified as metaphors for sacrificial self-giving in gospel ministry, never literal ritual offerings performed to appease or gain merit with ancestors, deities, or spirits.

Assurance of Salvation and the Book of Life

Mandarin name: 得救的确据与生命册
Key terms: book_of_life, salvation, day_of_christ
Review routing: Human theologian

生命册 risks direct confusion with the Chinese folk-religious/Daoist underworld ledger 生死簿 (the register of fated lifespan kept by underworld officials/Yama, a trope familiar from works such as Journey to the West); the biblical book of life is God’s gracious register of the redeemed, not a fatalistic bureaucratic ledger administered by underworld officials through karmic accounting.

Knowledge of Christ as Supreme Value

Mandarin name: 认识基督为至宝
Key terms: knowledge_of_christ, gain_loss, rubbish
Review routing: Human theologian

认识基督 must be distinguished from Buddhist/Daoist contemplative ‘awakening’ (悟) attained through meditative practice, and from ancient Gnosticism’s technical γνῶσις as secret, elite salvific knowledge; this is relational knowing of a person, received through faith-union, available to every believer without esoteric initiation.

Sainthood and the Corporate Church

Mandarin name: 蒙召作圣徒与教会群体
Key terms: saints, fellowship, holy
Review routing: Human theologian

圣徒 must remain a corporate designation for all believers at Philippi, not implying the elevated Confucian 圣人 (sage) category reserved for a tiny number of morally perfected figures such as Confucius (至圣); reuse the baseline Sainthood caution exactly.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Partnership in the Gospel

Mandarin name: 在福音事工上的伙伴关系
Key terms: partnership_in_gospel, shared_in_affliction, account_of_giving_receiving, fragrant_acceptable_sacrifice, fellowship
Review routing: Native speaker review

The commercial-ledger idiom 通财 (4:15) risks being read through the lens of Chinese 人情 (social-debt reciprocity) culture — the practice of ‘还人情’ (repaying a social debt/favor) — rather than as grace-motivated gospel partnership; the offering language of 4:18 (馨香之祭) additionally risks association with literal ancestor/temple-offering ritual (上香, 祭祖).

Church Leadership and Offices

Mandarin name: 教会的监督与执事职分
Key terms: overseers_and_deacons, servant_paul, messenger, apostle
Review routing: Native speaker review

监督 also carries the ordinary secular sense of government/administrative ‘supervision/inspection’ and must be clarified as an ecclesial office; 使者/差人 (Epaphroditus, 2:25) must never be rendered 使徒, which would wrongly place him in Paul’s own technical apostolic office.

Prayer and the Peace of God

Mandarin name: 祷告与神所赐的平安
Key terms: peace_surpassing_understanding, anxiety, lord_is_at_hand, peace
Review routing: Native speaker review

平安 retains the baseline caution against the folk-amulet/general-well-being sense used in everyday greetings and protective charms; the qualifier 出人意外的 must be retained to mark this as a supernatural, guarding peace rather than ordinary tranquility achievable by one’s own effort.

Day of Christ and Future Hope

Mandarin name: 基督的日子与末世盼望
Key terms: day_of_christ, resurrection, savior
Review routing: Native speaker review

基督的日子 must not be conflated with cyclical dynastic-age eschatology (治乱循环) or with a future-expected-savior pattern; reuse the baseline’s Messianic Promise caution against conflating Christ’s already-accomplished, once-for-all coming with a figure like Maitreya (弥勒), expected to appear in a future age.

Christian Ethics and Virtue

Mandarin name: 基督徒的美德与操守
Key terms: virtue, anxiety, mature_perfect
Review routing: Native speaker review

德行 is the foundational Confucian moral-cultivation term; this is a genuine point of contact (Paul’s only NT use of this classical Greek virtue-word) rather than a pure collision, but must remain anchored to the Christ-centered framing of 4:9 so it is not taught as free-standing Confucian self-cultivation ethics detached from Christ.

Grace and Generosity in Gospel Partnership

Mandarin name: 恩典与在伙伴关系中的慷慨
Key terms: grace, account_of_giving_receiving, fragrant_acceptable_sacrifice, partnership_in_gospel
Review routing: Native speaker review

The Philippians’ financial gift risks being read as merit-accumulation (功德) or as reciprocal social-debt repayment (人情/还人情) rather than grace-motivated gospel partnership; 4:19’s promise that God will supply their need must be taught as grace’s continuing provision, not a reward earned by their giving.

Warning Against False Teachers (Judaizers)

Mandarin name: 防备假教师的警诫
Key terms: dogs, circumcision, righteousness, law
Review routing: Native speaker review

Paul’s rhetorical reversal (an insult historically used of Gentiles, ‘dogs,’ redirected onto Judaizing teachers) is likely lost in translation without a translator’s note, though the base insult (狗) functions comparably in Chinese; the doctrinal core (law-based confidence rejected in favor of Christ) is the higher-priority risk, covered under ‘Righteousness by Faith versus the Law.‘

Low Risk Doctrines

Thanksgiving and Prayer

Mandarin name: 感恩与祷告
Key terms: thanksgiving, exhort, peace_surpassing_understanding
Review routing: Automated review

感恩 is standard, low-risk vocabulary; minor risk of generic secular gratitude expressed without explicit reference to God as its object.
