Doctrine Analysis

11 Doctrine Analysis — 3 John — English → Bengali

Scope and Full-Book Coverage Note

3 John is a single-chapter epistle (3 John 1:1–14). Per the PRD’s full-book-coverage mandate, this document treats the entire letter — there is no chapter 2 or beyond to review, and that fact is stated explicitly here rather than silently omitted. The core passage assigned to this curriculum (3 John 1:1–14) is the full book; every verse of the letter is therefore in scope and is addressed in the section-by-section matrix below. No verse is left unreviewed.

This document is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (v1, 2026-07-09): the same seven doctrines, the same risk tiers, and the same review routing are used throughout. Two of the seven doctrines (Spiritual Well-Being and Chosen Christian Kinship) are supporting doctrines identified during semantic analysis that underlie and reinforce the five doctrines named in the curriculum parameters; they are retained here for registry consistency and because they carry independent translation risk.

Section-by-Section Coverage (Full Book, Verse 1–14)

3 John 1:1 — Salutation

Doctrines active: Church Leadership and Pride (elder as office); Chosen Christian Kinship (Gaius addressed as ἀγαπητός/প্রিয়, “beloved,” not by clan or communal designation); Truth and Christian Fellowship (ὃν ἐγὼ ἀγαπῶ ἐν ἀληθεί᳝, “whom I love in truth”). Translation risk: প্রাচীন (elder) must read as a functional title of church office, not a bare age-descriptor. The opening “in truth” phrase must not be read as a vague sincerity-idiom; it anchors the letter’s entire theological frame in the gospel reality shared between writer and recipient. Risk level: High (compound of Church Leadership and Chosen Kinship doctrines). Review routing: Human theologian.

3 John 1:2 — Prayer for Well-Being

Doctrines active: Spiritual Well-Being (Soul over Circumstance). Translation risk: প্রাণ (soul) must be kept distinct from জীবাত্মা; সমৃদ্ধ হওয়া (prosper) must remain tightly paired with সুস্থ থাকা (be in health) so the verse is not isolated into a prosperity-gospel proof-text. Risk level: Medium. Review routing: Native speaker review.

3 John 1:3–4 — Joy at Gaius’s Faithfulness

Doctrines active: Truth and Christian Fellowship; Chosen Christian Kinship (τέκνα, “children,” spiritual not biological). Translation risk: সত্য occurs twice in v.3 alone and must consistently denote gospel-content-plus-lived-conduct (“walking in truth,” চলা/জীবনযাপন করা), never an abstract philosophical category. সন্তান (children) requires contextual framing as pastoral/spiritual parentage. Risk level: High. Review routing: Human theologian.

3 John 1:5–8 — Commendation of Hospitality; Duty to Support Gospel Workers

Doctrines active: Hospitality to Traveling Ministers (core passage for this doctrine); Truth and Christian Fellowship (v.8, “fellow workers for the truth,” সহকর্মী). Translation risk: অতিথি (v.5’s ξένους) is the sharpest single collision point in this section — it must never be taught or footnoted in a way that suggests the guest is inherently divine (as in Atithi Devo Bhava). নাম (v.7’s τὸ ὄνομα, “the Name”) is an absolute Christological idiom referring to Christ himself and must not be flattened into a vague generic phrase; a supplied clarifying phrase (যীশুর নামের জন্য) is recommended. পরজাতি (v.7’s ἐθνικῶν) reuses the Romans-TM Gentile term but carries a distinct nuance here (unbelieving outsiders from whom support was declined) that must be flagged in teaching notes to avoid confusion with the Romans Jew/Gentile-unity doctrine. Risk level: High. Review routing: Human theologian.

3 John 1:9–10 — Diotrephes’s Misconduct

Doctrines active: Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes) — core passage. Translation risk: φιλοπρωτεύων (v.9) requires the compound প্রাধান্য কামনা করা / নিজেকে প্রধান করতে চাওয়া; this condemnation of self-serving ambition must be clearly distinguished from any condemnation of legitimate eldership itself. ἐκβάλλει (v.10, বহিষ্কার করা, “casts out”) depicts a condemned abuse of authority and must not be read as modeling or endorsing communal/caste-based social expulsion, a real and painful practice in the region. μιθλυαρῶν (φλυαρέω, “talking nonsense/slander against,” মিথ্যা অপবাদ দেওয়া) must not be softened into neutral “criticism.” Risk level: High. Review routing: Human theologian.

3 John 1:11 — Exhortation to Imitate Good, Not Evil

Doctrines active: Imitating Good rather than Evil — core passage. Translation risk: “Has not seen God” (δεκα/দেখা) risks being heard through the lens of Hindu darshan (দর্শন), where visually beholding a deity or holy person’s image is itself a soteriologically significant act; John’s claim is about moral/relational knowledge of God’s character, evidenced by habitual conduct. ἀγαθοποιῶν/κακοποιῶν (doing good/evil) risk a karma-merit-ledger misreading that would contradict this curriculum family’s established grace-versus-works framework (cf. Romans TM notes on গ্রেস vs. পুণ্য). Risk level: High. Review routing: Human theologian.

3 John 1:12 — Commendation of Demetrius

Doctrines active: Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius) — core passage; Truth and Christian Fellowship (concentration of সত্য/সাক্ষ্য vocabulary). Translation risk: The verse personifies truth as an active witness (“the truth itself testifies,” αὐτὴ ἡ ἀλήθεια — সত্য নিজেই সাক্ষ্য দেয়), an unusual construction in Bengali that translators may flatten into a generic “he lived truthfully,” losing the externally-validated-character rhetorical force that makes this verse the letter’s model commendation. Risk level: Medium. Review routing: Native speaker review.

3 John 1:13–14 — Closing, Hope to Visit, Greetings

Doctrines active: Truth and Christian Fellowship; Chosen Christian Kinship (shift from ভাই, “brother,” to বন্ধু, “friend,” echoing John 15:14–15). Translation risk: কালি (ink) and কলম (pen/reed) are literal, no-risk terms. The φίλοι/বন্ধু greeting at the letter’s close is deliberate theological vocabulary (chosen intimacy, not casual social address) and must not be flattened to ordinary colloquial “friend” without register awareness. “Greet by name” here uses ὄνομα in its Low-risk literal sense — translators must disambiguate this from the High-risk absolute idiom at v.7. Risk level: High (driven by Chosen Christian Kinship doctrine’s overall tier; the literal terms within this section are individually Low risk). Review routing: Human theologian.

Doctrines Not Newly Introduced Elsewhere in Scripture but Load-Bearing Here

3 John does not introduce new terms for God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit distinct from the Romans baseline; ঈশ্বর (God, v.6, v.11) is reused exactly per the Romans translation memory with no deviation. মণ্ডলী (church, v.6, v.9, v.10) and শান্তি (peace, v.14) are likewise reused exactly. This confirms full doctrinal and terminological continuity between the Romans Language Package and this curriculum’s Language Package extension.

Consistency Statement

All doctrine names, risk tiers, key terms, and review routings in this document are drawn directly from and remain fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json (version 1, generated 2026-07-09). No new doctrine, risk tier, or routing decision is introduced here that is not already reflected in that registry. Any future revision to either document must update both in lockstep.

High Risk Doctrines

Chosen Christian Kinship (Brothers and Friends)

Bengali name: মনোনীত খ্রীষ্টীয় আত্মীয়তা (ভাই ও বন্ধু)
Key terms: brothers, friend, beloved, spiritual_children
Review routing: Human theologian

The letter deliberately frames relationships among gospel workers with both kinship language (ভাই) and, at its close, chosen-friendship language (বন্ধু, echoing John 15:14-15), presenting the church as a family bound by shared faith and mutual trust rather than by blood, caste, or inherited communal-religious identity. This is theologically pointed in a region — spanning both Hindu-majority West Bengal and Muslim-majority Bangladesh — where religious community is normally inherited and communal rather than individually chosen; without a translator/teaching note, readers may flatten these terms into merely casual social address rather than hearing the claim that gospel fellowship constitutes a new, chosen family identity.

Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes)

Bengali name: মণ্ডলীর নেতৃত্ব ও অহংকার (দিয়ত্রিফি)
Key terms: elder, love_preeminence, receive_accept, slander, hinder, cast_out_expel, church
Review routing: Human theologian

φιλοπρωτεύων (‘loving to be first’) has no single-word Bengali equivalent and must be rendered as a compound (প্রাধান্য কামনা করা); this needs careful framing because status-consciousness and social rank (izzat/honor) are powerful, real forces in both Bengali Hindu and Muslim community life, and readers could mistake the condemnation of self-serving ambition for a condemnation of church office itself (প্রাচীন) rather than of pride within it. Separately, ἐκβάλλω (‘cast out,’ বহিষ্কার করা) depicting Diotrephes’s expulsion of faithful believers is acutely sensitive given real, painful communal/caste-based social-expulsion practices in Bengali society; without an explicit note, readers may read this passage as normalizing rather than condemning such expulsion.

Hospitality to Traveling Ministers

Bengali name: যাত্রী প্রচারকদের প্রতি অতিথিসেবা
Key terms: stranger_guest, faithful, worthy_of_god, send_on_journey, support_receive, fellow_worker, the_name, gentiles
Review routing: Human theologian

The natural Bengali rendering of guest/stranger, অতিথি, collides with the widely known Hindu devotional maxim Atithi Devo Bhava (‘the guest is God’ — Taittiriya Upanishad), which frames hospitality as veneration of the guest as a literal divine manifestation. 3 John’s doctrine is categorically different: material support is given to itinerant gospel workers specifically because they serve the truth of Christ (v.8’s ‘fellow workers for the truth’), not because any guest is inherently divine. Without a translator note anchoring this distinction, Bengali readers steeped in this maxim risk hearing a guest-deification ethic rather than gospel-partnership hospitality.

Imitating Good rather than Evil

Bengali name: মন্দের পরিবর্তে ভালোর অনুকরণ
Key terms: imitate, evil, good, doer_of_good, doer_of_evil, see_know_god, god
Review routing: Human theologian

The clause ‘has not seen God’ (ἑώρακεν τὸν θεόν), naturally rendered দেখা, carries a specific collision risk in Bengali Hindu devotional practice, where darshan (দর্শন) — visually beholding a deity’s or holy person’s image — is itself treated as a soteriologically significant devotional act. Without a translator note, readers may hear John’s claim about moral/relational knowledge of God’s character (evidenced by habitual doing of good vs. evil) as a claim about ritual darshan instead. Additionally, ἀγαθοποιῶν/κακοποιῶν (doing good/evil) risk being read through a karma-merit accounting framework rather than as fruit of a God-given relational identity, which would contradict the grace-versus-merit doctrine already established for this curriculum family.

Truth and Christian Fellowship

Bengali name: সত্য ও খ্রীষ্টীয় সহভাগিতা
Key terms: truth, true, love, brothers, spiritual_children, walk_conduct, testify, testimony, friend, greet
Review routing: Human theologian

সত্য (truth) is the entrenched, unavoidable Bengali Bible term, but it collides conceptually with the Vedantic/Vaishnava philosophical category of Satya/Sat as an attribute of the impersonal Absolute (cf. Sat-Chit-Ananda; Gandhi’s Satyagraha); 3 John’s truth must be anchored to the specific person and message of Christ and to observable conduct, never left as an abstract metaphysical category. Separately, প্রেম (love) collides with Gaudiya Vaishnavism’s technical term prema for romantically-figured Radha-Krishna devotional love, a tradition historically centered in Bengal; love here must be anchored to concrete, verifiable action (hospitality, testimony), not left as an unqualified devotional-emotional term.

Medium Risk Doctrines

Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius)

Bengali name: বিশ্বস্ত সাক্ষী দিমীত্রিয়ের প্রশংসা
Key terms: testify, testimony, true, elder
Review routing: Native speaker review

The verse’s personification of truth as an active witness (‘the truth itself testifies’) is unusual in Bengali if rendered literally (সত্য নিজেই সাক্ষ্য দেয়) and risks being flattened by translators into a generic ‘he lived truthfully,’ losing the personification that makes this verse the letter’s model of externally validated Christian character. No direct syncretism collision distinct from the terms already flagged under Truth is present, so native speaker review (rather than theologian review) is sufficient to confirm the personification is preserved naturally.

Spiritual Well-Being (Soul over Circumstance)

Bengali name: আত্মিক মঙ্গল (প্রাণের অবস্থা)
Key terms: soul, prosper, health
Review routing: Native speaker review

প্রাণ (soul) must be distinguished from the Hindu metaphysical জীবাত্মা, the individual soul bound within the rebirth cycle; here it denotes a this-life spiritual condition before God. সমৃদ্ধ হওয়া (prosper) risks a prosperity-gospel misreading if rendered or taught apart from its immediate pairing with physical health and soul-condition in the same verse.
