Executive Summary

01 Executive Summary — 3 John — English → Bengali

Why it matters

3 John is the shortest book in the New Testament, but for Bengali translation it is disproportionately high-stakes: its five core doctrines — Hospitality to Traveling Ministers, Imitating Good rather than Evil, Church Leadership and Pride (Diotrephes), Commendation of Faithful Witness (Demetrius), and Truth and Christian Fellowship — run directly into some of the most culturally load-bearing vocabulary in Bengali religious life: satya (truth), prema (love), atithi (guest), and darshan (seeing/beholding the divine). Because the letter is personal and pastoral rather than propositional like Romans, its doctrine is carried almost entirely by word choice and tone rather than formal exposition — meaning term-level precision is not a technical detail here, it is the doctrinal safeguard.

Key findings

  • Full-book scope confirmed. 3 John 1:1–14 is the entire book; the core passage and the full-book-coverage mandate are one and the same. No chapter was silently skipped.
  • 41 terms are now recorded across the extended translation memory: 6 inherited exactly from the baseline Romans package (ঈশ্বর, মণ্ডলী, শান্তি, পরজাতি, যীশু, সহভাগিতা) and 35 newly introduced for this curriculum.
  • Term-level risk: 1 Critical term (ঈশ্বর, inherited) and 8 High-risk terms newly identified for this curriculum — সত্য (truth), প্রেম (love), অতিথি (stranger/guest), নাম (the Name, v.7), প্রাধান্য কামনা করা (love of preeminence), বহিষ্কার করা (cast out), দেখা (see/know God, v.11), and সত্য/true (v.12). Total Critical + High terms requiring mandatory human theologian review: 9.
  • Doctrine-level risk: of the 7 doctrines tracked (5 curriculum-named + 2 supporting doctrines surfaced in analysis), 5 are High risk requiring theologian review (Hospitality, Church Leadership and Pride, Truth and Christian Fellowship, Imitating Good rather than Evil, Chosen Christian Kinship) and 2 are Medium risk requiring native-speaker review (Commendation of Demetrius, Spiritual Well-Being). Zero Critical or Low-only doctrines. Total requiring theologian review: 5 doctrines; native speaker review: 2 doctrines.
  • No prior Bengali NT translation tradition fully anticipates this letter’s risks. The mainstream O.V./BCL lineage is broadly usable but tends to soften Diotrephes’s three-part indictment (v.10); Catholic Bengali editions introduce almsgiving-adjacent (দান/পুণ্য) hospitality vocabulary that collides with the baseline’s already-forbidden merit-language; Mussalmani-idiom and Jehovah’s Witnesses editions must not be echoed at all.

Risks

  • সত্য (truth) and প্রেম (love) are the two highest-severity risks in the entire letter: both are unavoidable, high-frequency, doctrinally central terms with zero viable lexical alternative in Bengali, and both collide with prestige categories from Bengal’s dominant Vaishnava-Vedantic devotional and philosophical tradition (Satya/Sat as the impersonal Absolute; prema-bhakti as romantic-devotional love). Unfenced use risks quietly converting Johannine Christ-centered truth/love into Bengali devotional-philosophical categories.
  • অতিথি (guest) and দেখা (see/know God) risk importing Atithi Devo Bhava guest-deification and darshan visual-devotion frameworks respectively, subtly relocating this letter’s hospitality and knowledge-of-God doctrines onto a different theological foundation than the text intends.
  • বহিষ্কার করা (cast out) and প্রাধান্য কামনা করা (love of preeminence) carry acute social-sensitivity risk given real communal/caste-based expulsion practices and Bengali honor/status (izzat) culture; mishandling either risks the passage being read as either endorsing shunning or excusing self-serving religious authority.
  • Softening risk in circulation: existing Bengali translation traditions (BCL) already show a documented tendency to blunt v.10’s indictment of Diotrephes and to isolate v.2’s health/prosperity greeting into a stand-alone promise — both patterns this curriculum must actively resist, not merely avoid introducing.

Opportunities

  • 3 John’s short length and personal register make it an efficient, high-leverage curriculum for reinforcing the Romans package’s grace-versus-merit and Christ-centered-truth fencing in a second, structurally different genre (personal letter vs. doctrinal epistle), strengthening cross-curriculum vocabulary consistency for learners.
  • The letter’s deliberate ভাই→বন্ধু (brother→friend) inclusio offers a strong, ready-made teaching opportunity to present gospel fellowship as a chosen, cross-caste, cross-communal family identity — directly relevant pastoral material for a readership split between Hindu-majority West Bengal and Muslim-majority Bangladesh.
  • Because 3 John introduces almost no new transliterated loanwords (unlike Romans’ Abba, etc.) and only three new proper names (Gaius, Diotrephes, Demetrius), the translation burden is concentrated in semantic fencing of existing vocabulary — a well-defined, trackable task rather than open-ended lexical invention.
  1. Lock the 9 Critical/High terms and 5 High-risk doctrines for mandatory theologian review before any Phase 2 segment is marked approved; do not allow automated or native-speaker-only sign-off on these.
  2. Require the translator-note fencing pattern specified in assets/translation_memory.json and analysis/12_ai_translation_requirements.md at every occurrence of সত্য, প্রেম, অতিথি, নাম (v.7), প্রাধান্য কামনা করা, বহিষ্কার করা, and দেখা (v.11) — no unfenced occurrence should reach final output.
  3. Preserve, rather than soften, v.10’s three-part indictment of Diotrephes and v.12’s personification of truth as an active witness — both are documented weak points in existing Bengali translation practice.
  4. Confirm the three new proper-name transliterations (গায়াস, দিয়ত্রিফি, দীমীত্রিয়) against a published Bengali NT edition before Phase 2 lock-in.
  5. Confirm the YouVersion version ID (bcl-bn placeholder) against the live API before citation links are finalized in any learner-facing material.

Consistent with assets/translation_memory.json, assets/bible_term_registry.json, assets/doctrine_risk_registry.json, and analysis/11_doctrine_analysis.md (all 2026-07-09). Any revision to term or doctrine counts must be applied to all documents in lockstep.
