Cross-Reference Analysis
09 Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis — Colossians (Full Book) — English → Bengali
Methodology Note
Colossians differs structurally from Romans in how it uses the Old Testament: Romans is saturated with explicit, formula-introduced quotations (“as it is written,” Romans 4:3 citing Genesis 15:6, etc.); Colossians contains no formula-introduced direct OT quotations at all. Its OT engagement is entirely through allusion, echo, and typological argument — most densely concentrated in the core passage’s Wisdom/Word Christology (1:15–20) and in the household code (3:18–4:1). This is itself a translation-sensitivity point: Bengali readers accustomed (from Romans-based teaching) to seeing OT citations flagged explicitly may not notice Colossians’ allusions unless translator notes surface them. This document therefore functions as an allusion and typology matrix rather than a quotation-formula index, supplemented by a dedicated section cross-referencing shared language and quoted material with the Romans curriculum, since many Colossians readers in this language pair will have studied Romans first.
All citations below follow the normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” citation format (e.g., “Colossians 1:15”, “Genesis 1:26”), per house style; book names in Bengali-facing output follow the established conventions in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md (রোমীয়, আদিপুস্তক, গীতসংহিতা, যিশাইয়, etc.).
PART A — Cross-Reference Matrix: Chapter 1
| Passage (Colossians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colossians 1:9-10 | Spirit-given wisdom and knowledge, fruitful walk | Paul, the Colossians | Echoes Proverbs 1:7, 9:10 (wisdom rooted in fear/knowledge of the LORD); NT parallel Ephesians 1:17 | জ্ঞান/প্রজ্ঞা pairing (see 08 glossary Critical/High entries) must be anchored to God’s revealed will, not self-attained enlightenment; guard against Vedantic jñāna overlay. |
| Colossians 1:12 | Inheritance of the saints in light | believers | Echoes Deuteronomy 33:3-4 (Israel’s inheritance), Psalm 16:5-6 (the LORD as inheritance/portion); NT parallel Ephesians 1:11,18; Acts 26:18 (“inheritance among those sanctified”) | উত্তরাধিকার must read as full covenantal heirship (cf. baseline দত্তকপুত্রতা), not a partial share; light/darkness imagery (1:13) should not be flattened into a generic good/evil metaphor divorced from covenant inheritance. |
| Colossians 1:13 | Kingdom of the beloved Son | God the Father, “his beloved Son” (Christ) | Direct conceptual echo of Psalm 2:7 (“You are my Son… today I have begotten you”) and the “beloved son” language of Genesis 22:2 (Isaac) typologically fulfilled; NT parallel Matthew 3:17/17:5 (baptism/transfiguration voice) | “Beloved Son” must retain the full messianic-enthronement force of Psalm 2, not read as generic filial affection; connects to baseline son_of_god (Critical) — this is the Father’s own designation of the Son’s unique status, not an honorary title. |
| Colossians 1:14 | Redemption, forgiveness of sins | believers | Echoes Isaiah 43:25; Isaiah 44:22 (God blotting out sin); Psalm 130:8 (the LORD redeeming Israel from iniquities); NT parallel Ephesians 1:7 | উদ্ধার (redemption, extending baseline পরিত্রাণ logic) and ক্ষমা (forgiveness) must be kept as two distinct, complementary terms — neither collapsed into the baseline’s compound justification phrase ধার্মিক বলে গণ্য হওয়া, which conveys a different (forensic-declaration) sense. |
| Colossians 1:15 | Christ, the image of the invisible God | Christ; implicit contrast with Adam | Genesis 1:26-27 (man made in God’s image — Christ as the true, perfect Image where Adam’s image was marred); Proverbs 8:22-31 (Wisdom present with God at creation, personified, poetic background for Wisdom-Christology); NT parallel John 1:1-3,18; Hebrews 1:3; 2 Corinthians 4:4 | প্রতিমূর্তি (Critical, see 08 glossary) must be read against Genesis 1:26-27’s ঈশ্বরের প্রতিমূর্তি (man’s derivative image) — Christ is the underived, perfect archetype the Genesis image-bearing was always meant to point toward. Mandatory theologian review; must never be conflated with মূর্তিপূজা (idolatry, 3:5). |
| Colossians 1:15 | Firstborn of all creation | Christ | Psalm 89:27 (“I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth” — of David); Exodus 4:22 (Israel called God’s firstborn son, corporately); NT parallel Romans 8:29 (“firstborn among many brothers”); Hebrews 1:6; Revelation 1:5 | প্রথমজাত (Critical) must consistently carry the Psalm 89:27 rank/preeminence sense (supreme heir over creation) in every occurrence, never the chronological “first child born” sense. This is the single highest-priority rendering-consistency item in the book. |
| Colossians 1:16 | All things created through and for Christ | Christ (agent and goal of creation) | Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning God created…”); Psalm 33:6, 9 (“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made”); Psalm 148:5; Proverbs 8:30 (Wisdom as God’s craftsman/agent at creation); NT parallel John 1:3; 1 Corinthians 8:6; Hebrews 1:2 | সৃষ্টি করা reused from baseline; doctrinal emphasis (agent AND goal of creation, not merely an instrument) must survive translation — Bengali syntax should avoid implying Christ is a passive tool used by a separate, senior creator. |
| Colossians 1:16 | Thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities subordinate to Christ | unnamed spiritual powers | Echoes Daniel 7:9-14 (thrones, dominion given to “one like a son of man”); Psalm 103:19-21 (the LORD’s rule over heavenly hosts); NT parallel Ephesians 1:21; 1 Peter 3:22 | See baseline power_of_god logic: none of these four terms may use শক্তি. This fourfold list directly subordinates every category of spiritual being a Bengali reader might venerate or fear (deities, pirs, planetary powers) to Christ as Creator — theologian review required at every occurrence. |
| Colossians 1:17 | Christ before all things, sustaining all things | Christ | Nehemiah 9:6 (“You… give life to all of them”); Psalm 104 (creation sustained by God); NT parallel Hebrews 1:3 (“upholding the universe by the word of his power”) | একত্র থাকা / ধরে রাখা must convey Christ’s ongoing personal governance, paralleling baseline’s providence doctrine (ঈশ্বরের পরিচালনা) — not an impersonal natural-law reading. |
| Colossians 1:18 | Christ, head of the body, the church | Christ, the church | No direct OT type (ecclesial body-headship is a NT-era revelation); NT parallel Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:15-16; 5:23; 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 | মস্তক (head) must be rendered identically here and at 2:10,19 (cosmic and ecclesial headship) — a single consistent term across both senses, unlike নেতা which would flatten the organic life-giving sense. |
| Colossians 1:18 | Firstborn from the dead | Christ | Psalm 89:27 (rank sense, reused); typological anticipation in the “firstfruits” offering of Leviticus 23:10-11 (firstfruits guarantee and consecrate the whole harvest); NT parallel 1 Corinthians 15:20,23 (“Christ the firstfruits… then those who belong to Christ”); Revelation 1:5 | প্রথমজাত + পুনরুত্থান (Critical combination) must never shade toward পুনর্জন্ম. This is the direct doctrinal ground for “Union with Christ (died and raised with him)” developed in 2:12; 3:1 — rendering must be identical at all three points. |
| Colossians 1:19-20 | Fullness of God pleased to dwell in Christ; cosmic reconciliation through the cross’s blood | Christ, God the Father | Echoes the tabernacle/temple “dwelling” (שכן, shakan) theology of Exodus 25:8; Exodus 40:34-35 (glory filling the tabernacle); 1 Kings 8:10-11 (glory filling the temple); Isaiah 6:1-3 (the whole earth full of his glory); NT parallel John 1:14 (“the Word… dwelt among us,” same root ἐσκήνωσεν as tabernacle); John 2:19-21 (Christ’s body as the true temple); Ephesians 2:14-16 | পূর্ণতা and স্থায়ীভাবে বসবাস করা should be read as fulfilling temple/tabernacle indwelling typology — God’s glory-presence now permanently located in Christ’s body, not a temporary theophany. মিলন (reconciliation) must retain the cosmic (“all things,” 1:20) scope; cross-reference required with Romans 5:10-11’s narrower interpersonal usage (see Part D below). |
| Colossians 1:21-22 | Reconciliation of estranged/hostile people | believers, formerly “alienated” | Echoes Isaiah 59:2 (sin separating from God); Genesis 3 (the fall as the root of estrangement, typologically); NT parallel Romans 5:10; Ephesians 2:12-13 | Must connect this personal reconciliation to the cosmic reconciliation of 1:20 as the same act applied to individuals — do not use two unrelated Bengali roots for “reconciled” within the passage. |
| Colossians 1:23 | Gospel proclaimed to every creature under heaven | Paul and co-workers | Echoes the universal missionary horizon of Isaiah 49:6 (“a light for the nations”); Psalm 96:3 (“declare his glory among the nations”); NT parallel Matthew 28:19; Romans 1:5,14-16; 10:18 (quoting Psalm 19:4) | সুসমাচার reused exactly from baseline; connects directly to baseline’s mission_to_nations doctrine risk entry — same native-speaker sensitivity regarding open proclamation language in Bangladesh applies here. |
| Colossians 1:24 | Paul’s sufferings “filling up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions” | Paul; Christ | Echoes the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 (background for the concept of vicarious/representative suffering, though Paul’s own suffering is explicitly NOT atoning); NT parallel 2 Corinthians 1:5-7; Philippians 3:10 | খ্রীষ্টের দুঃখভোগ (Critical/High, see 08 glossary): mandatory footnote distinguishing Paul’s ministry-affliction from Christ’s all-sufficient atoning suffering, so the “Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ” doctrine is never undermined. |
| Colossians 1:26-27 | Mystery hidden for ages, now revealed: “Christ in you” | God, “the saints,” Christ | Echoes Daniel 2:28-29,47 (God who reveals mysteries/hidden things); Jeremiah 31:33 (new covenant written on the heart); Ezekiel 36:26-27 (God’s Spirit placed within his people) | নিগূঢ়তত্ত্ব/গোপন সত্য must be framed as an openly disclosed truth, fulfilling — not competing with — the new-covenant indwelling promises of Jeremiah/Ezekiel; must not be read through a Tantric গুপ্তবিদ্যা lens (see 08 glossary Critical entry). |
| Colossians 1:28-29 | Proclaiming Christ, striving with God’s power (ἐνέργεια) | Paul | Echoes Isaiah 40:29-31 (the LORD renewing strength); NT parallel Ephesians 3:20 | সামর্থ্য reused per baseline power_of_god logic — never শক্তি. |
PART B — Cross-Reference Matrix: Chapter 2
| Passage (Colossians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colossians 2:2-3 | Treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden in Christ | Christ | Echoes Isaiah 45:3 (“treasures of darkness,” hidden riches given by God); Proverbs 2:1-6 (wisdom/knowledge as the LORD’s gift, hidden treasure); Job 28 (wisdom hidden, found only with God) | জ্ঞান/প্রজ্ঞা pairing must be explicitly located “in Christ” (ἐν ᾧ) in translation, closing off any reading of self-discovered esoteric wisdom. |
| Colossians 2:6-7 | Walking in Christ, rooted and built up | believers | Echoes Psalm 1:3 (the righteous “planted”/rooted, fruitful); Jeremiah 17:7-8 (trust in the LORD as roots by a stream) | চলা/জীবনযাপন করা (walk) reused from Low-risk entry; রুটেড/প্রতিষ্ঠিত (rooted/established) imagery should retain the organic-growth sense of the OT tree metaphors, not a static architectural image alone. |
| Colossians 2:8 | Warning against philosophy and human tradition, elemental spirits | false teachers (unnamed) | Echoes Deuteronomy 12:29-32 (warning against adopting the religious customs of surrounding nations); Isaiah 8:19-20 (warning against consulting mediums/spirits instead of God’s instruction and testimony); NT parallel 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 4:3-4 | দর্শনশাস্ত্র and জগতের মূলতত্ত্ব (both Critical/High, see 08 glossary) must carry a mandatory translator note per baseline escalation rules — direct structural parallel to the Deuteronomic and Isaianic warnings against syncretism with surrounding religious systems, now applied to Colossae’s context and, by extension, to Bengali syncretistic pressures. |
| Colossians 2:9-10 | Fullness of deity in Christ bodily; believers filled in him; head over rulers/authorities | Christ, believers | Echoes 1 Kings 8:27 (“heaven… cannot contain you”) answered by the paradox of the infinite God’s fullness bodily present in Christ; NT parallel John 1:14,16; Ephesians 1:22-23; 3:19 | ঈশ্বরত্ব and দৈহিকভাবে (both Critical) are the single sharpest Christological claim in the book; must be theologian-reviewed at every occurrence and cross-referenced explicitly with 1:19’s পূর্ণতা and baseline’s দেহধারণ (incarnation) entry. |
| Colossians 2:11-12 | Spiritual circumcision “of Christ”; buried and raised with him in baptism, through faith | Christ, believers | Genesis 17:9-14 (circumcision as Abrahamic covenant sign); Deuteronomy 30:6 (“the LORD your God will circumcise your heart”); Jeremiah 4:4; NT parallel Romans 2:28-29 (circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit); Romans 6:3-11 (buried/raised with Christ in baptism — extended direct parallel, see Part D) | ত্বকছেদ (circumcision) requires the mandatory note distinguishing this spiritual sense from both the Genesis 17 physical rite and from Islamic khatna practice. The বাপ্তিস্ম/পুনরুত্থান pairing here must render identically to Romans 6:3-4’s established Bengali phrasing — this is a direct shared-passage rendering-consistency requirement (see Part D). |
| Colossians 2:13-14 | Made alive, sins forgiven, debt-record cancelled and nailed to the cross | God, believers | Echoes Isaiah 43:25 (“I… blot out your transgressions”); Psalm 51:1,9 (blotting out iniquity); NT parallel Ephesians 2:1,5 (made alive together with Christ) | ক্ষমা and ঋণের দলিল (High, debt-bond image) must retain the specific legal/forensic force — a formally cancelled written charge, not a vague amnesty. |
| Colossians 2:14-15 | The cross disarms and publicly triumphs over rulers and authorities | Christ; “rulers and authorities” (reuse from 1:16) | Echoes Exodus 15:1-11 (the Song of the Sea celebrating the LORD’s triumph over Pharaoh’s army — a paradigmatic OT “triumph over hostile powers” scene); Psalm 68:18 (leading captives, echoed at Ephesians 4:8); NT parallel Ephesians 1:20-21; 1 Peter 3:22 | নিরস্ত্র করা / বিজয় প্রদর্শন করা should be read against the Exodus 15 triumph-song background — a decisive, public, once-for-all victory, directly relevant to any reader who has feared these spiritual “rulers and authorities” as intermediary powers. |
| Colossians 2:16-17 | Ceremonial calendar (sabbaths, festivals, new moons) as shadow of the reality in Christ | — | Leviticus 23 (the full festival calendar); Numbers 28-29 (festival offerings); Exodus 20:8-11 (sabbath commandment); NT parallel Hebrews 8:5 (“a copy and shadow of the heavenly things”); Hebrews 10:1 (“the law… a shadow of the good things to come”); Galatians 4:9-10 | ছায়া (shadow) and the calendar terms (বিশ্রামবার/পর্ব/অমাবস্যা) must be explicitly anchored to this OT ceremonial-calendar background (Leviticus 23) so Bengali readers do not read “shadow” through a māyā (illusion) philosophical lens. অমাবস্যা specifically requires the mandatory note given its independent ritual weight in Bengali Hindu practice. |
| Colossians 2:18 | Worship of angels, self-abasement, visions | false teachers | Echoes the prohibition on worshiping “the host of heaven” in Deuteronomy 4:19; 17:3; 2 Kings 17:16; the angel who refuses worship in Revelation 19:10/22:8-9 (NT parallel, post-dating but thematically confirming); | স্বর্গদূতদের উপাসনা (High) directly parallels these OT prohibitions against venerating created heavenly beings; native-speaker cultural framing required for application to pir/deity veneration in Bengali folk religion. |
| Colossians 2:19 | Head, from whom the whole body grows | Christ, the church | No direct OT type; NT parallel Ephesians 4:15-16 (near-verbatim parallel passage) | মস্তক must be rendered identically to 1:18; growth/nourishment language should retain the organic (not merely administrative) sense. |
| Colossians 2:20-23 | Dying with Christ to the elemental spirits; human commands/teachings; self-made religion, asceticism | believers; false teachers | Echoes Isaiah 29:13 (“their heart is far from me… their fear of me is a commandment of men, taught by men” — quoted by Christ in Matthew 15:8-9/Mark 7:6-7, itself a NT reuse of this OT text); | স্ব-রচিত উপাসনা (High) should be cross-referenced with the Isaiah 29:13 / Mark 7:6-9 tradition of condemning human-invented religious rules that supplant God’s actual commands — a strong, textually anchored parallel worth surfacing in translator notes rather than treating this purely as a general “asceticism” caution. |
PART C — Cross-Reference Matrix: Chapters 3–4
| Passage (Colossians) | Theme | Related Character(s) | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colossians 3:1-2 | Raised with Christ; seek things above; Christ seated at God’s right hand | Christ, believers | Psalm 110:1 (“The LORD says to my Lord: Sit at my right hand…”) — one of the most-quoted OT verses in the NT; NT parallel Mark 12:36; Acts 2:34-35; Romans 8:34; Ephesians 1:20; Hebrews 1:13; 10:12-13 | Direct shared-language requirement with Romans 8:34’s allusion to the same Psalm — “seated/sitting at the right hand” phrasing must be rendered identically across both curricula (see Part D). This is a Critical-adjacent messianic-enthronement text; theologian review recommended given its density of NT reuse. |
| Colossians 3:3-4 | Life hidden with Christ in God; Christ our life, appearing in glory | Christ, believers | Echoes Psalm 27:5 (hiding “in the shelter of his tent”); NT parallel 1 John 3:2 (“when he appears we shall be like him”); 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 | মহিমা reused per baseline; “hidden with Christ” should not be rendered with vocabulary suggesting a secret/esoteric status (cross-reference with মিস্ট্রি/mystery cautions in 1:26-27, 2:2). |
| Colossians 3:5-9 | Putting to death earthly practices; covetousness as idolatry; old self stripped off | believers | Echoes the Decalogue’s prohibition on coveting (Exodus 20:17) explicitly named as আকাঙ্ক্ষা/লোভ; and the idolatry prohibitions of Exodus 20:3-5; NT parallel Ephesians 4:22-24 (near-verbatim “old self/new self” parallel passage); Romans 6:6 (“our old self was crucified with him”) | মূর্তিপূজা (idolatry) is the natural, transparent term but must be actively distinguished from প্রতিমূর্তি (1:15/3:10) per the 08 glossary Medium-risk entry. পুরাতন মানুষ (old self) is the exact same Greek phrase (ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος) used in Romans 6:6 — mandatory identical rendering across both curricula (see Part D). |
| Colossians 3:9-10 | New self renewed in the image of its Creator | believers; implicit Adam contrast | Genesis 1:26-27 (man made in God’s image) — deliberate intertextual echo back to Colossians 1:15’s Christ-as-image language; NT parallel Ephesians 4:24; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 12:2 (renewal of the mind) | নতুন মানুষ paired with the SAME root প্রতিমূর্তি used for Christ in 1:15 — this echo should be flagged explicitly in a translator note: the believer is renewed into the very image Christ himself perfectly embodies. |
| Colossians 3:11 | No Greek/Jew, circumcised/uncircumcised, barbarian/Scythian, slave/free — Christ is all and in all | all social/ethnic categories | Echoes Isaiah 56:3-8 (foreigners and eunuchs welcomed into the LORD’s house); NT parallel Galatians 3:28 (near-verbatim); Romans 10:12 (“no distinction between Jew and Greek”); Romans 3:22 | Must reuse baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles / universal_scope_of_gospel framework and language exactly as established for Romans 3:22/10:12 — same universalizing force, no softening for caste/communal-identity comfort (see Part D). |
| Colossians 3:12-13 | Chosen, holy, beloved; bearing with one another; forgiving as the Lord forgave | God, believers | Deuteronomy 7:6-8 (Israel chosen/beloved, not on the basis of merit); Isaiah 43:20-21 (the chosen people formed for God); NT parallel Ephesians 4:32 (near-verbatim “forgiving one another… as God in Christ forgave you”) | মনোনীত/আহুত-adjacent language should echo baseline election (ঈশ্বরের মনোনয়ন) and calling (আহুত) entries — chosen by grace, not karma-merit or communal-identity birthright. ক্ষমা reused; must mirror the “as the Lord forgave you” causal logic without weakening it to mere advice. |
| Colossians 3:14 | Love as the bond of perfection/completeness | believers | Echoes Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor as yourself” — foundational OT love-command); NT parallel Romans 13:8-10 (“love is the fulfilling of the law”); 1 Corinthians 13:13 | প্রেম must be anchored as this covenantal, unifying love, distinct from bhakti-romantic connotation (see 08 glossary High entry). |
| Colossians 3:15-17 | Peace of Christ ruling; word of Christ dwelling richly; psalms, hymns, spiritual songs; thanksgiving | believers | Echoes Psalm 34:14 (seek peace); the Psalter itself as the model for corporate praise (e.g. Psalm 150) | শান্তি, ধন্যবাদ, গীত/স্তোত্র/আত্মিক সঙ্গীত reused; no new syncretism risk, but should be read as fulfilling, not replacing, the OT Psalter tradition of corporate praise. |
| Colossians 3:18-19 | Wives submit; husbands love | husbands, wives | Genesis 2:18-24 (creation of marriage); Genesis 3:16 (post-fall relational strain, background not endorsement); NT parallel Ephesians 5:22-33 (extended near-parallel passage) | বশীভূত হওয়া (High, see 08 glossary) requires the qualifying phrase “as is fitting in the Lord” (ὡς ἀνῆκεν ἐν κυρίῳ) to be rendered with full force alongside husbands’ love-command — theologian and native-speaker review both required. |
| Colossians 3:20-21 | Children obey parents; fathers not provoking children | children, fathers | Exodus 20:12 (“Honor your father and your mother”); Deuteronomy 5:16; NT parallel Ephesians 6:1-4 (near-verbatim) | পিতা here is used in its ordinary family sense (see 08 glossary note), not the doctrinal title for God the Father used elsewhere in the same chapter (3:17) — translator note required to keep the two uses distinct in Bengali as in Greek/English. |
| Colossians 3:22-4:1 | Bondservants obey earthly masters; masters treat servants justly; both serve the true heavenly Master | slaves (“bondservants”), masters | Leviticus 25:39-43 (fair treatment of indentured servants, no harsh rule); Job 31:13-15 (Job’s appeal to the shared Creator of master and servant); NT parallel Ephesians 6:5-9 (near-verbatim); Philemon 1:16 (Paul’s direct application to Onesimus) | Direct baseline-collision term: κύριος used of both human owners and Christ in the same passage. Human masters = মালিক; every reference to Christ (including “you also have a Master in heaven,” 4:1) = প্রভু, per the 08 glossary High-risk entry. This is the single most consequential consistency rule in the household-code section. |
| Colossians 4:2-4 | Prayer; open door for the word; mystery of Christ | Paul, believers | Echoes Daniel 6:10 (Daniel’s persistent prayer); Isaiah 55:6 (“seek the LORD while he may be found”) | প্রার্থনা reused per baseline prayer_and_intercession framework; নিগূঢ়তত্ত্ব reused from 1:26-27/2:2 — must render identically at every occurrence for lexical consistency across the book. |
| Colossians 4:5-6 | Wisdom toward outsiders; gracious, salt-seasoned speech | believers | Echoes Ecclesiastes 3:1,7 (a time to speak); Proverbs 15:1,23 (a gracious/timely word) | প্রজ্ঞা and লবণ reused; low risk, but connects to baseline’s evangelism doctrine entry (native-speaker sensitivity around proclamation tone in Bangladesh). |
| Colossians 4:7-18 | Personal greetings; co-workers; house-church network (Nympha; Laodicea) | Tychicus, Onesimus, Aristarchus, Mark, Barnabas, Justus, Epaphras, Luke, Demas, Nympha, Archippus | No direct OT/typological connection; NT parallel Philemon 1:1-2,10-12,23-24 (Onesimus, Epaphras, Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke all also named there — same historical circle) | Purely proper-name transliteration risk (see 07/08 established forms); no doctrinal risk. Recommend cross-referencing Philemon’s shared cast of names in translation memory if that curriculum is ever produced for Bengali. |
PART D — Parallels to the Romans Curriculum: Rendering-Consistency Rules
Because many Bengali-speaking learners will encounter Romans before or alongside Colossians, the following passages and phrases are shared or near-identical between the two curricula and must be rendered with strict consistency. Any deviation must be flagged for theologian review before Phase 2 approval.
| Shared Element | Colossians Reference | Romans Reference | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| ”Old self” (ὁ παλαιὸς ἄνθρωπος) | Colossians 3:9 | Romans 6:6 | Identical Greek phrase. Bengali rendering পুরাতন মানুষ must be used in both curricula without variation. This term must be added to a shared cross-curriculum entry in translation_memory.json if not already present from Romans processing, so that both curricula draw from one authoritative record. |
| ”No distinction” / universal scope (Jew/Greek, circumcised/uncircumcised) | Colossians 3:11 | Romans 3:22; Romans 10:12 | Both invoke baseline’s unity_of_jews_and_gentiles and universal_scope_of_gospel doctrines. The same non-softened, fully inclusive Bengali phrasing established for Romans 3:22/10:12 must be reused structurally in Colossians 3:11, even though the vocabulary list differs (Greek/Jew/barbarian/Scythian/slave/free vs. Jew/Greek). |
| Seated/sitting at God’s right hand (Psalm 110:1 allusion) | Colossians 3:1 | Romans 8:34 | Both are allusions (not quotations) to the same OT text. The phrase “ঈশ্বরের দক্ষিণে বসে আছেন” (or the equivalent established in the Romans package) must be used identically in both curricula. If Romans processing established a specific phrasing for 8:34, that exact phrasing is authoritative here. |
| Union with Christ: buried/raised with him in baptism, through faith | Colossians 2:12 | Romans 6:3-11 | Direct doctrinal and near-verbatim structural parallel (“buried with him… raised with him… through faith”). The বাপ্তিস্ম + পুনরুত্থান (never পুনর্জন্ম) combination established for Romans 6 must be reused without modification in Colossians 2:12, and the theologian-review flag applied to Romans 6 resurrection language applies equally here. |
| Creation “from him and through him and to him” / “by him… through him… for him” | Colossians 1:16 | Romans 11:36 | Conceptually parallel doxological formula (agent/means/goal of all things). Where Romans 11:36 has already established Bengali phrasing for this triadic structure, the same structural pattern (not necessarily identical vocabulary, since the referents differ — God the Father in Romans 11:36, Christ in Colossians 1:16) should be used, with a translator note clarifying the shared doxological form applies to both Father and Son without confusing the two persons. |
| Power of God (ἐνέργεια/δύναμις) | Colossians 1:11,29; 2:12 | Romans 1:16 | Reuse baseline power_of_god entry exactly: সামর্থ্য, never শক্তি, in every occurrence in both curricula. |
| Reconciliation | Colossians 1:20-22 | Romans 5:10-11 | Same Greek root (καταλλάσσω/ἀποκαταλλάσσω) and same established Bengali rendering মিলন/মিলিত করা. Note the scope difference: Romans 5:10-11 is personal/individual reconciliation; Colossians 1:20 is cosmic (“all things,” τὰ πάντα). Both uses must draw on the same root term, with a translator note in Colossians clarifying the expanded cosmic scope so it is not read as merely restating Romans’ narrower point. |
| Imputed/credited righteousness background (Genesis 15:6) | Not directly quoted in Colossians | Romans 4:3, quoting Genesis 15:6 | No direct occurrence in Colossians, but Colossians 2:12’s “through faith” and 1:14’s “redemption/forgiveness” both presuppose the Romans 3-4 doctrine of righteousness received by faith apart from works, established via baseline’s imputed_righteousness (আরোপিত ধার্মিকতা) and justification (ধার্মিক বলে গণ্য হওয়া) entries. Translator notes in Colossians 1:14 and 2:12 may cross-reference Romans 4 for learners studying both curricula, without importing new vocabulary. |
| Chosen/elect/beloved (election language) | Colossians 3:12 | Romans 8:33; 9:11-13; 11:5-7 | Both draw on baseline’s election (ঈশ্বরের মনোনয়ন) and calling (আহুত) doctrine framework. Colossians 3:12’s “chosen, holy, and beloved” (ἐκλεκτοὶ… ἅγιοι καὶ ἠγαπημένοι) should render ἐκλεκτοί with the same root used for Romans’ election vocabulary, not a fresh, unrelated term. |
| Firstborn among many brothers / firstborn of all creation | Colossians 1:15,18 | Romans 8:29 | Romans 8:29 uses πρωτότοκος of Christ’s relation to redeemed humanity (“firstborn among many brothers”); Colossians 1:15,18 uses it of his relation to creation and to the resurrection. Same Bengali term প্রথমজাত must be used in both curricula, with per-passage translator notes distinguishing the specific relational scope (over creation vs. over the redeemed family) in each case. |
PART E — Messianic References and Typology Summary
| Type/Reference | OT Root | Fulfillment in Colossians | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| The true Image of God | Genesis 1:26-27 (Adam) | Colossians 1:15; 3:10 | Christ is the perfect, underived Image that Adam’s derivative image-bearing anticipated; the “new self” is renewed into this same Image. Adam-Christ contrast parallels Romans 5:12-21, though Colossians does not use Adam’s name explicitly. |
| Wisdom personified, present at creation | Proverbs 8:22-31 | Colossians 1:15-17 | Background poetic resource for Wisdom-Christology; Christ fulfills and exceeds the personified-Wisdom figure — he is not merely Wisdom’s agent but Wisdom’s divine source and possessor (2:3). |
| The Davidic “firstborn,” supreme king | Psalm 89:27 | Colossians 1:15,18 | Confirms πρωτότοκος as royal-rank language, not birth-order — directly relevant to the mandatory translator note on প্রথমজাত. |
| God’s glory dwelling in the tabernacle/temple | Exodus 40:34-35; 1 Kings 8:10-11 | Colossians 1:19; 2:9 | Christ’s body is the definitive, permanent locus of God’s dwelling-glory, fulfilling and superseding the tabernacle/temple typology (cf. John 1:14; 2:19-21). |
| The Suffering Servant | Isaiah 53 | Colossians 1:20,24 | Background for the reconciling, sacrificial death (1:20) and for the pattern of representative (though non-atoning) suffering Paul shares in (1:24) — the distinction between the two must be maintained in translation. |
| Circumcision of the heart | Deuteronomy 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4 | Colossians 2:11 | Spiritual circumcision “of Christ” fulfills, rather than abolishes, the covenant-sign typology; must be distinguished from Islamic khatna in translator notes. |
| Enthronement at God’s right hand | Psalm 110:1 | Colossians 3:1 | One of the most heavily reused OT texts in the NT; requires cross-curriculum consistency with Romans 8:34 (see Part D). |
| Firstfruits guaranteeing the harvest | Leviticus 23:10-11 | Colossians 1:18 (“firstborn from the dead”) | Reinforces the once-for-all, guarantee-securing force of Christ’s resurrection for all who belong to him (cf. 1 Corinthians 15:20,23). |
Full-Book Coverage Confirmation
All four chapters of Colossians have been reviewed for OT quotation, allusion, typology, messianic reference, and Romans-curriculum parallel. No formula-introduced direct OT quotations occur anywhere in the book; all OT engagement is allusive or typological, concentrated most heavily in 1:15-20 (creation/wisdom/temple typology), 2:8-23 (syncretism warnings echoing Deuteronomic/Isaianic polemic against foreign religious practice), and 3:1,9-14,18-4:1 (enthronement, image-renewal, and household-code typology). Chapter 4’s closing greetings (4:7-18) contain no OT/typological material and are noted here explicitly as reviewed, containing only proper-name transliteration considerations already addressed in 07_semantic_analysis.md and 08_core_glossary.md.
