Semantic Analysis

Semantic Analysis: 2 Thessalonians (Full Book) in Koine Greek

Method and Scope

This document analyzes 2 Thessalonians in its entirety, chapter by chapter, first to last. The core passage, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (The Man of Lawlessness / The Day of the Lord), receives verse-by-verse treatment. Every other chapter receives a chapter-level study of its load-bearing theological terms with the same analytical fields: original Greek word, transliteration, literal meaning, semantic range, English variants, contextual theological meaning in 2 Thessalonians, and destination-language (Bengali) rendering risk.

Governing rule: Any term already fixed in the baseline Romans translation_memory.json or bible_term_registry.json MUST be reused with its exact recorded Bengali rendering. This document flags such reuse explicitly (“Reused from Romans baseline”) and does not re-argue settled baseline decisions. New terms unique to, or newly load-bearing in, 2 Thessalonians receive full risk analysis here and are candidates for addition to translation memory in Phase 2.

PART A — Core Passage: 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 (Verse-by-Verse)

Theological Overview

This passage is the doctrinal spine of 2 Thessalonians: Paul corrects a false report that “the Day of the Lord” has already arrived, and grounds his correction in a sequence of end-time events — apostasy, the revealing of “the man of lawlessness,” a present restraining influence, and the lawless one’s Satan-empowered false parousia — culminating in God’s righteous judgment on those who reject the truth. Nearly every clause is Critical or High risk because it concerns Christology (the true παρουσία), the identity and character of the eschatological adversary, and the mechanics of divine judgment — all territory where Bengali Hindu (avatar-cycle, cosmic dissolution) and Muslim (denial of a personal antichrist figure in this form, differing eschatology) frameworks could distort meaning if imprecise vocabulary is used.

2 Thessalonians 2:1

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
παρουσία
parousia
”presence,” “arrival”
A ruler’s official/state arrival; in NT, Christ’s visible return in glory
coming, arrival, advent
The Second Coming of Christ — the touchstone event of NT eschatologyCritical. Render আগমন (agomon) consistently for both Christ’s true parousia (2:1, 2:8) and the lawless one’s false parousia (2:9) to preserve Paul’s deliberate ironic mirroring. Risk of translators unconsciously switching words for the counterfeit “coming,” which would erase the literary/theological parallel Paul intends.
κύριος
kyrios
”lord,” “master”
Owner, sovereign, deity-title
Lord
Reused from Romans baseline — প্রভু (provu). Exclusive supreme Lordship of Christ.Critical (baseline-established)
Ἰησοῦς Χριστός
Iēsous Christos
proper name + title
—
Jesus Christ
Reused from Romans baseline — যীশু খ্রীষ্ট.Critical (baseline-established)
ἐπισυναγωγή
episynagōgē
”gathering together”
Assembling, congregating (cognate of συναγωγή, “synagogue”)
our being gathered together to him
The rapture-adjacent gathering of believers to Christ at his coming, distinct from মণ্ডলী (church) as an ongoing institutionMedium. Render সমবেত হওয়া (“being gathered together”); must not be confused with মণ্ডলী (established church term) or with সমাজ (Bengali word that can evoke a Hindu/Muslim community-assembly sense).
ἀδελφοί
adelphoi
”brothers”
Kin term extended to fellow believers
brothers, brethren
Familial address within the believing communityLow. ভাইয়েরা (bhaiyera). Standard, no doctrinal risk.

2 Thessalonians 2:2

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ἡμέρα τοῦ κυρίου
hēmera tou kyriou
”day of the Lord”
OT prophetic technical term for God’s decisive intervention in judgment and salvation
Day of the Lord, day of Christ
The climactic day of Christ’s return, judgment of the wicked, and vindication of the church — the central named doctrine of this curriculumCritical. Render প্রভুর দিন (provur din), built from established প্রভু (Lord). MUST NOT be rendered with কিয়ামত (the Qur’anic Judgment Day term, denoting a specific Islamic eschatological framework of resurrection and weighed deeds) nor with যুগান্ত/কল্পান্ত (Hindu cyclical end-of-age/cosmic-dissolution terms). প্রভুর দিন keeps the phrase transparently built on the already-established, doctrinally safe প্রভু.
σαλευθῆναι (σαλεύω)
saleuthēnai
”to be shaken”
Physical shaking (of a ship, a foundation); figuratively, mental/emotional destabilization
be shaken, be unsettled
Believers’ minds being destabilized by false eschatological claimsLow. বিচলিত হওয়া (bicholito howa).
θροεῖσθαι (θροέω)
throeisthai
”to be troubled/alarmed”
Cry out in fear, be thrown into alarm
be troubled, be alarmed, be frightened
Emotional/psychological alarm at false end-times rumorsLow. উদ্বিগ্ন হওয়া (udbigno howa).
ἐνέστηκεν (ἐνίστημι)
enestēken
”has come,” “is present” (perfect tense — a settled state)
To stand in, to be now present/imminent
is at hand, has come, is already here
The false claim being corrected: NOT that the Day is merely near, but that it has ALREADY arrivedHigh. Must render with a completed/settled-state verb — উপস্থিত হয়েছে (“has [already] arrived”) rather than আসছে (“is coming”) — since Paul’s entire argument in vv. 3-12 depends on refuting the claim that the Day is already present. Softening the tense would blunt the corrective force of the passage.
πνεῦμα (here, “a spirit”)
pneuma
”spirit,” “utterance”
A purported prophetic utterance/message
by spirit
A false claim to prophetic revelation about the Day’s arrivalMedium. Distinguish from পবিত্র আত্মা (Holy Spirit, established baseline term) — here it denotes a spurious spiritual claim, not the Holy Spirit himself; render আত্মার দ্বারা (a message claimed to be “by [a] spirit”) with lowercase sense, and flag for translator note to avoid implying the genuine Holy Spirit made this false claim.

2 Thessalonians 2:3

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ἐξαπατήσῃ (ἐξαπατάω)
exapatēsē
”deceive thoroughly”
Intensified form of ἀπατάω, “to deceive/defraud”
deceive, delude
Warns against being taken in by false eschatological teachingMedium. প্রতারিত করা (protarito kora).
ἀποστασία
apostasia
”a standing away from,” “defection”
Political/military revolt; religious defection/rebellion
apostasy, rebellion, falling away
A great end-time falling-away from the faith preceding the Day of the LordHigh. Recommend বিশ্বাসত্যাগ (bishwas-tyag, “abandonment of faith” — literally “faith” + “abandonment”), built cleanly on the established baseline term বিশ্বাস (faith). Rejected: ধর্মভ্রষ্টতা (contains the ধর্ম root the baseline explicitly flags as confusing “religion” with right-standing-before-God); বিদ্রোহ (rebellion, too generic/political, loses the specifically religious defection sense).
ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας
anthrōpos tēs anomias
”man of lawlessness”
Hebraic idiom: a person characterized/defined by a quality
man of sin, man of lawlessness, lawless one
The eschatological adversary/Antichrist figure, defined by rebellion against God’s moral orderCritical. Recommend ব্যবস্থাহীনতার মানুষ (bebosthahinota’r manush), built on the baseline-established ব্যবস্থা (Mosaic Law/God’s law) + হীনতা (“-lessness”). Rejected: অধর্মের মানুষ (root-shares ধর্ম, which the baseline flags as conflating “religion” with righteousness — same collision risk applies to its negation); পাপপুরুষ (traditional but narrows “lawlessness,” which is rebellion against God’s whole moral-covenantal order, to mere “sin” in a generic sense). Requires theologian review per baseline escalation rules (parallels Messianic Promise/Deity of Christ-tier sensitivity, since this figure is a direct anti-type of Christ).
ἀνομία
anomia
”lawlessness,” “without-law-ness”
Rejection of, or life outside, God’s law/moral order
lawlessness, iniquity
The defining quality of the eschatological adversary and of the present hidden “mystery” already at work (v.7)High. ব্যবস্থাহীনতা (see above) — coined systematically from established ব্যবস্থা, avoiding the ধর্ম-root ambiguity that the baseline documents for “righteousness” (ধার্মিকতা vs ধর্ম).
υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας
huios tēs apōleias
”son of destruction/perdition”
Hebraic idiom: one destined for/characterized by destruction
son of perdition, son of destruction
Designates the lawless one as inevitably destined for eschatological ruin, NOT a literal genealogical sonCritical. বিনাশের পুত্র (binasher putro). Requires a mandatory translator note explaining this is a Hebrew idiom of destiny/character, not literal sonship — precisely to avoid ANY structural echo of ঈশ্বরের পুত্র (Son of God, baseline Critical term). The parallel construction (“son of X”) must not be allowed to suggest any ontological kinship between this figure and Christ; the note should state plainly that this phrase means “one destined for destruction,” in deliberate antithetical contrast to the Son of God’s eternal glory.
ἀποκαλυφθῇ (ἀποκαλύπτω)
apokalyphthē
”be revealed/unveiled”
Uncovering something previously hidden
be revealed, be disclosed, appear
The lawless one’s public unveiling at the appointed timeMedium. প্রকাশিত হওয়া (prokashito howa). Must render consistently across vv. 3, 6, 8 for narrative coherence.

2 Thessalonians 2:4

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ἀντικείμενος (ἀντίκειμαι)
antikeimenos
”one who lies opposed”
Adversary, opponent
he who opposes, the adversary
The lawless one’s fundamental posture: opposition to GodMedium. বিরোধী (birodhi) or প্রতিপক্ষ (protipokkho, “adversary”).
ὑπεραιρόμενος (ὑπεραίρομαι)
hyperairomenos
”raising oneself above”
Self-exaltation, arrogant self-elevation
exalts himself, sets himself above
Self-deification — claiming the honor due to God aloneHigh. নিজেকে উচ্চ করা / নিজেকে শ্রেষ্ঠ ঘোষণা করা (“exalting/declaring himself supreme”).
σέβασμα
sebasma
”object of worship/reverence”
Any venerated object, idol, or deity
object of worship, that which is worshiped
Every rival claimant to worship, whether pagan deity or otherwiseMedium. পূজার বিষয় (pujar bishoy, “object of worship”) — note: পূজা is the standard Bengali word for Hindu ritual worship (as in Durga Puja); using it here to describe the false worship the lawless one usurps is contextually appropriate (it correctly names idolatrous worship as পূজা) but requires care that readers do not read this as a blanket comment on Hindu religious practice generally rather than end-time false worship specifically.
ναὸς τοῦ θεοῦ
naos tou theou
”temple/sanctuary of God”
The inner sanctuary (distinct from the wider temple courts)
temple of God
Highly debated: a future rebuilt literal temple, the church as God’s dwelling, or God’s throne-presence generallyCritical. Render মন্দির for ναός — this is consistent with existing mainstream Bengali Bible convention, which uses মন্দির for the literal Jerusalem Temple throughout the Old and New Testaments (distinct from মণ্ডলী/গির্জা, reserved for “church”). The baseline’s rejection of মন্দির was specifically as a substitute for ekklesia/church, not a blanket prohibition on মন্দির for an actual temple building. Flag for mandatory theologian review given the identity of “the temple” here is a live interpretive question, AND flag the residual risk that Bengali Hindu-background readers may momentarily picture a Hindu মন্দির; a brief contextual note distinguishing this as “God’s own sanctuary,” not any generic temple, is recommended.
ἀποδεικνύντα (ἀποδείκνυμι)
apodeiknynta
”demonstrating, proclaiming”
To show forth, exhibit as proof
proclaiming himself, showing himself
The lawless one’s self-authenticating claim to deityHigh. নিজেকে ঈশ্বর বলে প্রমাণ করার চেষ্টা করা (“attempting to prove himself to be God”) — must retain the blasphemous, false self-deification force; must not be softened into mere self-promotion.

2 Thessalonians 2:5

Greek: Οὐ μνημονεύετε ὅτι ἔτι ὢν πρὸς ὑμᾶς ταῦτα ἔλεγον ὑμῖν;

No new load-bearing theological term; μνημονεύετε (“remember,” standard vocabulary, Low risk — স্মরণ করা, smôron kora) recalls Paul’s earlier oral teaching. This verse functions as a rhetorical anchor for the preceding doctrinal content, not a new term.

2 Thessalonians 2:6

Greek: καὶ νῦν τὸ κατέχον οἴδατε, εἰς τὸ ἀποκαλυφθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἑαυτοῦ καιρῷ

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
τὸ κατέχον
to katechon
”the restraining [thing]” (neuter participle)
To hold back, hold down, restrain, hold fast
that which restrains, the restraint
An impersonal restraining force/influence delaying the lawless one’s revealing — identity debated (divine providence, Roman governmental order, the proclamation of the gospel, etc.)High. Render নিবারক বিষয় (“the restraining factor/influence”), preserving the neuter/impersonal grammatical form. Requires a translator note flagging that the referent’s precise identity is a genuine, longstanding interpretive debate; the Bengali rendering must preserve this ambiguity rather than silently resolving it toward any one interpretation. Mandatory theologian review per baseline escalation rules (parallels election/providence-tier sensitivity).
καιρός
kairos
”appointed/opportune time”
A qualitatively significant moment, distinct from χρόνος (chronological time)
time, season, appointed time
God’s sovereignly fixed moment for the lawless one’s unveilingMedium. নির্দিষ্ট সময় (“the appointed/fixed time”) — must convey divine appointment, not mere chronological occurrence.

2 Thessalonians 2:7

Greek: τὸ γὰρ μυστήριον ἤδη ἐνεργεῖται τῆς ἀνομίας· μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
μυστήριον τῆς ἀνομίας
mystērion tēs anomias
”mystery/secret of lawlessness”
Paul’s technical term for a previously hidden divine truth now disclosed (elsewhere used positively, e.g., “mystery of the gospel”); here applied ironically to evil
mystery of iniquity, secret power of lawlessness
The hidden, already-operative principle of rebellion against God at work in the present age, prefiguring the lawless one’s full manifestationHigh. Render ব্যবস্থাহীনতার রহস্য (using established রহস্য for “mystery” and the coined ব্যবস্থাহীনতা for “lawlessness”). Flag that Paul’s use of “mystery” (elsewhere a positive revelatory term, cf. Romans-tradition usage) is here turned to describe something evil and hidden — a deliberate ironic reversal that a footnote should preserve rather than obscure.
ὁ κατέχων
ho katechōn
”the one restraining” (masculine participle — a personal agent)
Same root as v.6 but personal/agentival form
he who restrains, the restrainer
A personal agent (not merely an impersonal force) currently holding back the lawless one’s revealingHigh. নিবারণকারী (“the restrainer,” personal). The shift from neuter (v.6) to masculine (v.7) is theologically significant — it suggests a personal agent (many interpreters: the Holy Spirit, or an angelic power) behind the impersonal “restraint.” Bengali grammar does not mark this gender distinction automatically; a translator note is required to preserve this shift, which is easily lost without deliberate lexical choice (e.g., using an explicitly personal construction, “যে ব্যক্তি নিবারণ করছেন,” for v.7 versus an impersonal one, “যা নিবারণ করছে,” for v.6).
ἐκ μέσου γένηται
ek mesou genētai
”come to be out of the midst”
Idiom for removal from a scene/position
is taken out of the way, is removed
The restrainer’s removal, clearing the way for the lawless one’s full revealingMedium. দূর হয়ে যাওয়া / মাঝখান থেকে সরানো (“removed/taken out of the way”).

2 Thessalonians 2:8

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ὁ ἄνομος
ho anomos
”the lawless one”
Substantival adjective from ἀνομία
the lawless one
Shorthand title for the man of lawlessness once fully revealedCritical. ব্যবস্থাহীন ব্যক্তি (“the lawless person”) — consistent with the coined ব্যবস্থাহীনতা term family established above; must be recognizably the same figure introduced in v.3.
ἀνελεῖ (ἀναιρέω)
anelei
”will destroy, do away with, kill”
Remove by killing/annihilating
will slay, will destroy, will do away with
Christ’s total, effortless destruction of the lawless one at his comingHigh. বিনাশ করবেন (“will destroy/annihilate”) — must convey decisive, effortless divine triumph, not a contested battle.
πνεῦμα τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
pneuma tou stomatos autou
”breath/spirit of his mouth”
OT allusion (Isaiah 11:4) to the Messiah’s word as a weapon
breath of his mouth
Christ defeats the lawless one merely by his spoken word — sheer sovereign authorityHigh. তাঁর মুখের নিঃশ্বাস (“the breath of his mouth”) — must not be flattened into a generic figure of speech; retain the OT-messianic allusion to effortless, word-wrought victory.
ἐπιφάνεια τῆς παρουσίας
epiphaneia tēs parousias
”the appearing/manifestation of his coming”
ἐπιφάνεια: a shining-forth, visible manifestation (used of both divine appearances and, in secular Hellenistic usage, of royal state visits)
brightness/splendor of his coming, appearing of his presence
The visible, glorious, unmistakable nature of Christ’s return, in deliberate contrast to the lawless one’s counterfeit and deceptive parousiaCritical. তাঁর আগমনের প্রকাশ (“the manifestation/appearing of his coming”), built on established আগমন (parousia) plus প্রকাশ (revealing/manifestation). Must retain the note that this is a public, undeniable, glorious appearing — the theological antithesis of the lawless one’s deceptive, sign-driven false “coming” in v.9.

2 Thessalonians 2:9

Greek: οὗ ἐστιν ἡ παρουσία κατ᾽ ἐνέργειαν τοῦ Σατανᾶ ἐν πάσῃ δυνάμει καὶ σημείοις καὶ τέρασιν ψεύδους

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
παρουσία (of the lawless one)
parousia
”coming, arrival”
Same word as Christ’s coming (vv.1, 8)
coming, arrival
Paul’s deliberate irony: the lawless one has his own counterfeit “parousia,” patterned after and opposed to Christ’sCritical. Must use the SAME Bengali word, আগমন, as for Christ’s coming (see v.1 note) to preserve the ironic parallel — resist any translator instinct to use a “lesser” word for the counterfeit event, since the literary force of the passage depends on the shared vocabulary.
Σατανᾶς
Satanas
proper name, “adversary” (from Hebrew śāṭān)
The personal, chief spiritual adversary of God and his people
Satan
The direct spiritual empowering source behind the lawless oneMedium. শয়তান (shoytan) — this transliteration is shared across Bengali Christian, Muslim, and general usage; unlike ঈসা/মশীহ, this shared usage is not a doctrinal collision risk since the concept (a personal evil spiritual adversary) is broadly compatible across traditions. Retain as established general Bengali-language usage; no substitution needed.
ἐνέργεια
energeia
”working, operative power”
The active exercise/outworking of a force (distinct from δύναμις, latent capability)
working, operation, power
The active, effective outworking of satanic power behind the lawless one’s counterfeit signsHigh. কার্যকরতা (karyokorota, “operative working”). Must be distinguished from ঈশ্বরের সামর্থ্য (God’s power, baseline-established term reserved exclusively for genuine divine capability).
δύναμις (of Satan)
dynamis
”power, capability”
Same lexical root as the baseline’s “power of God” term
power, might
Satan’s derivative, permitted, but ultimately subordinate and counterfeit power — NOT power on par with God’sCritical — requires deliberate lexical distinction. Recommend NOT using সামর্থ্য here (that term is reserved by baseline convention exclusively for God’s genuine saving power, Romans 1:16) and NOT using শক্তি (forbidden per baseline due to Shakta-goddess associations, and doubly risky here since it could inadvertently valorize demonic power as authentic “spiritual শক্তি” akin to tantric siddhi). Recommend পরাক্রম (porakrom, “might/prowess”) as a third, neutral term reserved specifically for this kind of derivative/counterfeit power, paired with a qualifying adjective such as প্রতারণামূলক (deceptive) — e.g., প্রতারণামূলক পরাক্রম (“deceptive might”). Flag for mandatory theologian review.
σημεῖα καὶ τέρατα ψεύδους
sēmeia kai terata pseudous
”signs and wonders of falsehood”
σημεῖον: a sign pointing to meaning; τέρας: a wonder/portent provoking awe; both qualified here by ψεῦδος, “falsehood/lie”
false signs and wonders, lying signs and wonders
Counterfeit miracles that mimic but do not authenticate divine truthHigh. মিথ্যার চিহ্ন ও আশ্চর্য কাজ (“signs and wondrous deeds of falsehood”). Flag cultural risk: Bengali popular religious culture (folk Hindu and folk Muslim alike) includes vivid traditions of sadhus, fakirs, and pirs performing wonder-works; the word মিথ্যার (“of falsehood”) qualifying চিহ্ন/আশ্চর্য কাজ must never be dropped, or readers may read this verse as validating rather than exposing the deceptive character of such displays.

2 Thessalonians 2:10

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ἀπάτη ἀδικίας
apatē adikias
”deception of unrighteousness”
Deceit that both flows from and produces unrighteous living
deception of wickedness, deceit of unrighteousness
The moral-relational character of the deception — not neutral trickery but deception rooted in rejection of God’s righteousnessHigh. অধার্মিকতার প্রতারণা (“deception of unrighteousness”) — built on the negation of the baseline Critical term ধার্মিকতা (righteousness), preserving direct terminological continuity with the Romans package’s central salvation vocabulary.
οἱ ἀπολλύμενοι
hoi apollymenoi
”those who are perishing” (present participle — an ongoing state)
Those on the path to, or already experiencing, destruction/ruin
those who perish, those who are lost
Describes unbelievers’ present trajectory toward final judgment, not a completed fateHigh. যারা বিনষ্ট হচ্ছে (“those who are [currently] perishing”) — must preserve the present, ongoing-process sense; avoid a completed-past rendering that would foreclose any possibility of repentance before the end.
ἀγάπη τῆς ἀληθείας
agapē tēs alētheias
”the love of the truth”
Affectionate embrace/welcome of what is true, not mere intellectual assent
love of the truth
The saving response these people refused: not mere factual acknowledgment but wholehearted embrace of God’s truth in ChristHigh. সত্যের প্রেম, using সত্য (shotyo, “truth” — new term, see glossary) with প্রেম (established Bengali Bible term for ἀγάπη, retained despite its strong Vaishnava bhakti “prema” devotional associations because it is the historically stabilized Bengali Bible rendering; flag per the same methodology the baseline applied to ঈশ্বর).
ἀλήθεια
alētheia
”truth”
That which is real/actual, corresponding to reality; in NT, God’s revealed truth in the gospel
truth
The saving gospel-truth about Christ, contrasted with τὸ ψεῦδος (“the lie,” v.11)High. সত্য (shotyo) — a new term for this curriculum (not in baseline Romans registry, though implicit there). Standard, low ambiguity as a Bengali word, but doctrinally load-bearing here because it stands in direct antithesis to the lawless one’s whole system of deception; must be rendered identically at every occurrence in this passage (vv. 10, 12, 13) to preserve the truth/lie contrast structuring the entire unit.
σωθῆναι (σῴζω)
sōthēnai
”to be saved”
Deliverance/rescue
be saved
Reused from Romans baseline — পরিত্রাণ পাওয়া / সংশ্লিষ্ট verb form of পরিত্রাণ (salvation). NEVER মুক্তি, মোক্ষ, or নাজাত.Critical (baseline-established)

2 Thessalonians 2:11

Greek: καὶ διὰ τοῦτο πέμπει αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ἐνέργειαν πλάνης εἰς τὸ πιστεῦσαι αὐτοὺς τῷ ψεύδει

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ἐνέργεια πλάνης
energeia planēs
”a working of error/delusion”
πλάνη: wandering, straying, deception (root of English “planet,” wandering star)
working of error, a deluding influence, strong delusion
God’s judicial act of actively confirming the unbelieving in the very delusion they preferred over the truthCritical. ভ্রান্তির কার্যকরতা (“the working/operation of delusion”), using the same কার্যকরতা established for ἐνέργεια in v.9, paired with ভ্রান্তি (bhranti, error/delusion). This is theologically sensitive: it is God who sends this — a judicial hardening, not an arbitrary or unjust act, but the natural consequence of having “refused to love the truth” (v.10). Requires mandatory theologian review, since a careless rendering could imply either (a) God directly causes evil belief with no prior human refusal (removing human responsibility) or (b) this is merely permissive rather than a real divine judicial act — both distortions of Paul’s careful sequence in vv.10-12.
πιστεῦσαι τῷ ψεύδει
pisteusai tō pseudei
”to believe the lie”
To place trust/reliance in falsehood
believe the lie, believe what is false
The direct antithesis of πιστεύω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ (v.12) — using the SAME verb, বিশ্বাস (established baseline “faith/believe” term), applied to a false objectHigh. মিথ্যাকে বিশ্বাস করা. Must reuse বিশ্বাস (established) so the vocabulary continuity with “believe the truth” (v.12) and with the baseline faith doctrine is visible — this is a deliberate wordplay in Greek (same verb, opposite objects) that the Bengali must preserve.

2 Thessalonians 2:12

Greek: ἵνα κριθῶσιν πάντες οἱ μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἀλλὰ εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
κριθῶσιν (κρίνω)
krithōsin
”be judged”
Render a verdict, decide a case
be condemned, be judged
The final judicial outcome for those who rejected the truth — ties directly to the doctrine of God’s Righteous Judgment developed further in ch.1Critical. বিচারিত হওয়া / দণ্डিত হওয়া (“be judged/be condemned”) — must carry an unmistakably negative, condemnatory sense in this context (the parallel with εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ, “took pleasure in unrighteousness,” makes clear this is condemnation, not neutral evaluation). Reuse ধার্মিকতা-family vocabulary where possible for consistency (see ch.1 “righteous judgment” analysis).
μὴ πιστεύσαντες τῇ ἀληθείᾳ
mē pisteusantes tē alētheia
”not having believed the truth”
—
those who did not believe the truth
Restates and closes the truth/lie, believe/reject contrast structuring vv.10-12Reuses established বিশ্বাস + সত্য.
εὐδοκήσαντες τῇ ἀδικίᾳ
eudokēsantes tē adikia
”having taken pleasure in unrighteousness”
εὐδοκέω: to be well-pleased with, delight in; ἀδικία: unrighteousness/injustice
took pleasure in wickedness, delighted in unrighteousness
Positive moral preference for wrongdoing, not mere passive failureHigh. অধার্মিকতায় আনন্দ পাওয়া (“took delight/pleasure in unrighteousness”) — built on ধার্মিকতা’s negation, consistent with v.10’s rendering choice; must retain the active, willing preference for evil, not a passive description.

PART B — Chapter-by-Chapter Study of the Whole Book

Chapter 1 — Thanksgiving, Perseverance under Persecution, and God’s Righteous Judgment

2 Thessalonians 1 introduces two of the five named curriculum doctrines (Perseverance under Persecution; God’s Righteous Judgment) and establishes vocabulary that chapter 2 depends on (δόξα/glory, ἀποκάλυψις/revelation).

Self-giving, covenantal love, distinct from erotic or merely familial affection
love, charity
Believers’ love for one another, increasing precisely in a context of sufferingHigh (new term for this curriculum). Render প্রেম (prem) — this is the historically established Bengali Bible rendering for agapē (present in classical Bengali Bible tradition, e.g. John 3:16). Flag explicitly: প্রেম carries a very strong cultural resonance in Bengal with Vaishnava bhakti “prema” — the Radha-Krishna devotional-romantic love tradition central to Bengali Chaitanya Vaishnavism. As with ঈশ্বর in the baseline (Vedantic roots but stabilized Christian usage), long translation history has stabilized প্রেম as the expected Christian term; retain it, but this collision is significant enough that a translator/footnote clarifying “self-giving, covenantal love expressed in mutual care and endurance,” not romantic or devotional passion, is recommended wherever the term is doctrinally load-bearing (as here, and in 3:5’s “the love of God”).
ὑπομονή (1:4)
hypomonē
”patient endurance”
Steadfastness under sustained pressure, not passive resignation
patience, endurance, perseverance
Named-doctrine term: Perseverance under Persecution — active, faith-fueled steadfastness while suffering continuesHigh (new term). Render ধৈর্য (dhoirjyo). Must be qualified in context (e.g., সহ্য করে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকা, “standing firm while enduring”) so as not to be read as mere passivity; the doctrine is active perseverance, not resignation or karmic acceptance of suffering as deserved fate.
διωγμός, θλῖψις (1:4, 1:6)
diōgmos, thlipsis
”persecution,” “affliction/pressure”
Organized hostility/pursuit; general pressure, tribulation
persecutions, afflictions, tribulations
The concrete sufferings the Thessalonian believers were enduringMedium. নিপীড়ন (nipiron, persecution) and ক্লেশ (kles, affliction).
δίκαιον κρίμα / τὸ ἔνδικον (1:5-6)
dikaion krima / to endikon
”righteous judgment” / “the just thing”
δίκαιος: right, just; κρίμα: a judgment/verdict
God’s righteous judgment, it is just
Named-doctrine term: God’s Righteous Judgment — God’s verdict is inherently fair, vindicating the persecuted and condemning persecutorsCritical. Render ধার্মিক বিচার (dharmik bichar), built directly on the baseline Critical term ধার্মিক (righteous, root of ধার্মিকতা). Rejected: ন্যায্য বিচার — although ন্যায্য is a perfectly common Bengali word for “fair/just,” the baseline explicitly lists ন্যায় among rejected alternatives for the righteousness family, so building the doctrine’s core phrase on the established ধার্মিক root instead maintains full terminological consistency with the curriculum’s core soteriological vocabulary.
βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ (1:5)
basileia tou theou
”kingdom of God”
—
kingdom of God
Reused from Romans baseline — ঈশ্বরের রাজ্য. Suffering believers are being made worthy of God’s kingdom.Medium (baseline-established)
ἀνταποδίδωμι (1:6)
antapodidōmi
”to repay/recompense in return”
Repayment, requital (can be positive or negative)
repay, render, recompense
God’s just recompense: affliction to the afflicters, relief to the afflictedHigh. প্রতিফল দেওয়া (protiphol dewa, “to give recompense”) — see also ἐκδίκησις below; keep these two distinct-but-related terms consistent.
ἐκδίκησις (1:8)
ekdikēsis
”vengeance, retributive justice”
Legal/judicial retribution, not personal revenge
vengeance, retribution, just punishment
God’s own righteous retribution against persecutors and unbelievers at Christ’s returnHigh. Render প্রতিফল (protiphol, “just recompense/desert”) rather than প্রতিশোধ (protishodh, “revenge”) or বদলা (bodla, “vengeance/feud-payback” — carries strong connotations of personal or family blood-feud culture in Bengali social contexts). This must be unmistakably God’s judicial act, not human vengeance, and not glorified as an emotionally satisfying payback.
ἄνεσις (1:7)
anesis
”release, relief, rest”
Relaxation from pressure/affliction
relief, rest
The relief promised to persecuted believers at Christ’s returnMedium. বিশ্রাম (bishram, rest) — NOT স্বস্তি, which the baseline records as an explicitly rejected alternative for শান্তি (peace); using it here for a different concept risks blurring two distinct doctrinal terms.
ἀποκάλυψις (1:7)
apokalypsis
”revelation, unveiling”
—
revelation
The visible unveiling of Christ at his return — same root family as ἀποκαλύπτω in ch.2Medium. প্রকাশ (prokash) — keep consistent with ch.2’s প্রকাশিত হওয়া for ἀποκαλύπτω.
ὄλεθρος αἰώνιος (1:9)
olethros aiōnios
”eternal destruction/ruin”
ὄλεθρος: ruin, destruction; αἰώνιος: age-long, eternal
eternal destruction, everlasting ruin
The final, unending judgment on those who reject God and disobey the gospelCritical. Render অনন্ত বিনাশ (ononto binash), using established Bengali Christian অনন্ত (eternal) with বিনাশ (ruin/destruction). MUST NOT use প্রলয় (proloy) — the standard Hindu term for cosmic dissolution/apocalyptic cataclysm (mahapralaya), which frames destruction as a recurring cyclical cosmic event rather than a final, personal, one-time judgment. Flag explicitly as a rejected alternative.
δόξα, ἐνδοξασθῆναι (1:9, 1:10, 1:12)
doxa, endoxasthēnai
”glory,” “to be glorified”
—
glory, be glorified
Reused from Romans baseline — মহিমা (glory) and its verbal form মহিমান্বিত হওয়া (be glorified). Christ’s glory manifested at his return and reflected in his saints.High (baseline-established)
ἅγιοι (1:10)
hagioi
”holy ones”
—
saints
Reused from Romans baseline — পবিত্র লোক. NEVER সাধু/সাধুগণ.High (baseline-established)
ἀξιόω τῆς κλήσεως (1:11)
axiōō tēs klēseōs
”count worthy of the calling”
ἀξιόω: deem worthy; κλῆσις: calling
count you worthy of his calling
Prayer that believers live up to their divine calling — reuses established আহ্বান (calling)High. আহ্বানের যোগ্য গণ্য করা — reuse গণ্য (counted/reckoned) from the baseline’s justification phrase (ধার্মিক বলে গণ্য হওয়া) for lexical consistency, paired with established আহ্বান (calling).
δύναμις (1:11, of God)
dynamis
”power”
—
power
God’s genuine power fulfilling believers’ faith-driven good works — contrast with the counterfeit δύναμις of 2:9High. Reuse established সামর্থ্য (God’s power, baseline-established, never শক্তি) here since this is authentic divine power — reinforcing the deliberate lexical distinction from the counterfeit পরাক্রম recommended for Satan’s power in 2:9.

Chapter 2:13-17 — Salvation, Sanctification, and Standing Firm in the Traditions

The remainder of chapter 2 (beyond the core passage) introduces the fifth named curriculum doctrine directly.

TermsVariantsContextual Theological MeaningBengali Rendering Risk
ἠγαπημένοι ὑπὸ κυρίου (2:13)
ēgapēmenoi hypo kyriou
”beloved by the Lord”
—
beloved of the Lord
Assurance grounded in God’s prior love, not human meritHigh. প্রভুর প্রিয় / প্রভু কর্তৃক প্রেমাস্পদ — built on established প্রেম family.
εἵλατο (αἱρέομαι) (2:13)
heilato
”chose, selected”
To take for oneself, choose
God chose you
God’s sovereign choice unto salvation — same doctrinal territory as Romans’ ἐκλογή (election), though a different Greek verbHigh. Render মনোনীত করা (monōnīto kôra), deliberately built on the baseline election term’s root (ঈশ্বরের মনোনয়ন). This preserves cross-curriculum doctrinal vocabulary consistency even though the underlying Greek word differs from Romans’ ἐκλογή.
σωτηρία (2:13)
sōtēria
”salvation”
—
salvation
Reused from Romans baseline — পরিত্রাণ.Critical (baseline-established)
ἁγιασμὸς πνεύματος (2:13)
hagiasmos pneumatos
”sanctification of the Spirit”
—
sanctification of/by the Spirit
Reused from Romans baseline — পবিত্রীকরণ (sanctification) + পবিত্র আত্মা (Holy Spirit).High/Critical (baseline-established)
πίστις ἀληθείας (2:13)
pistis alētheias
”belief of the truth”
—
belief in the truth
Reuses established বিশ্বাস + সত্য (see core passage v.10 note)High
κλῆσις, εὐαγγέλιον, δόξα (2:14)
klēsis, euangelion, doxa
”calling,” “gospel,” “glory”
—
calling, gospel, glory
Reused from Romans baseline — আহ্বান, সুসমাচার, মহিমা.High (baseline-established)
παραδόσεις (2:15)
paradoseis
”traditions, things handed down”
Authoritative teaching transmitted from one party to another
traditions, teachings
Named-doctrine term: Standing Firm in the Traditions — the authoritative apostolic teaching (oral and written) the Thessalonians receivedHigh (new term, central to a named doctrine). Recommend শিক্ষা (shiksha, “teaching/instruction”) — qualified where needed as প্রেরিতদের শিক্ষা (“apostolic teaching”) or আমাদের দেওয়া শিক্ষা (“the teaching we gave you”) — rather than পরম্পরা (poromporā), which is the standard Bengali Hindu term for a guru-to-disciple lineage of transmitted teaching (guru-paramparā) and would frame apostolic authority within that specific religious transmission model. Also reject ঐতিহ্য (oitihyo, “heritage/custom”), which undersells doctrinal authority by suggesting mere cultural custom. This term requires theologian input given it names one of the five core doctrines of this curriculum.
στηρίζω, παρακαλέω (2:17)
stērizō, parakaleō
”establish, strengthen,” “comfort/exhort”
—
establish, comfort
Reused from Romans baseline pattern — উৎসাহিত করা (exhort/encourage) for παρακαλέω; স্থির করা (make firm/steadfast) for στηρίζω, newly introduced but low-risk, standard vocabulary.Low/Medium

ὁ λόγος τοῦ κυρίου (3:1)
ho logos tou kyriou
”the word of the Lord”
—
word of the Lord
The gospel message’s advance and honor — reuses established প্রভুMedium. প্রভুর বচন/বাক্য (provur bakyo).
πονηροὶ ἄνθρωποι / ὁ πονηρός (3:2, 3:3)
ponēroi anthrōpoi / ho ponēros
”evil/wicked men” / “the evil one”
πονηρός: morally corrupt, actively harmful (distinct from ἁμαρτωλός, “sinner,” a more general term)
wicked/evil men; the evil one (Satan)
Human opposition to the gospel, and, in 3:3, the personal spiritual adversary (Satan) from whom the Lord guards believersMedium/High. দুষ্ট লোক (dushto lok, wicked people) for the human sense; দুষ্ট ব্যক্তি or শয়তান (established, see 2:9 note) for “the evil one” in 3:3 — requires context-sensitive disambiguation since the same adjective covers both a human and a spiritual referent.
πίστις (3:2)
pistis
”faith”
—
faith
Reused from Romans baseline — বিশ্বাস. “Not all have faith.”High (baseline-established)
πιστός (3:3)
pistos
”faithful, trustworthy”
Adjectival form related to πίστις
faithful
The Lord’s own faithfulness/reliability, grounding believers’ confidence — built on established বিশ্বাস rootHigh. বিশ্বাসযোগ্য / বিশ্বস্ত (bishwasyogyo / bishwosto, “faithful/trustworthy”) — deliberately built from established বিশ্বাস for terminological consistency.
πεποίθαμεν (3:4)
pepoithamen
”we have confidence/trust”
Settled confidence based on another’s proven reliability
we have confidence
Paul’s confidence in the Thessalonians’ obedience, grounded in the Lord’s faithfulness (v.3)Low. আমাদের আস্থা আছে (amader astha ache).
ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ, ὑπομονὴ τοῦ Χριστοῦ (3:5)
agapē tou theou, hypomonē tou Christou
”the love of God,” “the endurance/steadfastness of Christ”
—
love of God, patience/steadfastness of Christ
Reuses established প্রেম and ধৈর্য — the objective standard toward which believers’ hearts are directedHigh (see 1:3-4 notes).
ἀτάκτως (περι)πατοῦντας (3:6, 3:11)
ataktōs (peri)patountas
”walking disorderly/out of ranks”
ἄτακτος: originally a military term for a soldier out of formation; by extension, undisciplined, disorderly, idle
walking disorderly, being idle
Community-order concern: believers who had abandoned productive work, apparently citing imminent eschatology as justificationMedium. অলসভাবে চলা / অসংযতভাবে জীবনযাপন করা (“living idly/undisciplined”). Not primarily a Critical doctrinal term, but connects practically to the Day-of-the-Lord teaching in ch.2 (some had stopped working, believing the Day had already come) — worth a cross-reference note for translators.
παράδοσις (3:6)
paradosis
”tradition”
—
tradition
Same term as 2:15 — Standing Firm in the Traditions doctrine reappears here in a practical, disciplinary applicationHigh. Reuse শিক্ষা (see 2:15 note) — must render identically to 2:15 for doctrinal continuity.
μιμέομαι (3:7, 3:9)
mimeomai
”to imitate”
Following a pattern/model
imitate, follow the example of
Paul’s working example as a pattern for the church to follow, especially regarding self-supporting laborLow. অনুকরণ করা (ônukôron kôra).
περιεργαζόμενοι (3:11)
periergazomenoi
”being busybodies”
Meddling in others’ affairs while avoiding one’s own responsibilities
busybodies
Specific disorderly conduct: idleness expressing itself as meddlingLow. অনর্থক বিষয়ে হস্তক্ষেপকারী (“meddling in unnecessary matters”).
νουθετεῖτε (3:15)
noutheteite
”admonish”
Warn/correct with a view to change, distinct from mere encouragement
admonish, warn
Corrective church discipline exercised with familial, not adversarial, intent (3:15’s “not as an enemy but as a brother”)Medium (new term, distinct from baseline’s “exhort”). Render সতর্क করা (sotorko kora, “to warn/admonish”) as distinct from the baseline’s উৎসাহিত করা (encourage) and বিনতি (entreaty) — νουθετέω carries a corrective edge neither of those baseline senses fully captures. Flag for native-speaker review given Bengali honor-shame social dynamics (3:14’s “that he may be ashamed,” ἐντρέπω) make church-discipline language pastorally sensitive; admonishment must be framed as familial correction (ὡς ἀδελφόν, “as a brother”), never as public shaming or communal exclusion in the way caste/communal ostracism operates in South Asian social contexts.
ἐντρέπω (3:14)
entrepō
”to be ashamed, put to shame”
To feel shame, to be turned inward in embarrassment
be ashamed, be put to shame
The corrective (not punitive) goal of withdrawing fellowship from a disobedient believerHigh (pastoral-cultural sensitivity). লজ্জিত হওয়া (lojjito howa, “be ashamed”) — flag for native-speaker review: shame/honor dynamics are unusually salient in Bengali social life (as already flagged in the baseline doctrine registry for other Romans passages); church discipline language must avoid resembling communal শাস্তি (social punishment/ostracism) patterns familiar from caste or communal-identity contexts.
κύριος τῆς εἰρήνης (3:16)
kyrios tēs eirēnēs
”the Lord of peace”
—
Lord of peace
Reuses established প্রভু and শান্তিHigh/Medium (baseline-established)
