Cross-Reference Analysis
09 — Cross-Reference and Theme Analysis: Gospel of John (English → Bengali)
Methodology
This document catalogs (1) every Old Testament quotation and allusion in every chapter of John, (2) every messianic reference, (3) every major typological pattern, and (4) every substantive parallel to the Romans curriculum already localized into Bengali — with rendering-consistency rules wherever John and Romans quote, cite, or echo the same underlying Scripture or make parallel doctrinal claims.
Citation format: All citations use the normalizable “Book Chapter:Verse” style (e.g., “Genesis 15:6”, “Isaiah 53:1”, “Galatians 2:16”) for cross-referencing purposes in this and downstream documents. For reader-facing Bengali output, book names follow the Requirements doc’s established Bengali Bible conventions. This document extends that book-name table for OT books newly required by John’s citation network:
| English Book | Bengali (established/extended) |
|---|---|
| Genesis | আদিপুস্তক (established) |
| Exodus | যাত্রাপুস্তক (new — extend) |
| Leviticus | লেবীয় পুস্তক (new — extend) |
| Numbers | গণনা পুস্তক (new — extend) |
| Deuteronomy | দ্বিতীয় বিবরণ (new — extend) |
| Psalms | গীতসংহিতা (established) |
| Isaiah | যিশাইয় (established) |
| Micah | মীখা (new — extend) |
| Zechariah | সখরিয় (new — extend) |
| Malachi | মালাখি (new — extend) |
| Ezekiel | যিহিষ্কেল (new — extend) |
| Daniel | দানিয়েল (new — extend) |
| John | যোহন (new — extend) |
| Romans | রোমীয় (established) |
Verse numbers remain Arabic numerals per the Requirements doc’s existing rule.
Governing rule: Where John cites, alludes to, or thematically parallels a passage already treated in the Romans baseline (translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json / doctrine_risk_registry.json), the Bengali rendering of the shared term or citation must match exactly. New OT citation vocabulary introduced only by John (e.g., Numbers 21, Zechariah 9 and 12, Ezekiel 34 and 47) is analyzed here for the first time and should be added to translation memory before Phase 2.
PART A — OT Quotation and Allusion Matrix by Chapter
John 1 (Prologue; Testimony of John the Baptist; First Disciples)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 1:1-3 | Deity & Pre-existence of Christ; Creation | The Word (Logos) | Allusion: Genesis 1:1 (“in the beginning…”); conceptual background: Proverbs 8:22-31 (wisdom present at creation); Psalm 33:6 (God’s word creates) | Critical. বচন/আদিতে wording must echo the established Bengali Genesis 1:1 opening (আদিতে ঈশ্বর…) so the reader hears the deliberate parallel. Note required: John’s Word is personal and pre-existent, unlike Wisdom-personification alone. |
| John 1:14 | Incarnation; Glory | The Word made flesh | Allusion: Exodus 33:7-11; 40:34-35 (tabernacle, God’s glory “dwelling” among Israel — σκηνόω/tabernacled echoes the Hebrew shakan); cf. Exodus 34:6 (“full of grace and truth” ≈ ḥesed weʾemet) | High. দেহধারণ [Reused] + মহিমা [Reused]. Note: “dwelt among us” evokes tabernacle/Shekinah, not a one-time avatar-appearance; tie to baseline incarnation forbidden-substitution (never অবতার). |
| John 1:15,27,30 | Forerunner testimony | John the Baptist | Allusion: Malachi 3:1 (messenger preparing the way) | Low. Standard forerunner typology. |
| John 1:23 | Forerunner testimony | John the Baptist | Quotation: Isaiah 40:3 (“voice of one crying in the wilderness”) | Low-Medium. Ensure যিশাইয় ৪০:৩ rendering matches any prior Bengali OT tradition if curriculum later cites the same verse elsewhere. |
| John 1:29,36 | Substitutionary Death; Messianic Promise | Jesus; John the Baptist | Typology: Exodus 12 (Passover lamb); Isaiah 53:7 (lamb led to slaughter); background: Genesis 22:8 (Abraham/Isaac, “God will provide the lamb”) | High. ঈশ্বরের মেষশিশু [New — see 08]. Mandatory OT sacrificial-background note; parallel to Romans’s atonement/propitiation language (Romans 3:25) — see Part D. |
| John 1:45,49 | Messianic Promise; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Philip, Nathanael | Allusion: Deuteronomy 18:15 (“the Prophet Moses wrote of”); “Son of God… King of Israel” echoes 2 Samuel 7 Davidic promise & Psalm 2:6-7 | High. Parallels Romans’s messianic_promise and davidic_covenant doctrines directly (see Part D). |
| John 1:51 | Deity & Pre-existence; Access to God | Jacob (typological) | Typology: Genesis 28:12 (Jacob’s ladder, angels ascending/descending at Bethel) | Medium. Note: Christ himself is now the place of connection between heaven and earth — background explanation needed for readers unfamiliar with the Genesis narrative. |
John 2 (Cana; Temple Clearing)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 2:17 | Deity of Christ; Zeal for God’s house | Jesus | Quotation: Psalm 69:9 (“zeal for your house will consume me”) | Medium-High. Psalm 69 is also quoted in Romans 11:9-10 (different verses, same psalm) — see Part D shared-psalm rule. |
| John 2:19-21 | Resurrection of Christ (typology); Temple | Jesus | Typology: 1 Kings 8/2 Chronicles 5-7 (temple as locus of God’s presence), now transferred to Christ’s body | High. See baseline resurrection_of_christ doctrine; theologian review flag carried from 07. |
John 3 (New Birth Discourse; John the Baptist’s Continued Testimony)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:5 | New Birth and Regeneration by the Spirit | Nicodemus; Jesus | Allusion: Ezekiel 36:25-27 (sprinkling clean water, new heart, God’s Spirit put within); Ezekiel 37:1-14 (Spirit-given resurrection life to dry bones) | High. Ezekiel’s water/Spirit new-covenant promise underlies “water and spirit.” Note: this is fulfillment of a specific OT new-covenant promise, not generic ritual purification. |
| John 3:13-14 | Deity/Pre-existence; Son of Man; Substitutionary Death | Jesus; Moses (typological) | Typology: Numbers 21:4-9 (bronze serpent lifted up on a pole); background figure: Son of Man draws on Daniel 7:13-14 | Critical. See 07/08 lifted_up entry; mandatory Numbers 21 background note; consistency required with John 8:28 and John 12:32-34 (same ὑψωθῆναι term). |
| John 3:16 | God’s Love for the World; Eternal Life; Sonship of Christ | God; the world | Thematic root: Deuteronomy 7:7-8 (God’s love as the ground of election, not human merit) — conceptual parallel, not direct quotation | Critical. Locked cross-document rendering per 08 Part C. See Part D for direct Romans 5:8/8:32 parallel. |
| John 3:36 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | God; the disobedient | Thematic root: Exodus 32:9-10; Deuteronomy 9:7-8 (God’s settled wrath against covenant unfaithfulness/unbelief) | High. See Part D — direct parallel to Romans 1:18. |
John 4 (Samaritan Woman; Nobleman’s Son)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 4:5-6,12 | Mission; Unity across ethnic-religious division | Jacob; Samaritan woman | Background: Genesis 33:19; 48:22 (Jacob’s well/land inheritance); Samaritan-Jewish estrangement rooted in 2 Kings 17:24-41 | Medium. Background note required (per 07/08 Samaritan entry); functional (not literal) analogy to Bengal’s own religious-communal boundaries may aid comprehension. |
| John 4:10-14 | Eternal Life; Holy Spirit | Jesus; Samaritan woman | Thematic root: Isaiah 55:1 (“come to the waters”); Jeremiah 2:13 (“fountain of living waters”); developed further at John 7:37-39 | Medium. See 08 living_water entry; tie explicitly to ζωὴ αἰώνιος/πνεῦμα established in ch.3. |
| John 4:20-24 | Deity of Christ; worship | Samaritan woman; Jesus | Background: Deuteronomy 12:5 (one place of worship); contrast with the temple-centered OT worship system now transcended | High. See 08 worship_proskyneo entry. |
John 5 (Healing at Bethesda; Jesus’s Authority)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 5:17-18 | Deity of Christ; Unity of Father and Son | Jesus; Jewish leaders | Background: Genesis 2:2-3 (God’s Sabbath rest) — Jesus’s claim to continue working as the Father works is a direct claim to divine prerogative | Critical. See 08 equal_with_god entry. |
| John 5:39,45-47 | Fulfillment of Prophecy; Inspiration of Scripture | Moses (typological witness) | Allusion: Deuteronomy 18:15-19 (“a prophet like me… you shall listen to him”) — “Moses… wrote of me” | High. Parallels Romans’s fulfillment_of_prophecy and inspiration_of_scripture doctrines (see Part D). |
| John 5:46 | Messianic Promise | Moses | Same as above | High. |
John 6 (Feeding of 5,000; Bread of Life Discourse)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 6:31-33 | Eternal Life; “I Am” (Bread of Life) | Moses; Israel in the wilderness | Quotation: Psalm 78:24 / allusion Exodus 16:4,15 (“bread from heaven”) | High. See 08 bread_of_life entry; mandatory manna/Exodus 16 background note. |
| John 6:45 | New Birth; Holy Spirit’s teaching ministry | God; disciples | Quotation: Isaiah 54:13 (“they shall all be taught by God”) | Medium. |
| John 6:53-58 | Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Typology: Exodus 12 (Passover meal, eating the lamb); Leviticus 17:10-14 (blood prohibition, background of shock-value) | High. See 08 eat_flesh_drink_blood entry. |
John 7 (Feast of Tabernacles; Division over Jesus’s Origin)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 7:22-23 | Law; Sabbath controversy | Moses; Abraham (circumcision) | Allusion: Leviticus 12:3; Genesis 17:10-12 (circumcision command, given priority over Sabbath rest in rabbinic reasoning) | Medium. [Reused ব্যবস্থা for law.] |
| John 7:37-39 | Holy Spirit; Eternal Life | Jesus | Allusion: Isaiah 58:11; Zechariah 14:8; Ezekiel 47:1-9 (rivers of living water flowing from the temple/Jerusalem in the last days) | High. Ties living_water (ch.4) forward to explicit Spirit-identification; feast-of-Tabernacles water-libation ritual background needed. |
| John 7:42 | Messianic Promise; Davidic Covenant | David (lineage) | Quotation/allusion: Micah 5:2 (Messiah from Bethlehem); 2 Samuel 7:12-16 (Davidic covenant); same Greek term σπέρμα Δαυίδ as Romans 1:3 | High — direct Romans parallel. Must render “seed of David” as দায়ূদের বংশ [Reused — Romans TM] exactly. See Part D. |
John 8 (“Light of the World”; “Truth Will Set You Free”; “Before Abraham Was, I Am”)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 8:12 | Deity of Christ; “I Am” (Light of the World) | Jesus | Allusion: Isaiah 9:2; 42:6; 49:6 (light to the nations/those in darkness) | High. See 08 light_of_world entry. |
| John 8:17 | Judgment; legal witness | — | Quotation: Deuteronomy 19:15 (two-or-three-witnesses rule) | Low-Medium. |
| John 8:31-40,56 | Faith; sonship (true children of Abraham); Messianic Promise | Abraham | Allusion/typology: Genesis 15:6 (Abraham’s faith); Genesis 22 (Abraham’s joy at the promise); “Abraham rejoiced to see my day” | High — direct Romans parallel. Romans 4:1-25 grounds justification by faith in this same Abraham/Genesis 15:6 narrative. See Part D — the two curricula’s Abraham material must cohere theologically (faith-not-lineage as the ground of true sonship to Abraham). |
| John 8:58 | Deity & Pre-existence; “I Am” (absolute) | Jesus | Quotation/echo: Exodus 3:14 LXX (ἐγώ εἰμι, God’s self-disclosed name to Moses) | Critical. See 08 i_am_ego_eimi entry; cross-reference যাত্রাপুস্তক ৩:১৪ mandatory. |
John 9 (Healing of the Man Born Blind)
Chapter reviewed. No new direct OT quotation. Continues light/darkness (ch.1,3,8), sin-and-suffering theology debate (echoing but reversing Job’s friends’ logic, cf. Job 4:7 — worth a background note that Jesus explicitly rejects a strict sin-causes-suffering equation, v.3), and the worship-of-Jesus motif (9:38, see ch.4 entry).
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 9:2-3 | Judgment; sin theology | Disciples; Jesus | Background contrast: Job 4:7; 8:20 (friends’ retribution theology) implicitly corrected | Medium. Avoid rendering that endorses a karma-style sin-causes-this-specific-suffering equation the text itself rejects. |
| John 9:38 | Deity of Christ; worship | The healed man | See ch.4 worship_proskyneo entry | High. |
John 10 (Good Shepherd; “I and the Father Are One”)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 10:1-18 | ”I Am” (Good Shepherd); Substitutionary Death | Jesus | Typology: Psalm 23; Ezekiel 34:11-16,23 (God/Messiah as shepherd, contrasted with Israel’s false shepherds); Numbers 27:17; Zechariah 11:4-17 | High. See 08 good_shepherd entry; Ezekiel 34 background note strongly recommended (false-shepherd polemic sharpens the contrast). |
| John 10:30 | Unity of the Father and the Son | Jesus | No direct OT quotation; theological climax of the Father-Son relationship developed since John 1:1,14,18 | Critical. See 08 father_son_unity entry; mandatory Advaita-distinguishing note. |
| John 10:34 | Deity of Christ (a fortiori argument) | Israel’s judges (typological) | Quotation: Psalm 82:6 (“I said, you are gods”) | High. Requires careful handling — Jesus’s rabbinic a fortiori argument (“if mere judges were called ‘gods’…”) must not be misread as diminishing his own unique deity claim; note recommended distinguishing this rhetorical move from his direct self-identification as God elsewhere (5:18; 10:30; 20:28). |
John 11 (Raising of Lazarus)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 11:25 | ”I Am” (Resurrection and the Life); Resurrection of Christ | Jesus | Background: Daniel 12:2; Ezekiel 37:1-14 (OT resurrection hope) now personified in Christ | Critical. See 08 resurrection_and_life entry. |
| John 11:27 | Deity of Christ; Messianic Promise (confession) | Martha | Confession parallel to John 6:69; 20:28 | Critical. Consistency with other confession-texts required. |
John 12 (Triumphal Entry; Greeks Seek Jesus; “A Grain of Wheat”)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 12:13 | Messianic Promise; Kingship | Crowds | Quotation: Psalm 118:25-26 (“Hosanna… blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”) | Medium. হোশান্না retained per 07; brief gloss recommended. |
| John 12:14-15 | Messianic Promise; Kingdom (non-political) | Jesus | Quotation: Zechariah 9:9 (king comes riding on a donkey, humble not militant) | High. Reinforce baseline kingdom_of_god’s non-political caution — the donkey deliberately signals a humble, peaceable king, not a conquering one; important corrective given political/nationalist risks flagged in 07. |
| John 12:27-28 | Substitutionary Death; “hour” motif | Jesus | Echo: Psalm 6:3-4 / Psalm 42:5-6 (soul-trouble language before God) | Low-Medium. |
| John 12:32-34 | Substitutionary Death; Son of Man | Jesus | Continues ὑψωθῆναι thread (3:14; 8:28); background Daniel 7:13-14 for Son of Man | High. Consistency required (see Part A ch.3 entry). |
| John 12:38 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Isaiah (prophetic witness) | Quotation: Isaiah 53:1 (“Lord, who has believed our report…”) | Critical — direct Romans parallel. This exact verse is also quoted in Romans 10:16. See Part D shared-citation rule; Bengali rendering MUST be identical in both curricula. |
| John 12:39-40 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Isaiah (prophetic witness) | Quotation: Isaiah 6:10 (eyes blinded, hearts hardened, so they cannot see/understand/turn) | Critical — thematic Romans parallel. Romans 11:8 quotes the conceptually parallel Deuteronomy 29:4 / Isaiah 29:10 “hardening” texts. See Part D. |
| John 12:41 | Deity of Christ; Pre-existence | Isaiah | Narrative comment: “Isaiah said these things because he saw his [Christ’s] glory” — identifies the divine figure Isaiah saw (Isaiah 6:1-3) with Christ himself | Critical. Direct pre-existence/deity claim: Isaiah’s vision of God’s glory in the temple is retroactively identified as a vision of Christ. Mandatory theologian review. |
John 13 (Foot Washing; New Commandment; Betrayal Foretold)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 13:18 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Substitutionary Death (betrayal) | Judas (typologically foreshadowed) | Quotation: Psalm 41:9 (“he who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me”) | Medium-High. Fulfillment-of-prophecy framing for the betrayal; keep the citation intact rather than paraphrasing away the “table fellowship betrayed” image, which carries strong honor/shame resonance also legible in Bengali culture. |
| John 13:34-35 | God’s Love for the World (applied) | Jesus; disciples | Echo/fulfillment: Leviticus 19:18 (“love your neighbor”) now intensified — cf. also new-covenant-law motifs of Jeremiah 31:33-34 | High. See 08 new_commandment/love_agape entries. |
John 14 (“I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life”; the Paraclete Introduced)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 14:6 | ”I Am” (Way, Truth, Life); Eternal Life | Jesus | Background: Psalm 25:4-5 (“teach me your way… in your truth”); Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (the two ways, life and death, set before Israel) — now singularly embodied in Christ | Critical. See 08 way_truth_life entry. |
| John 14:16-17,26 | Holy Spirit as Counselor | Jesus; the Father; the Spirit | Background: Isaiah 11:2 (Spirit of counsel); Joel 2:28-29 (Spirit poured out in the last days) | High. See 08 paraclete_counselor entry. |
John 15 (The True Vine; Love and Persecution)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 15:1,5 | ”I Am” (True Vine) | Jesus; Israel (typological background) | Typology: Psalm 80:8-16; Isaiah 5:1-7; Jeremiah 2:21; Ezekiel 15:1-8; 19:10-14 (Israel as God’s vine, often a failed/unfruitful vine) | High. Christ as the true vine positions him as fulfilled/faithful Israel — an important OT-Israel-typology note; also thematically parallels Romans 11:17-24’s olive-tree imagery (different plant, same grafted-relationship logic — see Part D). |
| John 15:25 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus | Quotation: Psalm 35:19 / Psalm 69:4 (“they hated me without a cause”) | Medium-High. Second Psalm 69 citation in John (cf. 2:17) — see Part D shared-psalm consistency rule. |
John 16 (The Spirit’s Future Ministry; Grief Turned to Joy; “I Have Overcome the World”)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 16:8 | Holy Spirit as Counselor; Judgment | The Paraclete | Background: Isaiah 32:15-17 (Spirit poured out, righteousness and justice result) | Critical. Compounds পাপ/ধার্মিকতা/বিচার — see 07/08. |
| John 16:21-22 | Substitutionary Death → resurrection joy | Jesus; disciples | Echo: Isaiah 26:17-19; 66:7-14 (labor-pain-to-joy imagery applied to Zion’s restoration) | Low-Medium. |
| John 16:33 | Assurance; Judgment | Jesus | Background: Isaiah 9:6-7 (peace through the Messiah’s reign) | Medium. |
John 17 (The High Priestly Prayer)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 17:1-26 | Unity of Father and Son; Deity of Christ; Holy Spirit; Eternal Life | Jesus (as High Priest, typologically) | Typology: Leviticus 16 (Day of Atonement, high priest’s mediating intercession); Numbers 6:22-27 (priestly blessing/name); background: Exodus 28 (high priest bears the names of the people) | Critical. The whole chapter functions as Christ’s high-priestly intercessory prayer; note recommended tying this forward to Christ’s ongoing intercession (parallel to Romans 8:34’s “Christ… interceding for us”). |
| John 17:3 | Eternal Life through Faith | Jesus; the Father | Definitional statement — see 07 entry; anchors the eternal_life forbidden-substitution rule | Critical. |
| John 17:11,21-23 | Unity of Father and Son (extended to believers) | Jesus; disciples | Same ἕν-unity concern as 10:30 | Critical. Mandatory Advaita-distinguishing note at every occurrence. |
John 18 (Arrest and Trial before Annas, Caiaphas, Pilate)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 18:9 | Assurance; Providence | Jesus (fulfilling his own earlier word, 17:12) | Internal NT cross-reference, not OT | Low. |
| John 18:33-38 | Kingdom (non-political); Judgment and Belief/Unbelief | Jesus; Pilate | Background: Daniel 7:13-14 (a kingdom given to “one like a son of man”) — reframed as decisively not-of-this-world | High. See 08 king_of_the_jews entry; direct parallel to Romans’s kingdom_of_god and mission_to_nations political-sensitivity cautions (Part D). |
John 19 (Crucifixion, Death, Burial)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 19:24 | Substitutionary Death; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Roman soldiers | Quotation: Psalm 22:18 (“they divided my garments… cast lots”) | High. Psalm 22 is the single most extensive OT crucifixion-typology psalm; theologian review recommended for surrounding teaching material even though the bare citation is straightforward. |
| John 19:28 | Substitutionary Death; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Jesus | Allusion: Psalm 69:21 (“they gave me… vinegar to drink”) | Medium-High. Third Psalm 69 connection in John (cf. 2:17; 15:25) — see Part D. |
| John 19:36 | Substitutionary Death; Typology (Passover Lamb) | Jesus | Quotation/typology: Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12 (“not one of his bones shall be broken”); cf. Psalm 34:20 | High. Ties directly back to Lamb of God (ch.1) and Passover typology; theologian review recommended for the typological chain across the whole book. |
| John 19:37 | Substitutionary Death; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Jesus; those who pierced him | Quotation: Zechariah 12:10 (“they will look on him whom they have pierced”) | High. Zechariah 12 also anticipates future repentance/mourning over this — worth flagging for teaching material on Israel’s future restoration (thematically adjacent to Romans 11:25-27). |
John 20 (Resurrection Appearances; Thomas’s Confession; Purpose Statement)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 20:9 | Resurrection of Christ; Fulfillment of Prophecy | Disciples (retrospective realization) | General allusion: Psalm 16:10 (background text later cited explicitly in Acts 2:25-31, not directly quoted here but the underlying OT resurrection-hope text) | High. |
| John 20:28 | Deity of Christ; Lordship of Christ | Thomas | Climactic confession — see 08 my_lord_and_my_god entry | Critical. Locked rendering. |
| John 20:30-31 | Eternal Life through Faith (thesis statement) | Narrator (John) | Structural/purpose parallel to Romans 1:16-17 | Critical. Locked rendering (see 08 Part C). |
John 21 (Epilogue; Catch of Fish; Restoration of Peter)
| Passage | Theme | Related Character | OT/NT Connection | Translation Sensitivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| John 21:15-17 | Christ-Centered Ministry; Restoration | Peter; Jesus | Typology continued from Good Shepherd (ch.10) and Ezekiel 34:1-10,23 (contrast with self-serving shepherds; the one true shepherd’s under-shepherds now commissioned) | Medium. Delegated, not independent, shepherding. |

| Vine of Israel (Psalm 80; Isaiah 5; Ezekiel 15,19) | Christ, the true, fruitful vine | 15:1-8 | I Am; Christian Identity in Christ | High |
| Bridegroom (Hosea 2; Song of Songs background) | Christ, the true bridegroom (John the Baptist as friend) | 3:29 | (minor; consistency-only) | Low |
| Living Water from the Temple (Ezekiel 47:1-9; Zechariah 14:8) | The Spirit given by Christ | 4:10-14; 7:37-39 | Holy Spirit as Counselor; Eternal Life | High |
| High Priest’s Intercession (Leviticus 16; Exodus 28) | Christ’s high-priestly prayer | 17:1-26 | Unity of Father/Son; Holy Spirit | Critical |
| The Vision of God’s Glory in the Temple (Isaiah 6:1-3) | Isaiah’s vision identified as a vision of Christ’s glory | 12:41 | Deity/Pre-existence of Christ | Critical |
PART D — Cross-Curriculum Parallels to Romans and Shared-Citation Rendering-Consistency Rules
D.1 — Identical or Near-Identical Scripture Citations Shared with Romans
| Shared Citation | Romans Occurrence | John Occurrence | Rendering-Consistency Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isaiah 53:1 | Romans 10:16 (“Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?”) | John 12:38 (same verse, same wording) | MANDATORY: identical Bengali rendering in both curricula. This is the single most direct verbatim OT-quotation overlap between the two curricula. Lock the Bengali wording once translated in either curriculum and reuse it exactly in the other; flag for theologian review to confirm cross-document consistency before either Phase 2 output is finalized. |
| σπέρμα Δαυίδ / “seed of David” | Romans 1:3 (established Bengali TM entry: দায়ূদের বংশ) | John 7:42 | MANDATORY: reuse দায়ূদের বংশ exactly — this is a translation-memory-governed term, not merely a thematic echo; no deviation permitted. |
| Genesis 15:6 / Abraham’s faith | Romans 4:3 (direct quotation, grounds imputed_righteousness doctrine) | John 8:31-40,56 (narrative reference to Abraham’s faith and joy; no direct quotation of 15:6, but the same theological claim — true sonship to Abraham is by faith, not lineage — is argued) | Coherence rule (not verbatim): John 8’s argument (“if you were Abraham’s children, you would do what Abraham did” — believe/rejoice in God’s promise) must be translated so it reads as consistent with, not contradictory to, Romans 4’s imputed-righteousness-by-faith doctrine. Avoid Bengali phrasing in John 8 that could suggest ancestry/works-based standing with Abraham, which would clash with the established আরোপিত ধার্মিকতা framework. |
| Psalm 69 (multiple verses) | Romans 11:9-10 (Psalm 69:22-23) | John 2:17 (69:9); 15:25 (69:4); 19:28 (69:21, allusion) | Consistency rule: Where the same Bengali Bible tradition’s Psalm 69 wording is available, use it consistently across all John occurrences; if any future Romans-curriculum material also engages Psalm 69, confirm no unexplained lexical drift between the two curricula’s renderings of shared phrases (e.g., “reproach,” “zeal,” “gall/vinegar” vocabulary). |
| Hardening of hearts/eyes (Isaiah 6:9-10 family) | Romans 11:8 (quotes Deuteronomy 29:4 / Isaiah 29:10 — a related but not identical “hardening” text) | John 12:39-40 (quotes Isaiah 6:10 directly) | Thematic consistency rule (not verbatim): Both curricula describe divine judicial hardening in response to persistent unbelief. Use consistent Bengali vocabulary for “harden”/“blind” (e.g., কঠিন করা / অন্ধ করা) across both curricula’s teaching material so learners recognize this as one unified biblical theme (judicial hardening), not two unrelated ideas. |
| ”Jesus is Lord” confession | Romans 10:9 (যীশু প্রভু — locked cross-document rendering per Requirements doc) | John 20:28 (আমার প্রভু ও আমার ঈশ্বর) | Coherence rule: Both are the Bible’s two clearest personal-confession texts of Christ’s Lordship. প্রভু must be rendered identically (প্রভু, never মালিক/ঈশ্বর-substitute) in both. Confirm no softening in either. |
| Declared/confessed Son of God via resurrection | Romans 1:4 (“declared to be the Son of God… by his resurrection”) | John 20:31 (“that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God”) | Coherence rule: Both curricula’s climactic Sonship-of-Christ statements are grounded in the resurrection; Bengali teaching material should make this Romans/John convergence explicit for learners moving between curricula. |
D.2 — Parallel Doctrinal Passages (Thematic, Not Direct Citation)
| John Passage | Romans Passage | Shared Doctrine | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| John 3:3-8 (new birth) | Romans 6:1-11; 8:1-17 | New Birth / Christian Identity in Christ / Adoption | Distinct vocabulary (Johannine τέκνα θεοῦ/new birth vs. Pauline υἱοθεσία/adoption) but same underlying reality — see 07/08 children_of_god note; keep terms distinguishable, teach as complementary. |
| John 3:14-15 | Romans 3:21-26 | Substitutionary Death; propitiation | John’s serpent-typology and Romans’s explicit ἱλαστήριον/propitiation language converge on the same cross-event; John supplies OT typological grounding, Romans supplies forensic explanation. |
| John 3:16 | Romans 5:8; 8:32 | God’s Love for the World | Direct thematic convergence — “God shows his love… Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8); “he did not spare his own Son” (Rom 8:32) ≈ “he gave his only Son” (John 3:16). Recommend cross-referencing both in teaching material. |
| John 3:18 | Romans 8:1 | Judgment and Belief/Unbelief; Assurance | ”Not condemned” language shared; John states the negative/positive verdict as already-rendered upon belief/unbelief; Romans states the positive assurance for those “in Christ Jesus.” |
| John 3:36 | Romans 1:18 | Judgment; Wrath of God | Both texts state God’s settled wrath remains on unbelief/unrighteousness; consistent ক্রোধ vocabulary and cautionary note (not capricious rage) should be used in both curricula’s teaching material. |
| John 6:37,44 (the Father draws/gives) | Romans 8:28-30; 9:11-16 | Effectual Calling; Election | Same divine-initiative logic (baseline election/providence entries apply); avoid impersonal-fate renderings in both. |
| John 8:34-36 (slavery to sin, freed by the Son) | Romans 6:16-22; 8:2 | Sin and Freedom | John’s সিন-slavery discourse and Romans’s slaves-of-sin/righteousness contrast are the same doctrine in two vocabularies; see 08 freedom_slavery entry for the narrowed, qualified মুক্ত-root usage. |
| John 10:28-29 (no one snatches from my hand) | Romans 8:38-39 (nothing can separate us) | Assurance of Salvation | Direct thematic pairing; recommend cross-reference in teaching material on assurance. |
| John 14:16-17,26; 16:7-15 (Paraclete) | Romans 8:14-16,26-27 (Spirit’s witness/intercession) | Holy Spirit as Counselor | Both describe the Spirit’s personal, active ministry to/through believers; consistent পবিত্র আত্মা personal-agency framing required in both. |
| John 15:1-8 (true vine) | Romans 11:17-24 (olive tree, grafting) | Unity/Continuity of God’s people | Different botanical images, same underlying logic of organic union with, and possible removal from, God’s covenant people; teaching material may note the parallel without conflating the two images. |
| John 15:12-13 | Romans 5:6-8 | Substitutionary Death; Love | ”Greater love has no one…” / “Christ died for us while we were sinners” — same self-giving-love-in-death claim. |
| John 17:20-23 (unity of believers) | Romans 12:4-5 (one body) | Church as God’s People; Unity | John grounds unity Christologically/Trinitarianly (modeled on Father-Son unity); Romans grounds it functionally (one body, many members) — complementary, not contradictory; keep the Advaita-caution note distinct to John’s ἕν-language, which Romans’s “one body” language does not carry to the same degree. |
| John 18:36 (kingdom not of this world) | Romans 14:17 (kingdom of God is not eating/drinking but righteousness, peace, joy) | Kingdom Mission | Both curricula caution against a territorial/political reading of God’s kingdom — reinforce baseline kingdom_of_god non-political note in both. |
| John 19:30 (“It is finished”) | Romans 5:6-11 (reconciliation accomplished) | Substitutionary Death | John states completion at the cross itself; Romans unpacks its accomplished result (reconciliation, justification); teach as single event, two vantage points. |
| John 20:28 | Romans 10:9 | Lordship of Christ | See D.1 above. |
| John 1:12-13; 20:31 | Romans 1:16-17 | Eternal Life through Faith / Gospel’s saving power | Both are their respective book’s programmatic thesis-adjacent statements; recommend explicit cross-referencing in any comparative Romans/John teaching material. |
PART E — Summary of Rendering-Consistency Rules for Phase 2
- Isaiah 53:1 (Romans 10:16 / John 12:38) — identical Bengali wording required; lock upon first translation.
- “Seed of David” (Romans 1:3 / John 7:42) — always দায়ূদের বংশ, no deviation.
- Abraham/faith material (Romans 4 / John 8) — must cohere with আরোপিত ধার্মিকতা; no lineage-based salvation implication in John 8’s Bengali rendering.
- Psalm 69 citations (John 2:17; 15:25; 19:28, cf. Romans 11:9-10) — consistent Bengali psalm-vocabulary across occurrences.
- Hardening-of-heart theme (Romans 11:8 / John 12:39-40) — consistent কঠিন করা / অন্ধ করা vocabulary across both curricula.
- “Jesus is Lord” / “My Lord and my God” (Romans 10:9 / John 20:28) — প্রভু rendered identically and without qualification in both.
- “Declared/believed Son of God via resurrection” (Romans 1:4 / John 20:31) — cross-reference explicitly in teaching material; no divergence in ঈশ্বরের পুত্র rendering.
- Lifted up / ὑψωθῆναι (John 3:14; 8:28; 12:32,34) — single consistent Bengali rendering across all three internal John occurrences (see 07/08).
- Kingdom non-political caution (Romans 14:17 / John 18:36) — same explanatory note pattern in both curricula.
- All [Reused — Romans TM] terms identified throughout Parts A-D retain their exact baseline Bengali form with zero deviation, per the Requirements doc’s Critical/High enforcement priority order.
