B. New Terms Established for Obadiah (to be added to translation_memory.json)
| # | English Term | Original (Hebrew) | Transliteration | Bengali Rendering | Bengali Transliteration | Risk Tier | Doctrine Link | Verse(s) | Rejected Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | LORD (covenant name, YHWH) | יְהוָה | YHWH | সদাপ্রভু | Sodaprovu | Critical | Day of the Lord for All Nations; Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | 1:1, 1:15, 1:18, 1:21 | প্রভু (alone, insufficiently specific), ভগবান, আল্লাহ | New foundational term for this curriculum. Standard Bengali Bible Society rendering of the divine covenant name YHWH, kept strictly distinct from প্রভু (generic “Lord/master,” reused for κύριος/Christ’s Lordship in the Romans baseline). Must never be interchanged with প্রভু in either direction. |
| 2 | Lord GOD / Sovereign LORD (Adonai YHWH) | אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה | Adonai YHWH | প্রভু সদাপ্রভু | Provu Sodaprovu | Critical | Day of the Lord for All Nations | 1:1 | সার্বভৌম ঈশ্বর (loses the compound divine-name structure) | Compound title pairing generic প্রভু (Adonai, “Lord/Master”) with সদাপ্রভু (YHWH). Must theologian-review every occurrence given the divine-name stacking. |
| 3 | Day of the LORD | יוֹם־יְהוָה | yom-YHWH | সদাপ্রভুর দিন | Sodaprovur din | Critical | The Day of the Lord for All Nations | 1:15 | বিচারের দিন (loses divine-name anchor), প্রভুর দিন (risks confusion with NT “the Lord’s Day” referring to Christ/Sunday) | The book’s theological climax term. Must be rendered identically wherever it recurs in future OT curricula (Isaiah, Joel, Amos, Zephaniah, Malachi all use this phrase) for cross-curriculum consistency. |
| 4 | nations (all peoples, non-technical) | גּוֹיִם | goyim | জাতিসমূহ / সকল জাতি | jatishomuho / shokol jati | Medium | The Day of the Lord for All Nations | 1:2, 1:15, 1:16 | পরজাতি (baseline term reserved for the Pauline Jew/Gentile technical contrast; wrongly implies a category Edom, itself included among “the nations,” does not fit) | Deliberate departure from baseline পরজাতি for this specific Hebrew usage; does not contradict the baseline, which retains পরজাতি for its own (different) NT context. |
| 5 | pride of heart | זְדוֹן לֵב | zedon lev | হৃদয়ের অহংকার | hridoyer ohongkar | Critical | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | 1:3 | দৃঢ়তা (mere firmness, too weak), গর্ব (milder vanity, insufficiently severe) | Central term for Doctrine 1. Denotes defiant self-exaltation against God, not ordinary self-confidence. |
| 6 | violence | חָמָס | chamas | সহিংসতা | shohingshota | Critical | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | 1:10 | সংঘাত (mere conflict, too neutral) | Names the specific charge that triggers Edom’s judgment: violent injustice against a brother-nation. |
| 7 | brother (kinsman-nation) | אָח | ach | ভাই | bhai | High | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | 1:10, 1:12 | আত্মীয় (generic relative, loses the specific twin-brother covenant weight) | Simple vocabulary but doctrinally load-bearing: names Edom’s sin as betrayal of kin, an aggravating factor. |
| 8 | wisdom (Edom’s proverbial wisdom, removed by God) | חָכְמָה | chokmah | প্রজ্ঞা | progya | High | Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | 1:8 | জ্ঞান (carries strong Hindu Vedantic/yogic liberating-gnosis connotations inappropriate here) | Must not be rendered জ্ঞান; see semantic analysis for full rationale. |
| 9 | deliverance / escape (remnant) | פְלֵיטָה | peleitah | উদ্ধারপ্রাপ্ত দল / অবশিষ্ট দল | uddharprapto dol / obosisto dol | High | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | 1:17 | পলায়ন (mere “fleeing,” loses the remnant-community sense) | Names a surviving remnant-community preserved by grace; conceptually related to (but not identical in referent to) Romans 11’s remnant of Israel. |
| 10 | survivor (negated: “none shall remain”) | שָׂרִיד | sarid | অবশিষ্ট (কেউ না) | obosisto (keu na) | High | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | 1:18 | — | Deliberately contrasts with #9 (Jacob’s preserved remnant) to show God’s precise, discriminating justice. |
| 11 | saviors / deliverers (plural, human) | מוֹשִׁעִים | moshi’im | উদ্ধারকর্তাগণ | uddharkortagon | Critical | God’s Justice for the Oppressed; Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | 1:21 | ত্রাণকর্তা / পরিত্রাণকর্তা (reserved for the singular divine/messianic Savior; would wrongly imply these OT human deliverers are identical to Christ) | Shares the Hebrew root יָשַׁע with “salvation” (পরিত্রাণ) and “Jesus,” but denotes plural historical human agents (cf. the Judges), not the singular divine Savior. Requires a translator note distinguishing this from Christological “Savior” language. |
| 12 | judge (verb, judicial-governmental) | שָׁפַט | shafat | বিচার করা | bichar kora | High | God’s Justice for the Oppressed | 1:21 | শাসন করা alone (loses the judicial-verdict sense) | |

Reuses রাজ্য (kingdom) from the baseline’s kingdom_of_god pattern (ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য) but substitutes সদাপ্রভুর for ঈশ্বরের. Mandatory theologian review, no exceptions. |
| 14 | Mount Zion | הַר צִיּוֹן | har Tziyon | সিয়োন পর্বত | Siyon porbot | Medium | Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | 1:17, 1:21 | সিয়োন পাহাড় (পাহাড় too casual for a named sacred site) | Established proper-name form; পর্বত reserved for named sacred/theological mountains, consistent with “holy mountain” usage. |
| 15 | holy mountain | הַר קֹדֶשׁ | har qodesh | পবিত্র পর্বত | pobitro porbot | High | Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | 1:16 | — | Combines reused পবিত্র (baseline) with পর্বত. |

C. Risk Tier Summary for Obadiah-Specific Terms
| Risk Tier | Count | Review Routing |

| Critical | 5 | Human theologian (mandatory, every occurrence) |
| High | 13 | Human theologian |
| Medium | 17 | Native speaker review |
| Low | 5 | Automated review |
D. Cross-Curriculum Consistency Flags
- সদাপ্রভু (Sodaprovu) is introduced here for the first time in this Language Package family. It must be added to a shared cross-curriculum divine-names table so that every future Old Testament curriculum (Psalms, Isaiah, the other Minor Prophets, etc.) reuses it identically, exactly as প্রভু, ঈশ্বর, যীশু, and পবিত্র আত্মা are already fixed across the Romans baseline.
- সদাপ্রভুর দিন (Day of the LORD) will recur verbatim in Isaiah, Joel, Amos, Zephaniah, and Malachi curricula; lock this rendering now to avoid drift.
- উদ্ধারকর্তাগণ (moshi’im, “saviors” pl.) must never be allowed to drift toward পরিত্রাণকর্তা/ত্রাণকর্তা in later Phase 2 passes; this is the sharpest false-friend risk in the entire book given the shared root with “salvation.”
- জাতিসমূহ vs. পরজাতি: future OT curricula should default to জাতিসমূহ/সকল জাতি for generic “nations” (goyim) and reserve পরজাতি strictly for NT contexts carrying Paul’s Jew/Gentile theological contrast.
Critical Risk Terms
God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বর
Transliteration: Ishshor
Doctrine: Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: ভগবান, আল্লাহ
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Reserve strictly for genuinely generic references to God, never as a substitute for the covenant name YHWH (সদাপ্রভু), which the Hebrew text of Obadiah specifically requires wherever YHWH occurs.
Lord
Approved rendering: প্রভু
Transliteration: provu
Doctrine: Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: মালিক, ঈশ্বর
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. In Obadiah used ONLY as the generic honorific title within the compound প্রভু সদাপ্রভু (Adonai YHWH, 1:1). Must never stand alone for YHWH; must never be interchanged with সদাপ্রভু in either direction.
Yhwh Covenant Name
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভু
Transliteration: Sodaprovu
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: প্রভু (alone, insufficiently specific), ভগবান, আল্লাহ, যাহওয়েহ্ (raw phonetic transliteration, breaks with established Bengali Bible corpus)
Original: יְהוָה
Category: God
NEW foundational term for this Old Testament curriculum family. Standard Bengali Bible Society rendering of the divine covenant name YHWH. Must be kept strictly distinct from প্রভু (the baseline’s rendering of κύριος for Christ’s Lordship in Romans) so the OT covenant name and NT title for Christ never collapse into the same word. Anchors all four curriculum doctrines. Must be locked for reuse in every future OT curriculum (Isaiah, Joel, Amos, Zephaniah, Malachi, Psalms, etc.).
Lord God Adonai Yhwh
Approved rendering: প্রভু সদাপ্রভু
Transliteration: Provu Sodaprovu
Doctrine: Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: সার্বভৌম ঈশ্বর (loses the compound divine-name structure)
Original: אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה
Category: God
Compound divine title (Obadiah 1:1) pairing the reused baseline term প্রভু (Adonai, generic “Lord/Master”) with সদাপ্রভু (YHWH). Preserve the two-word compound exactly; a single-word collapse destroys the doctrinally significant double divine-name stacking. Mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence.
Day Of The Lord
Approved rendering: সদাপ্রভুর দিন
Transliteration: Sodaprovur din
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: বিচারের দিন (loses divine-name anchor), প্রভুর দিন (risks confusion with NT “the Lord’s Day”/Christ/Sunday), কিয়ামতের দিন (imports the Islamic Yawm al-Qiyamah framework), প্রলয়/যুগান্ত (imports Hindu cyclical cosmic dissolution)
Original: יוֹם־יְהוָה
Category: Judgment
The book’s theological climax term (1:15). Must be rendered identically wherever it recurs in future OT curricula (Isaiah, Joel, Amos, Zephaniah, Malachi). Requires a standing translator note at first occurrence distinguishing it from both কিয়ামত and প্রলয়/যুগান্ত.
Pride Of Heart
Approved rendering: হৃদয়ের অহংকার
Transliteration: hridoyer ohongkar
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Rejected alternatives: দৃঢ়তা (mere firmness, too weak), গর্ব (milder vanity, insufficiently severe)
Central term for Doctrine 1 (Obadiah 1:3). Denotes defiant, God-opposing self-exaltation, not ordinary self-confidence. Must remain inside the compound হৃদয়ের অহংকার — never bare অহংকার — to block a Samkhya/Vedanta ahamkara (ego-principle/metaphysical) misreading. Requires human theologian review at every occurrence.
Violence Chamas
Approved rendering: সহিংসতা
Transliteration: shohingshota
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Rejected alternatives: সংঘাত (mere conflict, too neutral)
Original: חָמָס
Category: Sin
Names the specific charge (1:10) that triggers Edom’s judgment: violent injustice against a brother-nation, not generic conflict or disagreement.
Saviors Deliverers Moshiim
Approved rendering: উদ্ধারকর্তাগণ
Transliteration: uddharkortagon
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: ত্রাণকর্তা, পরিত্রাণকর্তা (reserved for the singular Christological Savior), মুক্তিদাতা (reintroduces the forbidden মুক্তি/moksha-liberation association)
Original: מוֹשִׁעִים
Category: Salvation
Obadiah 1:21: plural human deliverer-agents (like the judges of Israel), NOT the singular divine-messianic Savior. Shares the Hebrew root יָשַׁע with পরিত্রাণ (salvation) and “Jesus,” making this the sharpest false-friend risk in the book. Mandatory translator note at every occurrence distinguishing plural historical deliverers from the singular divine Savior culminating in Christ.
Kingdom Shall Be The Lords
Approved rendering: রাজ্য সদাপ্রভুর হবে
Transliteration: rajyo Sodaprovur hobe
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: রাজ্য ঈশ্বরের হবে (loses the specific covenant-name emphasis), রাষ্ট্র/সাম্রাজ্য/সার্বভৌমত্ব-based renderings (import modern nation-state, colonial-empire, or political-sovereignty connotations)
Original: וְהָיְתָה לַיהוָה הַמְּלוּכָה
Category: Kingdom
The book’s climactic clause (1:21). Reuses রাজ্য from the baseline’s kingdom_of_god pattern but substitutes সদাপ্রভুর for ঈশ্বরের to preserve the Hebrew’s covenant-name specificity — a distinct theological assertion, not stylistic variation. Mandatory human theologian review, no exceptions.
High Risk Terms
Holy
Approved rendering: পবিত্র
Transliteration: pobitro
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: শুচি, নির্মল
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. In Obadiah applies to Zion (“my holy mountain,” 1:16) and Zion’s restored status (“there shall be holiness,” 1:17, নামপদ derivative পবিত্রতা). Avoid ritual-purity-only readings (শুচি) closer to Hindu shuddhi.
Covenant
Approved rendering: নিয়ম
Transliteration: niyom
Doctrine: Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal
Rejected alternatives: চুক্তি, অঙ্গীকার
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. In Obadiah 1:7 renders the treaty/confederacy sense (“men of your covenant”) in the context of Edom’s false allies.
Brother Ach
Approved rendering: ভাই
Transliteration: bhai
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Rejected alternatives: আত্মীয় (generic relative, loses the specific twin-brother covenant weight)
Original: אָח
Category: Covenant
Simple vocabulary but doctrinally load-bearing (1:10, 1:12): names Edom’s sin as betrayal of kin, an aggravating factor. Do not paraphrase with ভ্রাতৃত্ব (“brotherhood”) in verse-level rendering; that term belongs only to derived application material, never to the translation itself.
Wisdom Chokmah
Approved rendering: প্রজ্ঞা
Transliteration: progya
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Rejected alternatives: জ্ঞান (carries strong Hindu Vedantic/yogic liberating-gnosis connotations)
Original: חָכְמָה
Category: Wisdom
Obadiah 1:8: God removing Edom’s proverbial wisdom is itself an act of judgment. প্রজ্ঞা is also the standard Bengali/Pali rendering of Buddhist paññā/prajñā; mitigate by always framing with the personal divine agent (“যা সদাপ্রভু দূর করে দেবেন”) rather than leaving the term to stand as an abstract attainment.
Deliverance Remnant Peleitah
Approved rendering: উদ্ধারপ্রাপ্ত দল
Transliteration: uddharprapto dol
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Rejected alternatives: পলায়ন (mere “fleeing,” loses the remnant-community sense), অবশিষ্ট দল (acceptable secondary variant)
Original: פְלֵיטָה
Category: Salvation
Obadiah 1:17: a surviving remnant-community preserved by grace, not an abstract act of escaping. Must be read against survivor_sarid (1:18) as a deliberate positive/negative contrast; never abbreviate either term to a bare অবশিষ্ট in running text.
Survivor Sarid
Approved rendering: অবশিষ্ট কেউ না
Transliteration: obosisto keu na
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: שָׂרִיד
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:18: negated survivor language, describing Edom’s total destruction. Deliberately contrasts with deliverance_remnant_peleitah (1:17, Jacob’s preserved remnant) to show God’s precise, discriminating justice. Flag for translator note at every occurrence.
Judge Shafat
Approved rendering: বিচার করা
Transliteration: bichar kora
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Rejected alternatives: শাসন করা (alone, loses the judicial-verdict sense)
Original: שָׁפַט
Category: Justice
Obadiah 1:21: both juridical judgment (verdict) and governmental rule; the deliverers’ role is to execute the verdict of divine justice against Edom.
Holy Mountain
Approved rendering: পবিত্র পর্বত
Transliteration: pobitro porbot
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Original: הַר קֹדֶשׁ
Category: Kingdom
Obadiah 1:16 (“my holy mountain”). Combines reused পবিত্র (baseline) with পর্বত, the standard Bengali Bible term for a named sacred mountain, distinct from generic পাহাড়.
Recompense Gemul
Approved rendering: প্রতিফল
Transliteration: protiphol
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: আশীর্বাদ (wrongly positive), কর্মফল (imports impersonal Hindu karma-mechanism), প্রতিশোধ (reframes as human emotional vengeance rather than divine judicial act)
Original: גְּמוּל
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:15. Retributive repayment by a personal God, proportional to deeds — divine lex talionis, not impersonal karma nor human revenge.
Drink Cup Of Judgment
Approved rendering: পান করা
Transliteration: pan kora
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: ভোগ করা (loses the specific cup-of-wrath imagery)
Original: שָׁתָה
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:16. Preserve the literal cup-drinking image for cross-reference with Isaiah 51, Jeremiah 25.
Possession Inheritance Yarash
Approved rendering: অধিকার করা
Transliteration: odhikar kora
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Original: יָרַשׁ / מוֹרָשָׁה
Category: Kingdom
Obadiah 1:17, 1:19, 1:20. Verb form; noun forms অধিকার / উত্তরাধিকার. Must be rendered identically at every occurrence for internal consistency. Conceptually related to, but distinct in referent from, দত্তকপুত্রতা (adoption/filial inheritance in the Romans baseline) — this is territorial covenant land, not filial inheritance.
For The Lord Has Spoken
Approved rendering: কারণ সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলেছেন
Transliteration: karon Sodaprovu ei kotha bolechen
Doctrine: Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: বলেছেন alone (loses the formulaic, cross-referential weight of the prophetic certification formula)
Original: כִּי יְהוָה דִּבֵּר
Category: Prophecy
Obadiah 1:18. Prophetic certification/oath formula guaranteeing certainty by appeal to YHWH’s own speech-act authority. Uses সদাপ্রভু consistently with 1:15. Must not be diluted to a generic “the prophet says.”
Day Of Calamity Cluster
Approved rendering: বিপদের দিন / বিনাশের দিন / সংকটের দিন
Transliteration: bipoder din / binasher din / shonkoter din
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: সদাপ্রভুর দিন (must NOT be used here; reserved exclusively for 1:15’s eschatological term)
Original: יוֹם אֵיד / יוֹם אֳבֹד / יוֹם צָרָה
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:12, 1:13, 1:14. A cluster of near-synonymous historical “day” expressions that literarily escalate into the eschatological সদাপ্রভুর দিন (1:15); must remain visibly distinct in wording, never collapsed to a single repeated term.
Cut Off Karat
Approved rendering: উচ্ছেদ করা
Transliteration: ucched kora
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Original: כָּרַת
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:10. Also ধ্বংস করা. Conveys the finality of Edom’s coming judgment — total severance from existence/memory, echoing 1:18’s “no survivor.”
Stand At The Breach
Approved rendering: পলায়নের পথ আটকে রাখা
Transliteration: polayoner poth atke rakha
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Original: עָמַד עַל הַפֶּרֶץ
Category: Sin
Obadiah 1:14. Names the most violent and active of Edom’s crimes: physically preventing Israelite refugees from escaping Jerusalem’s fall and handing them to the enemy — the culminating charge before the Day of the LORD verdict.
Oppressed Doctrine Noun
Approved rendering: নিপীড়িত
Transliteration: nipirito
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Rejected alternatives: জুলুম-family vocabulary (মুস্তাদাফীন, জুলুম — heavily Islamic-legal/political-idiom terms carrying activist/confrontational connotations in contemporary Bangladeshi usage)
Doctrine-level noun required to state “God’s Justice for the Oppressed” in Bengali; also অত্যাচারিত. Religiously neutral, standard literary Bengali. জুলুম is never used in this curriculum’s core text; reserved only for supplementary Muslim-background contextualization notes with explicit framing.
Justice Doctrine Noun
Approved rendering: ন্যায়বিচার
Transliteration: nyay-bichar
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Doctrine-level abstract noun for “justice,” reusing বিচার করা (judge_shafat, established) as its verbal root so the two terms stay visibly related.
Medium Risk Terms
Peace
Approved rendering: শান্তি
Transliteration: shanti
Doctrine: Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal
Rejected alternatives: সুখ, স্বস্তি
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. In Obadiah 1:7 renders the ironic “those who were at peace with you” (Edom’s treacherous allies), contextually paired with মিত্র (ally).
Kingdom Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য
Transliteration: Ishshorer Rajyo
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বরের দেশ
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly as the base pattern. In Obadiah 1:21 this pattern is NOT used verbatim; it is deliberately modified to রাজ্য সদাপ্রভুর হবে (see kingdom_shall_be_the_lords below), substituting সদাপ্রভুর for ঈশ্বরের to preserve the Hebrew’s specific covenant-name emphasis. Retained here only as the cross-reference pattern source.
Israel
Approved rendering: ইস্রায়েল
Transliteration: Israel
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Used of “the children of Israel” in Obadiah 1:20, the exile community who will receive restored territory.
Gentiles
Approved rendering: পরজাতি
Transliteration: porojati
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: বিদেশী
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly for its OWN (Pauline Jew/Gentile technical) context ONLY. EXPLICITLY NOT REUSED for Obadiah’s גּוֹיִם (goyim, “nations”); see nations_goyim below for the required Obadiah-specific rendering. Retained here defensively so Phase 2 translators do not default to this term where the Hebrew text requires জাতিসমূহ.
Nations Goyim
Approved rendering: জাতিসমূহ
Transliteration: jatishomuho
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: পরজাতি (baseline term reserved for the Pauline Jew/Gentile technical contrast; wrongly implies a category Edom, itself included among “the nations,” does not fit), সকল জাতি (acceptable variant, secondary)
Original: גּוִּים
Category: Judgment
Deliberate departure from baseline পরজাতি for this Hebrew usage (1:2, 1:15, 1:16). Edom itself is one of these “nations” facing judgment; using পরজাতি would wrongly exempt Edom via an imported NT technical distinction.
Mount Zion
Approved rendering: সিয়োন পর্বত
Transliteration: Siyon porbot
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: সিয়োন পাহাড় (পাহাড় too casual for a named sacred site)
Original: הַר צִיּוֹן
Category: Kingdom
Obadiah 1:17, 1:21. Established Bengali Bible proper-name form; marks the book’s turning point from judgment to restoration.
House Of Jacob
Approved rendering: যাকোবের বংশ
Transliteration: Jakober bongsho
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Original: בֵּית יַעֲקֹב
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:17, 1:18. Parallel construction to the baseline’s “seed of David” pattern (দায়ূদের বংশ). Establishes the Jacob/Esau kinship contrast central to the book.
House Of Esau
Approved rendering: এষৌর বংশ
Transliteration: Eshour bongsho
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Original: בֵּית עֵשָׂו
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:18. Names Edom explicitly by its kinship tie to Israel, sharpening the brother-betrayal theme.
Edom Proper Name
Approved rendering: ইদোম
Transliteration: Idom
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Original: אֱדוֹם
Category: Proper Names
Obadiah 1:1, 1:8. Established proper-name form. Theological weight lies in the kinship relationship with Israel, not the name itself.
Vision Chazon
Approved rendering: দর্শন
Transliteration: dorshon
Doctrine: Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: ভাববাণী (content of prophecy, not the visionary mode), ওহী/wahy (Islamic verbal-dictation gloss, must not be used), শ্রুতি (Hindu śruti, timeless impersonal “hearing” gloss, must not be used)
Original: חָזוֹן
Category: Prophecy
Obadiah 1:1. Established genre-marker term distinct from ভাববাণী and ভাববাদী (both baseline). Frames the book as revealed divine content addressed to a named individual prophet at a specific historical moment, not mystical timeless hearing nor mechanical dictation.
As Though They Had Not Been
Approved rendering: যেন তারা কখনও ছিলই না
Transliteration: jeno tara kokhono chilo-i na
Doctrine: The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Rejected alternatives: চলে গেছে (mere departure, loses totality)
Original: כְּלוֹא הָיוּ
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:16. Total annihilation/erasure, distinct from exile-with-restoration language.
Fire Flame Judgment
Approved rendering: আগুন
Transliteration: agun
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Original: אֵשׁ / לֶהָבָה
Category: Judgment
Obadiah 1:18. Also শিখা (flame). Ensure context marks the fire as judicial/theological (Jacob and Joseph as agents of divine justice), not merely a battle metaphor.
Captivity Exile Galut
Approved rendering: নির্বাসন
Transliteration: nirbashon
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: גָּלוּת
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:20. Also বন্দিত্ব. Names the specific exile communities who will receive restored territory — judgment does not have the last word for God’s people.
Rock Height Pride
Approved rendering: উচ্চে থাকা
Transliteration: ucche thaka
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Obadiah 1:3. Metaphorical “exalted/high” sense; for the geographic referent (Edom’s rock-capital) see sela_place_name below. No height, however extreme, escapes God’s judgment.
Sela Place Name
Approved rendering: সেলা (পাথরের চেরা স্থান)
Transliteration: Sela (patharer chera sthan)
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Obadiah 1:3. Transliterate the place-name Sela (Petra) with a bracketed gloss (“a place split into rock”) to preserve the Hebrew pun between the place-name and the common noun “rock/cliff,” which no single Bengali word carries alone.
Thief Robber
Approved rendering: রাতের ডাকাত
Transliteration: rater dakat
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Obadiah 1:5. Also চোর (thief). Ironic comparison: even ordinary thieves leave something behind, but Edom’s plunderers (and Edom itself) will be stripped completely.
Foreigners Strangers Nekhar
Approved rendering: বিদেশী
Transliteration: bideshi
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Rejected alternatives: পরজাতি (reserved for NT Jew/Gentile technical category; wrong register here)
Original: נֵכָר
Category: Nations
Obadiah 1:11. Ordinary “outsider” sense, sharpening the specific indictment that Edom, unlike mere foreigners, betrayed a brother.
Casting Lots Goral
Approved rendering: গুলিবাঁট করা
Transliteration: gulibanto kora
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Original: גּוֹרָל
Category: Culture
Obadiah 1:11. Established Bengali Bible idiom, also used of the Gospel garment-lot scene; a profane appropriation of Jerusalem’s inheritance by outsiders.
Stood Aloof
Approved rendering: দূরে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা
Transliteration: dure danriye thaka
Doctrine: God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Obadiah 1:11. Names complicity by inaction as itself culpable — bystander silence is not neutral.
Do Not Gloat
Approved rendering: আনন্দ প্রকাশ করা উচিত ছিল না
Transliteration: anondo prokash kora uchit chilo na
Doctrine: Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal
Obadiah 1:12. Names schadenfreude over a kinsman’s suffering as culpable, distinct from active violence but still condemned.
Covenant Ally Berit Shalom
Approved rendering: মিত্র
Transliteration: mitro
Doctrine: Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal
Rejected alternatives: উম্মাহ-style substitution vocabulary (imports the Islamic ummah-solidarity concept, wrong frame)
Original: בְּרִית, שָׁלוֹם
Category: Covenant
Obadiah 1:7. Contextual rendering of “those at peace with you” (নিয়ম and শান্তি reused from baseline). Bitter irony: Edom’s own treaty-partners will betray Edom just as Edom betrayed brother Jacob.
Mount Esau
Approved rendering: এষৌ পর্বত
Transliteration: Eshou porbot
Doctrine: The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Rejected alternatives: collapsing into এষৌর বংশ (house of Esau) — wrong referent, this is Edom’s specific mountain territory, not the lineage/people
Obadiah 1:8, 1:9, 1:19, 1:21. Distinct referent from house_of_esau; the geographic contrast (Esau’s mountain vs. Zion’s mountain, সিয়োন পর্বত) is structurally important to the Kingdom doctrine and must not be collapsed.
Slaughter Ketel
Approved rendering: হত্যাকাণ্ড
Transliteration: hottakando
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Obadiah 1:9. Names the concrete historical/eschatological means of the “cut off” (উচ্ছেদ করা) judgment.
Shame Bushah
Approved rendering: লজ্জা
Transliteration: lojja
Doctrine: Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Obadiah 1:10. Also অপমান. Antonym-in-context of মহিমা (glory, baseline); names the honor/shame reversal central to Doctrine 1 in an honor-shame-salient Bengali cultural context.
Low Risk Terms
Prophet
Approved rendering: ভাববাদী
Transliteration: bhabbadi
Doctrine: Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: জ্যোতিষী

Approved rendering: ভাববাণী
Transliteration: bhabbani
Doctrine: Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: গণনা
Inherited from Romans package; reused exactly. Denotes the content of Obadiah’s God-inspired message, distinct from দর্শন (the visionary mode/genre-marker) and ভাববাদী (the prophet himself).
