Biblical Theme Map

10 Biblical Theme Map — 1 Corinthians (Full Book) — English → Bengali

Purpose

This document maps the ten designated curriculum doctrines onto the letter’s structure, traces the letter’s major themes as canonical threads running from the Old Testament through 1 Corinthians into the rest of the New Testament (with particular attention to the Romans curriculum already certified for Bengali), and identifies where these theme threads intersect with Bengali cultural-religious categories requiring translation sensitivity. It complements analysis/09_cross_reference_analysis.md, which documents citation-level cross-references; this document documents theme-level structure and canonical connection.

Section 1 — The Ten Curriculum Doctrines Mapped to the Letter’s Structure

#DoctrinePrimary ChaptersCore VersesCanonical ConnectionsBengali Sensitivity Snapshot
1The Resurrection of Christ and Believers15 (also 6:14)15:1-58Isaiah 25:8; Hosea 13:14; Genesis 2:7; Daniel 12:2; Romans 6:4-5; 8:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Revelation 20:4-6Critical. পুনরুত্থান vs. পুনর্জন্ম distinction is the sharpest apologetic line in the whole curriculum, addressing both Hindu rebirth cosmology and the Islamic denial of Christ’s death.
2Christian Unity versus Factionalism1-4; 11:17-34; 121:10-17; 3:1-9; 11:18Psalm 133; John 17:20-23; Romans 12:3-5; 15:5-7; Ephesians 4:1-6High. Confronts guru/pir-following party spirit and caste/communal fragmentation with a single-body ecclesiology.
3The Cross as Wisdom and Power1-21:18-25; 2:1-5Isaiah 29:14; 53:1-12; Romans 1:16-17; Colossians 2:2-3High. প্রজ্ঞা/সামর্থ্য must avoid Shakta শক্তি and jnana-marga associations already flagged in the glossary.
4Church Discipline and Holiness5-65:1-13; 6:9-11,18-20Deuteronomy 17:7; Leviticus 18; Matthew 18:15-17; Romans 6:19-22High. পবিত্রীকরণ and the temple-of-the-Spirit metaphor (মন্দির + mandatory note) carry the doctrinal weight.
5Marriage and Singleness77:1-40Genesis 2:18-24; Matthew 19:3-12; Ephesians 5:22-33Medium-High. Widow-remarriage counsel (7:39-40) sits against Bengali social taboo; arranged-marriage custom risks reframing pastoral counsel as universal prescription.
6Christian Liberty and Idol Meat8-108:1-13; 10:14-33Deuteronomy 6:4; Exodus 20:3-5; Romans 14:1-15:6; Acts 15:29Critical. Directly names living Hindu পূজা practice; প্রতিমাপূজা is a load-bearing, unavoidable collision term.
7The Lord’s Supper10:16-22; 11:17-3410:16-21; 11:23-29Exodus 12; Exodus 24:8; Matthew 26:26-29; Luke 22:19-20Critical. Sacramental body/blood/covenant vocabulary requires the most careful forensic precision in the letter.
8Spiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ12; 1412:1-31; 14:1-40Joel 2:28-29 (cf. Acts 2:17-18); Romans 12:3-8; Ephesians 4:11-16High. Discernment-of-spirits and tongues terminology must be distinguished from folk-Hindu/Sufi possession-trance phenomena.
9Love as the Greater Way1313:1-13Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18; John 13:34-35; Romans 13:8-10; 1 John 4:7-21Critical. প্রেম collides with Vaishnava bhakti and Tagore-poetic romantic-devotional usage; the single highest-stakes new term in the book.
10Order in Worship11:2-16; 14:26-4011:2-16; 14:26-40Genesis 1:26-27; 2:18-23; 1 Timothy 2:8-15Critical (head covering, 11:4-7 — collides with live Hindu/Muslim religious dress codes); High (silence passage, 14:34-35 — contemporary flashpoint).

Section 3 — The Redemptive-Historical Arc in 1 Corinthians

1 Corinthians touches every major movement of the biblical storyline, making it a compact case study in redemptive-historical theology:

  • Creation — Marriage as a creation ordinance (7:1-40, rooted in Genesis 2:18-24); humanity as the image and glory of God (11:7, rooted in Genesis 1:26-27).
  • Fall — Adam as the representative head through whom death entered (15:21-22,45-49, rooted in Genesis 2:7 and Genesis 3).
  • Israel and Covenant — The Exodus wilderness generation as a typological warning (10:1-11); the Passover lamb typology fulfilled in Christ (5:7); covenant-blood typology fulfilled in the Lord’s Supper (11:25, rooted in Exodus 24:8).
  • Christ — The cross as the definitive display of God’s wisdom and power (1:18-25); the resurrection as the historically-attested, multiply-witnessed center of the gospel (15:1-11); Christ as the pre-incarnate Rock who sustained Israel (10:4) and as the last Adam who gives life (15:45).
  • Church — The one body with many gifts and members, unified by love, gathered for orderly worship (chs. 12-14); a community set apart in holiness and discipline (chs. 5-6).
  • Consummation — The final defeat of death and the resurrection of the dead at Christ’s return (15:20-58); the “until he comes” horizon of the Lord’s Supper (11:26); the closing Maranatha cry, “our Lord, come” (16:22).

Section 4 — Cross-Canonical Theme Threads

Thread 1: Wisdom

Section 5 — Bengali Cultural-Theological Interface Map

ThemeHindu-Context InterfaceMuslim-Context InterfaceCurriculum Doctrine
ResurrectionMust be sharply distinguished from পুনর্জন্ম (rebirth/reincarnation within samsara)Must be distinguished from the Qur’anic denial that Jesus died on the cross at all (crucifixion denial)The Resurrection of Christ and Believers
One God / one Lord (8:6)Distinguish from Vedantic Ishvara-as-one-among-many-manifestations readingsDirectly engages tawhid; must not be softened to avoid confrontation, nor overstated beyond the textCross as Wisdom and Power / underlying Christology
Idol meat / idolatryDirectly names living পূজা practice (Durga Puja, temple প্রতিমা); pastorally sensitive but doctrinally unavoidableGenerally affirming of the anti-idolatry stance (shirk parallels), lower collision risk hereChristian Liberty and Idol Meat

Spiritual gifts / tongues / discernmentRisk of conflation with folk-Hindu deity-possession trance statesRisk of conflation with Sufi dhikr ecstatic states and jinn-possession folk beliefSpiritual Gifts and the Body of Christ
Marriage / widow remarriageHistoric Hindu social taboo against widow remarriage creates pastoral friction with 7:39-40Islamic marriage/remarriage norms generally more permissive here, lower frictionMarriage and Singleness
Temple metaphor (believers as God’s dwelling)Directly inverts the ordinary meaning of মন্দির (a shrine housing a deity’s image); requires mandatory translator noteLower direct collision (no image-housing shrine concept), but “God dwelling in a person” still requires careful framingChurch Discipline and Holiness (temple sub-theme)
Lord’s SupperNo direct parallel ritual, but sacrificial/communal-meal categories present in পূজা practice may color first impressionsSome resonance with communal Eid meals as fellowship markers, though no sacramental parallelThe Lord’s Supper

Section 6 — Relationship to the Romans Language Package

1 Corinthians extends, rather than replaces, the Romans doctrine risk registry. The following relationships govern how this curriculum’s doctrine set interacts with the existing certified package:

  • Directly reused doctrine categories (no new registry entry needed, term renderings carried forward unchanged): Gospel, Grace, Faith, Divine/Effectual Calling, Holiness/Sanctification, Sainthood, Resurrection of Christ, Lordship of Christ, Deity of Christ, Church as God’s People, Spiritual Gifts (base term), Kingdom of God, Power of God for Salvation, Justification, Covenant.
  • Extended doctrine categories (Romans establishes the term; 1 Corinthians applies it to new theological territory requiring a new doctrine-registry sub-entry): Resurrection of Christ and Believers (Romans treats Christ’s resurrection; 1 Corinthians 15 extends the doctrine to the believer’s own future bodily resurrection in unprecedented detail); Body of Christ (Romans 12 introduces the metaphor briefly; 1 Corinthians 12 develops it into a full ecclesiology); Covenant (Romans establishes নিয়ম for the Davidic/Mosaic covenant; 1 Corinthians 11:25 extends it to the Lord’s Supper’s “new covenant”).
  • Genuinely new doctrine categories (no Romans precedent; require new doctrine-registry entries per doctrine_risk_registry.json conventions): Christian Unity versus Factionalism; The Cross as Wisdom and Power; Church Discipline and Holiness; Marriage and Singleness; Christian Liberty and Idol Meat; The Lord’s Supper (as a distinct sacramental doctrine, beyond the covenant term alone); Love as the Greater Way; Order in Worship.
  • Retroactive-consistency candidates (terms 1 Corinthians introduces that should be back-ported into the Romans package for full cross-curriculum coherence): প্রেম (love, ἀγάπη — absent from Romans TM despite Romans discussing love extensively); বিবেক (conscience) and বিঘ্ন (stumbling block), both central to Romans 14’s disputable-matters teaching but not yet formally recorded in the Romans baseline.

This theme map, together with analysis/09_cross_reference_analysis.md, establishes the full Phase 1 Step 3 foundation for extending bible_term_registry.json and doctrine_risk_registry.json to cover 1 Corinthians in subsequent Phase 1 steps.

This document must be read alongside analysis/07_semantic_analysis.md, analysis/08_core_glossary.md, and analysis/09_cross_reference_analysis.md as the complete Phase 1 Step 1–3 foundation for the 1 Corinthians Bengali curriculum.
