Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Hosea
Purpose
This document provides the complete doctrine matrix for the book of Hosea (chapters 1–14), mapping every doctrine identified in doctrine_risk_registry.json to its supporting passages, risk tier, specific Bengali translation risk, and review routing. It then walks the entire book chapter by chapter to confirm full coverage, explicitly noting chapters that surface no new doctrinal or terminological content rather than silently omitting them.
A. Doctrine Matrix (Full Registry, 17 Doctrines)
| # | Doctrine | Bengali Doctrine Name | Risk | Key Terms | Primary Passages | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness | ইস্রায়েলের অবিশ্বস্ততা সত্ত্বেও ঈশ্বরের অবিচল প্রেম | Critical | chesed, compassion, freely/nedavah, healed | 2:19-20; 6:6; 10:12; 11:1-4; 11:8-9; 12:6; 14:4 | অবিচল প্রেম must not collapse into weak দয়া or merge with baseline soteriological অনুগ্রহ (charis); must not be read through Bengali Vaishnava prema-bhakti categories. | Human theologian |
| 2 | Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking | নিয়ম-ভঙ্গকারী আত্মিক ব্যভিচার ও প্রতিমাপূজা | Critical | zanah/zenunim, na’aph, pesilim/atsabbim, Baal, calf idol, qedeshah | 1:2; 2:2-17; 4:10-19; 8:4-6; 10:5; 13:1-2 | প্রতিমা names the exact devotional object of mainstream Bengali Hindu practice; doctrine must stay undiluted but framed as covenant-specific historical charge, never a general polemic against neighbors. | Human theologian |
| 3 | The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People | ঈশ্বর ও তাঁর প্রজাদের জন্য বিবাহ রূপক | Critical | Gomer, ishi/ba’ali pun, betroth, Lo-ammi/Ammi, Lo-ruhamah/Ruhamah | 1:2-2:23; 3:1-5; 11:1-4 | The husband/Baal pun and the covenant-fidelity structure must not be assimilated to Bengali Vaishnava parakiya/prema imagery, which inverts the metaphor’s logic (love transcending marital law vs. love bound by it). | Human theologian |
| 4 | Judgment and Compassion Held Together | বিচার ও করুণার একত্র উপস্থিতি | Critical | Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah/Ruhamah, compassion grows warm, heart recoils, burning anger, lion | 1:4-2:1; 11:5-9; 13:7-8 | Real wrath (প্রচণ্ড ক্রোধ) and real compassion (করুণা) must both be preserved without either canceling the other; 11:9’s “not a man” claim must not be softened for pastoral comfort. | Human theologian |
| 5 | The Call to Return and Repentance | ফিরে আসা ও মন পরিবর্তনের আহ্বান | High | shuv, return/repent, bent on turning away | 3:5; 5:4; 5:15; 6:1; 7:10; 11:5; 11:7; 12:6; 14:1-4 | One consistent Bengali verb (ফিরে আসা) required across every ironic and straightforward occurrence; must be distinguished from Islamic legal-acquittal তওবা. | Human theologian |
| 6 | Divine Calling and Corporate Sonship of Israel | ইস্রায়েলের আহ্বান ও সাম্মিলিক পুত্রত্ব | Critical | called nation, son (corporate Israel), child Israel | 11:1 | পুত্র (plain “son”) must never be rendered ঈশ্বরের পুত্র (baseline’s Critical title reserved for Christ’s unique divine Sonship); Matthew 2:15 typology teaching requires an explicit distinguishing note. | Human theologian |
| 7 | Covenantal Knowledge of God | ঈশ্বরের সাথে নিয়মভিত্তিক জ্ঞান | Critical | da’at Elohim, knowledge of God | 4:1; 4:6; 6:3; 6:6 | জ্ঞান alone risks a Hindu/Buddhist jnana-enlightenment reading; must be paired with relational/covenantal qualifying language in every occurrence. | Human theologian |
| 8 | Covenant Breaking by Israel’s Leaders and People | নিয়ম-ভঙ্গ | High | berit, covenant, bagad | 4:1-19; 6:7; 8:1; 8:12 | নিয়ম must retain full relational-bond weight, not commercial চুক্তি-style contract-breach weight. | Human theologian |
| 9 | Exclusive Lordship and Savior Identity of YHWH | সদাপ্রভুর একমাত্র ত্রাণকর্তৃত্ব | Critical | YHWH divine name, savior, god | 13:4 | Exclusivity claim (“no savior besides me”) must retain full force against both Hindu polytheistic devotional plurality and Islamic denial that this role belongs to anyone but Allah. | Human theologian |
| 10 | Ransom and Redemption from Death and Sheol | মৃত্যু ও শিওল থেকে উদ্ধার | Critical | padah/ga’al, ransom/redeem, Sheol | 13:14 | উদ্ধার করা required (never মুক্তি/মুক্ত করা); শিওল must never become পাতাল. Directly quoted at 1 Corinthians 15:55. | Human theologian |
| 11 | Divine Revelation through the Prophetic Word | ভাববাদীর মাধ্যমে সদাপ্রভুর প্রকাশিত বাক্য | High | YHWH divine name, word of the LORD, prophet, prophecy | 1:1; 1:2; 12:10; 12:13 | সদাপ্রভু must stay visibly distinct from baseline’s প্রভু; prophetic inspiration mediated through Hosea’s own voice/experience must be distinguished from Qur’anic dictation and Hindu shruti. | Human theologian |
| 12 | Justice and Covenant Ethics Paired with Steadfast Love | অবিচল প্রেমের সাথে যুক্ত ন্যায়বিচার | High | mishpat, justice, betroth, chesed | 2:19-20; 10:12; 12:6 | ন্যায়বিচার must remain visibly distinct from ধার্মিকতা (righteousness) despite thematic closeness. | Human theologian |
| 13 | Divine Wrath and Historical Judgment | ঈশ্বরের ক্রোধ ও ঐতিহাসিক বিচার | High | burning anger, sword judgment, lion, “will not come in wrath” | 5:14; 8:14; 9:1-9; 11:5-6; 11:9; 13:7-8 | Real judicial anger must not be flattened into mild displeasure; the restraint of 11:8-9 only carries weight if the wrath preceding it is genuinely preserved. | Human theologian |
| 14 | Symbolic Prophetic Sign-Acts (Marriage and Naming) | প্রতীকী ভাববাদী চিহ্ন-কার্য (বিবাহ ও নামকরণ) | High | Gomer, Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah/Ruhamah, Lo-ammi/Ammi, ransom/redeem | 1:2-9; 2:22-23; 3:1-5 | Each symbolic name’s gloss must be rendered identically at its judgment occurrence and its later restoration reversal, or the sign-act’s theological point is lost. | Human theologian |
| 15 | Restoration and Future Covenant Blessing | পুনরুদ্ধার ও ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ম-আশীর্বাদ | Medium | olive tree, healed/restored, David | 2:21-23; 3:5; 14:4-7 | Largely descriptive agricultural/dynastic imagery; olive tree image flagged for future consistency with Romans 11 material. | Native speaker review |
| 16 | Corporate and Leadership Accountability | সামষ্টিক ও নেতৃত্বের দায়বদ্ধতা | Medium | ”like people, like priest,” prophet | 4:4-9; 9:7-8 | 9:7’s quotation of the people’s scorn (“the prophet is a fool”) must be clearly framed as their accusation, not the narrator’s assessment. | Native speaker review |
| 17 | Holiness and the Otherness of God | ঈশ্বরের পবিত্রতা ও ভিন্নধর্মিতা | Critical | holy, Holy One in your midst, God not man | 11:9 | Must ground restrained wrath/compassion in God’s transcendent nature without contradicting the later doctrine of the Incarnation (দেহধারণ); requires particular care for Muslim-background readers for whom this God/man boundary is a live apologetic frontier. | Human theologian |
Risk Summary (matches doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical: 9 | High: 6 | Medium: 2 | Low: 0 | Total requiring theologian review: 15 | Total requiring native speaker review: 2 | Total automated-only: 0
B. Chapter-by-Chapter Coverage (Hosea 1–14)
Hosea 1 — Superscription and the Sign-Act of Marriage and Naming
Doctrines present: #11 Divine Revelation (1:1-2, “the word of the LORD… came to Hosea”); #14 Symbolic Prophetic Sign-Acts (1:2-9, the command to marry Gomer and name the children); #3 Marriage Metaphor (1:2); #4 Judgment and Compassion Held Together (1:4-6, 9, the judgment-names Jezreel, Lo-Ruhamah, Lo-Ammi); #15 Restoration (1:10-11, the reversal promise). Translation risk: First occurrence of সদাপ্রভু (1:1) — establish the সদাপ্রভু/প্রভু distinction here for the whole book. First occurrence of যিষ্রিয়েল, লো-রূহামা, লো-আম্মি — glosses must be fixed and reused identically at their ch. 2 reversal. Review routing: Human theologian (Critical/High doctrines dominate this chapter).
Hosea 2 — Extended Judgment and Betrothal Renewal
Doctrines present: #2 Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry (2:2-13, harlotry, Baal); #3 Marriage Metaphor (2:2-23, the husband/Baal pun at 2:16); #4 Judgment and Compassion (2:1, 22-23, name reversals); #12 Justice and Covenant Ethics with Steadfast Love (2:19-20, the betrothal hub verse pairing righteousness, justice, chesed, mercy); #14 Symbolic Sign-Acts (2:22-23 reversal). Translation risk: This is the book’s single densest reviewer unit — 2:19-20 requires treating ধার্মিকতা, ন্যায়বিচার, অবিচল প্রেম, and বাগদান করা as one coordinated set per the glossary. The husband/Baal pun (2:16) requires a mandatory translator note. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 3 — Hosea Redeems His Wife
Doctrines present: #3 Marriage Metaphor and #14 Symbolic Sign-Acts (3:1-3, Hosea buying back Gomer, enacting redemption before the vocabulary of redemption is stated explicitly in ch. 13); #5 Call to Return (3:5, “afterward the children of Israel shall return”); #15 Restoration (3:5, “David their king”). Translation risk: 3:2’s purchase price anticipates the উদ্ধার করা (ransom/redeem) semantic slot later fixed at 13:14; ensure narrative and doctrinal continuity is flagged for reviewers even though the abstract term is not yet used. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 4 — Indictment: No Knowledge of God
Doctrines present: #7 Covenantal Knowledge of God (4:1, 6, the book’s first major deployment); #2 Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry (4:10-15, harlotry, spirit of harlotry, high places, first mention of qedeshah at 4:14); #8 Covenant Breaking (4:1-19, general indictment); #16 Corporate/Leadership Accountability (4:4-9, priestly guilt). Translation risk: ঈশ্বরের জ্ঞান (4:1, 6) must carry relational-covenantal qualifying language every time to avoid a Hindu/Buddhist jnana-path reading. মন্দিরের বেশ্যা (4:14) requires its confined-context footnote and joint theologian/native-speaker review per the glossary. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 5 — Warning and Withdrawal
Doctrines present: #13 Divine Wrath and Historical Judgment (5:14, the lion image); #5 Call to Return (5:4, “their deeds do not permit them to return”; 5:15, God’s own ironic “return to my place”); #8 Covenant Breaking (5:7, treachery/bagad). Translation risk: 5:15’s use of shuv for God’s own action must use the identical ফিরে আসা verb family as every human-directed occurrence elsewhere, preserving the deliberate irony. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 6 — A Call to Return, and Covenant Breach Recalled
Doctrines present: #5 Call to Return (6:1, “Come, let us return to the LORD”); #1 God’s Steadfast Love (6:4, 6, chesed appears twice, including the “I desire chesed, not sacrifice” hub verse quoted at Matthew 9:13 and 12:7); #7 Knowledge of God (6:3, 6); #8 Covenant Breaking (6:7, “like Adam they transgressed the covenant”). Translation risk: 6:6 is a cross-curriculum bridge verse (NT quotation); অবিচল প্রেম and ঈশ্বরের জ্ঞান appear paired in the same verse and must both retain their distinct, non-overlapping senses. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 7 — Ephraim’s Compulsive Unfaithfulness
Doctrines present: #13 Divine Wrath (7:13, “woe to them”); #5 Call to Return (7:10, “they do not return to the LORD”; 7:11, the “silly dove” image, glossary-flagged for reversal at 11:11). Translation risk: No new terms beyond glossary entries already fixed (অহংকার, pride, 7:10; কপোত/ঘুঘু, dove, 7:11). Reviewed: chapter contributes reinforcement of established doctrines #5 and #13, no new doctrinal category. Review routing: Human theologian (High/Critical doctrines already active from prior chapters continue here).
Hosea 8 — Idolatry and the Coming Whirlwind
Doctrines present: #2 Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry (8:4-6, the calf of Samaria — first explicit calf-idol occurrence, requiring the mandatory cow-veneration disambiguation footnote); #8 Covenant Breaking (8:1, 12, law and covenant transgressed); #16 Corporate/Leadership Accountability (8:4, kings made without God’s sanction); #13 Divine Wrath (8:14, sowing wind/reaping whirlwind imagery, fire on cities). Translation risk: গো-বৎস প্রতিমা footnote must be introduced here at its first occurrence (8:5) per the glossary’s mandatory-footnote instruction. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 9 — Judgment on the Feasts and the Prophet’s Scorn
Doctrines present: #16 Corporate/Leadership Accountability (9:7-8, “the prophet is a fool” — the people’s scornful accusation, not narratorial judgment); #13 Divine Wrath (9:1-9, judgment on festivals); #2 Spiritual Adultery (9:1, “like a prostitute”). Translation risk: 9:7 requires clear framing markers (quotation/attribution language) in Bengali so the insult reads unambiguously as the people’s voice, protecting confidence in ভাববাদী (prophet) as an office in good standing. Review routing: Native speaker review (per registry routing for this specific doctrine), with theologian oversight retained for the surrounding wrath material.
Hosea 10 — The Luxuriant Vine and Its Idolatrous Fruit
Doctrines present: #2 Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry (10:5-8, the calf of Beth-aven, altars, high places); #12 Justice and Covenant Ethics (10:12, “sow righteousness, reap steadfast love… seek the LORD”); #13 Divine Wrath (10:5-8, judgment on Samaria and its king). Translation risk: 10:12 pairs ধার্মিকতা, অবিচল প্রেম, and ন্যায়বিচার again (echoing 2:19-20) — reviewers should cross-check consistency between the two hub verses. Beth-aven/Bethel wordplay (glossary term) is active here (10:5, 8) and requires its mandatory footnote. Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 11 — CORE PASSAGE: Judgment and Compassion, Sonship, and Divine Otherness
Doctrines present: #6 Divine Calling and Corporate Sonship of Israel (11:1, “out of Egypt I called my son” — the Matthew 2:15 typological anchor); #1 God’s Steadfast Love (11:3-4, teaching Ephraim to walk, healed them, cords of kindness, yoke image); #5 Call to Return, ironically reversed (11:5-7, “they refused to return… bent on turning away”); #13 Divine Wrath (11:5-6); #4 Judgment and Compassion Held Together (11:8-9, the Admah/Zeboiim allusion, heart recoils, compassion grows warm); #17 Holiness and Otherness of God (11:9, “I am God and not a man… the Holy One in your midst”). Translation risk: This chapter carries the single highest concentration of Critical-risk doctrine in the book and requires the most exacting theologian review of any unit in the curriculum. পুত্র (11:1) must never shift toward ঈশ্বরের পুত্র. প্রচণ্ড ক্রোধ and করুণা (11:8-9) must both retain full force. The dove image (11:11) reverses 7:11’s negative valence into trembling, positive return — both occurrences must use the same headword. Review routing: Human theologian (mandatory for every occurrence in this chapter, no exceptions).
Hosea 12 — Jacob’s Deceit and the Call to Justice and Love
Doctrines present: #5 Call to Return (12:6, “return to your God, hold fast to love and justice”); #11 Divine Revelation (12:10, 13, prophets and visions, Moses bringing Israel up); #12 Justice and Covenant Ethics (12:6, mishpat and chesed again paired). Translation risk: Jacob typology (12:3-4, 12) requires a light OT-background gloss given low narrative literacy in the target audience; deceitful scales (12:7) is a Medium-risk supporting image with no doctrinal collision risk. Review routing: Human theologian (High/Critical doctrines active).
Hosea 13 — Exclusive Savior and Ransom from Death
Doctrines present: #9 Exclusive Lordship and Savior Identity of YHWH (13:4, “you know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior”); #10 Ransom and Redemption from Death and Sheol (13:14, quoted in 1 Corinthians 15:55); #13 Divine Wrath (13:7-8, lion/leopard/bear judgment imagery). Translation risk: The two highest cross-curriculum-consequence terms in the book occur here: ত্রাণকর্তা (savior) and উদ্ধার করা/শিওল (ransom/Sheol). Both carry absolute forbidden-substitution rules (no মুক্তি/মুক্ত করা, no পাতাল). Review routing: Human theologian.
Hosea 14 — The Call to Return Fulfilled, and Healing Promised
Doctrines present: #5 Call to Return (14:1-3, the book’s climactic and most explicit repentance appeal, “take with you words”); #1 God’s Steadfast Love (14:4, “I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely,” featuring nedavah); #15 Restoration and Future Covenant Blessing (14:5-7, dew, lily, olive tree, cedar imagery).
Translation risk: 14:4’s স্বেচ্ছায় (freely) must remain terminologically distinct from baseline’s অনুগ্রহ per the glossary; সুস্থ করা/আরোগ্য করা here carries a spiritual-restoration sense (apostasy healed), not merely physical healing. This is the Jewish liturgical Haftarah for Shabbat Shuvah — a comparative-theology point developed further in 04_comparative_theology.md.
Review routing: Human theologian.
C. Coverage Confirmation
Every chapter of Hosea (1–14) has been reviewed above. No chapter was silently omitted. Chapters 7 and 9 contribute no new doctrinal categories beyond those already established elsewhere in the book but are explicitly logged as reviewed, reinforcing existing High/Critical and Medium doctrines respectively. All 17 doctrines in doctrine_risk_registry.json are represented at least once in the chapter mapping above, and all risk tiers and review routings match the registry exactly.
This document must be read alongside 08_core_glossary.md (term-level detail) and doctrine_risk_registry.json (canonical risk tiers) before any Phase 2 translation work begins.
Critical Risk Doctrines
God’s Steadfast Love despite Israel’s Unfaithfulness
Bengali name: ইস্রায়েলের অবিশ্বস্ততা সত্ত্বেও ঈশ্বরের অবিচল প্রেম
Key terms: chesed, steadfast love, compassion, freely/nedavah, healed
Review routing: Human theologian
The core doctrine hinges on অবিচল প্রেম (chesed), a term with no exact Bengali equivalent. If translators default to the weaker দয়া or, worse, blend it with the baseline’s soteriological অনুগ্রহ (grace/charis), Bengali readers lose the specifically covenantal, relationship-sustaining character of God’s love that survives Israel’s repeated unfaithfulness — a nuance neither Hindu bhakti devotion vocabulary nor Islamic rahmah fully supplies without qualification.
Spiritual Adultery and Idolatry as Covenant Breaking
Bengali name: নিয়ম-ভঙ্গকারী আত্মিক ব্যভিচার ও প্রতিমাপূজা
Key terms: zanah/zenunim, na’aph, pesilim/atsabbim, Baal, calf idol, qedeshah
Review routing: Human theologian
প্রতিমা (idols) names the exact devotional object of mainstream Bengali Hindu practice, especially Durga Puja imagery; the doctrine must be preserved undiluted per the baseline’s no-softening rule while being explicitly framed as a covenant-specific historical charge against Israel, not a general polemic against Bengali Hindu neighbors. Every idolatry-themed teaching unit requires human theologian review to enforce this framing.
The Marriage Metaphor for God and His People
Bengali name: ঈশ্বর ও তাঁর প্রজাদের জন্য বিবাহ রূপক
Key terms: Gomer, ishi/ba’ali husband-master pun, betroth, Lo-ammi/Ammi, Lo-ruhamah/Ruhamah
Review routing: Human theologian
The metaphor’s linguistic engine is the Hebrew pun that Baal means both a false god’s name and “husband/master” (2:16). Bengali স্বামী independently carries a “lord/master” sense, which fortuitously preserves the pun’s force, but this must be made explicit in a translator note rather than assumed self-evident, since an unexplained pun risks being missed entirely by readers without Hebrew background.
Judgment and Compassion Held Together
Bengali name: বিচার ও করুণার একত্র উপস্থিতি
Key terms: Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah/Ruhamah, compassion_grows_warm, heart_recoils, burning_anger, lion
Review routing: Human theologian
Hosea 11:8-9 requires the Bengali text to hold real divine wrath (আমার প্রচণ্ড ক্রোধ) and real divine compassion (করুণা) together without either canceling the other, immediately followed by 11:9’s claim that God’s non-human nature is the ground of his restraint. Over-softening the wrath language to make God seem more purely compassionate — a tempting move when addressing readers sensitized to divine anger from either tradition’s popular imagination — would destroy the passage’s actual theological structure.
Divine Calling and Corporate Sonship of Israel
Bengali name: ইস্রায়েলের আহ্বান ও সাম্মিলিক পুত্রত্ব
Key terms: called_nation, son_corporate_israel, child_israel
Review routing: Human theologian
Hosea 11:1’s “my son” (Israel, corporate and historical) must be rendered plain পুত্র and never ঈশ্বরের পুত্র, the baseline’s Critical-risk title reserved for Christ’s unique, eternal, co-equal divine Sonship. Because this verse is typologically quoted at Matthew 2:15, there is a real risk that teaching materials linking the two texts could blur Israel’s corporate sonship with Christ’s ontological Sonship in the mind of a Bengali reader already navigating Islamic objections to “Son of God” language — a translator note distinguishing the two referents is mandatory wherever this link is taught.
Covenantal Knowledge of God
Bengali name: ঈশ্বরের সাথে নিয়মভিত্তিক জ্ঞান
Key terms: da’at Elohim, knowledge_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
Bengali জ্ঞান carries strong Hindu/Buddhist philosophical weight (jnana-marga, the path of intellectual/mystical knowledge toward liberation in Vedanta and Buddhist thought). Rendering “knowledge of God” with জ্ঞান alone risks readers hearing an enlightenment-path doctrine rather than Hosea’s relational, covenantal, marital sense of “knowing” God; relational qualifying language is required in every occurrence.
Exclusive Lordship and Savior Identity of YHWH
Bengali name: সদাপ্রভুর একমাত্র ত্রাণকর্তৃত্ব
Key terms: yhwh_divine_name, savior, god
Review routing: Human theologian
“You know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior” is an exclusivity claim that must retain its force undiluted in Bengali, since the Bengali religious landscape (both Hindu polytheistic devotional practice and, differently, Islamic monotheism that denies this savior role to anyone but Allah) makes readers from both dominant traditions likely to either relativize the exclusivity or reject its later NT application to Jesus without careful bridging.
Ransom and Redemption from Death and Sheol
Bengali name: মৃত্যু ও শিওল থেকে উদ্ধার
Key terms: padah/ga’al, ransom_redeem, sheol
Review routing: Human theologian
This verse is directly quoted in 1 Corinthians 15:55 regarding Christ’s resurrection victory, making it a live cross-curriculum term. মুক্তি/মুক্ত করা must never be used here because of the forbidden Hindu liberation-from-rebirth (moksha) association; likewise শিওল must never become পাতাল, the specific Hindu Puranic netherworld. Both forbidden substitutions would import an entirely different cosmology into a verse that anticipates bodily resurrection.
Holiness and the Otherness of God
Bengali name: ঈশ্বরের পবিত্রতা ও ভিন্নধর্মিতা
Key terms: holy, holy_one_in_your_midst, god_not_man
Review routing: Human theologian
“I am God and not a man… the Holy One in your midst” grounds God’s restrained wrath and unfailing compassion in his transcendent, non-human nature. This verse must be taught so as not to contradict the later doctrine of Christ’s incarnation (দেহধারণ), and requires particular pastoral sensitivity for Muslim-background readers, for whom the God/man ontological boundary Hosea asserts here is already a live and sensitive doctrinal frontier regarding Christian claims about Jesus.
High Risk Doctrines
The Call to Return and Repentance
Bengali name: ফিরে আসা ও মন পরিবর্তনের আহ্বান
Key terms: shuv, return/repent, bent_on_turning_away
Review routing: Human theologian
The Hebrew shuv root must be rendered with one consistent Bengali verb (ফিরে আসা) across all its ironic and straightforward occurrences, including where God himself “returns” to his place in judgment (5:15) and where Israel is “bent on turning away” (11:7). Must be explicitly distinguished from Islamic তওবা, a ritual-legal repentance/acquittal formula, since shuv names relational turning to a Person rather than a prescribed act securing acquittal.
Covenant Breaking by Israel’s Leaders and People
Bengali name: নিয়ম-ভঙ্গ
Key terms: berit, covenant, bagad, covenant_breaking_treachery
Review routing: Human theologian
নিয়ম (baseline covenant term) must remain distinct from a merely commercial চুক্তি reading; Hosea’s repeated charge that Israel “transgressed my covenant” depends on নিয়ম carrying full relational-bond weight, not contract-breach weight, or the theological force of covenant infidelity is reduced to a legal technicality.
Divine Revelation through the Prophetic Word
Bengali name: ভাববাদীর মাধ্যমে সদাপ্রভুর প্রকাশিত বাক্য
Key terms: yhwh_divine_name, word_of_the_lord, prophet, prophecy
Review routing: Human theologian
Hosea’s dense use of the divine name YHWH (rendered সদাপ্রভু, newly introduced beyond what the Romans baseline required) must be kept visibly distinct from প্রভু, or the OT covenant-name/NT title distinction collapses. Additionally, God-breathed prophetic speech mediated through a human author’s own voice and experience (Hosea’s own marriage) must be distinguished from the Islamic doctrine of the Qur’an’s verbal dictation and from the Hindu concept of shruti heard by sages.
Justice and Covenant Ethics Paired with Steadfast Love
Bengali name: অবিচল প্রেমের সাথে যুক্ত ন্যায়বিচার
Key terms: mishpat, justice, betroth, chesed
Review routing: Human theologian
These hub verses pair ন্যায়বিচার (justice) with ধार्मिকতা (righteousness) and অবিচল প্রেম (steadfast love) in single sentences; ন্যায়বিচার must be kept terminologically distinct from ধার্মিকতা even though they are thematically close, or the Bengali reader loses Hosea’s specific ethical pairing of right social conduct with covenant loyalty, collapsing two related but distinguishable concepts into one.
Divine Wrath and Historical Judgment
Bengali name: ঈশ্বরের ক্রোধ ও ঐতিহাসিক বিচার
Key terms: burning_anger, sword_judgment, lion, will_not_come_in_wrath
Review routing: Human theologian
God’s real judicial anger (আমার প্রচণ্ড ক্রোধ) must not be flattened into mild displeasure for pastoral comfort; the doctrine of Judgment and Compassion Held Together depends on this wrath being genuinely preserved in the text, not merely gestured at, before its restraint in 11:8-9 can carry its intended theological weight.
Symbolic Prophetic Sign-Acts (Marriage and Naming)
Bengali name: প্রতীকী ভাববাদী চিহ্ন-কার্য (বিবাহ ও নামকরণ)
Key terms: Gomer, Jezreel, Lo-ruhamah/Ruhamah, Lo-ammi/Ammi, ransom_redeem
Review routing: Human theologian
Hosea’s own life (marrying Gomer, naming his children with judgment-names later reversed) functions as enacted prophecy. Every symbolic name’s gloss (যিষ্রিয়েল, লো-রূহামা/রূহামা, লো-আম্মি/আম্মি) must be rendered identically at both its judgment occurrence and its later restoration reversal, or the sign-act’s entire theological point — that the same name can carry both judgment and grace — is lost on the Bengali reader.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Restoration and Future Covenant Blessing
Bengali name: পুনরুদ্ধার ও ভবিষ্যৎ নিয়ম-আশীর্বাদ
Key terms: olive_tree, healed_restored, David
Review routing: Native speaker review
Agricultural and dynastic restoration imagery (dew, lily, olive tree, cedar, David as future king) is largely descriptive and low-ambiguity, but the olive tree image specifically should be flagged for consistency with any future Romans 11 olive-tree teaching material in this curriculum family.
Corporate and Leadership Accountability
Bengali name: সামষ্টিক ও নেতৃত্বের দায়বদ্ধতা
Key terms: ka’am kakohen (like people like priest), prophet
Review routing: Native speaker review
The principle that priests and prophets share, and indeed model, the people’s guilt is doctrinally straightforward and carries low syncretism risk in Bengali, but 9:7’s ironic quotation of the people’s own scorn (“the prophet is a fool”) must be clearly framed as their accusation, not the narrator’s assessment, to avoid an unintended reading that undermines confidence in true prophetic authority.
