Doctrine Analysis: Joshua

Curriculum: Joshua Destination language: Bengali (বাংলা) Core passage: Joshua 24:14–15 Generated: Phase 1, Step 4 Consistency statement: This document uses exactly the fifteen (15) doctrines, risk tiers, and review-routing assignments recorded in assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (version 1). No doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision here contradicts that registry. This document adds full-book chapter-by-chapter traceability and translation-risk detail that the registry’s compact JSON form does not carry.

Part 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrine Coverage (Full Book, Joshua 1–24)

Every chapter of Joshua is accounted for below. Chapters that introduce no new doctrine or high-value term beyond material already covered are explicitly marked “Reviewed — no new doctrinal/terminological content” with a note on what continuing content they carry.

Joshua 1 — Commission to Joshua Doctrines: Courage through God’s Presence (1:6, 7, 9, 18); Obedience and the Conquest (1:7–8, “meditate”); God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise (1:2–6, oath to the fathers). Foundational chapter; sets the theological grounding (divine presence, divine word) for the whole conquest narrative.

Joshua 2 — Rahab and the Spies Doctrine: Rahab and the Inclusion of the Nations by Faith (2:1–24). Key terms: বেশ্যা, গুপ্তচর, বিশ্বাস (implicit in 2:9–11’s confession), বিশ্বস্ত দয়া (2:12).

Joshua 3 — Crossing the Jordan Doctrine: Divine Presence Preceding Human Action (3:1–17); reused term পবিত্র (3:5, consecration before the crossing).

Joshua 4 — Memorial Stones Doctrine: Divine Presence Preceding Human Action (4:1–24, continued); establishes the সাক্ষী (witness) motif that bookends the book, resolved at 24:26–27. No new Critical/High terms beyond সাক্ষী (Low risk).

Joshua 5 — Circumcision, Passover, Commander of the LORD’s Army Doctrines: Covenant Sign and Identity Renewal (5:2–9); Courage through God’s Presence (5:13–15, possible Christophany). (5:15, holy ground).

Joshua 6 — Fall of Jericho Doctrines: Holy War and Divine Judgment (6:17–21, herem); Rahab and the Inclusion of the Nations by Faith (6:17, 22–25, Rahab spared). Key term:

Joshua 7 — Achan’s Sin Doctrines: Holy War and Divine Judgment (herem violated); Corporate Solidarity in Sin and Judgment (7:1, 11, “Israel has sinned”). Key terms:

Joshua 8 — Conquest of Ai; Altar at Mount Ebal Doctrines: Obedience and the Conquest (8:30–35, altar, law reading); Holy War and Divine Judgment (8:24–29, Ai’s destruction); Inspiration and Authority of the Law (8:31–34, Book of the Law read publicly).

Joshua 9 — The Gibeonite Deception Reviewed — extends the oath-keeping motif established in Joshua 1 and 24 (Israel bound by its own শপথ even though obtained through Gibeonite deception, 9:19–20), reinforcing God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise doctrine’s emphasis on the gravity of sworn oaths, and providing background for the “nations” (জাতিগণ) doctrine of Holy War and Divine Judgment (why Gibeon alone among Canaanite cities was spared). No new Critical/High term introduced beyond terms already in the glossary

Joshua 10 — Southern Campaign; the Sun Stands Still Doctrines: Holy War and Divine Judgment (10:28–40); Courage through God’s Presence (10:25, “the LORD fought for Israel,” 10:14, 42).

Joshua 11 — Northern Campaign Doctrine: Holy War and Divine Judgment (11:11–21, herem against northern coalition). No new terms beyond Chapter 6–10 vocabulary; reviewed for consistent herem-term enforcement.

Joshua 12 — Summary List of Defeated Kings Reviewed — no new doctrinal or terminological content. Functions as a summary confirmation of God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise doctrine (fulfillment record of chapters 6–11); requires no new glossary entries. Numeric/list-formatting consistency is the only Phase 2 concern (Low risk).

Joshua 13 — Land Yet to Be Possessed; Transjordan Allotment Doctrines: Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment (13:1–33); God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise (continued). Key terms:

Joshua 14 — Caleb’s Inheritance Doctrines: Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment (14:1–15); Obedience and the Conquest (14:8–9, 14, “wholly followed the LORD”).

Joshua 15 — Territory of Judah Reviewed — no new doctrinal content beyond Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment (boundary-list material). Key term সীমা (Low risk) applied consistently.

Joshua 16 — Territory of Ephraim Reviewed — no new doctrinal content; boundary-list material under Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment.

Joshua 17 — Territory of Manasseh Reviewed — no new doctrinal content; boundary-list material; notes Zelophehad’s daughters’ inheritance claim as a minor sub-theme of Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment (no new glossary term required; reuse অধিকার).

Joshua 18 — Remaining Land Surveyed and Allotted; Benjamin Reviewed — no new doctrinal content beyond গুলিবাঁট (18:6–10, lot-casting), already registered under Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment.

Joshua 19 — Remaining Tribal Allotments; Joshua’s Own Inheritance Reviewed — no new doctrinal content; concludes the tribal-allotment sequence (19:51 confirms গুলিবাঁট as the closing allotment mechanism).

Joshua 20 — Cities of Refuge Doctrine: Judicial Restraint of Vengeance (20:1–9). Key terms:

Joshua 21 — Levitical Cities; the LORD Gives Rest Doctrines: Rest in the Promised Land as a Type of Salvation Rest (21:43–45, the doctrinal high-water mark); God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise (21:43–45 as summary fulfillment statement). No new Critical/High terms; reuses

Joshua 22 — The Transjordan Altar Controversy Doctrine: Covenant Unity Among the Tribes (22:1–34). Key terms: বিদ্রোহ, সাক্ষী (altar as witness, distinguished from a sacrificial altar), reused বেদী.

Joshua 23 — Joshua’s Farewell Address Doctrines: Exclusive Worship and Rejection of Syncretism (23:6–16); Obedience and the Conquest (23:6, continued law-obedience theme); Rest in the Promised Land (23:1, background reference); God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise (23:14, “not one word has failed”). Key term: আঁকড়ে থাকা (22:5; 23:8, cling to the LORD).

Joshua 24 — Covenant Renewal at Shechem (Core Passage: 24:14–15) Doctrines: Covenant Renewal at Shechem (24:1–27, core doctrine); Exclusive Worship and Rejection of Syncretism (24:14–23); Inspiration and Authority of the Law (24:25–26, Book of the Law); God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise (24:2–13, historical recital of God’s acts). Key terms: সদাপ্রভু, দেবতা/অন্য দেবতা, সেবা করা, সদাপ্রভুকে ভয় করা, বেছে নেওয়া, সরলতা, বিশ্বস্ততা, পরিবার, বিধি ও শাসন, সাক্ষী (closing the book’s witness-motif inclusio opened at 4:1–7). This chapter carries the single highest concentration of Critical-tier terms in the book and anchors the entire curriculum.

Part 3 — Notes for Phase 2 Routing

  • All Critical and High risk doctrines (10 of 15) route to mandatory human theologian review for every occurrence, per the registry’s review_routing field; no segment containing these doctrines’ key terms may be auto-approved.
  • Medium risk doctrines (5 of 15) route to native speaker review; none require theologian escalation unless a Critical/High key term (e.g., সদাপ্রভু, দেবতা, বর্জিত বস্তু) co-occurs in the same segment, in which case the higher routing tier governs the whole segment.
  • No Low-risk doctrines exist at the doctrine level in Joshua (unlike the Romans package); several individual terms within High/Medium doctrines are independently Low risk (e.g., সীমা, গুপ্তচর, সাক্ষী) and may be automated-review-only when they appear outside a Critical/High doctrinal context.
  • Chapters 12 and 15–19 are explicitly confirmed as reviewed with no new doctrinal or terminological content; they must still be translated in full but require no new translation-memory entries beyond consistent reuse of অধিকার, সীমা, and গুলিবাঁট.

This document extends, and does not contradict, assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json and analysis/08_core_glossary.md. All risk tiers and routing decisions above are identical to the registry.

Critical Risk Doctrines

Holy War and Divine Judgment

Bengali name:
Key terms: herem, anger_of_the_lord, unfaithful_trespass, nations_canaanite, lord_fought_for_israel
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: হেরেম (বর্জিত বস্তু) must never be rendered in a way readable as a transferable holy-war ethic or as endorsement of religiously-motivated communal violence — a matter of acute pastoral sensitivity given the historical and present reality of Hindu-Muslim communal violence in Bengal and Bangladesh. Every occurrence requires a translator/theologian note distinguishing this as a unique, time-bound act of divine judicial judgment within Israel’s specific conquest narrative, not a pattern for believers today. Must also avoid resonance with generalized Hindu yajna-style ritual destruction.

Covenant Renewal at Shechem

Bengali name:
Key terms: lord_yhwh, other_gods, serve, fear_the_lord, choose_human, covenant_establish, cling_to
Review routing: Human theologian

CRITICAL: this is the core-passage doctrine. It depends on three distinctions being held simultaneously and without collapse: সদাপ্রভু (never প্রভু) as the named covenant God; দেবতা (never ঈশ্বর) for the false gods being renounced; and সেবা করা as exclusive, total allegiance rather than the non-exclusive, portfolio-style temple-seba familiar from Bengali Hindu devotional practice. Any blurring of these three collapses the entire chapter’s rhetorical force — that Israel is choosing one specific God over specific named rivals, not adopting a general posture of religiosity.

High Risk Doctrines

God’s Faithfulness to the Land Promise

Bengali name:
Key terms: promised_land, swear_oath, inheritance_land, lot_casting, israel, lord_yhwh
Review routing: Human theologian

The doctrine depends on শপথ করা conveying a unilateral, unconditional divine oath rather than a negotiated agreement, and on প্রতিজ্ঞাত দেশ (not bare দেশ) marking the land as covenant fulfillment. Because সদাপ্রভু is required throughout as the promise-keeper’s name, any drift toward প্রভু or a generic deity term would sever the promise from its specific covenant source, weakening the doctrine’s historical-particularity claim in a religious environment (Hindu and Muslim alike) where promises from deities are often understood as conditional or negotiable rather than sworn and unbreakable.

Courage through God’s Presence

Bengali name:
Key terms: be_strong_and_courageous, commander_of_lords_army, lord_fought_for_israel
Review routing: Human theologian

বলবান ও সাহসী হও risks being extracted as a stand-alone motivational slogan common to devotional-poster culture, severing courage from its grounding clause ‘for the LORD is with you.’ The doctrine’s force depends on courage being a derivative of covenant presence, not self-generated willpower or generic positive-thinking rhetoric.

Rahab and the Inclusion of the Nations by Faith

Bengali name:
Key terms: harlot, faith, covenant_kindness_chesed, gentiles_contrast
Review routing: Human theologian

বেশ্যা must be retained without euphemistic softening; softening (e.g., to ‘innkeeper’) erases the doctrine’s force that grace reaches the socially excluded. Rahab’s confession in 2:11 must be read consistently with বিশ্বাস as it functions in the NT, so Bengali readers see one continuous doctrine of faith-based inclusion across both Testaments rather than two unrelated concepts sharing a word by coincidence.

Obedience and the Conquest

Bengali name:
Key terms: meditate, law, book_of_the_law, altar, burnt_offering, wholly_followed_the_lord, command
Review routing: Human theologian

The doctrine’s backbone verb, hagah (‘meditate’), must never be rendered ধ্যান করা, the term now overwhelmingly associated with yogic/Buddhist silent meditation technique; that rendering would relocate the doctrine’s emphasis from audible, repeated, obedience-aimed rehearsal of God’s word to a self-directed contemplative practice foreign to the text. বেদী and হোমবলি likewise require anchoring notes to prevent readers from importing Vedic yajna ritual frames into acts of exclusive, obedient worship.

Rest in the Promised Land as a Type of Salvation Rest

Bengali name:
Key terms: rest_in_the_land, inheritance_land, promised_land
Review routing: Human theologian

বিশ্রাম must be anchored as a covenant-secured, God-given settledness, not a self-attained liberation state. Given Bengali readers’ familiarity with মোক্ষ/নির্বাণ as liberation reached through the seeker’s own spiritual discipline, an unanchored rendering of ‘rest’ risks importing that self-effort framework into a doctrine that, like পরিত্রাণ itself, must remain a received gift secured by God’s faithfulness rather than an attainment.

Exclusive Worship and Rejection of Syncretism

Bengali name:
Key terms: other_gods, serve, cling_to, fear_the_lord
Review routing: Human theologian

This doctrine’s persuasive force depends on দেবতা and সেবা করা conveying real, live religious alternatives being decisively renounced, not abstract temptations; softening either term risks reducing Joshua’s farewell warning to generic moral advice rather than an exclusive-allegiance demand set against Bengal’s religiously plural social context.

Inspiration and Authority of the Law

Bengali name:
Key terms: law, book_of_the_law, meditate, statute_and_rule
Review routing: Human theologian

ব্যবস্থা must never be rendered ধর্ম (which in Bengali denotes both Hindu cosmic duty and ‘religion’ as a whole) or শরিয়ত (the Islamic legal-idiom term); either substitution would recast Moses’ God-given covenant law as a generic religious code interchangeable with other traditions’ legal-religious systems.

Covenant Sign and Identity Renewal (Circumcision)

Bengali name:
Key terms: circumcision, passover
Review routing: Human theologian

ত্বকছেদ must never be rendered সুন্নত, the near-universal Bengali word for the practice, which for the overwhelming majority of Bengali readers is functionally synonymous with the Islamic rite; using it would collapse a load-bearing Abrahamic/Mosaic covenant sign into an Islamic-idiom container, the same class of error the baseline document guards against with মশীহ/ইঞ্জিল/ঈসা.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Corporate Solidarity in Sin and Judgment

Bengali name:
Key terms: unfaithful_trespass, anger_of_the_lord, herem
Review routing: Native speaker review

Achan’s individual sin is narrated as corporate guilt (‘Israel has sinned,’ 7:11, singular). This corporate-solidarity concept needs native-speaker judgment to convey clearly to modern, more individualistically-read Bengali audiences without implying arbitrary collective punishment disconnected from real covenant structures.

Divine Sovereignty in Land Allotment

Bengali name:
Key terms: lot_casting, inheritance_land, boundary
Review routing: Native speaker review

গুলিবাঁট must be kept clear of Bengali folk-astrological or gambling associations with chance (ভাগ্য/লটারি); native-speaker review can confirm the rendering reads as sovereign divine determination rather than impersonal fortune in the tribal-allotment narrative context.

Judicial Restraint of Vengeance

Bengali name:
Key terms: refuge_city, avenger_of_blood, unintentional_killer
Review routing: Native speaker review

This institution exists to restrain private vendetta, not endorse it; native-speaker review should confirm the framing does not read as tacit biblical endorsement of blood-feud/family-honor revenge customs still present in parts of South Asia.

Covenant Unity Among the Tribes

Bengali name:
Key terms: witness_stone, rebellion, altar
Review routing: Native speaker review

The Transjordan tribes’ witness-altar must be clearly distinguished from a second, functioning sacrificial site, or Bengali readers may perceive it as legitimizing worship outside the commanded location; native-speaker review should confirm সাক্ষী and বেদী remain distinguishable in context.

Divine Presence Preceding Human Action

Bengali name:
Key terms: ark_of_covenant, priests, holy
Review routing: Native speaker review

The ark, not Israel’s own strength or ritual competence, leads the Jordan crossing; নিয়ম-সিন্দুক must not be shortened to bare সিন্দুক, which would lose the covenant-object identity and could be misread through a generic Bengali ritual-object frame rather than as the specific locus of God’s guiding presence.
