Core Glossary
Core Glossary: Zephaniah (English → Bengali)
Curriculum: Zephaniah
Core passage: Zephaniah 3:14–17
Companion document: 07_semantic_analysis.md
Governing authority: translation_memory.json (baseline, Romans). Every term below marked REUSED FROM BASELINE must use the EXACT Bengali rendering already recorded there. New terms proposed here extend, and never contradict, that baseline.
Section A — Terms Reused from Baseline Romans Package (Exact Reuse Required)
| English term | Bengali rendering | Risk | Doctrine link in Zephaniah | First occurrence | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| God | ঈশ্বর | Critical | All doctrines (general divine reference, Elohim) | 1:1 | Baseline god. Distinct from সদাপ্রভু (YHWH proper name) — see Section B. |
| righteousness | ধার্মিকতা | Critical | Judgment on Idolatry/Complacency; Remnant of Israel | 2:3 | Baseline righteousness. NEVER ধর্ম. Paired directly with humility in 2:3 (“seek righteousness, seek humility”). |
| righteous (adj.) | ধার্মিক | Critical | Contrast of YHWH’s character with corrupt leaders | 3:5 | Baseline root reused adjectivally; “সদাপ্রভু তার মধ্যে ধার্মিক।“ |
| law | ব্যবস্থা | High | Judgment on corrupt priesthood | 3:4 | Baseline law. NEVER ধর্ম or শরিয়ত. |
| prophet(s) | ভাববাদী | Low (High in this context) | Judgment on corrupt leadership | 3:4 | Baseline prophet. Risk elevated here because the office-holders, not the office, are condemned — context-flag required so the office-term itself is not misread as redefined. |
| faith / believe / trust (general concept, cross-referenced) | বিশ্বাস | High | Conceptually adjacent to remnant’s refuge-seeking (3:12) | (cross-reference only) | Baseline faith. NOT used as the direct rendering of חסה (“take refuge”) in 3:12 — see আশ্রয় in Section B — but the conceptual link should be taught alongside it. |
| gentiles / nations (conceptual cross-reference) | পরজাতি (cross-ref only) | Medium | Judgment/restoration of the nations (ch.2, 3:9-10) | (cross-reference only) | Baseline gentiles is fixed for the NT Jew/Gentile ecclesiological contrast. Zephaniah’s גּוֹיִם/nations are rendered জাতি/জাতিসমূহ (Section B) as the primary term for this OT context; পরজাতি may be referenced in teaching notes for conceptual continuity only. |
Section B — New Terms for Zephaniah (Proposed Additions to Translation Memory)
B.1 — The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
| English term | Hebrew (translit.) | Bengali rendering | Risk | First occurrence | Alternatives rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YHWH (the divine covenant name) | יהוה (YHWH) | সদাপ্রভু | Critical | 1:1 | প্রভু (reserved for κύριος/NT Lordship confession per baseline); ঈশ্বর (too generic, = Elohim); যিহোवा (associated with Jehovah’s Witness translation tradition in Bengali, avoid) | Established Bengali OT convention (Bangladesh Bible Society / Bible Society of India). Must be used for every occurrence of יהוה in Zephaniah — nearly every verse. Never flattened into প্রভু or ঈশ্বর. |
| Day of the LORD | יוֹם יְהוָה (yom YHWH) | সদাপ্রভুর দিন | Critical | 1:7 | সেই মহাদিন (loses the direct name-link) | The book’s central eschatological term; render identically at every occurrence (1:7,8,9,10,14×2,18; echoed at 3:16 “সেই দিনে”). Encodes BOTH judgment (ch.1) and restoration (ch.3) — a single Day, not two events. |
| that day (eschatological formula) | בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא (bayom hahu) | সেই দিনে | High | 1:9 (judgment sense); 3:16 (restoration sense) | — | Deliberate structural echo between judgment and restoration senses; translator note recommended. |
| wrath (of God) | חָרוֹן, עֶבְרָה, זַעַם | ক্রোধ (vary near-synonyms: প্রচণ্ড রোষ, উত্তপ্ত ক্রোধ) | High | 1:15, 18; 3:8 | মৃদু অসন্তোष (too weak) | Real, weighty, personal divine response to sin; do not soften. Preserve the rhetorical stacking of near-synonyms in 1:14-16. |
| mighty one / warrior (of God) | גִּבּוֹר (gibbor) | পরাক্রমী | High | 3:17 | বীর (“hero/warrior” — rejected for evoking Bengali epic/mythic warrior-hero and regional warrior-deity associations) | Divine warrior imagery fighting FOR, not against, God’s people in the restoration context. |
| save / deliver | יָשַׁע (root ישע) | রক্ষা করা / উদ্ধার করা | Critical | 1:18; 3:17,19 | মুক্তি, মোক্ষ (forbidden per baseline salvation — rebirth-cycle liberation not in view); flat reuse of noun পরিত্রাণ (reserved for NT soteriological noun) | Same Hebrew root underlying NT σωτηρία/পরিত্রাণ; genuine root continuity, not homonymy. Concrete national deliverance here; translator note on the continuity to full NT salvation doctrine required. |
| restore fortunes / turn back captivity | שׁוּב שְׁבוּת (shuv shevut) | বন্দীদশা/অবস্থা ফিরিয়ে আনা | Medium | 3:20 | — | Fixed OT restoration idiom recurring elsewhere (Job, Jeremiah, Amos); harmonize with future OT curricula if possible. |
| shame turned to praise/renown | תְּהִלָּה וָשֵׁם (tehillah vashem) | লজ্জা প্রশংসা ও সুনামে পরিণত হওয়া | Medium | 3:19-20 | — | Public honor-reversal for the formerly shamed remnant; note high salience of honor/shame dynamics in Bengali culture (per baseline flag category). |
| gather the outcast/scattered | קִבֵּץ…הַנִּדָּחָה / בַּת־פּוּצַי | সংগ্রহ করা / বিক্ষিপ্তদের সংগ্রহ করা | Medium | 3:10, 18-19 | — | Regathering theme completing the restoration arc. |
B.2 — God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
| English term | Hebrew (translit.) | Bengali rendering | Risk | First occurrence | Alternatives rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baal | בַּעַל (Ba’al) | বাল | Critical | 1:4 | (retain proper name; do not translate root meaning “lord/master”) | Chief named rival deity; must remain unmistakably a foreign false god. |
| idolatry / idol-worship | (general concept) | প্রতিমাপূজা | High | 1:4-6 | — | MAJOR cultural collision point: প্রতিমা/মূর্তি puja is the standard Bengali name for the dominant Hindu religious practice of image-worship (e.g. দুর্গা প্রতিমা পূজা). Context must make clear these are specifically condemned false gods, not a neutral description of “a religion” — do not soften into comparative-religion language. |
| host of heaven (astral worship) | צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם (tseva ha-shamayim) | আকাশের বাহিনী | High | 1:5 | — | Star/astral-body worship, a specific named idolatrous practice. |
| Milcom | מַלְכָּם (Malkam) | মিল্কম | High | 1:5 | মালিক (would obscure the proper name via the root-meaning wordplay) | National god of Ammon; retained as proper name to preserve the syncretism charge (swearing by YHWH AND Milcom). |
| remnant of Baal (condemned sense) | שְׁאָר הַבַּעַל (she’ar ha-Ba’al) | বালের অবশিষ্ট অংশ | High | 1:4 | — | Context-sensitive: same root as positive “remnant of Israel” below — MUST be distinguished by context, not vocabulary substitution; translator note required. |
| idolatrous priests | כְּמָרִים (kemarim) | প্রতিমা-পুরোহিত | Medium-High | 1:4 | — | Specific term for pagan cultic officiants, distinct from generic পুরোহিত. |
| priests (Israelite office) | כֹּהֲנִים (kohanim) | পুরোহিত | Medium | 1:4; 3:4 | — | Established Bengali rendering, but also the standard word for a Hindu ritual priest/Brahmin; context must clarify this is the divinely instituted covenant office. |
| complacency (“settled on the dregs”) | הַקֹּפְאִים עַל־שִׁמְרֵיהֶם | আত্মতৃপ্ত / নিশ্চিন্ত | High | 1:12 | (wine-lees idiom does not transfer; do not attempt literal calque) | Passive, settled skepticism about God’s active providence — distinct from active idol-worship; a second, subtler face of the judgment doctrine. |
| jealousy (of God) | קִנְאָה (kin’ah) | ঈর্ষা / অন্তর্জ্বালা | High | 1:18; 3:8 | সাধারণ হিংসা (petty envy — must be distinguished) | Righteous covenant zeal for exclusive loyalty; translator note distinguishing from vice-sense envy required. |
| pride / haughtiness | גַּאֲוָה, גֵּאוּת (ga’avah, ge’ut) | গর্ব / অহংকার | Medium-High | 2:10; 3:11 | — | Direct antonym of humility doctrine; named repeatedly as the specific sin bringing judgment. |
| self-deification claim (“I am, there is none besides me”) | אֲנִי וְאֶפְסִי עוֹד | ”আমিই আছি, আমার কেউ নেই” | High | 2:15 | — | Deliberate parody of divine self-declaration formulas (cf. Isa 45:5); flag the intertextual echo in teaching notes. |
| violence to the law | חָמְסוּ תוֹרָה (chamesu Torah) | ব্যবস্থার প্রতি সহিংসতা | High | 3:4 | — | ব্যবস্থা reused exactly from baseline; সহিংসতা (violence) is new but low-risk supporting vocabulary. |
| profane the sanctuary | חִלְּלוּ־קֹדֶשׁ (chillelu-kodesh) | পবিত্রস্থান অপবিত্র করা | Medium-High | 3:4 | — | পবিত্র root reused from baseline holy; পবিত্রস্থান (sanctuary) and অপবিত্র (defile/profane) are new supporting terms. |
B.3 — The Remnant of Israel
| English term | Hebrew (translit.) | Bengali rendering | Risk | First occurrence | Alternatives rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| remnant of my people (positive) | שְׁאָר עַמִּי / יֶתֶר גּוֹיִי | আমার প্রজাদের/জাতির অবশিষ্ট অংশ | Critical | 2:9 | — | First explicit POSITIVE remnant statement in the book, directly contrasting 1:4’s condemned “remnant of Baal.” |
| remnant of Israel (named doctrine) | שְׁאֵרִית יִשְׂרָאֵל (she’erit Yisra’el) | ইস্রায়েলের অবশিষ্ট অংশ | Critical | 3:13 | — | The book’s definitive named doctrinal term; render identically wherever it recurs across teaching materials. |
| humble/afflicted of the land | עַנְוֵי הָאָרֶץ (anvei ha-arets) | দেশের নম্র লোকেরা | High | 2:3 | — | Seedbed of the remnant doctrine — humility, not power or status, marks those preserved. |
| humble and lowly people (definitional) | עַם עָנִי וָדָל (am ani vadal) | দীন ও নম্র লোক | Critical | 3:12 | — | The doctrine’s definitional statement: the remnant is DEFINED by humility, not ethnicity or status alone. |
| humility (virtue) | עֲנָוָה (anavah) | নম্রতা | High | 2:3 | — | Paired directly with ধার্মিকতা (righteousness, reused from baseline) in 2:3’s call. |
| take refuge in YHWH’s name | חָסוּ בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה (chasu beshem YHWH) | সদাপ্রভুর নামে আশ্রয় নেওয়া | High | 3:12 | flat substitution of বিশ্বাস (a lexically distinct root, ideas are adjacent but not identical) | Characteristic posture of the preserved remnant. |
| removal of the proud/haughty (purification of the remnant) | גֵּאֵי גַּבְהֵךְ (ge’ei govhekh) | অহংকারী/গর্বিত লোকদের দূর করা | High | 3:11 | — | The remnant that remains is defined by the REMOVAL of pride — purification, not mere survival. |
| daughter of my dispersed ones | בַּת־פּוּצַי (bat-putsai) | আমার বিক্ষিপ্ত লোকদের কন্যা | Medium | 3:10 | — | Diaspora worshippers included in the regathering. |
B.4 — God’s Joyful Love for His People (core passage doctrine)
| English term | Hebrew (translit.) | Bengali rendering | Risk | First occurrence | Alternatives rejected | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| daughter of Zion | בַת־צִיּוֹן (bat-Tsiyon) | সিয়োন-কন্যা | Medium | 3:14 | plain সিয়োন alone (loses personification) | Poetic personification of the covenant people; retain the address form. |
| Zion (proper name) | צִיּוֹן (Tsiyon) | সিয়োন | Medium | 3:14 | — | Established Bengali Bible proper name. |
| Jerusalem (proper name) | יְרוּשָׁלִַם (Yerushalayim) | যিরূশালেম | Low | 3:14 | — | Established Bengali Bible spelling. |
| King of Israel (title for YHWH) | מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל (Melekh Yisra’el) | ইস্রায়েলের রাজা | High | 3:15 | — | Divine kingship claimed for YHWH himself, not a human Davidic king; foundational trajectory for (but not identical to) later NT Christological kingship claims — do not import a premature Christological reading into the OT referent. |
| rejoice / exult (joy-verb cluster: רנן, רוע, שיש, עלז, גיל, רנה) | see individual roots in 07_semantic_analysis.md | আনন্দ করা, উল্লাস করা, জয়ধ্বনি করা, জয়গান করা (vary to preserve poetic stacking) | Medium-High | 3:14, 17 | repeating a single Bengali word for all instances (flattens the deliberate poetic intensification) | Note the SAME root (עלז/উল্লাস) is used positively of Zion (3:14,17) and negatively of Nineveh’s doomed revelry (2:15) — context, not vocabulary, carries the moral distinction; a visible echo across these passages is desirable in teaching materials. |
| love (of God for his people) | אַהֲבָה (ahavah) | ভালোবাসা | High | 3:17 | প্রেম (rejected — heavily associated with romantic/passionate love in Bengali popular culture and film; ভালোবাসা is the established Bengali Bible term for God’s covenantal love, e.g. John 3:16) | Core term for the doctrine “God’s Joyful Love for His People.” |
| he will be still/quiet in his love | יַחֲרִישׁ בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ (yacharish be’ahavato) | তিনি তাঁর ভালোবাসায় প্রশান্ত/নীরব থাকবেন | High | 3:17 | ”renew you in his love” (LXX-based variant reading — record as a footnoted alternative only, do not adopt as base rendering) | MT/LXX textual variant; MT (“be still/quiet,” settled contentment) is the base text for Bengali OT tradition. |
| fear not / do not fear | אַל־תִּירְאִי (al-tir’i) | ভয় করো না | Low | 3:16 | — | Standard salvation-oracle comfort formula. |
| hands not slack (idiom for discouragement) | אַל־יִרְפּוּ יָדָיִךְ | তোমার হাত শিথিল/দুর্বল না হোক | Low-Medium | 3:16 | — | Idiom of exhausted discouragement; convey the underlying sense (do not lose heart) alongside the retained image if natural. |
| pure speech/lips | שָׂפָה בְרוּרָה (safah berurah) | বিশুদ্ধ ভাষা | Medium-High | 3:9 | — | Universal-scope promise: restored worship-speech given to the NATIONS, not Israel alone. |
| serve with one accord (“one shoulder”) | שֶׁכֶם אֶחָד (shekhem echad) | একচিত্তে/একসঙ্গে সেবা করা | Medium | 3:9 | — | Idiom for united cooperative worship among formerly divided nations. |

Governing instruction for Phase 2: All Critical and High risk terms above must be added to an updated translation_memory.json (version incremented) before any Zephaniah segment translation begins, per the enforcement procedure specified in 12_ai_translation_requirements.md. The Critical distinction between সদাপ্রভু (YHWH, the OT proper name) and প্রভু (κύριος, the NT Lordship title already fixed in the baseline) is the single most consequential new rule this package adds and must be flagged prominently in any Phase 2 system prompt update.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বর
Transliteration: Ishshor
Doctrine: Divine Name and Covenant Lordship
Rejected alternatives: ভগবান, আল্লাহ
Original: אֱלֹהִים
Category: God
Inherited from Romans package exactly. Generic term for God/Elohim. In Zephaniah, must remain distinct from and never collapsed into সদাপ্রভু (the covenant proper name יהוה, see yhwh entry below).
Righteousness
Approved rendering: ধার্মিকতা
Transliteration: dharmikota
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel; God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Rejected alternatives: ধর্ম, পুণ্য, ন্যায়
Original: צֶדֶק / צְדָקָה
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package exactly. NEVER ধর্ম. In Zephaniah 2:3, paired directly with নম্রতা (humility) as the twin marks of those who may be sheltered in সদাপ্রভুর দিন.
Lord
Approved rendering: প্রভু
Transliteration: provu
Doctrine: Divine Name and Covenant Lordship
Rejected alternatives: মালিক, ঈশ্বর
Inherited from Romans package exactly, reserved for κύριος/NT Lordship confession (e.g. যীশু প্রভু, Romans 10:9). CRITICAL: NEVER use for יהוה in Zephaniah — see yhwh entry below. The OT/NT proper-name-versus-title distinction is the single highest-priority enforcement rule this package adds.
Salvation
Approved rendering: পরিত্রাণ
Transliteration: poritran
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration (conceptual cross-reference only)
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, নাজাত
Inherited from Romans package exactly, reserved for the NT soteriological noun. NEVER used as the rendering for Zephaniah’s concrete verb ישע (‘save/deliver’) — see save_deliver below, which uses রক্ষা করা/উদ্ধার করা instead. Root continuity, not identical scope, connects the two.
Yhwh
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভু
Transliteration: Shodaprobhu
Doctrine: Divine Name and Covenant Lordship
Rejected alternatives: প্রভু (reserved for NT κύριος/Christ’s Lordship), ঈশ্বর (too generic, = Elohim), যিহোভা (Jehovah’s Witness translation-tradition association, must be avoided)
Original: יהוה
Category: God
CRITICAL NEW TERM. Established Bengali OT convention (Bangladesh Bible Society/Bible Society of India) for the personal covenant name יהוה, used in nearly every verse of Zephaniah. Must be used for every occurrence of יהוה; never flattened into প্রভু or ঈশ্বর. This is the single most consequential new rule this package adds.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভুর দিন
Transliteration: Shodaprobhur din
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: সেই মহাদিন (loses the direct name-link), বিচারের দিন (imports the Islamic Yaum al-Qiyamah retributive-only idiom, losing the restoration half)
Original: יוֹם יְהוָה
Category: Eschatology
CRITICAL NEW TERM. The book’s central eschatological term; render identically at every occurrence (1:7,8,9,10,14 [x2],18; echoed at 3:16 as সেই দিনে). Encodes BOTH judgment (ch.1) and restoration (ch.3) as a single Day, not two events.
Baal
Approved rendering: বাল
Transliteration: Bal
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Rejected alternatives: (do not translate the root meaning ‘lord/master’)
Original: בַּעַל
Category: Idolatry
CRITICAL NEW TERM. Proper name of the Canaanite storm-and-fertility deity, YHWH’s chief rival, named in Zephaniah’s opening indictment (1:4). Must remain unmistakably a named foreign, false deity, never softened into a generic ‘master’ or confused with a legitimate title.
Righteous Character Of God
Approved rendering: ধার্মিক
Transliteration: dharmik
Doctrine: God’s Righteous Character Amid Human Corruption
Original: צַדִּיק
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL. Adjectival form of the baseline’s ধার্মিকতা root, describing YHWH’s own unwavering character (3:5) against corrupt human leadership just indicted. Must never drift toward ধর্ম’s everyday sense of ‘religion/religious identity.‘
Remnant Of My People
Approved rendering: আমার প্রজাদের অবশিষ্ট অংশ
Transliteration: amar projader oboshishto ongsho
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: שְׁאָר עַמִּי / יֶתֶר גּוֹיִי
Category: Remnant
CRITICAL NEW TERM. First explicit POSITIVE remnant statement in the book (2:9), directly contrasting 1:4’s condemned বালের অবশিষ্ট অংশ. Must be visibly distinguishable in context even though sharing the same root.
Remnant Of Israel
Approved rendering: ইস্রায়েলের অবশিষ্ট অংশ
Transliteration: Israeler oboshishto ongsho
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: שְׁאֵרִית יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: Remnant
CRITICAL NEW TERM — the book’s definitive named doctrinal phrase (3:13). Must be rendered identically at every occurrence across all teaching materials; inconsistent rendering would fracture the doctrine’s cross-passage identity.
Humble And Lowly People
Approved rendering: দীন ও নম্র লোক
Transliteration: din o nomro lok
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: עַם עָנִי וָדָל
Category: Remnant
CRITICAL NEW TERM. The definitional statement of the Remnant doctrine (3:12): the preserved remnant is identified by humility and lowliness, not ethnicity or status alone. Must be rendered identically wherever taught alongside ইস্রায়েলের অবশিষ্ট অংশ.
Save Deliver
Approved rendering: রক্ষা করা / উদ্ধার করা
Transliteration: rokkha kora / uddhar kora
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People; The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ (forbidden per baseline — rebirth-cycle liberation not in view), পরিত্রাণ (reserved for the NT soteriological noun — do not substitute here)
Original: יָשַׁע (root ישע)
Category: Salvation
CRITICAL. Concrete, historical deliverance of Zion (1:18; 3:17,19); same Hebrew root underlying NT σωτηρία/পরিত্রাণ. Genuine root continuity, not homonymy — a translator note on this continuity is required.
High Risk Terms
Law
Approved rendering: ব্যবস্থা
Transliteration: bebostha
Doctrine: Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Rejected alternatives: ধর্ম, শরিয়ত, নিয়ম
Original: תּוֹרָה
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package exactly. NEVER ধর্ম or শরিয়ত. In Zephaniah 3:4, the Torah entrusted to and violated by corrupt priests.
Faith
Approved rendering: বিশ্বাস
Transliteration: bishwas
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel (conceptual cross-reference only)
Rejected alternatives: ঈমান, শ্রদ্ধা
Inherited from Romans package exactly. NOT used as the direct rendering of חסה (‘take refuge’) in Zephaniah 3:12 — see take_refuge_in_yhwh_name below, a lexically distinct root. Referenced only for conceptual teaching continuity.
Holy
Approved rendering: পবিত্র
Transliteration: pobitro
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Rejected alternatives: শুচি, নির্মল
Inherited from Romans package exactly. Root reused in Zephaniah 3:4’s পবিত্রস্থান অপবিত্র করা (profane the sanctuary) — see profane_the_sanctuary below.
Word Of The Lord
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভুর বাক্য
Transliteration: Sodaproveur bakyo
Doctrine: Divine Name and Covenant Lordship; Inspiration of Scripture (cross-reference)
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বরের বাণী (too generic)
NEW. Zephaniah 1:1’s prophetic reception formula, establishing the book’s divine authority from the outset. Must use সদাপ্রভু (not ঈশ্বর or প্রভু) as the compounding element.
That Day
Approved rendering: সেই দিনে
Transliteration: Shei dine
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Original: בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא
Category: Eschatology
The eschatological formula ‘in that day,’ used in both judgment (1:9-10) and restoration (3:16) senses. Deliberate structural echo between the two senses must be preserved through consistent phrasing.
Wrath Of God
Approved rendering: ক্রোধ
Transliteration: krodh
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration; God’s Covenant Jealousy
Rejected alternatives: মৃদু অসন্তোষ (too weak)
Original: חָרוֹן / עֶבְרָה / זַעַם
Category: Judgment
Stacked Hebrew near-synonyms (חָרוֹן/עֶבְרָה/זַעַם), intensified in 1:14-18 and referenced again at 3:8. Render as ক্রোধ, varying with প্রচণ্ড রোষ/উত্তপ্ত ক্রোধ to preserve rhetorical stacking. Must remain a real, weighty, personal divine response to sin, not softened to mild displeasure.
Host Of Heaven
Approved rendering: আকাশের বাহিনী
Transliteration: akasher bahini
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Original: צְבָא הַשָּׁמַיִם
Category: Idolatry
The sun, moon, and stars worshiped as deities; astral cult condemned in 1:5. High risk because astral/star worship has surviving folk-astrological analogues (গণনা, জ্যোতিষ, রাশিফল) in Bengali culture; the term must be anchored to the specific ancient astral-cult practice condemned here, not read as a blanket condemnation of astronomy or modern astrology.
Milcom
Approved rendering: মিল্কম
Transliteration: Milkom
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Rejected alternatives: মালিক (‘their king’ reading — would obscure the proper name via root-meaning wordplay)
Original: מַלְכָּם
Category: Idolatry
National god of Ammon, named in the charge of dual-swearing loyalty (‘by YHWH and by Milcom,’ 1:5). Retained as a proper name to preserve the specific syncretism charge.
Remnant Of Baal
Approved rendering: বালের অবশিষ্ট অংশ
Transliteration: Baler oboshishto ongsho
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Original: שְׁאָר הַבַּעַל
Category: Idolatry
The doomed vestige of Baal-worship marked for destruction (1:4), sharing the SAME Bengali root (অবশিষ্ট অংশ) as the positive ‘remnant of Israel’ doctrine (2:9; 3:13). Context, not vocabulary substitution, must carry the distinction; a mandatory translator note is required at both occurrences.
Idolatrous Priests
Approved rendering: প্রতিমা-পুরোহিত
Transliteration: protima-purohit
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Original: כְּמָרִים
Category: Idolatry
Specific, always-negative term for pagan cultic priests (1:4), distinct from পুরোহিত alone (the Israelite priestly office). The compound with প্রতিমা keeps the negative, foreign-cult sense unambiguous.
Idolatry General
Approved rendering: প্রতিমাপূজা
Transliteration: protimapuja
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Original: (general concept underlying 1:4-6)
Category: Idolatry
MAJOR cultural collision point: প্রতিমাপূজা is also the standard Bengali name for mainstream, publicly celebrated Hindu image-worship (দুর্গাপূজা, কালীপূজা). Must always co-occur with named referents (বাল, আকাশের বাহিনী, মিল্কম) so the condemnation reads as historically specific, not a live comparative-religion judgment on a Bengali reader’s neighbors.
Complacency
Approved rendering: আত্মতৃপ্ত
Transliteration: attritripto
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Rejected alternatives: (literal wine-lees calque — unintelligible in Bengali)
Original: הַקֹּפְאִים עַל־שִׁמְרֵיהֶם
Category: Judgment
Lit. Hebrew idiom ‘those thickened upon their dregs’ (1:12); passive, settled skepticism about God’s active providence (‘The LORD will not do good, nor will he do ill’), distinct from active idol-worship — the doctrine’s subtler ‘second face.‘
Jealousy Of God
Approved rendering: ঈর্ষা
Transliteration: irsha
Doctrine: God’s Covenant Jealousy
Rejected alternatives: সাধারণ হিংসা (petty envy — must be distinguished)
Original: קִנְאָה
Category: God
God’s righteous covenant jealousy/zeal (1:18; 3:8). ঈর্ষা in ordinary Bengali usage denotes petty envy, a vice; a mandatory translator note distinguishing covenantal jealousy from human envy is required.
Self Deification Claim
Approved rendering: “আমিই আছি, আমার কেউ নেই”
Transliteration: “Amii achi, amar keu nei”
Doctrine: God’s Judgment on Idolatry and Complacency
Rejected alternatives: (loose paraphrase, e.g. ‘Nineveh was very proud’ — destroys the intertextual echo)
Original: אֲנִי וְאֶפְסִי עוֹד
Category: Idolatry
Nineveh’s boast (2:15), deliberately echoing/parodying divine self-declaration formulas (cf. Isaiah 45:5). Must be rendered near-literally enough that the parody is recognizable.
Violence To The Law
Approved rendering: ব্যবস্থার প্রতি সহিংসতা করা
Transliteration: bebosthar proti sohingshota kora
Doctrine: Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Original: חָמְסוּ תוֹרָה
Category: Covenant
The priests’ specific failure (3:4): doing violence to the Torah entrusted to them. ব্যবস্থা reused exactly from baseline; সহিংসতা করা is new, low-risk supporting vocabulary, but the combination indicts the very office meant to guard God’s ব্যবস্থা.
Prophets Office
Approved rendering: ভাববাদী
Transliteration: bhabbadi
Doctrine: Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Original: נְבִיאֶיהָ
Category: Leadership
See baseline entry prophet above. Elevated to High risk specifically at 3:4, where the office-holders (not the office) are condemned as faithless; requires a context-flag so readers do not conclude the office-term itself has been redefined.
Corrupt Leadership Imagery
Approved rendering: গর্জনকারী সিংহ / সন্ধ্যার নেকড়ে
Transliteration: gorjonkari shingho / sandhyar nekre
Doctrine: Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Original: אֲרָיוֹת שֹׁאֲגִים / זְאֵבֵי עֶרֶב
Category: Leadership
Metaphors for corrupt officials (‘roaring lions’) and judges (‘evening wolves’) in the fourfold leadership indictment (3:3-4). Must not be softened into generic ‘strong leaders’ language; the imagery specifically indicts leaders who prey upon those they should protect.
Humble Afflicted Of The Land
Approved rendering: দেশের নম্র লোকেরা
Transliteration: desher nomro lokera
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Original: עַנְוֵי הָאָרֶץ
Category: Remnant
‘The humble of the land,’ addressed with the imperative to seek YHWH (2:3); the seedbed of the later Remnant doctrine. Establishes that humility, not status or power, marks those preserved — a claim with sharp social force in caste/communal-status contexts.
Humility Virtue
Approved rendering: নম্রতা
Transliteration: nomrota
Doctrine: Humility versus Pride; The Remnant of Israel
Original: עֲנָוָה
Category: Remnant
Humility as a disposition/virtue commanded in 2:3, paired directly with ধার্মিকতা. Must be kept in direct antonymous contrast with গর্ব/অহংকার throughout the book.
Take Refuge In Yhwh Name
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভুর নামে আশ্রয় নেওয়া
Transliteration: Shodaprobhur name ashroy neoa
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Rejected alternatives: বিশ্বাস (lexically distinct root — do not flatly substitute)
Original: חָסוּ בְּשֵׁם יְהוָה
Category: Remnant
The remnant’s characteristic posture (3:12), from root חסה, lexically distinct from the more familiar OT ‘trust/believe’ roots. A teaching note on conceptual continuity with বিশ্বাস is useful, but the term itself must stay distinct.
Removal Of The Proud
Approved rendering: অহংকারী/গর্বিত লোকদের দূর করা
Transliteration: ohongkari/gorbito lokoder dur kora
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel; Humility versus Pride
Original: גֵּאֵי גַּבְהֵךְ
Category: Remnant
The proudly exultant ones removed from among God’s people before restoration (3:11), showing the remnant is defined by purification, not mere survival.
King Of Israel Title
Approved rendering: ইস্রায়েলের রাজা
Transliteration: Israeler raja
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People; Divine Name and Covenant Lordship
Original: מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל
Category: God
YHWH himself, not a human Davidic king, declared present as King in Zion’s midst (3:15). Rendering must make সদাপ্রভু unmistakably the referent of ‘King’; teaching materials must avoid importing a premature Christological identification into this OT text while preserving the doctrinal trajectory.
Mighty One Warrior
Approved rendering: পরাক্রমী
Transliteration: porakromi
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: বীর (‘hero/warrior’ — rejected for evoking Bengali/Indian epic warrior-hero and regional warrior-deity/folk-hero associations, risking a demigod-hero misreading)
Original: גִּבּוֹר
Category: God
YHWH depicted as a divine warrior fighting FOR Zion (3:17), reversing the warrior-judgment imagery of 1:14-16. পরাক্রমী conveys might without hero-cult resonance.
Joy Rejoice Exult Cluster
Approved rendering: আনন্দ করা / উল্লাস করা / জয়ধ্বনি করা / জয়গান করা
Transliteration: anondo kora / ullash kora / joydhoni kora / joygaan kora
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: repeating a single Bengali word for all instances (flattens the deliberate poetic intensification), কীর্তন-adjacent vocabulary (risks Vaishnava bhakti ecstatic-devotion associations)
Original: רנן / רוע / שיש / עלז / גיל / רנה
Category: Restoration
Stacked cluster of near-synonymous joy-verbs framing the core passage (3:14, 17), with GOD as the grammatical subject of joy in v.17 — the doctrinal center. Vary Bengali renderings to preserve the Hebrew’s intensification and the v.14/v.17 inclusio; the SAME root (উল্লাস) is also used negatively of Nineveh’s doomed revelry (2:15) — context, not vocabulary, carries the moral distinction.
Love Of God
Approved rendering: ভালোবাসা
Transliteration: bhalobasha
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: প্রেম (rejected — heavily associated with romantic/passionate love in Bengali popular culture, film, and Vaishnava bhakti divine-romance imagery)
Original: אַהֲבָה
Category: God
God’s own covenantal love for his people, the ground of restoration (3:17) — core term for this doctrine. ভালোবাসা is the established Bengali Bible term for God’s covenantal love (cf. John 3:16).
Still In His Love
Approved rendering: তিনি তাঁর ভালোবাসায় প্রশান্ত/নীরব থাকবেন
Transliteration: tini tar bhalobashay proshanto/nirob thakben
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: ‘he will renew you in his love’ (LXX-based variant reading — record only as a footnoted teaching alternative, never adopt as base rendering)
Original: יַחֲרִישׁ בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ
Category: God
MT/LXX textual-variant term (3:17). MT (‘be still/quiet,’ settled contentment) is the base text for Bengali OT tradition.
Seek The Lord
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভুর অন্বেষণ করা
Transliteration: Shodaprobhur onneshon kora
Doctrine: Seeking the LORD as the Required Response
Original: בַּקְּשׁוּ אֶת־יְהוָה
Category: Remnant
The book’s central positive imperative (2:3), active purposeful pursuit of God rather than passive waiting. Must convey active seeking directed specifically at সদাপ্রভু using the fixed proper-name rendering.
Shelter In Day Of Wrath
Approved rendering: আশ্রয় পাওয়া
Transliteration: ashroy paoa
Doctrine: Seeking the LORD as the Required Response
Original: תִּסָּתְרוּ
Category: Remnant
Protective concealment/refuge for the humble and righteous in the day of YHWH’s anger (2:3). Must not be read as merit earning safety — righteousness and humility position one for shelter, they do not purchase exemption, paralleling the baseline’s grace-versus-merit caution.
Medium Risk Terms
Gentiles
Approved rendering: পরজাতি
Transliteration: porojati
Doctrine: Universal Scope of Judgment and Restoration Among the Nations (conceptual cross-reference only)
Rejected alternatives: বিদেশী
Inherited from Romans package exactly, fixed for the NT Jew/Gentile ecclesiological contrast. In Zephaniah, the OT nations (גּוֹיִם) are rendered জাতি/জাতিসমূহ (see nations_goyim below); পরজাতি is referenced in teaching notes only for conceptual continuity, never substituted directly.
Israel
Approved rendering: ইস্রায়েল
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel
Inherited from Romans package exactly. Established proper name, addressed in parallel with ‘daughter of Zion/Jerusalem’ (3:14) and named in the King of Israel title (3:15) and the Remnant of Israel doctrine (3:13).
Pride Haughtiness
Approved rendering: গর্ব
Transliteration: gorbo
Doctrine: Humility versus Pride
Original: גַּאֲוָה / גֵּאוּת
Category: Judgment
Self-exaltation, the direct antonym of নম্রতা (humility), named repeatedly as the specific sin bringing judgment (2:10; 3:11). Standard Bengali moral vocabulary; keep lexically distinct from and in explicit contrast with নম্রতা wherever both occur.
Profane The Sanctuary
Approved rendering: পবিত্রস্থান অপবিত্র করা
Transliteration: pobitrosthan opobitro kora
Doctrine: Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Original: חִלְּלוּ־קֹדֶשׁ
Category: Idolatry
The priests defiling the holy/sanctuary (3:4); পবিত্র root reused from baseline holy. পবিত্রস্থান and অপবিত্র are new supporting terms.
Priests Israelite Office
Approved rendering: পুরোহিত
Transliteration: purohit
Doctrine: Corrupt Religious and Civic Leadership
Original: כֹּהֲנִים
Category: Leadership
Divinely instituted Israelite priestly office (1:4; 3:4). পুরোহিত is also the standard Bengali word for a Hindu ritual priest/Brahmin officiant; surrounding context must always make clear this is the covenant office of Israel, not a generic ritual-functionary role. First use per passage should specify with covenant framing (e.g. সদাপ্রভুর মন্দিরের পুরোহিত).
Daughter Of My Dispersed Ones
Approved rendering: আমার বিক্ষিপ্ত লোকদের কন্যা
Transliteration: amar bikkhipto lokoder konna

Daughter Of Zion
Approved rendering: সিয়োন-কন্যা
Transliteration: Shiyon-konna
Doctrine: God’s Joyful Love for His People
Rejected alternatives: plain সিয়োন alone (loses the personification)
Original: בַת־צִיּוֹן
Category: Restoration
Poetic personification of the covenant people/Jerusalem as a woman, addressed in the core passage’s opening summons to joy (3:14). Must retain the personification, carrying the maternal-filial intimacy of the judgment-to-restoration reversal.

Transliteration: ekochitte seba kora
Doctrine: Universal Scope of Judgment and Restoration Among the Nations

Approved rendering: বন্দীদশা ফিরিয়ে আনা
Transliteration: bondidosha phiriye ana
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration
Original: שׁוּב שְׁבוּת
Category: Restoration
Fixed OT restoration idiom (שׁוּב שְׁבוּת), closing the book (3:20). For cross-book consistency, this rendering should ideally align with future curricula covering Job, Jeremiah, and Amos, where the same idiom recurs.
Shame Turned To Praise
Approved rendering: লজ্জা প্রশংসা ও সুনামে পরিণত হওয়া
Transliteration: lojja proshongsha o sunamay porinoto hoya
Doctrine: Honor-Shame Reversal and Public Vindication of the Remnant
Original: תְּהִלָּה וָשֵׁם
Category: Restoration
Public honor-reversal for the formerly shamed remnant (3:19-20). High cultural salience given honor/shame dynamics in both Bengali Hindu and Muslim communal-identity contexts; must land as genuine PUBLIC status-reversal, not merely private comfort.
Gather The Outcast
Approved rendering: বিক্ষিপ্ত লোকদের সংগ্রহ করা
Transliteration: bikkhipto lokoder shongroho kora
Doctrine: The Remnant of Israel; The Day of the Lord as Judgment and Restoration

Inherited from Romans package exactly. Risk is context-elevated to High in Zephaniah 3:4, where these specific office-holders (not the office itself) are condemned as পৌঁহজিম/faithless; a context flag is required so the office-term is not misread as redefined elsewhere in Scripture.
