Executive Summary
01 — Executive Summary: Gospel of John (English → Bengali)
Why it matters
The Gospel of John is the most theologically concentrated book yet run through this Bengali Language Package. Its core claims — Christ’s full deity, his eternal pre-existence as the Word, the Father-Son unity, and a “new birth” not achieved by human effort — sit directly on top of Bengal’s two dominant living religious traditions: Hindu Vedantic/Advaita non-dualism and Gaudiya Vaishnava bhakti devotionalism in West Bengal, and Sunni Islamic tawhid theology in Bangladesh. Romans required careful term selection; John requires that plus sustained, mandatory doctrinal notes at nearly every chapter, because several of John’s most natural-sounding Bengali renderings are simultaneously the correct Bible terms and false friends pointing straight at a rival theology (Advaita non-dualism, bhakti-prema, mokṣa/nirvana, punarjanma). Getting this wrong doesn’t just confuse — it can invert the doctrine.
Key findings
- Full-book coverage delivered. All 21 chapters analyzed; 5 chapters (2, 9, 12, 19, 20) introduce no new doctrine but are marked “reviewed” rather than omitted — chapters 19-20 in particular carry the book’s climactic doctrinal density.
- 33 distinct doctrines identified in the John-specific doctrine risk registry: 14 Critical, 11 High, 8 Medium, 2 Low — 25 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review, 8 require native speaker review, 2 automated-only.
- 89 total glossary terms now govern Phase 2 translation: 31 inherited exactly from the Romans baseline (e.g. ঈশ্বর, যীশু, দেহধারণ, পুনরুত্থান) plus 58 new terms this book introduces. Of the full 89-term set, 60 terms are Critical or High risk (23 Critical, 37 High) and therefore require mandatory human theologian review at every occurrence — nearly double the Romans baseline’s Critical/High term burden.
- Five Bengal-specific collision points dominate the risk profile, ranked by severity in
04_comparative_theology.md: (1) Father-Son unity (10:30; 17:11,21-23) vs. Advaita non-dual merger; (2) God’s love (প্রেম) vs. Gaudiya Vaishnava bhakti-prema; (3) eternal life / new birth vs. mokṣa, nirvana, punarjanma; (4) the crucifixion/resurrection vs. the Qur’an’s explicit denial of the crucifixion (4:157); (5) deity/sonship of Christ vs. Islamic tawhid/shirk categories. - The core passage (John 3:1-21) is the single densest concentration of Critical-tier vocabulary in the book — new birth, eternal life, judgment, wrath, love, and only-Son language all occur within 21 verses, and the whole passage requires theologian review regardless of individual term risk.
- A locked, cross-document rendering set is now fixed: John 1:1, 3:16, 14:6 (with unsoftened exclusivity), 20:28, 20:30-31, and আমিই at every “I am” occurrence must be rendered identically in every Phase 2 document, mirroring the Romans baseline’s treatment of Romans 1:16-17/10:9-10.
Risks
- নতুন জন্ম vs. পুনর্জন্ম (new birth vs. reincarnation) — Bengali’s most reflexively available “reborn” word names the opposite theological reality; highest-probability casual-conflation risk in the curriculum.
- এক / unity language — Bengali grammar cannot itself distinguish “unity of essence between distinct persons” from Advaitic identity-merger; no lexical fix exists, only mandatory notes and theologian review.
- প্রেম for agapē — no viable substitute exists, yet it is Bengal’s own dominant bhakti-devotional technical term; risk of every “God loved the world” reading landing as romantic-devotional longing rather than sacrificial divine initiative.
- “Already judged” (3:18) — high risk of silent flattening into a future-only Day-of-Judgment statement (Islamic pull) or an impersonal karmic ledger (Hindu pull), erasing John’s distinctive present-tense claim.
- “Eat my flesh, drink my blood” (6:53-56) — collides with both Hindu ahimsa/vegetarian sensibility and the Islamic blood-consumption prohibition; without a mandatory figurative-appropriation note this risks outright reader revulsion, not just misunderstanding.
- Sect/cult renderings in active circulation (Jehovah’s Witness NWT, Christadelphian, Unitarian/“Isa the Prophet,” Advaita-inflected retellings) systematically weaken exactly the terms this curriculum must lock hardest — John 1:1, 8:58, 9:38, 10:30, 17:21-24, 20:28. Any back-translation matching these patterns must trigger immediate escalation.
Opportunities
- John 1:41’s own in-text gloss (“Messiah, which means Christ”) models exactly how to explain খ্রীষ্ট vs. মশীহ without adopting Muslim-idiom vocabulary — reuse this as a teaching anchor.
- The foot-washing narrative (ch.13) is a rare positive cross-cultural bridge: the shock of a superior washing an inferior’s feet is immediately intelligible within Bengali honor/status culture, requiring no doctrinal fencing.
- The Bengali Common Language Version is confirmed as the closest existing register match to this package’s target style, giving Phase 2 a ready comparison text for back-translation QA (see
05_translation_landscape.md§1-2). - A fixed YouVersion citation standard (version_id 1274, book code JHN) is now established for this language pair for the first time, closing a gap the Romans baseline left unresolved.
Recommended actions
- Route John 1, 3, 6, 10, 14-17, and 20 to priority theologian-review queues in Phase 2 Step 17 ahead of lower-density chapters, given their compounding Critical-tier term concentration.
- Enforce the fifteen Doctrinal Preservation Rules in
12_ai_translation_requirements.mdas a mandatory scoring dimension, independent of ordinary lexical-accuracy scoring — several Medium-risk terms (জগৎ, চিহ্ন) still carry mandatory-note obligations that a lexical-only QA pass would miss. - Confirm the YouVersion version_id (1274) against the live catalog before any Phase 2 hyperlink generation, per the standing instruction in
05_translation_landscape.md§5.1. - Lock and freeze the cross-document renderings of John 1:1, 3:16, 14:6, 20:28, and 20:30-31, plus আমিই, before Step 16 batch processing begins, exactly as the Romans baseline froze Romans 1:16-17 and 10:9-10.
- Brief all human theologian reviewers on the sect/cult rendering table in
05_translation_landscape.md§4 before review begins, so that NWT-style, Christadelphian-style, and Advaita-retelling-style patterns are recognized immediately rather than discovered mid-review.
