07 Semantic Analysis — Revelation, Full Book (Koine Greek → Bengali)
Methodology and Baseline Compliance
This analysis follows the destination-language (Bengali) conventions already established and locked in the Romans Language Package (translation_memory.json, bible_term_registry.json, doctrine_risk_registry.json). Where a term recurs from Romans (e.g. ঈশ্বর, যীশু, খ্রীষ্ট, প্রভু, পবিত্র আত্মা, পিতা, পবিত্র, পবিত্র লোক, বিশ্বাস, অনুগ্রহ, পরিত্রাণ, ধার্মিকতা, পুনরুত্থান, মহিমা, মণ্ডলী, ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য, সুসমাচার, নিয়ম, আমেন, হাল্লিলূয়া, দায়ূদ, ইস্রায়েল), the baseline rendering is reused exactly and is marked [BASELINE REUSE] below rather than re-derived. All new terms unique to Revelation’s apocalyptic register are analyzed fresh and assigned a risk tier using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework, with grounded reasons tied to Bengal’s dominant Hindu (Shakta/Vaishnava/folk) and Muslim religious vocabularies, per the same collision-detection method the baseline used for Romans.
Revelation is saturated with Koine Greek apocalyptic idiom, OT allusion (especially Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Zechariah), and symbolic numerology. The Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine therefore governs how every image-term below should be rendered: literal-sounding Bengali words for symbolic realities (dragon, beast, bowls, trumpets) must be handled so that Bengali readers do not either (a) over-literalize them as a documentary newsreel of the future, or (b) assimilate them into existing Bengali mythological registers (Puranic serpents, wrathful goddesses, temple idol-worship, folk numerology) that carry unrelated theological freight.
PART 1 — Core Passage: Revelation 21:1-8 (Verse-by-Verse)
Revelation 21:1
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| new | καινός / kainos | new in kind/quality (not merely recent) | qualitatively new, renewed, unprecedented — contrasted with νέος (new in time only) | “new,” “renewed” | The new heaven/earth is not a patched-up version of the old but a fresh, qualitatively transformed creation — foundational to the New Heaven and New Earth doctrine | নতুন (notun). Risk: High. Bengali নতুন does not itself distinguish kainos/neos; a translator note is required at first occurrence to establish that this “new” is re-creation, not renovation, so readers do not read it as simply “another sky and another ground” in a cyclical cosmology sense (see below). |
| heaven | οὐρανός / ouranos | sky, the heavens, the abode of God | physical sky / God’s dwelling place | ”heaven,” “sky,” “the heavens” | Cosmic totality being remade, paired with γῆ | স্বর্গ (shorgo). Risk: Medium. স্বর্গ is the settled Bengali Christian term but is also the Hindu heaven of the devas (Swarga-loka), a temporary reward-realm exhausted by karma. Must be distinguished by context from a karma-merited, temporary heavenly abode — Revelation’s new heaven is a permanent, gift-given final state, not a temporary reward station in a rebirth cosmology. |
| earth | γῆ / gē | ground, land, the physical world | the created physical world | ”earth,” “world,” “land” | The physical creation itself, redeemed not discarded | পৃথিবী (prithibi). Risk: Low. |
| first (former) | πρῶτος / prōtos | first, former, earlier | first in a sequence; “former” as opposed to what follows | ”first,” “former,” “previous” | The old created order that has run its course and given way — same root reused in “First and the Last” title (21:6) | প্রথম (prothom). Risk: Medium — must not be confused with the divine title “প্রথম ও শেষ” (First and Last) applied to God/Christ in v.6; here it modifies “heaven/earth,” not a divine self-designation. |
| passed away | ἀπῆλθαν / apēlthan (from ἀπέρχομαι) | departed, went away | ceasing to exist, coming to an end | ”passed away,” “vanished,” “disappeared” | The old order’s definitive, not merely temporary, cessation | অপসৃত হয়েছে / চলে গেছে. Risk: Low. |
| sea | θάλασσα / thalassa | sea, ocean | in Revelation, also a recurring symbol of chaos, the abyss, and the origin of the beast (13:1) | “sea” | The sea’s disappearance signals the final removal of the primeval symbol of chaos and threat, not a literal geography claim | সমুদ্র (shomudro). Risk: Medium. Needs a translator note distinguishing the literal noun from its symbolic freight (chaos/abyss origin) established earlier in the book (see ch.13 below), so readers grasp why “no more sea” is a statement about cosmic order, not hydrology. |
Revelation 21:2
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| holy city | πόλις ἁγία / polis hagia | set-apart city | the eschatological, perfected community of God’s people | ”holy city,” “the city” | Corporate, communal image of the redeemed people, not a private individual reward | পবিত্র নগর (pobitro nogor) — পবিত্র is [BASELINE REUSE]. Risk: High (doctrine level) — must be read corporately (the whole Church) not as a literal future geopolitical city to be located on a map, which risks entanglement with contemporary Jerusalem/Israel political sensitivities in a South Asian Muslim-majority context. |
| new Jerusalem | Ἰερουσαλὴμ καινή / Ierousalēm kainē | new Jerusalem | the consummated dwelling of God with his people, contrasted with the old, physical, war-torn city | ”new Jerusalem,” “New Jerusalem” | Fulfillment of OT Zion promises; the Church glorified | নতুন যিরূশালেম. যিরূশালেম is the established Bengali Bible proper-name form (see Requirements doc citation table). Risk: High. Must carry an explanatory note that this is not the modern city of Jerusalem/Israel but the symbolic-theological fulfillment of God’s dwelling with his redeemed people — important given real political sensitivity around the proper name “Israel/Jerusalem” for readers in both Bangladesh and West Bengal. |
| coming down out of heaven | καταβαίνουσαν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ | descending from heaven | divine origin/gift, not a human achievement or human city-building project | ”coming down,” “descending” | The city is God’s gift, not humanity’s utopian construction project — reinforces grace, not works | স্বর্গ থেকে নেমে আসছে. Risk: Medium. |
| bride | νύμφη / nymphē | bride, young married/betrothed woman | a woman prepared for marriage; used metaphorically of a covenant people belonging exclusively to one husband | ”bride,” “the bride” | The Church’s covenantal, exclusive, loving union with Christ — Church as Bride of Christ doctrine’s key term | বধূ (bodhu). Risk: High. Bengali wedding custom (Hindu-majority and syncretic folk practice alike) attaches heavy ritual weight to the bride image (কন্যাদান “giving away the bride” as a quasi-religious transaction, red bridal saree, ritual adornment). Must be framed so the covenantal, chosen, loved-by-grace sense is clear and does not import a transactional kanyadan framework or reduce the metaphor to decorative wedding aesthetics. |
| adorned | κεκοσμημένην / kekosmēmenēn (from κοσμέω) | arranged, decorated, made beautiful | ordered, beautified, prepared | ”adorned,” “dressed,” “prepared” | The Church’s beauty is given/prepared by God, not self-achieved | সজ্জিত. Risk: Low. |
Revelation 21:3
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| dwelling / tabernacle | σκηνή / skēnē (verb σκηνώσει, “he will tabernacle”) | tent, tabernacle; to pitch a tent, to dwell | the OT tabernacle/tent of meeting; God’s abiding, tangible presence among his people; deliberately echoes John 1:14 (the Word “tabernacled” among us) | “dwelling,” “tabernacle,” “he will dwell/tabernacle” | God’s presence is no longer mediated through a tent or temple but is direct and permanent — climactic fulfillment of the Immanuel promise, theologically adjacent to (but not identical with) incarnation (দেহধারণ) | বাসস্থান / তিনি বসবাস করবেন. Risk: High. A flattened rendering like “ঘর” (house) loses the OT tabernacle echo entirely. Recommend “তিনি তাদের মধ্যে বসবাস করবেন” (he will dwell/tabernacle among them) with a translator note tying it to the tent-of-meeting background, since Bengali OT literacy is assumed low across both the Hindu-majority and Muslim-majority audience per the Requirements doc. |
| people | λαοί / laoi | peoples, a people | a covenant people belonging to God | ”people,” “his people,” “peoples” | Restoration of the Exodus covenant formula (“I will be their God, they will be my people”) | প্রজা / লোক. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| God with them | ὁ θεὸς μετ’ αὐτῶν | God with them | direct divine presence, unmediated | ”God himself will be with them,” “their God” | Final, unmediated fulfillment of covenant presence — the goal of all salvation history | ঈশ্বর — [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk carried over from Romans baseline: never ভগবান or আল্লাহ. |
Revelation 21:4
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| wipe away | ἐξαλείψει / exaleipsei | to wipe off, erase, obliterate | complete removal, not mere alleviation | ”wipe away,” “wipe clean” | God’s personal, tender action, not an impersonal process | মুছে দেবেন. Risk: Low. |
| death | θάνατος / thanatos | death | the reign of death since Genesis 3, and the “second death” of final judgment (20:14; 21:8) | “death” | Death’s final and complete abolition — climax of resurrection hope | মৃত্যু. Risk: High (doctrine level, tied to Resurrection of Christ/New Heaven and New Earth) though the word itself is Low-risk vocabulary; must be kept terminologically distinct from পুনরুত্থান (resurrection) and the later phrase দ্বিতীয় মৃত্যু (second death, v.8). |
| mourning / crying / pain | πένθος / κραυγή / πόνος | grief, outcry, suffering | grief-language triad for the totality of present suffering | ”mourning,” “crying,” “pain” | The full removal of suffering, not merely its reduction — an eschatological, not therapeutic, promise | শোক / ক্রন্দন / যাতনা. Risk: Low. |
| the first things | τὰ πρῶτα / ta prōta | the former things | the old created order, in all its brokenness | ”the former things,” “the old order” | Same root as “first heaven and first earth” (v.1) and “First and Last” (v.6) — deliberate wordplay the Bengali rendering should try to preserve | পূর্বেকার সমস্ত বিষয়. Risk: Medium — translator should try to keep the প্রথম root visible if natural, to preserve the verbal echo across vv.1, 4, 6. |
Revelation 21:5
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| the one seated on the throne | ὁ καθήμενος ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ | the one sitting on the throne | God’s sovereign rule, the central image of Revelation 4-5 and repeated across the book | ”he who was seated on the throne,” “the One on the throne” | Sovereignty of God over History — God, not chaos or the beast, occupies the throne of ultimate reality | সিংহাসনে যিনি বসে আছেন. সিংহাসন risk: Medium — see glossary; the throne-imagery is pervasive across the whole book and could echo Hindu iconography of enthroned deities if illustrated visually; textually the risk is lower but a note is still warranted for any illustrated study materials. |
| I make all things new | καινὰ ποιῶ πάντα | I am making all things new | ongoing, comprehensive, divine re-creative action | ”I am making everything new,” “I make all things new” | Direct declaration of the New Heaven and New Earth doctrine’s agent and scope: God himself, comprehensively | আমি সব কিছু নতুন করছি. Risk: High (doctrine level) — must retain the present/ongoing force (ποιῶ, present tense) rather than reducing it to a completed past act; this is God’s climactic, comprehensive renewal, matching but exceeding creation itself. |
| faithful and true | πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί / pistoi kai alēthinoi | faithful/trustworthy and true/genuine | reliability and correspondence-to-reality, of God’s words and (in 19:11) of Christ himself as a title | ”faithful and true,” “trustworthy and true” | Guarantees the certainty of the promises just given; the same phrase becomes Christ’s own title in 19:11, tying Sovereignty of God over History to Return and Reign of Christ | বিশ্বস্ত ও সত্য. বিশ্বস্ত shares the বিশ্বাস root — [BASELINE-ADJACENT]. Risk: High — the same phrase must be rendered identically at 19:11 for cross-reference consistency (per the baseline’s “same rendering across all documents” consistency rule). |
Revelation 21:6
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| It is done | Γέγονεν / Gegonen | it has happened, it is finished | perfect tense — a completed act with continuing effect | ”It is done,” “It has come to pass,” “It is finished” | Deliberate echo of τετέλεσται (“it is finished,” John 19:30); the cross and the consummation are theologically one arc | সম্পন্ন হলো. Risk: High — should be distinguished from, yet clearly resonate with, any established Bengali rendering of John 19:30 (“সমাপ্ত হলো” or similar) so the cross-to-consummation echo is not lost; flag for cross-document consistency check against Gospel-of-John materials if/when produced. |
| Alpha and Omega | Ἄλφα καὶ τὸ Ὦ | Alpha and Omega (first and last letters of Greek alphabet) | totality, eternal comprehensiveness | ”Alpha and Omega” | Divine eternity and comprehensiveness — a title for God (1:8) and for Christ (22:13), asserting Deity of Christ by identical self-predication | আলফা ও ওমেগা. Risk: Medium — retain the Greek letter-names as transliteration (standard in Bengali Bible tradition) but always pair with the gloss “আদি ও অন্ত” / “প্রথম ও শেষ” so readers unfamiliar with the Greek alphabet grasp the meaning, not just an exotic-sounding label. |
| beginning and end | ἀρχὴ καὶ τέλος / archē kai telos | beginning and end/goal | origin and consummation, source and purpose | ”the beginning and the end” | God as the alpha and telos of all history — Sovereignty of God over History | আদি ও অন্ত. Risk: Medium. |
| water of life | ὕδωρ τῆς ζωῆς / hydōr tēs zōēs | living water, water of life | life-giving, Spirit-given sustenance, echoing Isaiah 55 and John 4/7 | ”water of life,” “living water” | Christ/the Spirit’s free, sustaining gift to all who thirst — recurs at 22:1, 17 | জীবন জল. Risk: High — must be rendered identically at 22:1 and 22:17 (consistency rule); avoid conflating with generic “sacred water” (e.g., Ganges water, তীর্থের জল) purification imagery prevalent in Bengali Hindu practice — this is a life-giving gift from God, not a ritually efficacious substance. |
| freely / as a gift | δωρεάν / dōrean | without cost, gratis, as a free gift | given without payment or merit | ”freely,” “without cost,” “as a gift” | Direct reinforcement of the grace doctrine (অনুগ্রহ, Romans baseline) — salvation’s final consummation is received, not earned | অবাধে / বিনামূল্যে / অনুগ্রহে. Risk: High — must preserve the grace-not-merit contrast exactly as the Romans baseline requires for Romans 4:4-5 and 11:5-6; recommend পairing with অনুগ্রহে (in/by grace) to keep vocabulary consistent with the established grace term. |
Revelation 21:7
Greek: ὁ νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός.
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| the one who conquers/overcomes | ὁ νικῶν / ho nikōn (from νικάω, nikaō) | the one who wins, is victorious, prevails | victory in a contest, war, or trial; in Revelation, the repeated refrain closing each of the seven letters (chs.2-3) and the climactic promise here | ”he who overcomes,” “the one who conquers,” “the victor,” “he who is victorious” | Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil and Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution converge in this single term — victory belongs to every enduring believer, not only to spiritual elites or martyrs | যে জয়ী হয় / বিজয়ী. Risk: High — this exact participle-refrain recurs 8 times (2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21; 21:7) and must be rendered with one consistent Bengali phrase throughout for cross-reference integrity. Must not be softened into worldly military conquest language, nor into a karma/siddhi-style “spiritual attainment through effort” framing — victory here is granted to the one who perseveres in faith, grounded in Christ’s own prior victory (5:5; 17:14). |
| inherit | κληρονομήσει / klēronomēsei (from κληρονομέω) | to receive as an heir, to inherit | receiving what belongs to one by virtue of family/covenant relationship, not by purchase or merit | ”will inherit,” “will receive as an inheritance” | Ties directly to the adoption doctrine already established in Romans (দত্তকপুত্রতা — full son-status with complete inheritance rights); the overcomer inherits as an adopted child of God, not a hired worker | অধিকার/উত্তরাধিকার লাভ করবে. Risk: High — should echo, not contradict, the Romans baseline’s adoption/inheritance framing. |
| I will be his God, and he will be my son | ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός | I will be to him God, and he will be to me son | covenant sonship formula (2 Sam 7:14 applied to David’s heir, now to every overcomer) | “I will be his God and he will be my son” | CRITICAL DISAMBIGUATION REQUIRED: this “son” (υἱός, huios) is the believer’s covenant/adoptive sonship, not Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal Sonship (the baseline’s Critical-risk ঈশ্বরের পুত্র, son_of_god, reserved exclusively for Christ). | পুত্র (generic, for the overcomer). Risk: Critical by association — a translator note is mandatory at this verse: “এখানে ‘পুত্র’ খ্রীষ্টের অনন্য, একমাত্র পুত্রত্ব (‘ঈশ্বরের পুত্র’) বোঝায় না, বরং বিশ্বাসীর দত্তকপুত্রতা বোঝায়” (this “son” does not mean Christ’s unique Sonship but the believer’s adoptive sonship), so Bengali readers — especially Muslim-background readers already primed to hear “Son of God” claims as either blasphemous or metaphorical — do not conflate ordinary believers’ adoption with the unique divine-Sonship claim central to the Sonship of Christ doctrine. |
Revelation 21:8
| Term | Original / Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| cowardly | δειλοῖς / deilois | fearful, timid, cowardly | those who abandon faith/witness under pressure rather than persevere | ”the cowardly,” “the fearful” | Direct contrast with the overcomer of v.7 — failure of Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | ভীরু. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| unbelieving | ἀπίστοις / apistois (negation of πιστός) | without faith, faithless | those lacking trust in Christ; shares the বিশ্বাস root negated | ”the unbelieving,” “unfaithful,” “those without faith” | Direct negation of faith (Romans baseline বিশ্বাস); reinforces that final judgment turns on the presence or absence of trust in Christ | অবিশ্বাসী. Risk: High (as negation of the High-risk বিশ্বাস term) — must not be softened to mere “doubt” but should retain the decisive, settled sense of unbelief as a state, not a momentary lapse. |
| detestable / vile | ἐβδελυγμένοις / ebdelygmenois | abominable, detestable, morally repugnant | often used of idolatrous or ritually/morally abhorrent practice in LXX usage | ”the detestable,” “the vile,” “the abominable” | Universal moral culpability, not a narrow ritual-purity category | ঘৃণ্য / জঘন্য. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| murderers | φονεῦσι / phoneusi | murderers, those who kill | unlawful killing | ”murderers” | হত্যাকারী. Risk: Low. | |
| sexually immoral | πόρνοις / pornois | those who engage in illicit sexual immorality; related to πόρνη (“prostitute,” used of Babylon in ch.17) | sexual immorality broadly, and cultic/covenant unfaithfulness metaphorically (as in the “great prostitute” of Babylon) | “the sexually immoral,” “fornicators” | ব্যভিচারী. Risk: Medium — the same root recurs literally as Babylon’s title (the great “prostitute,” 17:1, 5); translators should note the wordplay linking personal sexual sin here to the systemic idolatrous “prostitution” of Babylon later in the book. | |
| sorcerers | φαρμάκοις / pharmakois (root: φαρμακεία, pharmakeia — drugs, potions, magic arts) | those who practice sorcery/magic arts, often via drugs/potions | occult practice, magical manipulation of unseen powers | ”sorcerers,” “those who practice magic arts” | যাদুকর. Risk: High — directly names a live, widespread cultural practice in rural Bengal (তন্ত্র-মন্ত্র tantra-mantra ritual, ওঝা/ফকির ojha/fakir folk-healers invoking spirits, charms, amulets). This is not an abstract or archaic category for the Bengali reader; care is needed to condemn the practice as biblically defined without appearing to mock or single out specific living folk-religious practitioners in a pastorally hostile way. | |
| idolaters | εἰδωλολάτραις / eidōlolatrais (εἴδωλον, “idol/image” + λατρεία, “worship/service”) | worshippers of images/idols | worship directed at a created image rather than the true God | ”idolaters,” “those who worship idols” | CRITICAL — GREATEST SINGLE COLLISION RISK IN REVELATION. | মূর্তিপূজক. Risk: CRITICAL. মূর্তিপূজা (image/idol worship) is the literal, ordinary Bengali description of mainstream Hindu murti-based temple and home worship (Durga, Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati images, etc.), practiced by the large Hindu-background readership in West Bengal. A flat rendering risks being heard as a direct denunciation of Hindu religious practice specifically, rather than the universal biblical category of displacing the Creator with any created image. Required mitigation: any teaching note accompanying this verse must state clearly that “idolater” names a universal category (the substitution of any created thing for the Creator, cf. Romans 1:23, already established in the Romans curriculum) and is not a targeted ethnic-religious accusation; pastoral framing should draw the doctrine from the whole canon’s teaching, not isolate this verse as a polemic against neighbors’ worship. |
| liars | ψευδέσιν / pseudesin (from ψεῦδος, “falsehood”) | liars, those who speak/live falsehood | falsehood in speech and life, contrasted with ἀληθινός (“true,” v.5) | “liars,” “all who love and practice falsehood” | Direct antonym-pairing with “true” (ἀληθινός) in v.5 — the vice-list closes the chapter by mirroring its opening virtue-terms | মিথ্যাবাদী. Risk: Low, but note the deliberate literary antonym-pairing with সত্য (true, v.5) for translator awareness. |
| lake of fire and sulfur | λίμνῃ…πυρὶ καὶ θείῳ | lake burning with fire and sulfur (brimstone) | final place of judgment for the unrepentant, first introduced 19:20; 20:10, 14-15 | ”the lake of fire,” “the lake that burns with fire and sulfur” | Judgment of the Wicked doctrine’s central image | আগুন ও গন্ধকে জ্বলন্ত হ্রদ. Risk: High — must be presented as the consistent, single referent used at 19:20, 20:10, 20:14-15, 21:8 (consistency rule); avoid rendering as a vague “hell” synonym that flattens Revelation’s specific imagery. |
| second death | ὁ θάνατος ὁ δεύτερος / ho thanatos ho deuteros | the second death | final, eternal separation from God, distinct from first (physical) death | ”the second death” | Direct antonym of the “second birth”/regeneration and of the “first resurrection” (20:5-6) — a technical eschatological term unique to Revelation (2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8) | দ্বিতীয় মৃত্যু. Risk: High — must be rendered identically at all four occurrences (2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8) for doctrinal and cross-reference consistency. |
Synthesis of 21:1-8: This passage is the theological hinge of the whole book: it resolves the Sovereignty of God over History (the throne, “It is done”), consummates the New Heaven and New Earth, completes the Church as Bride of Christ image, restates Assurance of God’s Final Victory over Evil (the overcomer’s inheritance), and closes with the Judgment of the Wicked as the passage’s dark counter-panel to the bright hope of vv.1-7. Every Critical/High flag above (মূর্তিপূজক, বধূ, দ্বিতীয় মৃত্যু, নতুন যিরূশালেম, পুত্র-disambiguation, জয়ী হয়) should be routed to human theologian review per the doctrine risk registry’s routing convention.
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Semantic Analysis of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 — Prologue and Vision of the Son of Man
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| revelation/apocalypse | ἀποκάλυψις / apokalypsis | an unveiling, uncovering | ”revelation,” “apocalypse” | Genre-defining term: God unveiling hidden realities, not a puzzle to decode by human ingenuity — governs the whole Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine | প্রত্যাদেশ (prottadesh, “unveiling/revelation”). Risk: Medium — establish at the outset that this is disclosed truth from God, not esoteric/occult prophecy resembling Bengali folk জ্যোতিষ (astrological) prediction (cf. Romans baseline’s প্রফেসী/গণনা distinction, reused here). |
| Jesus Christ | Ἰησοῦς Χριστός | — | — | — | যীশু খ্রীষ্ট — [BASELINE REUSE, Critical] |
| faithful witness | ὁ μάρτυς ὁ πιστός / ho martys ho pistos | the faithful witness | ”the faithful witness” | Christ’s own title, combining testimony (μάρτυς) and faithfulness (πιστός); establishes the pattern believers are called to imitate under persecution | বিশ্বস্ত সাক্ষী. Risk: High. See সাক্ষী/মার্তুস analysis below (Critical term); Christ himself is called সাক্ষী before any believer is — the pattern-setting reference. |
| firstborn from the dead | πρωτότοκος τῶν νεκρῶν / prōtotokos tōn nekrōn | first-born of the dead ones | ”firstborn from the dead,” “firstborn of the dead” | Christ’s resurrection preeminence — rank/inheritance-priority, not “first created” in a chronological/Arian sense | মৃতগণের মধ্যে প্রথমজাত. Risk: High — must not be read as implying Christ was the first created being; πρωτότοκος here denotes preeminence and inheritance rank (as in Colossians 1:15/18), consistent with the Deity of Christ and Resurrection of Christ doctrines already Critical-flagged in the Romans baseline. |
| ruler of the kings of the earth | ὁ ἄρχων τῶν βασιλέων τῆς γῆς | ruler of the kings of the earth | ”ruler of kings on earth” | Christ’s present, ongoing sovereignty over all earthly power — Sovereignty of God over History | পৃথিবীর রাজাদের শাসক. Risk: Medium. |
| kingdom and priests | βασιλείαν, ἱερεῖς / basileian, hiereis | a kingdom, priests | ”a kingdom,” “priests” | The priesthood of all believers — every believer, not a separate caste or clerical elite, serves and worships God directly | রাজ্য, যাজক. Risk: Medium-High — যাজক (priest) must not be rendered পুরোহিত, the term culturally tied to the Hindu Brahmin priestly caste; this preserves the same caste-hierarchy sensitivity the Romans baseline’s Unity of Jews and Gentiles doctrine flags. |
| Son of Man | υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου / huios anthrōpou | son of man | ”son of man,” “one like a son of man” | Danielic (Dan 7:13) title of end-time judgment authority given to Christ — not a claim of mere humanity but of divine-given dominion | মনুষ্যপুত্র. Risk: High — must not be flattened to “a human being”; this is a specific messianic/judicial title tied to Return and Reign of Christ. |
| the One who is, who was, and who is to come | ὁ ὢν καὶ ὁ ἦν καὶ ὁ ἐρχόμενος | the Being, the Was, the Coming One | ”who is, and who was, and who is to come” | Echoes the divine Name (Exodus 3:14/LXX ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ὢν); asserts God’s eternal self-existence — foundational to Sovereignty of God over History | যিনি আছেন, যিনি ছিলেন এবং যিনি আসছেন. Risk: High — theologically load-bearing divine self-designation; must be rendered with full clause structure, not abbreviated. |
| Alpha and Omega | see 21:6 above | — | — | — | আলফা ও ওমেগা — cross-refer 21:6 entry above for consistency. |
| keys of Death and Hades | κλεῖς τοῦ θανάτου καὶ τοῦ ᾍδου | the keys of Death and Hades | ”the keys of Death and Hades” | Christ’s authority over the realm of the dead, secured by his own resurrection | মৃত্যু ও পাতালের চাবি. Risk: High — see পাতাল/Hades collision note under Chapter 6/20 below; a translator note distinguishing this from the Hindu Puranic Patala-loka is required at first occurrence. |
| seven churches / lampstands | ἑπτὰ ἐκκλησίαι, ἑπτὰ λυχνίαι | seven assemblies, seven lampstands | ”seven churches,” “seven lampstands” | Local congregations as light-bearers; ἐκκλησία reuses the Romans baseline মণ্ডলী | সাত মণ্ডলী, সাত দীপাধার — মণ্ডলী [BASELINE REUSE, Medium]. Risk: Low for দীপাধার (lampstand), standard word. |
Chapters 2-3 — The Seven Letters
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| the one who conquers/overcomes | νικάω / nikaō | see full entry at 21:7 | ”he who overcomes” | Recurs 7 times as the letters’ refrain — Perseverance and Assurance of Final Victory | জয়ী হওয়া — cross-refer 21:7 entry; render identically at 2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21. |
| tree of life / paradise | ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς, παράδεισος | tree of life, paradise | ”tree of life,” “paradise of God” | Restoration of Eden’s access, forfeited at the Fall — ties New Heaven and New Earth back to Genesis | জীবন বৃক্ষ, স্বর্গোদ্যান. Risk: Medium. |
| synagogue of Satan | συναγωγὴ τοῦ Σατανᾶ | assembly of Satan | ”synagogue of Satan” | Self-professed religious claimants opposing the true faith — NOT a condemnation of ethnic Jewish identity or Judaism as such | শয়তানের সমাজগৃহ. Risk: High — requires an explanatory note (parallel to the Romans baseline’s careful, non-supersessionist handling of Israel/Jews in the Unity doctrine) to prevent misreading as ethnic or communal condemnation, a live sensitivity in a religiously plural South Asian setting. |
| hidden manna | τὸ μάννα τὸ κεκρυμμένον | the hidden manna | ”hidden manna” | Christ as spiritual sustenance, echoing Exodus manna — requires OT background (same pattern as the Romans baseline’s দায়ূদের বংশ note) | গুপ্ত মান্না. Risk: Medium — OT literacy prerequisite. |
| morning star | ὁ ἀστὴρ ὁ πρωϊνός | the morning star | ”morning star” | Messianic self-title of Christ (also 22:16) | প্রভাতী তারা. Risk: Medium — must not be conflated with Bengali/South Asian astrology (জ্যোতিষ, horoscope “star” reading widely practiced); this is a title of Christ’s messianic dawn, not an astrological reference — reuses the Romans baseline’s প্রফেট/জ্যোতিষী distinction logic. |
| key of David | ἡ κλεὶς Δαυίδ | the key of David | ”the key of David” | Christ’s Davidic, messianic authority to open/shut — reuses established দায়ূদ | দায়ূদের চাবি. দায়ূদ [BASELINE REUSE]. Risk: Medium. |
| lukewarm | χλιαρός / chliaros | tepid, neither hot nor cold | ”lukewarm” | Spiritual apathy — a state worse than open hostility | কুসুম-গরম / উষ্ণ. Risk: Low. |
| Amen, the faithful and true witness | ὁ Ἀμήν, ὁ μάρτυς ὁ πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός | the Amen, the faithful and true witness | ”the Amen, the faithful and true witness” | Christ’s self-designation combining আমেন with the ম্যার্টিউস/piston/alēthinos cluster already flagged | আমেন, বিশ্বস্ত ও সত্য সাক্ষী. আমেন [BASELINE REUSE]. Risk: High for সাক্ষী (see Ch.6/11 note below). |
| book of life | βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς | book of life | ”book of life” | Assurance of final salvation, recorded by name — see full treatment ch.20-21 | জীবন পুস্তক. Risk: High. |
| white stone / new name | ψῆφος λευκή, ὄνομα καινόν | white pebble/stone, new name | ”white stone,” “new name” | Personal, intimate assurance and new identity in Christ | শুভ্র পাথর, নতুন নাম. Risk: Low-Medium (imagery unfamiliar to Bengali readers, needs brief cultural gloss re: ancient token/voting-stone custom). |
| Nicolaitans, Balaam, Jezebel, Antipas | proper names | — | — | Historical false-teaching figures/movements | Transliterate: নীকলাইতীয়, বালাম, ঈষেবল, আন্তিপাস. Risk: Low (proper names). |
Chapters 4-5 — Throne Room Vision and the Lamb
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| throne | θρόνος / thronos | seat of authority | ”throne” | Central image of Sovereignty of God over History, occurring ~40+ times in Revelation | সিংহাসন. Risk: Medium — pervasive imagery; flag once, applies throughout. |
| Almighty | παντοκράτωρ / pantokratōr | ruler of all, all-powerful one | ”Almighty,” “the Almighty” | Recurs 9 times in Revelation (1:8; 4:8; 11:17; 15:3; 16:7, 14; 19:6, 15; 21:22) as a divine title of total sovereignty | সর্বশক্তিমান. Risk: High. This is the single most theologically important term-collision case in the whole book: সর্বশক্তিমান contains the শক্তি root that the Romans baseline explicitly forbids for God’s saving “power” (dynamis theou, Rom 1:16) precisely because of Bengal’s Shakta-Hindu (Durga/Kali) goddess-power associations. However, সর্বশক্তিমান ঈশ্বর/প্রভু is the deeply established, unavoidable Bengali Bible title for “the Lord God Almighty” across all major translation traditions, unlike দ্যুনামিস in Romans 1:16 which had no fixed prior idiom. Recommendation: retain সর্বশক্তিমান as the established rendering (breaking it would create a jarring, unrecognizable neologism across dozens of doxological occurrences), but flag every occurrence for translator-note treatment clarifying that পantokratōr denotes God’s total, personal sovereignty over history and creation — not an impersonal or goddess-associated power-force — and route to human theologian review given the frequency and doxological centrality of this title in Revelation. |
| Lamb | ἀρνίον / arnion | little lamb, lamb | The dominant Christological title in Revelation (28 occurrences), depicting Christ as the slain-yet-triumphant sacrificial Lamb | ”the Lamb,” “the Lamb of God” | Worship of the Lamb doctrine’s central term |
| worthy | ἄξιος / axios | deserving, of equal value/weight | ”worthy” | The Lamb’s exclusive worthiness to open the scroll and receive worship — direct assertion of Deity of Christ via the worship due only to God | যোগ্য. Risk: High — Rev 4:11 and 5:9, 12 use ἄξιος of both the Father and the Lamb identically, a deliberate parity claim that must not be diluted in translation. |
| new song | ᾆσμα καινόν | a new song | ”a new song” | Worship uniquely evoked by redemption — echoes καινός theme (see 21:1, 5) | নতুন গান. Risk: Low. |
| twenty-four elders | πρεσβύτεροι εἴκοσι τέσσαρες | 24 elders | ”the twenty-four elders” | Representative heavenly worship-leaders (likely representing the whole redeemed people, OT+NT) | চব্বিশজন প্রাচীন. প্রাচীন risk: Medium. |
| four living creatures | τέσσαρα ζῷα | four living beings | ”four living creatures” | Angelic worship-leaders, echoing Ezekiel 1/Isaiah 6 | চারটি জীবন্ত প্রাণী. Risk: Low. |
| seven Spirits of God | ἑπτὰ πνεύματα τοῦ θεοῦ | seven spirits of God | ”seven Spirits of God” | Symbolic (sevenfold-complete) representation of the one Holy Spirit’s fullness, not seven separate spirit-beings | সপ্ত আত্মা. আত্মা relates to পবিত্র আত্মা [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk: High — mandatory translator note preventing a polytheistic/multiplicity misreading; this is the one Holy Spirit in the fullness of his sevenfold work, not seven separate divine agents. |
| harps / bowls of incense | κιθάραι, φιάλαι θυμιαμάτων | harps, bowls of incense (representing the prayers of the saints) | “harps,” “golden bowls full of incense” | Symbolic representation of the prayers of God’s people ascending to him | বীণা, ধূপে পূর্ণ পাত্র. See Critical incense flag in Ch.8 below (same term). বীণা risk: Medium (association with the Hindu goddess Saraswati’s veena in devotional/bhakti iconography — clarify this is a worship instrument generically, not evoking a specific deity). |
| scroll | βιβλίον / biblion | scroll, book | ”scroll,” “book” | God’s sovereign plan for history, sealed until the Lamb alone is found worthy to open it | পুস্তক / গ্রন্থ. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| Lion of the tribe of Judah, Root of David | λέων ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδα, ἡ ῥίζα Δαβίδ | Lion from Judah’s tribe, David’s root | ”the Lion of the tribe of Judah,” “the Root of David” | Messianic royal titles fulfilling OT promise (Gen 49:9-10; Isa 11:1, 10) | যিহূদা-বংশের সিংহ, দায়ূদের মূল. দায়ূদ [BASELINE REUSE]. Risk: High — same Davidic Covenant sensitivity flagged in the Romans baseline (দায়ূদের বংশ / seed_of_david) applies; requires OT background note. |
Chapter 6 — The Four Horsemen and the Souls Under the Altar
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| seal (of the scroll) | σφραγίς / sphragis | seal, signet | ”seal” | Divine authorization/secrecy, opened progressively by the Lamb alone — Sovereignty of God over History | সীলমোহর. Risk: Medium. |
| conquer/overcome (of the white horse rider) | νικάω | see 21:7 | — | Even judgment-imagery participates in the νικάω theme, but here as a warning of conquest by hostile forces, contrasted with the believer’s true victory in Christ | Cross-refer জয়ী হওয়া; note the deliberate contrast between worldly military “conquest” here and the believer’s Christ-given victory in chs.2-3/21. |
| wrath (of the Lamb) | ὀργή / orgē | settled anger, judicial wrath | ”wrath,” “the wrath of the Lamb” | God’s/Christ’s righteous, judicial response to persistent evil — Judgment of the Wicked | ক্রোধ. Risk: High. Bengal’s dominant devotional imagination includes vivid wrathful-goddess iconography (Kali’s fierce, blood-associated wrath; Durga’s warrior-wrath against demons) that could color ক্রোধ with an unintended mythological register of capricious or ritually-appeased divine fury. Translator notes should consistently frame God’s/the Lamb’s wrath as righteous, judicial, and directed at persistent, unrepented evil — never capricious, never appeasable by ritual offering, and never gendered/goddess-associated. |
| how long? | ἕως πότε | until when? | “how long?” | The martyrs’ cry for vindication — ties Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | আর কতকাল?. Risk: Low. |
| souls under the altar | αἱ ψυχαὶ ὑποκάτω τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου | the souls beneath the altar | ”the souls under the altar” | Martyrs’ present, conscious, vindication-awaiting state | যজ্ঞবেদির নীচে থাকা প্রাণ. Risk: Medium — যজ্ঞ root (sacrifice) may carry a faint Vedic sacrificial-ritual association; acceptable as the established Bengali Bible term for altar (বেদি/যজ্ঞবেদি) but worth a brief clarifying gloss that this is the once-for-all sacrifice fulfilled in Christ, not an ongoing ritual system. |
Chapter 7 — The 144,000 and the Great Multitude
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| sealed / seal (on foreheads) | σφραγίζω / sphragizō | to mark/seal for protection and ownership | ”sealed,” “the seal of the living God” | Divine ownership and protection of God’s people through tribulation — ties Sovereignty of God over History and Perseverance | চিহ্নিত করা / সীলমোহর দেওয়া. Risk: Medium. |
| 144,000 | ἑκατὸν τεσσεράκοντα τέσσαρες χιλιάδες | symbolic number (12x12x1000) | “144,000” | Symbolic completeness of God’s covenant people (12 tribes squared, multiplied), not a literal census figure — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | Numeral retained as-is: ১,৪৪,০০০ / 144,000 (Arabic numerals per house style, per Requirements doc citation convention). Risk: High — see general Symbolic Numbers glossary entry; must not be read as a literal head-count excluding all others, which would contradict the “great multitude…from every nation” immediately following in the same chapter. |
| great multitude | ὄχλος πολύς | a great crowd | ”a great multitude” | Universal scope of salvation — every nation, tribe, people, language — ties Universal Scope of the Gospel (Romans baseline doctrine) forward into Revelation’s climax | বিশাল জনতা. Risk: Medium. |
| white robes | στολαὶ λευκαί / stolai leukai | white robes | ”white robes” | Purity and victory granted (not self-achieved) to the redeemed | শুভ্র বস্ত্র. Risk: Medium-High — white clothing in Bengali culture (both Hindu widow’s mourning dress and ascetic renunciate’s garb) can carry associations of loss, mourning, or self-denial rather than celebratory purity and victory; a clarifying note distinguishing biblical white-robe imagery (joyful, victorious purity, freely given) from these cultural associations is recommended. |
| washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb | ἔπλυναν τὰς στολὰς αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ αἵματι τοῦ ἀρνίου | washed robes in the Lamb’s blood | ”washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb” | Christ’s atoning blood as the sole means of purification — reinforces grace, not merit, and reuses মেষশিশু | মেষশিশুর রক্তে বস্ত্র ধুয়েছে. Risk: High — direct doctrinal tie to the atonement (already Critical-flagged generally in the Romans-derived escalation rules for “atonement/propitiation language”); route for human theologian review. |
| the Lamb as shepherd | τὸ ἀρνίον ποιμανεῖ αὐτούς | the Lamb will shepherd them | ”the Lamb will be their shepherd” | Paradox of the sacrificial Lamb also being the caring Shepherd — pastoral comfort within apocalyptic judgment | মেষশিশু তাদের পালক হবেন. Risk: Medium. |
Chapters 8-9 — The Seven Trumpets
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| trumpet | σάλπιγξ / salpinx | trumpet, war-horn | ”trumpet” | Signals of divine judgment unfolding in history — Sovereignty of God over History | তূরী. Risk: Low. |
| incense (= prayers of the saints) | θυμίαμα / thymiama | incense, aromatic offering | ”incense,” “the prayers of the saints” | The prayers of God’s people ascending to him, pictured as fragrant incense before the throne (5:8; 8:3-4) | ধূপ. Risk: CRITICAL. ধূপ is the literal, everyday Bengali word for the incense burned in Hindu পূজা ritual (aarti, temple and home worship of murtis). Rendering “the prayers of the saints” as ধূপ without extremely careful framing risks implying that Christian prayer functions like a ritual offering presented to multiple deities in the way Hindu incense-offering does, or, conversely, risks Hindu-background readers reading their own familiar devotional incense-practice directly into the text with all of its accompanying ritual assumptions. Mandatory mitigation: always render as a simile/metaphor explicitly (“পবিত্র লোকদের প্রার্থনা যেন ধূপের মতো ঈশ্বরের সামনে ওঠে” — “the prayers of the saints rise before God like incense”) rather than a bare noun, and add a translator note that this is a symbolic, one-time apocalyptic image, not sanction for any liturgical incense practice. Route to human theologian review. |
| wormwood | Ἄψινθος / Apsinthos | bitter plant name; also the star’s proper name in 8:11 | ”Wormwood” | Judgment turning sustenance bitter/deadly — symbolic, not a literal botanical/astronomical identification | নাগদানা / আপসিন্থস (transliterated proper name preferred for the star). Risk: Low-Medium (avoid literalizing as a real comet/asteroid identification, per Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation). |
| abyss / bottomless pit | ἄβυσσος / abyssos | the deep, the bottomless pit | ”the abyss,” “the bottomless pit” | The confining prison of demonic powers, under God’s sovereign control — not a rival cosmic realm | অগাধ গহ্বর. Risk: High. AVOID পাতাল (the common Bengali word sometimes used for “the abyss/underworld”), because পাতাল is specifically the Hindu Puranic term for one of the seven nether realms (lokas), traditionally associated with Nagas (serpent-beings) — an unwanted resonance given Revelation’s own serpent/dragon imagery elsewhere in the book. অগাধ গহ্বর (“bottomless pit/cavity”) avoids this collision. |
| Abaddon / Apollyon | Ἀβαδδών / Ἀπολλύων | Destroyer (Hebrew/Greek names for the same figure) | “Abaddon,” “Apollyon,” “the Destroyer” | The demonic king of the locust-plague, under God’s permissive sovereignty | আবাদ্দোন (অর্থাৎ ধ্বংসকারী). Risk: Low-Medium (proper name; gloss the meaning). |
| locusts | ἀκρίδες | locusts | ”locusts” | Symbolic demonic affliction, echoing the Exodus plague | শলাবৃক্ষপোকা / ফড়িং. Risk: Low. |
No new theologically load-bearing terms beyond সুসমাচার (reused for “the mystery of God” proclamation context) and πγγελία-type prophetic-fulfillment vocabulary already covered in Ch.1’s প্রত্যাদেশ entry. The “sweet in the mouth, bitter in the stomach” scroll image (γλυκὺ, πικρανθήσεται) is a vivid literary image rather than a fixed theological term requiring glossary treatment; render naturally as মধুর মতো মিষ্টি / পেটে তিক্ত with no special risk flag beyond general narrative fidelity.
Chapter 11 — The Two Witnesses and the Seventh Trumpet
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| witnesses | μάρτυρες / martyres | witnesses; the semantic root that later develops the sense “martyr" | "the two witnesses” | Faithful, prophetic testimony maintained even unto death — the direct semantic bridge from courtroom “testimony” to “martyrdom” | সাক্ষী. Risk: CRITICAL. This is the pivot-term for the whole book’s persecution theology. μάρτυς/μαρτυρία shifts across Revelation from a legal/testimonial sense (“witness,” 1:5) to the developed sense “one who dies for that testimony” (martyr, 2:13; 6:9; 17:6). The Bengali word শহীদ (“martyr”) must never be used — শহীদ is the specific Islamic-idiom term for a martyr who dies in submission to God/in jihad, carrying a theology of martyrdom (and, in some usages, of merit toward final judgment) fundamentally different from the biblical pattern of dying while testifying to Christ’s finished, once-for-all work. Render consistently as সাক্ষী (“witness”) throughout, and where the “died for it” sense must be made explicit, use a descriptive phrase such as “যে সাক্ষ্য দিতে দিতে প্রাণ দিয়েছে” (“who gave his life while bearing witness”) rather than a single loaded noun. Route to human theologian review at every occurrence tied to Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution. |
| measuring the temple | μετρέω τὸν ναόν | to measure the temple | ”measure the temple” | Symbolic marking-off of what belongs to God amid coming judgment — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | মন্দির পরিমাপ করা. See ναός/temple Critical note under Ch.21 below (same term). |
| ”The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord” | ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ κόσμου… τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν | the kingdom of the world became the Lord’s kingdom | ”the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ” | Climactic declaration of Return and Reign of Christ; reuses ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য (kingdom of God) and প্রভু (Lord) | জগতের রাজ্য আমাদের প্রভুর রাজ্য হয়ে গেছে — reuses [BASELINE REUSE: প্রভু, Critical]. Risk: High (doctrine level). |
Chapter 12 — The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| woman clothed with the sun | γυνὴ περιβεβλημένη τὸν ἥλιον | a woman clothed with the sun | ”a woman clothed with the sun” | Symbolic figure representing God’s covenant people (Israel/the Church) through whom the Messiah comes, not a literal individual — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | সূর্য দিয়ে বেষ্টিত এক স্ত্রীলোক. Risk: High — a translator note is needed clarifying this is a corporate/symbolic figure (the covenant people), preventing readers from either (a) a purely Marian identification without qualification, or (b) confusion with goddess-imagery in Bengali religious art (solar/lunar-adorned female deity iconography, e.g., some Durga/Lakshmi depictions), which this text does not intend to evoke. |
| dragon | δράκων / drakōn | serpent-dragon, mythic monster | ”the dragon,” “the great dragon” | Satan’s cosmic, hostile identity — the ultimate antagonist of the whole book | নাগ. Risk: CRITICAL. Bengal has a deeply rooted folk-Hindu serpent-goddess cult centered on Manasa Devi, one of the most widely venerated folk deities across rural Bengal (both West Bengal and Bangladesh), with major festivals (Manasa Puja) and a rich oral-epic tradition (Manasamangal). Rendering δράκων as নাগ risks activating this entirely unrelated devotional complex for Bengali readers. Mandatory mitigation: never leave নাগ standing alone as a bare reference to “the dragon” — always retain the full apposition Revelation itself supplies at 12:9 and 20:2 (“that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan”) so the qualifying identification (দিয়াবল, শয়তান) immediately disambiguates the image. Route to human theologian review at every occurrence (12:3-17; 13:2, 4, 11; 16:13; 20:2). |
| that ancient serpent | ὁ ὄφις ὁ ἀρχαῖος | the ancient serpent | ”that ancient serpent” | Identifies the dragon with the Genesis 3 serpent — narrative continuity across the whole canon | সেই প্রাচীন সাপ. Risk: High — should be paired with নাগ per the mitigation above, and should echo whatever established Bengali Bible rendering exists for the Genesis 3 serpent (সাপ), for canonical consistency. |
| the Devil and Satan | ὁ διάβολος καὶ ὁ Σατανᾶς | the Devil and Satan | ”the Devil,” “Satan” | Two names for one figure — accuser (διάβολος) and adversary (Σατανᾶς) | দিয়াবল ও শয়তান. Risk: High for শয়তান specifically — শয়তান is shared vocabulary with Bengali Muslim usage (shaitan/Iblis), which is broadly compatible at the level of “cosmic adversary” but carries a distinct Islamic narrative (Iblis’s refusal to bow to Adam, a discrete fall-narrative) that does not map exactly onto the biblical Satan’s role across Genesis-Revelation; a brief contextual note is advisable when the term first carries significant doctrinal weight. দিয়াবল is the Christian-specific transliterated term with lower collision risk and should be paired with শয়তান per the text’s own double-naming. |
| male child (the Messiah) | υἱὸν ἄρσεν | a male child | ”a son, a male child” | The Messiah’s birth from within the covenant people, immediately caught up to God’s throne — compressed nativity-to-ascension image | পুত্র সন্তান. Risk: Medium (ties to দেহধারণ/incarnation doctrine already Critical in the Romans baseline; reuse that framing). |
| “overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” | ἐνίκησαν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ αἷμα τοῦ ἀρνίου καὶ διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς μαρτυρίας αὐτῶν | they conquered him by the Lamb’s blood and their testimony’s word | ”they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony” | Combines νικάω (conquer), মেষশিশুর blood (atonement), and সাক্ষ্য (testimony) into a single programmatic verse for Perseverance and Faithful Witness under Persecution | তারা মেষশিশুর রক্তে ও তাদের সাক্ষ্যের বচনে তাকে পরাজিত করেছে. Risk: High — this verse is a doctrinal keystone; route to human theologian review; ensure জয়ী/পরাজিত (victory language), মেষশিশু, and সাক্ষ্য are each rendered per their established forms above. |
Chapter 13 — The Beast from the Sea and the Beast from the Earth
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| beast | θηρίον / thērion | wild beast, monster | ”the beast” | Symbolic embodiment of oppressive, idolatrous political-religious power opposing God’s people — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | পশু. Risk: Medium-High — must be consistently distinguished from ζῷα (“living creatures,” the worshipping heavenly beings of ch.4-5, rendered জীবন্ত প্রাণী); using the same Bengali word for both would blur a deliberate Greek contrast (benevolent heavenly ζῷα vs. malevolent θηρίον). |
| false prophet | ψευδοπροφήτης / pseudoprophētēs | false prophet | ”the false prophet” | Counterfeit religious authority in the service of the beast — negation of the established ভাববাদী (prophet, Romans baseline, Low risk) | ভণ্ড ভাববাদী. Risk: Medium — reuses ভাববাদী [BASELINE REUSE]. |
| mark of the beast | χάραγμα / charagma | mark, stamp, engraved brand | ”the mark of the beast” | Symbolic sign of allegiance to the beast’s system, contrasted with the seal of God on the 144,000 (ch.7) — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | ছাপ / চিহ্ন. Risk: High — recommend ছাপ (a physical stamp/brand) specifically for χάραγμα to distinguish it from σημεῖον (“sign,” a revelatory/miraculous symbol, e.g. 12:1, 3; 13:13-14; 15:1), which should be rendered চিহ্ন or অলৌকিক চিহ্ন. Using the same Bengali word (চিহ্ন) for both χάραγμα and σημεῖον would blur an important distinction the Greek text itself maintains; establish this distinction explicitly in translation memory before Phase 2 begins. |
| the number of the beast (666) | ὁ ἀριθμὸς τοῦ θηρίου, χξϛ | the number of the beast, 666 | ”the number of the beast,” “666” | Symbolic (likely gematria-based) designation, not a literal barcode or ID number to be feared as such — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | পশুর সংখ্যা, ৬৬৬ / 666. Risk: High — Bengali folk culture (both Hindu numerology/জ্যোতিষ-সংখ্যাতত্ত্ব and folk-Islamic amulet/ilm-e-adad number-magic traditions) has a strong existing numerology practice; teaching materials must guard against readers treating 666 (or 144,000, or 1,260 days, or 42 months) as a literal magic number to be feared/avoided superstitiously, rather than as a theological symbol pointing to imperfect, beast-like power falling short of God’s completeness (7). |
| worship (of the beast) | προσκυνέω / proskyneō | to bow down, prostrate, worship | ”worship” | The false worship demanded by and given to the beast, the direct dark mirror of the true Worship of the Lamb | See CRITICAL উপাসনা/পূজা entry below (Ch.19 section) — same term, opposite object; render identically as উপাসনা করা with the object of worship always specified from context (ঈশ্বর/মেষশিশু vs. পশু), since Bengali উপাসনা করা does not itself distinguish true from false worship — only the stated object does. |
Chapter 14 — The 144,000, the Eternal Gospel, and the Harvest
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| eternal gospel | εὐαγγέλιον αἰώνιον | eternal/everlasting good news | ”the eternal gospel,” “an everlasting gospel” | The one, unchanging gospel proclaimed to all nations — reuses সুসমাচার | অনন্ত সুসমাচার. সুসমাচার [BASELINE REUSE, High]. Risk: High (compound doctrine reinforcement — this is the same gospel of Romans 1:16, not a different end-times message). |
| ”Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord” | μακάριοι οἱ νεκροὶ οἱ ἐν κυρίῳ ἀποθνήσκοντες | blessed are the dead who die in the Lord | ”blessed are the dead who die in the Lord” | Assurance for those who die faithful under persecution — ties Perseverance to Assurance of Salvation | ধন্য সেই মৃতেরা যারা প্রভুতে মরে. প্রভু [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk: High. |
| harvest / grape harvest and winepress of God’s wrath | θερισμός, ληνὸς τοῦ θυμοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ | harvest, winepress of God’s wrath | ”the harvest,” “the winepress of the wrath of God” | Final judgment pictured as agricultural harvest and wine-treading — Judgment of the Wicked | শস্য কাটা, ঈশ্বরের ক্রোধের মদ কারখানা / আঙুর মাড়াইয়ের কল. ক্রোধ risk: High (cross-refer Ch.6 note). |
Chapter 15 — The Song of Moses and of the Lamb; The Seven Bowls
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| song of Moses and of the Lamb | ᾠδὴ Μωϋσέως…καὶ ᾠδὴ τοῦ ἀρνίου | the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb | ”the song of Moses…and the song of the Lamb” | Unites Exodus deliverance with the Lamb’s greater deliverance — continuity of salvation history, tied to Sovereignty of God over History | মোশির গান ও মেষশিশুর গান. মোশি [BASELINE REUSE proper name form], মেষশিশু [cross-refer Ch.4-5]. Risk: Medium. |
| bowls (of wrath) | φιάλαι / phialai | bowls, shallow cups | ”bowls,” “the seven bowls of God’s wrath” | Final, complete series of judgments — Judgment of the Wicked | বাটি / পাত্র. Risk: Low. |
| temple filled with smoke from God’s glory | ὁ ναὸς ἐκαπνίσθη ἐκ τῆς δόξης τοῦ θεοῦ | the temple was filled with smoke from God’s glory | ”the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God” | God’s overwhelming presence, echoing Isaiah 6 and 1 Kings 8 — reuses মহিমা (glory, Romans baseline, High risk) and ναός (temple, see Critical note Ch.21) | মন্দির ঈশ্বরের মহিমার ধোঁয়ায় পূর্ণ হলো. মহিমা [BASELINE REUSE, High]. |
Chapter 16 — The Seven Bowls Poured Out
No significant new theological terms beyond those already catalogued (ক্রোধ/wrath, বাটি/bowls, শয়তান/দিয়াবল). Armageddon (Ἁρμαγεδών) is introduced here as a proper name:
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| Armageddon | Ἁρμαγεδών / Harmagedōn | place name (likely Hebrew Har Megiddo, “mountain of Megiddo”) | “Armageddon” | Symbolic staging-ground for the final confrontation between God and evil, not necessarily a literal single battlefield to be geographically anticipated — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | হার্মাগিদোন. Risk: Low-Medium (guard against literalist geo-political fixation in teaching material, consistent with the doctrine’s symbolic-reading mandate). |
Chapter 17 — The Great Prostitute and the Beast
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| Babylon the Great | Βαβυλὼν ἡ μεγάλη | Babylon the Great | ”Babylon the Great,” “Babylon” | Symbolic name for the world’s idolatrous, seductive, oppressive systems allied against God’s people — not literal ancient/modern Iraq | মহান ব্যাবিলন. Risk: High — a translator note is essential clarifying the symbolic referent, since Bengali readers with limited OT/ANE historical literacy may otherwise treat this as a puzzling geography lesson rather than grasping the symbolic critique of worldly power-systems, per Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation. |
| the great prostitute | ἡ πόρνη ἡ μεγάλη | the great prostitute/harlot | ”the great prostitute,” “the great harlot” | Personification of systemic idolatry and unfaithfulness — same πόρνη root as πόρνοις in 21:8 | মহাবেশ্যা / মহাগণিকা. Risk: Medium-High — sensitive imagery requiring careful, non-gratuitous handling in teaching contexts; frame as systemic/symbolic (an empire’s idolatrous seduction of the nations), not as commentary on any individual or group of women. |
| mystery | μυστήριον / mystērion | mystery, hidden meaning now disclosed | ”mystery,” “this calls for wisdom” | Explicit signal that the image requires symbolic, Spirit-given interpretation, not surface-literal reading — direct textual warrant for the Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation doctrine | নিগূঢ়তত্ত্ব / রহস্য. Risk: Medium. |
| seven heads, ten horns | ἑπτὰ κεφαλαί, δέκα κέρατα | seven heads, ten horns | ”seven heads and ten horns” | Symbolic representation of successive/composite worldly powers, not a literal physiology | সাত মাথা, দশ শিং. Risk: Medium (interpretive caution per Symbolic doctrine). |
Chapter 18 — The Fall of Babylon
No new theological-vocabulary terms beyond Babylon (already flagged), মহিমা/glory imagery is absent here but merchants’ mourning reuses standard vocabulary. One notable phrase:
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| ”Come out of her, my people” | Ἐξέλθατε ἐξ αὐτῆς, ὁ λαός μου | come out of her, my people | ”Come out of her, my people” | Call to separation from complicity in idolatrous, oppressive systems — practical outworking of Perseverance and Faithful Witness | তার মধ্য থেকে বেরিয়ে আসো, আমার প্রজাগণ. Risk: Medium (pastoral application care — avoid implying literal geographic relocation rather than moral/spiritual separation). |
Chapter 19 — The Marriage Supper of the Lamb and the Rider on the White Horse
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| Hallelujah | Ἁλληλουϊά | ”Praise the LORD” (Hebrew) | “Hallelujah,” “Alleluia” | Climactic worship exclamation | হাল্লিলূয়া — [BASELINE REUSE, established form]. |
| marriage supper of the Lamb | ὁ γάμος τοῦ ἀρνίου | the wedding/marriage of the Lamb | ”the marriage of the Lamb,” “the wedding supper of the Lamb” | Consummation of the Church as Bride of Christ doctrine, paralleling 21:2, 9 | মেষশিশুর বিবাহ-ভোজ. Risk: High — cross-refer বধূ/bride note at 21:2; same cultural-ritual sensitivity around Bengali wedding customs applies. |
| righteous deeds (of the saints) | δικαιώματα / dikaiōmata | righteous acts, righteous deeds | ”the righteous deeds of the saints” | The bride’s “fine linen” is explicitly identified as the righteous deeds of the saints — the shares the ধার্মিকতা root (righteousness, Romans baseline, Critical) but here in the plural, concrete “acts” sense; must not be read as self-earned merit contradicting justification by faith, but as the fruit/outworking of a righteousness already given | পবিত্র লোকদের ধার্মিক কাজ. ধার্মিক shares the [BASELINE REUSE, Critical] root. Risk: Critical — must be carefully distinguished from ধার্মিকতা (justifying righteousness received by faith) to avoid implying salvation-by-works; recommend translator note explicitly linking this to Romans’ grace-not-merit framework. |
| Faithful and True | πιστὸς καὶ ἀληθινός | faithful and true | ”Faithful and True” | Christ’s title as the rider on the white horse — must be rendered identically to 21:5 (consistency rule) | বিশ্বস্ত ও সত্য — cross-refer 21:5. |
| Word of God | ὁ Λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ | the Word of God | ”the Word of God” | Christ’s identity as God’s self-revealing Word, echoing John 1:1 — ties to Deity of Christ | ঈশ্বরের বচন. Risk: High — should ideally be cross-checked against any established Bengali Bible rendering of John 1:1’s ὁ Λόγος (commonly বচন or বাক্য) for terminological consistency if/when a Gospel-of-John curriculum is produced under this same Language Package. |
| King of kings and Lord of lords | βασιλεὺς βασιλέων καὶ κύριος κυρίων | king of kings and lord of lords | ”King of kings and Lord of lords” | Climactic, unqualified assertion of Christ’s supreme sovereignty — direct extension of the Romans baseline’s Critical-risk প্রভু (Lord) term to its fullest apocalyptic expression | রাজাদের রাজা ও প্রভুদের প্রভু. প্রভু [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk: CRITICAL — this is the single most climactic Lordship title in the whole book (also echoed at 17:14); must never be rendered as a title shared among comparable religious/political figures; route to human theologian review at every occurrence. |
| worship (of God, refused of the angel) | προσκυνέω | see full treatment below | — | An angel explicitly refuses worship and redirects it to God alone (19:10; 22:9) — the clearest possible textual statement that only God/the Lamb may receive proskyneō | উপাসনা করা. Risk: CRITICAL. See consolidated entry below. |
Consolidated CRITICAL note — Worship (προσκυνέω): This single Greek verb governs both the true worship of God/the Lamb (4:10; 5:14; 7:11; 11:16; 19:4, 10; 22:9) and the false worship of the dragon/beast/image (13:4, 8, 12, 15; 14:9, 11) throughout Revelation — the book’s central ethical choice is precisely “whom will you προσκυνέω?” The Bengali verb পূজা করা must never be used for this term in either direction, because পূজা is the specific, ritually loaded Bengali word for Hindu deity/idol worship (Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Lakshmi Puja, home-shrine murti worship) — using it even for the false worship of the beast risks readers hearing an implicit equation between that condemned act and their neighbors’ (or, for Hindu-background readers themselves, their own family’s) actual religious practice, which is pastorally explosive. The established Bengali Christian term উপাসনা করা should be used consistently for προσκυνέω in every occurrence, with the object of worship (ঈশ্বর/মেষশিশু for true worship; পশু/প্রতিমা for false worship) always made grammatically explicit, since the verb itself does not encode the moral valence — only its stated object does. Every occurrence should be flagged for human theologian review given its doctrinal centrality to Worship of the Lamb.
Chapter 20 — The Thousand Years, Satan Bound and Loosed, the Great White Throne
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| a thousand years | χίλια ἔτη | a thousand years | ”a thousand years,” “the millennium” | Symbolic (most likely) or intensively long period of Christ’s/the saints’ reign, subject to legitimate differences of interpretive school — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation requires the Bengali rendering to remain interpretively neutral | সহস্র বছর / হাজার বছর. Risk: Medium — render literally (a straightforward numeral phrase) without embedding any one millennial interpretive scheme (premillennial/amillennial/postmillennial) into the translation itself; interpretive commentary belongs in teaching notes, not in the base translation. |
| bound / abyss (of Satan) | δέω, ἄβυσσος | bind, the abyss | ”bound,” “thrown into the abyss” | Christ’s present sovereign restraint of Satan’s activity — Sovereignty of God over History | বাঁধা, অগাধ গহ্বর — cross-refer Ch.8-9 অগাধ গহ্বর entry (avoid পাতাল). |
| first resurrection | ἡ ἀνάστασις ἡ πρώτη | the first resurrection | ”the first resurrection” | Reuses পুনরুত্থান (Romans baseline, Critical) in a specific, debated sub-sense (resurrection to reign) — requires the same forbidden-substitution discipline as Romans (never পুনর্জন্ম) | প্রথম পুনরুত্থান. পুনরুত্থান [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk: Critical — never পুনর্জন্ম (reincarnation); this is a specific, debated technical phrase and should be flagged for theologian review regardless of one’s millennial position, since mistranslation here affects the whole Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints doctrine. |
| Gog and Magog | Γωγ καὶ Μαγώγ | proper names (from Ezekiel 38-39) | “Gog and Magog” | Symbolic representation of the final, doomed assault of all hostile nations against God’s people — requires OT (Ezekiel) background | গোগ ও মাগোগ. Risk: Low-Medium (OT literacy prerequisite, same pattern as দায়ূদের বংশ). |
| great white throne | θρόνος λευκὸς μέγας | a great white throne | ”the great white throne” | The final, universal judgment scene — climax of Judgment of the Wicked and Vindication of the Saints | শ্বেত মহাসিংহাসন. Risk: High — শুভ্র/শ্বেত (white) here signals purity/holiness of the judgment, distinct from (though not contradicting) the earlier white-robe cultural-sensitivity note; the throne imagery itself (সিংহাসন) carries the general Medium risk flagged in Ch.4-5. |
| book of life | βιβλίον τῆς ζωῆς | see 3:5; 21:27 | — | Final judgment is measured against this record — Judgment/Vindication and Assurance of Salvation converge | জীবন পুস্তক — cross-refer Ch.2-3 entry; render identically at every occurrence (3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12, 15; 21:27). |
| lake of fire | λίμνη τοῦ πυρός | see 21:8 | — | — | আগুনের হ্রদ — cross-refer 21:8 entry; render identically at 19:20; 20:10, 14-15; 21:8. |
| second death | δεύτερος θάνατος | see 21:8 | — | — | দ্বিতীয় মৃত্যু — cross-refer 21:8 entry; render identically at 2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8. |
| Death and Hades | ὁ θάνατος καὶ ὁ ᾍδης | Death and Hades (personified) | “Death and Hades” | Personified powers finally cast into the lake of fire — their own defeat is part of God’s total victory | মৃত্যু ও পাতাল. Risk: High — cross-refer Ch.1 পাতাল/Hades note; while পাতাল has some precedent in Bengali Bible tradition as a rendering for Hades/Sheol, its Puranic-cosmological associations (a nether-realm inhabited by Nagas) mean a clarifying note is still advisable, distinguishing biblical Hades (the realm/power of death, itself finally destroyed) from the Puranic Patala (a permanent cosmological region). Consider the alternative মৃত্যুলোক (“realm of death”) as a lower-collision option if a house-style decision is made in Phase 2. |
Chapter 21 (verses 9-27) — The New Jerusalem Described
(Verses 1-8 are the core passage, fully treated in Part 1 above.)
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| twelve gates, twelve foundations, names of the twelve tribes/apostles | δώδεκα πύλαι, δώδεκα θεμέλιοι | twelve gates, twelve foundations | ”twelve gates,” “twelve foundations” | Symbolic union of OT covenant people (12 tribes) and NT apostolic foundation — continuity of the one people of God, ties Unity of Jews and Gentiles (Romans baseline doctrine) forward into the consummation | বারো দরজা, বারো ভিত্তিমূল. Risk: Medium. |
| the city’s measurements (a cube of gold) | ἐμέτρησεν τὴν πόλιν | he measured the city | ”he measured the city” | Symbolic perfection (cubic form, echoing the Holy of Holies) rather than a literal architectural blueprint — Symbolic and Apocalyptic Interpretation | নগরটি পরিমাপ করলেন. Risk: Medium (interpretive caution). |
| no temple — God and the Lamb are its temple | ναὸν οὐκ εἶδον ἐν αὐτῇ…ὁ γὰρ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὁ παντοκράτωρ ναὸς αὐτῆς ἐστίν, καὶ τὸ ἀρνίον | I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple | ”I did not see a temple in the city, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple” | The consummation transcends even the temple/sanctuary system — direct, unmediated presence replaces every previous structure of mediated access, the ultimate statement of Sovereignty of God over History’s goal | আমি তার মধ্যে কোনো মন্দির দেখলাম না, কারণ সর্বশক্তিমান প্রভু ঈশ্বর ও মেষশিশুই তার মন্দির. Risk: CRITICAL. মন্দির (temple) is the identical, everyday Bengali word for a Hindu temple housing a deity’s murti/image — the most common referent a Bengali reader will supply when this word is encountered. In most other biblical contexts (the literal Jerusalem Temple, e.g. Matthew 21:12) মন্দির is the necessary, established Bengali Bible rendering with no good substitute; but here the text’s entire theological point is the absence of any structure, and its replacement by the immediate presence of God and the Lamb themselves. A flattened rendering risks readers picturing God and the Lamb as functioning like an installed murti inside a শূন্য মন্দির (empty temple building) rather than grasping that God’s own unmediated presence replaces the category of temple altogether. Mandatory mitigation: pair the verse with a clear teaching note explaining that “God and the Lamb being the temple” means direct, unmediated divine presence has replaced every previous physical sanctuary and its imagery — the opposite of, not an example of, an idol-housing structure. Route to human theologian review. |
| the glory of God as its light | ἡ δόξα τοῦ θεοῦ φωτίζει αὐτήν | the glory of God illuminates it | ”the glory of God gives it light” | Reuses মহিমা (glory, Romans baseline, High) — God’s own radiant presence supersedes even the sun/moon | ঈশ্বরের মহিমা তাকে আলোকিত করে. মহিমা [BASELINE REUSE, High]. |
| nothing unclean shall enter | οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτὴν πᾶν κοινόν | nothing common/unclean will enter it | ”nothing unclean will ever enter it” | Moral, not ritual, purity requirement for final entry — reuses পবিত্র family of terms by contrast | কোনো অশুচি বস্তু তার মধ্যে প্রবেশ করবে না. Risk: Medium — অশুচি (“unclean”) should be used carefully here in its moral sense, distinct from ritual-purity connotations flagged elsewhere (cf. Romans baseline sin/holy notes distinguishing moral transgression from ritual impurity); the text’s point is moral, not caste/ritual, exclusion. |
Chapter 22 — The River of Life, the Tree of Life, and the Epilogue
| Term | Original/Translit | Literal/Semantic Range | English Variants | Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|
| river of the water of life | ποταμὸς ὕδατος ζωῆς | river of the water of life | ”the river of the water of life” | Consummated Edenic/eschatological life-source, reuses জীবন জল (cross-refer 21:6) | জীবন জলের নদী. Risk: High — render consistently with 21:6, 17. |
| tree of life (healing the nations) | ξύλον τῆς ζωῆς…εἰς θεραπείαν τῶν ἐθνῶν | tree of life…for the healing of the nations | ”the tree of life,” “for the healing of the nations” | Restoration exceeding Eden — universal, international scope of final blessing, ties Universal Scope of the Gospel forward | জীবন বৃক্ষ…জাতিগণের আরোগ্যের জন্য. জাতিগণ relates to পরজাতি [BASELINE REUSE pattern, Medium]. Risk: Medium-High. |
| no more curse | οὐκ ἔσται…πᾶν κατάθεμα | there will no longer be any curse | ”there will no longer be any curse” | Reversal of the Genesis 3 curse — direct bookend to the whole Bible’s storyline, ties New Heaven and New Earth | আর কোনো অভিশাপ থাকবে না. Risk: Medium. |
| throne of God and of the Lamb | ὁ θρόνος τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἀρνίου | the throne of God and of the Lamb | ”the throne of God and of the Lamb” | A single, shared throne for God and the Lamb — asserts the Lamb’s full co-equal deity and rule, extending Deity of Christ and Return and Reign of Christ to their fullest expression | ঈশ্বরের ও মেষশিশুর সিংহাসন. Risk: High — the singular “throne” (not “thrones”) shared by God and the Lamb is a deliberate grammatical assertion of co-equal deity that should not be smoothed into two separate thrones in translation. |
| his servants will worship him… and they will reign forever | οἱ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ…προσκυνήσουσιν αὐτῷ…βασιλεύσουσιν εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων | his servants will worship/serve him…they will reign forever and ever | ”his servants will worship him…and they will reign forever and ever” | Final destiny of the redeemed: worship and shared reign — reuses উপাসনা করা (see Critical note Ch.19) and রাজত্ব করা (reign) | তাঁর দাসেরা তাঁর উপাসনা করবে…তারা অনন্তকাল রাজত্ব করবে. Risk: High — reuses উপাসনা করা [Critical, see Ch.19]; রাজত্ব করা risk High (Return and Reign of Christ, must convey shared, granted royal dignity, not a rival or independent sovereignty). |
| no need of sun or lamp, for the Lord God will be their light | οὐκ ἔχουσιν χρείαν φωτὸς λύχνου καὶ φωτὸς ἡλίου, ὅτι κύριος ὁ θεὸς φωτίσει ἐπ’ αὐτούς | they have no need of the light of a lamp or of the sun, for the Lord God will illumine them | ”they will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light” | Reprise of 21:23 — God’s direct radiance is the final, sufficient light source | তাদের বাতির আলো বা সূর্যের আলোর প্রয়োজন নেই, কারণ প্রভু ঈশ্বর তাদের আলো দেবেন. প্রভু [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk: Medium. |
| these words are trustworthy and true | οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι πιστοὶ καὶ ἀληθινοί | these words are faithful and true | ”these words are trustworthy and true” | Verbal echo of 21:5, bookending the whole New Jerusalem vision and the entire book | এই বচনগুলো বিশ্বস্ত ও সত্য — cross-refer 21:5, must render identically. |
| I am coming soon | ἔρχομαι ταχύ | I am coming quickly/soon | ”I am coming soon,” “Surely I am coming soon” | Repeated (22:7, 12, 20) climactic promise of Christ’s imminent, certain return — the direct textual anchor of Return and Reign of Christ | আমি শীঘ্রই আসছি. Risk: High — must be rendered identically at every occurrence for consistency, and never softened or hedged; the certainty and imminence of the promise (however long “soon” proves in human history) must be preserved without qualification, per the Requirements doc’s rule against minimizing doctrinal statements. |
| Come, Lord Jesus | Ἀμήν, ἔρχου, κύριε Ἰησοῦ | Amen, come, Lord Jesus | ”Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” | The Church’s own answering prayer of longing — the book’s climactic liturgical response, combining আমেন, প্রভু, and যীশু | আমেন। প্রভু যীশু, আসুন। — আমেন, প্রভু, যীশু all [BASELINE REUSE, Critical]. Risk: High (doctrine-level; this is arguably the single most important devotional sentence in the entire book and should be treated with the same “verbatim consistency across all documents” rule the baseline applies to Romans 10:9-10). |
| warning against adding to or taking away from the words of this prophecy | ἐάν τις ἐπιθῇ ἐπ’ αὐτά… ἐάν τις ἀφέλῃ ἀπὸ τῶν λόγων | if anyone adds to them…if anyone takes away from the words | ”if anyone adds to them…if anyone takes away from the words of this prophecy” | Canonical-closure warning specific to Revelation, protecting the integrity of this particular apocalyptic prophecy — reinforces Inspiration of Scripture (Romans baseline doctrine) applied to this book specifically | যদি কেউ এই সবের সাথে কিছু যোগ করে…যদি কেউ এই ভাববাণীর বচন থেকে কিছু বাদ দেয়. ভাববাণী [BASELINE REUSE, Low] — but doctrinal weight here is High given the canonical-closure function of this specific warning. |
| grace be with all | ἡ χάρις…μετὰ πάντων | the grace…be with all | ”the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all” | Closing benediction, reuses অনুগ্রহ | প্রভু যীশুর অনুগ্রহ সকলের সাথে থাকুক. অনুগ্রহ, প্রভু, যীশু [all BASELINE REUSE, High/Critical]. |
Summary of Full-Book Coverage
