Executive Summary
01 — Executive Summary: 2 Thessalonians (English → Bengali)
Why it matters
2 Thessalonians extends the Bengali Romans Language Package into the hardest theological terrain a Bengali translation team will face in the New Testament: a chapter (2:1-12) whose subject matter — a deceptive end-time adversary, a coming day of divine reckoning, counterfeit signs and wonders — sits closer to live, culturally dominant eschatological narratives (Islamic Dajjal/Yawm al-Qiyāmah in Bangladesh; Hindu cyclical dissolution and karma-judgment in West Bengal) than almost any other book in the curriculum family. Getting this book’s vocabulary wrong doesn’t just blur a doctrine — it risks a Bengali reader unconsciously importing an entire rival theological system (a different antichrist figure, a different judgment mechanism, a different account of Christ’s return) into the text. This package locks the vocabulary and rules needed to prevent that.
Key findings
- 51 theological terms are now governed for this curriculum: 25 inherited unchanged from the Romans baseline (God, Jesus, Lord, grace, faith, righteousness, salvation, holy, saints, sanctification, church, glory, calling, kingdom of God, power of God, law, election, thanksgiving, peace, messiah, son of God, father, holy spirit, thanksgiving, exhort) and 41 new terms coined or fixed specifically for this book (Day of the Lord, Man of Lawlessness, Parousia, Restrainer [dual-form], Satanic Power, Traditions, Eternal Destruction, Righteous Judgment, and more).
- 16 terms carry Critical risk (absolute human theologian review, every occurrence) and 27 carry High risk — a heavier Critical/High concentration than the Romans baseline proportionally, driven almost entirely by the five-Critical-doctrine density packed into a single twelve-verse core passage.
- 18 named doctrines are tracked in the doctrine risk registry: 5 Critical, 8 High, 4 Medium, 1 Low — 13 of 18 doctrines require mandatory human theologian review; only 1 (thanksgiving) clears with automated review alone.
- The core passage, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, contains all five Critical-tier doctrines in the book (Day of the Lord, Man of Lawlessness, Blasphemous Self-Deification, Satanic Deception, God’s Righteous Judgment) and is confirmed as the single highest-density review-priority zone in the curriculum.
- Two entirely new forbidden-substitution risks not present in the Romans baseline were identified and locked: কর্মফল (Hindu karma-fruit, a direct collision with God’s Righteous Judgment) and পরম্পরা (Hindu/Sufi guru-lineage transmission, a direct collision with Standing Firm in the Traditions — elevated in risk because it is also this curriculum’s own doctrine name).
Risks
- Islamic eschatology bleed (Highest): দাজ্জাল and কিয়ামত are structurally tempting “helpful” substitutions for Man of Lawlessness and Day of the Lord that a well-intentioned translator or teacher could reach for; both are permanently forbidden because they import an incompatible resurrection/weighed-deeds soteriology and a non-divine Isa-figure Christology.
- Cult-rendering contamination: the Jehovah’s Witnesses Bengali New World Translation’s systematic rendering of parousia as “presence” (উপস্থিতি) supports a distinct 1914 invisible-return doctrine; this curriculum’s আগমন same-word design must never drift toward that rendering.
- Structural echo risk between “Son of Destruction” and “Son of God”: the single highest-stakes phrase-level risk in the book — right words, dangerously adjacent configuration — requiring a mandatory translator note at every occurrence, not a lexical fix.
- Fragile two-word power partition: সামর্থ্য (God’s power) and পরাক্রম (Satan’s power) must never cross, yet Bengali’s compounding flexibility makes an accidental slip easy during high-volume batch processing.
- Shakta/Vaishnava cultural resonance: শক্তি (forbidden for both God’s and Satan’s power, doubly so for Satan’s given West Bengal’s Durga/Kali devotional heartland) and প্রেম (retained despite strong Radha-Krishna bhakti “prema” resonance) both require sustained vigilance, not one-time fixes.
Opportunities
- Precedent-setting terminology for future Pauline curricula: the আগমন same-word parousia design, the সামর্থ্য/পরাক্রম divine-power partition, and the শিক্ষা-not-পরম্পরা traditions fencing are all reusable, higher-fidelity improvements over existing mainstream Bengali Bible precedent (which typically flattens the restrainer’s grammatical gender shift and varies parousia’s rendering inconsistently) — this package can become the reference standard for 1 Thessalonians and other eschatological NT books in this language pair.
- YouVersion citation infrastructure now specified: the
2TH.{chapter}.{verse}USFM pattern and deep-link construction method are locked and ready for immediate Phase 2 use once the version ID is confirmed. - Comparative-theology teaching assets already produced: the Bengali-context-specific comparative theology survey (Islamic Dajjal/Qiyamah, Hindu Shakta/Vaishnava frameworks) can be repurposed directly into discipleship-level teaching notes for pastors working with mixed Hindu-background/Muslim-background congregations.
Recommended actions
- Lock
assets/translation_memory.json(this deliverable) as the enforced Phase 2 term database; do not permit ad hoc term substitution during batch translation. - Route every segment touching 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 to mandatory human theologian review without exception, per the escalation rules in
analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md. - Add কর্মফল and পরম্পরা to the automated forbidden-substitution validation check, alongside the Romans baseline’s existing forbidden list.
- Implement the automated অনন্ত+বিনাশ co-occurrence check and the সামর্থ্য/পরাক্রম cross-contamination check as mechanical Phase 2 batch-processing safeguards before Step 17 doctrinal fidelity review.
- Confirm the YouVersion numeric version ID for the Bangladesh Bible Society / Bible Society of India Common Language Bengali edition before publishing any Phase 2 hyperlink; use the
{VERSION_ID}placeholder until confirmed.
