Semantic Analysis

07 Semantic Analysis — 1 Peter (Koine Greek → Bengali)

Method and Conventions

  • Greek text follows NA28/UBS5 critical text sense divisions.
  • Every load-bearing term is analyzed with: Original, Transliteration, Literal Meaning, Semantic Range, English Variants (as seen across major English versions), Contextual Theological Meaning (meaning as used in this specific verse/passage), and Bengali Rendering Risk (with the destination-language rendering and risk tier).
  • Where a term already appears in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json, the recorded Bengali rendering is reused exactly and marked “[BASELINE TERM — reused].” No alternative is proposed for these.
  • Risk tiers follow the baseline doctrine_risk_registry.json definitions: Critical / High / Medium / Low.
  • All chapters of 1 Peter (1–5) are covered. No chapter is silently skipped.

PART A — CORE PASSAGE VERSE-BY-VERSE: 1 Peter 1:3-9

1 Peter 1:3

OriginalTranslit.Literal MeaningSemantic RangeEnglish VariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali RenderingRisk
εὐλογητόςeulogētos”well-spoken-of,” blessedbenediction formula for God only in NT usage”Blessed,” “Praise be to”Doxological opening; God is the one who is praised, not a generic well-wisherধন্য (dhonyo)Low
ΘεόςTheosGod“God”[BASELINE TERM — reused]ঈশ্বরCritical
ΠατήρPatērFatherfamilial/relational, not creator-principle”Father”God as Father of Christ specifically (not yet extended to believers until v.3’s regeneration)[BASELINE TERM — reused] পিতাCritical
ἔλεοςeleosmercy, compassion shown to the needy/guiltycovers compassion, pity, clemency”mercy”God’s compassionate disposition that acted decisively in the new birth, not sentiment aloneদয়া (doya)Medium — avoid করুণা, which carries Buddhist/Hindu bodhisattva-compassion resonance; দয়া is the established Bengali Christian term for God’s mercy toward the guilty.
πολὺ…ἔλεοςpoly eleosgreat/abundant mercyintensifies ἔλεος”great mercy,” “abundant mercy”Emphasizes the magnitude of the mercy behind the new birthমহাদয়া / প্রচুর দয়া (prochur doya)Low
ἀναγεννήσαςanagennēsashaving begotten again, caused to be (re)bornregeneration, new spiritual birth (only here and 1:23 in NT)“caused us to be born again,” “given us new birth,” “regenerated”New spiritual birth accomplished by God, the ground of the “living hope”নতুন জন্ম দিয়েছেন (notun jonmo diyechen)Critical — NEVER পুনর্জন্ম (reincarnation into a new body within samsara). This is the single most dangerous collision point in 1 Peter for a Bengali/Hindu-background reader: “born again” superficially resembles rebirth language. নতুন জন্ম (“new birth,” not “again-birth” in the transmigration sense) must be used consistently, and a translator note distinguishing it from পুনর্জন্ম is required at every occurrence (1:3, 1:23).
ἐλπίδα ζῶσανelpida zōsanliving hopeζῶσαν = present participle “living,” modifies ἐλπίς”living hope”Hope that is animated by the risen Christ himself, not wishful optimismজীবন্ত প্রত্যাশা (jibonto prottyasha)High — must not collapse into generic আশা (ordinary hope/wish) without the জীবন্ত qualifier; the hope’s “life” derives specifically from Christ’s resurrection, stated in the same clause.
ἀναστάσεως…ἐκ νεκρῶνanastaseōs…ek nekrōnresurrection…from the deadbodily, historical rising”resurrection from the dead”[BASELINE TERM — reused]; grounds the “living hope”পুনরুত্থান…মৃতদের মধ্য থেকেCritical

Doctrine anchor: The Living Hope of the Resurrection. This verse is the thesis of the whole letter’s opening doxology; নতুন জন্ম and জীবন্ত প্রত্যাশা must be rendered consistently at every later recurrence (1:23; 3:15).

1 Peter 1:4

κληρονομίαklēronomiainheritancefamily-estate inheritance; in NT, the eschatological inheritance in Christ”inheritance”The believer’s certain future possession, secured not earnedউত্তরাধিকার (uttorodhikar)Medium — must be linked to grace/adoption, not to earned merit or caste-based family inheritance customs.
ἄφθαρτοςaphthartosnot-corruptible, imperishableincapable of decay/destruction”imperishable,” “that fades not away,” “unfading” (KJV groups with next term)The inheritance cannot be destroyed by death, decay, or timeঅক্ষয় (okkhoy)High — অক্ষয় is a standard Bengali Bible word but also carries live Hindu devotional associations (e.g., Akshaya Tritiya, the “inexhaustible vessel” motif). Retain অক্ষয় as the established rendering but pair consistently with the biblical framing (kept “in heaven,” v.4b) so it is not read as a generic Hindu-devotional “imperishable” blessing.

διὰ πίστεωςdia pisteōsthrough faithinstrumental means”through faith”[BASELINE TERM — reused]; faith is the means, not the ground, of the guardingবিশ্বাসের মাধ্যমেHigh
σωτηρίαsōtēriasalvationdeliverance and rescue”salvation”[BASELINE TERM — reused]; here specifically the salvation not yet fully revealed/consummatedপরিত্রাণCritical — NEVER মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, নাজাত.

λυπηθέντεςlypēthenteshaving been grieved/distressedgenuine sorrow, not feigned”grieved,” “you suffer”Real emotional suffering that coexists with, not contradicts, exultant joyদুঃখিত হওয়া (dukkhito howa)Low

1 Peter 1:7

πολυτιμότερον χρυσίουpolytimoteron chrysioumore valuable than goldcomparative value statement”more precious than gold”Faith’s proven worth exceeds even the most valuable perishable commodityস্বর্ণের চেয়ে অধিক মূল্যবানLow

ἔπαινον καὶ δόξαν καὶ τιμήνepainon kai doxan kai timēnpraise and glory and honortriad of eschatological commendation”praise, glory, and honor”The proven faith results in Christ’s own commendation at his returnপ্রশংসা ও মহিমা ও সম্মানMedium (মহিমা baseline-reused; risk carried by মহিমা alone is High per baseline, here retained).

ἀγαπᾶτεagapateyou love (agapē-love)self-giving, covenantal love, distinct from erotic/romantic love”you love”Devoted love for the unseen Christ, the basis of persevering faithভালোবাসা (bhalobasha)Medium — avoid leading with প্রেম (prem) in this doctrinal register: প্রেম carries strong Bengali Vaishnava bhakti connotations (Radha-Krishna prema devotion) that could recast Christian love-for-Christ as devotional romantic mysticism. ভালোবাসা is the safer, established relational term.
πιστεύοντεςpisteuontesbelievingtrusting reliance”believe,” “trust”[BASELINE TERM — reused sense] object is the unseen Christবিশ্বাস করাHigh

PART B — CHAPTER-BY-CHAPTER STUDY OF THE WHOLE BOOK

τιμίῳ αἵματιtimiō haimatiprecious bloodcostly, of great value”precious blood”The costliness of Christ’s atoning blood, contrasted with silver/gold (v.18)বহুমূল্য রক্ত (bohumullyo rokto)High

πνευματικὰς θυσίαςpneumatikas thysiasspiritual sacrificesnon-animal, Spirit-enabled offerings (praise, obedience, service)“spiritual sacrifices”Replaces the OT animal-sacrifice system without replacing it with Hindu puja-offering categories (naibedya, prasad)আত্মিক বলিদান (attik bolidan)High — translator note recommended distinguishing this from Hindu ritual offering (puja/naibedya) practice, which some readers may otherwise map onto “sacrifice.”

Summary of Cross-Chapter Consistency Requirements

  1. নতুন জন্ম (new birth, 1:3, 1:23) must never be rendered পুনর্জন্ম — the single highest-frequency Critical collision risk in this book.
  2. যাজক (never পুরোহিত) for all priesthood language (2:5, 2:9) — direct load-bearer for the “Holy and Royal Priesthood” doctrine.
  3. অগ্নিপরীক্ষা as a fixed compound must be avoided for “fiery trial” (4:12) due to its Rāmāyaṇa (Sita) association; permissible only in looser descriptive or verbal form (1:7).
  4. ধার্মিকতার জন্য দুঃখভোগ (suffering for righteousness, 3:14, 4:12-19) must consistently reuse baseline ধার্মিকতা.
  5. উদ্ধার (not মুক্ত/মুক্তি) for the ransom/redemption language of 1:18.
  6. Christ’s substitutionary suffering (2:24, 3:18) must always retain the vicarious “on behalf of/in place of” force of ὑπέρ — never reduced to “example only.”
  7. The Proclamation-to-Spirits passage (3:18-22) and its parallel in 4:6 require mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence, given their unresolved exegetical complexity and high syncretism risk (purgatory-like readings; ancestor-spirit/preta folk-religious readings).
  8. প্রাচীন (elder) must be contextually distinguished from generic community/religious eldership titles in both Hindu and Muslim frames.
