Doctrine Analysis
Doctrine Analysis: Obadiah
Purpose
This document maps every verse of Obadiah’s single chapter to its doctrinal content, risk tier, and review routing, in full agreement with doctrine_risk_registry.json. Because Obadiah has only one chapter, “full-book coverage” here means full-verse coverage: every verse (1–21) is explicitly accounted for, either as a load-bearing occurrence of one of the six curriculum doctrines or as reviewed-and-cleared with no new theological or terminological load.
The core passage (Obadiah 1:15–21) is the theological climax and anchor — the Day of the LORD’s universal scope, God’s precise justice, and the final claim that “the kingdom shall be the LORD’s” — but the doctrines it carries are seeded and prepared throughout vv.1–14, which must therefore receive equally rigorous coverage.

| 1:21 | Saviors come up on Mount Zion to judge Esau; the kingdom shall be the LORD’s | The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord; God’s Justice for the Oppressed | উদ্ধারকর্তাগণ (saviors, plural human — NOT পরিত্রাণকর্তা), বিচার করা (judge), রাজ্য সদাপ্রভুর হবে (climactic clause) | Reviewed — load-bearing; core passage climax |
No verse in Obadiah is doctrinally inert; the book’s brevity means every verse is load-bearing for at least one of the six documented doctrines. This is noted explicitly here to satisfy full-coverage requirements, since there is no chapter or section that contributes “no new terms or doctrines.”
Doctrine Matrix
| Doctrine | Supporting Passages (Obadiah) | Risk Level | Translation Risk | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People | 1:3, 1:6, 1:8, 1:9–10, 1:11–14, 1:18 | Critical | হৃদয়ের অহংকার must convey defiant self-exaltation against God (অহংকার), not mild vanity (গর্ব). সহিংসতা must denote kin-directed violent injustice, not generic conflict (সংঘাত). প্রজ্ঞা (v.8) must never be rendered জ্ঞান, which in Bengali carries Hindu Vedantic/yogic liberating-gnosis overtones that would wrongly recast God’s removal of Edom’s wisdom as loss of self-attained enlightenment. The ভাই (brother) frame is essential — this is judgment on kin-betrayal, an aggravating category with no automatic equivalent in generic international-conflict narrative. | Human theologian |
| The Day of the Lord for All Nations | 1:15, 1:16 (foreshadowed 1:12–14) | Critical | সদাপ্রভুর দিন must retain the covenant-name anchor and must never collapse into বিচারের দিন (generic “day of judgment”) or প্রভুর দিন (which Bengali NT usage ties to Christ/Sunday). জাতিসমূহ, not the baseline’s পরজাতি, is required, since পরজাতি encodes Paul’s specific NT Jew/Gentile contrast and would wrongly exempt Edom — itself one of “the nations” — from universal judgment. The vv.12–14 historical “day” cluster (বিপদের দিন, etc.) must stay visibly distinct in wording from v.15’s সদাপ্রভুর দিন so the literary escalation from particular to eschatological is not flattened. | Human theologian |
| God’s Justice for the Oppressed | 1:11, 1:12, 1:17, 1:18, 1:21 | High | উদ্ধারপ্রাপ্ত দল (Jacob’s preserved remnant, v.17) must be read against অবশিষ্ট কেউ না (Edom’s negated survivor, v.18) as a deliberate, precise contrast; collapsing both into one generic Bengali “survivors” term erases God’s discriminating justice. দূরে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা and আনন্দ প্রকাশ করা উচিত ছিল না establish bystander complicity and gloating as themselves culpable — sharply relevant given Bengal’s own history of communal violence and the live pastoral question of bystander silence. | Human theologian |
| The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord | 1:17, 1:19–20, 1:21 | Critical | রাজ্য সদাপ্রভুর হবে must substitute সদাপ্রভুর for ঈশ্বরের (departing from the Romans baseline’s ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য pattern) to preserve the Hebrew text’s specific covenant-name claim — not a stylistic choice but a distinct theological assertion tied to YHWH’s particular covenant with Israel. উদ্ধারকর্তাগণ (v.21, plural human deliverers) must never drift toward পরিত্রাণকর্তা/ত্রাণকর্তা, terms reserved elsewhere in this curriculum family for the singular divine/Christological Savior; shared Hebrew root יָשַׁע with “salvation” and “Jesus” makes this the sharpest false-friend risk in the book. | Human theologian |
| Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy | 1:1, 1:18 | High | দর্শন (vision, v.1) frames the whole book as revealed content, not the prophet’s opinion, and must be kept distinct from ভাববাণী (prophecy’s content) and ভাববাদী (the prophet), both fixed in the Romans baseline. কারণ সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলেছেন (v.18) is a certification formula grounding certainty in YHWH’s own speech-act authority; must use সদাপ্রভু consistently and must not be diluted into a generic “the prophet says,” which would shift authority from God to the human speaker — significant given competing Islamic (verbal dictation) and Hindu (shruti, sage-heard) accounts of scriptural origin in the destination culture. | Human theologian |
| Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal | 1:7, 1:10, 1:11, 1:12 | Medium | The text treats active violence, passive bystanding, and gloating satisfaction as morally equivalent before God. মিত্র/শান্তির লোক (treaty-ally language, v.7) should not read as mere political commentary; the irony that Edom’s own allies will betray Edom mirrors Edom’s betrayal of brother Jacob. This reciprocal-treachery structure needs native-speaker judgment to land naturally without becoming moralizing cliché or losing its ironic bite. | Native speaker review |

Cross-Doctrine Dependencies
- Day of the Lord for All Nations (1:15–16) is the literary and theological hinge of the whole book: it universalizes the particular historical “day” language of 1:12–14 and supplies the basis for both God’s Justice for the Oppressed and The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord in 1:17–21. Translators must preserve this escalation structure; see the distinct-wording requirement in the matrix above.
- Judgment on Pride and Violence (1:3–14, 1:18) and Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal (1:7, 10–12) share vocabulary (ভাই, সহিংসতা) but are tracked as separate doctrines because the first concerns Edom’s culpable acts and the second concerns the wider circle of complicit inaction and gloating — both by Edom and, ironically, by Edom’s own former allies.
- The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord (1:17, 21) is the direct answer to Judgment on Pride (1:3): Edom’s proud self-exaltation (“who will bring me down to the ground?” v.3) is answered point-for-point by the final declaration that the kingdom belongs to সদাপ্রভু alone, not to Edom nor to any human pride.
- Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy (1:1, 18) brackets the entire book, opening with দর্শন and closing the central judgment oracle with কারণ সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলেছেন, certifying every claim made in between.

Critical Risk Doctrines
Judgment on Pride and Violence against God’s People
Bengali name: গর্ব ও ঈশ্বরের প্রজাদের বিরুদ্ধে সহিংসতার বিচার
Key terms: pride_of_heart_zedon_lev, violence_chamas, brother_ach, rock_height_pride_sela_rum, cut_off_karat, stand_at_the_breach, wisdom_chokmah
Review routing: Human theologian
হৃদয়ের অহংকার (pride of heart) must be rendered with অহংকার, not the weaker গর্ব, to convey defiant self-exaltation against God rather than ordinary vanity. সহিংসতা (violence) must denote violent injustice against kin, not generic conflict (সংঘাত). প্রজ্ঞা (wisdom, v.8) must not be rendered জ্ঞান, which carries Hindu Vedantic/yogic liberating-gnosis connotations that would recast God’s removal of Edom’s wisdom as a loss of self-attained enlightenment rather than a withdrawal of a gift held only at God’s pleasure. The brother-betrayal frame (ভাই) is essential: this is judgment on kin-violence, an aggravating category absent from ordinary international-conflict narratives familiar to Bengali readers.
The Day of the Lord for All Nations
Bengali name: সকল জাতির জন্য সদাপ্রভুর দিন
Key terms: day_of_the_lord, nations_goyim, recompense_gemul, drink_cup_of_judgment, as_though_they_had_not_been, day_of_calamity_cluster
Review routing: Human theologian
সদাপ্রভুর দিন must retain the divine covenant-name anchor (সদাপ্রভু) and must never be substituted with the generic বিচারের দিন, nor confused with প্রভুর দিন (which Bengali NT usage associates with Christ/Sunday). জাতিসমূহ (nations) must not be rendered with the baseline’s পরজাতি, since that term encodes Paul’s specific Jew/Gentile theological contrast and would wrongly exempt Edom (Israel’s own kin) from the universal scope of judgment this doctrine requires. The historical বিপদের দিন/বিনাশের দিন/সংকটের দিন cluster (vv.12-14) must remain visibly distinct in wording from সদাপ্রভুর দিন (v.15) so the deliberate literary escalation from a particular historical day to the universal eschatological Day is not lost.
The Kingdom’s Ultimate Belonging to the Lord
Bengali name: রাজ্যের সদাপ্রভুতেই চূড়ান্ত মালিকানা
Key terms: kingdom_shall_be_the_lords, mount_zion, holy_mountain, holiness_zion_restored, possession_inheritance_yarash, saviors_deliverers_moshiim
Review routing: Human theologian
রাজ্য সদাপ্রভুর হবে is the book’s climactic clause and must substitute সদাপ্রভুর for ঈশ্বরের (unlike the baseline’s ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য pattern for Romans) to preserve the covenant-name specificity of the Hebrew text; this is not optional stylistic variation but a distinct theological claim tied to YHWH’s particular covenant with Israel. উদ্ধারকর্তাগণ (moshi’im, v.21, plural human deliverers) must never drift toward পরিত্রাণকর্তা/ত্রাণকর্তা, the terms reserved elsewhere in this curriculum family for the singular divine/Christological Savior — the shared Hebrew root יָשַׁע with ‘salvation’ and ‘Jesus’ makes this the single sharpest false-friend risk in the entire book, requiring a mandatory translator note in every occurrence.
High Risk Doctrines
God’s Justice for the Oppressed
Bengali name: নিপীড়িতদের জন্য ঈশ্বরের ন্যায়বিচার
Key terms: deliverance_remnant_peleitah, survivor_sarid, judge_shafat, stood_aloof_amad_mineged, do_not_gloat_al_tere, casting_lots_goral, foreigners_strangers_nekhar, captivity_exile_galut
Review routing: Human theologian
উদ্ধারপ্রাপ্ত দল/অবশিষ্ট দল (the preserved remnant of Jacob, v.17) must be read against অবশিষ্ট কেউ না (Edom’s negated survivor, v.18) as a deliberate, precise contrast; collapsing both into one generic Bengali term for ‘survivors’ would erase God’s discriminating justice — mercy for the oppressed, total judgment for the oppressor. দূরে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা (stood aloof) and আনন্দ প্রকাশ করা উচিত ছিল না (do not gloat) establish that bystander complicity and schadenfreude toward the oppressed are themselves culpable, a point with sharp contemporary application given Bengal’s history of communal violence where bystander silence has been a live pastoral and ethical issue.
Inspiration and Certainty of Prophecy
Bengali name: ভাববাণীর প্রেরণা ও নিশ্চয়তা
Key terms: vision_chazon, for_the_lord_has_spoken, obadiah_proper_name
Review routing: Human theologian
দর্শন (vision, v.1) frames the entire book as revealed divine content, not the prophet’s own opinion; this must be kept distinct from ভাববাণী (prophecy’s content) and ভাববাদী (the prophet), both already fixed in the Romans baseline, to avoid conflating the genre-marker with the message or the messenger. কারণ সদাপ্রভু এই কথা বলেছেন (v.18) is a certification formula guaranteeing certainty by appeal to YHWH’s own speech-act authority; it must use সদাপ্রভু consistently and must not be diluted into a generic ‘the prophet says,’ which would shift authority from God to the human speaker — a distinction doctrinally significant given competing Islamic (verbal-dictation) and Hindu (shruti, sage-heard) accounts of scriptural origin present in the destination culture.

Moral Complicity and Kinship Betrayal
Bengali name: নৈতিক জড়িততা ও আত্মীয়তার প্রতি বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা
Key terms: brother_ach, stood_aloof_amad_mineged, do_not_gloat_al_tere, covenant_ally_berit_shalom, thief_robber_gannav_shoded

The text names three distinct culpable postures toward a kinsman’s suffering — active violence, passive bystanding, and gloating satisfaction — as morally equivalent in God’s sight. Bengali readers should not read মিত্র/শান্তির লোক (treaty-ally language, v.7) as merely political commentary; the irony that Edom’s own allies will betray Edom mirrors Edom’s betrayal of brother Jacob, and this reciprocal-treachery structure needs native-speaker judgment to land naturally without becoming either moralizing cliché or losing its ironic bite.
