Semantic Analysis
07 Semantic Analysis — Jude (Koine Greek → Bengali)
Overview
The Letter of Jude is a single-chapter, 25-verse epistle (no chapter divisions beyond Jude 1). Per the PRD full-book coverage mandate, “every chapter first to last” for Jude means the entirety of Jude 1:1–25. The assigned core passage (Jude 1:3–23) receives full verse-by-verse treatment below. The framing verses outside the core passage — the salutation (1:1–2) and the closing doxology (1:24–25) — receive the same field-by-field rigor in a dedicated section afterward, so that this document spans the complete book with no silent omissions.
Jude is doctrinally dense for its length: it warns against false teachers using three Old Testament/intertestamental “type” examples (Israel in the wilderness, the fallen angels, Sodom and Gomorrah), quotes non-canonical material (1 Enoch) as containing a true prophetic utterance, and closes with one of the NT’s most quoted doxologies on God’s preserving power. Several Greek terms recur across the letter as deliberate verbal threads (τηρέω “keep,” πλάνη/πλανήτης “error/wanderer,” σπιλάς/σπιλόω “stain,” ἀσεβής “ungodly”) — translators must render these consistently in Bengali to preserve Jude’s rhetorical structure.
Terms already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json are marked [TM REUSE] and MUST use the identical recorded Bengali rendering. New terms established here for Jude are marked [NEW] and are risk-tiered using the same Critical/High/Medium/Low framework as the baseline.
PART A — Core Passage Verse-by-Verse Analysis: Jude 1:3–23
Jude 1:3
Greek: Ἀγαπητοί, πᾶσαν σπουδὴν ποιούμενος γράφειν ὑμῖν περὶ τῆς κοινῆς ἡμῶν σωτηρίας ἀνάγκην ἔσχον γράψαι ὑμῖν παρακαλῶν ἐπαγωνίζεσθαι τῇ ἅπαξ παραδοθείσῃ τοῖς ἁγίοις πίστει.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγαπητοί | agapētoi | ”beloved ones” | term of affectionate pastoral address | ”beloved,” “dear friends” | Establishes relational warmth before a warning letter — the rebuke that follows is pastoral, not hostile. | [NEW] প্রিয়গণ / প্রিয়তমেরা. Risk: Medium. Must not read as merely polite formality; carries covenant-family affection. |
| σωτηρία | sōtēria | ”deliverance, rescue” | salvation (soteriological), rescue from danger (general) | “salvation" | "Our common salvation” — σωτηρία shared by writer and readers alike, grounding the appeal to defend it. | [TM REUSE] পরিত্রাণ. Risk: Critical (per baseline). Never মুক্তি/মোক্ষ/নাজাত. |
| ἐπαγωνίζομαι | epagōnizomai | ”to struggle upon/intensely for,” from ἀγών (athletic contest, struggle) | vigorous, strenuous contending; a compound intensifying ἀγωνίζομαι | ”contend for,” “fight earnestly for,” “strive for” | The core doctrinal imperative of the letter: an active, effortful defense of revealed truth against corrupting infiltrators — not passive assent or private piety. | [NEW] প্রাণপণে সংগ্রাম করা (to strive/struggle with all one’s strength). Risk: Critical. Must not be softened to “believe firmly” or “support”; this is the doctrine “Contending for the Faith Once Delivered.” A weak verb here undercuts the letter’s entire rhetorical force. |
| ἅπαξ | hapax | ”once,” “once for all” | a single, unrepeatable, completed event (contrast with πολλάκις, “often”) | “once for all,” “once,” “at one time” | Modifies παραδοθείσῃ: the faith was delivered in a single, closed, completed act — not an ongoing or evolving revelation. | [NEW] একবারের জন্য (চিরকালের জন্য একবার প্রদত্ত). Risk: High. Theologically load-bearing: guards the finality/closedness of apostolic doctrine against (a) a Hindu-adjacent notion of ever-unfolding revelation/avatars, and (b) any reading implying doctrine is negotiable or supplementable. |
| παραδίδωμι (παραδοθείσῃ) | paradotheisē | ”having been handed over/delivered/entrusted” | to hand down a tradition, to entrust, to hand over (also used for betrayal in other contexts) | “delivered,” “entrusted,” “handed down” | The faith is a fixed deposit transmitted from God through the apostles to the church, not a personal discovery each generation reinvents. | [NEW] সমর্পিত/অর্পিত (হয়েছে). Risk: High. Pairs with ἅπαξ to establish a closed apostolic deposit. |
| ἅγιοι | hagioi | ”holy ones” | corporate designation for all believers | ”saints,” “holy ones” | The recipients of the entrusted faith are ordinary believers, not an ascetic elite. | [TM REUSE] পবিত্র লোক. Risk: High (per baseline). Never সাধু/সাধুগণ. |
| πίστις (τῇ … πίστει) | pistei | ”the faith” | HERE: the objective body of apostolic doctrine/content believed, NOT personal trusting-in (contrast with πίστις as subjective trust elsewhere in the NT, e.g. Romans) | “the faith,” “the faith once delivered,” “the doctrine” | A crucial semantic-range shift from Romans’ usage: this is “the faith” as a deposit of teaching to be defended, not “faith” as the act of trusting Christ. | [TM REUSE with contextual flag] বিশ্বাস. Risk: High. বিশ্বাস in Bengali defaults to the act/state of believing; readers may miss that this verse means the body of doctrine. A translator note is required: “here বিশ্বাস = প্রেরিত শিক্ষার সম্পূর্ণ বিষয়বস্তু, ব্যক্তিগত আস্থার কাজ নয়” (here ‘faith’ = the whole content of apostolic teaching, not the personal act of trusting). |
Jude 1:4
Greek: παρεισέδυσαν γάρ τινες ἄνθρωποι, οἱ πάλαι προγεγραμμένοι εἰς τοῦτο τὸ κρίμα, ἀσεβεῖς, τὴν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν χάριν μετατιθέντες εἰς ἀσέλγειαν καὶ τὸν μόνον δεσπότην καὶ κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν Χριστὸν ἀρνούμενοι.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| παρεισδύω (παρεισέδυσαν) | pareisedysan | ”to slip in secretly alongside” | covert infiltration | ”crept in unnoticed,” “slipped in” | False teachers did not openly declare themselves; they infiltrated the community under cover. | [NEW] গোপনে প্রবেশ করেছে/অনুপ্রবেশ করেছে. Risk: Medium. |
| κρίμα | krima | ”judgment, verdict, sentence” | a legal/divine verdict, either the act of judging or the sentence itself | ”judgment,” “condemnation” | These teachers were “marked out beforehand” for this specific judgment — links to the doctrine of Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers. | [NEW] বিচার/দণ্ড. Risk: High. Must convey a personal divine legal verdict, not an impersonal karmic outcome accruing automatically from past deeds. |
| ἀσεβής (ἀσεβεῖς) | asebeis | ”impious, irreverent toward God” | lack of reverence/piety toward God specifically (distinct from ἄδικος, “unjust,” which concerns human relations) | “ungodly,” “impious” | Central descriptor of the false teachers throughout Jude (vv.4, 15, 18) — the letter’s core polemical term. | [NEW] ঈশ্বরহীন (ঈশ্বরহীনতা for the noun). Risk: High. Deliberately avoids both ধর্ম-rooted terms (which the baseline forbids for righteousness/law) and ভক্তি-rooted terms (which carry strong Bengali Vaishnava bhakti-devotion associations); ঈশ্বরহীন keeps the focus squarely on irreverence toward the true God. |
| χάρις | charis | ”grace” | unmerited favor | ”grace” | The false teachers pervert God’s grace into a license for immorality — the direct opposite of grace’s proper fruit. | [TM REUSE] অনুগ্রহ. Risk: High (per baseline). This is the grace-versus-license contrast the baseline flags for careful preservation. |
| ἀσέλγεια | aselgeia | ”unrestrained sensual indulgence, licentiousness” | moral abandon, especially sexual, without shame or restraint | ”sensuality,” “licentiousness,” “debauchery” | The false teachers weaponize grace as a pretext for total moral abandon. | [NEW] স্বেচ্ছাচারিতা. Risk: Medium. |
| δεσπότης | despotēs | ”master, absolute sovereign owner” | supreme ownership-authority (distinct from κύριος, which emphasizes lordship/rule); paired here with κύριος as a doublet | ”Master,” “Sovereign Lord,” “only Sovereign” | Emphasizes Christ’s absolute, exclusive sovereign ownership — being denied by the false teachers. | [NEW] অধিপতি. Risk: High. Directly implicated in the Critical doctrine “Judgment on Ungodly False Teachers” and touches “Lordship of Christ” (already Critical in the baseline registry) since δεσπότης and κύριος together describe the very Lordship being denied. |
| κύριος | kyrios | ”Lord” | exclusive supreme authority | ”Lord” | Reused exactly as in Romans; here paired with δεσπότης to intensify the exclusivity being denied. | [TM REUSE] প্রভু. Risk: Critical (per baseline). |
| ἀρνέομαι (ἀρνούμενοι) | arnoumenoi | ”denying, disowning” | to refuse to acknowledge, to repudiate | ”deny,” “disown,” “repudiate” | The false teachers’ functional denial of Christ’s Lordship, likely through immoral practice rather than verbal creed. | [NEW] অস্বীকার করা. Risk: High, given its direct connection to the Critical doctrine of Christ’s Lordship. |
Jude 1:5
Greek: Ὑπομνῆσαι δὲ ὑμᾶς βούλομαι, εἰδότας ὑμᾶς πάντα, ὅτι Ἰησοῦς, ὁ κύριος ἅπαξ σώσας τὸν λαὸν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, τὸ δεύτερον τοὺς μὴ πιστεύσαντας ἀπώλεσεν,
Textual note: A well-known textual variant exists at this verse: some early manuscripts read Ἰησοῦς (“Jesus”) as the subject who saved the people out of Egypt, while others read (ὁ) κύριος (“the Lord”) or ὁ θεός (“God”). The Ἰησοῦς reading (adopted by NA28/most modern critical editions) is theologically striking: it attributes the Exodus deliverance to the pre-incarnate Christ. This must be flagged for human theologian review regardless of which base text the Bengali translation follows, given its direct bearing on the Deity/pre-existence of Christ.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ἰησοῦς | Iēsous | ”Jesus” | proper name | ”Jesus” | If original, identifies Jesus as the agent of the Exodus deliverance — a strong pre-existence/deity claim. | [TM REUSE] যীশু. Risk: Critical. Flag for theologian review given the textual-variant/pre-existence implication. |
| σῴζω (σώσας) | sōsas | ”having saved/rescued” | general rescue/deliverance from danger (here historical-physical, not the ultimate soteriological sense) | “saved,” “delivered,” “rescued” | The Exodus rescue functions as a type: God’s past deliverance did not guarantee final safety for those who later disbelieved — a warning, not merely a comfort. | [NEW, distinct from TM noun] উদ্ধার করলেন (rescued/delivered). Risk: High. Kept distinct from the noun পরিত্রাণ (reserved for the ultimate soteriological sense) to avoid collapsing this historical type into the doctrine of final salvation itself; a translator note should mark this as a “OT Warning as Type” passage. |
| πιστεύω (πιστεύσαντας) | pisteusantas | ”having believed/trusted” | trust/reliance (verb form of πίστις) | “believed” | Failure to trust God despite having been rescued led to destruction in the wilderness — a warning paradigm for the letter’s false-teacher context. | [TM REUSE, verb form] বিশ্বাস করা (root বিশ্বাস). Risk: High (per baseline faith entry). |
| ἀπόλλυμι (ἀπώλεσεν) | apōlesen | ”destroyed” | to bring to ruin, cause to perish | ”destroyed,” “killed,” “brought to ruin” | The negative counterpart of salvation — those rescued from Egypt who did not believe were destroyed in judgment. | [NEW] বিনষ্ট করলেন. Risk: Medium. Same root recurs in v.11 (ἀπώλοντο, “perished”) — render consistently to preserve the verbal link. |
Jude 1:6
Greek: ἀγγέλους τε τοὺς μὴ τηρήσαντας τὴν ἑαυτῶν ἀρχὴν ἀλλὰ ἀπολιπόντας τὸ ἴδιον οἰκητήριον εἰς κρίσιν μεγάλης ἡμέρας δεσμοῖς ἀιδίοις ὑπὸ ζόφον τετήρηκεν·
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄγγελος (ἀγγέλους) | angelous | ”messengers” | heavenly messenger-beings (angels) | “angels” | The second OT/intertestamental type: angels who rebelled are already held for judgment. | [NEW] স্বর্গদূত. Risk: Medium. Distinct usage from generic “messenger” (rejected as an “apostle” alternative in the baseline); here it correctly denotes heavenly beings. |
| τηρέω (μὴ τηρήσαντας / τετήρηκεν) | tērēsantas / tetērēken | ”to keep, guard, watch over, preserve” | (1) to keep/maintain a position or state faithfully; (2) to keep/hold someone in custody/detention | ”kept,” “did not keep,” “has kept” | KEY WORDPLAY: the SAME Greek verb τηρέω describes the angels’ failure to “keep” their proper position AND God’s action in “keeping” them in chains for judgment — a deliberate irony. This verb recurs in vv.1, 13, 21, 24 (v.24 uses the related φυλάσσω) forming the letter’s central “keeping” motif tied to the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.” | [NEW] রক্ষা করা / রক্ষিত রাখা. Risk: High. Bengali should use the SAME root consistently across all τηρέω occurrences (v.1 “kept for Jesus Christ,” v.6 “did not keep their own position” / “has kept them in chains,” v.13, v.21 “keep yourselves”) to preserve Jude’s wordplay; translators must not use unrelated verbs for different occurrences. |
| ἀρχή (ἀρχὴν) | archēn | ”first place, ruling position, domain, realm of authority” | (1) beginning/origin (most common NT sense); (2) rule, ruling office, domain of authority (the sense required here) | “position,” “domain,” “own place,” “rule” — NOT “beginning” | The angels abandoned their proper rank/domain of authority, not “the beginning” of anything. | [NEW] নিজ পদ/কর্তৃত্ব (own position/domain of authority). Risk: High. A literal or careless rendering as শুরু (“beginning”) would be a significant mistranslation of this clause. |
| οἰκητήριον | oikētērion | ”dwelling place, habitation” | proper abode/domain of residence | ”dwelling,” “abode,” “habitation” | The angels left their proper heavenly abode. | [NEW] নিজ বাসস্থান. Risk: Low. |
| κρίσις | krisis | ”judgment” | act of judging, the judgment event itself (paired conceptually with κρίμα in v.4, v.15) | “judgment" | "the judgment of the great day” — the final eschatological judgment awaiting these angels. | [NEW] বিচার. Risk: High, same doctrine as κρίμα above; use the same Bengali word for both κρίμα and κρίσις to preserve their shared semantic domain. |
| ἀίδιος | aidios | ”everlasting, eternal” | permanent, unending (a RARE NT word — occurs only here and Romans 1:20) | “everlasting,” “eternal” | The chains binding the fallen angels are permanent, not temporary custody awaiting release. | [NEW] চিরস্থায়ী. Risk: Medium. Note its rarity; distinct lexeme from the more common αἰώνιος (used elsewhere in Jude for “eternal fire,” “eternal life”), though near-synonymous in sense. |
| ζόφος | zophos | ”gloom, thick darkness” | deep, murky darkness (used again in v.13, intensified there as ζόφος τοῦ σκότους) | “gloom,” “darkness,” “blackness” | The place of confinement for judged angels — recurs in v.13 applied to the false teachers themselves. | [NEW] ঘোর অন্ধকার. Risk: Medium. |
Jude 1:7
Greek: ὡς Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα καὶ αἱ περὶ αὐτὰς πόλεις, τὸν ὅμοιον τρόπον τούτοις ἐκπορνεύσασαι καὶ ἀπελθοῦσαι ὀπίσω σαρκὸς ἑτέρας, πρόκεινται δεῖγμα πυρὸς αἰωνίου δίκην ὑπέχουσαι.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Σόδομα καὶ Γόμορρα | Sodoma kai Gomorra | proper names | Sodom and Gomorrah | ”Sodom and Gomorrah” | The third OT type: cities destroyed for grave sexual sin, held forth as an enduring warning. | [NEW] সদোম ও ঘমোরা. Risk: Low (established proper names); High doctrinal weight as a “type” passage. |
| ἐκπορνεύω (ἐκπορνεύσασαι) | ekporneusasai | ”to indulge in sexual immorality extensively” (intensive compound of πορνεύω) | severe, thoroughgoing sexual immorality | ”gave themselves to sexual immorality,” “indulged in gross immorality” | Describes the cities’ characteristic sin, paralleling the false teachers’ behavior (v.4, v.8). | [NEW] ব্যভিচার করেছিল. Risk: Medium. |
| σαρκὸς ἑτέρας | sarkos heteras | ”flesh of another/different kind” | idiom for unnatural sexual desire/pursuit; contextually tied to the Genesis 19 narrative of desire directed at heavenly visitors | ”unnatural desire,” “strange flesh,” “different flesh” | Describes the specific, unnatural character of Sodom’s sin as an OT warning-type. | [NEW] ভিন্ন প্রকৃতির মাংসের প্রতি কামনা. Risk: High. Sensitive content requiring careful, non-graphic, doctrinally faithful phrasing consistent with mainstream Bengali Christian Bible register; must preserve the doctrinal point (unnatural sin invites certain judgment) without either vulgarizing or vaguing it into a generic “immorality.” |
| δεῖγμα | deigma | ”example, sample, exhibit” | a visible example set forth as a warning | ”example,” “warning example” | Sodom and Gomorrah are held up publicly as an enduring warning-example of divine judgment — core to the “OT Warnings as Types” doctrine. | [NEW] দৃষ্টান্ত/সতর্কীকরণের নমুনা. Risk: Medium. |
| αἰώνιος (πυρὸς αἰωνίου) | aiōniou | ”eternal, age-long” | unending, without end (contrast with temporary/cyclical) | “eternal fire” | The fire of judgment on Sodom is a type/foretaste of the truly eternal fire of final judgment. | [NEW] অনন্ত (আগুন). Risk: High. Must convey final, non-repeating, non-cyclical judgment — a direct contrast with any worldview (e.g., karma/samsara) in which suffering is temporary and resolves through future rebirths. |
Jude 1:8
Greek: Ὁμοίως μέντοι καὶ οὗτοι ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι σάρκα μὲν μιαίνουσιν κυριότητα δὲ ἀθετοῦσιν δόξας δὲ βλασφημοῦσιν.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐνυπνιάζομαι | enypniazomenoi | ”to dream, to be in a dream-like/visionary state” | dreaming, often with a note of self-deluded visionary claims | ”dreaming,” “relying on dreams/visions” | The false teachers claim visionary authority for their behavior. | [NEW] স্বপ্নদর্শী হয়ে (দাবি করে). Risk: Low-Medium. |
| μιαίνω (μιαίνουσιν) | miainousin | ”to defile, pollute, stain” | moral defilement (here of the body/flesh through sin), distinct from ritual impurity | ”defile,” “pollute,” “corrupt” | Moral self-defilement through sin — care must be taken not to render this with a ritual-purity term. | [NEW] কলুষিত করে. Risk: Medium. Deliberately avoids অশুচি-root vocabulary (already flagged in the baseline as carrying Hindu ritual-purity/shuddhi connotations for “sin”). |
| κυριότης (κυριότητα) | kyriotēta | ”lordship, dominion, authority” | the state/quality of being lord/sovereign (abstract noun form of κύριος) | “authority,” “dominion,” “lordship” | The false teachers reject legitimate divine/angelic authority structures — directly related to the Lordship theme. | [NEW] প্রভুত্ব. Risk: High. Deliberately built on the same root as প্রভু (κύριος, TM) to preserve the lexical connection in Bengali, given its link to the Critical Lordship-of-Christ doctrine. |
| ἀθετέω (ἀθετοῦσιν) | athetousin | ”to reject, set aside, disregard” | to nullify, treat as invalid | ”reject,” “despise,” “set at nought” | Active rejection of legitimate authority, not mere ignorance. | [NEW] অগ্রাহ্য করে/অস্বীকার করে. Risk: Medium. |
| δόξα (δόξας, plural) | doxas | ”glories” | HERE: a concrete plural referring to glorious/exalted beings (likely angelic dignitaries), NOT the abstract quality of “glory” as elsewhere | ”glorious ones,” “celestial beings,” “dignitaries,” (some translations: “glorious ones”) | A distinct semantic-range use from the abstract δόξα (“glory,” Romans/Jude 24-25); here it denotes actual exalted beings being slandered — paralleling Michael’s restraint toward the devil in v.9. | [NEW, semantic-range flag] মহিমাময় সত্তা (glorious beings) rather than a bare abstract মহিমা. Risk: High. If rendered simply as the abstract noun মহিমা (glory, per the TM entry for the unrelated abstract sense), Bengali readers will not understand this as concrete beings being reviled; a translator note distinguishing the abstract (v.24-25) and concrete (v.8) uses is required. |
| βλασφημέω (βλασφημοῦσιν) | blasphēmousin | ”to revile, slander, blaspheme” | speaking abusively/contemptuously, whether against God (blasphemy proper) or against exalted beings generally | ”blaspheme,” “revile,” “slander” | The false teachers speak contemptuously even of angelic dignitaries, showing reckless disregard for spiritual authority. | [NEW] নিন্দা করে. Risk: Medium. Distinct from the more specific ঈশ্বরনিন্দা (“blasphemy against God”), reserved for direct blasphemy against God himself. |
Jude 1:9
Greek: ὁ δὲ Μιχαὴλ ὁ ἀρχάγγελος, ὅτε τῷ διαβόλῳ διακρινόμενος διελέγετο περὶ τοῦ Μωυσέως σώματος, οὐκ ἐτόλμησεν κρίσιν ἐπενεγκεῖν βλασφημίας, ἀλλὰ εἶπεν· ἐπιτιμήσαι σοι κύριος.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀρχάγγελος | archangelos | ”chief angel, archangel” | highest rank of angelic being | ”archangel” | Even the archangel Michael, of highest angelic rank, did not presume to revile the devil directly — a rebuke by contrast to the false teachers’ reckless irreverence. | [NEW] প্রধান স্বর্গদূত. Risk: Low. |
| διάβολος | diabolos | ”slanderer, the devil” | the personal, malevolent adversary (Satan) | “devil,” “the accuser” | The personal spiritual enemy, contending over Moses’ body (drawing on extra-biblical Jewish tradition). | [NEW] দিয়াবল/শয়তান. Risk: Medium. Must be kept as a personal malevolent being, not a vague impersonal “evil force.” |
| Μωυσῆς (Μωυσέως) | Mōuseōs | ”Moses” (genitive) | proper name | ”Moses” | Reference to extra-biblical Jewish tradition about a dispute over Moses’ burial/body. | [established proper name] মোশি (per requirements doc house-style). Risk: Low. |
| κρίσιν … βλασφημίας ἐπενεγκεῖν | krisin … blasphēmias epenegkein | ”to bring/pronounce a judgment of blasphemy/slander” | to level an accusation of reviling | ”bring a reviling accusation,” “pronounce a slanderous judgment” | Michael refrained even from a justified accusation against the devil — the contrast intensifies the false teachers’ reckless irreverence toward far lesser powers. | [NEW] নিন্দাপূর্ণ অভিযোগ আনতে (সাহস করলেন না). Risk: Medium. |
| ἐπιτιμάω (ἐπιτιμήσαι) | epitimēsai | ”to rebuke, reprimand” | authoritative reproof/command | ”rebuke” | Michael deferred the rebuke itself to the Lord’s authority rather than acting on his own. | [NEW] ধমক দিন/অনুযোগ করুন. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| κύριος | kyrios | ”Lord” | (see above) | “Lord” | Reaffirms that ultimate authority to rebuke belongs to the Lord alone. | [TM REUSE] প্রভু. Risk: Critical. |
Jude 1:10
Greek: οὗτοι δὲ ὅσα μὲν οὐκ οἴδασιν βλασφημοῦσιν, ὅσα δὲ φυσικῶς ὡς τὰ ἄλογα ζῷα ἐπίστανται, ἐν τούτοις φθείρονται.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἄλογα ζῷα | aloga zōa | ”irrational animals/creatures” | animals lacking reason/logos | ”irrational animals,” “unreasoning creatures,” “brute beasts” | The false teachers are reduced to acting on base instinct rather than reasoned understanding — a sharp rhetorical insult. | [NEW] অবোধ পশু. Risk: Medium. |
| φθείρω (φθείρονται) | phtheirontai | ”to be destroyed, corrupted, ruined” | moral corruption leading to eventual destruction | ”are destroyed,” “are corrupted,” “destroy themselves” | Their instinct-driven behavior is the very thing bringing about their ruin — moral corruption with eschatological consequence. | [NEW] বিনষ্ট হয়/স্বয়ং ধ্বংস হয়. Risk: Medium. |
Jude 1:11
Greek: οὐαὶ αὐτοῖς, ὅτι τῇ ὁδῷ τοῦ Κάϊν ἐπορεύθησαν, καὶ τῇ πλάνῃ τοῦ Βαλαὰμ μισθοῦ ἐξεχύθησαν, καὶ τῇ ἀντιλογίᾳ τοῦ Κόρε ἀπώλοντο.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| οὐαί | ouai | ”woe!“ | prophetic/pronouncement interjection of doom | ”woe,” “alas” | A formal prophetic pronouncement of coming judgment, in the tradition of OT prophetic woe-oracles. | [NEW] ধিক্. Risk: Low, but register-significant — should match the solemn prophetic-woe register used elsewhere in Bengali Bible tradition (e.g., Gospel woes), not a casual exclamation. |
| Κάϊν / Βαλαάμ / Κόρε | Kain / Balaam / Kore | proper names | Cain, Balaam, Korah | ”Cain,” “Balaam,” “Korah” | Three further OT types of rebellion against God — murder-driven jealousy (Cain), greed-driven false prophecy (Balaam), and rebellion against God-established authority (Korah). | [established/new proper names] কয়িন / বিলিয়ম / কোরহ. Risk: Low, but doctrinally load-bearing as the fourth, fifth, and sixth OT “types” in the letter (alongside Israel, angels, Sodom). |
| πλάνη | planē | ”error, deception, wandering” | moral/doctrinal error, being led astray | ”error,” “delusion,” “deceit” | Balaam’s error was pursuing deceptive, self-serving “prophecy” for reward — an OT type directly parallel to the false teachers’ greed-driven ministry. | [NEW] ভ্রান্তি. Risk: Medium. Note wordplay with πλανήτης (“wanderer,” v.13) — keep the same root in Bengali if possible to preserve the connection. |
| μισθός (μισθοῦ) | misthou | ”wage, hire, reward” | payment for service (often improperly sought) | “reward,” “hire,” “profit” | Balaam’s error was driven by desire for payment — the false teachers are similarly profit-driven (cf. v.16). | [NEW] মজুরি/লাভের জন্য. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ἀντιλογία | antilogia | ”contradiction, dispute, rebellion” | verbal opposition/rebellion against established authority | ”rebellion,” “contradiction,” “defiance” | Korah’s rebellion against Moses’ God-given authority — a type of rebellion against legitimate spiritual authority. | [NEW] বিরোধিতা/বিদ্রোহ. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀπόλλυμι (ἀπώλοντο) | apōlonto | ”perished” | (same root as v.5 ἀπώλεσεν) | “perished,” “were destroyed” | Ties back verbally to v.5’s warning about the wilderness generation who perished for unbelief. | [NEW, consistent with v.5] বিনষ্ট হলো. Risk: Medium — render with the same root as v.5 to preserve the verbal echo. |
Jude 1:12
Greek: οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἐν ταῖς ἀγάπαις ὑμῶν σπιλάδες συνευωχούμενοι ἀφόβως, ἑαυτοὺς ποιμαίνοντες, νεφέλαι ἄνυδροι ὑπὸ ἀνέμων παραφερόμεναι, δένδρα φθινοπωρινὰ ἄκαρπα δὶς ἀποθανόντα ἐκριζωθέντα,
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀγάπαι (ταῖς ἀγάπαις) | agapais | ”love feasts” | HERE: a concrete institutional referent to the early church’s communal fellowship meals, distinct from the abstract “love” (ἀγάπη) of v.2, v.21 | ”love feasts,” “fellowship meals,” “communal meals” | The false teachers had infiltrated the church’s most intimate communal gatherings, feasting without shame or reverence. | [NEW, distinct sense from v.2 ἀγάπη] প্রেম-ভোজ / সহভোজ. Risk: Medium. Requires a translator note distinguishing this concrete institutional sense from the abstract love-term used elsewhere in the letter. |
| σπιλάς (σπιλάδες) | spilades | ”hidden reefs” OR “stains/blemishes” | genuine lexical ambiguity: σπιλάς can mean a submerged rock dangerous to ships, OR (by association with the related σπίλος) a moral stain/blemish | ”hidden reefs,” “blemishes,” “stains” (both readings attested in major translations) | Either reading fits the warning context: dangerous hidden hazards within the fellowship, or moral stains upon it. | [NEW, semantic-ambiguity flag] গুপ্ত বিপদজনক পাথর (hidden dangerous rock/reef) OR কলঙ্ক/দাগ (stain/blemish). Risk: Medium. Recommend the “reef” reading (paired imagery with the sea metaphor of v.13) but flag both options for native-speaker/theologian review. Note also the wordplay with σπιλόω (“stain,” v.23) if the “stain” reading is chosen. |
| ἀφόβως | aphobōs | ”fearlessly, without fear/reverence” | absence of proper reverential caution | ”fearlessly,” “without shame,” “without reverence” | The false teachers feast without any reverential restraint — a marked contrast to the “fear” (φόβος) commended in v.23. | [NEW] নির্ভয়ে/নির্লজ্জভাবে. Risk: Medium. |
| ποιμαίνω (ποιμαίνοντες) | poimainontes | ”shepherding” | pastoral care/leadership metaphor | ”shepherding,” “tending,” “pastoring" | "Shepherding only themselves” — a biting critique of self-serving leadership that neglects the flock, directly relevant to false-teacher accountability. | [NEW] পালন করা (নিজেদের পালন করে). Risk: Medium. |
| ἄκαρπος | akarpos | ”fruitless, unfruitful” | lacking good fruit/results | ”fruitless,” “barren” | The false teachers produce no genuine spiritual fruit despite appearances — echoes the broader NT “good fruit” theme. | [NEW] নিষ্ফল. Risk: Medium. |
Jude 1:13
Greek: κύματα ἄγρια θαλάσσης ἐπαφρίζοντα τὰς ἑαυτῶν αἰσχύνας, ἀστέρες πλανῆται οἷς ὁ ζόφος τοῦ σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα τετήρηται.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| αἰσχύνη (αἰσχύνας) | aischynas | ”shame, disgrace” | shameful deeds/disgraceful conduct made publicly visible | ”shame,” “shameful deeds,” “disgrace” | Their sin is compared to sea-foam — the visible, ugly by-product of their own shameful conduct, publicly exposed. | [NEW] লজ্জাজনক কাজ/কলঙ্ক. Risk: Medium. Honor/shame dynamics are unusually salient in Bengali culture (per baseline flags); ensure the rendering conveys public moral disgrace, not mere private embarrassment. |
| πλανήτης (πλανῆται) | planētai | ”wanderer” | one who wanders off course (root shared with πλάνη, “error,” v.11) | “wandering stars,” “wandering,” “straying” | Wordplay: those who lead others into πλάνη (error, v.11) are themselves πλανῆται (wanderers) — stars that give no reliable light for navigation, a fitting image for false teachers. | [NEW] উদ্ভ্রান্ত তারা (wandering/erratic stars). Risk: Medium. Preserve the root connection with πλάνη in v.11 where possible. |
| ζόφος τοῦ σκότους | zophos tou skotous | ”gloom of the darkness” | intensified doubling of near-synonyms (ζόφος + σκότος) for maximal darkness | ”blackest darkness,” “utter darkness,” “gloom of darkness” | Echoes v.6’s ζόφος (used of the fallen angels) — the same ultimate darkness awaits the false teachers. | [NEW] ঘোর অন্ধকার (intensified). Risk: Medium — should echo the v.6 rendering of ζόφος to preserve the deliberate verbal link. |
| αἰών (εἰς αἰῶνα) | aiōna | ”age, eternity” | a period/the totality of time; “forever" | "forever,” “for all ages” | The darkness reserved for them is permanent, not temporary confinement. | [NEW] অনন্তকাল/চিরকাল. Risk: Medium; conceptually paired with αἰώνιος (v.7, v.21) though a distinct lexical form. |
| τηρέω (τετήρηται) | tetērētai | ”has been kept/reserved” | (same verb as vv.1, 6, 21, forming the letter’s keeping-motif) | “has been reserved,” “is kept” | The gloom itself is “kept” (τηρέω) for them — the SAME verb used positively of believers being “kept for Jesus Christ” (v.1) and of believers “keeping” themselves in God’s love (v.21). This is the darkest turn of Jude’s keeping wordplay. | [NEW, consistent with vv.1/6/21] রক্ষিত/রাখা হয়েছে. Risk: High — must use the same root as the other τηρέω occurrences to preserve this central and unsettling wordplay. |
Jude 1:14–15
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| προφητεύω (προεφήτευσεν) | proephēteusen | ”prophesied” | delivering a God-inspired declaration | ”prophesied” | MAJOR NOTE: Jude here cites material from the non-canonical Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 1:9) as a true prophetic utterance. This does NOT elevate 1 Enoch as a whole to canonical/inspired Scripture; Jude affirms the truth of this specific saying without endorsing the entire work’s authority. This distinction is essential for the doctrine of the inspiration/canon of Scripture and MUST be preserved in any teaching notes accompanying the translation. | [TM REUSE, verb form] ভাববাণী করলেন (root: ভাববাণী, TM). Risk: High. Requires a mandatory translator/theologian note clarifying the non-canonical source, given real risk of confusion about the boundaries of the biblical canon — especially important in a region where readers may also be weighing claims about other extra-scriptural “revealed” texts. |
| Ἐνώχ / Ἀδάμ | Henōch / Adam | proper names | Enoch, Adam | ”Enoch,” “Adam” | Enoch is identified by his genealogical position (“seventh from Adam,” per Genesis 5), grounding the citation historically within the biblical genealogy even though the quoted text itself is extra-canonical. | [established proper names] হনোক / আদম. Risk: Low-Medium (see canon note above for the surrounding claim). |
| κύριος (ἦλθεν κύριος) | kyrios | ”Lord” | (see above) | “the Lord” | The prophecy anticipates the Lord’s future coming in judgment, accompanied by his holy ones — an eschatological Lordship/judgment claim. | [TM REUSE] প্রভু. Risk: Critical. |
| ἅγιαι μυριάδες | hagiai myriades | ”holy myriads/ten-thousands” | a vast host, here of holy angels/beings accompanying the Lord | ”holy myriads,” “ten thousands of his holy ones” | Depicts the Lord’s future coming in judgment escorted by a vast angelic host — reinforces divine authority and inevitability of judgment. | [NEW] পবিত্র বহু সহস্র/অযুত অযুত পবিত্রজন. Risk: Medium; ἅγιος reuses পবিত্র [TM]. |
| κρίσις | krisis | ”judgment” | (see v.6) | “judgment” | The purpose of the Lord’s coming: to execute judgment on all. | [NEW, consistent with v.6] বিচার. Risk: High. |
| ἐλέγχω (ἐλέγξαι) | elegxai | ”to convict, expose, reprove” | bringing wrongdoing to light and pronouncing guilt | ”convict,” “expose,” “reprove” | The judgment includes public exposure and conviction of specific ungodly deeds and words. | [NEW] দোষী প্রমাণ করা/প্রকাশ করা. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀσεβής / ἀσέβεια (multiple forms) | asebeis / asebeias / ēsebēsan | ”ungodly / ungodliness / have acted ungodly” | (see v.4) | “ungodly,” “ungodliness,” “godless deeds” | The passage piles up forms of the same root five times in one sentence for rhetorical emphasis — the letter’s central polemical term reaching its climax. | [NEW, consistent with v.4] ঈশ্বরহীন/ঈশ্বরহীনতা (multiple derived forms). Risk: High. Bengali should similarly reuse a single consistent root across all forms to preserve the rhetorical intensification. |
| ἁμαρτωλός (ἁμαρτωλοὶ) | hamartōloi | ”sinners” | one characterized by ἁμαρτία, “sin" | "sinners” | Combined with ἀσεβεῖς for maximal condemnation: “sinful, ungodly ones.” | [derived from TM sin=পাপ] পাপী. Risk: Medium. |
Jude 1:16
Greek: Οὗτοί εἰσιν γογγυσταί, μεμψίμοιροι, κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας αὑτῶν πορευόμενοι, καὶ τὸ στόμα αὐτῶν λαλεῖ ὑπέρογκα, θαυμάζοντες πρόσωπα ὠφελείας χάριν.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| γογγυστής (γογγυσταί) | goggystai | ”grumblers” | chronic complainers (echoes the wilderness generation’s grumbling, tying back to v.5) | “grumblers,” “complainers” | Deliberately echoes Israel’s wilderness grumbling — another link back to the first OT type (v.5). | [NEW] অভিযোগকারী. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| μεμψίμοιρος (μεμψίμοιροι) | mempsimoiroi | ”malcontent, fault-finder about one’s lot” | chronic dissatisfaction with one’s circumstances | ”malcontents,” “fault-finders” | Reinforces the picture of chronic ingratitude and self-focus. | [NEW] অসন্তুষ্ট ব্যক্তি. Risk: Low. |
| ἐπιθυμία (ἐπιθυμίας) | epithymias | ”desire, lust, craving” | can be neutral (“desire”) or (as here) negative, self-indulgent craving | ”desires,” “lusts,” “cravings” | The false teachers are driven by self-serving appetite rather than truth or love for the flock. | [NEW] অভিলাষ/কামনা (এখানে: আত্মকেন্দ্রিক লালসা). Risk: Medium. |
| ὑπέρογκος (ὑπέρογκα) | hyperogka | ”bombastic, swelling, arrogant” (lit. “over-sized”) | inflated, boastful speech | ”bombastic words,” “great swelling words,” “arrogant boasts” | Their rhetoric is grandiose and self-aggrandizing rather than substantively true. | [NEW] অহংকারপূর্ণ বড় বড় কথা. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| θαυμάζω πρόσωπα (idiom) | thaumazontes prosōpa | lit. “admiring/marveling at faces” | Semitic idiom for flattery/partiality — showing favoritism for personal gain | ”flattering people,” “showing favoritism,” “toadying” | Their flattery is transactionally self-serving (“for the sake of advantage”), not genuine relational honor. | [NEW, idiom-handling flag] তোষামোদ করা (লাভের আশায়). Risk: Medium. The literal Greek idiom must NOT be translated word-for-word (“admire faces”) in Bengali, per the idiom-handling instructions; the meaning (flattery for gain) must be conveyed plainly. |
Jude 1:17–18
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος (ἀποστόλων) | apostolōn | ”apostles” | authorized, sent messengers with delegated apostolic authority | ”apostles” | Jude appeals to established apostolic teaching (likely oral or written) predicting the rise of scoffers — grounding the warning in prior apostolic authority, not Jude’s private opinion. | [TM REUSE] প্রেরিত. Risk: Medium (per baseline). |
| ἔσχατος χρόνος | eschatou chronou | ”last time” | the final eschatological period preceding Christ’s return | ”last time,” “last days” | Places the rise of scoffers within the church’s expected eschatological experience — not a surprising anomaly but a predicted feature of the last days. | [NEW] শেষকাল. Risk: Medium — eschatological term requiring consistent usage with other “last days” language elsewhere in the curriculum. |
| ἐμπαίκτης (ἐμπαῖκται) | empaiktai | ”mockers, scoffers” | those who deride/ridicule, especially sacred things | ”mockers,” “scoffers” | The predicted false teachers are characterized specifically as mockers of sacred truth. | [NEW] বিদ্রূপকারী/ঠাট্টাকারী. Risk: Medium. |
| ἀσέβεια (ἀσεβειῶν) | asebeiōn | ”ungodliness” | (see v.4, v.15) | “ungodly passions,” “ungodliness” | Continues the letter’s central polemical term. | [NEW, consistent with v.4] ঈশ্বরহীনতা. Risk: High. |
Jude 1:19
Greek: Οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ ἀποδιορίζοντες, ψυχικοί, πνεῦμα μὴ ἔχοντες.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀποδιορίζω (ἀποδιορίζοντες) | apodiorizontes | ”to mark off, cause divisions/separations” | causing schism, creating factional divisions within the church | ”those who cause divisions,” “those who separate themselves,” “schismatics” | Identifies the false teachers as a source of destructive division within the believing community — an implicit church-unity concern. | [NEW] বিভেদ সৃষ্টিকারী. Risk: High. This is a strong charge relevant to church discipline/unity teaching and must not be softened to something as mild as “those who differ.” |
| ψυχικός (ψυχικοί) | psychikoi | ”soulish, natural” | governed by the natural human soul/life-force (ψυχή) rather than by God’s Spirit; a technical term contrasted elsewhere in the NT with πνευματικός (“spiritual,” 1 Cor 2:14, 15:44) | “worldly,” “unspiritual,” “natural,” “merely human” | The false teachers are NOT genuinely Spirit-indwelt believers, despite outward participation in the community’s fellowship meals — a sober diagnostic claim. | [NEW] অনাত্মিক (built on the established root আত্মিক, “Spirit-given,” from the baseline’s spiritual_gifts entry, negated). Risk: High. Must not be rendered merely as “psychological” or “emotional”; the point is the absence of the (Holy) Spirit’s indwelling, distinguishing genuine believers from imposters. |
| πνεῦμα (μὴ ἔχοντες) | pneuma | ”spirit” | HERE: the (Holy) Spirit of God (bare πνεῦμα referring contextually to God’s Spirit, per common NT convention, cf. Romans 8:9) | “the Spirit,” “God’s Spirit” | These teachers lack the indwelling Spirit of God altogether — the ultimate diagnostic of their spiritual status. | [TM REUSE-adjacent] পবিত্র আত্মা-শূন্য / আত্মা নেই (referring to the Holy Spirit despite the bare Greek form). Risk: High. Must not be rendered as a generic “spirit,” “life-force,” or “soul” (which would risk resonance with impersonal Hindu ātman/prāṇa concepts); a translator note clarifying that bare πνεῦμα here means God’s Holy Spirit is recommended. |
Jude 1:20
Greek: Ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀγαπητοί, τῇ ἁγιωτάτῃ ὑμῶν πίστει ἐποικοδομοῦντες ἑαυτούς, ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ προσευχόμενοι,
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἁγιώτατος (ἁγιωτάτῃ) | hagiōtatē | ”most holy” (superlative of ἅγιος) | the highest degree of holiness/set-apartness, here modifying “faith" | "most holy faith” | The apostolic “faith” (the doctrinal deposit, cf. v.3) is described as supremely holy — believers are to build their lives on this sure foundation in contrast to the false teachers. | [TM REUSE, superlative form] পরম পবিত্র (built on পবিত্র, TM). Risk: High. |
| πίστις | pistis | ”the faith” | (same objective sense as v.3 — the doctrinal deposit) | “faith,” “the faith” | Reaffirms the objective apostolic deposit as the foundation for spiritual building-up, echoing v.3. | [TM REUSE, contextual flag as in v.3] বিশ্বাস. Risk: High. |
| ἐποικοδομέω (ἐποικοδομοῦντες) | epoikodomountes | ”building up upon” | constructive spiritual growth, using a foundation-building metaphor | ”building yourselves up,” “building up” | Positive counterpart to the false teachers’ destructive divisiveness (v.19) — believers build each other up on the true foundation. | [NEW, ties to baseline mutual_edification doctrine] গেঁথে তোলা/উন্নতিসাধন করা. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| πνεῦμα ἅγιον | pneuma hagion | ”Holy Spirit” | (full explicit form, contrast with the bare πνεῦμα of v.19) | “Holy Spirit” | Genuine believers pray “in” the Holy Spirit — the explicit contrast with the Spirit-less false teachers of v.19. | [TM REUSE] পবিত্র আত্মা. Risk: Critical. |
Jude 1:21
Greek: ἑαυτοὺς ἐν ἀγάπῃ θεοῦ τηρήσατε, προσδεχόμενοι τὸ ἔλεος τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| τηρέω (τηρήσατε) | tērēsate | ”keep!” (imperative) | (see vv.1, 6, 13) | “keep yourselves” | The letter’s central “keeping” motif turns here into a direct imperative to believers — human responsibility working alongside divine keeping (v.1, v.24). Jude holds both together: God keeps believers, and believers are commanded to keep themselves in God’s love. | [NEW, consistent with vv.1/6/13] রক্ষা করো/রাখো. Risk: High — must use the same root as other τηρέω occurrences to preserve the wordplay, and a translator note explaining the divine-human “keeping” tension (both God keeps and believers are told to keep themselves) is recommended for the doctrine “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.” |
| ἀγάπη θεοῦ | agapē theou | ”love of God” | (see v.2) | “the love of God” | Believers are to remain within the sphere of God’s love, in contrast to the false teachers who have strayed from it. | [NEW, consistent with v.2] ঈশ্বরের প্রেম. Risk: High. |
| προσδέχομαι (προσδεχόμενοι) | prosdechomenoi | ”awaiting, expecting” | eager, confident anticipation | ”waiting for,” “looking for,” “awaiting” | Believers actively and hopefully await Christ’s mercy at his return — an eschatologically oriented posture, not passive resignation. | [NEW] প্রত্যাশায় থাকা/অপেক্ষা করা. Risk: Low-Medium. |
| ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy” | (see v.2) | “mercy” | The consummating mercy of Christ at his return brings believers into eternal life — mercy as the capstone of the “Mercy and Rescue” doctrine. | [NEW, consistent with v.2] দয়া. Risk: High. |
| ζωὴ αἰώνιος | zōē aiōnios | ”eternal life” | unending life in fellowship with God (contrast with mere biological life or a cyclical existence) | “eternal life” | The ultimate goal toward which believers are kept — life without end in God’s presence. | [NEW] অনন্ত জীবন. Risk: High. Must not be diluted into a vague “good afterlife”; conveys definite, unending, personal fellowship with God, distinct from any cyclical notion of existence. |
Jude 1:22–23
Greek: καὶ οὕς μὲν ἐλεᾶτε διακρινομένους, οὕς δὲ σῴζετε ἐκ πυρὸς ἁρπάζοντες, οὕς δὲ ἐλεᾶτε ἐν φόβῳ, μισοῦντες καὶ τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς σαρκὸς ἐσπιλωμένον χιτῶνα.
Textual note: Ancient manuscripts diverge over whether this passage describes two groups or three, and over the exact verb assigned to each clause (ἐλεᾶτε “have mercy on” vs. ἐλέγχετε “reprove” in some witnesses for the first group). The rendering above follows the widely-used three-group structure (those doubting; those to be snatched from the fire; those shown mercy with fear) found in NA28 and most modern translations. This variant should be flagged for theologian review since it affects the precise pastoral instruction given for engaging wavering believers — directly relevant to the doctrine “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering.”
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐλεέω (ἐλεᾶτε) | eleate | ”have mercy on, show mercy to” | (verb form of ἔλεος) | “have mercy on,” “be merciful to” | The believing community is called to actively extend mercy toward those wavering under the false teachers’ influence — the doctrinal center of “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering.” | [NEW, verb form of ἔλεος] দয়া করো/দয়া দেখাও. Risk: High. |
| διακρίνομαι (διακρινομένους) | diakrinomenous | ”to waver, doubt, dispute within oneself” | inner uncertainty, being caught between conviction and doubt | ”those who doubt,” “those who are wavering,” “those who dispute” | Identifies a specific pastoral category: not hardened false teachers themselves, but believers destabilized by their influence, who need compassionate rescue rather than harsh condemnation. | [NEW] দ্বিধাগ্রস্ত/সন্দিহান. Risk: High. Central to the named curriculum doctrine “Mercy and Rescue of the Wavering” — must convey genuine inner uncertainty deserving compassion, not settled apostasy deserving only judgment. |
| σῴζω (σῴζετε) | sōzete | ”save! rescue!” (imperative) | urgent, active rescue | ”save,” “snatch to safety” | An urgent, hands-on rescue image, distinct from the settled doctrinal noun πরিত্রাণ though drawing on the same root concept. | [NEW, verb echoing TM salvation root] উদ্ধার করো. Risk: High. |
| ἁρπάζω (ἁρπάζοντες) | harpazontes | ”snatching, seizing forcefully” | forceful, urgent removal from danger | ”snatching,” “pulling out” | Vivid imagery of urgent, forceful rescue “from the fire” — echoes the eschatological fire imagery of v.7. | [NEW] ছোঁ মেরে (আগুন থেকে) তুলে আনা. Risk: Medium. |
| φόβος (ἐν φόβῳ) | phobōi | ”fear” | HERE: cautious reverential care/self-watchfulness in ministering to compromised individuals, not terror | ”with fear,” “with caution,” “with reverent care” | Mercy toward the compromised must be exercised with sober self-caution, guarding against being pulled into their sin oneself. | [NEW] সতর্কতাপূর্ণ ভয়/সম্ভ্রম সহকারে. Risk: Medium. |
| σπιλόω (ἐσπιλωμένον) | espilōmenon | ”stained, defiled” | moral defilement (verb form related to σπιλάς, v.12, if the “stain” reading is followed there) | “stained,” “defiled,” “polluted” | Even the “garment” associated with the sinner’s flesh is to be regarded with abhorrence — a vivid image of avoiding contamination while still rescuing the person. | [NEW, possible wordplay with v.12] কলুষিত/দাগযুক্ত. Risk: Medium. |
| χιτών (χιτῶνα) | chitōna | ”tunic, garment” | an inner garment worn next to the skin | ”garment,” “tunic,” “clothing” | A vivid image of moral contamination reaching even to what has been in contact with defiling sin. | [NEW] বস্ত্র/জামা. Risk: Low. |
PART B — Framing Verses Outside the Core Passage (Jude 1:1–2, 1:24–25)
Since Jude consists of a single chapter, full-book coverage requires the salutation and doxology to be analyzed with the same rigor as the core passage, rather than treated as low-content framing material.
Jude 1:1–2 (Salutation)
Greek: Ἰούδας Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δοῦλος, ἀδελφὸς δὲ Ἰακώβου, τοῖς ἐν θεῷ πατρὶ ἠγαπημένοις καὶ Ἰησοῦ Χριστῷ τετηρημένοις κλητοῖς· ἔλεος ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἀγάπη πληθυνθείη.
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| δοῦλος | doulos | ”slave, bond-servant” | one bound in service, used honorifically of total devotion to Christ (not menial degradation) | “servant,” “bondservant,” “slave” | Jude identifies himself by complete submission and devotion to Christ, an honorific self-designation shared with other NT authors (e.g., Paul in Romans 1:1). | [NEW] দাস. Risk: Medium. Should be understood as the honorific “bond-servant of Christ” self-designation, not a term implying degraded status; parallels Paul’s self-designation in Romans and should be rendered consistently with any future Pauline-epistle curricula. |
| Ἰάκωβος (Ἰακώβου) | Iakōbou | ”James” | proper name; traditionally identified as James the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem church | ”James” | Jude identifies himself by relation to a well-known, authoritative figure (James), lending weight to his own standing to write this warning. | [established proper name] যাকোব. Risk: Low. |
| ἀγαπάω (ἠγαπημένοις) | ēgapēmenois | ”having been loved” (perfect passive participle) | a completed, settled state of being the object of God’s love | ”beloved,” “loved (by God the Father)“ | Believers’ identity is grounded first in being loved by God the Father — foundational to the letter’s warm pastoral address before its warnings begin. | [NEW, root ἀγάπη] প্রিয় (ঈশ্বর পিতার দ্বারা প্রিয়)। Risk: High (see ἀγάπη note below). |
| τηρέω (τετηρημένοις) | tetērēmenois | ”having been kept” (perfect passive participle) | (see core-passage note on τηρέω) | “kept,” “preserved” | The letter’s opening already introduces the “kept” motif: believers are kept “for/by Jesus Christ” even before the warnings about others who failed to keep their position (v.6) or who are kept for judgment (v.13). | [NEW, root established here for whole-letter consistency] রক্ষিত. Risk: High — this is the FIRST occurrence of the letter’s central keeping-motif; the Bengali rendering fixed here must be reused for every subsequent τηρέω occurrence (vv.6, 13, 21) and coordinated with φυλάσσω in v.24. |
| κλητός (κλητοῖς) | klētois | ”called ones” | (see baseline: effectual, sovereign summons) | “called,” “the called” | Believers’ fundamental identity: sovereignly summoned by God, not self-selected. | [TM REUSE] আহুত. Risk: High (per baseline). |
| ἔλεος | eleos | ”mercy” | (see core passage) | “mercy” | Opens the letter’s blessing formula, anticipating the mercy theme developed through vv.21–23. | [NEW, root established here] দয়া. Risk: High. |
| εἰρήνη | eirēnē | ”peace” | relational, covenantal peace with God | ”peace” | Standard apostolic greeting element. | [TM REUSE] শান্তি. Risk: Medium (per baseline). |
| ἀγάπη | agapē | ”love” | God’s self-giving covenantal love (also used for “love feasts” in v.12, and “God’s love” in v.21 — context determines which sense) | “love” | The blessing “may love be multiplied” anticipates the letter’s climax exhorting believers to “keep yourselves in the love of God” (v.21). | [NEW, root established here for whole letter] প্রেম. Risk: High. প্রেম carries strong pre-existing associations in Bengali culture with Vaishnava bhakti devotional love (Radha-Krishna prema-bhakti, especially prominent through the Bengali Chaitanya Vaishnava tradition). Despite this, প্রেম is the established rendering in mainstream Bengali Bible translation for ἀγάπη (as with ঈশ্বর for God, its long translation history has stabilized it as the expected Christian term) — retained here per that precedent, but flagged High risk requiring careful catechetical framing distinguishing God’s self-giving covenantal love from bhakti-rasa romantic-devotional love imagery. |
| πληθύνω (πληθυνθείη) | plēthyntheiē | ”may be multiplied” (optative, a wish/prayer) | abundant increase | ”be multiplied,” “increase abundantly” | A prayer-wish for abundant mercy, peace, and love among the readers — standard epistolary blessing form. | [NEW] বৃদ্धি পাক/বহুগুণে বৃদ্ধি হোক. Risk: Low. |
Jude 1:24–25 (Closing Doxology)
| Term | Transliteration | Literal Meaning | Semantic Range | English Variants | Contextual Theological Meaning | Bengali Rendering & Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| φυλάσσω (φυλάξαι) | phylaxai | ”to guard, keep watch over, protect from” | protective guarding against a specific danger (here, stumbling); a distinct but overlapping verb from τηρέω | ”keep,” “guard,” “protect” | The letter’s climactic statement of the “Kept by God” doctrine: God himself is ABLE to guard believers so they do not fall — the positive resolution of the whole letter’s warnings. | [NEW, related to but distinct from τηρέω] রক্ষা করা. Risk: High. Though a different Greek verb from τηρέω, it occupies the same “keeping/guarding” semantic domain that structures the whole letter; translators should ensure Bengali readers can perceive the thematic (if not exactly lexical) continuity with the τηρέω occurrences elsewhere. |
| ἄπταιστος (ἀπταίστους) | aptaistous | ”without stumbling, unfailing” | secure, stable, not tripped up | ”without stumbling,” “from falling,” “without fault” | God’s power guarantees believers will not fall away — foundational to the “Kept by God and Presented Blameless” doctrine. | [NEW] না হোঁচট খেয়ে/বিনা বাধায়. Risk: High. |
| δόξα | doxa | ”glory” | (abstract sense here, distinct from the concrete plural sense in v.8) | “glory” | Believers will be presented in the very presence of God’s glory — the culminating hope of the letter. | [TM REUSE, abstract sense] মহিমা. Risk: High (per baseline); note the DISTINCT sense from v.8’s concrete “glorious ones.” |
| ἄμωμος (ἀμώμους) | amōmous | ”blameless, unblemished, without fault” | ritually/morally spotless (used of unblemished sacrificial animals in LXX background, transferred to moral/spiritual perfection) | “blameless,” “faultless,” “without blemish” | The ultimate destiny of the kept believer: presented before God utterly without fault — the capstone of “Kept by God and Presented Blameless.” | [NEW] নিষ্কলঙ্ক. Risk: Critical. This is the doctrinal climax term of the entire letter; must not be weakened to “fairly good” or “mostly faithful” — it conveys total, Christ-secured moral perfection at presentation before God, not a believer’s own achievement. |
| ἀγαλλίασις | agalliasis | ”exultation, great joy” | intense, overflowing joy (stronger than ordinary χαρά, “joy”) | “great joy,” “exultation,” “rejoicing” | The emotional register of the believer’s final presentation before God: not fear, but overflowing joy. | [NEW] উল্লাস. Risk: Medium. |
| μόνος θεός | monō theō | ”only God” | God’s uniqueness/exclusivity | ”the only God” | Reasserts strict monotheism at the letter’s close — directly relevant to interfaith clarity for both Hindu-majority and Muslim-majority readers. | [NEW, root establishing μόνος] একমাত্র ঈশ্বর. Risk: High. ঈশ্বর reuses TM; একমাত্র (only/sole) must be retained to preserve the exclusivity claim, echoing μόνον δεσπότην in v.4. |
| σωτήρ | sōtēr | ”Savior” | one who saves/rescues (agent noun form of σωτηρία/σῴζω) | “Savior” | God is named directly as “our Savior” — note the doxology’s ambiguity/richness: the doxology’s grammar can be read as ascribing “Savior” and the following glory-titles to God the Father acting “through Jesus Christ,” a formulation with high Trinitarian and Christological stakes. | [NEW, derived from TM πরিত্রাণ root] পরিত্রাতা. Risk: Critical. Directly tied to the Deity of Christ / Trinitarian doctrine cluster; flag for theologian review regarding how the Father/Son relationship in this doxology’s grammar should be rendered. |
| μεγαλωσύνη | megalosynē | ”majesty, greatness” | supreme grandeur (distinct term from δόξα, “glory”) | “majesty,” “greatness” | One of four doxological attributes ascribed to God — majestic supremacy. | [NEW] মহত্ত্ব. Risk: High — kept lexically distinct from মহিমা (δόξα) despite semantic overlap in English “glory/majesty,” to preserve Jude’s four-fold doxological structure. |
| κράτος | kratos | ”might, power, dominion” (root of “-cracy”) | forceful ruling power/dominion, often used of God’s sovereign might | ”power,” “dominion,” “might” | God’s unchallenged ruling power — the doctrinal basis for “God’s Preserving Power” underlying the whole letter’s confidence. | [NEW] পরাক্রম. Risk: High. Kept distinct from সামর্থ্য (the baseline’s established rendering for δύναμις, “power of God” in Romans 1:16) since κράτος specifically emphasizes ruling dominion/might rather than raw capability — a nuance worth preserving, though both avoid শক্তি per the baseline’s Shakta-goddess-power caution. |
| ἐξουσία | exousia | ”authority, right to act, jurisdiction” | delegated or inherent right/authority to act, distinct from raw power (δύναμις/κράτος) | “authority,” “dominion” | God’s rightful authority to rule, alongside his might — completing the four-fold doxological ascription (glory, majesty, dominion, authority). | [NEW] কর্তৃত্ব. Risk: High. |
| αἰών (πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος … εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας) | aiōnos / aiōnas | ”age(s)“ | totality of time, “before all time,” “forever" | "before all time,” “forever,” “for all ages” | Asserts God’s pre-existence before all time and his unending rule into all future ages — a strong eternality/deity claim closing the letter. | [NEW, consistent with v.13 αἰών] যুগ/অনন্তকাল (এখানে: সমস্ত কালের পূর্বে … এবং অনন্তকাল ব্যাপী). Risk: High. |
| ἀμήν | amēn | ”amen, truly, so be it” | liturgical affirmation | ”Amen” | Standard closing affirmation. | [established transliteration per requirements doc] আমেন. Risk: Low. |
Coverage note: Jude 1:1–25 is now fully analyzed in its entirety (vv.1–2 salutation, vv.3–23 core passage, vv.24–25 doxology). As Jude contains only one chapter, this satisfies the full-book, chapter-by-chapter coverage mandate for the entire curriculum book.
