Doctrine Analysis
11 Doctrine Analysis — 1 John | English → Bengali
Purpose
This document is the full doctrine matrix for the 1 John curriculum, covering all five chapters and every major section, and is fully consistent with assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json — same ten doctrines, same risk tiers, same review routing. Where the doctrine risk registry states the what and why of syncretism risk, this document adds the where (chapter-by-chapter passage mapping across the whole book) and the translation risk framing that Phase 2 segment processing will need. The core passage, 1 John 4:7–21, anchors the “God is Light and God is Love” and “Sonship and Deity of Christ” doctrines but is never treated as the boundary of analysis — every chapter of 1 John is walked below and its doctrinal content is recorded explicitly, including chapters that mainly reinforce doctrines already introduced elsewhere.
Full-Book Doctrine Matrix
| Doctrine | Risk Tier | Supporting Passages (1 John) | Translation Risk Summary | Review Routing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| God is Light and God is Love | Critical | 1:5; 2:8–11; 4:7–8, 16 | ঈশ্বর প্রেম (God is love) is an ontological identity-claim, not a descriptive attribute, and directly overlaps in vocabulary with Gaudiya Vaishnavism’s prema (Chaitanya bhakti, Nadia district). আলো (light) risks absorption into Brahman-as-light/jyoti or Sufi nur imagery unless tied to moral purity (1:5–7) rather than metaphysical radiance. | Human theologian |
| Fellowship with God and One Another | Medium | 1:3, 6–7; 2:24; 4:12–16 | সহভাগিতা (fellowship) is Low risk in isolation, but the doctrine’s conditionality — fellowship tested by walking in light and continuous abiding — can collapse into generic social community warmth (para-culture neighborhood bonds) if the tested, participatory dimension is lost. | Native speaker review |
| Confession and Forgiveness of Sin | High | 1:8–10; 2:1–2; 5:16–17 | শুদ্ধ করা (cleanse) must avoid শুচি/অশুচি ritual-purity vocabulary. (পাপ) স্বীকার করা (confess) must remain direct confession to God, not sacramental confession mediated by a priest. মধ্যস্থ (Advocate, 2:1) must not read as shrine-based pir/saint intercession. | Human theologian |
| Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth | High | 2:9–11; 3:1–2, 9–17; 4:7, 20–21; 5:1 | ঈশ্বর থেকে জন্ম নেওয়া (born of God) must never approach পুনর্জন্ম (reincarnation). ভাই (brother) is grammatically male but the referent is gender-inclusive; the evidentiary test of love must not be misread as male-only. | Human theologian |
| The Incarnation and Antichrist | Critical | 1:1–3; 2:18–23; 4:1–3, 9 | যীশু খ্রীষ্ট মাংসে আসিয়াছেন must affirm real, permanent, once-for-all embodiment — never a temporary appearance (অবতার-risk) nor an illusory appearance (docetism / Islamic denial of real suffering flesh). প্রতিখ্রীষ্ট must never be rendered দাজ্জাল. | Human theologian |
| Sonship and Deity of Christ | Critical | 2:22–23; 4:15; 5:1, 5, 10–13, 20 | ঈশ্বরের পুত্র / একমাত্র পুত্র must convey unique, eternal, non-biological Sonship. Muslim-background readers routinely hear “Son of God” as a literal biological claim Islam forcefully rejects; a translator note on the relational/eternal sense is required at every occurrence in this doctrine unit. | Human theologian |
| Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life | Critical | 3:14, 19–21; 4:17; 5:11–13, 20 | অনন্ত জীবন must never approach মুক্তি/মোক্ষ (rebirth-cycle liberation). সাহস/দৃঢ় প্রত্যয় (confidence) must be distinguished from the orthodox Islamic position that final judgment outcome is unknowable before death; 1 John grounds assurance in already-accomplished, knowable facts. | Human theologian |
| Overcoming the World | High | 2:15–17; 4:4; 5:4–5 | জয় করা/বিজয় (overcome) must be tied to faith in Christ (5:4–5) as the mechanism of victory, not to renunciation or ascetic self-attainment (Hindu sannyasa, Sufi ascetic withdrawal). জগৎ (world) carries internal ambiguity within 1 John itself — object of God’s saving love (4:9) vs. fallen system not to be loved (2:15) — requiring disambiguating notes per occurrence. | Human theologian |
| Testing the Spirits | High | 2:20, 27; 4:1–6 | Plural, lowercase আত্মা (spirits, 4:1–6) must be visually and contextually distinguished from পবিত্র আত্মা, or it risks being read through a Hindu many-devas framework or a folk-Islamic jinn framework. অভিষেক (anointing) risks assimilation to Hindu ritual deity-anointing (abhisheka) unless anchored to the Spirit’s internal teaching ministry. | Human theologian |
| Idolatry and Ultimate Allegiance | High | 5:21 | মূর্তি (idols) is culturally direct and unavoidable in the Hindu-majority West Bengal context. প্রতিমা is avoided as it carries a specific Durga Puja festival association; মূর্তি keeps the theological warning general rather than provocative toward one specific festival practice. | Human theologian |
Risk totals (must match doctrine_risk_registry.json): Critical = 4, High = 5, Medium = 1, Low = 0. Theologian review required = 9 doctrines; native speaker review = 1 doctrine; automated-only = 0 doctrines.
Chapter-by-Chapter Doctrinal Walkthrough (Full Book Coverage)
Chapter 1 — Prologue, Fellowship, Light and Darkness, Confession
- 1:1–3 — The Incarnation and Antichrist (eyewitness testimony: heard, seen, touched — শুনিয়াছি, দেখিয়াছি, স্পর্শ করিয়াছি — establishing real physical embodiment against any docetic or illusionist reading); Fellowship with God and One Another (সহভাগিতা established as the purpose of the apostolic testimony).
- 1:5 — God is Light and God is Love (first half of the dual predication; “God is light and in him is no darkness at all” — আলো তied to moral purity, not metaphysical radiance).
- 1:6–7 — Fellowship with God and One Another (fellowship tested by “walking in the light”); anticipates Confession and Forgiveness of Sin via “the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
- 1:8–10 — Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (denial of sin vs. confession; ক্ষমা করা and শুদ্ধ করা introduced).
- Status: Reviewed — full doctrinal chapter; introduces three doctrines (Incarnation/Antichrist backdrop, Fellowship, Confession/Forgiveness) and the “God is Light” half of the anchor doctrine.
Chapter 2 — Advocate, Commandment of Love, World, Antichrist, Anointing
- 2:1–2 — Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (Christ as মধ্যস্থ/Advocate and as ἱλασμός, the propitiatory sacrifice for sin).
- 2:8–11 — God is Light and God is Love (light/darkness reprised in the ethical test of loving one’s brother); Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (hating a brother = walking in darkness).
- 2:15–17 — Overcoming the World (the negative-valence sense of জগৎ introduced; love of the world contrasted with love of the Father).
- 2:18–23 — The Incarnation and Antichrist (antichrists denying the Father and the Son); Sonship and Deity of Christ (denial of the Son = denial of the Father, 2:22–23).
- 2:20, 27 — Testing the Spirits (অভিষেক/anointing as the Spirit’s internal teaching ministry, anticipating the fuller test in 4:1–6).
- 2:24 — Fellowship with God and One Another (abiding in what was heard “from the beginning”).
- Status: Reviewed — full doctrinal chapter; touches six of the ten registry doctrines.
Chapter 3 — New Birth, Brotherly Love, Confidence Before God
- 3:1–2 — Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (ঈশ্বরের সন্তান, “children of God,” as the ground of identity; distinct from but related to the baseline’s দত্তকপুত্রতা/adoption doctrine).
- 3:3 — Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (purification, শুদ্ধ করা, as the hope-shaped response).
- 3:9–17 — Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (God’s seed/ঈশ্বরের বীজ; the Cain/Abel contrast; হত্যাকারী/murderer; প্রাণ দেওয়া, laying down one’s life, as Christ’s pattern of love).
- 3:14 — Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (“passed from death to life,” মৃত্যু থেকে জীবনে গিয়েছি, as a decisive, already-accomplished transfer).
- 3:19–21 — Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (the heart reassured/নিশ্চিত করা before God).
- Status: Reviewed — full doctrinal chapter; primarily develops Love for the Brethren and Assurance of Salvation.
Chapter 4:1–6 — Testing the Spirits
- 4:1–6 — Testing the Spirits (the explicit doctrinal test: confessing that Jesus Christ has come মাংসে/in the flesh distinguishes the Spirit of God from the spirit of antichrist; plural আত্মা must be visually distinguished from পবিত্র আত্মা); The Incarnation and Antichrist (the content of the test itself); Overcoming the World (“greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world,” 4:4, first “overcome” statement).
- Status: Reviewed — full doctrinal section; the hinge between chapters 1–3 and the core passage.
Chapter 4:7–21 — Core Passage: God is Light and God is Love, Sonship, Assurance
- 4:7–8 — God is Light and God is Love (ontological claim, ঈশ্বর প্রেম, first occurrence in the core unit); Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (love as evidence of being born of God and knowing God).
- 4:9–10 — The Incarnation and Antichrist (একমাত্র পুত্র/only begotten Son sent into the world); Sonship and Deity of Christ; propitiation (পাপের প্রায়শ্চিত্তীয় বলিদান) as the demonstration of love.
- 4:11–12 — Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (obligation to love flowing from having been loved); God is Light and God is Love (love perfected/পরিপূর্ণ প্রেম in mutual love).
- 4:13–15 — Testing the Spirits (the Spirit given as evidence); Sonship and Deity of Christ (confession that Jesus is the Son of God, 4:15, as the dividing line of true faith).
- 4:16 — God is Light and God is Love (second, climactic ontological restatement).
- 4:17–18 — Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (confidence in the day of judgment; perfect love casting out servile fear, distinct from reverent awe).
- 4:19–21 — God is Light and God is Love (grace-priority: “we love because he first loved us”); Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (the impossibility of loving God while hating a brother).
- Status: Full verse-by-verse treatment; the theological anchor of the curriculum, touching six of the ten registry doctrines simultaneously.
Chapter 5 — Faith, Victory, Testimony, Eternal Life, Idols
- 5:1 — Sonship and Deity of Christ / Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth (believing Jesus is the Christ = born of God = loving the brethren, the three doctrines braided together).
- 5:4–5 — Overcoming the World (climactic statement: faith as the means of victory over the world, not asceticism or renunciation).
- 5:6–8 — Sonship and Deity of Christ / Testing the Spirits (Spirit, water, and blood as threefold witness; flagged for theologian review regarding base-text handling of the Comma Johanneum at 5:7 in some manuscript traditions).
- 5:10–13 — Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (having the Son = having life; the purpose statement “that you may know you have eternal life”).
- 5:16–17 — Confession and Forgiveness of Sin (sin unto death, মৃত্যুজনক পাপ — not a Catholic “mortal sin” sacramental category).
- 5:20 — Sonship and Deity of Christ / Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life (Jesus Christ as “the true God and eternal life”).
- 5:21 — Idolatry and Ultimate Allegiance (closing charge: “keep yourselves from idols,” মূর্তি).
- Status: Reviewed — full doctrinal chapter; closes five of the ten registry doctrines with their most concentrated statements.
Coverage Confirmation
No chapter of 1 John was found to be doctrinally silent. Every chapter (1–5), including the transitional section 4:1–6 within chapter 4, has been mapped above to one or more of the ten doctrines in doctrine_risk_registry.json, with risk tier and review routing carried forward unchanged from that registry. This matrix, together with analysis/08_core_glossary.md, is the full doctrinal basis for Phase 2 segment-level translation and review routing.
Critical Risk Doctrines
Assurance of Salvation and Eternal Life
Bengali name: পরিত্রাণ ও অনন্ত জীবনের নিশ্চয়তা
Key terms: eternal_life, confidence, passed_from_death_to_life, persuade_reassure, salvation
Review routing: Human theologian
অনন্ত জীবন (eternal life) must never be conflated with মুক্তি/মোক্ষ (liberation from the Hindu rebirth cycle) — this is unending relational life with God through the Son, not escape from an ongoing cosmic cycle. সাহস/দৃঢ় প্রত্যয় (confidence) must also be distinguished from the orthodox Islamic position that one’s final judgment outcome cannot be known with certainty before death, since 1 John grounds assurance in already-accomplished, knowable facts (having the Son, having passed from death to life), not in an unresolved future determination.
God is Light and God is Love
Bengali name: ঈশ্বর আলো এবং ঈশ্বর প্রেম
Key terms: light, darkness, love, god_is_love, perfected_love
Review routing: Human theologian
The ‘God is love’ claim (ঈশ্বর প্রেম) collides directly with Gaudiya Vaishnavism’s prema — the central devotional-erotic love category of the Chaitanya bhakti movement historically centered in Nadia district, West Bengal. প্রেম is the established Bengali Christian rendering and cannot be substituted, but every occurrence requires reinforcing context that this is God’s self-giving, sacrificial nature, not romantic/emotional devotion. ‘God is light’ (আলো) carries a secondary but real risk of being absorbed into Hindu jyoti/Brahman-as-light or Sufi nur imagery unless anchored to moral purity rather than metaphysical radiance.
The Incarnation and Antichrist
Bengali name: দেহধারণ ও প্রতিখ্রীষ্ট
Key terms: incarnation, come_in_the_flesh, confess_incarnation, antichrist, manifest, word_of_life, eyewitness_testimony
Review routing: Human theologian
The confession that Jesus Christ has come মাংসে (in the flesh) must affirm real, permanent embodiment of the eternal Son, never a temporary divine appearance (অবতার-risk, per baseline) nor an illusory appearance, aligning otherwise with both ancient docetism and the Islamic denial that a divine being took on real suffering flesh. প্রতিখ্রীষ্ট (antichrist) must never be rendered দাজ্জাল; though structurally parallel (a false-messiah deceiver at history’s end), the Islamic Dajjal framework itself denies Christ’s deity and prior crucifixion/resurrection, making the two figures doctrinally incompatible despite surface similarity.
Sonship and Deity of Christ
Bengali name: খ্রীষ্টের পুত্রত্ব ও ঈশ্বরত্ব
Key terms: son_of_god, only_begotten_son, deny, christ
Review routing: Human theologian
1 John repeatedly makes confession of Jesus as the Son of God and the Christ the explicit dividing line of true faith (2:22-23; 4:15; 5:1, 5). একমাত্র পুত্র and ঈশ্বরের পুত্র must convey unique, eternal, non-biological Sonship; Bengali Muslim-background readers frequently hear ‘Son of God’ as a literal biological claim, which Islamic theology forcefully rejects, making a translator note on the relational/eternal (not biological) sense pastorally necessary at every occurrence in this doctrine unit.
High Risk Doctrines
Confession and Forgiveness of Sin
Bengali name: পাপ স্বীকার ও ক্ষমা
Key terms: confess_sin, forgive, cleanse, sin, blood_of_jesus, sin_unto_death
Review routing: Human theologian
শুদ্ধ করা (cleanse) must avoid শুচি/অশুচি vocabulary, which carries strong Hindu ritual-purity (shuddhi) connotations that would reduce forgiveness to ceremonial purification rather than moral cleansing through Christ’s blood. Additionally, (পাপ) স্বীকার করি (confess) must be read as direct confession to God, not a Catholic-style sacramental confession mediated by a priest, given this curriculum’s mainstream Protestant register.
Idolatry and Ultimate Allegiance
Bengali name: প্রতিমাপূজা ও চূড়ান্ত আনুগত্য
Key terms: idols, guard_keep, world
Review routing: Human theologian
The letter’s closing charge to guard against idols (মূর্তি) is culturally direct and unavoidable in the Hindu-majority West Bengal context, where deity images are a normal, visible feature of daily religious life. মূর্তি (general, descriptive) is preferred over প্রতিমা (which carries the specific Durga Puja festival association) to keep the theological warning clear without gratuitous provocation toward a specific festival practice; native-speaker pastoral-tone judgment is still required per the baseline’s kingdom_mission caution about social friction in Hindu-majority contexts.
Love for the Brethren as Evidence of New Birth
Bengali name: নতুন জন্মের প্রমাণ রূপে ভাইদের প্রতি প্রেম
Key terms: born_of_god, brother, hate, lay_down_life, gods_seed, children_of_god
Review routing: Human theologian
ঈশ্বর থেকে জন্ম নেওয়া (born of God) must never be rendered with or confused with পুনর্জন্ম (reincarnation), which would import a Hindu rebirth-cycle framework directly contradicting the one-time, non-repeatable nature of this spiritual new birth. ভাই (brother) is grammatically male in Bengali though the referent is gender-inclusive, requiring a clarifying footnote to prevent the evidentiary test of love from being read as applying only to male believers.
Overcoming the World
Bengali name: জগৎ জয়
Key terms: overcome, world, faith
Review routing: Human theologian
জয় করা/বিজয় (overcome) must be tied to faith in Christ as the mechanism of victory (5:4-5), not to renunciation or ascetic self-attainment — a live comparative risk given Hindu sannyasa world-renunciation and Sufi ascetic withdrawal frameworks, both already flagged in the baseline’s separation_unto_gods_service doctrine. জগৎ (world) also carries an internal ambiguity within 1 John itself, denoting both the object of God’s saving love (4:9) and the fallen system believers must not love (2:15), requiring disambiguating notes at each occurrence.
Testing the Spirits
Bengali name: আত্মাদের পরীক্ষা
Key terms: spirits_testing, test_spirits, false_prophet, confess_incarnation, anointing
Review routing: Human theologian
The plural, lowercase আত্মা (spirits) in 4:1-6 must be visually and contextually distinguished from পবিত্র আত্মা (the Holy Spirit); left unmarked, this risks being read through a Hindu framework of many devas/spirits or a folk-Islamic framework of jinn, both live background assumptions among Bengali readers approaching the concept of ‘testing spirits.’ অভিষেক (anointing, 2:20, 27) further risks assimilation to Hindu ritual deity-anointing (abhisheka) unless anchored to the Spirit’s internal teaching ministry.
Medium Risk Doctrines
Fellowship with God and One Another
Bengali name: ঈশ্বরের সাথে ও পরস্পর সহভাগিতা
Key terms: fellowship, abide, walk_conduct, beloved_address
Review routing: Native speaker review
সহভাগিতা is a Low-risk baseline term, but the doctrine’s condition — that fellowship is tested by walking in the light and abiding continuously in God — raises the risk to Medium, since a careless rendering could reduce this to ordinary social community warmth (para-culture neighborhood bonds) rather than tested, participatory union with God and other believers.
