Semantic Analysis
07 — Semantic Analysis: 2 Timothy (Koine Greek → Bengali)
Governing Note on Reuse of the Romans Baseline
2 Timothy shares a large common vocabulary with the Romans Language Package (grace, faith, salvation, righteousness, gospel, calling, holy/sanctification, resurrection, Lord, God, Jesus, Christ, glory, apostle, church-adjacent terms, election, power of God, kingdom of God). Every such term below is marked “REUSE (baseline)” and the Bengali rendering is copied verbatim from translation_memory.json. No baseline rendering is altered. This document’s new material is restricted to vocabulary load-bearing for 2 Timothy’s seven curriculum doctrines that does not already exist in the baseline: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture, Perseverance under Suffering, Guarding Sound Doctrine, Faithful Transmission of the Gospel, The Charge to Preach the Word, Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days, and Assurance of Reward.
PART 1 — Core Passage: 2 Timothy 3:14–4:5 (Verse-by-Verse)
2 Timothy 3:14
σὺ δὲ μένε ἐν οἷς ἔμαθες καὶ ἐπιστώθης — “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed”
μένε (menō)
- Transliteration: meno
- Literal meaning: to remain, stay, abide, continue in a fixed place or state
- Semantic range: physical remaining; relational abiding (John’s Gospel); persisting steadfastly in a teaching or state
- English variants: continue, abide, remain, stand firm
- Contextual theological meaning: Timothy is charged to stay fixed in apostolic teaching amid the coming apostasy described in 3:1-13; this is the positive counterpart to “turning away” (4:4).
- Destination-language rendering: স্থির থাকা (sthir thaka, “remain firm/fixed”) — Risk: Medium. Doctrine: Guarding Sound Doctrine / Faithful Transmission of the Gospel. No major religious collision, but must not be softened to a passive “stay” that loses the active, resistant sense of holding a position under pressure.
ἐπιστώθης (pistoō, passive)
- Transliteration: epistōthēs
- Literal meaning: to have been made certain/confirmed; passive “you were assured/convinced”
- Semantic range: to be firmly persuaded, to have received confirmation of trustworthiness
- English variants: firmly believed, were assured of, were convinced of
- Contextual theological meaning: Shares the πιστ- root with faith (πίστις); Timothy’s confidence rests not on private feeling but on the reliability of what he was taught and by whom.
- Destination-language rendering: দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করা (dridhobhabe bishwas kora, “firmly believed”) — Risk: High. Reuses baseline বিশ্বাস root (Faith doctrine, High risk). Must retain the object-specificity rule from baseline: the confidence is in the apostolic gospel content, not generalized creedal certainty.
2 Timothy 3:15
τὰ ἱερὰ γράμματα — “the sacred writings”
- Transliteration: ta hiera grammata
- Literal meaning: the sacred/holy letters (writings)
- Semantic range: synonymous in this context with γραφή (“Scripture,” v.16); refers to the Old Testament writings Timothy learned from childhood (from his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois, 1:5; 3:14-15)
- English variants: sacred writings, holy scriptures, sacred texts
- Contextual theological meaning: Establishes continuity: the OT Scriptures Timothy knew from infancy are the same category of divine writing Paul calls γραφή in v.16 — grounding Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture doctrine in the OT canon Timothy already possessed.
- Destination-language rendering: পবিত্রশাস্ত্র (pobitrashastro, “holy scripture”) — Risk: Critical. Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture. Alternatives rejected: ধর্মগ্রন্থ (“religious scripture” — a generic label applied equally to Hindu shastras and the Qur’an in Bengali usage, erasing the unique divine-origin claim); শাস্ত্র alone (in everyday Bengali usage denotes any authoritative treatise, including Hindu shastric literature on law, ritual, or astrology). পবিত্রশাস্ত্র is the established Bengali Christian compound and must be used consistently with v.16’s γραφή.
τὰ δυνάμενά σε σοφίσαι εἰς σωτηρίαν διὰ πίστεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ — “able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus”
- σωτηρία → REUSE (baseline) পরিত্রাণ. Risk: Critical. Never মুক্তি/মোক্ষ/নাজাত (per baseline forbidden list).
- πίστις (faith) → REUSE (baseline) বিশ্বাস. Risk: High. Object of faith (Christ Jesus) is explicit in the Greek and must remain explicit in Bengali per baseline’s object-specificity rule.
- σοφίσαι (sophizō — “make wise”) — Transliteration: sophisai. Literal meaning: to make skilled/wise, to instruct toward wisdom. Semantic range: intellectual instruction; can also mean “to devise cleverly” in secular Greek (not the sense here). English variants: make wise, instruct for wisdom. Contextual theological meaning: the Scriptures’ purpose is not abstract wisdom but wisdom that leads specifically to salvation through faith in Christ — Scripture’s sufficiency is soteriological, not encyclopedic. Destination-language rendering: জ্ঞানবান করা (gyanbaan kora, “make wise/knowledgeable”) — Risk: Medium. জ্ঞান (knowledge/wisdom) carries a secondary association with Hindu jñāna (the path of liberating knowledge in Vedantic philosophy); a translator note clarifying that this wisdom is relational trust in Christ, not mystical self-realization, is recommended wherever this term recurs near σωτηρία.
2 Timothy 3:16
πᾶσα γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ ὠφέλιμος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν, πρὸς ἐλεγμόν, πρὸς ἐπανόρθωσιν, πρὸς παιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ
πᾶσα γραφή (pasa graphē)
- Transliteration: pasa graphē
- Literal meaning: all scripture / every scripture
- Semantic range: the entirety of the OT canon (and by extension, the developing NT canon as recognized authoritative writing); γραφή throughout the NT always denotes divinely authoritative writing, never merely “a document”
- English variants: all Scripture, every Scripture, the whole of Scripture
- Contextual theological meaning: The foundational verse for the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture — the totality, not a select portion, is God-breathed and profitable.
- Destination-language rendering: সমস্ত পবিত্রশাস্ত্র (shomosto pobitrashastro) — Risk: Critical. Must not be narrowed to “সমস্ত শাস্ত্র” alone (see v.15 note on শাস্ত্র’s Hindu-shastric ambiguity); the modifier পবিত্র (holy — REUSE baseline term, Critical risk, “সেট apart for God,” per Sanctification doctrine) must always accompany শাস্ত্র in this curriculum.
θεόπνευστος (theopneustos)
- Transliteration: theopneustos
- Literal meaning: God-breathed (θεός “God” + πνέω “to breathe/blow”); a hapax legomenon in the NT
- Semantic range: the compound denotes origin, not merely effect — Scripture is the product of God’s own breath/Spirit, not a text that later became religiously inspiring
- English variants: God-breathed, inspired by God, given by inspiration of God
- Contextual theological meaning: This is THE anchor text for the Inspiration doctrine. The claim is about the divine source of the text itself (cf. 2 Peter 1:21), not the subjective experience of the reader.
- Destination-language rendering: ঈশ্বর-নিঃশ্বাসিত (Ishshor-nishshashito, “God-breathed”) — Risk: Critical. Doctrine: Inspiration and Sufficiency of Scripture. Alternatives rejected: অনুপ্রাণিত alone (“inspired” — in ordinary Bengali this word is used for a poet, athlete, or activist being “inspired” by an experience or role model; it describes a subjective motivating effect, not an objective claim about the text’s divine origin, and therefore under-translates θεόπνευστος’s strong compound sense). Where অনুপ্রাণিত is retained for readability in a given translation tradition, it MUST be paired with a translator note establishing that the origin, not merely the effect, of Scripture is in view. মানুষের রচিত (“man-composed”) is the direct doctrinal opposite and must never appear as a gloss.
ὠφέλιμος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν, ἐλεγμόν, ἐπανόρθωσιν, παιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ
- Transliteration: ōphelimos pros didaskalian, elegmon, epanorthōsin, paideian tēn en dikaiosynē
- Literal meaning: profitable/useful for: teaching, reproof/conviction, correction/restoration, training/discipline in righteousness
- Semantic range: διδασκαλία = positive instruction; ἐλεγμός = exposing and convicting of error; ἐπανόρθωσις = restoring to a right condition/course (a nautical/agricultural metaphor for straightening); παιδεία = the disciplined training of a child, moral formation over time
- English variants: teaching, reproof, correction, training/instruction in righteousness
- Contextual theological meaning: Four functions of Scripture’s sufficiency — establishing truth, exposing error, restoring the erring, and forming ongoing righteous character. δικαιοσύνη here is the same forensic-and-relational righteousness as Romans, now viewed as the shape Scripture-formed living takes.
- Destination-language rendering:
- διδασκαλία → শিক্ষা (shikkha, “teaching”) — Risk: Low.
- ἐλεγμός → দোষ প্রকাশ / অনুযোগ (dosh prokash, “exposing fault/reproof”) — Risk: Medium. Must convey confrontation of specific error, not vague criticism.
- ἐπανόρθωσις → সংশোধন (songshodhon, “correction/amendment”) — Risk: Medium.
- παιδεία τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ → ধার্মিকতায় শিক্ষাদান/অনুশীলন (dharmikotay shikkhadan, “training in righteousness”) — Risk: Critical, because it uses ধার্মিকতা (REUSE baseline, Critical risk term). ধার্মিকতা must never be replaced here with ধর্ম (per baseline’s absolute prohibition), which would turn “training in righteousness” into “training in religion/duty” — precisely the confusion the baseline warns against.
2 Timothy 3:17
ἵνα ἄρτιος ᾖ ὁ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος, πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐξηρτισμένος
ἄρτιος (artios)
- Transliteration: artios
- Literal meaning: complete, fit, capable, proficient (fitted exactly to a purpose)
- Semantic range: wholeness/adequacy for a task, not moral perfection or mystical attainment
- English variants: complete, competent, proficient, adequate
- Contextual theological meaning: The purpose-clause outcome of Scripture’s sufficiency (v.16): a Scripture-formed believer lacks nothing needed for faithful service.
- Destination-language rendering: পরিপূর্ণ (poripurno, “fully complete/adequate”) — Risk: Medium. Alternative firmly rejected: সিদ্ধ (siddho) — this word carries a strong technical sense in Bengali Hindu/Buddhist usage of a “siddha,” a being who has attained spiritual perfection or supernatural accomplishment through yogic discipline; using সিদ্ধ here would suggest the “man of God” achieves a self-attained spiritual perfection rather than a Scripture-equipped adequacy for service. পরিপূর্ণ avoids this entirely.
ἐξηρτισμένος (exartizō, perfect passive participle)
- Transliteration: exērtismenos
- Literal meaning: thoroughly equipped, furnished, outfitted
- Semantic range: the completing/finishing of equipment for a task (nautical/military overtones — fully outfitted for a voyage or campaign)
- English variants: equipped, thoroughly furnished, outfitted
- Contextual theological meaning: Reinforces ἄρτιος: Scripture is the sufficient equipping resource for “every good work” — directly supports the Sufficiency-of-Scripture doctrine’s practical entailment.
- Destination-language rendering: সুসজ্জিত (susojjito, “well-equipped”) — Risk: Medium. Pair consistently with পরিপূর্ণ; together they form the fixed phrase পরিপূর্ণ ও সুসজ্জিত that should be used identically wherever 3:17 or its echoes appear elsewhere in the curriculum.
2 Timothy 4:1
διαμαρτύρομαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ, τοῦ μέλλοντος κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς, κατὰ τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ
διαμαρτύρομαι (diamartyromai)
- Transliteration: diamartyromai
- Literal meaning: to charge/testify solemnly, to bear thorough witness
- Semantic range: a formal, weighty charge given as if under oath, invoking witnesses
- English variants: I charge you, I solemnly charge, I testify
- Contextual theological meaning: Elevates the imperatives of 4:2 to the level of a binding apostolic commission witnessed by God and Christ himself — this is the hinge into The Charge to Preach the Word.
- Destination-language rendering: দৃঢ়ভাবে আদেশ দিচ্ছি (dridhobhabe adesh dichchi, “I solemnly charge/command”) — Risk: High. Doctrine: The Charge to Preach the Word. Must retain the sworn, formal register — not a casual suggestion.
κρίνειν ζῶντας καὶ νεκρούς (judge the living and the dead)
- Transliteration: krinein zōntas kai nekrous
- Literal meaning: to judge/decide the case of the living and the dead
- Semantic range: κρίνω = to judge, discern, decide judicially; the phrase is a fixed early-Christian confessional formula for Christ’s eschatological judgment of all humanity, living and already-deceased
- English variants: judge the living and the dead
- Contextual theological meaning: Grounds the charge to preach in the certainty of final accountability before Christ, the judge — connects to Assurance of Reward (4:8) from the opposite pole (assurance of judgment).
- Destination-language rendering: জীবিত ও মৃতদের বিচার করবেন (jibito o mritoder bichar korben) — Risk: High. বিচার করা (to judge) is standard vocabulary with no significant syncretism risk, but the doctrinal weight (Christ, not karma or fate, is the personal judge of every human being without exception) must be preserved; cross-reference baseline’s rejection of ভাগ্য/নিয়তি (fate/destiny) for God’s providence and choice — the same caution applies here against any reading that reduces final judgment to impersonal karmic reckoning.
ἐπιφάνεια (epiphaneia)
- Transliteration: epiphaneia
- Literal meaning: appearing, manifestation, visible showing-forth
- Semantic range: used in 2 Timothy for both Christ’s past manifestation in the incarnation/ministry (1:10) and his future visible return (4:1, 4:8); a technical term for divine self-disclosure in history
- English variants: appearing, manifestation, coming
- Contextual theological meaning: Here (4:1) it is Christ’s future, visible, historical return — the same event anticipated with longing in 4:8 (Assurance of Reward). This is a singular, unrepeatable historical event (past: incarnation; future: return), not a cycle.
- Destination-language rendering: প্রকাশ (prokash, “appearing/manifestation”) — Risk: High. Doctrine bridges Christology (cf. baseline’s Incarnation entry, দেহধারণ, Critical risk) and Eschatology/Assurance of Reward. Caution: must not be assimilated to the Hindu avatar framework of a deity’s repeated, cyclical descents (the same concern the baseline raises for অবতার under Incarnation) — a translator note is recommended distinguishing Christ’s two appearings (past incarnation, future return) as two poles of one linear historical event, not a recurring pattern.
βασιλεία αὐτοῦ (his kingdom)
- REUSE (baseline) ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য pattern → here রendered তাঁর রাজ্য (his kingdom, i.e., Christ’s). Risk: Medium. Same caution as baseline kingdom_of_god entry: God’s/Christ’s sovereign reign, not a political or territorial kingdom.
2 Timothy 4:2
κήρυξον τὸν λόγον, ἐπίστηθι εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως, ἔλεγξον, ἐπιτίμησον, παρακάλεσον, ἐν πάσῃ μακροθυμίᾳ καὶ διδαχῇ
κήρυξον τὸν λόγον (kēryxon ton logon)
- Transliteration: kēryxon ton logon
- Literal meaning: herald/proclaim the word! (aorist imperative — a decisive command)
- Semantic range: κηρύσσω = to proclaim as a herald with public authority (not a private opinion); λόγος here = the apostolic message/word of God, the content just described as God-breathed Scripture in 3:16
- English variants: preach the word, proclaim the message, herald the word
- Contextual theological meaning: The central imperative of the entire core passage — the direct, load-bearing statement of the Charge to Preach the Word doctrine, flowing immediately out of the Scripture doctrine of 3:14-17.
- Destination-language rendering: বচন প্রচার কর (bochon prochar kor, “proclaim the word”) — Risk: Critical. বচন (bochon, “word/utterance,” an established Bengali Bible term for λόγος as divine message) must be distinguished from generic কথা (mere “talk/words”); প্রচার কর reuses the established mission vocabulary root also present in baseline’s সুসমাচার প্রচার (mission/proclamation, Medium risk in baseline, elevated to Critical here because this is the curriculum’s central charge verse and must be rendered identically every time it recurs).
ἐπίστηθι εὐκαίρως ἀκαίρως
- Literal meaning: stand upon/be ready, in season, out of season
- Semantic range: ἐφίστημι = to stand at, be at hand, be ready; εὐκαίρως/ἀκαίρως = a fixed idiomatic antithesis meaning “whether convenient or not,” “at all times regardless of circumstance”
- English variants: be ready in season and out of season, be persistent whether convenient or not
- Contextual theological meaning: Preaching the word is not contingent on favorable social conditions — directly relevant to the pastoral reality of preaching in a religiously plural, sometimes hostile, Bengali context.
- Destination-language rendering: সময়ে অসময়ে প্রস্তুত থাক (shomoye oshomoye prostut thak, “be ready in season and out of season”) — Risk: Medium. This Bengali idiom pair (সময়ে অসময়ে) is a natural, well-understood equivalent; per the baseline’s idiom-handling rule, this is preferred over a literal but opaque rendering.
ἔλεγξον, ἐπιτίμησον, παρακάλεσον (reprove, rebuke, exhort)
- Transliteration: elenxon, epitimēson, parakaleson
- Literal meaning: ἐλέγχω = expose/convict of fault with evidence; ἐπιτιμάω = rebuke sharply, censure with authority; παρακαλέω = call alongside, encourage/exhort/entreat
- Semantic range: a three-part pastoral sequence moving from exposing error, to authoritative correction, to constructive encouragement
- English variants: reprove/convict, rebuke/censure, exhort/encourage
- Contextual theological meaning: Preaching the word is not merely informational; it confronts sin and error (guarding sound doctrine in pastoral practice) while remaining constructive.
- Destination-language rendering:
- ἐλέγχω → দোষ ধরিয়ে দাও (dosh dhoriye dao, “point out/expose the fault”) — Risk: Medium.
- ἐπιτιμάω → তীব্রভাবে সতর্ক কর (tibrobhabe shotorko kor, “sharply warn/rebuke”) — Risk: Medium.
- παρακαλέω → REUSE (baseline) উৎসাহিত করা (“encourage,” per baseline’s context-sensitive note: উৎসাহিত করা for building up, contrasted with বিনতি for beseeching). Risk: Low.
ἐν πάσῃ μακροθυμίᾳ καὶ διδαχῇ (with complete patience and teaching)
- μακροθυμία → ধৈর্য্য (dhoirjyo, “patience/longsuffering”) — Risk: Low.
- διδαχή → শিক্ষা (shikkha, “teaching”) — Risk: Low.
- Contextual theological meaning: Correction (Guarding Sound Doctrine) must be exercised patiently and didactically, not harshly — restrains any triumphalist or confrontational tone, which matters given the sensitivity flagged in the baseline around evangelism tone in Bangladesh/West Bengal.
2 Timothy 4:3
ἔσται γὰρ καιρὸς ὅτε τῆς ὑγιαινούσης διδασκαλίας οὐκ ἀνέξονται, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὰς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας ἑαυτοῖς ἐπισωρεύσουσιν διδασκάλους κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν
ὑγιαίνουσα διδασκαλία (hygiainousa didaskalia)
- Transliteration: hygiainousa didaskalia
- Literal meaning: healthy/sound teaching (ὑγιαίνω = “to be healthy,” the verb behind “hygiene”)
- Semantic range: a medical metaphor applied to doctrine: teaching that produces and preserves spiritual health, as opposed to teaching that is diseased/corrupting
- English variants: sound doctrine, sound teaching, healthy teaching
- Contextual theological meaning: The direct namesake term of the Guarding Sound Doctrine doctrine. The coming apostasy (4:3-4) is defined precisely as an unwillingness to tolerate this health-giving teaching.
- Destination-language rendering: সুস্থ শিক্ষা (shustho shikkha, “healthy teaching”) — Risk: High. Alternatives rejected: ধর্মমত (dhormomot, “religious creed/doctrine” — collides with ধর্ম’s dual Hindu-dharma/generic-religion sense, exactly the reasoning behind the baseline’s rejection of ধর্ম for righteousness); নির্ভুল শিক্ষা (“error-free teaching” — doctrinally acceptable but loses ὑγιαίνω’s vivid health/vitality metaphor, which matters pastorally for describing what apostasy does to a congregation). সুস্থ শিক্ষা preserves the medical metaphor and must be used identically at 1:13’s ὑγιαινόντων λόγων (“sound words,” rendered সুস্থ বচন).
οὐκ ἀνέξονται (ouk anexontai)
- Literal meaning: they will not endure/put up with
- Semantic range: ἀνέχομαι = to bear with, tolerate, patiently endure something (often unpleasant)
- Contextual theological meaning: The last-days condition is not mere disbelief but active intolerance of sound teaching — a sharper claim than simple unbelief.
- Destination-language rendering: সহ্য করবে না (shoyho korbe na, “will not tolerate/endure”) — Risk: Medium.
κατὰ τὰς ἰδίας ἐπιθυμίας … κνηθόμενοι τὴν ἀκοήν (“itching ears”)
- Transliteration: kata tas idias epithymias … knēthomenoi tēn akoēn
- Literal meaning: according to their own desires … having their hearing itched/tickled
- Semantic range: κνήθω = to itch, scratch, tickle; a vivid idiom for a craving to hear only what is pleasing and flattering
- English variants: itching ears, ears that itch to hear what they want
- Contextual theological meaning: Names the psychological mechanism of apostasy: consumer-driven teacher-selection based on private desire, not truth — central to Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days.
- Destination-language rendering: কান চুলকানো (kan chulkano, “itching ears”) — Risk: Medium. This idiom translates with surprising directness into Bengali, where “কান চুলকানো” (literally “ears itching”) is an intelligible image of a craving to hear something specific/flattering; per the baseline’s idiom-handling rule (natural equivalent preferred over literal-but-opaque rendering, but doctrinal content preserved over naturalness where they conflict), this direct image is both natural and doctrinally accurate, so no compromise is required here.
ἐπισωρεύσουσιν διδασκάλους (“accumulate teachers for themselves”) — জমা করবে শিক্ষক (joma korbe shikkhok, “will pile up/accumulate teachers”) — Risk: Medium. Conveys the shopping/collecting behavior, not a single false teacher but a proliferation sought out by the hearer.
2 Timothy 4:4
καὶ ἀπὸ μὲν τῆς ἀληθείας τὴν ἀκοὴν ἀποστρέψουσιν, ἐπὶ δὲ τοὺς μύθους ἐκτραπήσονται
ἀποστρέψουσιν (apostrephō)
- Transliteration: apostrepsousin
- Literal meaning: they will turn away/avert
- Semantic range: a deliberate turning of one’s face or attention away from something; the root ἀπο- + στρέφω underlies the theological vocabulary of apostasy (ἀποστασία, though that noun is not used here)
- English variants: turn away, avert their ears
- Contextual theological meaning: A decisive, willful rejection of truth already known — not ignorance but apostasy. Directly names the doctrine of Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days.
- Destination-language rendering: মুখ ফিরিয়ে নেবে (mukh firiye nebe, “will turn their face away”) — Risk: High. Must retain the sense of willful, culpable rejection of previously-held truth, not innocent forgetting or gradual drift.
ἐκτραπήσονται (ektrepō)
- Literal meaning: they will be turned aside/diverted
- Semantic range: a route/path metaphor — being diverted from the correct road onto a wrong one
- English variants: wander off, turn aside, be diverted
- Destination-language rendering: বিপথে চলে যাবে (bipothe chole jabe, “will go astray/onto a wrong path”) — Risk: High. Doctrine: Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days.
μύθους (mythous)
- Transliteration: mythoi
- Literal meaning: myths, fables, fictitious tales
- Semantic range: invented stories lacking historical/factual grounding, contrasted with ἀλήθεια (truth); used elsewhere in the Pastorals (1 Tim 1:4, 4:7; Titus 1:14) for speculative false teaching
- English variants: myths, fables, fictitious tales, made-up stories
- Contextual theological meaning: The alternative content that fills the vacuum when sound doctrine is rejected — not necessarily formal mythology but any doctrinally invented substitute for apostolic truth.
- Destination-language rendering: কল্পকথা (kalpokotha, “fictional/invented tale”) — Risk: Medium. Deliberately generic; avoid রূপকথা/পুরাণকথা-style renderings that name specific Hindu epic/mythological genres (পুরাণ), which would risk sounding like a specific denunciation of Hindu sacred narrative rather than a general category of doctrinal fabrication. Keep the term broad and content-neutral.
2 Timothy 4:5
σὺ δὲ νῆφε ἐν πᾶσιν, κακοπάθησον, ἔργον ποίησον εὐαγγελιστοῦ, τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον
νῆφε (nēphō)
- Transliteration: nēphe
- Literal meaning: be sober, be watchful, be clear-headed (literally, not intoxicated)
- Semantic range: metaphorical spiritual alertness/clear-headedness, guarding against being carried along by prevailing error
- English variants: be sober-minded, be watchful, keep a clear head
- Contextual theological meaning: The posture required to resist the drift into apostasy just described (4:3-4) and to carry out the charge of 4:2.
- Destination-language rendering: সজাগ থাক (sojag thak, “be watchful/alert”) — Risk: Low.
κακοπάθησον (kakopatheō)
- Transliteration: kakopathēson
- Literal meaning: suffer hardship, endure evil/affliction
- Semantic range: κακός (bad/evil) + πάθος (suffering); enduring difficult, painful circumstances for the sake of the ministry
- English variants: endure hardship, suffer affliction, bear up under suffering
- Contextual theological meaning: Direct namesake vocabulary of Perseverance under Suffering — links the charge to preach (4:2) to the cost of doing so, echoing 1:8’s συγκακοπάθησον (“share in suffering for the gospel”) and 2:3’s στρατιώτης (soldier) metaphor.
- Destination-language rendering: কষ্ট সহ্য কর (kosto shoyho kor, “endure suffering/hardship”) — Risk: Medium. Doctrine: Perseverance under Suffering. Must not be reduced to mere inconvenience; the term covers real persecution (cf. 3:11-12).
ἔργον ποίησον εὐαγγελιστοῦ (ergon poiēson euangelistou)
- Literal meaning: do the work of an evangelist
- Semantic range: εὐαγγελιστής, built on the εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) root, a person whose function is proclaiming the gospel — an established but relatively rare NT ministry title (cf. Acts 21:8; Eph 4:11)
- English variants: do the work of an evangelist
- Contextual theological meaning: Ties the Charge to Preach the Word to active gospel proclamation specifically (not teaching alone), reinforcing Faithful Transmission of the Gospel.
- Destination-language rendering: সুসমাচার প্রচারকের কাজ কর (susomachar procharoker kaj kor, “do the work of a gospel-proclaimer”) — Risk: Medium. সুসমাচার is REUSE (baseline, High risk, Critical never ইঞ্জিল); the compound সুসমাচার প্রচারক (“evangelist”) is a natural, transparent Bengali coinage built entirely from already-established vocabulary.
τὴν διακονίαν σου πληροφόρησον
- Literal meaning: fulfill/fully carry out your ministry
- Semantic range: διακονία = service/ministry (a functional term, not a hierarchical office title); πληροφορέω = to fill completely, carry out fully, bring to completion
- English variants: fulfill your ministry, discharge all the duties of your ministry
- Contextual theological meaning: Closes the core passage’s charge with a summons to complete, not merely begin, the assigned ministry — anticipates 4:7’s “I have finished the race.”
- Destination-language rendering: তোমার সেবাকাজ সম্পূর্ণরূপে সম্পন্ন কর (tomar sebakaj shompurnorupe shompanno kor, “completely carry out your service/ministry”) — Risk: Medium. সেবাকাজ (service/ministry) reuses the same root used in the baseline’s “Christ-Centered Ministry” doctrine notes; retain the “in Christ’s name and power” framing established there so this is not read as generic humanitarian service.
PART 2 — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book
Chapter 1 (2 Timothy 1:1–18)
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Bengali rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἀπόστολος | apostolos | one sent out | authorized, sent messenger | apostle | Paul’s authority for this letter’s charge | REUSE (baseline) প্রেরিত | Medium |
| θέλημα θεοῦ | thelēma theou | will/desire of God | God’s purposive intention | will of God | Paul’s apostleship is by God’s will, not self-appointment | ঈশ্বরের ইচ্ছা (Ishshorer ichchha) | Medium — must not be read as impersonal fate (নিয়তি), cf. baseline’s providence caution |
| ἐπαγγελία ζωῆς | epangelia zōēs | promise of life | a guaranteed pledge concerning life | promise of life | Life “in Christ Jesus” is a covenant promise, not a vague hope | জীবনের প্রতিশ্রুতি (jiboner protishruti) | Medium |
| χάρις, ἔλεος, εἰρήνη | charis, eleos, eirēnē | grace, mercy, peace | triadic greeting formula unique to the Pastorals (adds ἔλεος to Paul’s usual χάρις/εἰρήνη) | grace, mercy, peace | grace (unmerited favor) reused; mercy is compassion toward the wretched; peace is REUSE | χάρις: REUSE অনুগ্রহ (Critical); ἔλεος: দয়া (doya, “mercy/compassion”) — new term, Risk Medium, must be distinguished from অনুগ্রহ (grace = unmerited favor granted; মমতা/দয়া = compassion shown toward suffering/need — related but conceptually distinct, both must avoid পুণ্য); εἰρήνη: REUSE শান্তি (Medium) | — |

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις | en eschatais hēmerais | in the last days | the eschatological period between Christ’s first and second comings, not necessarily the final moment before the end | in the last days | Names the eschatological setting shared by the doctrine “Apostasy and False Teachers in the Last Days” | শেষ কালে (shesh kale, “in the last time/days”) | High — must be understood as the present church age generally (already inaugurated), not exclusively a future final crisis, to avoid readers dismissing 3:1-9 as irrelevant to their own moment |
| καιροὶ χαλεποί | kairoi chalepoi | difficult/dangerous times | seasons of hardship, danger, moral peril | difficult times, perilous times | Sets the tone for the vice list that follows | কঠিন সময় (kothin shomoy) | Low |
| φίλαυτοι, φιλάργυροι, ἀλαζόνες, ὑπερήφανοι, βλάσφημοι, ἀχάριστοι, ἀνόσιοι, ἄστοργοι, διάβολοι, ἀκρατεῖς, ἀνήμεροι, ἀφιλάγαθοι, προδόται, προπετεῖς, τετυφωμένοι, φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι | (vice list) | self-lovers, money-lovers, boastful, arrogant, abusive/blasphemous, ungrateful, unholy, without natural affection, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, hating good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, pleasure-lovers rather than God-lovers | an 18-item catalogue of last-days character, several built on φιλ- (love/devotion to the wrong object) | lovers of self/money/pleasure rather than God, etc. | The list’s climax, φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι (“lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God”), directly names misdirected devotion — a live category for readers evaluating any religious devotion (bhakti or otherwise) not directed at the true God | Render as a descriptive Bengali list (আত্মপ্রেমী, অর্থপ্রেমী, দাম্ভিক, অহংকারী, নিন্দুক, অকৃতজ্ঞ, অপবিত্র, নির্দয়, অপবাদক, অসংযত, নিষ্ঠুর, ভালোর বিরোধী, বিশ্বাসঘাতক, দুঃসাহসী, গর্বিত, ঈশ্বরপ্রেমী না হয়ে সুখপ্রেমী) | Medium (list, cumulative) — no single term Critical, but φιλόθεος’s contrast term is worth flagging: it presumes a single true referent for “God” (ঈশ্বর, REUSE, Critical) against which misdirected loves are compared |
| μόρφωσιν εὐσεβείας, τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι | morphōsin eusebeias, tēn de dynamin autēs ērnēmenoi | having a form/outward shape of godliness but having denied its power | outward religious appearance without the substance/effect | a form of godliness, but denying its power | The single sharpest phrase in the vice list for Apostasy and False Teachers — outward piety without transformative reality | εὐσέβεια: ভক্তি (bhokti, “godliness/devotion” — the mainstream established Bengali Bible rendering); μόρφωσις: বাহ্যিক রূপ (bahyik rup, “external form”); δύναμις: REUSE সামর্থ্য (never শক্তি) | εὐσέβεια: High — ভক্তি is deeply associated in Bengali religious culture with Hindu bhakti devotionalism (personal, emotional devotion to a chosen deity such as Krishna or Kali, often expressed through kirtan and ritual worship); while ভক্তি is the established mainstream Bengali Christian rendering and should be retained for consistency, every occurrence in teaching material should anchor the referent explicitly as the one true God of Scripture to prevent bhakti-devotional framing from supplying the content. δύναμις: Critical (forbidden-substitution list) |
| ἐνδύνουσιν εἰς τὰς οἰκίας, αἰχμαλωτίζοντες γυναικάρια | endynousin eis tas oikias, aichmalōtizontes gynaikaria | creep into houses, capturing/taking captive weak women | predatory infiltration tactics of false teachers | creep into households and capture weak women | A concrete social-dynamics warning relevant to Apostasy and False Teachers | ঘরে ঘরে ঢুকে দুর্বল স্ত্রীলোকদের বন্দী করা (ghore ghore dhuke durbol strilokder bondi kora) | Medium |

| πάντες οἱ θέλοντες εὐσεβῶς ζῆν ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ διωχθήσονται | pantes hoi thelontes eusebōs zēn en Christō Iēsou diōchthēsontai | all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted | a universal principle, not an exceptional case | everyone who desires to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted | Core doctrinal statement of Perseverance under Suffering — persecution is the expected norm, not the anomaly, for faithful discipleship | যারা খ্রীষ্ট যীশুতে ভক্তিপূর্ণ জীবন যাপন করতে চায়, তারা সবাই নির্যাতিত হবে | High — universal “all/everyone” claim; per baseline’s universality-preservation rule, must not be softened |

Chapter 4, Section 2: 4:6–22 (4:1–5 is treated as the Core Passage above)
| Term (Greek) | Transliteration | Literal meaning | Semantic range | English variants | Contextual theological meaning | Bengali rendering | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ἐγὼ … σπένδομαι | egō … spendomai | I am being poured out (as a libation) | a sacrificial drink-offering image (cf. Numbers 28; Philippians 2:17) applied to Paul’s approaching martyrdom | I am being poured out as a libation/drink offering | Paul frames his death as a completed offering of his life in service to Christ — closely tied to Assurance of Reward (4:7-8) | উৎসর্গরূপে ঢেলে দেওয়া হচ্ছি (utshorgorupe dhele deoya hoichi, “being poured out as an offering”) | High — must be anchored clearly as OT sacrificial-offering imagery (already established biblical vocabulary) rather than read through the lens of any Hindu ritual libation practice (e.g., tarpan); a brief translator note on the OT drink-offering background is recommended |
| ὁ καιρὸς τῆς ἀναλύσεώς μου | ho kairos tēs analyseōs mou | the time of my departure | ἀνάλυσις = a nautical/military metaphor for “loosing” (a ship from anchor, a camp being struck) — a euphemism for death | the time of my departure has come | Death reframed as a purposeful departure/release, not defeat — supports Assurance of Reward | আমার প্রস্থানের সময় এসেছে (amar prosthaner shomoy eshechhe) | Medium |
| τὸν καλὸν ἀγῶνα ἠγώνισμαι, τὸν δρόμον τετέλεκα, τὴν πίστιν τετήρηκα | ton kalon agōna ēgōnismai, ton dromon teteleka, tēn pistin tetērēka | I have fought the good fight, finished the race, kept the faith | three perfect-tense verbs of completed accomplishment, echoing the athlete metaphor of 2:5 | I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith | Paul’s summary self-assessment at life’s end — the thematic climax of Perseverance under Suffering and the direct setup for Assurance of Reward | উত্তম যুদ্ধ করেছি, দৌড় সমাপ্ত করেছি, বিশ্বাস রক্ষা করেছি | High — πίστις REUSE বিশ্বাস (High); τηρέω here (“kept”) must convey persevering guardianship of faith to the end, echoing φυλάσσω/παραθήκη vocabulary from ch.1 |
| ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης στέφανος | ho tēs dikaiosynēs stephanos | the crown of righteousness | στέφανος = a victor’s wreath (athletic/civic honor, not a royal crown, διάδημα); an eschatological reward metaphor | the crown of righteousness | The direct namesake image of Assurance of Reward — awarded by the Lord (as righteous judge, 4:8b) for faithful perseverance, not the basis of justification itself | ধার্মিকতার মুকুট (dharmikotar mukut) | High — ধার্মিকতা REUSE (Critical, Salvation doctrine); a translator/teaching note is required distinguishing this eschatological reward for a life of faithful perseverance from the forensic, once-for-all justification (baseline’s ধার্মিক বলে গণ্য হওয়া) received by faith alone apart from works — the two uses of ধার্মিকতা-related vocabulary must not be collapsed into one another |
| ὃν ἀποδώσει μοι ὁ κύριος … δίκαιος κριτής | hon apodōsei moi ho kyrios … dikaios kritēs | which the Lord will award/repay to me … the righteous judge | ἀποδίδωμι = to give back/repay what is owed or promised, not an arbitrary gift | which the Lord … the righteous judge, will award to me | κύριος REUSE; κριτής introduces judge-vocabulary matching 4:1 | κύριος: REUSE প্রভু (Critical); κριτής: ন্যায়বিচারক (nyayobichareaker, “righteous/just judge”) | High — κριτής/δίκαιος: adjectival ন্যায় here modifies “judge” (justice/fairness of the judge), a distinct grammatical use from the baseline’s rejection of ন্যায় as a noun-substitute for the doctrinal term “righteousness” (ধার্মিকতা); flag for native-speaker review to confirm no confusion arises in context |
| πᾶσι τοῖς ἠγαπηκόσι τὴν ἐπιφάνειαν αὐτοῦ | pasi tois ēgapēkosi tēn epiphaneian autou | to all who have loved his appearing | a settled, ongoing love for Christ’s future return, shared by all faithful believers, not Paul alone | to all who have loved his appearing | Universalizes the reward beyond Paul — every believer who longs for Christ’s return shares this assurance; ἐπιφάνεια here is the future pole (matches 4:1) | যারা তাঁর প্রকাশকে প্রেম করেছে সবাইকে (jara tar prokashke prem korechhe shobaike) | High — ἐπιφάνεια see full treatment at 4:1 |
| Δημᾶς … ἀγαπήσας τὸν νῦν αἰῶνα ἐγκατέλιπέν με | Dēmas … agapēsas ton nyn aiōna enkatelipen me | Demas … having loved the present age, deserted me | αἰών (age/world-order) contrasted with Christ’s ἐπιφάνεια just mentioned — a this-worldly love displacing love for Christ’s return | Demas … having loved this present world, has deserted me | A named, cautionary example of apostasy under pressure, contrasted immediately with Paul’s perseverance — reinforces both Perseverance under Suffering and Apostasy and False Teachers | এই বর্তমান জগৎকে প্রেম করে দীমা আমাকে ত্যাগ করেছে (ei bortoman jagatke prem kore Dima amake tyag korechhe) | High — αἰών (age/world-order): render as বর্তমান জগৎ (“present world”) rather than বর্তমান যুগ (“present age/era”); যুগ is flagged as a risk because in Bengali Hindu cosmology যুগ specifically denotes one of the four cyclical cosmic ages (Satya, Dvapara, Tretā, Kali Yuga), which would misleadingly frame Paul’s “this present age” within a cyclical-time cosmology rather than the linear biblical salvation-history framework the baseline already protects elsewhere (cf. baseline’s Fulfillment of Prophecy doctrine note on linear vs. cyclical cosmology) |
| ὁ δὲ κύριός μοι παρέστη καὶ ἐνεδυνάμωσέν με | ho de kyrios moi parestē kai enedynamōsen me | but the Lord stood by me and strengthened me | personal divine presence and empowerment in isolation/abandonment | but the Lord stood by me and strengthened me | Direct pastoral comfort for isolated believers — κύριος REUSE; δύναμις-root REUSE সামর্থ্য | প্রভু আমার পাশে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন ও আমাকে শক্তিশালী… [caution] | Critical — must avoid শক্তি-based verb forms for ἐνδυναμόω per the baseline’s forbidden-substitution rule; render as আমাকে সামর্থ্য দিয়েছিলেন/সবল করেছিলেন (gave me strength/made me able), never শক্তিশালী করা |
| ἐρρύσθην ἐκ στόματος λέοντος | errysthēn ek stomatos leontos | I was rescued from the lion’s mouth | a vivid deliverance idiom (cf. Psalm 22:21; Daniel 6), likely referring to imminent mortal danger at trial | rescued from the lion’s mouth | God’s deliverance in the midst of persecution — Perseverance under Suffering with a note of present rescue alongside eventual martyrdom | সিংহের মুখ থেকে উদ্ধার পেয়েছি (shingher mukh theke uddhar peyechhi) | Medium |
| ῥύσεταί με ὁ κύριος ἀπὸ παντὸς ἔργου πονηροῦ καὶ σώσει εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐπουράνιον | rhysetai me ho kyrios apo pantos ergou ponērou kai sōsei eis tēn basileian autou tēn epouranion | the Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and save/bring me into his heavenly kingdom | ultimate, final deliverance and safe arrival, distinct from the present rescues just described | the Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom | Climactic Assurance-of-Reward statement, joining σῴζω (REUSE পরিত্রাণ-root) and βασιλεία (REUSE ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য convention → স্বর্গীয় রাজ্য, “heavenly kingdom”) | প্রভু আমাকে সকল মন্দ কাজ থেকে উদ্ধার করবেন এবং তাঁর স্বর্গীয় রাজ্যে নিরাপদে নিয়ে যাবেন | Critical |

| Πρίσκα καὶ Ἀκύλας, Ὀνησίφορος, Ἔραστος, Τρόφιμος, Κάρπος, Εὔβουλος, Πούδης, Λίνος, Κλαυδία (proper names, 4:9-21) | — | personal names of co-workers, deserters, and greeters | — | — | No independent theological content; low risk. Render each in its established Bengali Bible proper-name transliteration; consistency across documents matters for cross-reference but no doctrinal risk attaches. | (transliterate per Bengali Bible convention, e.g., প্রিষ্কা, আক্বিলা, অনীষিফর, ইরাস্ত, ত্রফিম, কার্প, ইউবুল, পুদেন্স, লীন, ক্লদিয়া) | Low |
