Core Glossary
08 Core Glossary — Matthew 1–28 (English → Bengali)
This glossary consolidates every load-bearing term identified in 07_semantic_analysis.md, organized by curriculum doctrine. Terms marked [REUSE] are fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json / bible_term_registry.json and MUST be used exactly as recorded there — no alternative renderings are permitted for this curriculum. Terms marked [NEW] are Matthew-specific additions proposed for this curriculum’s translation memory and require Phase 1 Step-appropriate approval before Phase 2 use. Risk tiers follow the baseline’s Critical/High/Medium/Low framework.

Transliteration: ononto jibon
Doctrine: Eternal Life and Reward
Rejected alternatives: মোক্ষ
Original: ζωὴ αἰώνιος
Category: Salvation
NEW. Must be distinguished from moksha (liberation from the rebirth cycle, already forbidden by baseline for salvation) and from mere unending temporal existence (19:16,29; 25:46); connects to baseline salvation/পরিত্রাণ and resurrection/পুনরুত্থান.
Eternal Punishment
Approved rendering: অনন্ত দণ্ড / অনন্ত আগুন
Transliteration: ononto dondo / ononto agun
Doctrine: Judgment and the End of the Age
Original: κόλασις αἰώνιος / πῦρ αἰώνιον
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Final, everlasting judgment (25:41,46) — never implying eventual resolution through rebirth or purification, a real risk given Hindu karma cosmology.

Judgment
Approved rendering: বিচার
Transliteration: bichar
Doctrine: Judgment and the End of the Age
Rejected alternatives: কর্মফল
Original: κρίσις
Category: Eschatology

Lord
Approved rendering: প্রভু
Transliteration: provu

Rejected alternatives: মালিক, ঈশ্বর
Original: κύριος
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Used of Jesus throughout Matthew (7:21-23; 8:2; 22:41-45). The Psalm 110 paradox (22:41-45) ties Son of David and Lordship together.

Parousia Coming
Approved rendering: আগমন
Transliteration: agomon
Doctrine: Judgment and the End of the Age
Rejected alternatives: অবতার
Original: παρουσία
Category: Eschatology
NEW. A singular, final, visible return in glory (24:3,27,37,39) — never framed as a repeatable divine descent, paralleling the baseline’s rejection of অবতার for incarnation.
Ransom
Approved rendering: [UNRESOLVED — see notes; do not proceed to Phase 2 translation of Matthew 20:28/26:28 without theologian resolution]
Transliteration: —
Doctrine: The Atonement and the Ransom for Many
Original: λύτρον
Category: Salvation
NEW, UNRESOLVED. Two candidates under consideration, neither adopted: (1) মুক্তির মূল্য — natural, but shares the root of the baseline-forbidden মুক্তি (Hindu liberation-from-rebirth term for salvation); (2) প্রাণের মূল্য — avoids the root collision but loses the ‘release from captivity’ nuance. Mandatory human theologian resolution required before Phase 2 translation of Matthew 20:28 and 26:28. Whichever choice is made, a translator note distinguishing this transactional ransom-price sense from the general doctrine of salvation/পরিত্রাণ is required.
Resurrection
Approved rendering: পুনরুত্থান
Transliteration: punorutthan
Doctrine: Resurrection of Christ
Rejected alternatives: পুনর্জন্ম, পুনর্জীবন
Original: ἀνάστασις
Category: Eschatology

Righteousness
Approved rendering: ধার্মিকতা
Transliteration: dharmikota
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Rejected alternatives: ধর্ম, পুণ্য, ন্যায়
Original: δικαιοσύνη
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. In Matthew carries both the forensic sense and an ethical-practical sense (5:6,8,20; 6:1,33; 21:32) — righteousness exceeding external, performance-based Pharisaic righteousness. Never ধর্ম, which in everyday Bengali denotes religion/duty itself.
Salvation
Approved rendering: পরিত্রাণ
Transliteration: poritran
Doctrine: Salvation
Rejected alternatives: মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, নাজাত
Original: σωτηρία
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Applies at Matt 1:21; 10:22; 19:25; 24:13. Never মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, or নাজাত.
Son Of David

Transliteration: Dayuder Putro
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Rejected alternatives: মশীহ, দায়ূদের বংশ (used alone as a mere lineage descriptor)
Original: υἱὸς Δαυίδ
Category: Christology
NEW. A fixed messianic acclamation title (1:1; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30-31; 21:9,15; 22:42), distinct from the baseline’s দায়ূদের বংশ. Bengali Muslims venerate দায়ূদ as a prophet-king without the covenantal-promise dimension; must never be flattened to genealogy alone.
Son Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বরের পুত্র
Transliteration: Ishshorer Putro
Doctrine: Sonship of Christ
Rejected alternatives: দেবপুত্র, ঈশ্বরের অংশ
Original: υἱὸς θεοῦ
Category: Christology
Inherited from Romans package. Reserved exclusively for Christ (3:17; 14:33; 16:16; 17:5; 27:43,54). Never used for believers’ adoptive sonship — see sons_of_god_believers. Muslim-background readers frequently hear this as a literal biological claim; a translator note is mandatory at every occurrence.
Son Of Man
Approved rendering: মনুষ্যপুত্র
Transliteration: monushyoputro
Doctrine: The Son of Man’s Authority to Judge
Rejected alternatives: মানুষের ছেলে (generic, loses Daniel 7 authority-to-judge background)
Original: υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου
Category: Christology
NEW. Jesus’ characteristic Danielic self-designation (8:20; 9:6; 12:8; 16:13,27-28; 17:22-23; 20:18-19,28; 24:27-44; 25:31; 26:64). Must never be flattened to a generic ‘a man’ nor treated as subordinate to Son of God.
Virgin
Approved rendering: কুমারী
Transliteration: kumari
Doctrine: Incarnation and Virgin Conception
Rejected alternatives: তরুণী, কনে
Original: παρθένος
Category: Christology

Transliteration: dattaka-putrota
Doctrine: Adoption — Believers’ Sonship Distinguished from Christ’s
Rejected alternatives: দত্তক নেওয়া

Category: Adoption
Inherited from Romans package. Doctrinal backdrop to Matthew’s ‘inherit’ (5:5) and ‘sons of God’ (believers, 5:9,45) terms.
Authority
Approved rendering: কর্তৃত্ব
Transliteration: kartrittwo
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
Rejected alternatives: অধিকার, ক্ষমতা
Original: ἐξουσία
Category: Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
NEW. কর্তৃত্ব conveys inherent, sovereign authority to command, over অধিকার (mere entitlement) or ক্ষমতা (often political power, salient given Bengal’s politically turbulent vocabulary of ক্ষমতা). Central to 7:29; 8:9; 9:6,8; 21:23-27; 28:18.
Baptism
Approved rendering: বাপ্তিস্ম
Transliteration: baptisma
Doctrine: Baptism and Repentance
Rejected alternatives: স্নান, গঙ্গাস্নান
Original: βάπτισμα / βαπτίζω
Category: Great Commission
NEW. Established transliterated loanword. Must be distinguished from Hindu ritual bathing for purification (স্নান) and merit-oriented Ganges bathing (গঙ্গাস্নান) at 3:6,11,13-16 and 28:19.
Bind And Loose
Approved rendering: বাঁধা / খুলে দেওয়া
Transliteration: bandha / khule deoa
Doctrine: The Church and Church Discipline
Rejected alternatives: মুক্ত করা
Original: δέω / λύω
Category: Church
NEW. Avoid মুক্ত করা for ‘loose’ — shares the root of baseline-forbidden মুক্তি (Hindu liberation-from-rebirth) and would wrongly imply salvation-category liberation rather than a disciplinary declaration (16:19; 18:18).
Called
Approved rendering: আহুত
Transliteration: ahuto
Doctrine: Divine Calling
Rejected alternatives: আমন্ত্রিত, নিমন্ত্রিত
Original: κλητός

Transliteration: shikar kora / oshikar kora

Original: ὁμολογέω / ἀρνέομαι
Category: Discipleship
NEW. Parallels the baseline’s Romans 10:9 salvation-confession pattern (10:32-33; 26:69-75); a live pastoral concern for converts risking family/communal rejection in both Hindu and Muslim contexts.
Covenant
Approved rendering: নিয়ম
Transliteration: niyom
Doctrine: Davidic Covenant / New Covenant
Rejected alternatives: চুক্তি, অঙ্গীকার
Original: διαθήκη
Category: Covenant
Inherited from Romans package. Underlies both the Davidic covenant and the new covenant of the Last Supper (26:28).
Defile
Approved rendering: অপবিত্র করা
Transliteration: opobitro kora
Doctrine: Sabbath Controversies and Human Tradition / Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Original: κοινόω
Category: Righteousness
NEW. Relocates defilement to the heart’s moral condition (15:11,18,20), not external ritual failure; extends the ‘pure in heart’ Beatitude (5:8).
Demons Unclean Spirits
Approved rendering: অপবিত্র আত্মা
Transliteration: opobitro attha
Doctrine: Spiritual Conflict with Satan and Demonic Powers
Rejected alternatives: ভূত
Original: δαιμόνια / πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον
Category: Spiritual Conflict
NEW. Never ভূত, the Bengali folk-Hindu ghost/spirit-possession term; অপবিত্র আত্মা is the direct antonym-pair of পবিত্র আত্মা (Holy Spirit) (8:16,28-34; 9:32-34; 12:22-45).
Election
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বরের মনোনয়ন

Transliteration: jug-er shomapti
Doctrine: Judgment and the End of the Age
Original: συντέλεια τοῦ αἰῶνος
Category: Eschatology
NEW. Must avoid framing through the Hindu cyclical yuga cosmology (24:3; 28:20); this is a definitive, linear consummation of history.
Faith
Approved rendering: বিশ্বাস
Transliteration: bishwas
Doctrine: Faith
Rejected alternatives: ঈমান, শ্রদ্ধা
Original: πίστις
Category: Faith
Inherited from Romans package. Frequent in Matthew’s healing narratives (8:10; 9:22; 15:28; 17:20). Never ঈমান or শ্রদ্ধা.
False Messiah
Approved rendering: ভণ্ড খ্রীষ্ট
Transliteration: bhondo Khrishto
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David (negative contrast)
Rejected alternatives: মশীহ (even in this negative construction)
Original: ψευδόχριστος
Category: Christology
NEW. Never render with মশীহ even negatively (24:24) — doing so would wrongly imply Matthew shares the Islamic Isa-Christology category even while negating it.
Fulfill
Approved rendering: পূর্ণ করা
Transliteration: purno kora
Doctrine: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy
Rejected alternatives: বাতিল করা
Original: πληρόω
Category: Fulfillment of Prophecy
NEW. Must convey completion/bringing-to-fullness, never abolition; anchors the fulfillment-formula pattern (1:22; 2:15,17,23; 5:17; 8:17; 12:17; 13:35; 21:4; 26:54,56; 27:9). Must also be distinguished from the Islamic doctrine of naskh (abrogation).

Inherited from Romans package. Used of Jesus’ own preaching (Matt 4:23) and the Great Commission’s global proclamation mandate (24:14; 26:13; 28:19-20). Never ইঞ্জিল, the Qur’anic/Muslim-idiom term.

Transliteration: anugroho
Doctrine: Grace Versus Works-Merit
Rejected alternatives: কৃপা, পুণ্য, ভাগ্য
Original: χάρις
Category: Salvation
Inherited from Romans package. Matthew’s parable of the vineyard workers (20:1-16) is a direct narrative enactment of grace-versus-merit; must never be read through a পুণ্য merit-accounting lens.
Holy
Approved rendering: পবিত্র
Transliteration: pobitro
Doctrine: Sanctification
Rejected alternatives: শুচি, নির্মল
Original: ἅγιος
Category: Sanctification
Inherited from Romans package. Used of the Holy Spirit (1:20) and of what must not be given to dogs (7:6). Reserved exclusively for ‘holy’/set-apartness — never reused for ‘pure in heart’ (5:8), which uses বিশুদ্ধ instead.

Transliteration: bhondo / koptota
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Original: ὑποκριτής / ὑπόκρισις
Category: Righteousness
NEW. The sharpest negative term in Matthew’s critique of external, performance-based religion (6:2,5,16; 15:7; 23:13-29); always tie back to ‘pure in heart’ (5:8) and 6:1-18; avoid casual generalized-insult usage.
Inherit
Approved rendering: উত্তরাধিকার পাবে
Transliteration: uttoradhikar pabe
Doctrine: Blessedness of the Kingdom (the Beatitudes)
Original: κληρονομέω
Category: Beatitudes
NEW. Legal inheritance language (5:5); connects to baseline adoption doctrine — believers as heirs with full rights, not a lesser or partial/symbolic inheritance.
King Of The Jews
Approved rendering: ইহুদীদের রাজা
Transliteration: Ihudider raja
Doctrine: Jesus as the Promised Messiah and Son of David
Original: ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Category: Christology
NEW. An ironic mockery title, narratively true (2:2; 27:11,29,37); ties the Kingdom and Messiah/Son of David doctrines directly to the cross.
Kingdom Of Heaven
Approved rendering: স্বর্গরাজ্য
Transliteration: shorgorajyo
Doctrine: The Kingdom of Heaven
Original: βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν
Category: Kingdom
NEW. স্বর্গ carries deep roots in Hindu cosmology as svarga — a temporary, merit-earned paradise realm within the samsara rebirth cycle. Must be glossed as God’s eternal, sovereign reign, synonymous with baseline’s ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য (used ~32x: 3:2; 4:17; 5:3,10,19-20; 13:11,24,31,33,44-47; 18:3; 19:14,23-24; 25:34).

Category: Righteousness
NEW. প্রেম carries strong devotional-romantic connotations in Bengali Vaishnav bhakti literature (Radha-Krishna prem tradition); mandatory translator note required at first occurrence (5:44; 22:37-39) clarifying that biblical agapē is selfless, willed, covenantal love.
Mercy
Approved rendering: দয়া
Transliteration: doya
Doctrine: Mercy and Compassion
Original: ἔλεος
Category: Righteousness
NEW. Must not be conflated with grace/অনুগ্রহ’s forensic, soteriological weight; দয়া is compassion toward the suffering/guilty (5:7; 9:13; 12:7; 23:23; 25:31-46).
Mysteries Of The Kingdom
Approved rendering: নিগূঢ় সত্য
Transliteration: nigurho shotyo
Doctrine: Parables and the Mysteries of the Kingdom
Rejected alternatives: রহস্য (alone)
Original: μυστήρια
Category: Kingdom
NEW. Avoid রহস্য alone, heard through Bengal’s Tantric esoteric-initiation-secret-knowledge association; these are openly revealed truths (13:11), not occult secrets.

Transliteration: bishwasher baddhota
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching / The Great Commission
Rejected alternatives: ধর্মীয় কর্তব্য পালন

Transliteration: shanti sthaponkari

Perfect
Approved rendering: পরিপূর্ণ
Transliteration: paripurno
Doctrine: Righteousness Exceeding the Pharisees
Rejected alternatives: সিদ্ধ

Poor In Spirit
Approved rendering: আত্মায় দীন
Transliteration: attay din
Doctrine: Blessedness of the Kingdom (the Beatitudes)
Rejected alternatives: দরিদ্র
Original: πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι
Category: Beatitudes
NEW. দরিদ্র (literal economic poverty) must be avoided — collapses the metaphor into literal poverty and risks a caste/class reading; দীন paired with আত্মায় correctly locates the poverty as spiritual disposition (5:3).
Power Of God
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বরের সামর্থ্য
Transliteration: Ishshorer shamorthyo
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching (background)
Rejected alternatives: শক্তি

Transliteration: mon poriborton kora
Doctrine: Baptism and Repentance
Rejected alternatives: প্রায়শ্চিত্ত, অনুতাপ (alone)
Original: μετάνοια
Category: Discipleship
NEW. Never প্রায়শ্চিত্ত, the Hindu ritual penance/expiation that offsets accumulated karma, nor mere regret (অনুতাপ alone); this is a decisive, God-ward reorientation (3:2,8; 4:17; 11:20-21).
Sanctification
Approved rendering: পবিত্রীকরণ
Transliteration: pobitrikoron

Sons Of God Believers
Approved rendering: ঈশ্বরের সন্তান
Transliteration: Ishshorer shontan
Doctrine: Adoption — Believers’ Sonship Distinguished from Christ’s
Rejected alternatives: ঈশ্বরের পুত্র (reserved exclusively for Christ)
Original: υἱοὶ θεοῦ
Category: Adoption
NEW. Must never use ঈশ্বরের পুত্র; ঈশ্বরের সন্তান is required for all believer-sonship references (5:9,45) to preserve the New Testament’s sharp distinction, which loose Bengali devotional ‘child of God’ idiom easily blurs.
Taught Teaching
Approved rendering: শিক্ষা দেওয়া
Transliteration: shiksha deoa
Doctrine: The Authority of Jesus’ Teaching
Rejected alternatives: উপদেশ
Original: διδάσκω
Category: Authority of Jesus’ Teaching

Worship
Approved rendering: প্রণাম করা / আরাধনা করা
Transliteration: pronam kora / aradhona kora
Doctrine: Worship Due to Christ Alone
Rejected alternatives: পূজা
Original: προσκυνέω
Category: Christology
NEW. প্রণাম alone risks being read as ordinary respectful homage to an elder, teacher, or guru; when worship due to God alone is intended (2:11; 14:33; 28:9,17), material must use আরাধনা explicitly. Never পূজা, the Hindu deity-ritual worship term.

Blessed
Approved rendering: ধন্য
Transliteration: dhonyo
Doctrine: Blessedness of the Kingdom (the Beatitudes)
Rejected alternatives: ভাগ্যবান
Original: μακάριος
Category: Beatitudes
NEW. ধন্য is the established Bengali Bible term for God’s declared verdict of favor. Reject ভাগ্যবান (‘lucky/fated’), which frames the state as fortune/destiny rather than divine favor — the core passage (5:3-11) opens with this word nine times and demands strict consistency.
Church
Approved rendering: মণ্ডলী
Transliteration: mondoli
Doctrine: The Church and Church Discipline
Rejected alternatives: মন্দির, গির্জা
Original: ἐκκλησία
Category: Church
Inherited from Romans package. First occurs at 16:18 (‘my church’); the church-discipline procedure at 18:15-17 elevates practical review weight to High for that passage, though the term itself is unchanged.
