Doctrine Analysis
11 — Doctrine Analysis: Gospel of John (English → Bengali)
This document is the full-book doctrine matrix for the John curriculum, covering all 21 chapters. It is generated from, and is fully consistent with, assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (John) — same 33 doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. This document adds the chapter-by-chapter walkthrough and translation-risk narrative required for Phase 1 Step 4/5 deliverables; it does not introduce any doctrine or tier not already present in the registry.
Per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate, every chapter is addressed explicitly below, including the five chapters (2, 9, 12, 19, 20) that extend previously introduced doctrines without adding a new doctrine category — these are marked [Reviewed — no new doctrine] rather than silently omitted.
Core passage John 3:1-21 is the theological anchor of the curriculum (Nicodemus dialogue: new birth, God’s love for the world, judgment/belief) but is never treated as the scope boundary; full-book coverage below runs chapters 1–21.
Part A — Full Doctrine Matrix
| # | Doctrine | Risk | Key Supporting Passages (John) | Translation Risk / Bengali-Specific Reason | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word) | Critical | 1:1-3,14,18; 5:18; 8:58; 10:30; 20:28 | Anarthrous θεός must render as full deity (বচন ঈশ্বর ছিলেন), never “a god” (একজন ঈশ্বর). Sharpest divergence point from Hindu avatara/emanation readings and Islamic denial of Christ’s deity and of “Word” (Kalimatullah) as a title of deity. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Incarnation | Critical | 1:14 | দেহধারণ only; never অবতার (repeatable, temporary Hindu deity-descent). Eternal, unique, once-for-all assumption of human nature. | Human theologian |
| 3 | Sonship of Christ | Critical | 1:14,18; 3:16-18; 5:18; 20:31 | একমাত্র পুত্র = unique-in-kind, not biological begetting. Muslim-background readers commonly (and rightly, on Islam’s own terms) reject a literal-biological reading; mandatory relational/eternal clarifying note every occurrence. Must stay distinct from ঈশ্বরের সন্তান (believers’ new-birth sonship). | Human theologian |
| 4 | Son of Man and the Genuine Humanity of Christ | High | 1:14,51; 3:13-14; 6:53-62; 11:33-35; 19:28,34 | Risk of collapsing into either mere-humanity (undercuts deity) or full identity with ঈশ্বরের পুত্র (loses the title’s specific human self-designation). 11:35’s real grief guards against docetic/folk-Gnostic “too divine to truly suffer” assumptions. | Human theologian |
| 5 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Critical | 10:30; 14:9-11; 17:11,21-23 | Grammatical ἕν (essence-unity of two eternally distinct persons), not εἷς (identity-collapse). Bengal-specific CRITICAL risk: Advaita Vedanta non-dualism (culturally dominant in West Bengal) will readily absorb “I and the Father are one” into impersonal self-Brahman identity-merger. Mandatory distinguishing note every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 6 | The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Critical | 1:12-13; 3:3-8,31 | নতুন জন্ম only; NEVER পুনর্জন্ম (already Romans-baseline-forbidden as Hindu/Buddhist reincarnation). “Born of water and spirit” (3:5) must not read as ritual-bathing/wudu self-accomplishment. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Eternal Life through Faith in Christ | Critical | 3:15-16,36; 5:24; 6:47,54; 10:28; 17:3; 20:31 | NEVER মোক্ষ (Hindu rebirth-escape) or নির্বাণ (Buddhist cessation). 17:3 defines it as relational knowledge of a personal God, not absorption/extinction. Curriculum’s thesis-level doctrine, parallel to Romans’ justification/salvation. | Human theologian |
| 8 | God’s Love for the World | High | 3:16; 13:34-35; 15:9-13; 21:15-17 | প্রেম is the central technical term of Bengali Gaudiya Vaishnava bhakti devotion (Radha-Krishna prema); risk of readers importing romantic-ecstatic devotional categories into unconditional, sacrificial, initiating divine love. Mandatory clarifying note at every agapē text. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Critical | 3:17-19,36; 5:22-30; 9:39; 12:31,47-48; 16:8,11 | ”Already condemned” (present-tense verdict) collides with both Hindu impersonal karma-accounting and Islamic future-only Day-of-Judgment framework. 16:8 compounds পাপ + ধার্মিকতা + বিচার in one clause — maximally load-bearing. | Human theologian |
| 10 | The Seven “I Am” Statements | Critical | 6:35,48,51; 8:12,58; 10:7,9,11,14; 11:25; 14:6; 15:1,5 | Echoes Exodus 3:14 LXX ἐγώ εἰμι (divine self-name). Lock আমিই at every occurrence; absolute form (8:58) never diluted. 14:6’s exclusivity clause confronts Hindu pluralism and Islamic exclusivism alike and must not be softened. | Human theologian |
| 11 | The Holy Spirit as Counselor | Critical | 14:16-17,26; 15:26; 16:7-15; 20:22 | No single Bengali word covers παράκλητος’s full range; সাহায্যকারী recommended, উকিল rejected (too narrowly forensic). Must remain strictly personal — never impersonal, reinforcing Romans-baseline caution against ব্রহ্ম/পরমাত্মা. 20:22-23 forgiveness must not read as independent shrine/pir-style intercession. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection | Critical | 1:29,36; 3:14; 6:51-56; 10:11,15,17-18; 12:24,32-33; 19:30,34; 20:1-29 | Substitutionary sacrifice is not intuitive within Bengali bhakti devotionalism or Islamic Eid practice; “Lamb of God” and “eat my flesh/drink my blood” both require mandatory figurative-appropriation notes and collide with Hindu ahimsa/vegetarian sensibility and Islamic blood-prohibition. “It is finished” must convey active completion, not passive defeat. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Resurrection of Christ | Critical | 2:19-22; 11:25; 20:1-29 | পুনরুত্থান only, never পুনর্জন্ম. Lazarus’s temporary resuscitation (ch.11) must stay distinguished from Christ’s own permanent, bodily, glorified resurrection (ch.20). | Human theologian |
| 14 | Lordship of Christ | Critical | 5:17-23; 18:33-19:22; 20:28; 21:7,12 | প্রভু must convey exclusive, supreme lordship. Thomas’s confession (20:28) is the Gospel’s climactic, uncorrected deity/lordship confession — lock rendering, full force, no qualification. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Messianic Promise and Fulfillment | Critical | 1:20,29,36,41,45,49; 4:25-26,29; 7:26-31,40-42; 11:27; 20:31 | খ্রীষ্ট only, never মশীহ. Must not collapse into Isa-as-one-prophet-among-many (Islamic) or one-avatar-among-many (Hindu) frameworks. | Human theologian |
| 16 | Davidic Lineage Background | Medium | 7:40-43 | Requires OT covenant background for the Bethlehem-vs-Galilee debate to be intelligible; Bengali Muslims venerate Dawud as prophet-king but without the covenantal-promise dimension this debate presupposes. | Native speaker review |
| 17 | Sin and Human Guilt | High | 1:29; 8:34-36; 9:2-3,41; 16:8-9; 20:23 | পাপ only. 9:2-3,41 explicitly rejects a simple suffering-equals-sin/karma equation — must be preserved against readers’ instinct toward karmic reading of misfortune. | Human theologian |
| 18 | Sanctification | High | 17:17,19 | পবিত্রীকরণ, distinct from Hindu ritual purification (shuddhi) and Islamic ritual cleanliness (taharah); Christ’s self-sanctification (17:19) ties directly to substitutionary death for the disciples. | Human theologian |
| 19 | Worship of Christ | Critical | 4:20-24; 9:38; 20:28 | আরাধনা/প্রণিপাত carry strong Hindu puja associations. Worship directed at Jesus (9:38; 20:28) is a direct deity claim, never diluted to social respect (নমস্কার/প্রণাম); “in spirit and truth” (4:23-24) must be distinguished from location-bound ritual worship. | Human theologian |
| 20 | Effectual Calling and the Father’s Drawing | High | 6:37,44,65; 10:27-29; 17:2,6-9 | ἑλκύω (“draw”) must render as personal, effectual, initiating grace — not impersonal fate (ভাগ্য/নিয়তি), continuing the Romans-baseline caution on election/providence vocabulary. | Human theologian |
| 21 | Assurance of Eternal Security | High | 10:28-29; 6:37,39; 17:12 | Assurance rests on Christ’s unbreakable grip and the Father’s will — not karmic rebirth-uncertainty nor the orthodox Islamic position that final judgment outcome is unknowable before death. Requires a grounded, unhedged note, not a softened rendering. | Human theologian |
| 22 | The Non-Political Nature of Christ’s Kingdom | Medium | 6:15; 18:36 | Reinforces Romans-baseline kingdom_of_god caution against territorial/political reading; essential given live political-religious sensitivities in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. | Native speaker review |
| 23 | Mission and Sending | Medium | 3:17; 17:18; 20:21 | Grounds church mission in the Father’s sending of the Son; sending-vocabulary (প্রেরণ করা/পাঠানো) consistency matters theologically; open evangelistic framing carries real social sensitivity in Bangladesh’s Muslim-majority context. | Native speaker review |
| 24 | Universal Scope of the Gospel | High | 3:16; 4:4-42; 10:16; 11:51-52; 12:20-21 | No caste, ethnic, or communal-identity barrier limits the gospel’s reach — pointed where Hindu caste residue and Hindu/Muslim communal identity both still shape social status in Bengal; must not be softened for social comfort. | Human theologian |
| 25 | The Wrath of God | High | 3:36 | ক্রোধ risks reading through fierce, emotionally volatile deity-iconography (Kali/Durga’s wrathful aspect); must be presented as God’s settled, judicial opposition to unbelief, not capricious rage. | Human theologian |
| 26 | Freedom from Slavery to Sin | High | 8:31-36 | Natural term মুক্তি is the exact word the Romans baseline forbids for “salvation” (Hindu/Buddhist mokṣa association). Requires narrowed, qualified phrase (পাপের দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্তি), never bare মুক্তি, with mandatory distinguishing note every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 27 | Prayer in Jesus’s Name | Medium | 14:13-14; 15:7,16; 16:23-26 | Direct access to the Father through Christ’s mediating name; distinguish from shrine-based folk-Islam/folk-Catholic pir/saint-tomb intercession practice common in Bengal. | Native speaker review |
| 28 | The Love Command and Christian Fellowship | Medium | 13:34-35; 15:9-13,17 | Carries forward the প্রেম/bhakti-devotionalism collision risk (see doctrine #8); here the corrective content is explicit (“as I have loved you,” modeled on cross/foot-washing) and should anchor teaching material. | Native speaker review |
| 29 | Inspiration and Fulfillment of Scripture | Medium | 5:39; 18:37; 19:24,28,36-37; 20:9 | Linear, historical fulfillment of specific OT texts in Christ, distinct from cyclical Hindu shruti (heard by sages) and from the Islamic doctrine of the Qur’an’s verbal dictation. | Native speaker review |
| 30 | Church Unity of Believers | Medium | 10:16; 15:4-10; 17:20-23 | Modeled on, but not ontologically identical to, Father-Son unity (10:30); guard against readers concluding disciples achieve literal ontological identity with God or each other — the same Advaita-adjacent risk as doctrine #5, at a lower register. | Native speaker review |
| 31 | Humble Service (Foot-Washing Example) | Low | 13:1-17 | Low doctrinal risk; a superior washing an inferior’s feet is intelligible and startling within Bengali honor/status culture too — a positive cross-cultural bridge, not a collision risk. | Automated review |
| 32 | Christ-Centered Shepherding Ministry | Medium | 21:15-17 | Peter’s recommissioning is delegated, not independent, shepherding under Christ’s ultimate ownership (cf. 10:11); guard against readings that treat pastoral office as self-sourced authority — a real risk given NGO-style institutional leadership patterns common to Bengali Christian institutional presence. | Native speaker review |
| 33 | Comfort in Tribulation | Low | 16:20-22,33 | Culturally universal, low-risk vocabulary (labor-pains-to-joy, victory language), provided “overcome the world” is not read as this-worldly/communal-triumphalist victory (see doctrine #22, #25 notes). | Automated review |
Risk tier totals (matching doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical 14 · High 11 · Medium 8 · Low 2 — total distinct doctrines: 33.
Part B — Chapter-by-Chapter Walkthrough (Full-Book Coverage, John 1–21)
John 1 — Prologue, Witness, First Disciples
New doctrines introduced: #1 Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (1:1-3,18), #2 Incarnation (1:14), #3 Sonship of Christ (1:14,18,34,49), #6 New Birth and Regeneration (1:12-13, “children of God”), #15 Messianic Promise and Fulfillment (1:20,29,36,41,45,49), #12 Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (Lamb of God, 1:29,36), #17 Sin and Human Guilt (1:29). Translation-risk note: this chapter sets the entire curriculum’s Critical-tier vocabulary (বচন, দেহধারণ, একমাত্র পুত্র, ঈশ্বরের মেষশিশু) — errors here propagate through all 21 chapters.
John 2 — Cana, Temple Cleansing
[Reviewed — no new doctrine.] Extends #1 Deity of Christ (glory revealed, 2:11) and #12 Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (temple/body foreshadowing, 2:19-22 → doctrine #13 Resurrection of Christ is anticipated here but not yet formally introduced as its own primary passage set). No wholly new doctrine category.
John 3 — CORE PASSAGE (3:1-21), plus 3:22-36
New doctrines introduced/centralized: #7 Eternal Life through Faith (3:15-16,36), #9 Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (3:17-19,36), #8 God’s Love for the World (3:16), #25 Wrath of God (3:36), #4 Son of Man and Humanity of Christ (3:13-14); #6 New Birth is centralized/formally taught here (having been introduced conceptually in 1:12-13). This is the theological anchor of the curriculum. Nicodemus’s dialogue (3:1-15) carries the single highest concentration of Critical-tier terms per verse in the book: নতুন জন্ম, ঊর্ধ্ব থেকে, পবিত্র আত্মা, অনন্ত জীবন, বিচার, ক্রোধ, প্রেম, একমাত্র পুত্র all occur within 21 verses. Every segment in 3:1-21 requires theologian review regardless of individual term risk, given the compounding density.
John 4 — Samaritan Woman, Living Water
New doctrines introduced: #24 Universal Scope of the Gospel (Samaritan woman, 4:4-42), #19 Worship of Christ (4:20-24). Extends #7 Eternal Life (living water, 4:10-14).
John 5 — Sabbath Healing, Son’s Authority
New doctrine introduced: #14 Lordship of Christ (5:17-23, Son’s authority). Extends #1 Deity of Christ (“equal with God,” 5:18) and #9 Judgment (5:22-30). Reuses ব্যবস্থা (Law) vocabulary from the Romans baseline; no wholly new lexical category beyond the above.
John 6 — Bread of Life, Feeding of 5000
New doctrines introduced: #10 Seven “I Am” Statements (bread of life, 6:35,48,51), #20 Effectual Calling and the Father’s Drawing (6:37,44,65). Extends #12 Substitutionary Death (eat flesh/drink blood, anticipatory, 6:51-56) and #19 Worship of Christ (Holy One of God confession, 6:69).
John 7 — Feast of Tabernacles, Origin Debate
New doctrine introduced: #16 Davidic Lineage Background (Bethlehem-vs-Galilee origin debate, 7:40-43). Otherwise [Reviewed — largely no new doctrine.] Reuses #15 Messianic Promise and Fulfillment and anticipates #11 Holy Spirit as Counselor (7:37-39 Spirit-timing note, formally introduced in ch.14).
John 8 — Light of the World, Freedom, Abraham
New doctrine introduced: #26 Freedom from Slavery to Sin (8:31-36). Extends #10 Seven “I Am” (light of world, 8:12; absolute “I am,” 8:58) and #1 Deity of Christ (8:58).
John 9 — Healing of the Man Born Blind
[Reviewed — no new doctrine.] Reuses #9 Judgment and Belief/Unbelief and light/darkness vocabulary from ch.3/8, and extends #19 Worship of Christ (9:38). No wholly new doctrine category introduced.
John 10 — Good Shepherd, Father-Son Unity
New doctrines introduced: #5 Unity of the Father and the Son (10:30), #21 Assurance of Eternal Security (10:28-29). Extends #10 Seven “I Am” (door, good shepherd) and #12 Substitutionary Death (good shepherd lays down his life, 10:11,15,17-18).
John 11 — Raising of Lazarus
New doctrine introduced: #13 Resurrection of Christ (Lazarus’s raising as foreshadowing/type; the doctrine’s full weight belongs to ch.20, but the distinguishing note — temporary resuscitation vs. permanent resurrection — must be established here). Extends #10 Seven “I Am” (resurrection and life, 11:25), #4 Humanity of Christ (11:35, “Jesus wept”), #15 Messianic Promise (Martha’s confession, 11:27).
John 12 — Triumphal Entry, Grain of Wheat, Greeks
[Reviewed — no new doctrine.] Extends #12 Substitutionary Death (grain of wheat, lifted up, 12:24,32-33), #15 Messianic Promise (triumphal entry, 12:13-15), #24 Universal Scope of the Gospel (Greeks seeking Jesus, 12:20-21). No wholly new doctrine category.
John 13 — Foot-Washing, New Commandment
New doctrines introduced: #28 The Love Command and Christian Fellowship (13:34-35), #31 Humble Service/Foot-Washing Example (13:1-17). Extends #4 Humanity of Christ (Christ as servant).
John 14 — Way/Truth/Life, Paraclete Promised
New doctrines introduced: #11 Holy Spirit as Counselor (Paraclete formally introduced, 14:16,26), #27 Prayer in Jesus’s Name (14:13-14). Extends #10 Seven “I Am” (way, truth, life, 14:6) and #5 Unity of the Father and the Son (14:9-11).
John 15 — True Vine, Spirit of Truth
New doctrine introduced: #30 Church Unity of Believers (abiding, 15:4-10). Extends #10 Seven “I Am” (true vine, 15:1,5), #11 Holy Spirit as Counselor (Spirit of truth, 15:26), #28 Love Command (15:9-13,17).
John 16 — Spirit’s Convicting Ministry, Sorrow to Joy
New doctrine introduced: #33 Comfort in Tribulation (16:20-22,33). Extends #11 Holy Spirit as Counselor (convicting ministry, 16:8-11) and #9 Judgment and Belief/Unbelief (16:8,11) — 16:8’s compound clause (πνεῦμα convicts κόσμος of ἁμαρτία, δικαιοσύνη, and κρίσις together) remains the single most doctrinally dense verse in chs. 14-17.
John 17 — High Priestly Prayer
New doctrines introduced: #18 Sanctification (17:17,19), #23 Mission and Sending (17:18). Extends #5 Unity of the Father and the Son (17:11,21-23), #7 Eternal Life (definitional statement, 17:3), #30 Church Unity of Believers (17:20-23).
John 18 — Arrest, Trial before Pilate
New doctrines introduced: #22 The Non-Political Nature of Christ’s Kingdom (18:36), #29 Inspiration and Fulfillment of Scripture (bearing witness to truth, 18:37 — formal introduction; extended further in ch.19). Extends #14 Lordship of Christ (King of the Jews trial).
John 19 — Crucifixion
[Reviewed — no new doctrine.] Extends #12 Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection (crucifixion, “it is finished,” blood and water, 19:16-37), #15 Messianic Promise (titulus, “King of the Jews”), #29 Inspiration and Fulfillment of Scripture (fulfilled-Scripture notes, 19:24,28,36-37). No wholly new doctrine category — this chapter’s density is in extension and climactic intensification, not new categories.
John 20 — Resurrection, Thomas’s Confession, Purpose Statement
[Reviewed — no new doctrine, but climactic convergence chapter.] Extends #13 Resurrection of Christ (full narrative), #14 Lordship of Christ and #1 Deity of Christ (Thomas’s confession, 20:28 — “my Lord and my God,” locked cross-document), #7 Eternal Life through Faith (purpose statement, 20:30-31 — locked cross-document, parallel to Romans 1:16-17/10:9-10 treatment), #11 Holy Spirit as Counselor (20:22), #17 Sin and Human Guilt (forgiveness commission, 20:23). This chapter carries maximal review weight despite introducing no new doctrine category, because it is where every Critical-tier Christological doctrine converges and is locked for cross-document consistency.
John 21 — Epilogue, Restoration of Peter
New doctrine introduced: #32 Christ-Centered Shepherding Ministry (21:15-17). Extends #8 God’s Love for the World (agapē/phileō restoration dialogue) and #23 Mission and Sending (implicit continuation).
Part C — Summary Observations for Phase 2 Planning
- Density concentration: John 1, 3, 6, 10, 14-17, and 20 carry the heaviest Critical-tier load and should receive priority theologian-review scheduling in Phase 2 Step 17.
- Five chapters contribute no new doctrine category (2, 9, 12, 19, 20) but must never be treated as lower-priority for review — chs. 19 and 20 in particular carry the book’s climactic doctrinal density even without new categories.
- Cross-document locked renderings (per
08_core_glossary.mdPart C) intersect directly with this matrix at doctrines #1, #3, #5, #6, #7, #10, #12, #13, #14, #19 — Phase 2 must treat these as non-negotiable, verbatim-consistent across every lesson document. - Bengal-specific collision doctrines requiring the most extensive translator notes: #5 (Unity of Father and Son vs. Advaita), #8 (God’s Love vs. bhakti-prema), #7 (Eternal Life vs. mokṣa/nirvana), #6 (New Birth vs. punarjanma), #26 (Freedom from Sin vs. mokṣa), #19 (Worship vs. puja), #25 (Wrath vs. Kali/Durga iconography).
This document must be loaded alongside assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (John) and analysis/08_core_glossary.md before Phase 2 Step 16/17 processing begins. See analysis/04_comparative_theology.md for the cross-tradition interpretive detail underlying the risk notes above.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Christ’s Substitutionary Death and Resurrection
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের প্রতিস্থাপক মৃত্যু ও পুনরুত্থান
Key terms: Lamb of God, lifted up, lay down his life, eat my flesh, drink my blood, it is finished, raised up
Review routing: Human theologian
Substitutionary animal sacrifice is not intuitive within mainstream Bengali Hindu bhakti devotionalism (darshan/puja) or Islamic Eid practice (commemorating provision, not sin-substitution); ‘Lamb of God’ and ‘eat my flesh/drink my blood’ both require mandatory background/figurative-appropriation notes, the latter also colliding with Hindu vegetarian/ahimsa sensibility and the Islamic blood-prohibition. ‘It is finished’ must convey active, purposive completion, not passive defeat.
The Deity and Pre-existence of Christ (the Word)
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের ঈশ্বরত্ব ও পূর্ব-অস্তিত্ব
Key terms: word, logos, in the beginning, was God, equal with God, I am, my Lord and my God
Review routing: Human theologian
The prologue’s anarthrous θεός (‘the Word was God’) must render as full deity (‘বচন ঈশ্বর ছিলেন’), never ‘একজন ঈশ্বর’ (a god), which would concede only lesser divinity. This is the sharpest point of departure from both Hindu (Christ as one avatar/emanation) and Muslim (Christ as created prophet, and ‘Word’ as Kalimatullah, a title denying deity) readings, and must never be softened.
Eternal Life through Faith in Christ
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টে বিশ্বাসের দ্বারা অনন্ত জীবন
Key terms: eternal life, believe, have life, this is eternal life, that they know you
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, new forbidden-substitution pair for this curriculum: NEVER মোক্ষ (Hindu liberation from rebirth) or নির্বাণ (Buddhist cessation) — both are escape-from-existence categories. John 17:3 defines eternal life as relational knowledge of God, a positive, ongoing personal relationship, not an impersonal absorption or cessation. This doctrine anchors John’s Gospel the way justification/salvation anchor Romans.
The Holy Spirit as Counselor
Bengali name: সহায়ক পবিত্র আত্মা
Key terms: Paraclete, Counselor, Spirit of truth, convict the world, receive the Holy Spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
No single Bengali word (সাহায্যকারী recommended) covers the full semantic range of παράκλητος (advocate, comforter, teacher, convictor); উকিল is rejected as too narrowly forensic/transactional. The Spirit must remain strictly personal — পবিত্র আত্মা, never an impersonal force — reinforcing the Romans baseline’s Critical caution against ব্রহ্ম/পরমাত্মা. 20:22-23’s forgiveness-commission must not be read as an independent, shrine/pir-style intercessory power apart from Christ’s finished work.
Incarnation
Bengali name: দেহধারণ
Key terms: word became flesh, flesh, dwelt among us
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: John 1:14 is the primary textual anchor for দেহধারণ across this curriculum. Never অবতার (a Hindu deity’s temporary, repeatable descent) — this is the eternal Word permanently and uniquely assuming human nature, once.
Judgment and Belief/Unbelief
Bengali name: বিচার এবং বিশ্বাস ও অবিশ্বাস
Key terms: condemned already, judged, the wrath of God remains, convict the world of sin
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: John’s claim that unbelief is ‘already’ (ἤδη) condemned in the present, prior to any future tribunal, is a genuinely distinct and counter-intuitive claim for readers shaped by either Hindu impersonal karma-accounting (an automatic cosmic ledger across lifetimes) or Islamic eschatology (judgment located exclusively at a future Day of Reckoning). 16:8 compounds this with পাপ and ধার্মিকতা in a single Spirit-convicting clause, making that verse maximally load-bearing.
Lordship of Christ
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের প্রভুত্ব
Key terms: Lord, King of the Jews, my Lord and my God, Son’s authority
Review routing: Human theologian
প্রভু must convey exclusive, supreme Lordship, not one honorific among several. Thomas’s confession (20:28) is the Gospel’s climactic, uncorrected deity/lordship confession spoken directly to Jesus and must be locked, rendered identically, with full force across all documents.
Messianic Promise and Fulfillment
Bengali name: মশীহি প্রতিশ্রুতির পূর্ণতা
Key terms: Messiah, Christ, King of Israel, the one Moses and the prophets wrote about
Review routing: Human theologian
খ্রীষ্ট only, never মশীহ. Must not collapse into the Islamic framework of Isa as one prophet among many, nor a Hindu framework of one avatar among many. John 1:41’s own gloss (‘Messiah, which means Christ’) models the needed explanatory approach without adopting Muslim-idiom vocabulary.
The New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit
Bengali name: নতুন জন্ম ও আত্মার দ্বারা পুনর্নবীকরণ
Key terms: born again, born from above, born of water and spirit, children of God
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL: the natural literal cognate পুনর্জন্ম is already forbidden in the Romans baseline as the standing term for Hindu/Buddhist reincarnation through the karmic cycle. Using it here would present the gospel’s new birth as one more turn of the rebirth wheel rather than a once-for-all, Spirit-given new creation. Required rendering: নতুন জন্ম, paired with ঊর্ধ্ব থেকে where the source-sense (from above) is primary. ‘Born of water and spirit’ (3:5) must not be read as ritual water-purification accomplishing new birth on its own, given Hindu ritual bathing and Islamic wudu/ghusl practices familiar to Bengali readers.
Resurrection of Christ
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের পুনরুত্থান
Key terms: raised, resurrection and the life, risen, I have seen the Lord
Review routing: Human theologian
পুনরুত্থান only, never পুনর্জন্ম. Lazarus’s raising (ch.11) is a real but temporary resuscitation, distinguished from Christ’s own permanent, bodily, glorified resurrection (ch.20); the distinction must be preserved so John’s resurrection claims are not flattened into reincarnation categories.
The Seven ‘I Am’ Statements
Bengali name: সাতটি ‘আমিই’ ঘোষণা
Key terms: I am the bread of life, I am the light of the world, I am the door, I am the good shepherd, I am the resurrection and the life, I am the way, the truth, and the life, I am the true vine, before Abraham was, I am
Review routing: Human theologian
Each ἐγώ εἰμι statement functions simultaneously as an accessible metaphor and a claim to bear the divine self-disclosed name of Exodus 3:14 LXX. Recommended consistent rendering আমিই at every occurrence; the absolute form (8:58 etc.) must never be diluted to a merely descriptive statement of existence. 14:6’s exclusivity clause additionally confronts both Hindu religious pluralism and Islamic exclusivism and must not be softened.
Sonship of Christ
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের পুত্রত্ব
Key terms: only Son, monogenēs, Son of God, his Son
Review routing: Human theologian
একমাত্র পুত্র (μονογενής) must convey ‘unique in kind,’ not biological begetting. Muslim-background readers frequently hear ‘Son of God’ as a literal biological claim, which Islam forcefully and rightly rejects on those terms; a translator note clarifying the relational, eternal (not biological) sense is mandatory at every occurrence. Must also be kept distinct from ঈশ্বরের সন্তান (believers as children of God by new birth, not by nature).
Unity of the Father and the Son
Bengali name: পিতা ও পুত্রের একতা
Key terms: I and the Father are one, one, in me and I in the Father
Review routing: Human theologian
CRITICAL, Bengal-specific: readers from a Hindu Vedantic/Advaita background (culturally influential in West Bengal) risk absorbing ἕν-unity language into অদ্বৈত non-dualism, where self and ultimate reality are impersonally, identically one and personal distinction is finally illusory. John’s grammar (ἕν, not εἷς) asserts unity of essence between two eternally distinct persons who address, love, and send one another — the opposite of non-dual identity-merger. Mandatory distinguishing translator note at every occurrence.
Worship of Christ
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের আরাধনা
Key terms: worship in spirit and truth, worshiped him, my Lord and my God
Review routing: Human theologian
আরাধনা/প্রণিপাত both carry strong Hindu puja associations. Worship directed at Jesus himself (9:38; 20:28) is a direct, load-bearing deity claim and must never be diluted into mere social respect (নমস্কার/প্রণাম); worship ‘in spirit and truth’ (4:23-24) must also be distinguished from location-bound ritual worship, resolving the Samaritan-vs-Jerusalem debate.
High Risk Doctrines
Assurance of Eternal Security
Bengali name: অনন্ত জীবনের নিশ্চয়তা
Key terms: no one will snatch them out of my hand, I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, kept in your name
Review routing: Human theologian
Assurance rests on Christ’s own unbreakable grip and the Father’s will, not karmic uncertainty about future rebirth nor the orthodox Islamic position that one’s final judgment outcome cannot be known with certainty before death — this contrast requires a grounded note, not a softened, hedged rendering.
Effectual Calling and the Father’s Drawing
Bengali name: কার্যকর আহ্বান ও পিতার আকর্ষণ
Key terms: no one can come unless the Father draws him, all that the Father gives me will come, I will not cast out
Review routing: Human theologian
The Father’s drawing (ἑλκύω) must be rendered as personal, effectual, initiating grace, not impersonal fate (ভাগ্য/নিয়তি) as the Romans baseline already cautions for election/providence language.
Freedom from Slavery to Sin
Bengali name: পাপের দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্তি
Key terms: slave to sin, the truth will set you free, if the Son sets you free
Review routing: Human theologian
The natural term মুক্তি is the exact word the Romans baseline forbids for ‘salvation’ due to Hindu/Buddhist mokṣa association; this doctrine cannot avoid freedom/slavery language altogether, so it requires a narrowed, qualified use (পাপের দাসত্ব থেকে মুক্তি, never bare মুক্তি) with a mandatory distinguishing note from mokṣa at every occurrence.
God’s Love for the World
Bengali name: জগতের প্রতি ঈশ্বরের প্রেম
Key terms: God so loved the world, love one another, greater love has no one
Review routing: Human theologian
প্রেম, the established Bengali Bible term, is also the central technical term of Bengali Gaudiya Vaishnava bhakti devotionalism (Chaitanya tradition, Radha-Krishna prema), a passionate, often erotically-coded devotional love historically centered in Bengal. Without correction, readers may unconsciously import bhakti-prema categories (romantic-devotional longing) into ‘God loved the world,’ subtly shifting an unconditional, sacrificial, others-directed divine love into an emotionally-charged devotee-experience category. Mandatory clarifying note at every agapē-love text.
Sanctification
Bengali name: পবিত্রীকরণ
Key terms: sanctify them, sanctify myself
Review routing: Human theologian
পবিত্রীকরণ, distinct from Hindu ritual purification (shuddhi) or Islamic ritual cleanliness (taharah); Christ’s self-sanctification (17:19) ties directly to his substitutionary death for the disciples’ sake.
Sin and Human Guilt
Bengali name: পাপ ও মানবিক দোষ
Key terms: sin, takes away the sin of the world, slave to sin, convict of sin, forgive sins
Review routing: Human theologian
পাপ only. John 9:2-3,41 explicitly rejects a simple suffering-equals-sin/karma equation, a point that must be preserved against readers’ instinct to read illness or misfortune as karmic consequence.
Son of Man and the Genuine Humanity of Christ
Bengali name: মনুষ্যপুত্র ও খ্রীষ্টের মানবতা
Key terms: Son of Man, flesh, Jesus wept, troubled in spirit
Review routing: Human theologian
মনুষ্যপুত্র risks two opposite misreadings: reducing Christ to merely human (undercutting deity), or being conflated with ঈশ্বরের পুত্র so the title’s specifically human self-designation loses force. Christ’s real human emotion (11:35) must be preserved as evidence against any docetic reading, a live concern given some popular Islamic-adjacent and folk-Gnostic assumptions that a truly divine figure could not suffer or weep as a real human.
Universal Scope of the Gospel
Bengali name: সুসমাচারের সার্বজনীন ব্যাপ্তি
Key terms: whoever believes, Samaritan woman, Greeks seeking Jesus, gather the scattered children of God
Review routing: Human theologian
No caste, ethnic, or religious-community barrier limits the gospel’s reach — a pointed claim where Hindu caste residue and Hindu/Muslim communal identity lines both still shape social status in Bengal; retain universal language without softening for social comfort.
The Wrath of God
Bengali name: ঈশ্বরের ক্রোধ
Key terms: the wrath of God remains on him
Review routing: Human theologian
ক্রোধ risks being read through Hindu iconography of fierce, emotionally volatile deity-forms (Kali/Durga’s wrathful aspect); must be presented as God’s settled, judicial opposition to unbelief, not capricious rage.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Christ-Centered Shepherding Ministry
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টকেন্দ্রিক মেষপালনের সেবাকাজ
Key terms: feed my lambs, shepherd my sheep, do you love me
Review routing: Native speaker review
Peter’s recommissioning is delegated, not independent, shepherding under Christ’s ultimate ownership (cf. 10:11, ‘his own sheep’); guard against a reading that treats pastoral office as a rival or self-sourced authority, a real risk given how much Bengali Christian institutional presence is expressed through NGO-style or institutional leadership models.
Church Unity of Believers
Bengali name: বিশ্বাসীদের একতা
Key terms: that they may be one, abide in me, one flock, one shepherd
Review routing: Native speaker review
Believers’ unity is modeled on, but not ontologically identical to, the Father-Son unity of 10:30; care is needed so this analogy is not read as claiming disciples achieve literal ontological identity with God or with one another (the same Advaita-adjacent risk flagged under unity_of_the_father_and_the_son, applied at a lower register here).
Davidic Lineage Background
Bengali name: দায়ূদের বংশগত পটভূমি
Key terms: seed of David, Bethlehem, David’s town
Review routing: Native speaker review
Requires OT background explanation for the Bethlehem-vs-Galilee debate to be intelligible; Bengali Muslims also venerate Dawud as a prophet-king but without the covenantal-promise dimension this debate presupposes.
Inspiration and Fulfillment of Scripture
Bengali name: শাস্ত্রের প্রেরণা ও পূর্ণতা
Key terms: the Scripture cannot be broken, this was to fulfill the Scripture, bear witness to the truth
Review routing: Native speaker review
Linear, historical fulfillment of specific Old Testament texts in Christ, distinct from the Hindu concept of cyclical shruti heard by sages and from the Islamic doctrine of the Qur’an’s verbal dictation.
The Love Command and Christian Fellowship
Bengali name: প্রেমের আদেশ ও খ্রীষ্টীয় সহভাগিতা
Key terms: love one another, new commandment, greater love has no one
Review routing: Native speaker review
Carries forward the প্রেম/bhakti-devotionalism collision risk from gods_love_for_the_world; here the corrective content is explicit (‘as I have loved you,’ modeled on the cross and foot-washing) and should anchor teaching material.
Mission and Sending
Bengali name: প্রেরণ ও মিশন
Key terms: as you sent me… so I have sent them, God sent his Son, not to condemn but to save
Review routing: Native speaker review
Grounds the disciples’/church’s mission in the same sending-pattern as the Father’s sending of the Son; consistency of sending-vocabulary (প্রেরণ করা/পাঠানো) across these texts is theologically important, and open evangelistic framing carries real social sensitivity in Bangladesh’s Muslim-majority context.
The Non-Political Nature of Christ’s Kingdom
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের অ-রাজনৈতিক রাজ্য
Key terms: my kingdom is not of this world, they wanted to make him king by force
Review routing: Native speaker review
Reinforces the Romans baseline’s kingdom_of_god caution against a territorial or political reading; essential to prevent conflating gospel proclamation with any political-power project, a live sensitivity in both Bangladesh’s and West Bengal’s political-religious contexts.
Prayer in Jesus’s Name
Bengali name: যীশুর নামে প্রার্থনা
Key terms: ask in my name, whatever you ask the Father in my name
Review routing: Native speaker review
Direct access to the Father through Christ’s mediating name; distinguish from the shrine-based folk practice (common to both folk Islam and folk Catholicism in Bengal) of seeking intercession through a pir or saint’s tomb.
Low Risk Doctrines
Comfort in Tribulation
Bengali name: দুঃখের মধ্যে সান্ত্বনা
Key terms: sorrow will turn into joy, I have overcome the world, take heart
Review routing: Automated review
Culturally universal, low-risk vocabulary (labor-pains-to-joy imagery, victory language), provided ‘overcome the world’ is not read as this-worldly or communal-triumphalist victory (a note already carried under the wrath/judgment and non_political_kingdom doctrines).
Humble Service (Foot-Washing Example)
Bengali name: নম্র সেবার দৃষ্টান্ত
Key terms: washed the disciples’ feet, example, as I have done for you
Review routing: Automated review
Low doctrinal risk; the shock of a superior washing an inferior’s feet is intelligible and startling within Bengali honor/status culture too, making this a positive cross-cultural teaching bridge rather than a collision risk.
